Yet another new era has started at Manchester United with head coach Ruben Amorim taking his first training session at the club on Monday.

Fans were interested in knowing whether the Portuguese would stick to his 3-4-3 system or tweak it due to taking over mid-season with quite a few players new to the style.

On first glance, it seemed that the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss was sticking to his guns and playing with three at the back and utilising wing-backs.

There were interesting positional changes for quite a few players but with all the international stars yet to return from national duty, quite a few academy gems were called up for training.

    Training updates

It was 16-year-old Godwill Kukonki who grabbed all the headlines with his presence in senior training but as The Manchester Evening News later revealed, he was not the only player in the same age bracket called up by Amorim.

Jim Thwaites was also part of the session and his progress within the academy has gone under the radar somewhat but coaches have tipped him to enjoy a great career.

“Manchester United youngster Jim Thwaites took part in first-team training on Monday, despite being aged just 16 years old. Thwaites is considered as one of the academy’s leading prospects in his age group,” the report outlined.

Despite being only 16, Thwaites is already a regular for the U18s, playing in all nine league games this term while scoring four and adding two assists.

    Thwaites’ rise

The midfielder is also something of a set-piece specialist and he even won the club’s Goal of the Season award for both the U16s and U18s last season.

The youngster has already played twice for the U21s and was even called up to first-team training by former boss Erik ten Hag earlier in the campaign.

Amorim is known to trust youth a lot more than the Dutchman and the academy stars must be on their toes to try and impress the new coach. Who knows, their chance might come sooner than expected.

As per MEN‘s report, the other academy stars to be involved in Amorim’s first session include — Jaydan Kamason, Jack Kingdon, Sam Murray, Finley McAllister, Ruben Curley, Malachi Sharpe, Louis Jackson, and Ethan Williams.

Man Utd: Ruben Amorim problems grow as ‘disappointed’ defender faces fresh injury setback

      man-utd:-ruben-amorim-problems-grow-as-‘disappointed’-defender-faces-fresh-injury-setback

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim’s list of problems at Old Trafford may have just got longer with injury concerns growing over the international break.

Amorim’s three at the back system, which he has utilised throughout his career, requires the use of an extra centre-back, though that maybe difficult to find at United.

The Reds have been injury riddled at the back this season, with left-back’s Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia just returning from injuries though the break has seen a few further setbacks.

Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof both picked up fresh injuries while away with Argentina and Sweden, while Harry Maguire has also been nursing an injury since early October after coming off at half-time in a goalless draw at Villa Park.

Lindelof returned from an injury last month, making seven appearances this season and his latest issue could come as a result of being rushed back.

Former United boss Erik ten Hag had come under scrutiny last season in regards to mismanaging his players’ workloads which saw their season decimated with injuries.

On Lindelof’s potential extended period of absence, Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson said: “I met him before he left the hotel. He was very disappointed. Now it’s about him getting healthy.”

Lindelof also missed large parts of last season with different injuries. When he was available however, he was shoehorned across the backline, in both full-back positions as United struggled for numbers in that department.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and it looks increasingly unlikely he will be given a new deal on fresh terms. He has been at the club since 2017 after he joined from Benfica under former boss Jose Mourinho. In the Portuguese capital, Lindelof had played with new boss Amorim.

For Martinez, United will be hoping he is fully fit after proving a vital piece of the puzzle since signing for the club. He is the only senior left-footed centre-back at United and such an importance in the modern game due to the passing angles open to him from that side of the pitch.

It shows a reason as to why United pursued Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite throughout the summer though.

It’s unsure whether the 22-year-old would have helped solve all defensive issues at Old Trafford however, with the England international having missed several games since the start of the season due to an ongoing groin issue.

Amorim ready to axe “disruptive” United star with ideal replacement already found – report

        amorim-ready-to-axe-“disruptive”-united-star-with-ideal-replacement-already-found-–-report

It appears that new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim may decide to cut Antony loose after identifying a promising young winger to replace the struggling Brazilian.

Since arriving at the club in 2022, Antony has struggled to impress at Man United, gradually falling down the pecking order under former manager Erik ten Hag.

This season, Antony has made just five appearances in all competitions, starting just one match, namely United’s 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. (Transfermarkt)

Given his lack of opportunities, it was reported that Antony would engage in discussions with the club over his lack of playing time.

However, there may be no need for such talks if a recent update is to be believed.

The Daily Star reported that United are open to letting Antony leave the club in January if any offers are received.

“Ten Hag questioned the £200,000-a-week star’s attitude in training, while United sources claim he has become a disruptive influence in and around the squad,” the article read.

In addition, Amorim is allegedly looking to Sporting’s Geovany Quenda as a replacement.

“United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to get Antony off the wage bill – and will sanction a move for Quenda next summer,” the report claimed.

As relayed by The Peoples Person, it appears that United are already plotting to secure Quenda’s signing at the end of the season.

Still, it appears that United may have other ways of offloading Antony should a deal for Quenda fail to be reached.

It was reported that United may swap Antony for Flamengo’s Lorran.

A loan-to-buy deal is also believed to be on the table, in which Antony could leave Old Trafford in January.

While United will surely struggle to recover their full £86 million investment on Antony, allowing the winger to leave the club may be their best option at this point, given his consistent underperformance and the need for a more reliable option with whom Amorim can build toward the future.

Amorim’s first training session uncovers impossible task but proves he is better than Arsenal legend

          amorim’s-first-training-session-uncovers-impossible-task-but-proves-he-is-better-than-arsenal-legend

Ruben Amorim has overseen his first Man Utd training session, instantly proving he might be better than Tony Adams. But not good enough to sell Antony.

Amorim was finally able to take training after his visa issues were sorted, although international duty meant he was without a number of players who might expect to start against Ipswich on Sunday.

That game will offer the first true look at what Amorimball might bring to Old Trafford, but until then the world will have to live off what few morsels a short clip of the training session had to offer, including a brief look at the actual giant called up from the academy to fill in.

Here are five things we officially definitely learned from Amorim’s first training session as Man Utd manager.

          1) It would not be a new manager’s first training session without the deployment of a player in a slightly different position. No action sums up the virtue of a fresh pair of eyes more than a coach coming in, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the squad they have inherited, and revising roles.

The alterations are always minor in the grand scheme of things, but supporters desperate to see The Vision will merrily latch onto them in lieu of actual developments.

Antony at wing-back was a possible change suggested around the time of Amorim’s first Old Trafford links, forced by two key factors: the coach’s preferred 3-4-3 formation; and the need to crowbar an £86m mistake into the team in any feasible way.

The loss of certain players to international duty made it inevitable that Antony would slot into a first-team training XI in some capacity, with the Brazilian surely warming the right wing-back seat for Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot or Literally Anyone Else.

Perhaps a seven-minute highlights clip from training could never have captured Antony’s generational brilliance in a new position, but it is interesting to note that while the session features players almost exclusively progressing the ball through forward passes and crosses, he attempts the only thing vaguely resembling skill or a dribble.

Antony at one stage encounters a dead-end which can only realistically be navigated by the use of a right foot, a problem he predictably solves by turning back, feigning a left-footed pass and then making that very same left-footed pass to poor Leny Yoro, whose surgically repaired knee might be grateful for a bit more support down that flank by the end of the week.

Good luck trying to ‘offload’ Antony in January, is the message here.

          2) There has never been a single association football player who has embodied the art of teacher’s pettery quite as gloriously as Mason Mount. His recent injury issues may have frustrated Erik ten Hag but the Dutchman would be the outlier among Mount’s previous coaches, all of whom have surely described him as some variation of “an absolute dream to work with”.

It is already possible to sense that sort of connection building between Amorim and “Mase”, who the Portuguese praises a couple of times during the session.

The assumption was that Mount and Harry Maguire were media insiders pushing the Gareth Southgate PR machine as the main beneficiaries of what would have been a hilariously insane yet frequently mooted appointment. The mistake was in forgetting that Mount is uniquely capable of morphing his skillset to match precisely what any given coach needs – which in big 2024 tends to just be ‘lots of running around’.

READ NEXTMason Mount out of excuses as Man Utd, England dreams come true

          3) Amorim gave more focus to the concept of a midfield in his first training session than Ten Hag in two years. Beyond his work with Mount, maybe the most fascinating insight into the future were the two moments Manchester United’s new manager chose to single out Kobbie Mainoo for personal enlightenment.

One masterclass of concentrated pointing implies that Amorim has been learning from the early coaching stylings of Jordan Henderson, with Mainoo absorbing clear instructions on how footwork, movement, body shape and posture can be used properly to open up multiple passing options.

In an earlier clip, Mainoo takes two touches to control and offload a simple Jonny Evans ball instead of making a one-touch pass to Casemiro. And in fairness the teenager might have developed an innate inability to properly trust his midfield partner over the past 12 months or so.

A later drill shows the first XI attacking and Mainoo clipping the ball over to Tyrell Malacia as Amorim applauds, possibly in shock at the mere presence of the left-back but maybe also because Mainoo has already acted on his advice.

The lesson we learned? That based on their respective brands of frenetic pointing which look remarkably deranged out of context, Amorim might already be better than Tony Adams.

          4) He is not, however, a man without foibles. Amorim is mortal and with that comes familiar defects: malice, acrimony, a strong sense of vengefulness. His hate can only be contained for so long without being properly channelled.

At one stage he initiates a defensive drill in which Evans has to bring down a high ball and offload it to a teammate, all with one touch. Amorim himself applies the pressure to the centre-half, a clear form of retribution for Evans equalising in a Champions League group game against his Braga side in October 2012.

Evans does not struggle to accomplish the task and Amorim is left to admit defeat to a man who will probably outlast both him and time itself at Old Trafford.

          5) Amorim had ‘his very own whistle’. Man Utd are back, baby. Although discontented players taking the mick out of that is definite Athletic long-read fodder when he is sacked in 18 months.

            amorim-‘to-axe’-man-utd-man-who’s-a-‘disruptive-influence’-as-target-‘replacement’-is-named

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has made the decision to offload ‘disruptive’ Antony in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag after a terrible start to the new Premier League season with the Dutchman leading them to just three wins in their opening nine matches.

Ruud van Nistelrooy put four more points on the board in the two Premier League matches since Ten Hag’s departure by beating Leicester City and drawing with Chelsea.

Man Utd moved quickly to bring in Ten Hag’s permanent successor in Amorim with the Portuguese coach arriving in Manchester last Monday after winning his final match as Sporting Lisbon manager 4-2 against Braga.

And there are already plenty of rumours about which players could arrive in the next couple of transfer windows as the Red Devils look to give Amorim some support.

There are some doubts as to whether Amorim has the right players to suit his 3-4-3 formation, which he preferred to play at Sporting, while there are serious questions about the current attackers at Man Utd.

Only Southampton, Crystal Palace and Everton have scored fewer goals than Man Utd in the Premier League this season and Antony is struggling to get into the team.

The Brazil international is yet to make a Premier League start this campaign after two disappointing seasons at Old Trafford, with Antony limited to just five appearances in all competitions this term.

And now the Daily Star claims that Man Utd ‘will listen to offers for Brazilian flop Antony in the January transfer window’ as Amorim plans ‘to axe’ the struggling winger.

New Man Utd boss Amorim already knows who he wants to replace Antony with as he looks to bring in Sporting Lisbon’s Geovany Quenda.

            The report adds:

‘And United boss Ruben Amorim has made Portuguese sensation Geovany Quenda his No.1 choice to replace Antony in what will be a new-look team at Old Trafford. United chiefs are keen to off-load Antony – and would be willing to sell him to the highest bidder – or loan him out elsewhere – in the middle of the season.’

Antony has not managed to settle in at Man Utd and the Daily Star claims he has “become a disruptive influence” in the squad.

            The report continues:

‘Ten Hag questioned the £200,000-a-week star’s attitude in training, while United sources claim he has become a disruptive influence in and around the squad.

Picture: Marcus Rashford’s 3 word assessment of Ruben Amorim’s first session at United

                picture:-marcus-rashford’s-3-word-assessment-of-ruben-amorim’s-first-session-at-united

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has taken charge of his first training session since taking over from Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The talented Portuguese coach has been settling into his new surroundings for the last week but finally took to the grass with the players who are not on international duty with their respective nations.

One of them is Marcus Rashford, who is yet to regain his place in the England side after a dip in form over the last 18 months.

As reported by The Mirror, Rashford gave his reaction to Amorim’s first session with a three word quote on his social media account.

“Top session today,” posted the 27 year old.

Rashford was part of 10 first team squad members that took part in the session, which was supported by several academy stars.

Kobbie Mainoo was part of the group, as were Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Lenny Yoro, who are also returning from injuries – all timely boosts for Amorim.

Rashford in particular is in desperate need of a shot in the arm with his alarming performance levels of late leaving his future at the club in doubt.

The United forward has struggled for any kind of form over the last year-and-a-half and will be hoping his new coach will get him back to his best.

United’s struggles in front of goal were a huge reason in the need for a change in dug out with the team’s profligacy seriously hampering Ten Hag’s progress.

No doubt Rashford possesses the quality to turn his poor form around but his body language and efforts on the pitch will have to improve dramatically to survive under Amorim.

With the new coach reportedly in no mood to waver from his tried and trusted 3-4-3 formation there is likely to be a change in role for Rashford.

However, the local lad has clearly been left impressed by early impressions of Amorim and will be desperate to get off to a good start against Ipswich Town at the weekend.

Given his qualities and time with the manager this week, it would be a surprise not to see Rashford in Amorim’s first XI on Sunday, it’s then over to the underperforming star to grasp the opportunity and mark the occasion with a strong performance to get the new regime up-and-running with a win.

Seven Man Utd stars face January exit under Amorim ‘with future budgets expected to be tight’

                  seven-man-utd-stars-face-january-exit-under-amorim-‘with-future-budgets-expected-to-be-tight’

Seven stars are at risk of being sold under new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.

Amorim was appointed on November 1 after the Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag earlier that week, while he had to wait until last Monday to begin work after taking charge of his last Sporting Lisbon match against Braga before the international break.

And now Amorim can get to work fixing Man Utd with the Red Devils currently 13th in the Premier League table after a disastrous start to the new season.

Ten Hag’s side won three of their first nine Premier League matches before interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy put another four points on the board in their last two fixtures.

Amorim, who took charge of his first training session this week, has his work cut out as he attempts to implement a new formation and decide which players he wants to keep at the club.

The Daily Mirror claims that seven of the Man Utd first-team squad are at risk of being sold under Amorim and, ‘with the January transfer window approaching rapidly on the horizon, he could be in line for some difficult decisions.’

Man Utd centre-back Harry Maguire is ‘among seven stars whose Manchester United careers could end’ under the Portuguese boss, while ‘Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are all out of contract next summer and could be set for exits’.

                  The report adds:

‘Other stars out of contract include former captain Harry Maguire. He was linked with West Ham last summer and could bid farewell after dropping down the pecking order – albeit the Red Devils holding an option to extend his deal by a further year.

‘United also have a similar arrangement with Amad Diallo. The Ivorian winger has managed to establish himself at Old Trafford this season and talks over a new deal are expected.

‘While Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia still have 18 months left on their respective deals, they still face scrutiny over their futures. The Brazilian has long been linked with a move away and the Red Devils could choose to cash in so they do not lose him for nothing.

‘Malacia is also out of contract in 2026. The Dutchman has only just returned to action following a lengthy injury layoff so any talks might be paused until he is fully fit.’

Half the investment of Bournemouth: The Athletic exposes the shameful neglect of United’s Glazer ownership

                    half-the-investment-of-bournemouth:-the-athletic-exposes-the-shameful-neglect-of-united’s-glazer-ownership

The Athletic have laid bare the pathetic investment the Glazer family have put into Manchester United over the years.

The arrival of Ineos as part-owners has given the club a new lease of life and whilst their ownership so far has not been perfect, it is decidedly better than what came before.

The Glazer family still own a significant chunk of the football club however and next year will mark an incredible 20 years since they completed a hostile takeover way back in 2005.

The American owners have frequently been vocally criticised for a lack of interest in the club’s success on the pitch with poor appointments at executive and sporting level.

In addition, they have also let the grand old stadium of Old Trafford rot and left Ineos to clean up the mess as they make plans for a brand-new 100,000 seater arena.

The Athletic have broken down the numbers of each Premier League club’s investment received from their owners and it does not make pretty reading for United fans.

The American outlet reports that “a leveraged buyout has been costly to United, with an original £800 million sale becoming a financial deadweight. Approximately £815 million has been paid in interest servicing the debt that came with the Glazer takeover.”

What’s more, not only have they saddled the club with debt but they also haven’t put any of their own money in despite siphoning off dividends for fun over the years.

“Ratcliffe’s arrival also brought an injection of £158 million, the first owner-funded investment at United since the 2012-13 season.”

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire explains that this investment from Ineos and the £249 million received when listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012 means that total owner funding over the years reaches £477 million.

However, when you consider the Glazers have taken £432 million in dividends during this time, it means when all is said and done, they have invested a paltry £45 million into the club in two decades.

This is infuriating in its own right but when you consider that rivals Manchester City have received £1.3 billion in funding, it puts the two club’s level of support from their owners into perspective.

It is also shocking to learn that United have received the least real funding from their owners in the entire league, with even Bournemouth enjoying £93 million of owner funding and newly promoted Ipswich Town £83 million.

Whilst Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company try to undo the mess the club is currently in, these figures are a timely reminder to who the real perpetrators are in United’s downfall.

100% dribbles, 72% passes: another international masterclass from United star desperate to convince Amorim

Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen put in a strong performance for his nation as they held on to a 0-0 draw with Serbia.

The stalemate was enough to secure second place in their Nations League Group A behind Spain and they will advance to the quarter finals of the competition.

The Danes had an almost equal share of the ball with 49% but created many less chances, only eight in comparison to the hosts’ 22, as they searched for the win they needed to qualify.

Eriksen has had a surprisingly good start to the season at United with four goals in all competitions, including a crucial strike away to Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Yesterday he was given a score of 7.3 for his night’s work and played the entire 90 minutes.

The 32 year old had 57 touches and completed 28 out of his 39 passes for a passing accuracy of 72%.

He only found the intended target with one of his six crosses and connected with three of his six long ball attempts.

Eriksen tried to force his way onto the scoresheet with an effort that was off target and also had a shot blocked as he tried in vain to open his nation’s account.

He did complete his one dribble attempt and won three out of his six ground duels.

In a combative display he also showed defensive solidity in a midfield three as he made three interceptions and a total of two tackles as his side kept a vital clean sheet.

There are numerous reports that Eriksen will have no future under Ruben Amorim as the new head coach will prioritise players with “intensity”.

The Dane has also confirmed he has had no contact from the club over a contract extension despite his current deal running out in the summer, so he seems to have some work to do to convince the club he has a place in their future plans.

Nonetheless, it is unlikely that Amorim will have fully made up his mind about any player until he sees them kick a ball in anger, so Eriksen will have hope he can continue to show his national team form for his club side and convince him he can continue to compete at a Premier League level.
