Lightning strikes twice: this ridiculous error was the root cause of United’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle in fast-paced encounter

Manchester United fell to a 2-0 loss at home to Newcastle United on Monday night, extending their humiliating losing streak to four games on the trot in all competitions.

After losing three matches on the trot, manager Ruben Amorim would have no doubt been desperate to come away with a result, particularly as United closed out 2024 with their final match of the year in front of the Old Trafford crowd.

Sadly, it wasn’t to be, with poor man-marking by a stagnant defence resulting in not just one but both of the goals that the visitors put away.

Just over the three-minute mark, the visitors found the back of the net. In what was Newcastle’s first proper attack of the evening, Anthony Gordon thumped a cross to Aleksander Isak, who headed the ball into the back of the net. Amorim must have been wondering why both Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez did not close the striker down.

For the opening 10 minutes, it was one-way traffic with the visitors in firm control. Isak was determined to double his tally with a shot from the edge of the box, only for Maguire to block his attempt.

17 minutes in, Isak was on the prowl yet again. Maguire did well to shut the striker down as he approached the box, limiting his sight of goal and forcing a soft shot that Andre Onana caught with ease.

In a repeat of the first goal, Newcastle got on a quick breakaway, with Gordon replicating his earlier cross, this time finding the head of Joelinton. 2-0 to Newcastle in front of an anxious Old Trafford crowd.

25 minutes in, Sandro Tonali unleashed a powerful long-range effort that was deflected out for a corner. Fortunately, Onana was able to punch the ball out of play, preventing yet another goal from a corner against a brittle United defence.

In the 30th minute, Isak whipped in a shot from the corner of the box that flew past Onana into the far corner of the net. Fortunately for United, the goal was ruled offside, saving the hosts from even more humiliation.

Barely a minute later, Tonali and Gordon enjoyed an exchange, cutting through United’s defence into the box. Tonali beat Onana, only for his shot to reverberate against the post.

32 minutes in, Amorim already made a substitution. Kobbie Mainoo came on to replace Joshua Zirkzee, who immediately headed down the tunnel. One could only imagine his frustration at being taken off so early on.

A minute later, Rasmus Hojlund got on the end of a quick counter, with his shot veering across the face of the goal. While off-target, the shot at least signalled United’s first proper attacking motion of the match so far.

After three minutes of stoppage time were announced, Mainoo intercepted the ball in the final third. He expertly threaded the ball to Casemiro, who fluffed his lines and blasted the ball wide in what should have been a straightforward scoring opportunity.

It was a dire half for United, who were absolutely dominated at home with very limited scoring prospects.

United appeared to be stepping things up at the start of the second half, with Casemiro drilling a decent cross into the box that the goalkeeper caught. The mood around the stadium appeared to be brighter, with fans hopeful that United could still turn the game around.

On the hour mark, the unlikeliest of players came close to pulling one back for United. Maguire burst forward, firing a header towards the goal that hit the upright. Suddenly, United sparked to life in the final third.

Martinez was shown a yellow card for a rough challenge on Isak past the halfway line. It appeared as if Martinez was determined to stop the striker before he could use his pace to expose United’s defence yet again.

In the 65th minute, Casemiro made way for Alejandro Garnacho while Leny Yoro replaced Martinez.

In the 74th minute, United won a corner. Eriksen’s cross was good, finding Yoro’s head. Unfortunately, his shot breezed just wide.

United looked threatening in the visitors’ box on the 80-minute mark, with Amad and Hojlund both attempting shots that were blocked while Eriksen skied the follow-up.

Antony came on for Matthijs de Ligt, with Amorim seemingly looking to ramp up United’s attack in search of a late goal.

Three minutes of stoppage time were announced, but United were unable to make any further inroads during this time. 2-0 the score remained as United suffered yet another crushing defeat.

Amorim will need to do some serious reflection as he looks to improve United’s fortunes in 2025. January transfer market action appears to be vital.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez, Hojlund, Zirkzee, Eriksen, Amad, Casemiro, Dalot
    Subs: Mainoo, Garnacho, Yoro, Antony

Three things we learnt as United sink to new depths in depressing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle

Manchester United welcomed Newcastle United to Old Trafford looking for a win to end 2024 on some sort of a high.

Andre Onana started in goal with Harry Maguire, Matthijs De Ligt and captain for the night, Lisandro Martinez forming the back three.

Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot were once again the wing backs with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen replacing Kobbie Mainoo and the suspended Manuel Ugarte in the midfield.

Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund formed the attacking trio for the Red Devils.

Here are three things we learnt from the match.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen brushed aside

Ruben Amorim was forced to play Casemiro and Eriksen due to Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte’s suspensions and they were brutally exposed by an electric Newcastle midfield.

The pair performed well in their debut season under Erik ten Hag in 2022/2023 but have declined massively since then.

United’s midfield was overrun with ease and the Old Trafford club found themselves 2-0 down after just 19 minutes and in truth, it could have been more.

The Red Devils only managed three shots to Newcastle’s 11 in the first half and could not live with the rampant Magpies.

Such was the damage, Kobbie Mainoo had to be brought on for Joshua Zirkzee after only 33 minutes to try and shore up the midfield.

Ineos reportedly are keen to offload the Dane and the Brazilian and on the basis of this display, it is glaringly obvious why.

United have no idea how to defend crosses

Much has been written about the Red Devils’ inability to defend set pieces but it looks like the problem is even deeper than this.

Starting Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt in a back three should mean United are quite good at protecting their goal in the air.

Nothing could be further from the truth as Alexander Isak and later Joelinton waltzed into the penalty area to score uncontested headers in front of an exasperated Stretford End.

Ruben Amorim has claimed that he needs more time to work on these issues on the training pitch, but these are the basics of football that even Championship sides would be embarrassed to concede from.

      3-4-3 not working

Ruben Amorim’s preferred style is not working at Manchester United. Fans have been left divided about whether or not he should stick to his guns or adapt to try and stem the flow of goals and losses.

There will be much sympathy for the former Sporting Lisbon manager who has come into an almost impossible situation with a squad who are so poorly prepared for his style of football.

Whilst the vast majority of supporters will back Amorim and want him to do what he thinks is best to solve the gaping issues at the club, his players look totally lost on the pitch and do not seem to have any idea how to perform the tasks he is asking them to do.

The truth is, with Liverpool and Arsenal to come in January, Amorim has a huge decision to make on whether he persists or tries to tweak his system to get some confidence back into a team who appear bereft of ideas and will to fight.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.

Zirkzee was shambolic but this United star should never play for the club again after loss vs. Newcastle

Manchester United fell to a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle at Old Trafford. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 4 – Well and truly beaten for all two goals. Weak from crosses yet again.

Matthijs de Ligt 4 – Got spun more than once. Not the best performance on his return to the starting XI.

Harry Maguire 5 – Could have perhaps done better for Alexander Isak’s headed finish early in the opening 45 minutes. Nearly got on the score sheet in the second half but he hit the post with his effort.

Lisandro Martinez 2 – Very poor. Didn’t get tight enough to Isak for Newcastle’s opener and Joelinton towered over him moments later for their second of the match.

Noussair Mazraoui 2 – Extremely slow start to the game. Targeted for both goals, which saw him fail to close down his man before the cross went in. Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon had so much joy down his flank, especially in the first half.

Casemiro 1 – Leggy performance. Misplaced passes, aimless long-balls, slow in possession and offered very little protection to the defenders. Missed United’s best chance of the game just before the interval. Just a liability in midfield and ideally, should be moved on as soon as possible.

Christian Eriksen 3 – Offered next to nothing off the ball. Dominated over and over. Another player the club should part ways with at the earliest opportunity.

Diogo Dalot 5 – Did well to contain the in-form Jacob Murphy but that was just about it. Didn’t offer an awful lot going forward, which is needed of a wing-back in Ruben Amorim’s system.

Joshua Zirkzee 1 – Disastrous in the left 10. Just shambolic and brutally hooked in the first half. An outing to forget for the Dutchman.

Amad Diallo 5 – Awful like most of his teammates in the first half as he struggled to get anywhere. Got slightly better in the second half. Primary source of whatever little threat United posed to the visitors after the break.

Rasmus Hojlund 2 – Another nothing and hopeless performance. Struggled to hold up the ball and bring his teammates into play. Had a good chance to score but dragged his shot wide.

        Substitutes

Kobbie Mainoo 7 – Came on while United were under the cosh but helped restore some control in the middle of the park. Kept it nice and simple and created a good chance for Casemiro, which the Brazilian failed to put into the back of the net. Injected some much-needed physicality and intensity in a midfield consisting of Casemiro and Eriksen. Mainoo can certainly hold his head high despite the defeat to Eddie Howe’s men.

Alejandro Garnacho 4 – Waste of a substitute. No impact whatsoever.

Leny Yoro 6 – Much better compared to Martinez. Almost opened his United goalscoring account but his header was went wide. Should be starting games for United moving forward.

Antony 5 – On the pitch for a limited period.

Man Utd: Amorim makes shock Rashford decision as ‘most likely’ transfer hits stumbling block

Marcus Rashford’s ‘most likely’ transfer in January has hit a significant stumbling block with a shock Ruben Amorim decision raising further doubts over the Manchester United star’s future.

Rashford announced his desire for “a new challenge” in a bombshell interview with Henry Winter earlier this month on the back of being dropped for the Manchester derby.

The England international has been criticised for failing to consult with the club or Amorim before that revelation and hasn’t been named in a matchday squad, with the new head coach forced to bat away questions about the forward in nigh on every press conference since.

It was assumed there was no way back, but United’s continuing struggles, heightened by the suspension of captain Bruno Fernandes after his daft sending off against Wolves, means Amorim has made the shock decision to include Rashford in the Red Devils squad for the visit of Newcastle on Monday.

Reintegration back into the squad may well be good news for Rashford, who may otherwise be facing a season without further football as there’s a problem with his ‘most likely’ transfer.

ESPN report that Rashford’s best bet of a transfer is to Saudi Arabia as they suspect the limited interest from European clubs in the summer for his services likely rules out a January offer.

Paris Saint-Germain have been interested in the past but have moved on from signing marquee players like Rashford, and the forward’s £325,000 per week wages is a barrier for them as it will be for the vast majority of clubs on the continent.

That’s not a problem for Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs, but foreign player quotas are.

But the SPL confirmed on Monday that all 18 of its clubs were at their maximum quota of eight foreign players over the age of 21, insisting teams would be required to “terminate contracts, sell players, or deregister squad members” in order to add new players in the winter window.

“The SPL will work closely with clubs and the Financial Sustainability Committee to ensure compliance with league policies and regulations,” a league statement read.

A report in The Telegraph outlines the interest from SPL clubs, but also claims Rashford’s desire to regain his England spot may well rule out the move to Saudi Arabia.

          The report states:

‘Rashford would be of interest to the top four SPL clubs – Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli – although there has also been talk of newly promoted Al-Qadsiah, who are not one of the Public Investment Fund-owned clubs but are well-financed, wanting him.

‘The biggest stumbling block would be Rashford’s expected reluctance to quit top European football.

‘In a bombshell interview this month announcing he wanted a fresh challenge, the 27-year-old stressed he was desperate to revive his England career and knows that he must be playing top-level football to earn a recall under new head coach Thomas Tuchel.’

Confirmed United XI vs Newcastle: Zirkzee and Hojlund both start, Rashford back in squad

Marcus Rashford is back in the Manchester United matchday squad for tonight’s Premier League match against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Rashford has been omitted from four consecutive squads after giving an interview in which he said he is ready for a new challenge.

The England man is on the bench tonight.

In the starting XI, Andre Onana is in goal.

The back three are Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are the wingbacks.

Experienced pair Casemiro and Christian Eriksen form the midfield pivot.

Up front, Amad and Joshua Zirkzee will support Rasmus Hojlund.

This means there is still no place for Alejandro Garnacho in the starting XI.

Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are suspended while Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof and Mason Mount are injured.

Joining Rashford and Garnacho on the bench are Altay Bayindir, Leny Yoro, Godwill Kukonki, Tyrell Malacia, Toby Collyer, Kobbie Mainoo and Antony.

This means there is no place for Jonny Evans, suggesting he is either ill or injured.

Kick off at Old Trafford is at 8pm.

“Sources have suggested…”: United wonderkid set for first-team debut after Amorim’s frustration with senior options – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim’s tactics are the polar opposite of what former boss Erik ten Hag had in mind with the Portuguese looking to play a possession-based game as opposed to a transition-heavy style.

In plenty of games, the Red Devils have had more of the ball including in defeats to Arsenal and Wolves but they have looked toothless in attack, something the coach is desperate to fix.

Rasmus Hojlund seems like he has regressed while summer signing Joshua Zirkzee does not look like a striker and both are better off playing as substitutes than starting games.

With Marcus Rashford’s future also uncertain, the Red Devils are in desperate need of goals if they are to have any chance of climbing back up the table.

              United need goalscorers

Judging from recent reports, the Red Devils are unlikely to go berserk in the winter window and at best, a left wingback could be brought in, not an elite goalscorer.

And as per The Manchester Evening News, the solution could come from within the academy with Chido Obi potentially having everything in his locker to come up with the required goods.

United’s swoop for the former Arsenal prodigy in the summer was termed as a coup and the 17-year-old has seven goals from as many games as well as one assist.

He has also featured once off the bench in the UEFA Youth League and it seems there is a high probability of him earning his first team debut before the current season concludes.

“Sources have suggested Chido Obi-Martin could make his debut before the end of the campaign. That was ostensibly one of his demands if he had stayed at Arsenal.

              Chido Obi debut

“Seven goals in seven youth team games for United would suggest he has a chance with Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund out of their depth,” wrote Samuel Luckhurst.

Chido Obi was left frustrated with his pathway to senior football at the Gunners and hence his decision to move to Old Trafford and judging from the performances of Hojlund and Zirkzee, the youngster surely cannot do any worse.

United have plenty of promising academy forwards waiting in the wings. Gabriele Biancheri has been on fire, netting 16 goals in 17 games while excelling for both the U18s and U21s.

There is also 18-year-old Ethan Wheatley, who has four caps for the senior team. If Amorim does not have him in his immediate plans, a loan could be on the cards.

Man Utd: Bombshell Ruben Amorim report details INEOS summer snub as reason for struggles laid bare

Manchester United turned down the chance to hire Ruben Amorim in the summer for a reason that’s currently costing them in the Premier League.

Amorim has now lost more games than he’s won as Manchester United boss, with unforeseen gut punches adding to what was always going to be a very difficult job at Old Trafford.

A huge problem for the Portuguese boss is the limited training time he has with his players in the middle of a season, making a change of formation and style particularly difficult.

But it’s that change of style that led Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to reject the chance to hire him in the summer according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

Discussing the issue of players getting up to speed with Amorim’s plans, Crook said: “That’s on INEOS then, isn’t it?

“They did pre-season with one manager playing one style of football – not that we ever really knew what it was – then they spent a load of money to get players suited to that manager before firing him.”

Troy Deeney replied: “And now they’ve gone a completely different route.”

Crook continued: “Also, I know this for a fact, that ownership were offered Ruben Amorim in the summer when they were doing a beauty parade of different managers.

“They were speaking to Roberto De Zerbi, Kieran McKenna, Thomas Tuchel and they said no to Amorim because his style didn’t fit this Man United squad.

“They then hired him X amount of weeks later. It doesn’t fill you with confidence, does it?”

Sam Matterface took a different stance, claiming: “It does because knowing that information it shows that they’re clearly planning for the long term rather than the short term.

“That should probably fill you with more confidence!”

But Crook replied: “Nothing that they’ve done so far has filled me with confidence.”

Deeney then provided some insight into exactly why pre-season is so important in getting ready for a new season.

He explained: “There’s fit, match fit and tactically fit- there’s different ways of doing it.

“The problem this manager is going to have is getting these players fit during the season.

“I’ve missed pre-season twice in my career due to injury – that season I may have done okay but I never once felt good. Pre-season is huge as a player.”

Meanwhile, in something of a surprise development, Marcus Rashford is back in the United squad to face Newcastle on Monday.

The England international hasn’t been included in a matchday squad since he told journalist Henry Winter that he’s seeking a “new challenge”.

Rashford’s reintegration may well be good news for him as it doesn’t look as though he will have a wide array of options for a transfer in the January transfer window.

There is also 18-year-old Ethan Wheatley, who has four caps for the senior team. If Amorim does not have him in his immediate plans, a loan could be on the cards.

“I adapt quickly”: United star defiantly backs himself amidst sea of recent criticism

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has backed his ability to adapt to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation in a rather bizarre post on the club’s official website.

The article is penned under the name of Harry Maguire. Presumably this was a mistake on the part of the editors rather than a new initiative in which United stars write articles about each other.

Such is the shoddy standard of the piece, it is hard to know which is true. Ineos’ cost cutting starting to bite, perhaps.

The article starts with the quaint statement “Lisandro Martinez says he sees passion and determination in Ruben Amorim’s eyes as our new head coach aims to take Manchester United forward.”

Martinez is then quoted as saying:

“When you say good morning to him and look at his eyes, you see everything.”

“I see a lot of passion from him and his desire to put Manchester United in the highest levels, in the way he’s here every day in the training and in the games.”

In a more normal section of the piece, Martinez responds to the heavy criticism he received from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, who branded him a “worry” and questioned his ability to play in a back three.

Commenting on his substantial game time under the new boss, the defender asserted, “I think I’m a player who adapts in every system, I take the information and I adapt quickly.”

The Argentine also lavished praise on Amorim’s ability to communicate his ideas to the team and assured fans that the team already know what they should be doing, in spite of the lacklustre results.

“And with him, with Ruben, I always have an options to play, I always have some teammates there to pass the ball, and movement as well in the front, and defensive as well.”

“We are in a high line [and] when we press high, I know where to go. He give us all the information, which is really good for us.”

Martinez was also quick to highlight Amorim’s ability to connect with his new players and backed him to return United back to the upper echelons of English football.

Martinez and Amorim will hope to start the long journey back to the top with a win against Newcastle United later tonight, with kick off scheduled for 20.00 UK time at Old Trafford.

As for Maguire’s budding career as a football writer, we would advise him not to give up his day job.

“Of course I like…”: La Liga midfield ace finally responds to reports linking him with a summer switch to United

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is under pressure after overseeing five defeats this December while winning less points from his first seven games than predecessor Erik ten Hag had accrued in his final seven matches.

The Portuguese wants two midfielders with Christian Eriksen and Casemiro unlikely to provide the intensity he demands while Bruno Fernandes does not look like a natural fit in his system.

A versatile midfielder who can play as part of a double pivot and as a No 10 will be ideal for the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss and right on cue, the Red Devils were linked with a move for Real Sociedad star Luka Sucic.

The Croatia international moved to San Sebastian from RB Salzburg in the summer in a deal reported to be worth €10 million and has become a regular for the Txuri-Urdin.

                      United need midfielders

He has started 15 games in all competitions, playing both in a withdrawn role as well as a No 10 and has managed one goal and a solitary assist.

The 22-year-old feels he has adapted well with the Spanish game and his performances have caught the eye of United, something which has delighted the Croatia international.

As per Sportske Novosti, it was Christopher Vivell, head of recruitment at United, who had sought out information about the former RB Salzburg star, where Vivell was chief scout earlier.

“United is a global giant, a respected giant in the world of football. Of course I like having my name associated with the Red Devils, but I say that it won’t knock me out of my rhythm. I’m firmly on the ground!

                      Sucic on United interest

“They told me about such a possibility that appeared in public. Later I read about it myself. No one called me from England.

“I am under contract to Real Sociedad, where I am doing well, nice, where I have fit in perfectly. Have the clubs talked? I don’t know, and the topic doesn’t bother me. There have been headlines like that before, and there will be again.”

As relayed by The Peoples Person, the 20-time English league champions are prepared to launch an operation worth €40 million to land Sucic.

The Basque outfit would find it hard pressed to turn down such an offer next summer. Whether INEOS actually go after him remains to be seen.
