86% pass accuracy, 5 saves: United’s next Schmeichel shines in spite of defeat

Manchester United loanee Radek Vitek impressed once again despite ending up on the losing side as FC Blau-Weiß Linz fell to a 1-2 defeat at home to Grazer AK.

The Czech keeper has made himself an ever-present in the starting line up of Gerald Scheiblehner’s side.

The 21 year old has made 10 appearances in all competitions, keeping four clean sheets in the process.

BW Linz dominated the play with 64% of the ball and they had 14 shots on goal in comparison to the victors’ 11.

Vitek did concede two goals but still impressed as he was given a rating on Sofascore of 7.4.

In 90 minutes he made five saves and one of those stops came from a shot inside the box.He also demonstrated his sweeping ability as he rushed off the line to make one clearance for his team.

The keeper once compared to Peter Schmeichel, also showed off his growing ability on the ball.

Last season at Accrington Stanley, he had little chance to impress in possession but he has added this feature to his game at BW Linz. He made 31 passes, completing 19 out of 22 passes for a completion rate of 86%.

Vitek also connected with four out of his seven long ball attempts as he aimed to launch an attack for his side.

Despite the defeat, the Czech youth international can be happy with his performances as he has the third best clean sheet ratio in the Austrian Bundesliga as 37.5% of his games have ended up with a clean sheet.

He is also only two from leading the race for the golden glove award equivalent in Austria.

The United youngster will next be in action when they travel to Rapid Wien next Sunday.

Van Nistelrooy on the verge of sensational return to management at German club – Sky Sports Germany

Former Manchester United coach Ruud van Nistelrooy is in the running for the Hamburger SV job, as per reports.

Ruben Amorim’s era at United kicked off with a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town on Sunday, as Marcus Rashford’s early goal was cancelled out by Omari Hutchinson’s superb strike.

While a point against the newly promoted side is far from impressive, the Red Devils can be delighted with their five-game unbeaten streak.

It is worth noting that four of the results came under Van Nistelrooy, who impressed with his management skills as the interim boss following Erik ten Hag’s sacking late in October.

Under Van Nistelrooy’s tutelage, the Mancunians played out a 1-1 draw against Chelsea and beat Leicester City in the League Cup as well as in the Premier League. They also earned their first win in this season’s Europa League group phase.

Regardless of his popularity at Carrington, Amorim’s backroom staff took shape without the Dutch legend, who is now attracting interest from a number of clubs.

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Hamburger are considering to appoint Van Nistelrooy as their new head coach following Steffen Baumgart’s departure.

The German outfit, who currently play in 2. Bundesliga, parted ways with Baumgart on the back of just one win in their last five league outings.

It is claimed that they are now “exploring several options” and Nistelrooy features on their list of managerial candidates.

The 48-year-old, who played for the club in 2010, has been “discussed internally” and was “already a topic of discussion before Baumgart became head coach.”

Further, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace, and Leicester City have all reportedly shown interest in Van Nistelrooy’s services.

It is believed that the ex-United striker is in the pole position to lead the Foxes, who recently parted ways with Steve Cooper.

Ruben Amorim at Man Utd: ‘New Manager Thud anyone?’

        ruben-amorim-at-man-utd:-‘new-manager-thud-anyone?’

Man Utd’s draw with Ipswich Town was a massive anti-climax; there wasn’t even a hint of a bounce at Portman Road.

Send your views on the 1-1 draw to theeditor@football365.com or talk Liverpool, Arsenal, Brighton, Leeds United or whatever you fancy…

Ruben at least talks with honesty
I have no idea whether Ruben Amorim is going to be a success at Manchester United, but how refreshing it is to have a manager who actually talks honestly and openly about players and tactics, and who really answers the questions he’s asked. Here’s hoping the job and the media circus don’t turn him to stone.

        Hats off to the medics
In your winners and losers section this week I think you should give a strong shout out to the medical staff at Arsenal and City. They obviously worked miracles getting all their too “injured” to play on international duty players back in time for this weekend’s games.

Saka, especially, sure looked like he was carrying an injury. Hmmmm.

And we’re (supposed to be) LIVE!
Sky Sports are so incompetent at showing replays, it’s off the scale bad.

For the opening goal in the Saints vs Liverpool game they cut away from the live action to show the world’s most boring replay. Then the commentator gets excited about what’s happening live, and they still didn’t cut back until the ball is going into the net!

This happens time and again. We just want the live picture, if there is a long injury, fine – show something but never ever when the ball is in play.

If they were doing a wedding video, they’d cut to showing the best man adjust his tie just as the bride walks down the aisle.

        Salah taking over from Henry?
Made the mistake of reading the Dave Tickner write up of the Liverpool game. Poorly written as is his style. The other staff writers need to charge him a pound a comma, £5 an Oxford comma and shots for every sentence beginning with And or But. This is how we know Stewie et Al aren’t F365 characters, they all write better than them.

He ignored the first half-hour dominance by Liverpool. 45% possession in their third at one point. A couple of breakaways that weren’t handled well resulting in two deserved yellow cards. Then the gift of a goal that also comes from pressure from Jones and a good finish.

After the goal, the pressure was gone. All of a sudden we aren’t creating chances, half the back four are on yellows and the midfield don’t have control.

Then Robbo fouled a player to stop him from going into the area. Free kick on the edge of area. Oh refs given a pen. OK, let’s see the VAR replay. Robbo’s foot outside the line, contact well outside the area, no continuation of the foul into the area. Easy one for the VAR. Arsenal fans note it in your dossier for evidence against.

For those of us of a certain generation, Thierry Henry is the greatest Premier League player of all time. At the end of this season Salah may over take him for goals and tie for leagues won. Also, Salah did not single-handedly give the world the business case for VAR like Henry. Salah will be taking that accolade this season.

Quick question for Arsenal fans. Pep has his worse ever run as a manager and is still higher placed than Arsenal. Hopefully to change next game week. Are you cheering on Liverpool this season as the team most likely to beat City?

Hats off to Spurs, Pep’s bogey team, every now, and then, there’s a good team in there. But, not every week please!
        Alex, South London

Let’s be honest, Liverpool were lucky…
All lazy tropes of banana peels, complacency, looking too far ahead… yeah, thankfully all were avoided at St. Mary’s today. But then, were they? Rather, I reckon indeed we had slipped, were complacent, were caught anticipating Madrid and City a week on before negotiating the nearest hurdle. These are cardinal sins of football are they not. But we got the result, and who in red wouldn’t be made up with how the league table looks right now despite the shaky nature.

Konate has let recent praise and positive reports of his French dispatch go to the head; he was terrible today. I’d felt Robertson cloud cuckooing well before conceding that pen (albeit unluckily, as it was clearly outside the area ((a penny for Michael Oliver’s thoughts as VAR (or should that be a dirham ?))). Wow cringe, triple parenthetical. In any event Robbo’s had several touches in the opening half that were of the absolute poorest quality, like someone who’s never trapped a ball. He’s done a Freaky Friday with Tsimikas this term with neither likely the long-term option. And Szoboszlai was uneven again as usual, despite a momentary flash of quality with the much-needed opener.

At the end of the day we benefited from two shocking errors from our opposition and one (clear) pen for handball, but why not ? Our season has been all about receiving gifts so let’s ride out the theme so long she goes, sleigh bells and all. Find it in your heart, won’t you. Keep giving.

There are plenty of plaudits to go around, Spurs were brilliant. But I want to give Ben Davies the credit he is due and has been due for years. Top class pro who has been a brilliant steward of the club for a decade. Selfless, competent, and hardworking. We on the outside don’t get to peer behind the curtain of The Locker Room, but I have to think he’s the sort of standard setter that every club would benefit from having. Chelsea not a big team, actually
Whilst I generally agreed with the gist of Lee’s mail entitled ‘Guardiola the fraud?’ On Sunday, I can’t accept his description of Chelsea as a traditional big team’.

Unless Lee was about eight in 2003 when Abramovich turned up and considers 20 years as long enough for something to be considered traditional, he is really very wrong.

Chelsea are not traditionally successful, and not really a big team. They’ve just had a lot of money recently, twice.

Video: “An average PL team” – United legend viciously tears into the club’s squad

          video:-“an-average-pl-team”-–-united-legend-viciously-tears-into-the-club’s-squad

Former Manchester United player and now Sky Sports pundit, Roy Keane, has torn into Ruben Amorim’s players after their 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

An evening that promised so much at Portman Road got off to the perfect start after great work from Amad Diallo led to Marcus Rashford prodding home the opener within two minutes.

Sadly, things didn’t really get much better for United as Ipswich drew themselves level and could have won the match if it weren’t for the heroics of Andre Onana.

Many United fans were left disappointed that more players did not try and put on more of a show in Amorim’s first match in charge and were left with a familiar sinking feeling that was all too common under previous manager, Erik ten Hag.

The draw left United in 12th place in the Premier League standings after 12 matches, with a goal difference of exactly zero.

Roy Keane was certainly far from impressed with what he saw and while speaking to Sky Sports he lambasted the current state of the club.

“Man United, at this moment in time whatever the problems are, are an average Premier League team.”

Keane then elaborated on the task in hand for the new head coach and claimed, “so many teams are way ahead of them. There’s a long way to go for this United team.”

“Huge job for the manager, huge job. And, again, we keep saying it but listen, hopefully they get it sorted.”

The Irishman continued his pessimistic view of the playing squad by asserting, “you still have the same players out there. The same problems. We talk about leopards and spots, the issue with United over the last couple of years. Lack off goals, lack of quality.”

The former captain also claimed that this current side have basically no chance of making the top four as there is “no evidence” that they just won’t keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

The Red Devils now have two home matches to show Amorim what they are made of with Thursday’s home tie versus FK Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League and then another game at Old Trafford at home to Everton.

“He is so smart”: Ruben Amorim waxes lyrical over United new boy after fantastic display

            “he-is-so-smart”:-ruben-amorim-waxes-lyrical-over-united-new-boy-after-fantastic-display

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim waxed lyrical over Noussair Mazraoui’s performance against Ipswich Town.

Despite a drab 1-1 draw at Portman Road, the Moroccan was one of the few players who could hold their head high after the display.

Amorim is likely to be far from impressed from what he witnessed with most connected to United on a dark East Anglian evening but Mazraoui will certainly have left a good impression.

It is safe to say that he has currently been the best summer recruit for United and has adapted to life in English football very well indeed.

Mazraoui put in an all-action performance with numerous touches, successful passes and duel wins.

The showing was even more impressive as he was tasked with playing in an unfamiliar role as the right sided centre back in a defensive three.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, it was clear Amorim also felt the same about the Moroccan as many fans currently do.

Amorim bemoaned the current lack of options at centre back at the club but praised the effort of United’s number three.

“We don’t have too many centre-backs so we have to adapt some players. I thought Noussair Mazraoui did very well.”

“He is so smart and is so important for us. He can play anywhere and that kind of player is crucial for our future.”

This is not the first time he has shown his flexibility as he also played as a number 10 for Erik ten Hag away to Fenerbahce last month.

He has also played at right and left back and could conceivably be asked to fill in at the wing back spots in Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation moving forward.

Ruben Amorim wants end to ‘do what you like’ culture at Manchester United

              ruben-amorim-wants-end-to-‘do-what-you-like’-culture-at-manchester-united

Ruben Amorim insists it is on Manchester United as a club to set the right culture and leadership for their players after Casemiro and Marcus Rashford drew criticism for visiting the United States during the international break.

The duo were granted permission to take five days off by the club and visited Florida and New York City respectively while many of their teammates were off with their national teams, which Gary Neville felt was ‘not right’ given Manchester United’s poor start to the season.

Neville sat down with new gaffer Amorim for an interview with Sky Sports and raised the question with him directly, with the Portuguese responding: “The first thing, it was five days off. The second thing, they received the information of [permission to take] five days off. They are big boys.

“Us as a club have to set the standards and have to manage that. It’s my decision if they can have five days, or three days, or three days to rest and you cannot fly. This is something that us as a club have to decide. Would I set a different structure? Yes, for sure.”

READ: Man Utd: Amorim ‘must avoid three things’ with target set; Neville in ‘nauseating serial whinger’ crew

Amorim acknowledged that a five-day break was too long for this stage of the season, but added: “We cannot put this on the players. They told them they have five days off so they can fly anywhere. Because nobody in the club says you cannot fly, so they have to live their lives because they are grown men and they have to decide these things.

“But us, as a club, have to change these standards. You said that you, as a player, thought in a different way.

“For me, the big difference is your time. You had great leadership at the time [Neville was at United], very, very strong. And the culture was already here when you started.

“So it’s a long time with the same identity, the same way of seeing things. I’m just imagining but even your team-mates, if you do that, they will talk to you. So now it’s a different point, and you have to acknowledge that.

“So this must be started in the club, with us and me being responsible in that area. So we cannot, this time, put that on Rash or Case.

“They received information ‘five days off, do what you like’, so we have to as a club set better standards, and we will try to do that.”

Amorim watch: Close eye on new Manchester United manager in his first game

                amorim-watch:-close-eye-on-new-manchester-united-manager-in-his-first-game

Ruben Amorim is the new figure of greatest fascination after arriving from Sporting hoping to transplant his success in Portugal onto the sick club of the Premier League, Manchester United.

The new gaffer got started with a trip to newly-promoted Ipswich Town, and all eye were on Amorim to see what kind of immediate effect he could have at Manchester United as Erik ten Hag’s successor. This is how his day unfolded.

15:30: The starting line-up is, naturally, the first source of intrigue. Amorim makes three changes from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s last selection against Leicester, drafting in Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Alejandro Garnacho in place of Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte and Rasmus Hojlund.

That XI looks like it would sit nicely in a 4-3-3, but Amorim went 3-4-3 at Sporting. Is he going to Victor Moses someone into a wing-back (Amad Diallo?) and stick Noussair Mazraoui at centre-back? Twitter seems to think so.

16:05: Sky Sports also reckon it’ll be 3-4-3 with Amad Diallo at right wing-back, Dalot on the other side, and Fernandes and Garnacho flanking Rashford.

16:15: Amorim appears on Sky Sports to preview the game. He’s asked how he wants his first game to be written about come the final whistle. He replies: “I don’t care, journalists are scum anyway. Get out of my face.” Then Amorim pushes the interviewer to the ground and throws his notes onto his prone carcass, shouting “NICE CLIPBOARD, NERD!”

Alright, he doesn’t really. Instead he says words to the effect that he just wants them to win and that’s it because it’s such early days and it’ll take them time to develop performances properly, which seems boringly reasonable.

READ: Keane laments lack of ‘fear’ as Ruben Amorim Man United reign gets under way at Ipswich

16:30: And we’re under way, to the tune of Hey Jude (1968) by Ipswich’s most famous musical sons, The Beatles.

16:32: Send Marcus Rashford to America every week we reckon.

Amad is indeed the right wing-back, and on his first roar up the pitch to the edge of the Ipswich box, he puts in a lovely ball for Rashford to tap home. 1-0.

Amorim calmly turns away in response and returns to his seat, taking a little sip from his water bottle like a University Challenge who has just got a difficult answer right and wants to disguise their utter smugness.

16:35: The United fans are chanting Amorim’s name to the tune of Baby Give It Up by KC and the Sunshine Band (1982).

That song was released three years before Amorim was even born. Would it kill football fans to borrow the tune to any songs that were released more recently than The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army (2003)? Give us a bit of HAIM or Self Esteem or something, you cowards. We’d even take Valerie by The Zutons (2006).

16:54: Unfortunately, that goal has allowed United to be a bit comfortable. It’s a wee bit scrappy, Ipswich have had a couple of pops, United are happy enough playing in second gear against a fairly limited but enthusiastic side. Is Amorim going to be happy about that? Hard to say.

For what it’s worth, there has a little bit of something in the United press, which lines up roughly 5-2-3 cum 5-3-2, with a distinct back five, Casemiro and Eriksen in the middle, and Rashford joined by one or both of Fernandes and Garnacho, one of whom will occasionally drop back into midfield. But Ipswich are still getting through.

16:57: The Amorim Looks: Big black coat, grey jumper, blue chinos, white trainers, no hat. In case you wondered. The Iberian manager’s uniform of choice, in other words. Has a way to go before he can rival Pep Guardiola’s on-point knitwear game. Get thee to the Trafford Centre.

16:59: Disappointingly, United are using the draught excluder to defend a direct free kick. No. It’s stupid. How often do you actually see shots go under the wall and in, versus set pieces getting scored on the rebound by an unmarked man?

17:08: Peter Drury informs us that a fire alarm at Stockley Park means VAR is not in fact in operation just at the moment. God please let something happen in Ipswich’s favour as a result. We want to see where Amorim sits on the swivel-eyes scale, from Ange Postecoglou at one end to Nuno Espirito Santo at the other.

17:13: 1-1. Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike finds the top corner just a couple of minutes before the break, and we get a classic hand-over-mouth and squeeze of the nose from Amorim, like a University Challenge contestant who recognises a question as being about Dr Faustus but couldn’t remember the bloody title in time. Tip of his tongue, it was.

17:15: More nose-in-hand action from Amorim as he paces idly around the technical area, no doubt weighing up what to say and do at the break.

17:19: And as the half-time whistle goes, Amorim…rubs his nose with his index finger. Arsene Knows. Ruben Nose.

17:21: We wonder if Amorim’s nose is in any way enchanted, like the Queen’s nose in The Queen’s Nose, which we are staggered to learn ran for 44 episodes over eight years. If Gary Mabbutt turns up, our suspicions will be confirmed.

On Gary Mabbutt’s birthday it’s worth remembering his starring role in classic 90s kids show The Queen’s Nose.

17:34: Head down, hands in pockets for Amorim as he re-emerges from the tunnel. No nose action and no sign of Mabbutt, yet.

17:40: Some nice little exchanges of position there between as Amad swaps with Mazraoui and then with Garnacho as United get forward (Garnacho and Fernandes have swapped flanks now, by the way), but the move breaks down after they work it across to the left. That’s the kind of fluidity Amorim will want to encourage, we’re sure.

17:43: …and there’s the kind of old habits he’ll want to get rid of as the United midfield inexplicably vanishes into thin air to allow Liam Delap to burst up the middle and get into the box to receive a cross. Lovely little flicked back-heel, too, but Onana saves it.

17:44: United have been sleeping since the break but have just woken up. Fernandes sends Garnacho away on the counter-attack, but he’s tackled as he arrives into the box and tries to square to Rashford. And then, two minutes later, a nice little passing exchange ends in Fernandes having a shot blocked.

17:46: Amorim has already seen enough, though: on come Shaw and  Ugarte for Evans and Casemiro. Shaw goes in on the left of the back three. Given Amorim likes his centre-backs to get forward as supplementary full-backs, you suspect he would have done that from the start had Shaw been able to do the full 90. He’s got two full-backs either side of De Ligt now.

17:51: Another rub of the nose from Amorim as he send a ball up the touchline for a throw. Still Mabbutt remains curiously absent.

17:56: As Ipswich make a change, Amorim prepares another double sub with Hojlund and Zirkzee stripped (to their kit, not nude) and ready to come on. Amorim has out the big folder of tactical homework, and has formed his hand into a beak to vibrate over sections of it in curious detail while Zirkzee studiously pretends to be taking it all in.

17:58: Zirkzee and Hojlund now come on to replace Eriksen and Rashford. Fernandes has gone into central midfield alongside Ugarte. Hojlund is up the middle, Zirkzee right, Garnacho left.

18:05: This game is in a very boring holding pattern now. United pass it around a bit at the back. They eventually come forward. Ipswich stop them in wide areas around the edge of the box. Arijanet Muric punts the ball directly at the linesman just to try and liven things up a bit.

18:07: United are struggling to get used to playing a front three. Case in point: Zirkzee drops deep to link the play back to the midfield, but leaves Hojlund totally isolated, so it means very little because there’s nothing left forward United can then actually play up to. Zirkzee belatedly gets forward off a one-two, then curls it into row R from the edge of the box. It’s still one of the best efforts United have had since their opening goal.

Garnacho is meanwhile absolutely brilliant at drifting wide and running himself into blind channels before losing the ball. We’ve seen nothing penetrative from the wing-backs since Rashford’s goal, either.

There really is an awful lot for Amorim to do on the training ground, isn’t there…they’re making an exciting attack-minded formation look exceptionally ineffective.

18:10: Fernandes curls a free kick narrowly wide and grabs his nose in frustration. It’s catching.

18:16: On comes Mason Mount for Garnacho. Do you remember Mason Mount? Lad who used to be decent at Chelsea? Bit like Cole Palmer but not as good? Turns out he’s at United now.

Feels very like Amorim is waiting for any one of his forwards and midfielders to show him they can actually do a job: he’s gone through multiple different iterations and partnerships. Rashford’s goal aside, it turns out none of them have magically turned into better players just because they’ve replaced their manager. Who’d have thought.

18:20: This is boring and we’re bored.

18:25: And it’s over. Thank god. 1-1 and a decidedly meh start to life under Amorim. But it was always likely to be so. Amorim gives McKenna a handshake, and walks directionlessly around the pitch. He rubs his nose and gathers up his players to go over to applaud the away fands, which they do with the least possible enthusiasm.

18:44: Amorim joins Sky for a chat. Says you could see the players were preoccupied with what there positioning ought to be but that it was a tough match, and that United never controlled the ball or the tempo ‘but they tried … and you can see the players really want this’. If you say so.

“The most important thing is they want this and sometimes they don’t know how to get it … We’re trying to find things about the players and we will need a lot of time.”

Ed Sheeran then interrupts a live broadcast to say hello to Jamie Redknapp. Why? On every level, why?

Amorim shakes his head at just how many interviews he now has to do, saying: “This week I’ve spoken more than in four years at Sporting. I just want to work with my players, nothing more.”

18:50: Why didn’t Gary Mabbutt turn up? That’s what we want to know.

United’s man of the match vs Ipswich gives brutally frank account of Amorim’s first match in charge

                  united’s-man-of-the-match-vs-ipswich-gives-brutally-frank-account-of-amorim’s-first-match-in-charge

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has called on him and his teammates to look forward, following Sunday’s disappointing draw with Ipswich Town.

United took an early lead through Marcus Rashford, who got on the end of a sensational Amad Diallo cross to guide the ball into the back of the net.

However, Ipswich pushed back and grew into the game as time went by. Eventually, the Tractor Boys restored parity after Omari Hutchinson’s effort deflected off Noussair Mazraoui.

It could have been much worse for United, were it not for a number of heroic saves from their goalkeeper.

Onana made two big stops to deny Liam Delap in either half. He also pulled off another instinctive late save to thwart substitute Conor Chaplin.

In his post-match press conference, Ruben Amorim admitted that Onana ensured the Red Devils were not on the losing side at Portman Road.

Speaking to MUTV [via Manchester Evening News], Onana refused to dwell on the team’s performance vs. Ipswich, instead choosing to look ahead.

“We are at such a big club so there is no time to cry. We have to move on. Good games will come, better days will come.”

“I always say that it will not rain forever; the sun will shine. We know that it is just a matter of time.”

“We have to continue working hard, pushing ourselves, stay together and stay positive because there are still a lot of games to go, competitions where we can fight. We are all excited and very positive about this season.”

On his individual display, Onana remarked, “It was not enough [his saves] to win the game. I think we have to continue working hard. I will always take responsibility.”

“Of course, I am happy with these saves but the most important thing is the victory of the team; when you don’t win it is difficult.”

“We have to move on, take responsibility and move on and be very positive.”

Up next for United is a Europa League fixture against FK Bodø/Glimt on Thursday.

Ruben Amorim’s choices during the Ipswich game speak volumes about struggling United striker’s future – report

                    ruben-amorim’s-choices-during-the-ipswich-game-speak-volumes-about-struggling-united-striker’s-future-–-report

It appears as if Joshua Zirkzee may be edging ever closer to departing Manchester United as his struggles at the club persist.

Earlier this week, The Peoples Person relayed that Juventus are planning to sign Zirkzee in the summer transfer window.

Zirkzee himself also seems open to the move, with reports claiming that the Dutch forward is open to joining Juventus as life at Old Trafford becomes “unbearable” for him.

Still, what these reports had not yet taken into account is how Zirkzee would be viewed by Ruben Amorim now that he is the United manager.

Tuttosport were quick to acknowledge this fact, going so far as to claim that United’s match against Ipswich Town this evening would play a role in determining Zirkzee’s future.

“The Dutch striker has gradually slipped to the bottom of the team’s offensive hierarchy, to the point that his last appearance on the pitch as a starter in the league dates back to September,” the Italian newspaper noted.

“But Ten Hag, in the meantime, has been sacked, and the Portuguese coach has just taken over,” the article continued. Referring to the Ipswich game, the newspaper declared that the match would “begin to tell us something about the consideration that Zirkzee enjoys with the former Sporting boss.”

Unfortunately, this evening’s 1-1 draw was not a promising sign for Zirkzee. The forward started on the bench, only coming on late in the second half and making little impact during his cameo.

If tonight’s match can be read into, it appears as if Zirkzee has not quite earned the confidence of Amorim to break into the starting 11. What’s more, both he and fellow striker Rasmus Hojlund were snubbed for the striker role for Marcus Rashford, suggesting that Amorim doesn’t quite view Zirkzee as the starting striker that United needs, at least at this stage.

While Amorim’s opinion remains a mystery, it was reported that several senior figures at the club do not believe that Zirkzee is performing at the required level, especially after having months to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

The lack of faith in Zirkzee’s abilities also comes amid numerous transfer links, including a potential swap deal involving Douglas Luiz.

Ultimately, when looking at Amorim’s favoured 3-4-3 lineup and the squad at his disposal, it appears as if he has little need for Zirkzee’s services. While he may be a new arrival, United might need to cut their losses and part ways with the forward, who seems to be yet another new signing who simply doesn’t seem to be suited to life in the Premier League.

‘Pointless’ to analyse Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United bow as mass squad changes predicted

                      ‘pointless’-to-analyse-ruben-amorim’s-manchester-united-bow-as-mass-squad-changes-predicted

Jamie Redknapp believes trying to draw conclusions on what Manchester United will look like long-term under Ruben Amorim is effectively pointless, predicting that the line-up that played out a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town will be unrecognisable over time.

Manchester United got off to a brilliant start to Amorim’s first game in charge as Marcus Rashford tapped home Amad Diallo’s low cross to the near post at the end of a blistering run, but that was to be United’s one and only real moment in the game bar a Bruno Fernandes free kick that went narrowly wide.

Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike equalised just before half time, with Ipswich looking the more likely of the two sides to go on and win the game in the second half but having to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Amorim had set up in the 3-4-3 he had used to great success at Sporting, with a back three of Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs De Ligt and Jonny Evans; Amad and Diogo Dalot at wing-back; Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in central midfield; and a front three of Bruno Fernandes, Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

United went through all five substitutions with the front line and midfield coming in for particular adjustments throughout the game, but none of them looked anything like sparking into life.

READ: Amorim Watch: Close eye on new Manchester United manager in his first game

Speaking Sky Sports after the game, Redknapp said: “They haven’t got quality in the team. There’s a lot of problems you have to solve. I’m already fed up talking about this system that he’s going to employ. I am, because it’s day one.

“The players that are in this system right now are not going to be the players in the future. You’re not going to see Jonny Evans as the left-sided centre-back, you’re not going to see Mazraoui [at centre-back], you’re not going to see [Amad and Dalot as the] two wing backs probably. Obviously they’re both opposite foot and they’re playing on the outside. Is that midfield going to be Casemiro and Eriksen? Of course it isn’t

“So we’re going to try and analyse it, [but] it’s almost pointless, because the system is going to change, because the players are going to change, and then they’re going to look better.

“In a way, the best thing that could probably happen is not get fooled by these players right now, because after two minutes we’re looking and thinking, ‘wow, the Messiah’s here, everything’s going to change. Look how good they look’. But then they became their true selves in the end and they see that the quality isn’t there.

“So this is going to take time, it’s going to take new personnel. They were always going to have to figure it out. He’s going to be changing the team probably week in, week out, searching for who is going to be the right people in this system.

“Once he gets that, then he has a chance. But right now you couldn’t pick the team that’s going to be there in six month, because you don’t know who’s going to fit into what he wants.”
