Ruben Amorim ‘has very own whistle’ as he calls time on Antony

    ruben-amorim-‘has-very-own-whistle’-as-he-calls-time-on-antony

Ruben Amorim has been taking Man Utd training and he has a big red coat and ‘his very own whistle’. But the big olds is that Antony is for sale.

    Exclusively yours…
The second week of the international break can seriously reduce grown men to tears, and other supposedly grown men to cast about for a back-page story that they can trumpet as an ‘exclusive’.

So here’s Jeremy Cross, a Goliath bestriding the back pages of both the Daily Star and the Daily Mirror.

And he writes – exclusively remember – in the Daily Mirror: ‘MANCHESTER UNITED will offload flop Antony in the January transfer window.’

Well they can’t unless anybody wants to buy him, Jeremy. And we’re telling you now that no f***er wants to buy him.

The best Manchester United can possibly hope is that a club in Turkey or Greece or Saudi Arabia wants to take him on loan while United continue to pay roughly 87% of his wages.

But of more interest to Mediawatch is the idea that this is an ‘exclusive’; after all, this is from October 29 on the talkSPORT website:

Manchester United will cut their losses on £86million flop Antony following Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

talkSPORT understands Antony has already been told he can leave Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens in January after failing to justify becoming the second-most expensive player in United’s history.

Three weeks later it’s a Mirror and Star back-page exclusive as the international break bites. But maybe the ‘exclusive’ part of the story comes next…

And United boss Ruben Amorim has made Portuguese sensation Geovany Quenda his No.1 choice to replace him.

    Is that exclusive? God no.

But congratulations Jeremy Cross for you combined two old stories to create an ‘exclusive’ that ‘Manchester United will offload’ a player who nobody wants to sign. And we all move one day closer to the return of Premier League football.

    Whistle-stop tour
Much has been made of Ruben Amorim’s first hands-on training session at Manchester United – in which he played Antony as a wing-back of all things – with The Sun going big:

RUBEN AMORIM’S debut training session lifted the lid on his amazing plans to restore Manchester United to the top of English football.

Well it lifts the lid on which 10 senior outfield players he had available, anyway. We do think any ‘amazing plans to restore Manchester United to the top of English football’ might have to play second fiddle to any plans to lift United out of the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Among the absolute gems from those ‘amazing plans’ are that Amorim ‘wore a bright red coat’ and ‘his bright red coat was hard to miss as he shouted words of encouragement from beginning to end’. What a man.

But this is by far our favourite observation from this or any other attempt to glean information from the training session:

Amorim made sure he commanded attention with his very own whistle.

His ‘very own whistle’? Is he 12?

So, so many questions: Is it his (very) own? Did he bring it from Lisbon? Is it club-issue? Was it Ten Hag’s, or did they spring for a new one?

Mediawatch is largely disappointed that the whistle did not match his ‘bright red coat’. Now that would have been an amazing plan…

    Can you dig it?
That training session – and presumably whistle – went down a treat with Marcus Rashford, who posted on social media that it was a ‘top session today’.

That was of course a ‘three-word verdict’ (Mail and Mirror) or ‘one word to describe Man Utd training’ (Star).

Or, if you are absolutely shameless and you work for Football Insider: ‘Man United ace Marcus Rashford aims three-word dig at Erik ten Hag.’

Poor Erik. If being sacked by Manchester United wasn’t enough, he then has to suffer the indignity of one of his ex-players hailing a ‘top session today’. Will the cruelty never end?

    Pasta his best
And the biggest story in football this snowy Tuesday morning according to MailOnline:

Happy to be back, Erik? Ten Hag returns to his favourite Manchester restaurant just three weeks after his brutal sacking – on the day his successor Ruben Amorim takes training for the first time

‘Just’ three weeks? Should he have waited longer before he cleared out his Cheshire home? What’s the optimum timescale?

But it’s the headline on the MailOnline football homepage that has piqued Mediawatch interest: ‘ERIK’S EMOTIONAL RETURN’.

Just how good is the pasta?

Manchester United u21s met Altrincham on Tuesday night in the National League Cup having opened the competition with a win over Forest Green Rovers last month.

Despite being a young side against senior opposition, United looked in control from the off and took the lead in just the 16th minute.

In a devastating counter attack, Jack Moorhouse picked up the ball deep in United’s half before charging upfield, dodging a number of challenges on the way to lay off the ball for Ethan Ennis to curl into the far corner.

Altrincham looked for a response with Tylor Golden afforded space to drive inside from the left back position, curling a shot toward the bottom right corner which required a big save from Dermot Mee to keep out of the goal.

Louis Jackson then had a mishap with a turnover at the back but United were quick to get behind the ball with Jack Kingdon’s block conceding a corner.

From the resulting corner, United countered at blistering speed down the right wing with Harry Amass, who crossed low across the box to Amir Ibragimov to shoot. But his attempt was blocked before Ennis picked up the ball for a near carbon copy finish into the top right corner.

Just before the break, Ennis cut in from the left wing again looking for his hat-trick but he scuffed his effort into the ground for an easy collection for the keeper, leaving the score 0-2 at the half.

Substitutions at the break for Altrincham took the pace out of the game but United remained on top throughout the second half.

In the 70th minute, the Red Devils won possession high up the pitch, with Ibragimov laying off to Musa whose shot was deflected up in the air and tipped onto the bar by the keeper. But Ibragimov was the only one following in for the rebound for an easy finish to make it 0-3.

Ennis sealed his hat-trick and the three points in the 90th minute when he was played through by Ashton Missin to expertly scoop the ball over the outrushing keeper.

The win puts United on top of the group after two matches, with two to come against Rochdale and Oldham.

United Women star receives apology from commentator after recent wild remark – report

        united-women-star-receives-apology-from-commentator-after-recent-wild-remark-–-report

Manchester United star Ella Toone has reportedly received an apology from the commentator who made a wild remark following her substitution in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal earlier this month.

Toone was named in United’s starting XI by Marc Skinner but was unable to be as impactful as she usually is.

At the 61st-minute mark, Skinner elected to take her off and bring on Melvine Malard to try and restore parity.

As she sat on the bench, disappointment was etched all over Toone’s face. She was caught by the cameras looking a tad bit grumpy and one of the commentators who was covering the game remarked that the United star “had a face like a smacked bum.”

At the time, The Daily Mail revealed that the unnamed male was under investigation by officials of the Women’s Super League, who took a dim view of his comments.

The comment was made on the world feed, an international alternative feed to BBC’s own dedicated liver coverage.

It was quickly snapped up by supporters, who posted the incident on social media.

The Mail have now given an update and indicated that all has been resolved after the commentator issued an apology both to Toone and United.

“It can now be revealed that bosses at the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL), as well as the commentator, have apologised to both Toone and United.”

“Sources spoke glowingly of WPLL CEO Nikki Doucet for her urgency in addressing the matter and ensuring there was a smooth process in rectifying, particularly with the matter gaining further scrutiny when highlighted by Ian Wright and former England captain Steph Houghton on their ‘Crossways’ podcast.”

Toone is currently out of action after picking up an injury before United’s win over Leicester City on Sunday.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Lionesses star could be sidelined until the new year as she deals with the calf issue.

Former United boss has “given the green light” for a January reunion with in-form Ten Hag recruit – report

          former-united-boss-has-“given-the-green-light”-for-a-january-reunion-with-in-form-ten-hag-recruit-–-report

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has enjoyed a fine personal campaign, seeing a major rise in minutes and emerging as the club’s joint second-top scorer.

Last season, after receiving only 14 starts across all competitions, the Dane went up to then-manager Erik ten Hag to make his dissatisfaction known.

And the Dutchman had leaned heavily on him again this term, with the 32-year-old starting nine times already, while netting four times and also registering three assists.

However, with the former Ajax coach no longer at the helm, Ruben Amorim wants intensity from his players and the Denmark international does not have the legs to consistently run the midfield any more in the Portuguese coach’s system.

          Eriksen’s future

The former Tottenham Hotspur star’s contract ends in 2025 and there are plans to move him on in January itself, thereby recouping a small fee in the process while also saving on the midfielder’s wages of 150,000 per week (as per capology).

A number of clubs want the classy midfield operator, including Real Betis, his former outfit Ajax, Anderlecht as well as Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

And as revealed by Turkish outlet STAR, Fener are in the lead with former United boss Jose Mourinho giving the green light for the transfer.

“For Christian Eriksen, Real Betis from LaLiga, Ajax from the Eredivisie and Anderlecht from the Belgian Pro League have entered the picture.

“While it was said that Ajax was ahead of other teams in the transfer market, a surprising development came for the Super League giants.

          Fener want Eriksen

“Christian Eriksen is also on the agenda of the Super League teams Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. It has been stated that the yellow-navy team is close to adding the player to its squad.

“It has been claimed that Christian Eriksen, whose transfer was reportedly given the green light by Jose Mourinho, will come to Turkey in January and sign for Fenerbahçe.”

Mourinho had briefly worked with Eriksen during his time in North London and the Portuguese manager wants the Dane to come to Istanbul and the Turkish league would certainly suit Eriksen, whose passing remains as top-notch as ever.

Whether the Turkish side will pay any fee to the Red Devils is not made clear in the report. The Danish star has a market value of €8 million but since the Old Trafford side had signed him on a free, they might not ask for too much.

Amorim deals blow to Man City as ‘sexy priority’ target chooses Man Utd for one reason in ‘major coup’

            amorim-deals-blow-to-man-city-as-‘sexy-priority’-target-chooses-man-utd-for-one-reason-in-‘major-coup’

According to reports, Manchester City ‘priority’ target Ousmane Diomande has decided that he would prefer a move to arch-rivals Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim has been appointed to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd after the Dutchman was sacked following last month’s disappointing 2-1 loss against West Ham.

Following his arrival at Old Trafford, Amorim promised he wouldn’t sign any players from his former club Sporting Lisbon during the upcoming winter transfer window.

Amorim said: “I won’t be signing [Sporting players] in January, that’s what I said.”

Despite this, Amorim is more open to the prospect of signing Sporting Lisbon players in the summer.

“I don’t know about the summer. The main thing is to hold on until the summer [laughs]. After that, we’ll see, Sporting’s players are very good players. I don’t know. We’ll see.”

This has not prevented Man Utd from being linked with Sporting Lisbon players in recent weeks and Diomande is reportedly on their radar.

The 20-year-old has been linked with several Premier League clubs in recent months as he’s one of the best young centre-backs in Europe.

READ: Five things we definitely learned from Ruben Amorim’s first Manchester United training session

Earlier this month, a report claimed Amorim is ‘determined’ to reunite with Diomande at Man Utd as the Premier League giants look to pull off a ‘major coup’.

A fresh report from Belgian journalist Sascha Tavolieri claims Amorim ‘should be careful not to be overtaken’ in the race to sign Diomande by Man City, who have made him their ‘priority’ target.

However, Diomande is said to be leaning towards a move to Man Utd as he ‘knows’ a reunion with Amorim would be ‘beneficial for his development’.

            The report explains.

‘Already on Manchester City’s radar when he was playing at FC Midtjylland, the Skyblues have targeted Diomandé as a priority.’

‘Hugo Vian has already prepared his plan of attack in order to convince the president of Sporting Lisbon, Frederico Varandas.

‘If Ruben Amorim has promised that Manchester United will not recruit any of his former players in January, the Portuguese technician should still be careful not to be overtaken in the race for the sexiest central defender of the moment…

‘That being said, the Red Devils do not want to fall behind and Diomandé has already spoken with Amorim. Joining a coach who made him so strong would be beneficial to his development, and Diomandé knows it, as Portuguese sources have confirmed to us.

‘The player’s will is tending towards the red… but will City put forward strong arguments in advance in January to reverse the situation?’

United fan group warns Ratcliffe and Glazers against radical plan to finance Old Trafford redevelopment

              united-fan-group-warns-ratcliffe-and-glazers-against-radical-plan-to-finance-old-trafford-redevelopment

The Manchester United Supporters Trust have informed Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the owners to use their own money for the redevelopment of Old Trafford, amidst fears that season ticket prices could be hiked.

United are currently considering their options regarding what to do with Old Trafford.

It’s understood that the two main options on the table are either the refurbishment of the current grounds or the construction of a brand-new stadium. At the moment, the latter appears to be likelier but a final decision is expected to be communicated to fans next summer.

A new state-of-the-art arena could cost United up to £2billion and there has been confusion over how the club will raise funds for such an ambitious project, with public funding for the stadium having already been ruled out.

According to The Daily Mail, there are fears that the Red Devils could increase season-ticket prices to help cover the cost of the new Old Trafford.

Over the past two campaigns, United have increased season ticket prices after maintaining a freeze on them for 11 years.

Now, the Manchester United Supporters Trust have warned against such a move, insisting that other alternatives should be pursued.

A spokesperson of the fan group told The Mail, “Everyone agrees Old Trafford needs updating but the big question is how that is funded.”

“Other clubs have funded stadium work through debt, but due to the existing huge debt burden the Glazers have placed on United, that option is not open to us.”

“This is an investment project so should be funded by capital, not ticket prices. We believe the owners should either invest themselves or issue new shares to allow others – including fans – to invest to make this happen.”

“Stadium improvements should not be funded by big ticket increases on ordinary match-going reds.”

United return to action on Sunday when they make their way to Portman Road to face newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

United embroiled in bitter legal spat with disgruntled agent over transfer of former defender – report

                  united-embroiled-in-bitter-legal-spat-with-disgruntled-agent-over-transfer-of-former-defender-–-report

Manchester United are reportedly entangled in a legal dispute with an agent over unpaid fees relating to Axel Tuanzebe’s loan move to Stoke City in January 2023.

Tuanzebe permanently left United in the summer of the same year, following the expiration of his contract. A few months later, he signed for Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town and played a key role for them on their way to Premier League promotion.

The defender joined United’s academy at the age of eight and captained the club at every level. During his time at Old Trafford, Tuanzebe managed 37 senior appearances between 2017 and 2021.

Unfortunately for him, consistently occurring injuries prevented him from nailing down a consistent run of performances and results.

He had loan stints at Aston Villa, Napoli and Stoke City.

According to The Daily Mail, an agent is claiming United owe him money for playing a part in Tuanzebe’s temporary switch to the Championship with Stoke.

“Confidential has learned that United have received legal letters demanding payment from an FA-licensed intermediary claiming to have helped broker Tuanzebe’s loan move from Old Trafford to Stoke City in January 2023.”

“United are refusing to pay and consider the claims baseless. The agent is understood to have reported the matter to the FA citing an alleged breach of their Football Agent Regulations.”

It’s understood that the agent claims he was given assurances by United’s Director of Football Negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, and former Football Director, John Murtough, that his dues would be settled.

However, after conducting investigations, the Red Devils have not found any evidence that the agent was involved in Tuanzebe’s move to Stoke. There is no email trail and United insist that no agreement was struck with the agent regarding the matter. The agent has also failed to provide any evidence supporting his claim.

It’s believed that United “are comfortable” with their conduct throughout the transaction that took Tuanzebe to the Bet365 Stadium.

The Mail explain that it’s not unusual for agents who may have played a minimal role in transfer negotiations to try and insert themselves into deals in an effort to get a huge payday.

The newspaper further states that a different agent claimed they were owed money for helping to get Eric Bailly’s move to Besiktas over the line, but this has already been resolved and Ruben Amorim’s side have not had to make a payment.

United are back in action on Sunday when they take on Tuanzebe’s Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Sunday.

Mason Mount set for key role under Ruben Amorim as Man Utd, England dreams come true

                    mason-mount-set-for-key-role-under-ruben-amorim-as-man-utd,-england-dreams-come-true

Cited as one of two players – along with Rasmus Hojlund – by the Manchester United hierarchy as an example of the untapped potential that grants the club space to end the damaging and costly cycle of mass overhauls, Mason Mount has everything to prove having done nothing of note since his £55m move from Chelsea.

He’s started just two games for United in an injury-hit start to his second campaign after an injury-hit first. But things could not have gone better for Mount off the pitch this season.

The manager who had no plan for him has been sacked and replaced by someone whose formation matches that of the manager under whom he took his game to another level at Chelsea, who is now the manager of his national team. Seriously, it’s like he dreamt it.

Thomas Tuchel described Mount as “the whole package” in their run to win the Champions League together at Chelsea, as the Cobham graduate operated as one of two No.10s behind a central striker. He scored away at Porto in the quarter-final, at home against Real Madrid in the semi and provided the brilliant assist for Kai Havertz in the final against Manchester City.

It was his displays in that campaign and in the Premier League the following season – when he got 11 goals and 10 assists – that cemented his place in the England team and ultimately earned him what has thus far felt like a strange move to Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag bought Mount with a view to playing him in midfield with Bruno Fernandes and very quickly realised that Casemiro wasn’t up to what was a fanciful expectation for him to do the defensive work of three men in the middle. Mount wasn’t about to surpass the United captain as the No.10 and creator-in-chief, which meant it was the wing or – as turned out to be the case more often than not even when fit – nothing.

But while the majority of the United squad look set for a steep learning curve under Amorim and his 3-4-3, for Mount it will feel like slipping into a warm bath, with the inverted winger role he embraced under Tuchel at Chelsea ready and waiting for him to slot into as a round peg amid squares.

Pedro Goncalves, who claimed 81 goals and 57 assists in 190 appearances for Sporting under Amorim, has been described by Manchester United transfer-peddlers as The Next Bruno Fernandes because he’s Portuguese, plays for Sporting and – let’s face it – clicks for laughs at him being described, far more accurately, as The Next Mason Mount would not reap the same rewards from the advertisers.

Amorim wants sporting director Dan Ashworth to look for “players with intensity” in the January transfer window, but the United boss is presumably aware given his limited budget that he will have to squeeze the majority of that increase in energy from players in the current squad, which will be music to Mount’s ears.

If Mount is anything as a footballer, he’s intense. As Tuchel said: “He’s the guy who recovers fast.”

Doubts that Amorim will hold over the capability or willingness of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and the other struggling forwards under Ten Hag to win back the ball in favourable positions high up the pitch and still track back and do their work defensively will soon disappear with Mount, who can’t help himself. The relentlessness is hardwired.

What Amorim will be concerned about is whether Mount can bring as much to United with the ball as his other options, but assuming his primary aim is to change the style of the team to one which strangles and gets in the faces of the opposition, Mount provides an easy fix. And he’s far from the one-dimensional try-hard footballer his critics typically suggest he is despite significant evidence to the contrary in his time as Chelsea’s best and most creative forward.

Tuchel knows and loves what Mount provides more than perhaps anyone and while the mere suggestion that there could be a place for him in the England squad at the World Cup in 2026 will be met with mass scoffing and mirth right now given the absurdly talented No.10s he would have to beat to a place, it will be hard for the England manager to ignore a mainstay for Manchester United, which now Amorim’s at the wheel, Mount has every chance of becoming.

What could have been: Klopp wanted Liverpool to beat United to this big-money Ten Hag signing – report

Manchester United’s transfer business rarely paid dividends during Erik ten Hag’s tenure as most of the Dutchman’s big-money signings failed to shine upon their arrival.

The biggest disappointment has been Antony, who the club paid £86 million for back in 2022. The Brazilian was supposed to end United’s right-wing problems but has managed only 12 goals in two-and-a-half seasons in Manchester.

A decent debut campaign in which the Brazil international netted eight times was followed by a dismal previous campaign where he managed only three goals with his off-field problems creating more headlines.

And following Ten Hag’s sacking, it is expected that the 24-year-old will be moved on with Ruben Amorim having a different way of playing.

Antony was close to Liverpool move

In the Portuguese’s first session, the former Ajax star was played as the right wing-back, a role he is not accustomed to and the Brazilian might seek an exit this January if his minutes do not improve.

However, things could have turned out way different if The Times are to be believed. They have claimed that ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was a huge admirer of the Brazil international.

In fact, he had urged the Merseyside outfit to acquire Antony’s signature as a replacement for Mohamed Salah, a move that Mike Gordon, Fenway Sports Group’s president, ultimately turned down.

“It is understood that it was Mike Gordon, Fenway Sports Group’s president and responsible for the day to day running of the club back then, who ultimately decided renewing (Salah’s contract) was the sensible use of resources.

                      Future up in the air

“That has proved astute, especially as one of the options understood to have been discussed by Jürgen Klopp was to replace Salah with Antony.

“The Brazilian would instead move to Manchester United for £82 million that same summer and has had 17 goal involvements (12 goals, five assists) in 87 appearances since. At a different club under a different manager, those figures might have been better but Salah-esque they are patently not.”

Both Klopp and Ten Hag seemed to think Antony would be the perfect fit for the Premier League but the move to Old Trafford has clearly not worked out.

His only shot at redemption is trying to impress at right wing-back or else the 20-time English league champions will have to incur a huge loss on their initial investment.
