Manchester United started the season in inconsistent fashion under Ruben Amorim. Due to results, disagreements over tactics and transfer decisions, United and Amorim parted ways in January. The Red Devils appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager, and he adapted to the job immediately, winning his first four matches in a row, including victories against Manchester City and Arsenal. Carrick guided United to a third-place finish and secured Champions League football for the next season. During this time, the club managed to beat most of the top teams in the league and won six of their final seven matches, ending the season very strongly indeed. As a result, Carrick was offered the job on a permanent basis in May, which he accepted. Omar Berrada In a wide-ranging interview with the club’s media, CEO Omar Berrada explained why Carrick was given the job ahead of potential rivals. Berrada claimed that Carrick and he have a “very good” relationship. He also explained, “I obviously didn’t know him prior to him taking over the role, so when we went through the interview process, I met him for the first time. I had heard many good things about him, and everything has turned out to be true. He’s somebody who loves the club, understands the values of the club, is a great man-manager, and we’ve seen that with the players and how they’ve reacted to him taking over.” Giving an insight into why Carrick was chosen to lead the club forward, Berrada suggested, “I think he’s earned the right to continue leading the team over the next two years or more.” When pushed to describe the Englishman’s managerial style, he said, “I would describe him as somebody who is very calm but also very driven and I’m sure he’ll do everything he can, him and his staff, to make sure that we have a successful team this season, next season and the year after that.” Berrada hinted that perhaps United have got it wrong in recent years by choosing managers with very different styles. He explained, “the way we look at it is you need the right coach for the squad that you have and what you’re trying to achieve over the next years. I think Michael, over the last months, has demonstrated that he can do that. I think when we look at the squad and what we’re trying to do over the next two years, he does bring the right attributes, the right ingredients, character, understanding of the club to help us navigate through the next steps of our journey.” MIchael Carrick Managerial Career Stats TeamFromToGames PlayedGames WonGames DrawnGames LostWin % Manchester United (caretaker)21 November 20212 December 2021321066.7 Middlesbrough24 October 20224 June 202513663244946.3 Manchester United13 January 2026present17123270.6 Total15677285149.4 Featured image Steve Bardens via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. “It’s a fantastic place to be at the minute”: Why forgotten United star chose to extend his Old Trafford stay

Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has secured his future at the club for one more season. New deal The 40-year-old keeper is Manchester United’s number three goalkeeper but plays an integral role as part of the club’s leadership group. Heaton started his career in the Manchester United academy before playing first-team football for Cardiff City, Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa. He rejoined Manchester United in 2021 and has played three senior matches for the side. It was reported yesterday that Heaton signed a new one-year deal at the club that will take him into his 41st year. Delight The veteran keeper explained to the club’s official site why he was so happy to sign a new deal and believes the club is heading towards good times again. He explained, “I think any time spent at this football club, as a player, is incredible. So to extend for another year, I’m absolutely delighted.” Heaton added, “I think the club’s in a really good place, we’ve had some really good results this season. We’re back in the Champions League, looking forward to moving forward, so it was a very easy decision.” The keeper has played an important role in supporting the goalkeeping unit, particularly in helping Senne Lammens settle as the new number one keeper. Evolving role He claimed that providing his experience and knowledge of the game is “an important part, especially as a senior player. But to be brutally honest, I think a lot of that comes from competing every day.” Heaton also spoke about his desire to see the club get back to the top. He asserted, “we all know what the requirements are at this football club, and that’s winning. And I think, for me, yes, helping players is part of it, developing players is part of it, but it’s all geared towards getting this football club to be in a successful place.” Whilst the Englishman knows his main job is to get the other keepers ready for action, he insists he is still ready to be called upon if needed as a player. He claimed, “as the role has evolved, as it’s moved on, I think you start to look at winning through people maybe a little bit more. You know, can you influence players? Can you offer something here and there, support, demand a little bit more? But that is secondary to making sure you’re ready to play and you’re ready to compete.” Support for Michael Carrick Michael Carrick, who was a teammate of Heaton during the keeper’s first spell at the club, took over the first team in January. Heaton only has positive words to say about the manager and claimed, “it’s been fantastic actually. You know, the gaffer, I played with him in my first stint at the club for a few years, so I know him very well, I have the utmost respect for him. An impressive, impressive player and obviously an impressive manager. He’s been fantastic to play for.” He claimed the results have backed up the manager’s credentials and said that the club is “a fantastic place to be at the minute” after Carrick and his staff had their contracts extended. United star’s heroic strike shoots down World Cup favourites in historic victory
Manchester United have had numerous players on international duty this week. They had one last night as Amad came off the bench for the Ivory Coast versus France. Irregular season Amad burst into life in the 2024/2025 season but struggled to have the same impact this year. He started the season as a wingback in Ruben Amorim’s system but moved to a winger in Michael Carrick’s formation. Amad started the season quite well, but his form noticeably dipped after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations. Ivory Coast The Ivorian did finish the season in better form and grabbed an assist versus Brighton & Hove Albion on the last day of the campaign. He was subsequently called up for his nation’s World Cup squad and started on the bench for Ivory Coast in their 2-1 friendly win over France. Amad played 45 minutes and grabbed a late goal to win the match for Les Éléphants. He swept the ball home from a first-time cross with his right foot to secure a late lead for the African side. It was his only shot on goal in the match, and he also completed one out of three dribble attempts. Amad did not complete any key passes or crosses in the match but did look after the ball, making 88% of his passes. The 23-year-old did help out defensively, though, winning four duels and recovering the ball the same number of times. It was his sixth goal for his nation, and Ivory Coast will next be in action against Ecuador in the World Cup on 14th June. They will also face Germany and Curaçao in their group. United academy midfield general who blew fans away in 2026 in line for first-team promotion – BBC
Manchester United have plans of revamping their midfield with as many as three new arrivals expected to offset the loss of a similar number of players Casemiro is on his way to Major League Soccer, while INEOS are keen to cut their losses regarding Manuel Ugarte. Academy sensation Toby Collyer could also depart, and the Red Devils are working hard to fill the gaps. United have already agreed a fee with Atalanta for Ederson, while the co-owners are working to secure the signings of either Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, or Elliot Anderson. Midfield revamp West Ham’s asking price and Real Madrid’s entry have complicated the chase for the Portuguese midfielder, while the Italian’s price and wage demands are currently proving prohibitive. The Nottingham Forest ace seems destined to land up at Manchester City despite United’s best efforts, which has meant INEOS have been forced to look at alternatives. Hayden Hackney is a name Michael Carrick is pushing to sign, while Aurelian Tchouameni is another dream target should Real Madrid change their stance. According to the BBC, if none of the top targets can be secured, there is a chance Carrick will promote from within. Carrick could promote from the academy Tyler Fletcher, who recently made the Scotland World Cup squad, is an obvious name to look out for, while Jacob Devaney has joined the list following his brilliant loan spell with St. Mirren. “If Ugarte leaves and Ederson comes in, United would be left without experience in the deeper midfield positions, with Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes usually used further forward. “That is why United could end up with two, possibly three, additions in that area of the pitch alone. “There is potential for reinforcement from the academy, in the form of Tyler Fletcher, who is part of Scotland’s World Cup squad, or Jacob Devaney, who excelled on loan at St Mirren in the second half of the season.” Jacob Devaney deserves a shot The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international impressed for United’s Under-21 side, which led the club to loan him out to the Scottish Premiership, not the easiest place for a youngster to thrive, just ask Amad. The 18-year-old started 14 times in all competitions for the Scottish side, registering a goal and an assist in the process. The defensive midfielder helped his loan club avoid relegation while also playing a stellar role as the Buddies reached the semi-finals of the Scottish FA Cup. Michael Carrick has been kept abreast of the midfield general’s performances and there is a good chance Jacob Devaney will make the cut for United’s pre-season squad. Should he impress, the sky’s the limit for the Barnsley-born athlete. “Deserves a lot of credit”: United CEO lavishes praise on United flop, fans will be puzzled
After an ill-fated 14-month spell in charge of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim was shown the door early in January this year. And for good reason. Under the Portuguese tactician, the Red Devils had won a mere 14 Premier League games out of 44, while several key performers struggled to perform in his strict system. Not only that, he oversaw one of the darkest days in the club’s recent history, as the team lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. A disappointing start to the 2025/26 season and an altercation with Jason Wilcox finally saw INEOS pull the plug, something they should have done much earlier. Ruben Amorim deserved to go In came Michael Carrick as caretaker head coach, and the fortunes of the 20-time English league champions changed overnight. So much so that United ended up finishing third, their highest in three years, while qualifying for the Champions League with three games to spare. United CEO Omar Berrada was asked about Ruben Amorim and whether the brains trust felt it was a call they got wrong. Speaking to club media, the CEO revealed that the former head coach helped in many ways, with Carrick benefiting from certain changes. Omar Berrada praises Ruben Amorim “I actually think that Ruben deserves a lot of credit for many things. He went through a very difficult season last year. “He was put under difficult circumstances, but he did help raise the standards in the dressing room.” “So, I think he deserves a lot of credit for that, and I do think that he’s going to be a successful coach, and I wish him all the best.” One thing Ruben Amorim did that has helped is removing disruptive influences from the dressing room like exiling Marcus Rashford until he left and discarding Alejandro Garnacho last summer. The Mancunian is struggling to find a permanent home while Chelsea remain keen to offload the Argentine, which vindicates the former Sporting CP boss’s decision. United ahead of Liverpool in race to sign 21-yo wizard after two years of intense scouting – report
Manchester City are expected to beat Manchester United to the signing of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. City have had their opening bid for Anderson rejected, but their pursuit of the England midfielder remains ongoing. United, meanwhile, are now focusing on signing Mateus Fernandes. A report suggests the Red Devils are the frontrunners in this race. Manchester United ahead of Liverpool According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), Liverpool have now joined Manchester United in the race for Mateus Fernandes, who appears ready to leave West Ham United following their relegation to the Championship. It is claimed that both northwest clubs have been closely monitoring Fernandes for around two years. The Portuguese newspaper, however, claims that United are slightly ahead of Liverpool at this stage. Michael Carrick reportedly wants to transform his side’s midfield and considers the 21-year-old as one of the players capable of helping reshape that area of the squad. It is understood that Liverpool remain attentive to the situation and could move if United fail to make progress. West Ham’s asking price for Mateus Fernandes The 5’10” midfield magician’s versatility, passing, vision, and tenacity make him one of the most well-rounded young midfielders on the continent. As such, the Hammers are keen to make the most of the hype surrounding the Portuguese playmaker. Still, if United fail to find an agreement with West Ham, the likes of Liverpool may try to swoop in. Video: Omar Berrada reveals juicy details of United’s summer transfer plans, fans will be excited for what’s in store

Manchester United have started off their summer business with a bang, agreeing a deal with Atalanta for their midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian is likely to be the first of several arrivals, with INEOS keen on strengthening all across the pitch. Unlike the Glazers, the new co-owners seem to be transparent when it comes to sharing the club’s transfer plans and CEO Omar Berrada sat down with the club’s media department to shed some light on what is in store. Interestingly, the former City chief executive revealed that like the last summer, the Red Devils are likely to target Premier League-proven performers along with a few stars who are doing well in Europe. What sort of players United will target revealed Ederson fits the second category, while the likes of Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Lewis Hall all belong to the first segment. Like the last window, the 20-time English league champions will not delve into panic buys, nor will they pay over the odds for short-term fixes. “I think the template for what we did last summer will be replicated. You always go into a window and you don’t know how you’re going to come out of it, but you have to be really prepared. “You have to have a clear plan, you have to know exactly what positions you’re looking to strengthen and you also have to be prepared for any eventuality. There could be exits we’re not expecting, there could be opportunities in the market that perhaps weren’t there at the beginning of the window. Plans in place but flexibility also needed “So, we have to be ready, we have to be agile and flexible. But we have a clear plan. Jason Wilcox and his team are very well set up to execute that plan. “I do think what we saw last season is a good way forward for us, which is we want a mix of experience and youth, we want a mix of players who have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also players who are doing very well outside the Premier League. “But we will always do it within our terms, ensuring that whatever decision we take is not just for the short term, but also for the long term.” Another interesting point Omar Berrada mentioned was not allowing agents and players to dictate the market. Change in approach under INEOS Under the Glazers, United were well known for paying over the odds, including agent fees, which later was termed as the United tax. That has been abolished under INEOS. The club CEO also praised the new-look transfer team’s approach, especially the use of data to pinpoint targets specific to their needs. “We have to be really disciplined, it’s simple. We have a plan, we know what we can invest and we have to stick to that. “In some cases, we may decide to make an investment knowing it’s the right thing for not just the next two or three years, but the next 10 years. But clearly, we need to stay very focused on what we’re trying to achieve. Omar Berrada highlights growing utilisation of data “It’s very important that you don’t let the market or the agents dictate what we should be doing. “When I look at the football leadership team, plus the investment we’ve made in Michael Sansoni [director of data]’s team on the data side, we’re in pretty good shape and I think the quality of the decisions will continue to improve as the team settles and we continue investing in those areas.” Hopefully, United can add two more midfielders, a striker along with new defensive recruits to hand Michael Carrick the best shot at success next term.
