Man Utd told to sell five players as Romano reveals Ten Hag signing is ‘ideal target’ for Juventus

Man Utd legend Nicky Butt has named five players he wants the Red Devils to sell in the January transfer window after their terrible start to the season.

It has been an awful first half of the campaign for Man Utd – who play their next match in the Premier League against Newcastle on Monday – with Ruben Amorim’s men currently 14th in the table ahead of tomorrow’s fixture.

Despite his new way of playing, Amorim is finding similar problems as previous Man Utd managers with the Red Devils struggling for consistency of performances and results.

Amorim has overseen four wins in ten matches in all competitions with Man Utd losing their last four games against Wolves, Bournemouth and Tottenham.

And it has become clear that the Red Devils need a major clearout of players with Butt suggesting five players on talkSPORT (via GiveMeSport) that they need to get rid of.

Answering quick-fire questions, Butt was asked whether he would sell or keep specific players in the Man Utd squad under Amorim without time to give much of a reason.

Injury-plagued Mason Mount was one of the players he selected, despite Amorim understood to be a big fan of the England international, while Butt also chose to allow Andre Onana to leave Old Trafford.

There was little surprise in Butt’s final three answers with the Man Utd legend selecting three players over 30 as the other three to depart, choosing Casemiro, Jonny Evans, and Christian Eriksen.

Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has not contributed enough in the eyes of many and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insists that the Netherlands international is an “ideal target” for Serie A giants Juventus.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “Many links are also in the press about Joshua Zirkzee. The truth is that Italian clubs, especially Juventus where his former coach Thiago Motta is in charge, are closely monitoring his situation at Man United.

“At the moment, United are not entertaining talks from any club for the Dutch striker, and that is an important point to underline. But should this stance change in the next weeks or especially in the summer, the interest from Italy is still there, and Juventus keep thinking of Zirkzee as an ideal target for their project.”

Man Utd defender Harry Maguire, who now looks likely to stay under Amorim, thinks the Red Devils now have a “solid base” to build on under the Portuguese head coach.

Maguire told the club’s official website: “It’s really good that we’re looking in a real strong position now.

“Defensively, I think, last year, obviously it was really tough, every game having to change players, players playing out of position, but we look like we’ve got a good solid base back now and lots of competition for places.”

Maguire added: “[It’s] really important at a club like this, everyone pushing each other, striving for more. At the end of the day, we all want to win.

“We all want to be successful. We want to win trophies. And yeah, I think it’s so important that now we’ve got lots of competition.”

Atletico Madrid are interested in Marcus Rashford but financial concerns may hinder their pursuit, as per reports.

Rashford has fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim, who has snubbed the Englishman from his recent matchday squads.

The 27-year-old, who scored the first goal of the Amorim era at United, hasn’t featured for the Red Devils since he was taken off early in the second half against Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

As things stand, it seems United are looking to get rid of their academy product. However, they are struggling to find a suitor, owing to financial difficulties.

After a prolific campaign under Erik ten Hag, Rashford signed a deal until 2028 with United and became one of the highest paid players in Europe, reportedly taking home more than £300,000 a week.

According to Fichajes, Atletico and Barcelona have explored the possibility of signing the England international.

However, his form as well as his lucrative contract at Old Trafford are “holding back any move.” As per Capology, he earns £ 19,500,000 per year, including bonuses.

On his day, Rashford, who scored 30 goals across all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign, is one of the most electric wingers in Europe, capable of making the headlines with his pace and incredible ball-striking ability.

The La Liga race is very tight this season, with only three points separating Atletico and third-placed Barca. A player like Rashford is capable of making the difference come the end of the season,

However, it is suggested that both Spanish giants aren’t in the best of financial situations to take a gamble on the United superstar.

The Spanish outlet adds that Saudi Arabia and Turkey are appearing as Rashford’s potential destinations. However, at this stage of his career, such moves might not be very appealing for him.

Meanwhile, Atletico have been linked with another United forward. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Madrid based club are targeting Alejandro Garnacho.

United “tested the waters” for two-time PL winner with player set to move to Serie A giants instead – report

Manchester United have been struggling big time on the pitch of late, losing five games in December including three on the trot.

Ruben Amorim has now managed to win a mere seven points from a possible 21, with former manager Erik ten Hag accruing more points from his final seven games in charge.

The Red Devils have conceded 10 goals in the last four games with Matthijs de Ligt’s absence due to illness not helping matters.

With Lisandro Martinez’s struggles and Leny Yoro’s inexperience, It is clear that a commanding centre-back could be a huge boon in the winter, especially keeping in mind the team’s weakness from set-pieces.

Danilo emerged as a surprise option

Juventus’ Danilo had emerged as a surprise option with the former Real Madrid and Manchester City star “wanted” by Amorim due to his experience.

The 33-year-old has won two Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies and with the Turin-based outfit open to a cut-price exit, the 20-time English league champions were thinking of pouncing.

However, as reported by Tuttosport, United had tested the waters for the Brazilian but Juventus are mulling over a swap deal and hence, the operation failed.

Napoli have offered the Brazil international a two-year deal and he has accepted with Antonio Conte keen on the versatile centre-back, who is capable of playing on both flanks.

“The reason why the Brazilian now appears inclined to accept the courtship of De Laurentiis’ club is because a contract until 2026 is ready.

        Danilo to Napoli

“With all due respect to the many foreign admirers Flamengo, Marseille and Manchester United, who in recent weeks have asked for information and tested the waters.

“Juve does not intend to give Danilo his registration, but aims to collect compensation or obtain something in exchange (for example the loan of Raspadori from Napoli). Danilo has chosen Napoli as the next stage of his career. Conte awaits him with open arms.”

It would have been a short-term deal, but United are better served looking for quality options elsewhere. United have not signed anyone below 27 since INEOS came onboard and there is no reason to change that stance for Danilo.

Amorim prefers intensity and the Juve star cannot provide that anymore. A left wingback and striker are of greater importance in January.

Man Utd insider reveals Rashford ‘issues’ with ‘every’ pre-Amorim manager; confirms forward’s ‘perspective’

          man-utd-insider-reveals-rashford-‘issues’-with-‘every’-pre-amorim-manager;-confirms-forward’s-‘perspective’
Man Utd insider reveals Rashford ‘issues’ with ‘every’ pre-Amorim manager; confirms forward’s ‘perspective’

Manchester United reporter Andy Mitten has revealed that England international Marcus Rashford had “issues” with “every” manager pre-Ruben Amorim.

Rashford is likely to leave Man Utd in January as he’s announced that he is “ready” for a new challenge.

The United forward’s form has dramatically declined since the 2022/23 campaign, in which he scored 30 goals in all competitions, and he’s rightly been heavily criticised for his poor performances.

It was hoped that the appointment of Amorim would breathe new life into Rashford, but his arrival has not had the desired effect as he’s not been involved since being omitted from Man Utd’s squad to face Man City on December 15.

Mitten – a journalist for The Athletic – thinks Amorim is a “smiling assassin” and he “had a big say” in the Rashford situation.

READ: Five unexpected Man Utd gut punches for Ruben Amorim in the longest month of his life

He also notes that “every previous manager had issues” with Rashford, who has a clear “perspective” of his own.

“I do think that the manager has had a big say here,” Mitten said on talkSPORT. “I think he is doing it his way and he’s a smiling assassin, he’s a disciplinarian.”

“And, every previous manager has had issues with Marcus Rashford. I’ve spoken to them, I know them, they’ve told me in confidence going back years and years and years.

“And then, Marcus confounds those opinions because he has a really good season and from his perspective, and he does have a perspective here, there’s not a lot of support for him, I’ve got to say, among Manchester United fans.”

“We played at Wolves a couple of days ago, thoroughly miserable there, but if I go back to Wolves at the start of February [last season], I was outside that away end, I couldn’t find a single Manchester United fan who wanted him to stay.

“When he scored after three or four minutes, those very same fans were singing Marcus Rashford’s name, so that is the environment that you’re in, and football fans are like that, they change their tune very quickly.

“But Marcus Rashford is not celebrated by United fans as he was, his stock is clearly very, very low. I don’t think he’s had a disastrous start to the season, he was worse last season, but clearly he’s nowhere near the levels that he would have hoped for.”

Mitten has also revealed an issue Rashford could face as he attempts to leave Man Utd.

“Now, if you’ve got Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona lining up going, ‘We’d love to take him’… But the reality, the economics of it, they just do not add up,” Mitten added.

“I don’t know what the outcome is going to be, he signed a huge contract, and a lot of them have signed huge contracts, and this makes fans uncomfortable.”

Man Utd: INEOS ‘substantially slash’ charity ‘funding’ in latest brutal Ratcliffe ‘cut’ after ‘act of cowardice’

INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe risks the wrath of Manchester United supporters again as he is reportedly going to ‘slash funding’ to its charitable arm.

Ratcliffe’s takeover was met with immense positivity at Man Utd, but the British billionaire has quickly become a hated figure at Old Trafford.

The INEOS supremo has sanctioned a cost-cutting programme as he’s looked to streamline his business. He’s been criticised for pushing through mass redundancies, hiking ticket prices, scrapping Christmas perks and taking away Sir Alex Ferguson’s global ambassador role.

Now, a report from Sky News reveals Ratcliffe and Co. are to ‘target the Manchester United Foundation’, with ‘trustees of its charitable arm to be notified that it will slash the funding it provides in the latest example of cost-cutting’.

READ: Five unexpected Man Utd gut punches for Ruben Amorim in the longest month of his life

The report claims ‘the Premier League club plans to inform the Manchester United Foundation that it intends to curb the benefits it provides – which totalled close to £1m last year – from 2025 onwards’. However, club chiefs are insistent that the cuts won’t be ‘significant’.

‘Sources close to the situation said a substantial element of the support given to the Foundation by the club would be axed, although Old Trafford insiders insisted on Sunday that it would still provide “significant” support to the charitable wing.

‘A decision is said to have been made by the club’s leadership to proceed with the cuts, with the Foundation expected to be informed about the scale of the reductions in the coming weeks.’

This story emerged after Man Utd supporter group, The 1958, hit out at Ratcliffe over his “act of cowardice” with recent cuts.

Their statement said: “A year of INEOS and Sir Jim promised so much after the generational damage caused by Glazer ownership.

“Sir Jim stated he wanted to put ‘The Manchester back into Manchester United’. Everyone thinking a local lad would understand the community, the working class and the fabric of our great club. Far from it and the disgraceful comments in the recent interview comparing United to Fulham back this up. Actions will always speak louder than words. All the evidence so far shows a different picture.

“Price hikes for match going fans. Removal of concessions for kids & pensioners. Club staff losing jobs at all levels saving peanuts. The [Dan] Ashworth debacle costing millions. Ticketing services impacted by cuts (away collections). Moral of the club and hopes of fans in the gutter. Stewards bonuses being removed & numbers cut.

“You’ve seen the queues right (more on this another time). Donations to the charity that supports ex-United players stopped without any notice. Nothing but total contempt for the fans and the very fabric of what our club was built on.

“Sir Jim’s strategy to cut costs is nothing other than an affront on the working-class foundations our club was built on. It’s a penny wise and pound-foolish approach. Hitting those most in need and can least afford it who have no voice is an act of cowardice and shows a total lack of understanding.”

READ: Bruno Fernandes ‘gaslights’ Man Utd to the point where Saka and Salah would fail under Amorim

“An investor with strength of conviction would address the real issues impacting the club. The Glazers. Their mismanagement of the club for over 20 years. Their crippling debt placed on the club and the millions of pounds paid by the club in interest payments each year.

“The strategy in place to recover from the Glazers s***show is targeting the vulnerable factions of our fan base. We now have the worse of both worlds. An attack from the top down with the Glazers creaming off the club and an attack from the bottom up with the ‘local Failsworth lad’ preying on those who can least afford it and have no voice.

“This cannot continue! We will not allow this to continue! If we do nothing as a fan base. Then there will be no more rivalries, no more fan culture.

“Only tourists and corporates happy for a day out with no emotional attachment. We are up for the fight. Is the Supporters Trust (how long are you going to stand by and do nothing)? Is the fanbase? In times of adversity and hardship we all need to look to each other for the light.

“It’s your choice. It’s now or never. No matter who you are underestimate the fans and Mancunians at your peril.”

Video: 1 error leading to goal, 16 possessions lost: United loanee suffers poor end to year in disappointing loss

Manchester United’s Sonny Aljofree had a disappointing Sunday as United’s loanees provided a mixed bag of performances.

Aljofree returned to action with Accrington Stanley after his side’s Boxing Day match was postponed due to bad fog.

The Owd Reds lost 2-1 away to Carlisle United, a poor result which sees the visitors sit only one point above last place in League Two.

Aljofree played the entire 90 minutes of action but only received a 6.1 rating from Sofascore in what was one of his weaker displays as of late.

He contributed defensively with four clearances and also made one blocked shot but was poor for both of Carlisle’s strikes.

The 20 year old lost his man on the wing and Jon James Alexander Mellish raced past the United man before picking out Kadeem Harris to fire home after just 11 minutes.

Disaster struck in the second half when Aljofree played a poor back pass under little pressure which resulted in a mix up between his keeper and the Carlisle forward.

Unluckily for the United youngster the ball broke to Luke Armstrong, who slotted into an empty net.

He was also careless with the ball, losing it 16 times and only completing 74% of his passes.

The Accrington defender did win five out of his 10 aerial battles but could only win one out of his three ground duels.

Wigan Athletic’s Joe Hugill had a much more positive afternoon from an individual perspective as he scored a late goal to equalise for his side, before Wrexham found a late winner.

The United striker came off the bench to fire home his fifth goal of the season for the Latics. He only had 17 minutes of action but his late contribution will surely give his boss, Shaun Maloney, something to think about before the next match.

Rhys Bennett also came off the bench for Fleetwood Town to help his team secure a 1-1 draw with Harrogate Town.

In 24 minutes of action, he made five clearances and won four out of six aerial battles.

James Nolan was in action yesterday for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and played 85 minutes from right back in a disheartening 1-4 home defeat against Cove Rangers.

Sir Jim set to implement another “depressing example” of callous cost-cutting at Old Trafford – report

Manchester United are set to cut funding to their charitable arm, the Manchester United Foundation.

The Foundation “uses football to engage and inspire young people to build a better life for themselves and unite the communities in which they live” and has been operating since 2007.

With United struggling to cope with PSR restrictions and in huge transfer debt, Ineos have implemented a range of controversial cost-cutting measures.

These include hiking up the price of match day tickets, laying off 250 members of staff, cutting funding to the Association of Former Manchester United Players and a disabled fans’ group.

What’s more, Ineos have seemingly gone after former members of staff by scrapping Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassador role and cutting David Gill’s salary from the club.

The latest victim is the Foundation as Sky News report that, “Manchester United Football Club is to cut the funding it provides to its charitable arm as part of a purge of costs being overseen by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, its newest billionaire shareholder.”

From 2025 the organization can expect to lose the benefits it received last year, which are believed to be close £1 million.

A source close to the club claimed that “all areas of club expenditure are being reviewed due to ongoing losses” but that there will still be “significant support” for the Foundation.

In response to the proposed cuts, a spokesman for the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) said, “The prospect of cuts to the charitable Foundation are another depressing example of the wrong priorities at United, cutting back on support to the community it purports to serve.”

The spokesperson also commented that the “negative atmosphere” being fostered through all of these cuts is “feeding” its way onto the pitch, as the club sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are certainly playing a dangerous game as they were welcomed with open arms by most a year ago but have become deeply unpopular lately.

Whilst fans understand the terrible economic situation the Glazers have left the club in, Ineos will receive little sympathy by cruelly going after charities and staff members while overpaying a horde of underperforming footballers.

Man Utd: Shearer picks ‘priority January transfer’ Amorim ‘needs’ with U-turn mooted, Newcastle pair named

Pundit Alan Shearer has picked out Manchester United’s ‘January transfer window’ and has named one player they could “spend a load of money” on.

January could be a busy month for Man Utd as new head coach Ruben Amorim is presumably keen to put his stamp on the squad.

Amorim has had a rough month since replacing Erik ten Hag as he’s lost five of his ten matches in charge across all competitions.

The Red Devils are miles away from being in a position to challenge for the Premier League as they are just eight points clear of the relegation zone.

A big overhaul is required at Man Utd as upgrades are required in various positions. A report claims Amorim has already picked his ‘priority’ signing.

Despite this, Shearer reckons their ‘January transfer priority’ should be to sign a “top striker” and they could change their approach regarding 2024 top scorer in Europe Viktor Gyokeres.

“Where do you start?” Shearer said in an interview with The Mirror. “Without doubt, United need a top striker, I’ve made my feelings clear on that for a long time now.”

READ: Five unexpected Man Utd gut punches for Ruben Amorim in the longest month of his life

“They could go out and spend a load of money on Viktor Gyokeres, Amorim obviously knows him really well.

“He said that he wouldn’t go back to Sporting to take them out, but that may change. Ultimately, they need players all over the park, one of the important ones is the position I played in and for me they need a top-class striker.”

“United fans might be looking at Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak when they play at Old Trafford, and they’re going to want top quality players, but I wouldn’t say specifically those players, I wouldn’t have thought that Newcastle will be up for selling any of their top players this January.

“United have got talented youngsters there, but when you have that you also need a sprinkling of top quality, experienced players in and around them. Clearly, there aren’t enough of those at Old Trafford at this moment in time.

“There’s work to be done in every department at the club, hence where they are in the league and where they are a club at this moment in time.”

Shearer has also explained why he thinks Amorim will be “really surprised” with what he’s seen from Man Utd since taking over.

“Amorim has got to be given time and the finance, which he obviously needs,” Shearer added. “United may win an FA Cup or something else, but this season has to be given to him as time to suss out who he wants and who he doesn’t want.

“He’s probably already got a good idea of that, because of what he’s trying to do already. We’ve seen that he’s tried different personnel already. I know managers sometimes say things to protect themselves.

“But I think when he’s said ‘it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better and the club are probably going to have to suffer,’ what he means by that are results like the one against Wolves where they suffered.

“He has to be able to find out – and be given the time to ship out – who he wants to, and he’s going to have to do a few, there’s no doubt. I’d guess he’s really surprised at how poor they are, with the money they’ve spent.”

Video: United star takes sly dig on the recruitment done under Ten Hag, claims Amorim has “total opposite” style of play

Manchester United lost their fifth game of this December last Thursday as they succumbed to a disappointing 0-2 defeat at the hands of relegation contenders Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This was United’s third straight defeat and under Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils have managed to secure only seven points from a possible 21, which is less than what former manager Erik ten Hag accrued in his final seven games in charge.

What the Molineux result once again showed was how the current squad looks ill-equipped to deal with the Portuguese’s demands of playing in a 3-4-3 system.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss wants wingbacks, with the club currently operating with defensive-minded full-backs and no out-and-out left-back.

Squad not suited to Amorim’s demands

Up front, Amorim’s system demands two No 10s alongside an elite finisher while the squad has an abundance of inconsistent wingers and a couple of toothless strikers.

Most of these players were recruited by Ten Hag, who wanted a counter-attacking team capable of fast transitions while Amorim prefers a possession-based approach, two diametrically opposite styles.

And Harry Maguire, who has enjoyed a fine run of form in a back three, also supported this notion and mentioned how the squad is struggling to cope as a result.

The former skipper also reiterated Amorim’s line of there being more suffering in store before things eventually get better and also claimed that the Portuguese was indeed the right man for the job.

“The thing is with the managers and the styles, it is not like they have come in and they have similar styles,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “They are the total opposite in terms of what they want and what they demand.

                    EtH-Amorim styles are polar opposites

“So the transition period is going to be tough. We all have great belief in the manager and all his coaching staff. I am sure things are going to turn around. He knows exactly what he needs to do to get this club back. Amorim has come in and done everything he needs to do. He is really demanding.”

United’s next three fixtures could not get any harder with Newcastle United up next followed by a trip to Anfield to face arch-rivals and league leaders Liverpool before another trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal in the FA Cup.

As a result of the team languishing in 14th position, the centre-back said that the squad is not setting any targets and just looking to improve.

He also claimed that Amorim and all the players were very disappointed with the recent results, something they believe fans do not deserve.

“He is a winner, so I am sure he will be because he hates losing games. It is frustrating. We want to win football matches and make our fans happy because so far this season it has not been good enough.

No targets set by the team

“We are just doing everything we can to climb the table. We can’t really set a target at the moment because we are nowhere near good enough and nowhere near where we want to be in the league table.

“It is really disappointing what we have done until now. Everybody knows that. We know it is not good enough for this club.”

Maguire could be in line to start the game against the Magpies as skipper with Bruno Fernandes suspended for the tie. The head coach has been full of praise for the England international and has even asked INEOS to offer him a new contract extension.

As far as the coach is concerned, there is a feeling that owing to the nature of the squad, Amorim needs to tweak his style to a certain extent to avoid a relegation scrap.

If he carries on in the same vein, as he has promised, not a lot of wins look likely unless INEOS support him in January, which is also highly unlikely.

It feels like Manchester United are going through one of their worst phases in recent memory, both on and off the pitch.

INEOS are on a cost-cutting spree in every major department, leaving fans and ex-players feeling disgruntled with the way their club is being operated.

And the first team continues to lose games, with the defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday their fifth in December.

But despite all the turmoil, the media seems to be obsessed with Marcus Rashford’s future ever since the Mancunian came out and publicly declared his intention to leave his boyhood club.

Rashford’s future up in the air

Ruben Amorim has dropped him from three matchday squads in a row and the Red Devils are finally resigned to losing him with a January loan exit on the cards as they look to increase his market value.

Journalist Andy Mitten has now claimed that Amorim is taking the right decision with the United academy graduate as the forward has been a problem for multiple managers in the past.

INEOS, despite their off-field controversies, are finally backing the coach instead of the player in a bid to end the culture of rampant player power at the club.

“I do think the manager has had a BIG say here. I think he’s doing it his way. He’s is a smiling assassin. He’s a disciplinarian,” he said on talkSPORT.

“Every previous manager has had issues with Marcus Rashford. I’ve spoken to them, I know them. They’ve told me in confidence going back years and years and years.”

Rashford’s career graph perfectly encapsulates this point. He has usually performed well for a manager in their first season before regressing back to showing his awful attitude on the pitch.

He has let multiple managers down

The 27-year-old was on fire for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he first arrived but in his final season, the Englishman was a shadow of his former self.

Erik ten Hag faced a similar issue with Rashford his talisman in his debut season but since then, he became anonymous on the pitch.

Rashford has usually not responded well to criticism from the manager nor with a change in position on the pitch or when asked to help out with the defence.

It will be intriguing to see whether he does leave in January with United’s other forwards struggling for form and with the club looking likely to get dragged into a relegation scrap.
