United challenge Liverpool for sensational left-back, ready to offer €15.8m to seal deal – report

Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly “fighting” for Lanus left-back Julio Soler, as per reports.

In recent weeks, United have looked second best all over the park under Ruben Amorim, with the Red Devils struggling to both score and defend.

The upcoming January transfer window provides INEOS an opportunity to hand Amorim some relief by bringing in new players capable of executing his ideas. In that regard, the left-wing back spot appears to be the priority position to address.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness issues have forced Amorim to largely rely on right-back Diogo Dalot to cover the position. Dalot struggled as a left-back under Erik ten Hag and he has looked even more shaky as a wing-back.

Reports suggest United are working behind the scenes to bring a new full-back for their new gaffer.

According to Soy del Millo (via Sport Witness), United are willing to pay around €15.8 million to sign Soler from Lanus.

The Argentina U23 international has become one of the most sought after names in Argentinian football, having impressed with his energy and pace down the left flank.

The 19-year-old has already established himself as a first-team regular, having made 43 appearances across all competitions this season.

However, the report claims that United face competition from Liverpool and River Plate, adding the Reds are also willing to pay the aforementioned figure to secure the services of the teen sensation.

River Plate may struggle to match the English clubs’ financial might, but they could guarantee Soler regular playing time.

United are also working on bringing Cerro Porteño left-back Diego Leon to Manchester next summer.

Both Soler and Leon are certainly highly-rated prospects but the pressure of handling both defensive and attacking responsibilities on the left-flank as a wing-back without much time to settle could prove too much for the South American duo.

As such, the Premier League giants would be better off exploring the transfer market for a more experienced star to play in Amorim’s 3-4-3.
