United fan favourite sold by Ten Hag achieves feat he failed to complete in his last three years at Old Trafford

Manchester United finally parted ways with Anthony Martial this summer with the Frenchman released from the club at the end of his contract.

The injury-prone forward’s time at Old Trafford was blighted by spells on the sideline which eventually led to United giving up on the talented but unreliable striker.

Martial has since signed for Greek side AEK Athens and has managed to already achieve a feat for his new side that he couldn’t during his last three years in Manchester.

As reported by SportBible, Martial has completed back-to-back 90 minutes for Athens as attempts to rebuild his club career.

The 28-year-old has played the full match against both Atromitos and Asteras Aktor on November 3 and November 9, respectively.

Both games ended in wins for Athens who currently sit top of the Super League with 21 points from their first 11 games.

Martial’s move to Greece was confirmed in September with the Greeks taking a £2.5 million-a-season gamble on the once-highly-rated star.

Since his arrival in Athens, Martial has scored once and registered one assist in five appearances across all competitions.

It was back in 2015 that United forked out north of £35 million to secure the services of Martial, who was tipped for a huge future after winning the highly-coveted Golden Boy award.

However, despite an unforgettable debut goal that secured a win against arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, things never quite worked out as planned for the player.

In truth, the fact that Martial’s debut strike is still largely remembered as his best moment in a United shirt arguably is the biggest indicator of how his time in Manchester played out.

Overall, the Frenchman made 317 appearances for United across all competitions, scoring 90 goals but failed to lift a Premier League title.

Martial will now be hoping to build on his decent start in Greece and salvage something from a career that promised a lot but to this point, has delivered very little.

Amorim identifies his top transfer “priority” after holding first Man United training session – report

      amorim-identifies-his-top-transfer-“priority”-after-holding-first-man-united-training-session-–-report

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly identified his top transfer priority after taking charge of his first training session at Carrington.

Amorim has officially taken charge of the team following Erik ten Hag’s sacking and is set to get his first taste of English football on Sunday when United travel to Portman Road to meet Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal as he becomes the latest man to try and get the 20-time English champions back to their former glory.

On Monday, United confirmed that Amorim led his first training session. A number of first-team stars participated including Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, Antony and Marcus Rashford.

Much of the talk since Amorim’s appointment has revolved around the tactics he’s likely to deploy at Old Trafford and from a training video the club posted, it seemed like United were set up in a 3-4-3.

Evans was flanked by Yoro to his right and Shaw to his left. Antony was the right-wing-back, with Malacia on the opposite flank. Casemiro and Mainoo occupied the deeper midfield positions. Mount, Rashford and Amad appeared to be in the forward roles.

UtdDistrict reports that Amorim wants the midfield department to be strengthened in the summer.

“Amorim recently took charge of his first training session at the club and has spent the past week assessing his new surroundings and getting to know the players in his new squad.”

“UtdDistrict understands that, following his initial evaluation of his United first-team squad, Amorim feels he needs new midfielders as a priority in the summer.”

“Although Amorim will not have access to funds or significant transfers in January, sources explain that Amorim believes he needs a new defensive midfielder and another body who can operate in one of the two No. 10 positions in his 3-4-3 formation.”

UtdDistrict add that while United currently have plenty of midfielders in their ranks, a number of them such as Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are likely to leave.

It’s believed that Amorim will be forced to operate with a restricted budget over the course of the next few transfer windows, after Ten Hag’s tenure, in which the Dutchman spent in excess of £600 million on recruitment.

This has left the Red Devils in a precarious position with regard to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. This situation may therefore hinder Amorim in his bid to bring in new midfielders that he feels suit his system.

Ipswich Town vs. United kicks off at 16:30 BST.

Amorim ‘asks’ for three signings at Man Utd as Ornstein reveals January window expectations

        amorim-‘asks’-for-three-signings-at-man-utd-as-ornstein-reveals-january-window-expectations

Journalist David Ornstein insists the “money just isn’t really there” to give new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim significant signings in January.

The Red Devils appointed Amorim on November 1 as Erik ten Hag’s successor with the Portuguese coach taking over last week before taking his first training session yesterday.

Amorim has a tough job on his hands with Man Utd currently 13th in the Premier League, after a terrible start to the season, and looking for a manager to finally end their run of over a decade without a league title.

There have been claims that Man Utd will have very little money to spend in the January transfer window as they are close to their financial fair play limits.

It has also been reported that the Red Devils could sign two players, while Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani has been linked with a loan move to avoid spending large sums on permanent deals.

When asked if Amorim needs a ‘war chest’ in the January transfer window, Ornstein replied on Sky Sports News: “I don’t think so. It’s never been a massive window for Manchester United or many Premier League clubs to spend. They normally focus on the summer.

“Manchester United have signed, over the last few years, on average about five players per summer and I suspect they’ll invest again when it comes to that window. But right now Manchester United are cutting it fine on financial fair play, profitability and sustainability, so the money just isn’t really there.

“They’ve made cut backs across the board, including an ambassadorial role for Sir Alex Ferguson, then they are even looking at the allocation of finances that they give to the Disabled Supporters Association. So when it comes to transfer spending, it doesn’t surprise me, Manchester United invested heavily, there are a lot of good players there who they can get improved performances out of.

“And Ruben Amorim is renowned for improving players and so he’ll try and work with those at his disposal. Maybe they can do a little bit in the market, maybe some players will have to leave, as I think Jeremy Cross points out.

“Maybe Antony could be on his way out of the club and that could free up some finances. But I think it will be a low key January at Old Trafford and Ruben Amorim, I think there is a very good chance, he will show through his coaching what he’s capable of and then I think they will build in time using the markets too.”

And reports in Spain claim ‘sources close to the club’ insist Amorim has ‘asked the board to sign three key players’ in the next transfer window, with the report naming Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen as the three stars on the Man Utd boss’ wishlist.

United’s hopes of fixing summer error dashed by Serie A giants as they refuse INEOS offer – report

Manchester United’s strikers have been very goal-shy this season with Rasmus Hojlund netting only twice while summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has fared even worse.

The Netherlands international scored on his debut against Fulham but that is as good as it got for the ex-Bologna ace as he has since missed a glut of glorious chances while only registering a couple of assists.

Former manager Erik ten Hag was supposedly not a huge fan of the 23-year-old while plenty of reports have already declared that Ruben Amorim wants the young forward gone.

There have been rumours of the Red Devils using the former Bayern Munich star as part of a swap deal to land a striker that Amorim wants.

Napoli say no to United swap deal request

It is no secret that the Portuguese tactician is a huge fan of Viktor Gyokeres but the Swede is not the only striker on the list with The Peoples Person recently relaying the club’s long-standing interest in Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has eight goals and four assists for the Turkish outfit in eight starts across all competitions and would be a great fit for Amorim’s system.

But as relayed by Eurosport, Napoli have no intention of agreeing to United’s swap deal requests and would prefer that any potential suitor pays the the 25-year-old’s full release clause which stands at €75 million.

The Naples outfit are not particularly interested in Zirkzee and are currently looking to strengthen at the back and thus, have already sent back United’s offer.

          Amorim’s huge Zirkzee challenge

As for Zirkzee, his bad luck shows no signs of abating and he was recently dropped from the Dutch national team as well and his confidence seems to be shot to bits.

It will be a huge challenge for Amorim to try and bring the best out of the Dutch star. He does not seem to fit in with what the former Sporting coach really wants.

United are still hopeful that the 39-year-old can unleash the full potential of both the club strikers, just like he did with Gyokeres in Lisbon.

As previously relayed, the Old Trafford side currently have no interest in moving Zirkzee on so soon after spending big to land him.

“He works you”: Former players give a glimpse of what United’s overpaid stars can expect from Amorim

            “he-works-you”:-former-players-give-a-glimpse-of-what-united’s-overpaid-stars-can-expect-from-amorim

Manchester United might be headed towards a golden era under Ruben Amorim if the opinions of former players about the club’s new manager are to be believed.

Speaking to The Athletic, Tiago Tomas was full of praise for Amorim, having worked with the Portuguese manager during their time together at Sporting CP.

“Sometimes, he would almost feel like a big brother. He had all the respect you should have for a coach, but you had a connection with him; you felt you could talk to him about anything,” Tomas observed. Just 17 years of age when he arrived at Sporting in 2020, Tomas’ talent was spotted by Amorim, who decided to hand the teenager the chance to feature in Sporting’s run to the 2020-21 Primeira Liga title, their first in 19 years.

“His relationship and how he connects with his players is what makes the biggest difference,” Tomas concluded. “When you have the trust of the coach, it gives you freedom — you’re not worried about having to perform. You have to perform, but he gives you a tranquillity and team spirit that I’d never felt before.”

Prior to arriving at Sporting, Amorim managed fellow Primeira Liga club SC Braga, a club with whom he achieved a hugely impressive 77% win rate.

Fransergio, a midfielder in Amorim’s Braga team, spoke of the care that Amorim exhibited for each of his players, truly aimed at safeguarding their wellbeing.

“He’s very calm, and he’s someone who sees everyone not only as professionals but also as human beings,” Fransergio explained. “He would often inquire about our families; he would check on how foreign players were adjusting to life in Portugal.”

Perhaps no other player is more familiar with Amorim’s recent successes than Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand. “Mister Amorim makes things very clear to the players. About his vision, about the game, about how he sees your character and how you can improve. He is very good at knowing how he can make his players better. How he needs to treat one player and another player differently,” Hjulmand explained.

One of United’s top transfer targets at present, star Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, also weighed in. “He always wants to make sure that everything is 100 per cent in preparation for each game. He always wants to make sure that we know what we have to do in each specific match. He also always knows what needs to be done tactically, both offensively and defensively,” the Swedish striker explained.

“He works you,” remarked Marcus Edwards, who enjoyed a successful tenure under Amorim at Sporting. “He makes you want to be the best version of yourself. He’s constantly chatting to me in training, getting me used to the system and the way the team plays.”

Still, even with his high work rate and strict work ethic, Amorim comes across as a composed manager who manages to keep a cool head under pressure.

“He’s not a coach who is always screaming,” Tomas explained. “He’ll make some changes and corrections, but with him all the players know exactly what to do in every phase of the game.”

Former Braga player Xadas supported this claim, declaring: “He gives instructions and ideas about the game, but he also gives freedom to the player’s talent. When you go on the field with him, you know everything you have to do at every moment of the game.”

“He remains calm,” Bruno Simao, who played under Amorim at Casa Pia, remarked. “You get angry, but you don’t pass this to the players. If a player misses passes, he will shout at him, but they know how he is. He shouts because he’s angry, but not with them. It’s to push the players to their best.”

The excitement around Amorim’s arrival in Manchester is at its peak, with the Portuguese manager completing his first training session at Carrington.

While it remains to be seen how smoothly he will adjust to life at Old Trafford, it’s clear that Amorim is a confident, capable, and organised manager, with a slew of players laying on praise to their former mentor.

Although the future is unknown, the enthusiasm surrounding Amorim’s debut match against Ipswich Town on Sunday certainly appears to be warranted.

Man Utd star ‘impressing’ behind the scenes deemed an ‘excellent fit’ for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United fans have been waiting to be excited all season, and just as a new manager comes along, they may have more than one reason to be.

After Ruben Amorim took his first training session as head coach earlier this week, fans noticed summer signing Leny Yoro has also been involved as a right centre-back.

Amorim’s system includes the use of three central defenders, and Yoro will certainly be excited to lineup alongside Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

The young Frenchman is yet to play competitively for the club due to an ankle injury he picked up in pre-season, but Give Me Sport have claimed Yoro’s attitude towards returning back to full fitness after such an early setback has ‘impressed’ staff across their Carrington training base.

Key figures working behind the scenes also believe Yoro’s extended period on the sidelines could work out as a blessing in disguise, allowing him further period of time to get to grips with life in England and at United, where the stakes are so high and players are heavily scrutinised when things go wrong.

The former Lille defender was also of interest to Champions League winners Real Madrid, though the Spanish giants failed to cough up the fee that the French club were demanding. In an interview with MUTV after signing for the club, the 19-year-old confirmed he has struck up a good relationship with United club legend and former centre-back Rio Ferdinand, who had convinced him to go to Old Trafford.

Sources have also been informed that Yoro is seen as an ‘excellent fit’ for Amorim’s three at the back system, which begs the question whether United had lined up the Portuguese boss in the summer when securing the signature of Yoro. Manuel Ugarte was also one that raised question marks when signed, though he is a player who had previously played under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon.

Yoro has privately eyed up United’s trip to Arsenal on December 4 as a game in which he wants to play in, but he is set to be given minutes before that as United return to Premier League action at the weekend, with the Europa League returning next week. The defender has been pictured on the grass for a while now.

United fans will be relieved with the news with their season starting so poorly thanks to a mixture of bad decisions from former boss Erik ten Hag, and a number of absentees due to injury.

Amorim’s first training session did see the return of Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount however.

Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp wanted to ‘replace Salah’ with Man Utd flop amid contract issues

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign Man Utd flop Antony to replace Mohamed Salah when it looked likely the Egyptian wouldn’t sign a new contract at Anfield, according to reports.

The Egypt international has been in good form once again this season with Salah contributing ten goals and ten assists in 16 matches in all competitions.

Salah, along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is out of contract at the end of the current season with no concrete signs that he will stay or go.

Liverpool are reluctant to offer long-term deals to players in their 30s but the 32-year-old will feel like he deserves a lucrative contract because of his continued brilliant form in a Reds shirt.

After scoring the winning goal as Liverpool came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 on November 2, Salah hinted that his future at Anfield remains uncertain in a cryptic message on social media.

Salah wrote: “Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only 1 champion in the end. That’s what we want.

“Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”

There was a time a couple of years ago when Salah’s future was also uncertain with his agent Ramy Abbas Issa driving a hard bargain before the Liverpool forward signed a three-year deal.

And The Times journalist Paul Joyce claims Klopp was considering an offer for Man Utd flop Antony – who played for Ajax at the time – to replace Salah.

                  Joyce wrote:

‘There were times during that previous round of negotiations with Salah and Abbas two summers ago when a resolution also seemed unlikely.

‘It is understood that it was Mike Gordon, Fenway Sports Group’s president and responsible for the day to day running of the club back then, who ultimately decided renewing was the sensible use of resources. That has proved astute, especially as one of the options understood to have been discussed by Jürgen Klopp was to replace Salah was Antony.’

Liverpool swerved a bullet and former Reds midfielder Joe Cole recently claimed that Man Utd winger Antony – who hasn’t started a league match this season – will always struggle with the physicality of the Premier League.

Cole told Paddy Power: “The problem with Antony at Manchester United where I think he’s a player that is perfect for the Dutch league. I think the physicality of the Premier League is something he struggles with.

“He’s a talented footballer with great technique and skill, and it was good to see him playing well against Barnsley, but I don’t see him making an impact in the United starting team this season and I can’t see him turning it around at Manchester United.

“With Antony, I think he’s playing for a move away from the club and I think United will move past him. He’s not an old player and he should be coming into his prime in the next few years, so I think he’s probably best suited to other leagues.”

The noise around Manchester United forward Amad Diallo is deafening in his native Ivory Coast, where former players are clamouring for United’s own “Bukayo Saka” to be given a new contract.

Amad has scored three goals and assisted twice in his best season so far with the Red Devils, where he has looked sharp almost every time he has been on the pitch.

The 22-year-old’s contract expires in 2025 with the option for another year, and 79-time Ivory Coast international Emmanuel Eboué sees a new deal for the youngster as “a no-brainer”.

Speaking to AfricaFoot, Eboué said: “I think it’s a no-brainer that Man United give him a new contract.

“Every time he’s been given a chance, he’s always shown his goal. I think it’ll be even better with Ruben Amorim.”

Fellow Les Éléphants alumnus Seydou Doumbia also raved about the possibilities for Amad under the new manager.

“I love the way he receives the ball, his calmness, his awareness of his surroundings and of course the big goals and chances he creates,” he said.

“He can be the Bukayo Saka to Ruben Amorim. He is a nightmare for defenders with the ball at his feet.”

The former AS Roma and Newcastle United striker continued his wild praise for his young countryman, claiming “I think he will be one of the best players in Manchester United’s history, if they give him the chance.”

Chances have been strangely hard to come by for Amad, who was crowned Manchester United’s player of the month for August, before immediately being benched by Erik ten Hag.

But perseverance paid off, and his inclusion in starting lineups is no longer a surprise.

The player’s development under Amorim will be fascinating, as he has shown immense attacking threat across the frontline but also glimpses of steel when tracking back.

Eboué, who spent seven years at Arsenal, said: “It’s so good to see a player from my home country stepping up and deciding games for a club of Manchester United’s stature.”

Amad did just that against PAOK in the Europa League, scoring both goals in a 2-0 triumph at Old Trafford including a phenomenal second where he won the ball back and curled one in from outside the box.

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim officially started work on Monday as he conducted his first training session at Carrington.

Ever since the Portuguese’s name was announced, fans have been intrigued to know about what sort of a system he will use at the club.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss has been a huge advocate of the 3-4-3 system, something Old Trafford is not used to and despite the unfamiliarity, the first training session did show that the new coach is certainly sticking to his guns.

Due to the lack of numbers owing to stars still being away on international duty, quite a few young faces from the academy were called up and these were the major things noticed in Amorim’s first training session.

Injured stars back just in time

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have not played a single first team game all season and it was great to see the duo involved finally.

The England international had missed over 30 games last term while the Dutch star was sidelined for the whole campaign. Kobbie Mainoo is another important star who has been missing for two months now. But he was also seen in training

Leny Yoro, who suffered a pre-season injury and is yet to make his debut for the club, was also present and hopefully, he can finally make his first-team bow at Portman Road.

                      Three at the back

There were doubts as to whether the 39-year-old would find enough senior options at his disposal due to the injuries. Harry Maguire remains sidelined while both Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez picked up knocks on international duty.

However, Amorim played Jonny Evans in the heart of the backline with Yoro on the right and Shaw on the left. Amorim will remember Evans, who scored for the Red Devils in their 3-2 come-from-behind win against Braga back in 2012.

Amorim was a player back then while the great Sir Alex Ferguson masterminded yet another famous European night at the Theatre of Dreams.

                      Surprise at wing-back

Malacia was utilised as the left wing-back but the opposite flank threw up a major surprise. With Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui still with their national teams, Amorim chose to play Antony in that role.

The Brazilian has been one of the worst buys for the club and rumours continue to swirl over a January exit for the Erik ten Hag recruit. But maybe if the 24-year-old can impress at wing-back, he could still earn a stay of execution at the club.

                      Rashford up top

Marcus Rashford has cut a largely frustrated figure in the last one-and-a-half seasons at the club and Amorim must find a way to help him get back to his best.

And No 9 is where Amorim thinks the Mancunian can be most effective in. The England international has always preferred the left flank but has to give it his all in the new role if he is to stay at his boyhood club for the foreseeable future.

                      Mainoo receives special attention

The England international has been sorely missed in the middle of the park. And Amorim seemed to already know about the United academy graduate’s talents and was seen explaining to the 18-year-old about the positioning he wants in his new tactical style.

Ten Hag was also often spotted talking to Mainoo during his tenure and it is already clear to see that if fit, Mainoo will certainly start in Amorim’s system

                      Tracking back

One constant complaint since Ten Hag had shifted to a chaotic style of play was the lack of energy showed by the team after losing the ball.

The pressing was often haphazard and even the big-name players often did not burst a gut to get back, something that the Red Devils simply cannot afford if they are to turn their fortunes around.

And Amorim seems to have picked up on that and from his first session, he was seen trying to correct this fatal flaw.

The Portuguese coach was often seen whistling and urging his players back, as they practiced the scenario should the team lose the ball. And four times the players responded, running back in unison. Hopefully now, that will translate in the games to come.
