United star “welcomes” a departure from Old Trafford with “no major obstacles” for January exit – report

Casemiro has reportedly agreed to leave Manchester United in January with Saudi Arabia looking to be his most likely destination.

The Brazilian was brilliant in his first season at Old Trafford after arriving from Real Madrid in 2022.

Things have gone extremely pear-shaped since then as he has proven time and time again he is no longer up to the rigours of Premier League football.

The Brazilian has rarely been used since Ruben Amorim became coach but was given a chance last night with suspensions to Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes.

The result was a disaster class of a showing where he was completely overwhelmed alongside Christian Eriksen by a rampant Newcastle United midfield.

There have been significant rumours that United want to sell the player to free up wage space and the Brazilian press report that Casemiro may have finally accepted his fate.

According to UOLEsporte, “the Saudi Arabian Sovereign Fund is determined to move forward with the signing of Casemiro now in the January transfer window.”

“The interest is not new, but the player’s status at Manchester United favours accelerating the process.”

Due to the lack of first team action the 32 year old is experiencing at the moment, he “welcomes a transfer to Saudi football at the start of 2025. There would therefore be no major obstacles to his departure.”

“At this time, the Fund has not yet decided which club to send the Brazilian star to, because it is waiting to confirm the number of foreigners in the squads of Al-Hilal and Al Nassr” but his name is “highly regarded” throughout the league.

Al Nassr in particular could be seen as a realistic destination due to his successful relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo from their trophy-laden days with Real Madrid.

A departure from United in January would do wonders for their PSR situation and could help add valuable wiggle room to their finances to assist in signing a much needed player or two in the winter market.

Amorim “not against the idea” of signing Serie A winner in January but Newcastle could stun them yet again – report

Manchester United have lost their last four games while conceding 10 goals with set-pieces proving to be their Achilles heel and Ruben Amorim will be desperate to stop the backline from leaking further goals.

United are languishing in 14th position and with the attack looking toothless at the moment, the defence has to be watertight if the club are to climb back up the Premier League table.

AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori could be on his way out with a recent report by Gazzetta dello Sport claiming the 27-year-old has been transfer listed by the Rossoneri.

As per Teamtalk, the former Chelsea ace has instructed his agent to get him back to the Premier League and back when Erik ten Hag was in charge, the England international was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.

      Tomori up for grabs

The Red Devils eventually opted to sign Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt but with Victor Lindelof injured and likely to leave, and the team really struggling at the back, the head coach is not against the idea of going after the Englishman in January.

The Serie A winner has made nine Serie A appearances this season but has not started a league game since October, with his current market value standing at €22 million.

Newcastle are however, said to be in pole position with Milan valuing Tomori at around €30 million.

“Manchester United could reignite their interest in AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori, as the centre-back has reportedly been transfer listed by the Italian giants.

      Newcastle leading the race

“TEAMtalk understands that Ruben Amorim is not against the idea of Man Utd signing another centre-back in January, following the recent injury to Victor Lindelof.

“Tomori wants his agent to prioritise talks with Premier League clubs, as he would ideally like to return to England. However, TEAMtalk understand that Newcastle is a more likely destination for the England international than Man Utd.”

If not in January, Monday’s loss to the Magpies makes it pretty clear that defensive improvements are needed once the season concludes.

Tomori is relatively young and has the experience of playing in the Premier League, both qualities INEOS quite like. But whether they go after him remains to be seen.

Amorim leeway gone as ‘horrific’ Man Utd star spares him the entire blame vs Newcastle

Amorim leeway gone as ‘horrific’ Man Utd star spares him the entire blame vs Newcastle

Ruben Amorim has got away with Manchester United being sh*te up to now. But that defeat is mainly on him and a little bit on his “horrific” centre-back.

After half an hour, Gary Neville described Manchester United as “the worst pound-for-pound football team in the country”, just before Joshua Zirkzee was cheered off the pitch by his own fans, shortly after Sandro Tonali hit the post while trying to walk in Newcastle’s third goal in one of the most one-sided Premier League games we’ve ever seen.

The writing was on the wall as soon as the teamsheets were released, and while Marcus Rashford was the story, his return buried what should have been the lede: Christian Eriksen and Casemiro starting together in midfield. Insanity.

Ruben Amorim has been given a gentler ride than Manchester United’s terrible results and even worse performances deserve so far. New system, off-pitch problems, limited time to train, yada yada yada. But there is no excuse for playing those two together, an indefensible decision no matter who Manchester United are playing, but particularly deplorable against arguably the most dynamic and in-form midfield three in the Premier League.

We would be scouring the Under-15s for No.6s before turning to that pair as there is simply no way they weren’t going to be overpowered, outrun and outplayed against Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. As it proved, with both of Newcastle’s goals featuring the ball being popped quickly and easily around one or both of Casemiro and Eriksen in midfield, before going out to the left ahead of a delivery into the box.

A lot was made by the Sky Sports pundits ahead of the game about the team selection being dictated by United’s horrendous record when defending corners and set pieces. It goes some way to explaining Casemiro’s inclusion and a long way to explaining Zirkzee’s, with Amorim confirming ahead of the game that he did have the Dutchman’s height and physicality in mind, both in attack and defence.

That plan was ripped up after 33 minutes when Zirkzee was withdrawn for Mainoo, much to the delight of a significant number of United fans, who were at least as glad to see the back of Zirkzee as they were pleased to see his replacement take to the field.

In the same way as you might describe a rabbit being taken for a walk on a lead or using a spoon to eat your Christmas dinner, Neville described Amorim’s view that Zirkzee is more of a No.10 than a No.9 as “interesting” before watching him in what could very well be his last ever performance for United. He’s already been heavily linked with a return to Serie A and we suspect if he hasn’t already been in touch with his agent to follow up on those leads while watching the last hour from the bench at Old Trafford he soon will be.

Lisandro Martinez lasted twice as long as Zirkzee before being hooked for Leny Yoro but will be very fortunate to be in the team for what looks likely to be a harrowing clash against Liverpool on January 5. He didn’t bother to mark actual Alexander Isak for Newcastle’s first, before failing to get off the ground as Joelinton barged in the second. As Neville said on co-comms, his defending was “horrific”, in that moment and others, in this game and others this season.

Entirely predictably, despite having his youthful exuberance stripped away this season, Mainoo made a big difference after he came on, for no greater reason than being able to run. Having been wholly embarrassed on their own patch by Newcastle in the first half an hour, it was a pretty even game from that point on, with United arguably having the better of it.

Which only increases the blame and criticism that should be levelled at Amorim, whom we would give some credit for recognising his mistake early doors if it wasn’t so obvious and awful. And while nothing changes after this result – he still needs time, better players and all the rest of it – it’s got to be a concern that a head coach that’s spent any time with this Manchester United squad deems a Casemiro-Eriksen axis workable and Zirkzee as a between-the-lines forward who can link the play between those infirm midfielders and a goal-shy striker.

After Ipswich’s shock win over Chelsea, Amorim’s side are now just seven points above the relegation zone and in relegation form after five defeats in their last six. And Amorim can now expect the pressure on him to ramp up exponentially having thrown away all of his free passes, with leeway expunged and the worst honeymoon in history brought very much to an end after making baffling and inexcusable decisions that gave Manchester United no chance against a Newcastle team that couldn’t believe their luck.

“Embarrassed” Amorim blames his players’ on-pitch struggles on this “really hard” reason after loss to Newcastle

“Embarrassed” Amorim blames his players’ on-pitch struggles on this “really hard” reason after loss to Newcastle

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has attributed his players’ on-pitch struggles to a lack of sufficient training time and the challenge of establishing a strong tactical foundation.

Amorim spoke to reporters after United were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton scored in the first half to condemn the Red Devils to a fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions.

The result left United in 14th place in the Premier League table with just 22 points at the halfway stage of the season.

The Red Devils are only seven points above Ipswich Town, who occupy the third relegation slot. In his interview with BBC, Amorim admitted that United are in a battle to beat the drop this season.

He told journalists in his press conference, “It’s really hard. I think it’s really hard on everybody and you can feel it on the pitch. I think we showed some improvements in the first games, especially against City, Tottenham and even at Arsenal in the first half.”

“But we are losing that with the lack of training and the lack of belief after so many losses and some difficult moments, you suffer some goals in the beginning of games and then it’s really hard during all the games.”

“It’s a really tough moment for everybody and I think the players losing everything, the small things we try to work on in training, they lose everything.”

“They don’t have time to build the base to cope with difficult moments, so it’s really hard in this moment.”

Amorim conceded that he is embarrassed by United’s league position.

“Yeah, it’s also my fault in this moment because I think the team is not improving. I think it’s a little bit lost in this moment, so it’s a little bit embarrassing to be a Manchester United coach and to lose a lot of games. But we have to cope with difficult moments in the life of everybody, so it’s a hard moment.”

“When you have these kind of moments, especially in the big clubs, you work really hard to turn things around, especially when you don’t have a lot of time to train the basics to cope with the difficult moments.”

“So we have to acknowledge our position the way you see the league, that everybody can beat everybody, so we have to win games and to focus on surviving.”

He added, “I’m responsible, I don’t like to arrive here and make excuses. I think people are tired of excuses in this club and I think sometimes I talk about relegation because of that. I think our club needs a shock, you know?”

“It needs a shock and we have to understand that. It’s a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game and implement the idea to win games.”

“And also to have a performance because I think we are losing some things from the last games.”

Amorim’s side are set to return to action in their first match of 2025, taking on Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, January 5.

0 dribbles, 14x possession lost, 60% duels lost: This Ten Hag signing not good enough to start games for United

Manchester United lost their sixth game this December, ending the year with a shambolic 0-2 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday.

The visitors scored both their goals in the first half and did not really have to exert themselves thereafter as the hosts struggled for any real fluency throughout the game.

And the poor run of form does not look like it will end anytime soon with league leaders Liverpool up next followed by an FA Cup tie away to Arsenal.

Ruben Amorim is having to pay the price for poor recruitment, both under the Glazers and INEOS, with the team clearly not suited to playing his possessional brand of football.

            Rasmus was poor yet again

Against the Magpies, the Portuguese head coach was forced to take off Joshua Zirkzee early after a poor start but he could have done the same with fellow strike partner Rasmus Hojlund as well.

The Dane struggled to hold up the ball under pressure, a problem that has plagued him since his arrival in England. He managed to win only 40 percent of all his duels, another poor return.

The 21-year-old had the chance to spark a comeback but fluffed his lines from a brilliant chance and hardly threatened thereafter.

The United No 1 did not manage a single dribble and ended the game with a poor pass completion rate of 75 percent while losing possession 14 times.

Hojlund did not attempt a single long ball or cross and managed 0 defensive contributions throughout his 90 minute stay on the pitch (all stats via sofascore).

Not ready to lead the line

A year on from his big-money move from Atalanta, back when Erik ten Hag was in charge, the striker still does not look ready to lead the line for a club of United’s size and ambition and he is much better served playing as a substitute.

He has potential but the Red Devils need a lot more than potential to climb back up the table and INEOS have to deliver in the winter window.

If they do not support Amorim in January, things could get even worse in the coming months with the team languishing in 14th position, just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

The head coach’s style does work but only if he has the right players. This squad is not built in his own image and he might pay the ultimate price if results do not improve soon.

Amorim makes alarming admission about United after defeat vs. Newcastle, fans will be horrified

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has admitted that his side may currently be embroiled in a battle to beat the drop, following their 2-0 defeat against Newcastle.

Newcastle ran United ragged in the first half, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggling to cope with the visitors’ midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.

The Magpies’ goals were grabbed by Alexander Isak and Joelinton.

United remain 14th in the Premier League table and have now lost three consecutive games at home for the first time since the 1962/63 season.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to BBC and gave his verdict on United’s current woes.

He said, “It is really hard. It is one of the worst moments in the history of our club, and we have to accept that. Another loss in front of our own supporters.”

“In this moment it is really tough to turn around results because we don’t have a lot of time to train the base of the way we want to play. In the bad situations you need that base to hold on to. In the second half they really tried, it was more like the value of the team.”

“We were close to scoring once but they were better.”

He added, “Yes we are [too easy to score against] but also in some moments we had some chances to score and didn’t and that also makes a difference.”

On whether this season may be a fight to avoid the drop, Amorim replied, “I think that it is a possibility and we have to be clear with our fans. We have to change something but this season will be really hard on everybody. It can make us stronger and we have to fight.”

Before the break, while United were struggling to get a foothold in the game, Amorim looked to his bench and brought on Kobbie Mainoo in place of Joshua Zirkzee.

Amorim told BBC about the early personnel change, “That is really simple when the game starts and finishes for people to address. The idea was different. It was a real tough moment for Josh [Zirkzee] and I felt that I had to do something in that moment.”

“I don’t like to do that to my players. In that moment the team was suffering and I made the decision thinking of the team. I am really sorry for Josh.”

“You can feel it [low confidence] every single day which is a bad thing but it is also a good thing because they are feeling. It is hard for them to cope with the losses on the pitch but we have to continue. There is no other way.”

Marcus Rashford was named on the bench after being excluded in the last four United matchday squads. Amorim said about the England international, “Every player on the bench is close to going on the pitch.”

United return to action on Sunday when they face table leaders Liverpool at Anfield.

Amorim reveals “tough” reason behind shocking decision he made in loss to Newcastle

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has revealed that the team was suffering and ultimately, that’s why he elected to substitute Joshua Zirkzee in the first half of the club’s 2-0 loss against Newcastle.

United slipped to a fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions at the hands of the Magpies.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton scored within the opening minutes to clinch all three points for their side at Old Trafford.

One of the controversial moments of the match was Zirkzee’s substitution before the break. The Dutchman started in a largely unfamiliar left 10 position and unsurprisingly, he struggled to have an impact on the match from that part of the pitch.

With United under the cost, Amorim wasted no time in looking to his bench and bringing on Kobbie Mainoo as a replacement for the former Bologna forward.

A visibly dejected Zirkzee grabbed a coat from the bench and ran straight back to the dressing room before re-emerging minutes later.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to Sky Sports and admitted being sympathetic to Zirkzee’s situation, but insisted the decision was motivated by a need to improve the team’s fortunes on the pitch.

Amorim told the news outlet, “Were my selections wrong? That is really easy to make that evaluation after the game has started. I have to do it before and I am the only guy who can do it before to try to understand how they play.”

“Josh [Zirkzee] is a player for Manchester United and we want more power sometimes in front. We are suffering always the first goal from set pieces so we picked more guys for set pieces.”

“We are trying to solve problems in the team but we have a lot of problems and sometimes you push one side, and the other side is open.”

The 39-year-old coach added, “You have to think about the team but also the player, but the player is suffering. I thought the team was suffering and we needed another midfielder to have more ball.”

“It was really tough for me to do that, but I’ve spoken to Josh as it was important to express the message. For the team, it was important for Josh to go out.”

“I know that Josh is a really good guy. When he went to the tunnel, I can understand that some guys can be in a bad way but he is a really good lad. It is life, and we will support Josh and continue. Newcastle were better than Manchester United, they weren’t better than Josh.”

Amorim was asked whether he will change anything about his tactical approach, in an effort to stop United’s losing streak. He responded, “I change something tactical in every game. You focus on the three defenders, you can focus on that. I change for every game and you can see it.”

“If I did not believe I would change because I am not stubborn. I believe in something and I really stick on that.”

Things don’t get any easier for United, whose next assignment is against Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton scored within the opening 20 minutes to pile further misery on Ruben Amorim and his players.

United have now lost five league games in a single calendar month for the first time since September 1962.

                  — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) December 30, 2024

The Red Devils had 53% possession in comparison to Newcastle’s 47% share of the ball. United managed just one shot on target from their total 10 cracks at goal. The visitors on the other hand, attempted a total of 12 shots, with four of these requiring Andre Onana to intervene.

United put together 575 passes with a pass accuracy of 86%. Eddie Howe’s men strung 509 passes with a slightly lower completion rate of 85%.

Several United players were well and truly below the standard but Kobbie Mainoo wasn’t one of them.

Mainoo started on the bench but came on as a first-half substitute for Joshua Zirkzee, who was struggling in the left 10 position.

When Mainoo was thrust into the action, United were firmly under the cosh but he helped restore some control in the middle of the park. He also brought about a lot more physicality and intensity that Christian Eriksen and Casemiro lacked.

During the time he was on the pitch, Mainoo touched the ball 60 times and found his teammates with 47 of the 49 passes he attempted, managing an individual pass accuracy of 96%. One of his passes was a key pass.

The England international successfully connected with two of the three long balls he tried to ping.

He created one big chance, for Casemiro, but the Brazilian dragged his shot wide. Mainoo won five of the 11 ground duels he delved into. He also came out on top in the one aerial challenge he contested.

The teenage midfielder put in an impressive five tackles.

                  (Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Maino can certainly hold his head high after that performance, even though it ultimately counted for very little.

It diesn’t get easier for United, whose next assignment is against Arne Slot’s high-flying Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Jamie Carragher hit out at Ruben Amorim over his team selection in Manchester United’s defeat to Newcastle on Monday, insisting three of the players in the starting XI “can’t run”.

United have now lost five of their last six Premier League games under Amorim, who’s won just seven points in his opening eight games at the helm.

The first half an hour of this 2-0 defeat to Newcastle was as bad as it’s been for United.

“You are watching the worst pound-for-pound football club in the country,” Gary Neville said at that point in the game. “They are that bad.”

“It’s worrying times for Manchester United and Amorim. He knew it was a big job but l think it is far bigger than he ever imagined.”

It was around that time that Joshua Zirkzee was hooked in favour of Kobbie Mainoo, with Amorim realising his baffling decision to play the Netherlands international to the left of central striker Rasmus Hojlund was a mistake.

Zirkzee was sarcastically cheered off the pitch, heading down the tunnel before going back to the bench.

“That is brutal,” Neville said on Zirkzee. “I’ve not seen that too many times at Old Trafford in the 43 years I’ve been coming here.”

Carragher had his say on Zirkzee after the game, questioning Amorim’s decision to start him as well as Casemiro and Cristian Eriksen at the base of midfield, as none of them have the required mobility to succeed in this system.

He said: “We have been speaking about Eriksen and Casemiro on this show 18 months ago. That’s on the manager.

“These players can’t run. We know that. That is on the manager putting these two players in that position and in that system. It is a major flaw.

“We knew tonight they would be on the front foot and I didn’t think they would take a backward step as why would you?

“United have been awful, and you just looked at the lack of mobility and athleticism in their team – not just in Eriksen and Casemiro.

“Zirkzee can’t run, he can’t move. I just couldn’t see anything other than Newcastle winning that game.”

Carragher also picked out Lisandro Martinez, whose defending Neville described as “horrific” on commentary, after the Argentinian was at fault for both Newcastle goals as he failed to defend crosses into the box

“Martinez has been awful,” Carragher claimed. “He has been caught out more in a back three than he was in a (back) four.”

Newcastle debacle proves Ratcliffe and INEOS have ruined United’s season and Amorim is paying the price – opinion

Manchester United inevitably fell to their fourth defeat in a row, losing at Old Trafford to Newcastle United 0-2 on Monday.

This was Ruben Amorim’s sixth defeat in 11 games since his arrival, and the hosts’ third consecutive home defeat, a feat which last occurred back in 1979.

The Red Devils remain 14th, only seven points off the relegation zone and with Liverpool in the Premier League and Arsenal in the FA Cup up next, it is difficult to see any reversal in fortunes anytime soon.

The Portuguese has kept a brave face throughout his difficult start and has vowed to keep playing his style despite the negative results.

INEOS have got it all wrong

But as INEOS showed with Dan Ashworth and Erik ten Hag, they will not care before pulling the plug if results do not improve and the club steers closer to the danger zone.

And it is because of the co-owners that the club are in this mess. They backed the Dutch manager even though the evidence was glaring that he should have been sacked despite the FA Cup triumph.

Instead, they not only kept him on but backed him with a budget in excess of €200 million with the club buying players to suit his transitional style.

And after the season went along expected lines, they did not hesitate to sack Ten Hag, only to panic and bring in a coach who employs the polar opposite style of play.

That has resulted in the ex-Sporting Lisbon manager having to play wingers alongside the striker, even though he prefers attacking midfielders in that role.

He has also been forced to play full-backs as wingbacks due to the inconsistent nature of the wingers at his disposal and it is clear to see that barring a miracle, this system will fail time and again.

Amorim having to pay for their mistakes

Owing to the club’s precarious PSR situation, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is on a cost-cutting spree, cannot afford to go all gung-ho in January and thus, a quick fix seems to be off the cards.

Amorim’s style definitely works, as seen with his exploits in Lisbon but for that to materialise, he needs backing and time, something INEOS are unlikely to afford him if results do not improve.

The coach needs to tweak his philosophy to a certain extent and play to this squad’s strength for a few games at least, to build up some confidence and to stave off the real threat of relegation.

Or at this rate, he might lose his job before the season is out because INEOS have shown that they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
