Man Utd: £60m Ten Hag signing ‘agrees to leave’ as Amorim struggles sees flop ‘favour’ January exit

Casemiro has ‘agreed to leave’ Manchester United and could move to Saudi Arabia in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils paid around £60million to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid in August 2022 and the Brazilian midfielder had a wonderful first season at Old Trafford.

He played a pivotal part in Man Utd finishing third in the Premier League, winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the final of the FA Cup.

As the wheels fell off under Erik ten Hag’s management, Casemiro was consistently being exposed in the middle of the park having appeared to age 20 years between the end of 2022/23 and beginning of 2023/24.

While Ten Hag’s tactics didn’t help the 32-year-old, it quickly became evident that he was past his best.

The summer signing of Manuel Ugarte and emergence of Kobbie Mainoo last term ensured that Casemiro went into 24/25 as a bench player, but he has started 10 of his side’s 19 Premier League matches.

With Ugarte and captain Bruno Fernandes suspended for Monday’s home clash against Newcastle United, Casemiro started in midfield with Christian Eriksen.

The pair were unsurprisingly overrun in the middle of the park by Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali.

Despite being used fairly often this season, Casemiro could be sold in January.

He is under contract until 2026 and as one of the club’s highest earners, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly very eager to sell and wanted to offload him in the summer transfer window.

Ratcliffe might get his wish in the winter window with clubs in Saudi Arabia believed to be keen.

Man Utd midfielder Casemiro now open to Cristiano Ronaldo reunion

According to reports in Brazil, Casemiro has ‘agreed to leave Man Utd’ and ‘Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund is determined to move forward’ with the signing in January.

There has been reluctance to move to the Middle East but the experienced midfielder now ‘looks favorably on a transfer at the start of 2025’ and ‘there would then be no major obstacles for the exit to happen’.

While there are ‘no major obstacles’, it is said that Saudi Arabia’s richest clubs all have enough foreign players in their squads and might need to sell before they can buy.

Casemiro is ‘well regarded’ in the Saudi Pro League, though, ‘especially at Al Nassr, also due to his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo’.

Ronaldo played with the Brazilian at Real Madrid and in his second spell at Man Utd.

Official: Wayne Rooney sacked by Plymouth Argyle as his managerial career goes from bad to worse

Championship club Plymouth Argyle and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney have confirmed they have “mutually agreed” to part ways with immediate effect.

Appointed in May, Rooney leaves Plymouth after just seven months in charge with the club four points from safety.

The former striker’s last game at the helm was on Sunday, as his side were beaten 2-0 by Oxford.

The result saw Rooney and his players booed by their fans and it appears this was the final straw for the hierarchy.

Rooney oversaw just four league wins and suffered 13 defeats in 23 Championship games after taking charge of the Pilgrims.

A statement by Argyle notes that Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland have also departed.

Rooney said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with.”

“Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future.”

“To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.”

He added, “I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support.”

“Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”

Under Rooney’s management, Plymouth have sunk to the bottom of the table, tied for the fewest goals scored in the second tier, and have conceded more goals than any other team across England’s top four divisions.

Man Utd man ‘reduced to tears’ against Newcastle as he ‘asks agents’ for January transfer

Man Utd forward Joshua Zirkzee was ‘reduced to tears’ in the tunnel as the Red Devils lost 2-0 to Newcastle on Monday night, according to reports.

Ruben Amorim’s side were beaten by the better side at Old Trafford as goals in the first half from Alexander Isak and Joelinton secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s outfit.

Man Utd have now lost four matches in a row in all competitions and remain in 14th position in the Premier League table and just seven points from the relegation zone.

Erik ten Hag and INEOS spent £36.5m on Zirkzee in the summer transfer window as he arrived from Serie A side Bologna as one of five new signings.

But the 23-year-old has largely been ineffective with four goals and two assists in 27 appearances in all competitions this season and Zirkzee was substituted after just 33 minutes against Newcastle.

Zirkzee was visibly upset and both beIN Sports and Sky Germany reported (via the Daily Mail) seeing Zirkzee with tears in his eyes in the tunnel after Man Utd fans cheered his substitution.

Man Utd boss Amorim insisted they will “support” Zirkzee and admitted the Netherlands international “is suffering” at the moment.

Amorim told Sky Sports: “I talked with Josh about that, because it’s important to express the message, but I’m always thinking about the team, and, in that moment, it was important for the team for Josh to go out.

“You have to think about the team and also, sometimes about the player, because the player is suffering. I was there a few years ago and I know that he wants [it], because I saw it during the week, and that’s the most important thing.

“He’s a really good lad, so you’ll have the support and you will prepare the next game.

“It’s some moments, and you have some examples like Harry Maguire, that have some tough moments, but that is life in every profession.

“So we will support Josh and continue because, like I said, Newcastle were a better team. Was not better than Josh, was better than Manchester United.’

And former Man Utd defender Gary Neville had some sympathy for Zirkzee too after the “brutal” reaction from the Red Devils fans.

Neville added: “I actually feel sorry for him, I really do.

“I know that he’s earning a lot of money here but there is a human being in there that’s basically being cheered off by his own fans and that is brutal.

“I’ve not seen that too many times at Old Trafford in the 43 years that I’ve been coming here.”

And now our friends at TEAMtalk claim that Man Utd forward Zirkzee ‘has asked his agents to find a destination in Italy (even temporarily) where the pressure is not too much’.

As well as interest from Juventus and AC Milan, the report reveals that his former club Bologna ‘have now made clear their willingness to welcome the player back on loan’.

“There is a feeling at the moment that…”: United star reveals dressing room’s true thoughts on club’s current woes

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has suggested that some of the team’s mistakes are being perceived as “a lot worse” than they truly are, following their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday evening.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton both scored in the first half to condemn United to a fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions.

United are currently in 14th place in the Premier League and just seven points above the drop zone.

In his post-match media obligations, Ruben Amorim insisted that United are at risk of being relegated unless results drastically improve.

Like most of his teammates, Eriksen was poor against the Magpies. He and Casemiro struggled with the intensity of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

After the final whistle, Eriksen spoke to MUTV [via Manchester Evening News] and remarked, “I think, in the end, it was a disappointing game. It was a game of moments.”

“We started well but then, in the end, conceding after a few minutes, it’s always tough at home.”

“There is a feeling at the moment that every mistake we make is feeling a lot worse than it actually is. We have to dig ourselves out of this.”

The Dane added, “Whether it is confidence or not, I think it is also, at the same, the belief on the pitch to be able to do what you are good at. It is a bit in between belief and confidence, I think.”

On what’s next for him and his teammates, Eriksen said, “It is very important [we stay together]. We are more or less halfway through the season; there is half a season to go and there are a lot of games with points to play for.”

“I am hopeful that we will turn around at some point, look back and think we were in this, but at some point we will be out of it, for sure.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they make their way to Anfield to face table leaders Liverpool.

Neville tells Man Utd to sign two players as a ‘starting point’ to kick start Amorim’s reign

Neville tells Man Utd to sign two players as a ‘starting point’ to kick start Amorim’s reign

Man Utd legend Gary Neville thinks the Red Devils need to sign two players as a minimum to help Ruben Amorim turn the tide.

The Red Devils lost their fourth match in a row in all competitions as Newcastle beat Man Utd 2-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night in the Premier League.

Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s men, which saw Man Utd remain in 14th position in the Premier League table, just seven points off the relegation zone.

Amorim has only won four of his first 11 matches in all competitions since replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford in November.

There was hope that a change in formation under Amorim would bring out the best in the current squad with the Portuguese head coach also trying to change the style and philosophy at Old Trafford.

And it has become clear that Amorim will need new players to impact results and performances dramatically with numerous players linked with January moves to Man Utd.

There was a report earlier today that there will be no money to spend in January unless Man Utd manage to sell come of their players and comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Neville reckons Man Utd need two key signings to improve Amorim’s side and secure some of the “fundamentals of this system”.

When asked what signings would help Amorim now, the Man Utd legend said on Sky Sports: “Definitely the positions that… look, you could say get a world class centre-forward, get [Alexander] Isak, but that’s never going to happen.

“I think if you were starting you have to start with the fundamentals of this system which is the wing-backs, they hold it together.

“If you don’t have the wing-backs functioning up and down, that are able to attack and defend equally as good – and there aren’t many of those around by the way because there aren’t many teams who play wing-backs – then you’re going to struggle.

“So you need two quite unique players in those wide areas and I think that’s the starting point.

“That’s nothing against [Noussair] Mazraoui and [Diogo] Dalot, they’re very willing and doing the best job that they can. But to me they’re the two areas [that need addressing] in this system.”

There was a positive Man Utd transfer story on Monday with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano seeing Milos Kerkez’s change of agent a positive step for the Red Devils in purchasing the Bournemouth left-back.

Romano wrote on X: ‘Bournemouth LB Milos Kerkez has signed with Fali Ramadani’s Lian Sports as new agency from 2025. He’s definitely one to watch, with Man United among top clubs monitoring his progress as reported.’

Ex-United boss receives surprise award in King’s new year’s honours list, will raise some eyebrows

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has been awarded an OBE.

Moyes has been appointed an OBE in the New Year Honours list for services to football. The Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) is handed to individuals who have done something special for their region or country.

Moyes has been feated for his contributions to football in the country.

He has managed a total of 697 Premier League games – a number only exceeded by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Moyes has overseen more than 1,100 matches across six clubs, including United.

Following Sir Alex’s retirement in 2013, Moyes was brought in as his replacement but his spell at Old Trafford was short-lived, as it only lasted 10 months.

The 61-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked by West Ham in May.

Reacting to being awarded an OBE, Moyes said [via BBC], “I don’t consider myself done yet but I am certainly enjoying some time off.”

“The one thing I won’t do is put any manager under pressure personally, because I don’t believe in it. I have not liked it when I have been in that position myself.”

“We are all getting a little bit older and I have to make sure I am doing the right thing for myself.”

He added, “Football is in my blood. It has been since I was a boy. I love watching football and I have enjoyed my career.”

“If there is another part to it, so be it. But I would only want it to be a good part. I wouldn’t want to be coming in and doing something which is very difficult.”

“I don’t want to be at the bottom of the league and fighting relegation which I have had a few times, so we will see how things go.”

“A graveyard for players”: United legend blasts Ineos’ role in ridiculous season to date

“A graveyard for players”: United legend blasts Ineos’ role in ridiculous season to date

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has torn into the Red Devils’ summer recruitment as they slipped to a fourth consecutive loss in all competitions.

United were dismantled by Newcastle United in a shocking first half performance as they fell to a 0-2 defeat at home to end the year on a particularly sour note.

Many fans expected much more as Ineos were judged to have a successful window where they brought in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte at great expense.

However, fast forward four months, and the Old Trafford faithful find their team in 14th place and only seven points above the drop zone.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville brutally took apart his former side’s transfer record.

“What am l surprised about is that when in the summer Manchester United signed those three or four players, I didn’t hear anyone say, ‘Manchester United have had a terrible transfer market’.”

Nonetheless, Neville did not hold back when commenting on their influence on the team so far.

“I am shocked about how poor those players have been in their early months. I have said it before that this club has been a graveyard for players who have come with decent reputations. And it is happening again.”

Whilst not singling a particular player out, he did claim that overall they have made the team worse than they were last season.

“The problem is that when you have seen them out here in a red shirt then Manchester United look a worse team. That’s the odd thing.”

The criticism seems harsh when Leny Yoro has barely played and Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte have been viewed by fans as positive signings and two of the few players who have matched the standards expected at Old Trafford this season.

It is true that Joshua Zirkzee appears very much a failed signing at the moment, compounded by being subbed off after only 33 minutes yesterday and the jury is still very much out on defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Nonetheless, while the situation is much more complex than only blaming the new signings, it is a valid point that United and former coach Erik ten Hag have once again wasted a huge sum of money to take the team backwards.

Neville claims ‘absolutely awful’ Man Utd are ‘worst pound-for-pound team in the country’

Man Utd are the “worst pound-for-pound team in the country” after their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday night, according to Gary Neville.

The Red Devils were well beaten on Monday night as goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton gave the Magpies all three points in a comfortable night for Eddie Howe’s side.

Defeat to Newcastle saw Man Utd remain in 14th position in the Premier League table but Ipswich Town’s win against Chelsea saw the Red Devils dragged to within seven points of the relegation zone.

And Neville described the performance against Newcastle as a “mauling” by the Geordies with Ruben Amorim’s side hammered.

As the first half progressed, Neville said on commentary: “Newcastle are hammering Manchester United. This is a mauling.”

On the botched team selection, the Man Utd legend added: “When you saw the Manchester United starting XI you had to think it would be very difficult for this team to play well.

“The two wing-backs aren’t very good in the attacking part of the pitch. The two central midfielders can’t run. The back three have no legs. [Joshua] Zirkzee has no balance off [Rasmus] Hojlund.

“You only really have Amad [Diallo] who you think might do something.”

On the superiority of Newcastle, Neville continued: “Newcastle are having the time of their lives out there. They should be three or four up.

“They have been absolutely awful. You are watching the worst pound-for-pound team in the country.

“[Diogo] Dalot is very willing and he gets up there but his options with the ability he has as a full-back are limited.

“I am looking at [Ruben] Amorim and he must be thinking, ‘what am l watching?’

“There are only three of them who can say they have been alright under Amorim: Dalot, [Noussair] Mazraoui and Amad.”

Neville on the Red Devils’ second half performance, he said: “I am surprised there weren’t changes at half-time. I thought there would be.

“The amount of changes Manchester United make to their back five in game and from game to game is incredible.

“It has been a struggle for Casemiro and it’s been a struggle for Martinez. Since [Kobbie] Mainoo’s introduction, it has been better for Manchester United.

“The first half-hour was embarrassing, as bad as you will see.”

United fans must not fall into this trap amidst Zirkzee controversy – opinion

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee suffered his lowest point as a football player when he was hauled off the pitch after just 33 minutes of action yesterday.

The Dutchman’s career at Old Trafford could not have got off to a better start as he came off the bench to score the winning goal versus Fulham way back in August.

Since, it has been an unmitigated disaster.

There was a brief glimpse of hope when he shone versus Everton at the start of the month and scored a brace but this has seemingly all gone up in flames once more.

Zirkzee was not the only poor performer yesterday but he lost the ball seven times and only made three out of nine passes before he was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo 12 minutes before the halftime break.

He was clearly distraught by the decision and went straight down the tunnel before emerging shortly after to rejoin his teammates on the bench.

The Old Trafford crowd, usually famed for its patience and loyalty, reached breaking point last night as they seemingly booed the Dutchman off the pitch.

The Daily Express report that “Joshua Zirkzee was brutally booed off by his own supporters after being substituted midway through the first half of Manchester United’s Monday night clash against Newcastle.”

“There were more boos, mixed with some applause from the Stretford End, when Zirkzee reached the mouth of the tunnel.”

Some fans will welcome the reaction of the crowd as standards have slipped so quickly at the club that few recognise who Manchester United are anymore.

Zirkzee was not the only poor performer in the half but it was clear that United did need extra midfield support. What’s more, part of the crowd’s reaction may also have been in support of local lad Kobbie Mainoo coming on and a recognition of Ruben Amorim’s proactivity to fix a glaring problem in the team.

However, English football culture is famed for its standards of not turning on its own players.

It is terrifying to think the reaction Real Madrid’s crowd would have for this bunch of players when you consider they booed a prime Cristiano Ronaldo.

They would argue that this is one of the reasons that standards are always so high at the club but it is incongruent with the way Old Trafford has always gone about its business.

Fans have to pay a hefty price to go see their team in action and deserve so much more than the rubbish they are being served up.

Nonetheless, it is etched into the culture of the club and dare it be said, country’s football culture that you do not turn on your own.

Zirkzee is probably not good enough and will likely be sold in the not too distant future. This is not his fault however and nobody doubts that he hasn’t given his best effort since joining the club.

Like any player who represents the badge, he must be supported until the day he leaves, so the club can try and piece itself together as a united front.

United are in a massive hole, one that could take much longer to get out of than fans care to admit. Clearly nobody has any obvious ideas how to rectify the situation just yet but one thing that will certainly not help is ripping each other to pieces as the outside world delights in United’s new lows on and off the pitch.

“Like mannequins”: Former United defender rips into pair after latest brutal performance

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has lambasted Christian Eriksen and Casemiro’s role in his former side’s latest defeat.

In the last game of 2024, the Red Devils were torn apart by Newcastle United in a first 30 minute spell that could have seen the Magpies score four or five.

It ended up only a 0-2 defeat but the Sky Sports pundit highlighted the role of two players who contributed in particular to the shocking performance.

With Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes both suspended, Ruben Amorim had few options at his disposal in the middle of the park.

The first half went so poorly that Amorim decided to bring on an extra midfielder in Kobbie Mainoo after just 33 minutes.

Speaking on Sky Sports (via GIVEMESPORT) Neville tore into Casemiro and Eriksen’s lack of influence in the game as they were routinely beaten by Newcastle’s energetic midfield three of Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali.

“Casemiro and Eriksen in midfield are like mannequins. Little one-two around them, it’s so easy.”

The two players were brought in to United by Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2022 and enjoyed a rather fruitful partnership in that first season but since then, it has only been downhill.

“They’ve been two fabulous players throughout their careers but the last thing either of them wants to see is the other next to them.”

“All you want around you is legs. They shouldn’t be playing a game together in the Premier League. They really shouldn’t.”

With both players rumoured to be leaving the club in January or the summer it is perhaps possible that Neville will get his wish and not see the two together at Old Trafford again.

Manuel Ugarte has impressed since Amorim took over and Mainoo showed his promise with a strong performance last night but it is clear that midfield signings are very much necessary for the team to progress.
