Amorim “is pushing” United to retain “reliable” defender with contract quickly running out – report

Ruben Amorim appears to have identified Harry Maguire as being an essential part of his future plans for Manchester United.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, market rumours have been growing, with several Man United stalwarts punted to leave the club.

Christian Eriksen and Antony have emerged as potential candidates to depart the club, at least on a loan basis, with neither securing regular playing time.

Expectations for Marcus Rashford to leave United have also been mounting, given his fourth consecutive exclusion from Amorim’s matchday squad. One player who some might not expect to be on this list is Harry Maguire, given his growing role in the United lineup.

With Maguire’s contract set to lapse at the end of the season, clubs from the Premier League and abroad have signalled their interest in the English centre-back. Napoli, Leicester City, Fenerbahce, and Galatasaray have all been linked with Maguire should he be made available in the summer.

However, it appears that United manager Ruben Amorim is bent on retaining Maguire’s services, putting a stop to any transfer talks before they even begin.

“Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is putting pressure on the Old Trafford hierarchy to ‘sign up’ Harry Maguire by a further 12 months as he is desperate to ensure the centre-back’s head is not turned during the winter transfer window,” GIVEMESPORT reported.

“Amorim is pushing for Manchester United’s key decision-makers to take advantage of the opportunity to extend Maguire’s contract until the summer of 2026, having pinpointed him as one of the more reliable members of the dressing room since heading into the dugout,” the report continued.

Previously, The Peoples Person noted efforts to keep Maguire at Old Trafford, with reports claiming that United are likely to trigger his contract extension, thereby corroborating this latest update.

Maguire himself claimed that contract talks have been positive and appear to be heading towards an agreement.

Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation has increased United’s reliance on centre-backs, with three being used as opposed to two as was previously the case. As a result, the Portuguese manager will need to make use of every suitable player at his disposal.

Given Leny Yoro’s prior injury that ruled him out for months, Maguire was heavily relied upon during his absence, as well as the minor injury setbacks suffered by Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire has made 11 Premier League appearances so far this season, helping to keep four of United’s six clean sheets. While heavily rotated during the Ten Hag era, Maguire has been favoured by Amorim, who has played him in every one of the league games he has managed except for the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town when the defender was injured. (Transfermarkt)

Clearly, it is in the club’s best interest to keep Maguire, at least until a transfer overhaul can take place whereby Amorim is given the liberty to build a squad that best suits his needs.

Man Utd transfer: INEOS pick PL star as ‘favourite’ replacement for ‘unhappy’ star Amorim ‘wants out now’

According to reports, Manchester United have chosen their preferred replacement for Andre Onana amid claims Ruben Amorim ‘wants’ the goalkeeper ‘out now’.

The Red Devils paid around £47m to sign Onana from Serie A giants Inter Milan during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Recruited as David De Gea’s long-term replacement, Onana endured a turbulent start at Old Trafford as he particularly struggled in the Champions League, but he grew into his debut season and was one of United’s better players last season.

However, Onana has been heavily criticised for his recent weeks and it’s been suggested that he could be replaced in 2025.

Earlier this month, a report claimed Amorim has already ‘lost patience’ with Onana and ‘wants him out now’ after ‘asking for a top replacement in January’.

Man Utd are linked with several potential replacements and Brighton standout Bart Verbruggen is the latest player reportedly on their radar.

The Netherlands international joined Brighton from Belgian outfit Anderlecht last year and has replaced Jason Steele as their No.1.

22-year-old Verbruggen has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in the Premier League and he was the Netherlands’ first-choice goalkeeper at Euro 2024.

His form for Brighton has seemingly not gone unnoticed as he is ‘on Man Utd’s radar’, according to a report from The Daily Star.

Verbruggen is said to be Man Utd’s ‘favourite’ potential replacement for Onana, who is ‘increasingly unsettled’ and ‘unhappy’ at the Premier League giants.

‘Current Reds number one Andre Onana is increasingly unsettled after a number of poor displays, including in the 2-0 Boxing Day defeat at Wolves.

‘Even before previous boss Erik ten Hag, who signed him from Inter Milan, was sacked, the Cameroon star, 28, was unhappy with life in Manchester. But that situation appears to have worsened following the arrival of Ten Hag’s Portuguese successor Rubin Amorim.

‘The United hierarchy are fully aware of the issue surrounding £47.5million Onana – hence the hunt for a top keeper is already underway. And at present Dutch international Verbruggen, 22, seems to be the favourite on the Old Trafford stopper shopping-list.

‘With more than three years left on his contract on the South Coast, the Seagulls man, a £16.3m buy from Anderlecht in June 2023, would cost around the £30m mark.

‘Any deal is unlikely to happen before next summer, though, meaning United and Onana are stuck together for now.’

Before this report surfaced, former Red Devils misfit Massimo Taibi encouraged Onana to ‘move on’.

He said: “I’d be straight to the point and tell him, ‘Andre, you are one of the best keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under- performing.

“‘Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don’t change by June, move on’.

“I think subconsciously the United environment isn’t ideal for him and when a marriage is showing cracks, it’s pointless to continue.”

3-4-3: with two key players suspended, this experienced XI will steady the ship for Amorim vs Newcastle

Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are both suspended for Manchester United’s last match of 2024 against Newcastle United tomorrow.

They join the injured Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount on the list of absentees.

Marcus Rashford has been left out of the last four squads amidst rumours that he may leave the club in the January window, so he, too could be unavailable.

With the heavy fixture schedule, head coach Ruben Amorim would probably have liked to rotate his squad but he is left with few options this time around.

Andre Onana will be in goal and will be hoping to return to his excellent early season form after a couple of error-strewn weeks.

Matthijs de Ligt is expected to return in defence. He will probably be accompanied by Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, with Leny Yoro dropping back to the bench. Jonny Evans is another option.

The options for the holding midfield positions are Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer. The latter is probably not match-fit enough to start the game and Mainoo could be rested, so we predict the familiar and experienced Brazil-Denmark pivot will be selected.

Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot will probably continue in the wing back roles. Tyrell Malacia is another option but Amorim’s attempts to get him up to speed after a long layoff have so far proven unsuccessful and we think it unlikely he will be risked again.

Amorim has been very sparing in his use of Alejandro Garnacho of late but will all the other absentees, it surely must be time for him to be recalled. He would come in at left inside forward, with Amad on the right.

Antony is another option, especially if the boss thinks Amad needs a break. He did look a little jaded against Wolves on Boxing Day.

Up top, it’s back to the straight choice between Rasmus Hojlund and Josh Zirkzee. Both are struggling to impress, but we think just based on rotation, it will be the Dutchman that gets the nod tomorrow.

There could be a place up for grabs on the bench for a youngster, with places for Altay Bayindir, Yoro, Malacia, Evans, Mainoo, Collyer, Antony and Hojlund leaving one more spot to be filled.

Here, then, is our predicted line-up for tomorrow’s 8pm GMT kick-off:

United target with “magical left foot” could be swept away by Beckham’s Inter Miami – report

Manchester United target Kevin Zenon is of interest to David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

The Red Devils are trying to follow a different path when it comes to transfers and are targeting younger, less-well known players in comparison to the Glazer era.

Ineos have so far prioritised signing young stars who have potential to grow at the club, like Leny Yoro and Chido Obi.

One of the numerous areas United need to strengthen in is their attack and one player they are reportedly interested in is CA Boca Juniors’ Kevin Zenon.

United have been linked to the player alongside Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Planeta BJ, United may face even further competition to land the 23 year old.

“In Miami there is talk that they could come for Kevin Zenón for the next season.”

His future is up in the air as “the coaching staff does not know the situation and are waiting because in the middle of the year he asked for a contract improvement and to stay six more months.”

Zenon reportedly has a release clause of €15 million and Hoffenheim already sent an offer of €18 million but this was rejected by the player.

Since, he has become “a key piece and was irremovable from the starting eleven” at Boca.

Zenon has been described as having a “magical left foot” and can play as an attacking midfielder or winger.

The Argentine was part of the Olympic squad in the summer and has scored six goals and provided seven assists in this campaign.

United cult hero who is “best manager in the league” eyed by two Championship powerhouses – report

            Mark Robins of Coventry City

Former Manchester United striker Mark Robins is being eyed by West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City after being sacked by Coventry City last month.

The 55 year old started his youth career at Old Trafford and made 48 appearances for the club between 1988-1992.

Robins’ biggest contribution to the team was a winning goal in the 1990 FA Cup third round when United beat Nottingham Forest 1-0. It has gone down in United folklore that this goal saved Sir Alex Ferguson’s job at the club, as he was under immense pressure having not won a trophy in his first four years as coach.

Robins has since had a successful managerial career and was Coventry City boss from 2017 until last month.

The English coach took Coventry to the playoff final last season and they were on the brink of the FA Cup final but United squeezed past their former player on penalties after a chaotic 3-3 draw.

TBR football report that Robins may not need to wait too long to get back into the managerial game, however.

“TBR Football can exclusively confirm that Championship duo Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion are both keen on appointing a Manchester United cult hero as their new manager.”

Stoke fired Narcis Pelach after just three months in charge and Albion lost Carlos Corberan as he decided to join Valencia earlier this month.

As for Robins, “he was on Southampton and Leicester’s shortlists to be their new manager, but now he could soon be back in work.”

Both Stoke and West Brom would present very different challenges as Stoke are flirting with relegation and West Brom are pushing for promotion, sitting just outside the playoff places.

Robins was the longest serving manager in the Championship before his dismissal and is highly rated at this level.

The former striker was described as “the best manager in this league” according to the Luton Town coach Rob Edwards.

Man Utd ‘offer’ revealed as Amorim eyes ‘priority’ signing from PL club; Romano confirms star ‘will leave’

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim is determined to bring Wolves forward Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with Amorim’s side currently 14th in the table after losing 2-0 to Wolves on Boxing Day.

Man Utd have only won six of their 18 Premier League matches this campaign and sit a huge 20 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.

The January transfer window opens in a couple of days as Amorim hopes that Man Utd board can provide him with reinforcements to help his floundering team.

One player who impressed against the Red Devils on Boxing Day was Wolves attacker Cunha and now reports in Spain claim that Amorim wants to ‘turn [the] Premier League on its head’ with the ‘surprise signing’ of the Brazilian.

Man Utd are ‘preparing a strategic move in the winter transfer market’ for the Premier League star with Amorim making the former Atletico Madrid man his ‘top target’ for January.

Amorim sees Cunha ‘as the key piece to reinforce’ his side with the Man Utd boss now ‘looking for players who not only provide goals, but also dynamism, versatility and tactical adaptability’.

Man Utd are ‘willing to lead the race to get his services’ and their ‘offer could be around a considerable figure, possibly close to 60-70 million euros’.

Cunha is ‘an absolute priority for the winter transfer market’ for Amorim and the Man Utd boss sees the Brazilian ‘as a central piece of the long-term project at Old Trafford’.

There are a number of players who could depart in the January transfer window and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insists Christian Eriksen is one player who will definitely leave soon.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “The situation is quite similar also for Christian Eriksen. Manchester United have already decided internally that his contract will not be extended and that the Danish midfielder will leave on a free transfer in the summer – only a good proposal could change the story and see him leave in January.

“Real Betis were keen on signing Eriksen at the end of the summer window, but they were not able to agree on terms on both club and player side. In case a good club appears with a good proposal for the player, United could be open to facilitating his exit and move on from a signing strongly wanted by previous manager Erik ten Hag. However, Amorim’s vision goes in a different direction, as he wants intensity everywhere, especially in the midfield.

“Despite links with a potential exit, Man United are not looking at solutions for Lisandro Martinez or Andre Onana – at least for January – and the situation is completely under control with both players and there are no discussions ongoing with any club for this duo.

“Ruben Amorim also remains determined to help Antony to improve and be an important part of his squad for 2025; in this case, a good proposal could open the doors to a January exit for the Brazilian winger but Man United have not received any concrete approach.

“Many links are also in the press about Joshua Zirkzee. The truth is that Italian clubs, especially Juventus where his former coach Thiago Motta is in charge, are closely monitoring his situation at Man United.

“At the moment, United are not entertaining talks from any club for the Dutch striker, and that is an important point to underline. But should this stance change in the next weeks or especially in the summer, the interest from Italy is still there, and Juventus keep thinking of Zirkzee as an ideal target for their project.”

“Pointless to continue”: Ex-United man advises star not “cut out” for English football to leave Old Trafford

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi has told Andre Onana to move on in the summer as it is not working out at Old Trafford.

Taibi was brought to the club in 1999 but only played four games before leaving for Reggina after just one season.

The Italian was judged as a massive flop and conceded one of the softest goals Old Trafford has ever seen as he let a tame Matt Le Tissier shot slip through his grasp and bobble gently into the net.

Whilst Onana has performed much better than the Italian and played 76 times for the club in a season and a half, cracks are once again beginning to appear for the Cameroonian.

After a strong start to the season, he has had a poor December where he made clear individual errors against Nottingham Forest and Viktoria Plzen before being beaten directly from a corner against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day.

The Sun carry comments from Taibi stating that he believes Onana should leave United at the end of the season.

Discussing what advice he would give the former Inter Milan keeper he stated, “I’d be straight to the point and tell him, ‘Andre, you are one of the best keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under-performing’.”

“Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don’t change by June, move on’.”

He claimed that the United environment is “not ideal” for Onana and “when a marriage is showing cracks, it’s pointless to continue.”

Taibi claimed that he is not “cut out” for English football and that his skills would prosper elsewhere.

The Italian believes that Onana would be better equipped to play in French or Italian football and claimed it would not be a failure if he recognised this and swiftly left Old Trafford.

Taibi was quick to still back the keeper’s ability and claimed that whilst he is not suited to English football, he still remains “one of the best in Europe.”

Amorim will not give youth a chance this season, warn two United legends

Manchester United reportedly may not be in a position to provide many academy debuts this campaign.

The Red Devils pride themselves on using their famed academy and last season Ethan Wheatley became the 250th academy graduate to play a first team game.

Toby Collyer has already made his senior debut this season but there are chances that not many, if any, will join him in this campaign.

One of the reasons new head coach Ruben Amorim was hired was due to his commitment to trusting young players as his squad at Sporting Lisbon was stacked with young talent he put faith in like 17 year old Geovany Quenda, who has been linked to United.

United have signed numerous talented youngsters lately such as Chido Obi, Sekou Kone and most recently Diego Leon, who will arrive in the summer.

What’s more, the under 18s are flying having won every league game they have played this season with talents such as Godwill Kukonki, Jack Fletcher and Gabriele Biancheri.

However, former player Lee Sharpe (via the Manchester Evening News) claims that it will be tough for Amorim to introduce much young talent this season.

“I know they’ve got a couple of forwards who everyone’s raving about and a couple of other players that are just on the fringes of the first team,” he said.

“It’s always important at United. It’s important to have a manager who encourages the youth set-up to come through and give young players a chance. But I’m not sure.”

Sharpe believes that due to Amorim wanting to imprint his new tactics and 3-4-3 formation on the squad, he will likely continue to pick experienced benches.

Fellow former player Dimitar Berbatov also echoed Sharpe’s concerns and stated, “in his first season with the in-depth squad he’s got, looking at the bench, there won’t be too many new faces coming through this season unless, of course, they fit into the system that he wants to play.”

The Bulgarian believes that the fact United have never played his system in the first team or the youth teams means that there won’t be many ready-made academy players set to step up to help the first team squad right now.

“I think the whole group of players – from the Under-16s and Under-18s upwards – all may have to look at changing the way they approach games.”

Man Utd starter told to ‘move on’ by ex-Red Devil amid rumours Amorim ‘wants him out now’

Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana has been told to “move on” in the summer if he doesn’t improve by former Red Devils misfit Massimo Taibi.

The Red Devils have been in terrible form this season with Ruben Amorim’s side dropping to 14th in the Premier League table after losing 2-0 to Wolves on Boxing Day.

Onana had started the season well for Man Utd but the Cameroonian stopper has made a number of high-profile errors over the last month or two.

His latest gaffe came on Boxing Day against Wolves when the 28-year-old was beaten direct from a corner by Matheus Cunha with reports that Amorim ‘wants him out now’.

And that has led to former Man Utd goalkeeper Taibi insisting that Onana would be better off attempting to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

Taibi told The Sun: “I’d be straight to the point and tell him, ‘Andre, you are one of the best keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under- performing.

“‘Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don’t change by June, move on’.

“I think subconsciously the United environment isn’t ideal for him and when a marriage is showing cracks, it’s pointless to continue.

“Sometimes things don’t work out at a team and it’s best to go separate ways, which would not be a failure.

“For me he’s a strong goalkeeper who finds himself in a situation where he can’t show his skills because he is not cut out for the English game.

“He’s only suited to the Prem when it comes to his ball-playing ability and structure.”

Onana has been praised for saving Man Utd on a number of occasions but his big errors have overshadowed his good performances at times.

And Taibi reckons Onana is better suited to a different league away from the Premier League as the English top flight demands a “more imposing” style of goalkeeper.

Taibi added: “Andre’s a better fit for an Italian or French team.

“For English football you need a goalkeeper who is more imposing, regularly comes off his line using his fists and with a different saving technique.

“In his place I’d not have left Inter, where he was a big-shot. He made a calculated risk thinking he would slot in seamlessly at Manchester United but it backfired.

“But even though he hasn’t lived up to expectations he remains a top keeper, one of the best in Europe.”

Van Dijk tops grim list of all 17 £70m-plus Premier League signings, including five Man Utd disasters

Is there a curse on Premier League transfers above £70million? Arsenal’s record signing Declan Rice has done his bit to buck the trend and Moises Caicedo has finally come good for Chelsea, but this list remains grim.

Including an alarming number of flops, we have ranked the 17 players who cost a Premier League club £70m or more.

                      17) Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea
Chelsea bought Romelu Lukaku for the second time in 2021, splashing out £97.5m on the Belgian, who was given another chance to make a name for himself at Stamford Bridge. He had spent time on loan at Everton and West Brom during his first spell, playing the best football of his Premier League career for the former.

After a permanent and successful move to the Toffees, Lukaku joined Manchester United for big money (more on that soon) before a move to Inter and then Chelsea for the second time. Many expected Lukaku to be the signing of the season, F365 included, but he flopped disastrously having dug his own grave by publicly begging Inter to re-sign him.

The ill-advised interview with Sky Italia ensured the former Red Devils striker’s career in west London was as good as done. He did, at least, earn a loan move back to Inter for the 2022/23 campaign. He spent last season at AS Roma and the Blues finally cut ties with him in the summer when he signed for Napoli.

                      16) Antony to Manchester United
Antony might have age on his side but we cannot see how he becomes a success at Old Trafford. He cost a ridiculous £80m during Erik ten Hag’s first summer at the club, with United paying his former employers Ajax way above his value having left it so late in the 2022 summer transfer window.

United ended up spending more than they ever have before in a single window when Ten Hag arrived, most notably signing Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony.

Antony came to the Premier League known for his silky skills and wand of a left foot and a goal on his debut against Arsenal was the perfect start, but it was only downhill from there. He now has more yellow cards (14) than goals (12) or assists (5) for United in 93 appearances and even without the conclusive evidence of the statistics, the Brazilian has been extremely poor and looked nothing like a £70m+ winger.

Having signed for £80m, Antony is now worth £16.6m on Transfermarkt and United would be lucky to get that much for him. What a bloody disaster.

                      15) Jadon Sancho to Manchester United
Manchester United have had some absolute howlers in the transfer market over the years and the signing of Jadon Sancho is one of the worst. The Red Devils chased the England winger for well over a year while he was at Borussia Dortmund before eventually landing him for around £73m in the summer of 2021.

Fast forward three-and-a-half years and Sancho is finished at Old Trafford. He is now on loan at Chelsea after a very productive six months at ex-club Dortmund and United stand to make around £25m from his triggered sale at the end of the season. It is only because he will probably be sold for more and cost less than Antony that he is ranked higher than the Brazilian.

Perhaps the most costly example of ‘Bundesliga tax’, Sancho was never able to find his game for United and he lost every hope of turning things around after his public dispute with Ten Hag.

                      14) Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal
Nicolas Pepe cost Arsenal £72m when he signed from Lille in 2019. There has been talk before and since that then-head coach Unai Emery preferred and wanted to sign Wilfried Zaha, but was given the Crystal Palace star’s fellow Ivory Coast international instead. This Arsenal fan right here was ecstatic when news of Pepe’s transfer broke, nonetheless. What a poor – yet devilishly handsome and charming – sod.

Although Pepe is widely regarded as a massive flop, he did have his moments in an Arsenal shirt. He came up big when Mikel Arteta led the Londoners to FA Cup glory during the Covid-19 pandemic, providing an assist in the semi-final and final. Eighteen goal contributions in his debut year was a decent return, if not a bit underwhelming for someone who cost so much money.

The following season, Pepe claimed 21, including 10 goals in 29 Premier League matches. He came second in the voting for Arsenal’s Player of the Year, though they did finish eighth so some perspective is required. 21/22 was rubbish and the Ivorian spent 12 months back in France with Nice before his contract was terminated in the summer of 2023 following the club’s inability to sell him to Saudi Arabia.

                      13) Kepa Arrizabalaga to Chelsea
The former Athletic Club shot-stopper (that term is being used loosely) is the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, joining Chelsea for a mind-blowing £72m in August 2018.

Since the move, he has only played 12 times for his country, lost his spot as first-choice goalkeeper after two seasons, was replaced by a goalkeeper the Blues signed for around £56m less, who would go on to become the best in his position in Europe before falling off a cliff and giving Kepa another chance to impress.

Football is a funny sport and of course Kepa enjoyed briefly being Real Madrid’s No. 1 goalkeeper last season. He is now on loan at Bournemouth. It’s a natural career trajectory, folks.

Kepa isn’t doing too bad on the south coast, to be fair. He is not quite playing at a £72m level, but yeah, he is doing just fine.

                      12) Harry Maguire to Manchester United
Harry Maguire was signed for a monstrous £80m from Leicester City in the 2019 summer transfer window and did well enough under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be given the captaincy. That unfortunately resulted in even more pressure when the colossal transfer fee was already doing a number on him.

Pressure may well be the main reason for Maguire’s failings, and that argument has only gained weight given his stellar performances last season after being stripped of the captaincy by Ten Hag before 2023/24 kicked off.

The England centre-back is a few places better off than the last time we updated this list (January, 2024). I have a lot of respect for him considering he is still performing pretty well and willing to represent a club with whom he has been consistently scapegoated and abused. Yes, £80m was far too much money and played more than a part in his struggles, but he really wasn’t that bad.

                      11) Paul Pogba to Manchester United
Ah, Paul Pogba. What a player. Manchester United broke the world transfer record in 2016 when they paid £89m to sign the player they released four years before. It is safe to say the Red Devils did not get the player they thought they were buying.

Pogba’s first season back at Old Trafford was actually very good. He scored nine goals and got six assists as Jose Mourinho’s side won the Carabao Cup and Europa League, which was their most recent trophy until Ten Hag ruined all the fun and made United fairly competent in 22/23. The French international played in all 15 European matches and scored in the final win over Ajax. But his (second) debut season at the club was as good as it got for Pogba.

Six goals and 10 assists in the league was a decent return in 17/18, but a bit disappointing for a player of his calibre. The following year was more like it as Pogba scored 16 and assisted 11 in 47 games across all competitions, but then the wheels really started falling off in Solskjaer’s first full season at the helm.

After running the show for France at the World Cup a year before, injuries greatly hindered Pogba’s 19/20 campaign. After another below-average season, Pogba returned to Juventus, joining the Serie A juggernauts on a free transfer for the second time in his career.

He is currently a free agent due to a doping ban. Pogba has had a strange career.

                      10) Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United
Somewhere in between Lukaku’s two spells at Chelsea, he found himself at Manchester United, for whom he looked out of place from his first day at the club.

It simply wasn’t a good fit for a player who joined for £75m after banging in 87 goals in 166 matches for Everton. But 55 goal contributions in 96 United appearances was hardly disastrous, and the fact he was sold for only £8m less than he was bought saves Lukaku from further criticism.

                      9) Darwin Nunez to Liverpool
Darwin Nunez is definitely at the right club in terms of fanbase. Liverpool supporters have rallied around the Uruguayan from day one, making him one of their own. In terms of an actual style on the pitch, he looks a bit lost and always has.

Roberto Firmino was never an incredible goalscorer as Jurgen Klopp’s No. 9, but he offered so much to the team and brought the best out of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, which Nunez has been unable to do.

At the age of 25, the £73m forward is a unique, yet very raw talent and has time to polish his game.

                      8) Wesley Fofana to Chelsea
Similar to Man United’s signing of Sancho, Fofana was pursued by Chelsea for some time before the transfer became official. There was talk of a fee that would eclipse Harry Maguire’s but it did not quite happen. He still, obviously, cost an absolute fortune (around £70m).

Fofana could only manage 17 Premier League appearances in 22/23 and didn’t play once last season due to another serious injury. Fofana only missed one of the Blues’ opening 13 Premier League matches this season and it was through suspension, which was a lovely start for Enzo Maresca, who made the wise decision not to include the Frenchman in his Europa Conference League squad.

After coming off with a hamstring injury on December 1, Fofana has not played, which is quite concerning. He really needs to stop getting injured, which is easier said than done.

                      7) Kai Havertz to Chelsea
Chelsea somehow managed to sell Kai Havertz to Arsenal for £65m, which was a minor miracle given his form for the Blues. His start in north London was indifferent but the debated transfer became justifiable when he became a striker.

Having paid around £72m for Havertz, the Blues only made a £7m loss on a player who was expected to fall out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino. That is pretty good business and one of the reasons the player ranks so high on this list, the other two major factors being the low standard, and the fact he happened to score the only goal in a Champions League final.

Scoring that goal against Manchester City ensured Havertz will always be remembered at Stamford Bridge. Without it, the German might be one of the biggest flops in Chelsea’s history.

                      6) Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea
British record transfer Enzo Fernandez joined the Blues in January 2023 and hasn’t done much wrong, but had not really done anything noteworthy until Maresca joined in the summer.

Fernandez starred for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, being named Young Player of the Tournament ahead of Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol, prompting Todd Boehly to spend all of the 2023 winter transfer window trying to sign him from Benfica. They eventually settled on a record fee paid by a Premier League club, reported to be close to £107m.

The 23-year-old midfielder still has a lot to prove in England, but something tells me he will be just fine. Living up to that price is a whole other story, though. He has to basically be the best in his position for the foreseeable. Good luck fella.

                      5) Josko Gvardiol to Manchester City
Manchester City usually do well in the transfer market. Anyone signed for a modest fee – your Negredos and Nolitos –  do not have a lot of pressure to succeed, while the guys brought in for mega bucks tend to justify it within a season or two.

Josko Gvardiol is one of the best young defenders in the world and his move to the Treble winners was met with moans and groans from rival fans as it looked like they had managed to upgrade on the incredibly consistent Nathan Ake. Ake initially outperformed the Croatian, but the 22-year-old adapted to the Premier League before the turn of the year and was arguably the best defender in the division in the second half of 23/24.

His performances have dipped somewhat this term but that is because the entire City team have forgotten how to play football, so we aren’t judging him too hard.

                      4) Moises Caicedo to Chelsea
Former Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo quietly thrived for Chelsea last season after a noisy debut which had everyone scratching their heads. Producing seven out of tens every week is pretty much what you want from your defensive midfielder, but for a fee expected to reach £115m, is it enough?

Thankfully for Chelsea and Caicedo, he has really stepped things up this season. This is the player we loved at Brighton.

                      3) Jack Grealish to Manchester City
The £100m Manchester City paid for Aston Villa is still an eyebrow-raising fee despite Jack Grealish being on the podium for £70m+ signings.

Grealish had a great 22/23 Treble-winning campaign, improving massively on his first season at City, but still did not look like a £100m footballer. The only leeway he gets is that he cost what he was worth to Villa, where he was club captain and their best player by a country mile.

The 29-year-old took his time to adapt to life at the Etihad, initially underwhelming fans after City paid a record fee for a British player. Once again, there is a bit of leeway as it is not an overnight process becoming a cog in the Pep Guardiola machine, but at £100m, you would hope for a much more seamless transition.

He more than played his part as the Cityzens won the Treble two seasons ago playing 50 times across all competitions, which is impressive considering how much Guardiola loves to rotate. Sixteen goal contributions sounds a little underwhelming but this guy goes further than stats.

This season, His lack of goal involvements are under the microscope more than ever as City continue to drop points every week.

                      2) Declan Rice to Arsenal
Declan Rice has been superb in the Arsenal midfield and there is no doubt that he is the first player on this list to be absolutely worth the money.

This is a signing Arsenal fans would not have considered possible a few years ago, but this is the magnitude of the club’s turnaround under Arteta. Being able to attract Rice is a great sign but there are question marks over his best position in midfield. Is he an out-and-out six or better used as a box-to-box eight? It doesn’t really matter. He is brilliant wherever he plays.

OPINION: Declan Rice ‘travesty’ resolved by Mikel Arteta rewriting the Arsenal cheat code

                      1) Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool
This was never, ever, ever, EVER in doubt.

Virgil van Dijk’s arrival flicked a switch at Anfield. Those silly dropped points against bottom-half sides like Swansea City and West Brom were behind them the day the Dutchman walked through the door. He sorted out their defence without breaking a sweat and was joined by world-class goalkeeper Alisson six months after joining, in a transfer that completed the puzzle for Klopp and made the Reds European, and then Premier League champions.

Since joining Liverpool from Southampton for a fee in the region of £76m in January 2018, Van Dijk has won eight trophies, been named PFA Players’ Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, Champions League Defender of the Season, Liverpool Fans’ Player of the Season, Liverpool Players’ Player of the Season, Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year, and been in the PFA Team of the Year four and UEFA Team of the Year three times. Not too shabby.

He is a rare case of a £70m-plus Premier League signing not turning out to be absolutely pants.
