“Damaged him a little bit”: Former United star pinpoints exactly what has caused Marcus Rashford’s dismal form

    “damaged-him-a-little-bit”:-former-united-star-pinpoints-exactly-what-has-caused-marcus-rashford’s-dismal-form

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe believes Marcus Rashford’s current struggles in a red shirt are due to issues “between his ears” with the 27-year-old forward the only person capable of improving his situation.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person, courtesy of Racing Tipster, Sharpe revealed Rashford “can’t seem to get out of first or second gear” this season, with the Englishman scoring just one Premier League goal before this weekend’s fixtures.

Rashford, deployed as a number nine by Ruben Amorim in the Portuguese coach’s first game at the helm for the Red Devils, added his second of the campaign just two minutes into the match against Ipswich Town yesterday, which felt like a potentially transformational moment for the 27-year-old.

But both Rashford and his team failed to capitalise on the early advantage, allowing Ipswich back into the game, with the Tractor Boys drawing level before the half-time interval. And, based on the Man of the Match performance by Andre Onana, it was United who should have been more content with the 1-1 draw by the full-time whistle.

Sharpe described the performance at Portman Road as a “carry on” from the “negative” displays earlier in the season under previous manager Erik ten Hag, though the 53-year-old contends there were some “positives”.

Rashford was quiet following his opening goal, outside of some nice moments of link up play and positive runs which were not found by his team mates. And while his work rate was improved at times, the lackadaisical approach which has characterised a dismal last eighteen months for the forward was also repeatedly on display.

There’s a sense that Rashford does not impose himself on football matches in the way that his physical and technical talents should allow him to, regardless of what system he finds himself in or which manager is selecting him.

Sharpe contends “it’s up to Marcus Rashford” to recapture the forward’s scintillating from during the 2022/23 campaign (30 goals and 9 assists) under new head coach Amorim, who places absolute importance on intensity and work rate from his players.

Sharpe even believes the success of that impressive season has “damaged” Rashford mentally as it’s created a standard he has, thus far, been unable to reproduce.

“Marcus Rashford still has the whole world in his hands, and can’t seem to get out of first or second gear at the moment. I think the standard he set a couple of seasons ago, scoring 30 odd goals and setting the world alight, has damaged him a little bit. He can’t get his head around how to get back to it.”

The former United winger contends Amorim will be a “good coach” for Rashford, but also states neither Ten Hag nor Jose Mourinho were bad fits for the 27-year-old either. Rather, the academy graduate must focus inwards if he is to find the higher gears he’s demonstrated earlier in his career, as opposed to relying on a new manager or system.

“I think every issue that Rashford has got will be between his ears, and only Marcus Rashford can sort that out,” Sharpe concludes. “He needs to go at people…and try and switch his brain off, let himself free wheel and let his abilities shine through hard work.”

Given the importance Rashford’s new boss places on ‘hard work’, the 27-year-old will need to demonstrate this attribute in abundance if he’s to maintain his position in Amorim’s starting eleven moving forward. Then, and only then, Sharpe suggests, will the goal scoring return.

Which players have forced the most Premier League manager sackings by scoring?

      which-players-have-forced-the-most-premier-league-manager-sackings-by-scoring?

Enzo Fernandez has helped force two Premier League manager sackings this year, although Mauricio Pochettino might argue that it is actually three.

The following is a rundown of the players who scored in a Premier League manager’s last game before losing their job. Sackings, resignations and mutual consents are all considered, provided there was one clear result which proved to be the tipping point. And it had to happen during the season, not in the summer.

On the rare occasion a manager left his post after winning, we will take into account their most recent defeat; we only want results so damaging that the manager in question had to go soon after. To use Frank Lampard’s 2021 Chelsea exit as an example, his final match was an FA Cup win over Luton so the previous game, a 2-0 defeat to Leicester in which Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison were the scorers, will be used. Same for Daniel Farke, who left Norwich after beating Brentford in November of that year, with the Raphinha and Rodrigo-inspired loss to Leeds in his penultimate match cited as key.

A total of 242 different players have induced one manager exit by scoring at least once in their final game. This number includes such names as Celestine Babayaro (Kenny Dalglish, Newcastle), Jon Flanagan (Andre Villas-Boas, Spurs), Vinnie Jones (Ron Atkinson, Aston Villa), Gary O’Neil (Peter Reid, Leeds), Arturo Vidal (Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea), and Nicolas Jackson, who helped put Steve Cooper out of his Leicester misery.

United set for transfer battle with Liverpool to land 18yo midfield wonderkid as Amorim demands intensity – report

        united-set-for-transfer-battle-with-liverpool-to-land-18yo-midfield-wonderkid-as-amorim-demands-intensity-–-report

Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of Manchester United ended 1-1 against Ipswich Town on Sunday with quite a few players struggling in the 3-4-3 system.

The size of the job at hand just became quite apparent at Portman Road with Portuguese currently lacking the ideal personnel to play the way he wants.

Midfield is a big concern with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggling to execute the high press while lacking the engine to track back when losing possession.

Both have been linked with January exits but the Red Devils do not have a huge transfer war chest to bring in Amorim’s chosen targets in the winter.

        Midfielders needed

And INEOS have shown they are not afraid of recruiting young stars, keeping the long haul in mind, and as per Football Insider, an 18-year-old Scottish wonderkid is on their radar.

Lennon Miller of Motherwell has been setting the Scottish league alight and despite being only 18, has already attracted interest from Scotland’s premier duo Celtic and Rangers as well as a host of English giants.

He can play all across the middle of the park and can even do a job out wide. This season, he has started in all but one game, scoring four times while registering as many assists.

Apart from the Red Devils, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Aston Villa have all sent scouts to watch the midfielder in action recently.

And while Celtic were in the lead, Liverpool are prepared to outbid them to win the race. Miller’s current deal is valid until 2026 and a cut-price exit could be on the cards if Motherwell fail to agree a new deal.

“Liverpool could blow Celtic out of the water in their race to sign Motherwell sensation Lennon Miller, sources have told Football Insider.

        Miller in demand

“Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa scouts were all in attendance at the under-21s clash between Scotland and France, with Miller the focus of their attention.

“Celtic are the current favourites to land a deal for the youngster. However, interest from English clubs is said to have thrown a spanner in the works, with a number of clubs set to enter the race and put pressure on the Hoops.”

The Scotland U21 international’s market value stands at €1.6 million as per Transfermarkt but Motherwell are likely to ask for a lot more given the presence of Premier League sides.

INEOS have revealed their preference for British players and Miller’s profile makes him an ideal acquisition. United should go all out to outbid fierce rivals Liverpool if they are serious about the Scottish sensation.

Richards makes Man Utd transfer window prediction as he likens them to ‘a fizzy drink’

          richards-makes-man-utd-transfer-window-prediction-as-he-likens-them-to-‘a-fizzy-drink’

Former Man City defender Micah Richards doubts Man Utd will buy the players Ruben Amorim wants in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils made a disappointing start to life under new boss Amorim after Man Utd appointed the Portuguese coach to take over from Erik ten Hag at the beginning of this month.

His first match in charge on Sunday ended in a 1-1 draw against relegation-battlers Ipswich Town with Amorim’s side moving up to 12th in the Premier League table with the point.

Marcus Rashford scored inside the first two minutes to give Amorim’s side a perfect start but Omari Hutchinson’s long-range strike just before half-time fave the Tractor Boys a share of the spoils against Man Utd.

Man Utd spent around £180m to give Ten Hag five players to improve his team in the summer and there are now doubts as to whether Amorim will be given funds in January as the Red Devils are close to their PSR threshold.

Former Man City defender Richards thought Man Utd were “a bit disappointing” in Amorim’s first match and doubts they will bring in many new players in January.

Richards said on The Rest is Football podcast: “They looked alive, they looked sharp. All the things you thought (would happen). I was getting excited, and then it just went flat.

“I don’t think he is going to get the players he wants in January but I think in the summer we are going to see five or six players come in now. I just believe that. I was a bit disappointing in the showing. That’s not the manager, he needs time to implement his style.

“It was almost like a fizzy drink. I expected so much, they started so well and then it just fizzled out a bit. On another day Ipswich could have scored four or five.”

Despite the draw, Amorim is determined to introduce his new 3-4-3 formation and tactics on the Man Utd players from the get-go: “They are thinking about too much, because things are so different.

“Some details, they used to pass the ball and go forwards and now they have to go back. These types of things, they have to think too much. [Diogo] Dalot used to do it, he would pass the ball and then go inside and play in midfield. Now he has to stick in this position.

“It is hard for the players in three days to try to cope with everything, but we have two ways: we forget about the new idea – and I think that’s why I was brought here in the middle of the season – and we try to cope with what they are used to doing. And next year, at the same stage, we will be here with the same problems.

“Or we start now, we risk a little bit, we suffer a little bit and next year we will be better at this point. So we have to risk it a little bit.”

Owen Hargreaves names the four players that left Ruben Amorim “really frustrated” against Ipswich Town

            owen-hargreaves-names-the-four-players-that-left-ruben-amorim-“really-frustrated”-against-ipswich-town

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United bow ended with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town yesterday (Sunday) with the new head coach failing to get off to a winning start.

United raced into the lead after just 80 seconds but couldn’t build on the electric opening and were pegged back on the stroke of half-time.

The second half failed to deliver an upturn in fortunes, with Amorim visibly agitated on the touchline as he watched his players go through the motions, much like they have for the majority of the season.

As reported by The Mirror, former United man Owen Hargreaves echoed those sentiments and said Amorim was left “frustrated” at the lack of tactical nous shown by some of his first team stars.

“He was pretty frustrated, I’m not going to lie. He was right in front of me and he was really, really frustrated with a lot of things,” he said.

“I think initially Dalot’s positioning, I think he was a little bit frustrated with that in the first half. I think the midfield balance he didn’t really like. And when Zirkzee came on I don’t think he was overly happy with his positioning and Hojlund as well.”

Dalot has been tipped to excel in the wing back role Amorim is likely to use him for but his struggles yesterday underlined there is work to be done with the 25-year old.

Zirkzee’s issues are far more obvious with the Dutchman looking scarily off the pace since his arrival at Old Trafford. Rumours of a January move only serve to highlight his dreadful start in a red shirt.

Hargreaves continued by saying the new United coach had players shoehorned into certain positions on the pitch but given his devotion to the 3-4-3 formation that has served him so well, it will be down to the players to adapt quickly.

“Zirkzee played as a No 10 and I don’t think that suited him. I think Marcus prefers to play on the left, and you could see that today. To me there looked like four or five players playing outside their natural position and that showed at times. Looking at that today I didn’t feel like it suited a lot of the players out there.

I don’t think Marcus knew at times where he needed to be when the ball was in certain areas and Ruben was quite frustrated with that,” said Hargreaves.

Hojlund and Rashford will be expected to play a key role in Amorim’s side moving forward but Rashford, in particular, is going to have to get used to a new role, likely more centrally, if he is going to survive under the new regime.

No doubt the 27-year-old remains a threat, underlined by his early goal yesterday, but Rashford must improve his overall game if he is to recapture his form under Amorim.

Hargreaves believes Amorim would have realised the job ahead is going to be “a lot harder than he envisioned” after Sunday’s game with the point failing to lift United out of the bottom half of the Premier League table.

They call it the ‘curiosity gap’; it’s a phrase that’s been used in YouTube and copywriting circles for the last couple of years but it’s now entering the publishing mainstream, with Reach audience director Martin Little defining it as “telling the story as it is but withholding the need-to-know piece of information from that headline so that people still feel the need to go and find out more”.

All content publishers try and operate in this curiosity gap. It’s the reason why the two Manchester United players namechecked by Ruben Amorim are not namechecked by us. We absolutely use those techniques; we absolutely have to use those techniques or we would not survive.

But no publisher is as dedicated nor as shameless with this ambition than Reach, who own the Manchester Evening News along with just about every ‘local newspaper website’ that used to be an actual local newspaper.

Headlines like ‘The Italian restaurant near Greater Manchester named the best in England’ are commonplace (Mediawatch literally clicked on that one yesterday, so a massive tick for you, MEN), and money-saving expert Martin Lewis has been publicly vocal after his attention was drawn to just how much Martin Lewis content exists in the realms of Reach.

Just an average day for news about @MartinSLewis on the Reach network! Today former online editor at OK! @RachelMcGrath writes about why writing ever more stories might not be good for readers (or writers) https://t.co/M892JJ0bOc pic.twitter.com/slZnE75vU6

And it’s presumably lodged in this ‘curiosity gap’ where we will find this latest trend, which we noted a fortnight ago in Mediawatch.

To sum up, a writer notes what we can all observe with our own eyes and then the headline begins ‘I saw/watched/spotted’ as if they have instead borne witness to something extraordinary.

What have they seen? What have they spotted?

You might have thought you watched Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim at Portman Road on Sunday (we did) but you didn’t see what they saw…

I spotted Ruben Amorim copying Pep Guardiola during Manchester United draw vs Ipswich Town

Did he corner an opposition player for passive-aggressive post-match praise? Did he look rather fetching in a polo neck?

Did he balls. This is what the MEN ‘spotted’ from Amorim that was just like Guardiola…

Pep Guardiola is probably the most animated manager in the Premier League but Amorim will give him a run for his money.

And that’s it. He was ‘animated’. Like almost every Premier League manager not called Erik ten Hag.

Over at The Sun, they’re not claiming to have spotted anything themselves because that is the sole preserve of the ‘eagle-eyed fans’. They ‘spotted Ruben Amorim’s ice cold reaction to Marcus Rashford’s opening goal in Ipswich clash’.

Now we think we spotted that too – he basically did nothing (unusual for such an animated man) – but we would never describe ourselves as eagle-eyed; we just watched the telly like everybody else.

Even The Sun acknowledge Amorim was ‘caught on camera having a very muted reaction to taking the early lead’.

They know it doesn’t take ‘eagle-eyed fans’ to spot something repeated several times on screen but that’s the curiosity gap: What did they spot that I didn’t? The answer is usually ‘f*** all’ but by the time that ‘need-to-know information’ is revealed, you have already seen 17 ads.

‘Rúben Amorim isn’t usually this animated – he knows how hard United job is’ is the headline in The Times atop a Martin Samuel column.

Martin, unless you can compare Amorim’s very first game in charge of Sporting with his very first game in charge of Manchester United, you are not comparing apples with apples.

‘Those who know head coach from Sporting days would have been surprised to see his constant gesticulations and irate finger-wagging – he is under no illusions at Old Trafford.’

They’re not his players, fella. He’s been training them for just a few days and they were playing an entirely different system. This is not A Manchester United Thing; it’s a New Manager Thing.

And what mark did this ‘immense display’ earn Onana from Charlie Wyett? A massive 7/10.

Maybe sending a Norwich fan to Portman Road wasn’t such a great idea. He was always going to be a grumpy f***er unless United won 6-0.

Ed Sheeran causes awkward moment for Ruben Amorim after United’s frustrating display at Ipswich

                ed-sheeran-causes-awkward-moment-for-ruben-amorim-after-united’s-frustrating-display-at-ipswich

Manchester United were unable to get off to a winning start under new head coach Ruben Amorim after failing to beat newly promoted Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

Despite taking an early lead, United couldn’t fend off a spirited Ipswich side who equalized just before half-time and could have found a winner had it not been for Andre Onana.

Amorim admitted his players were “overthinking” in certain areas as he attempts to build the confidence back in the squad after a poor start to the season.

Alongside his Premier League debut, the Portuguese coach was introduced to a pop superstar at Portman Road, although probably not in ideal circumstances.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Ed Sheeran gatecrashed Amorim’s post match interview with Sky Sports, with the Ipswich fan and minority shareholder clearly more happy with the result than the United boss.

Sheeran came over to greet pundit Jamie Redknapp in the midst of Amorim answering a question before saying “I don’t think he (Amorim) wants to speak to me”.

Amorim didn’t look too impressed with the interruption as Sheeran continued “I love being back in the Premier League”.

Fans took to social media to criticize the singer who was labelled as ‘rude’ by many of the watching public.

The United coach did continue with the interview but after overseeing a lacklustre display could have done without the rather awkward moment caused by Sheeran.

Amorim’s United got off to a dream start at Portman Road with Marcus Rashford opening the scoring after just 80 seconds.

Amad Diallo’s wonderful assist was forced home by Rashford who started the game through the middle in a role he still doesn’t look ultra-comfortable in.

However, Omari Hutchinson’s deflected long range strike meant United had to settle for a draw on Amorim’s debut and will have to wait for their first win under the new coach.

United moved up to 12th with the point bur are now six points off the top four places, which the new head coach will eventually hope to overturn by the end of the campaign.

Ipswich fan reveals what he said to Man Utd legend Keane to provoke him: ‘I hate the bloke’

An Ipswich Town fan has revealed the “truth” he told Man Utd legend Roy Keane to provoke him into an angry confrontation on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford’s second Premier League goal of the season after two minutes put the Red Devils ahead at Portman Road before Omari Hutchinson’s deflected long-range effort found the back of the net before half-time to give Ipswich a share of the spoils.

Keane was part of the Sky Sports punditry team for the match between two of his old clubs with the former Republic of Ireland international spending around 20 months as Ipswich Town manager between 2009 and 2011.

And following the final whistle in the 1-1 draw in East Anglia, the Man Utd legend went over to a group of Ipswich fans – who had been shouting abuse at him – during an advert break to make his own feelings known.

It quickly turned into a heated confrontation with Keane being heard yelling in a recording: “Wait in the car park, we can have a discussion. I’ll wait for you in the car park.”

Man Utd legend Keane had a poor spell in charge of Ipswich with the Tractor Boys getting nowhere near challenging for promotion from the Championship in his time at the club, before being sacked in January 2011.

When asked by another user what sparked the altercation on Sunday evening, Finbow added: “I was reminding him that he set us back five years and ruined our football club.

“I also mentioned how he wasn’t fit to step foot anywhere near our ground [Portman Road].

“Oh, and I mentioned about him walking out on a World Cup and breaking Haaland’s leg and putting it in his autobiography. I hate the bloke, and that’s been boiling up since he got sacked all those years ago.”

Finbow continued on Facebook: “The truth hurts. I feel sick when I look at him.

“Few home truths thrown at him, he decided to bite. Very unprofessional. I’m sure he had worse when he was playing.”

United ready to hand Amorim sensational signing, could secure deal for €60m plus bonuses – report

                    united-ready-to-hand-amorim-sensational-signing,-could-secure-deal-for-e60m-plus-bonuses-–-report

Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their efforts to reunite Ruben Amorim with Sporting Lisbon sensation Geovany Quenda.

Amorim’s first game in charge of United ended in a 1-1 draw, as Ipswich Town star Omari Hutchinson spoiled the mood of the away fans by cancelling out Marcus Rashford’s 81-second opener.

The outing highlighted the Portuguese’s determination to instill his ideas, based around the 3-4-3 formation, from the get-go. In the early phases of the game, the Red Devils looked impressive, but as the night progressed, it became clear Amorim needs more time and players to properly implement his tactics.

It appears the United board are working on just that, with a report from Portugal claiming the Premier League giants have intensified their efforts to bring in a familiar face for their new manager.

According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), United have “stepped up their interest” in Quenda, after making initial contact last month.

The 17-year-old prodigy, who earned his breakthrough under Amorim, largely played as a right wing-back under him, and impressed fans and clubs across Europe with his dribbling and intensity.

Amorim showed a tremendous level of trust in the young Portuguese talent and even started him against Manchester City in the Champions League earlier this season.

Now, he reportedly wants to manage Quenda at United, and the club’s hierarchy are supposedly ready to make that happen.

It is understood the Mancunians are “preparing an offer” of €60m plus bonuses for the dynamic player. The aim is supposedly to bring him to Old Trafford next summer after he turns 18 in April 2025.

Quenda is highly-rated in Lisbon and his contract, which runs until 2027, includes a release clause, believed to be worth €100m. However, it is claimed Sporting are open to negotiating a deal with the English side for €60m plus bonuses.

Amorim deployed Amad Diallo as a right wing-back against Ipswich, and the Ivorian even earned praise from his manager for his defensive work.

However, Diallo still has a lot to learn when it comes to playing in that position and at the moment Quenda appears to be a more suitable option for the system.
