Amorim issues “frustrating” warning to fans regarding his “stuck” United players after draw vs. Ipswich

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has warned fans that they’re in for a painful period before things start to get better.

Amorim spoke to the media after United were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Marcus Rashford gave the Red Devils a very early lead but they couldn’t build on it and allowed the Tractor Boys an avenue back into the game. The hosts eventually restored parity, with Omari Hutchinson finding the back of the net just before half time.

United remain in 12th position in the Premier League, with just 16 points gained from a possible 36.

While there are some positives to take from the team’s performance, it’s clear that Amorim has a big job on his hands.

This is something Amorim seems to be fully aware of if his remarks to journalists after the final whistle are anything to go by. In his post-match press conference, the 39-year-old told fans that they will have to be patient as he works to drill his system and football tactics into his players.

Amorim also revealed that some of the United’s stars were “stuck” against Ipswich, as they were playing in a new set-up.

“It’s hard to expect anything now. It’s not a surprise but you have to see it in game. That’s why I was a little bit anxious because you cannot understand what will happen in the game. I felt that.”

“They were trying, they were thinking too much during the game and that is normal. We start very well but then we should have more possession with the ball, kept the ball and sometimes we had the ball in defence and the rest of the guys were too stuck because they were thinking, ‘where should I be?’ So this is the first point, when we make a new structure and you are so clear on that, they need time to have some fluidity in the game and I felt that. But it’s two games and I felt they did okay.”

“What I understood today is they are trying, they are really trying, they stay in the positions, they receive the information and they try to use it in the game, that is very important. Even in the difficult moments I felt they were doing the things we wanted them to do.”

“I know it’s frustrating for the fans but we are changing so much in this moment with a lot of games. We are going to suffer for a long period and we will try to win games, this will take time.”

Amorim added, “We have to win games but we could lose if it was not for Onana. So I think we have to understand that and think and be pragmatic that these guys had two days to train to change so much. They are thinking too much because things are so different. Some details, they used to pass the ball and go forward. Even the centre backs. Now they have to go back.”

“These type of things they start going forward and they have to think too much. Dalot used to do it, pass the ball to centre backs, go inside, play as a midfielder, now he has to stick to this position. It’s hard for the players in three days to cope with everything but we forget about the new idea. I think that’s why I was brought here in the middle of the season and we try to cope with the things they are used to doing.”

He cautioned, “Next year, in the same stage we will be here with the same problems. Or we start now, we risk a little bit, we suffer a little bit and in the next year we will be better at this point so we have to risk it a little bit. They are thinking too much because we are changing too much with two trainings now without space to improve in training.”

“Everybody knows that we have a problem now with the centre backs but they are three defenders, two midfielders, two wingers, two No.10s and one striker. But you change if you play Bruno Fernandes in the same position as Garnacho, it’s a completely different game.”

“When we want to listen to a lot of you guys that Manchester United doesn’t have a structure, we will have a situation of you see a structure and you will say that but, ‘oh it’s not fluid’. This is like steps.”

Amorim explained that when the players understand his structure and his system’s demands, then they will perform much better.

He called for time but also noted that victories are important and will not become a second priority.

Amorim pinpoints three urgent areas of improvement after United’s disappointing draw vs. Ipswich

      amorim-pinpoints-three-urgent-areas-of-improvement-after-united’s-disappointing-draw-vs.-ipswich

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has highlighted three things that his players urgently need to improve on, following the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

United travelled to Portman Road to face Ipswich, in what was Amorim’s first game as United boss.

Marcus Rashford and Omari Hutchninso traded first-half goals to ensure the points were evenly shared. The Red Devils remain in 12th position in the Premier League standings, having gained just 16 points from a possible 36.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Amorim pinpointed United’s poor decision-making as something that dearly cost the team against the Tractor Boys.

The Portuguese coach also spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live and insisted that his players must improve physically, technically and tactically.

He remarked, “It was a tough match. We started very well but then we should have had more of the ball, more spells of possession, and we gave the ball away too much.”

“The second half we didn’t play very well but we controlled the game better. We created better than Ipswich but we have to find more time to work with the players because we can do much better. They are very good players, but we have to improve physically, technically and tactically, and we need time to do that.”

“If you go to every top player who have had tough moments then it is normal [to forget how good they are]. When they feel fine with the new idea they will feel better for sure.”

He told BBC Sport, “Not a good result but it is a tough league with high intensity. We started very well but should have had more of the ball. But we are learning.”

On the players adapting to his formation, Amorim remarked, “It was really hard for them, they were thinking what to do, it was not fluid which is normal after to just two training sessions but they tried hard. They have so much space to improve. But after a draw you never feel the good things. So I am really happy because they tried but they can do so much better.”

He explained that United worked on the early goal, which came about as a result of Rashford tapping in a brilliant cross from Amad Diallo.

One player who earned praise from Amorim is Noussair Mazraoui. “We don’t have too many centre-backs so we have to adapt some players. I thought Noussair Mazraoui did very well. He is so smart and is so important for us. He can play anywhere and that kind of player is crucial for our future.”

When asked about his first taste of the Premier League, Amorim responded, “It is a great environment, a great spectacle. But when the game starts it is like I am back in Portugal or the third division. I am so focused everything is the same.”

“You guys are so lucky to have the best league in the world. I am really happy to be here but today I don’t feel much because I like to win games.”

114 passes, 91% completion, 16 duels: all-action defender put it all on the line for Amorim in 1-1 Ipswich draw

        114-passes,-91%-completion,-16-duels:-all-action-defender-put-it-all-on-the-line-for-amorim-in-1-1-ipswich-draw

Tough-tackling Noussair Mazraoui was the pick of Manchester United’s defenders as they laboured to a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge.

The Moroccan lined up on the right of a back three, accompanied by Matthijs de Ligt and Jonny Evans, and took to the role like a duck to water.

No player saw more of the ball, with the 27-year-old taking 127 touches – 41 more than anyone else on the pitch.

And he made the most of it, making a huge 114 passes with an impressive 91% success rate and supplying one key pass.

A lot of his passes were short and intricate, as United looked to build from the back, but he showed his versatility with 10 long balls, six of which found their man.

Amorim has spoken at length about his desire for intensity on the pitch, and Mazraoui seemed to be playing with that in mind.

His all-action display also saw him take on 16 duels, more than anyone else on the pitch, and he came out on top 11 times.

Mazraoui, who has played as a right-back for much of his time at United, may have expected to start at right wing-back.

That role was instead filled by Amad Diallo, who linked up well with the former Bayern Munich man.

Between them they caused real problems down Ipswich’s left side, attempting three and five dribbles respectively; each had two successes.

His attacking exploits saw him fouled twice but he gave as good as he got, making two fouls himself.

Amorim will be hoping to see more centre-backs returning to fitness, with Leny Yoro of particular interest, but Mazraoui gave an excellent showing to the new boss and has done enough to start there again.

Amorim handed stark warning about just how big a job he faces at Man United after Ipswich draw

          amorim-handed-stark-warning-about-just-how-big-a-job-he-faces-at-man-united-after-ipswich-draw

Nothing we’ve seen or heard of Ruben Amorim over the years suggests a figure daft enough to have been in any doubt about the scale of the task that awaits him at Manchester United. But it was still nice of the players to show him so clearly in what ended up being a pretty scruffy and even lucky 1-1 draw at Ipswich.

We’re not quite sure we’d call scoring an early goal at Ipswich truly qualifies as ‘utopian’ or ‘staggering’ or ‘beyond his wildest dreams’ as the never knowingly undramatic Peter Drury claimed. But it was still good, wasn’t it?

It was also, very obviously, a very Ruben Amorim goal. Amad Diallo’s run with the ball from right wing-back was ideal, as was the run from Marcus Rashford without the ball to get across the keeper and apply the finishing touch.

Given the way United have struggled for goals up to this point, we did start to wonder if perhaps Amorim really is a magician. And yet… that was it. United offered next to nothing further after that one shining moment.

For a team who scored an actual goal after 81 seconds to end the 90 minutes with an xG of less than one seems distinctly sub-optimal.

It has to be a concern that United’s most important player for the remaining 88 minutes of the game after that start was Andre Onana. United’s keeper was excellent and had to be, twice making unlikely saves to deny Liam Delap.

We know Amorim is going to play with his three centre-backs with wing-backs, but we also know that it probably isn’t going to end up being the players we saw in those positions . There are obvious flaws all over this team in this shape, and it’s going to take time to fix it all. This is all obvious stuff, but it was still jarring to see just how uncertain and unconvincing United appeared.

We’re not sure Casemiro and Christian Eriksen has much long-term potential as Amorim’s midfield double-pivot given the mobile types he liked to use there for Sporting, and the wing-backs are a work in progress.

Noussair Mazraoui strikes us a player with both the necessary technical ability and footballing intelligence to make a passable success of himself at wing-back on either flank, but Amad certainly represents more of a punt.

We saw the good with the goal, and then the bad for the first of Delap’s two clear chances after Leif Davis was allowed to make almost unhindered progress down the Ipswich left.

There’s no inherent reason why Amorim can’t, in time, get it all working. But it is clearly going to take a long time and plenty of new players. That £200m spent in the summer on Erik Ten Hag players really does look an absolute folly now. Especially the chunk of it spent on Joshua Zirkzee, bless him.

One way or another, United are going to be unrecognisable in six months’ time. And probably for the better. But while some players are learning on a job they may be able to make a go of, there are clearly others now just marking time. And United themselves are likely to feel that way until at least January.

The futility of analysing the team in the interim is so obvious that it left Jamie Redknapp philosophically questioning the entire concept of punditry. It was lucky Ed Sheeran turned up just in time to prevent the former Liverpool and England midfielder experiencing a genuine epiphany.

Ruben Amorim was right in the middle of Speaking Well, I Thought about the job ahead of him at United and deserves a deal of credit for not just telling Sky to shove their interview when it was so rudely and weirdly interrupted by a pop star who simply had no choice but to say hello to Redknapp in the middle of a live interview with the Manchester United manager.

It was not the first thing to test Amorim’s patience today, and it won’t be the last over the days and weeks ahead.

Sheeran was also quite comfortably the least interesting thing about Ipswich today. It was inevitable that, whatever happened, the focus would land on the visitors today and their latest reboot, but it must be noted Ipswich were excellent.

The win at Spurs before the international break was no fluke and had been coming for some time, and they should probably have taken all three points here. The biggest compliment one can pay Kieran McKenna and his side is the fact they don’t really play like a newly promoted side. There’s a canniness and nous about their play that feels more like a team that’s already survived a relegation scrap or two.

Perhaps their rock-solid and often enormously enterprising performance here looked better for coming immediately after the maddening naivety of Southampton’s generosity against Liverpool. But there is clearly something about this Ipswich team.

It would have been easy to have been overwhelmed and consumed by the sheer quantity of narrative around the place here, especially after that goal. But not a bit of it. Ipswich simply dusted themselves down and set about being the better team for the remaining 88 minutes.

They remain in the bottom three for now, but the idea that there are three teams with less about them than Ipswich is an increasingly convincing one.

It will be quite some time before we can even begin drawing any kind of similar conclusion about Amorim’s United.

Amorim pinpoints United’s main problem in draw vs. Ipswich that “can’t be coached at this level”

            amorim-pinpoints-united’s-main-problem-in-draw-vs.-ipswich-that-“can’t-be-coached-at-this-level”

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has highlighted Manchester United’s poor decision-making as one of their main problems in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Sunday.

United made their way to Portman Road to take on Kieran McKenna’s men, in what was Amorim’s first game as club boss.

The Portuguese coach got off to a fairytale start, as Marcus Rashford tapped in a superb cross from Amad Diallo.

However, Ipswich steadily grew into the game, capitalising on some poor moments from United, and eventually got their reward just before the break. Omari Hutchninson’s effort deflected off Noussair Mazraoui to head into the back of the net.

Both sides had chances in the second half but neither could score and eventually had to settle for a share of the points.

After the match, Amorim spoke to Sky Sports and gave his verdict on the match.

He lambasted some of his players’ decision-making, insisting that the 3-4-3 formation is not the main problem. He also said that he needs more time in the training ground to drill his tactics and methods into the squad.

Amorim told Sky, “The players were thinking too much. It is a tough match, we lost some balls without pressure. You have to control the ball, the tempo of the game. We can not do it at the moment but they tried. They are really, really trying.”

“Decision-making is a concern, you can’t coach them at this level. We are doing some things not in the right moment and that’s what we have to address.”

“The 3-4-3 is not the concern, the understanding of the game is what we have to improve.”

The 39-year-old added, “We will have problems, the players will be confused sometimes, but by this time next year, I promise you we won’t have the same struggles.”

“This week I spoke [in interviews] more than four years in Sporting. I just want to work with my players nothing more, but I understand it’s a different game here.”

“If we try to just win games and don’t risk anything in this moment, I guarantee next year at the same stage we will have the same problems. We have to address the new idea and try to be better.”

“My players were thinking too much, you could see it” 🧠

He also pointed out the low physical levels as something that needs to be improved.

Amorim does not have the personnel he needs, United superstar does not look like he is a natural fit

              amorim-does-not-have-the-personnel-he-needs,-united-superstar-does-not-look-like-he-is-a-natural-fit

Manchester United began the Ruben Amorim era with a hard-fought point against Ipswich Town away at Portman Road on Sunday.

It was the visitors who took the lead within 90 seconds with an excellent run from Amad Diallo leading to a Marcus Rashford goal. But since then, it was mostly the home side who created the better chances.

Omari Hutchinson equalised right before half-time and the result could have been a lot different if Andre Onana had not pulled off a number of brilliant saves.

The Portuguese would have known that he had a huge job on his hands but the scale pretty much became apparent on Sunday. The players are yet to grab what he’s trying to tell them, which was expected.

              Personnel does not suit Amorim

But whether he has the personnel to play in this manner remains a concern on first viewing. The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss wants more control but this team prefer playing off the cuff as seen during Erik ten Hag’s chaotic era.

The Red Devils have an abundance of wingers but not the right set of midfielders or strikers for the new coach’s system.

Both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen did not look comfortable at all, struggling to track back when losing the ball and lacking the engine to play as the staggered 6s in the coach’s system.

Amad tried hard but the Tractor Boys got at United whenever the right wing-back was asked to defend. And Rashford, despite his goal, looked well off the pace for most of his time on the pitch.

And Amorim is not exactly blessed with quality as seen from Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee’s cameos. But it will be interesting to see where Bruno Fernandes fits into all of this.

Ever since his arrival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Portuguese always has played a free role behind the striker, encouraged to play his high-risk style.

              Who fits where?

But with Amorim, he prefers control and with a specific role out wider than his normal position, the captain was not his fluent self.

Fernandes was far from bad but when Kobbie Mainoo is fit, he is likely to partner Manuel Ugarte while Amad should play further forward, especially at home.

Maybe Alejandro Garnacho could miss out on the other wing but the Portugal international does not look a natural fit currently.

And the intent to try and go on to try and force things was poor even the head coach was quite brave with his changes.

But at least, despite the disappointing display, it was a point from his first game unlike Ten Hag and the team have maintained their unbeaten run since the Dutchman’s sacking.

3/10 ground duels won, 100% aerial duels lost, 1 big chance missed: Amorim has his hands full with this United star

                3/10-ground-duels-won,-100%-aerial-duels-lost,-1-big-chance-missed:-amorim-has-his-hands-full-with-this-united-star

Manchester United were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw in Ruben Amorim’s first match as head coach.

United got a fairytale start to proceedings, as Marcus Rashford grabbed an early opener. However, Ipswich steadily got into the game and were rewarded moments before the break, as Omari Hutchninson’s effort deflected off Noussair Mazraoui to head into the back of the net.

Both sides eventually had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Amorim’s men had 60% possession in comparison to Ipswich’s 40% share of the ball. The visitors managed just four shots on target from their total 11 cracks at goals. Ipswich on the other hand, also fired 11 total shots, with six of these requiring Andre Onana to intervene.

United put together 644 passes with a pass accuracy of 87%. The Tractor Boys strung 421 passes with a success rate of 82%.

Many of United’s players were very underwhelming, including Alejandro Garnacho. Garnacho was deployed in a left-wing-back role and he struggled to impress.

During the time he was on the pitch before his late substitution, the Argentine registered two shots, one on-target and the other off-target. He also missed one big chance – almost immediately after the restart – that could have put United in the driving seat once again.

He embarked on one dribble, which he failed to complete.

Garnacho touched the ball on 42 occasions and found his teammates with 24 of the 27 passes he attempted.

He failed to make a key pass or put in a cross. He attempted to connect with three long balls but only found his target once.

The Carrington academy graduate struggled with the demands of a largely unfamiliar wing-back position, winning just three of the 10 ground duels he delved into and losing the single aerial challenge he was required to contest.

He lost possession of the ball eight times and committed two fouls. He was dribbled past once.

Garnacho made one clearance and as many tackles.

                (Stats obtained from Sofascore)

If Amorim is to persist with the 20-year-old on that part of the pitch, then it’s abundantly clear that there is a lot of work to be done on the training ground to get him accustomed to it.

Four things we learnt as United limp to drab 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town

                  four-things-we-learnt-as-united-limp-to-drab-1-1-draw-with-ipswich-town

Manchester United took on Ipswich Town at Portman Road to kick off the Ruben Amorim era on Sunday evening.

Lining up in a 3-4-3 formation, Andre Onana started in nets with Matthijs de Ligt, Jonny Evans and Noussair Mazraoui starting as the three centre backs.

Interestingly, Amad Diallo took up the spot at right wing back and Noussair Mazraoui started at left wing back. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro started in the midfield pivot.

The front three consisted of Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

Here are four things we learnt from the match.

Rashford makes mark in new role

Amorim decided to employ Rashford as his number nine and not Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee.

The Englishman got off to the perfect start with a poacher’s finish after wonderful work down the right from Amad Diallo.

It was his fifth strike of the season and he will hope that he can now get a run of games closer to the goal as the new head coach’s first choice number nine.

He had a quiet first half as the team struggled to create much. The hosts took charge of the half in spite of United’s perfect start. He was eventually taken off later in the second half after failing to add to his first half tally.

Still, it will give United’s number 10 a shot of confidence as he aims to return to something like the form of the 2022/2023 season.

                  Where does Bruno Fernandes fit?

Fernandes was sensational under Ruud van Nistelrooy and has probably been the team’s best player since signing in 2020.

However, he had a very quiet first half where he could barely influence proceedings at all.

Amorim’s 3-4-3 does not have an obvious fit for Fernandes as the players behind the striker need to create some width and the Portuguese is certainly more comfortable closer to goal in a more central position.

United’s captain is an intelligent player and incredibly hard-working, so it would be foolish to bet against him finding a role in Amorim’s team but as of now, it is far from clear where he fits in the puzzle.

Amad Diallo can’t play wing back in the Premier League

Amad has been one of the highlights of the season and has impressed since being given a more prominent role since Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.

He was wonderful in Rashford’s opening goal and most United fans would agree he should certainly have a role in Amorim’s starting eleven.

However, the jury is certainly out on whether that should be in the wing back position.

The Ivorian certainly works hard off the ball and puts in a shift but his performance defensively in the first half exposed his light frame against Premier League attackers.

He was caught out numerous times by the Ipswich attack and will undoubtedly be better suited closer to goal, perhaps in one of Amorim’s two number 10 positions.

                  Andre Onana continues to impress

The Cameroonian keeper has had his critics since joining United but he kept up his outstanding form this season.

There was nothing he could do for Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike for the Tractor Boys but he made two highly impressive stops either side of half time.

Both saves displayed great reflexes and anticipation as he kept Amorim’s side in the game.

His return from the precipice has been impressive and only speaks to the mental strength he has as he has become one of United’s most important players in recent months.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.

Manchester United were held to an entertaining 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday evening.

It was a momentous occasion for Man United, with new manager Ruben Amorim taking to the touchline for the first time since arriving at the club on 11 November. United fans were no doubt curious to see how the Portuguese manager would fare in his first outing in his new role.

Unfortunately, it was a moment in which United lost their concentration that cost Amorim his first victory on his debut.

It was a dream start for Amorim’s team, with Marcus Rashford scoring within 90 seconds. Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes enjoyed a slick one-two, with Amad on the receiving end of the ball behind the halfway line. Amad then burst forward, threading a through ball to Rashford in the centre of the box, with the striker thumping the ball into the back of the net.

Six minutes in, it appeared as if Amad would make his second assist when he sprinted down the right flank and pass the ball back to Eriksen in the middle. The Dane’s long-range effort breezed wide.

A few minutes later, it was the home side’s turn to attack. Sammie Szmodics got on the end of a threatening cross, taking a snapshot on the edge of the box that Andre Onana expertly saved at full stretch.

For much of the opening stages, United looked slick and confident under Amorim. The team dominated the ball, playing an intricate web of passes. In the 18th minute, Alejandro Garnacho passed the ball to Bruno Fernandes in the centre, who decided to cut the ball back to Garnacho. The Argentine tried to curl in a shot from the edge of the box, only for it to veer wide.

In the 28th minute, United gave away a free kick from a dangerous position when Jonny Evans brought down Liam Delap on the edge of the box. While Omari Hutchinson’s free-kick was on target, Onana was able to catch the shot while remaining rooted to the spot.

The hosts won a corner, with Hutchinson unleashing a volley from close range that Diogo Dalot bravely blocked. That was arguably the underdogs’ best scoring chance of the match so far.

Dalot tried his luck at scoring seven minutes from half-time; however, his attempt was off target.

Moments later, Ipswich were within touching distance of equalising. In a lapse of concentration from United’s defence, an unmarked Delap raced into the box, taking a shot off a through ball just metres from the goal line that Onana expertly saved with his leg. it was only thanks to the Cameroonian’s breathtaking heroics that United maintained their lead.

In the 43rd minute, Ipswich got the goal they deserved. Hutchinson took a left-footed shot from distance that glided into the top left corner. United desperately needed to step things up again to have a shot at grabbing three points.

On the stroke of half-time, Delap slammed into Noussair Mazraoui as the pair jostled for possession. It was a malicious-looking shove from Delap, with Mazraoui rising to his feet and squaring up to the striker in frustration. While players from both teams jumped in to dissolve the situation, the Ipswich striker managed to walk away without a warning from the referee.

It was an interesting half of football, with plenty of attacking intent from both sides. Still, Amorim needed to enforce defensive discipline in order to prevent further Ipswich goals. Perhaps a few substitutions would have also come in handy, with Casemiro and Jonny Evans both looking fatigued as they made their way down the tunnel.

Moments after the restart, United launched a blistering counter, with Fernandes threading the ball to Garnacho, whose left-footed strike was parried by the goalkeeper. A promising start to the second half by a determined-looking United team.

51 minutes in, Wes Burns slotted a through ball into the box, with Delap tipping the ball goalward. It was another fine save from Onana that kept the scores level.

Garnacho sprinted into the box with the ball moments later, however, he was dispossessed with a sliding tackle. Fernandes then took an opportune shot that was blocked.

Amorim decided to bring on some fresh legs in the 55th minute, with Luke Shaw replacing Jonny Evans for his first appearance since February. Manuel Ugarte replaced a tired-looking Casemiro.

With 23 minutes to go, Amorim decided to step up his team’s attacking efforts by bringing on both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. They replaced Rashford and Eriksen.

Zirkzee decided to try his luck in front of the goal. However, his shot sailed high over the crossbar.

With little over 12 minutes to play, United were handed a free-kick from just outside the box. Fernandes squared up to take it, however his shot floated just inches wide of the upright.

Mazraoui went down following a head clash, thereby bringing a halt to the match. After receiving medical attention on the pitch, he was able to return to action.

With five minutes of regular time to play, Mason Mount came on for Garnacho.

A minute later, Ipswich were on the attack. Jack Clarke sent a cross to fellow substitute Conor Chaplin, whose shot was expertly saved by Onana.

After four minutes of stoppage time, neither side could find a breakthrough as the referee called time on an entertaining albeit frustrating draw for United.

Perhaps the team will need more time to acclimate to Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation in order to find their groove.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Fernandes, Rashford, Eriksen, Amad, Garnacho, Casemiro, Dalot, Evans
Subs: Shaw, Ugarte, Hojlund, Zirkzee, Mount

Jonny Evans had a howler, but this star put in zero effort for Amorim vs Ipswich

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Ipswich Town, in what was Ruben Amorim’s first match as the club’s new head coach. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 9 – Ensured United remained in the game with some very crucial saves. Produced two brilliant match-saving stops in either half to deny Liam Delap. Also thwarted Conor Chaplin late on.

Noussair Mazraoui 6 – Cruising in the right-centre-back role until his unfortunate deflection for Ipswich’s equaliser. Carried on steadily and helped United clinch a draw.

Matthijs de Ligt 6 –  Decent performance but Delap got the beating of him on one or two occasions.

Jonny Evans 3 – Struggled at times with the pace of the game. Recklessly gave the ball away to Omari Hutchinson at some point in the first half, leading to an Ipswich attack. No surprise he was among the first to be taken off.

Amad Diallo 7 – Superb run down the right to register the assist for Rashford’s goal. Relatively did well in a largely unfamiliar wing-back role.

Casemiro 2 – Just poor and ineffective. Almost a nothing performance really. Didn’t provide any solidity in the middle of the park and also didn’t contribute offensively nearly as much as he usually does. Like Evans, unsurprising that he was also among the first set of stars to be substituted, even before the hour mark.

Christian Eriksen 5 – Decent on the ball and made some nice contributions but somewhat a liability off it. Just not enough intensity.

Diogo Dalot 4 – Seems like his struggles in recent weeks remain ongoing. Tried to get forward but didn’t contribute when he did. He and Garnacho didn’t link up well down the left, rendering United ineffective on that side of the pitch.

Bruno Fernandes 4 – Poor and very lacklustre in the first half when operating on the right of attack. Wasn’t involved as much. Slight improvement when he was shifted into central areas.

Alejandro Garnacho 4 – Anaemic and uninspiring performance. Former teammate Alex Tuanzebe had his number throughout the first half. Tried to switch to the opposite flank in the second period but was equally ineffective there. Wasted one or two promising opportunities on the counter.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Scored a very early goal to set United on their way. Dramatically faded after that and didn’t offer much else.

                      Substitutes

Luke Shaw 6 – Solid when he came on after a lengthy period on the sidelines. Much better than Evans as he slotted into the left-centre-back position.

Manuel Ugarte 4 – Didn’t help sway the midfield battle.

Rasmus Hojlund 5 – Worked hard when he came on.

Joshua Zirkee 5 – Some nice touches and interceptions but not really dangerous.

Mason Mount 5 – On the pitch for a very limited period.
