Man Utd: Mainoo delivers Amorim gut punch like Rashford as five problems emerge in month of misery

Ruben Amorim wants everyone to know that he was well aware of the difficulty of the task at Manchester United before accepting the job. And while we have no doubt he knew it wasn’t going to be plain sailing, with pain inevitably preceding potential glory given the change of formation and the need for some sort of rebuild, we’re also absolutely convinced he didn’t foresee quite such a mess.

He predicted a “storm” but finds himself in a shower of sh*te, and to be fair to the poor b*stard, few prophesied him having to cope with the following five gut punches, which are key contributors to what must have been one of the longest and most stressful months of his life. Erik ten Hag will be rolling in the aisles.

    Marcus Rashford wants out
It all started so well. Rashford was going to be Amorim’s No.9 and he repaid his new manager’s faith in him by scoring three goals in his opening two games, more than he’d managed in his previous 18 Premier League appearances under Ten Hag.

But it always felt as though that was a plan doomed to fail with Rasmus Hojlund the more likely member of the squad to take on the Viktor Gyokeres role thanks to his similar if inferior attributes, and the other two forward positions better suited to pretty much anyone we can think of other than Rashford, whose directness and speed in possession makes him a flying winger and nothing else.

He’s hardly alone in being unsuited to Amorim’s system though, with just one hand required to count the players who fit the 3-4-3 bill, and adaptation may have been possible had Rashford been willing, or at the very least he could have played a key role as a frightening prospect from the bench to pile pressure on tiring opposition defences.

But no, he broke ranks after being dropped for the Manchester derby and announced his desire for a “new challenge” without consulting the club or the manager, who barely had his feet under the table at Old Trafford. We love Rashford and can’t help but wish him well, but it was a d*ck move.

    Kobbie Mainoo already browbeaten
The speed of transition from Great Hope to just another member of the downtrodden cast is truly extraordinary. Only at Manchester United could the youthful exuberance be beaten out of a teenager in such record time.

It’s mad to think Mainoo made his full debut for Manchester United a little over a year ago given the bags and crows feet that now adorn his dead, staring eyes. He was Part Of The Old Trafford Furniture in the best possible way come the end of last season before starring for England at Euro 2024, and the same idiom still rings true, except he’s now a dusty, stained armchair imprinted with the buttocks of a long-since dead tenant in a suburban bedsit that the landlord doesn’t have the funds to modernise.

    Harry Maguire ‘desperation’
Before we go any further, we like Harry Maguire. He may never have been quite good enough for Manchester United but he rarely deserved the bad rap he received and has never been anywhere near the biggest problem at the club.

At the very least, he gives a damn, and as far as we can work out, that is the chief reason for Amorim ‘pushing for’ the club bosses to trigger the option of extending his contract. The report focuses entirely on Maguire’s character, with Amorim viewing him as a ‘trusted’ and ‘reliable’ member of the dressing room.

He’s also pretty good at football, but United have lost three of the four games he’s started under Amorim, conceding eight goals, which again suggests Amorim’s supposed ‘desperation’ to keep him at the club beyond the summer is less about his defensive capability and more about him not being as much of a pr*ck as the majority of his teammates.

We’re not saying it’s a bad decision, but Manchester United being in a position where they need actual Harry Maguire having been convinced he wasn’t good enough for at least the last two seasons and quite possibly a lot longer, is about as clear an indication of the mess they’re in as any.

    Bruno Fernandes is a problem
While we’re on ‘reliable’ footballers, we don’t think Manchester United have any that tick that box as well as the important requirement of being good enough to play for Manchester United. Sorry, a Manchester United that wins stuff. All of the current dross is good enough for the current Manchester United. They’re ideally suited.

Ruben Amorim will have hoped upon arriving at the club that Bruno Fernandes was a banker in that regard. Obviously a talented chap who was actually starting to act a bit like a captain under Amorim, speaking well and reducing his on-field histrionics to isolated incidents of arm flailing, with his wasp-sucking pouts less frequent.

But his ridiculous sending-off against Wolves – his third red card of the season – feels like a line in the sand for a guy who’s been a crutch for Manchester United since his arrival from Sporting nearly five years ago, and perhaps now needs to be kicked from under the Red Devils for them to rehabilitate properly without him.

    Alejandro Garnacho’s not all that
Manchester United fans’ desire to cling to anything offering a semblance of a brighter future led many to overstate the burgeoning talents of Garnacho to an astonishing degree.

Compared at various points to Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and David Beckham, his displays under Amorim have shown a great dearth of talent when measured against those players, with the grit and desire to improve that that trio had in abundance so severely lacking in Garnacho to make such comparisons laughable and insulting.

FIFA have hardly helped Manchester United by handing him an undeserved Puskas award for his acrobatic goal against Everton, with the spoiled little boy’s legs already struggling under the weight of his big head.

Operation “already underway”: PL ace “favourite” to replace error-prone United star who has let Amorim down – report

Manchester United succumbed to their third straight loss in a row on Thursday as relegation battling Wolverhampton Wanderers emerged 2-0 victors at the Molineux.

Set-pieces continue to be the Red Devils’ Achilles heel and Wolves scored directly from a corner through Matheus Cunha, who lobbed Andre Onana in goal, who was being obstructed by a couple of Wolves players.

But this has become a norm in the English game with backup keeper Altay Bayindir similarly caught out against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Interestingly, the United No 1 was at fault for the set-piece goals against Arsenal as well and after a bright start this season, the Cameroonian’s form has slipped badly recently.

      Onana has been poor recently

He has committed high-profile errors both in the league and in Europe and Ruben Amorim is far from pleased with The Daily Star claiming that the Portuguese is on the lookout for a replacement.

He has eyes on Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, who was a target for the Old Trafford side when he was a part of Anderlecht but the 22-year-old chose to move to the South Coast in 2023 instead.

The Seagulls had spent £16.3 million on him last year and will not let him go for less than £30 million with a deal unlikely to be entertained before the conclusion of the current campaign.

“Manchester United have begun the search for a new keeper – and Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is on their radar. Current Reds number one Andre Onana is increasingly unsettled after a number of poor displays, including in the 2-0 Boxing Day defeat at Wolves.

“The United hierarchy are fully aware of the issue surrounding £47.5million Onana – hence the hunt for a top keeper is already underway.

“And at present Dutch international Verbruggen, 22, seems to be the favourite on the Old Trafford stopper shopping-list. With more than three years left on his contract on the South Coast, the Seagulls man, a £16.3m buy from Anderlecht in June 2023, would cost around the £30m mark.”

The Dutch goalie has kept four clean sheets this season while last term he had seven shutouts. He is adept with the ball at his feet and as per Fbref, surpasses Onana’s long passing, completing 50.5% long passes as compared to Onana’s 40.2%.

      Verbruggen a top target

The Brighton shot-stopper is even better when it comes to short-passing with their shot-saving stats almost identical.

The Peoples Person has already relayed that Amorim wants increased competition in between the sticks with United eyeing a number of young goalkeepers across Europe and even South America.

Bayindir has been linked with an exit with the Turk not happy with his lack of minutes and based on his showing against Spurs, he is not likely to last beyond the current season.

Whether Verbruggen is brought in as a No 1 or as a direct competitor for Onana remains to be seen. It will also be interesting to see whether INEOS can afford a new goalie especially with the entire squad in urgent need of a revamp.

INEOS becoming deeply unpopular: “Christmas Scrooge’s” latest penny-pinching drive to hamper former players’ charity – report

INEOS becoming deeply unpopular: “Christmas Scrooge’s” latest penny-pinching drive to hamper former players’ charity – report

INEOS, since becoming co-owners of Manchester United, have been on a cost-cutting spree which has not impressed fans and staff.

They became highly unpopular when they took the decision to raise ticket prices while discounts for youngsters and over-65s were also scrapped, leading to protests with more to follow.

And now, according to The Sun, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also decided to stop funds to the Association of Former Manchester United Players, a charity which helped former footballers who didn’t earn the millions raked in by today’s superstars.

“United used to previously give £40,000 a year to the association which put on four events a year where ex-players can rub shoulders with others who signed professional forms with the club but never made a first-team appearance.”

          AFMUP charity donation cut

The report mentioned how the charity found out about Sir Jim’s latest cost-cutting measure. Trustee Jim Elms, 84, who played for United’s youth team and reserves from 1957 to 1960, said, “We sent a letter to say we’ve not been paid. Nobody came out and told us so we had to send another letter.

“That’s when we started hearing things that it was going to be the end of us.”

The association has, among its 300 members the likes of former skipper Bryan Robson, Alex Stepney, Denis Law, Brian Kidd, Arthur Albiston, Frank Stapleton, Denis Irwin and David May just to name a few.

The move has been widely lambasted with many people unfairly comparing the British billionaire with Scrooge.

A source told the publication, “Everyone knows the club needs to save money but some things just shouldn’t be cut.

“Some of the players who benefit from this organisation never earned a penny from football and aren’t in the best financial circumstances.

Sir Jim’s series of unpopular decisions

“Sir Jim has been clear that United need to save money, but this move has left him looking like a Christmas Scrooge.”

Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man, is worth an estimated £23 billion and claimed he is a local boy while professing his love for the club before INEOS eventually acquired the minority stake.

But since then, he has taken a series of poor decisions which have impacted everyone across the club, starting with 250 job cuts while also cancelling Christmas dinner.

A source close to the club backed INEOS’ call, claiming that the Red Devils are suffering from financial strife after years of mismanagement under the Glazers.

“We are no longer able to make charitable donations to AFMUP while the club is making significant losses. Our focus is on putting the club back on a sustainable financial footing so that we are in a position to invest in our priorities of achieving success on the pitch, and renewing our infrastructure.”

United challenge Liverpool for sensational left-back, ready to offer €15.8m to seal deal – report

United challenge Liverpool for sensational left-back, ready to offer €15.8m to seal deal – report

Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly “fighting” for Lanus left-back Julio Soler, as per reports.

In recent weeks, United have looked second best all over the park under Ruben Amorim, with the Red Devils struggling to both score and defend.

The upcoming January transfer window provides INEOS an opportunity to hand Amorim some relief by bringing in new players capable of executing his ideas. In that regard, the left-wing back spot appears to be the priority position to address.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness issues have forced Amorim to largely rely on right-back Diogo Dalot to cover the position. Dalot struggled as a left-back under Erik ten Hag and he has looked even more shaky as a wing-back.

Reports suggest United are working behind the scenes to bring a new full-back for their new gaffer.

According to Soy del Millo (via Sport Witness), United are willing to pay around €15.8 million to sign Soler from Lanus.

The Argentina U23 international has become one of the most sought after names in Argentinian football, having impressed with his energy and pace down the left flank.

The 19-year-old has already established himself as a first-team regular, having made 43 appearances across all competitions this season.

However, the report claims that United face competition from Liverpool and River Plate, adding the Reds are also willing to pay the aforementioned figure to secure the services of the teen sensation.

River Plate may struggle to match the English clubs’ financial might, but they could guarantee Soler regular playing time.

United are also working on bringing Cerro Porteño left-back Diego Leon to Manchester next summer.

Both Soler and Leon are certainly highly-rated prospects but the pressure of handling both defensive and attacking responsibilities on the left-flank as a wing-back without much time to settle could prove too much for the South American duo.

As such, the Premier League giants would be better off exploring the transfer market for a more experienced star to play in Amorim’s 3-4-3.

United star makes blood-pumping promise to fans despite club’s dramatic fall from grace

Amad Diallo has insisted that he wants to make history at Manchester United despite the club’s ongoing struggles both on and off the pitch.

United suffered a third consecutive defeat across all competitions on Boxing Day, as they were beaten 2-0 by Wolves at Molineux.

The result left United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table and just eight points above the relegation zone. Ruben Amorim – who has lost five of his 10 games at Old Trafford – insisted that the Reds must enter “survival” mode to avoid the possibility of clubs below them catching up.

Amad has been one of the very few positives for United this season. He has managed an impressive five goals and seven assists in 25 matches.

The Ivorian spoke to club media [via FlashScore] and expressed his desire to help turn things around and put the Red Devils back on the right track.

He emphasised that he and United’s other young players have their sights set on taking United back to the top.

“We are part of the project, we have so many young players for this club, especially Garna (Alejandro Garnacho), Kobbie (Mainoo), Joshua (Zirkzee), Rasmus (Hojlund), me, we are young players who want to make history for this club.”

“We want to do our best every game. Sometimes it cannot work, but you can see in the pitch we are very focused to do our best for this club, because we want to bring back this club to the level it was before.”

“So, for the young lads, we just have to keep going, work hard and the most important thing is to listen to the old men, the old players, learn every day.”

He added, “We have now a new manager, he likes to work with young players, and he brings a new system, so we just have to follow it and try to do our best every game.”

Amad has proven to be effective at both right-wing-back and in a slightly more advanced role.

Asked about his versatility, the 22-year-old remarked, “In football this can happen. Don’t be focused in only one position. Sometimes you can play as a defender, sometimes as a striker. Wherever the manager puts me I’m ready to fight for the team.”

“I just want to play, right wing, number 10, anywhere. I say to the manager if you need me as a ‘keeper I’m ready to do my best, I will fight for the team and for my team-mates. I want to make history for this club.”

United are back in action on Monday when they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle. Kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.

Van Nistelrooy unlikely to win the race for United star who is “expected to say goodbye” in 2025 – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United succumbed to their fifth defeat of December on Thursday as Wolverhampton Wanderers ran away with a 2-0 win at the Molineux.

Ruben Amorim has managed to win only seven points from a possible 21 since his arrival with the team languishing in 14th position and if he does not compromise with his vision, a relegation scrap could be on the cards.

The players in the squad do not fit his 3-4-3 style with the Portuguese having to work with a toothless attack and a leaky defence which has conceded 10 goals in the last four games.

The 39-year-old head coach would prefer a revamp in January but INEOS are unlikely to fund a massive transfer spree now, willing to wait till the summer.

                Lindelof to be sold

Still, outgoings are being planned with Victor Lindelof, whose contract ends in 2025, among those linked with an exit in the winter window.

Leicester City, currently managed by former United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, were interested in the Swede but as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Foxes are unlikely to win the race.

The Red Devils would prefer to earn a fee but with the possibility of leaving as a free agent to join a club of his choice, Lindelof, who is currently injured, could choose to see out his remaining days in Manchester instead of jumping ship to join the Foxes, who look primed to get relegated barring a miracle.

“£31 million star Victor Lindelof is expected to say goodbye to the Red Devils in 2025, with his contract due to expire in June,” Romano told Givemesport.

“Man United will be open to listening to proposals in January, but when a player has the chance to be a free agent a few months later it has to be the right opportunity, or he could decide to wait until the summer to find his favourite solution without involving the club.

                Leicester unlikely to sign Swede

“There have been several links between Leicester City and Lindelof due to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s appreciation, but sources guarantee that there are no talks ongoing and probably the Swedish defender will look at different clubs when it’s time to leave Man United.”

The 30-year-old suffered an injury on his first start after returning from injury, and he is too injury-prone to receive a new deal at the club.

The former Benfica ace’s injury problems have restricted him to just 339 minutes across nine appearances in all competitions, and the club cannot afford to carry passengers.

Turkish and Serie A clubs are willing to take a risk with the Sweden international and the chance to play in the Champions League would be a hard deal to turn down for Lindelof in what might be his last major contract.

Fantastic news for United in bid to secure free signing of world-class star as huge update emerges – report

Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their efforts to land Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo as the Spanish club’s bid to re-register him suffered a significant setback.

United could sign Olmo on a free transfer in just four days after a court rejected Barcelona’s efforts to register the playmaker under La Liga regulations, citing their challenging financial situation.

According to Mundo Deportivo [via The Daily Mail], “The Commercial Court 10 of Barcelona made the decision public, announcing that they would not be allowing the Blaugrana to register the midfielder.”

“In response, Barcelona are expected to present a new lawsuit against La Liga in a last-ditch attempt to have their summer signing available for the second-half of the season.”

“It is expected that they will present the argument that the registration rules are invalid because they are regulated by a body that they consider incompetent.”

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Olmo’s agent Andy Bara arrived in Manchester, sparking speculation that the player’s camp are already looking at alternatives.

In addition to United, City and Arsenal are also thought to be keeping close tabs on Olmo and how his situation develops.

Bara was due to attend City’s Premier League clash with Everton at the Etihad on Boxing Day.

Olmo – who joined the Blaugrana in the summer from RB Leipzig in a deal worth around £50million – was a standout performer for Spain as they won Euro 2024, beating England in the final.

He carried his form to Barcelona and registered an impressive six goals and one assist in 15 matches during the first half of the campaign.

The next few days will be crucial in determining Olmo’s future and which club he could play for next if he ends up leaving Barcelona.

Meanwhile, United return to action on Monday when they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Guardiola bottling it like Mourinho as Forest the new Leicester: 2024/2025 echoes 2015/16 PL madness

Guardiola bottling it like Mourinho as Forest the new Leicester: 2024/2025 echoes 2015/16 PL madness

As we approach halfway, it’s already beyond doubt that this Premier League season is the wildest since the great 2015/16 caper and The 5000/1 Leicester Fairytale.

But when you think about it, this season has actually lifted some of that season’s most beloved storylines pretty much wholesale.

East Midlands side turn relegation escape into improbable title challenge under manager unfairly ridiculed for spell at Big Club
All right, Nottingham Forest were never as entirely f***ed last season as Leicester looked in 2014/15 but there were certainly times around that points deduction that it seemed very on. And technically they still ended up closer to relegation than Leicester did; both finished six points above the drop, but Leicester finished 14th with 41 points and Forest 17th with 32. Even allowing for deductions, Forest 23/24 were objectively a worse team than Leicester 14/15.

Now look at them. Forest that is. Don’t look at Leicester, it’s too depressing. Forest, though. Look at them. Bothering all the big boys in fourth having beaten Man United, Villa and Spurs in recent weeks, as well as Brentford away which is legitimately no-banter far more impressive.

Fine, they probably won’t actually win the title, but do you know how many people thought Leicester would sustain their own improbable gravity-defying act all the way to the finish line halfway through 15/16? That’s right, nobody. At that stage the two-horse race in which Spurs finished so embarrassingly third was actually being headed by Arsenal and Man City.

Defending champions going all the way entirely to sh*t
At least in 2016, Chelsea’s dizzying collapse could be put down to Mourinho Third Season Syndrome, a known condition even by that stage albeit one that had never quite delivered as spectacularly as it did then.

Guardiola Ninth Season Syndrome is an entirely new condition we are all experiencing at the same time. It may not be quite so actively toxic as MTTS, but the end results appear similarly catastrophic for the patient with City now inexplicably and wildly flailing around in mid-table after years of absolute dominance. The team that has won six of the last seven titles and finished second when they didn’t win it are currently seventh and falling like a stone.

The good news for City at least is that we can state with high confidence they will bounce back and win the title next season. The bad news for City is that they will have to appoint Antonio Conte to do so, and he’ll huff off a year later after acrimonious scenes in which someone laughs at his hair-hat while he complains darkly about having only been allowed to spend the wealth of a medium-sized nation on three wing-backs when he urgently required four if he was to have any chance of doing his job properly.

There will then be some tricky years containing an inexplicable second Champions League title but also a disastrous and for no obvious good reason repeated experiment with appointing one of the club’s former players as manager chiefly because the media love him for not being rude to them. In Manchester City’s case, this could also actually be actual Frank Lampard, which is a bonus.

                      Big Six blown apart
Chelsea recovered to finish tenth in 2016, but Liverpool finished a lowly eighth with just 60 points as Southampton joined Leicester in the top six.

Fair to say there are a couple of notable Big Six idiots for whom eighth place and/or 60 points currently represents a stretch target.

The good news for either of them should they make it is that good times must logically be just around the corner under an inspirational and charismatic manager who takes over part way through this difficult season and, sure, will need some time to replicate the success he enjoyed in his own league but absolutely has the requisite skills to do so if given time and backing from the board.

The even better news is that one of these two basket-case clubs might even have made such a managerial appointment already. The other, alas, has a big Australian fella who says ‘mate’ a lot in lieu of tactics or game management or defending.

                      Big clubs relegated
An often overlooked element of the 2015/16 madness. The overwhelming and understandable fixation on the oddities in the top half means you might not even look all the way down to find both Newcastle and Aston Villa in the bottom three.

People are still hesitant around widespread use of the Big Eight moniker, with both those potential newcomers to the fold having a bit to do before they can even match Spurs. For all their clownery, Spurs have multiple Champions League qualifications to their name, a solid record of actually finishing in the top six (13 of the last 15 years) and our favourite quirkily Spursy achievement of never once in the Big Six era finishing last of those six clubs. Even when they have a dodgy year, someone has a dodgier one.

But there are also very good and obvious reasons why Newcastle and Villa seem a closer fit to be lumped in with the six than the 12. And in 2015/16, they both managed to get relegated.

All right, you might argue the current trio on course for relegation don’t quite match that big-club profile but that’s very disrespectful to a group that contains two of 2016’s top six. Two clubs in Leicester and Southampton who between them have managed four top-six finishes in the last nine seasons compared to Newcastle and Villa’s combined two.

North London club third in a two-horse race?
Throwing it forward here, and with Chelsea having adroitly achieved what Arsenal themselves did nine years ago in bottling the title race before it even really began around Christmas have created the tantalising possibility for Arsenal to go Full Spurs if they fancy it.

With the title itself now surely a two-horse race in which one horse is already really quite a long way ahead, the opportunity is there for Arsenal to do the funniest thing in their humourless history by stumbling over the line once their slender title hopes have evaporated entirely and being pipped to second place by Chelsea.

Just a shame Arsenal have already been to Stamford Bridge and thus cannot actually lose the title there as they spend the evening booting players up in the air and somehow not getting any red cards for it.

But there is a trip to Liverpool themselves in May that could absolutely fit the bill.

Could be scenes for the ages there. The Battle of Anfield. Declan Rice just repeatedly booting Mo Salah up the arse without good reason or, for some reason, any punishment whatsoever. Leandro Trossard standing on stricken players’ hands while the officials aren’t looking. VAR staying out of it because reasons. Arsenal even have recent history for throwing away two-goal leads at Anfield as a title chase implodes.
