Amorim wants ‘players like Roy Keane’ as Man Utd boss excuses ‘wasting time’ analysing Ten Hag

Ruben Amorim has told Gary Neville that he ‘truly believes Manchester United will succeed’ under his management.

Amorim gets his Man Utd tenure underway against Ipswich Town on Sunday.

The former Sporting head coach replaced Erik ten Hag earlier this month after the Dutchman was sacked for a miserable start to 2024/25.

Red Devils legend Neville sat down with Amorim ahead of his debut and the Portuguese is under no illusions that it will be an easy job to get the club back fighting for the Premier League title.

“The first impression is that it’s so big, with a lot of departments,” Amorim said. “I came from a big club in a small country. Here is a different world.

“You have a lot to do. You are not just a coach. You have to be something more.

“So it’s a little bit different, but I think I’m prepared for that.

“You feel the weight of the history and I want to be part of that. If we win here, it will be different than in every club in England, you can feel that but you also understand that it’s going to be tough.

“And it’s Manchester United. It doesn’t matter the last years.

“We will have really hard moments but in the end, I truly believe that we are going to succeed.”

On where previous managers went wrong, Amorim said: “I will not try to find out the right thing to do or try to find out what was missing with Erik ten Hag, with Jose Mourinho, with Louis van Gaal.

“I will not try that because I think it’s a waste of time. They chose me because they saw something and I do something in a clear way.

“I really don’t know what the (other managers) missed here but I know I will do my thing, my way and try to find out what is missing in my way of seeing football.”

On getting Man Utd playing further up the pitch, Amorim told Neville: “First thing, I think we have to be better athletes. That is something that you can acknowledge when we are here and we see the data.

“When I say fitter, it’s not being thinner or anything about that. It’s the data. You have to understand the data to press high, what is the average metres that you have to run, the sprints.

“You have all this data and you have to cope with that. So you already know your goal is to reach that. You can run a lot but if you don’t understand the game, it doesn’t matter. But the first point to press high, you have to be very fit and you have to cope with the demands of pressing high.

“The problem is with the ball. I think we lose the ball too fast. We win the ball, we lose the ball. And you cannot press high all the time. With the ball, we can press better. So the focus this week also was in that part.

“If you don’t lose the ball, you can push higher. If you are higher, you can press better. So it’s like a snowball. Everything is connected.”

Amorim also revealed that he would love to pick the brains of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson and former club captain Roy Keane.

He said: “Roy Keane was a massive player and I like players with character. I think they can improve. It was not just what Roy Keane did on the pitch, it was the way he influenced the others. I think that is very important in one player.

“You must have this kind of player in the big clubs. I hope we’ll have in the future players like Roy Keane.

“Sir Alex Ferguson, you want to ask so many things. I think he will talk about horses. I don’t understand anything about horses. But it will be amazing to meet that kind of character.”

Shock swap deal on the cards between United and Serie A giants, Amorim could land €100m former Man City target – report

      shock-swap-deal-on-the-cards-between-united-and-serie-a-giants,-amorim-could-land-e100m-former-man-city-target-–-report

Manchester United’s need for midfield reinforcements is clear to see with their current options including two players over the age of 32.

Christian Eriksen has enjoyed a fine personal campaign thus far, seeing a major rise in minutes under former boss Erik ten Hag, while also emerging as the club’s second top-scorer this term.

The Dane’s passing ability remains unmatched but Ruben Amorim demands intensity from his players, something the former Tottenham Hotspur man will find hard to match given his age.

And Casemiro, who really shone under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also on the same boat and the Portuguese is reportedly open to moving both on in January.

      Midfield reinforcements

And they could get hands on the ideal replacement if Gazzetta dello Sport is to be believed. It is no secret at this stage that Juventus want struggling United forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Thiago Motta’s fascination with his former protege means the Turin-based outfit are in the lead though other surprising suitors remain in the race.

But owing to their financial situation, the Bianconeri are in no position to pay what the Old Trafford side will demand for the striker.

And the outlet have suggested that Juve could look to offload Douglas Luiz in return for Zirkzee, something that would suit both parties.

The Brazilian has endured a nightmare spell in Serie A since his summer move, starting only twice while suffering a recent muscle injury.

The former Aston Villa man was a former Manchester City target and was valued at €100 million but could make the move to the red side of Manchester if both parties agree to the shocking swap deal.

      Zirkzee-Luiz swap

“What can happen in January is no longer a secret, also due to the needs of Juve who must make the market to fix the defense and attack with a reduced budget.

“Instead, with the help of the Brazilian’s entourage (the same as Zirkzee) they could try to build the road for an exchange on equal terms with another player who wants a change of scenery during the season.”

Luiz can play all across the midfield and has experience of playing in the English top-flight. His age and profile makes him the perfect fit for both INEOS and Amorim.

But a lot of ifs and buts remain and it will be interesting to see if such a move actually pans out.

Amorim’s hopes of reuniting with former Sporting protege perfect for his system dashed by CL giants – Fabrizio Romano

        amorim’s-hopes-of-reuniting-with-former-sporting-protege-perfect-for-his-system-dashed-by-cl-giants-–-fabrizio-romano

Manchester United’s need for a left wing-back is pretty apparent owing to the poor injury records of both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

While the Englishman missed over 30 games last term, the Dutch star was sidelined for the whole campaign and only recently returned to full training including playing in an U21 game.

With the duo still sidelined, the Old Trafford side had lined up with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui alternating in that position while centre-back Lisandro Martinez had also been tried there by the former manager.

With Erik ten Hag no longer at the helm, a tactical change is on the cards with Ruben Amorim preferring to play three at the back while utilising wing-backs instead of full-backs.

        Mendes, a wing-back target

As seen during training, the Portuguese feels Shaw is best suited as the left-sided centre-back, a role he had excelled in during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign.

And the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss will have to be careful with Malacia’s minutes so as to avoid further complications. That is why The Peoples Person relayed that the Red Devils are eyeing Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes.

The Portuguese star’s contract in Paris is valid until 2026, and Amorim had directed INEOS to try and land his former Sporting protege.

However, the Parisian giants have no wish of relinquishing the 22-year-old and as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, PSG have offered the left wing-back a new deal and a positive conclusion is expected soon.

His new deal is likely to be valid until 2029, which would likely bring to an end United’s pursuit of the Portugal international.

“Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on the agreement with Nuno Mendes over new deal!,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

PSG close to agreeing new deal

“Final details being sorted as the new contract will be valid until June 2029, part of Luis Campos plans as PSG trust Nuno for the future. Hakimi and Nuno, both extending.”

This will not be the best of news for Amorim though the 20-time English league champions have other targets in mind including Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

However, both of those deals are also complicated and INEOS will hope that Amorim can either get Malacia and Shaw to fire or hopefully, promote Harry Amass into the senior squad.

United are expected to strengthen in that area in January with former academy graduate Alvaro Fernandez a candidate as well with the club having the option of triggering their buyback clause.

European giant’s “urgent” need to sell opens door for United to pounce on CL-winning midfielder – report

          european-giant’s-“urgent”-need-to-sell-opens-door-for-united-to-pounce-on-cl-winning-midfielder-–-report

Manchester United could capitalise on Bayern Munich’s “urgent” need to raise funds to push through a deal for midfielder Leon Goretzka.

As reported by Florian Plettenberg, the Bavarian giants are desperate to complete the transfer of Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz, but need to sell before they can buy.

The German journalist notes that “a move abroad to a top European club” is more likely than a move within the Bundesliga for the 29-year-old.

🚨🔴 One reason why Leon #Goretzka is being considered for sale is Bayern’s urgent need for funds to complete the transfer of Florian #Wirtz.

At present, a move abroad to a top European club seems more likely for Goretzka than a transfer within the Bundesliga.

          — Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) November 22, 2024

The only such club named is United, whose interest in midfield reinforcements is no secret; just two days ago Plettenberg himself revealed links to Atalanta’s Ederson.

He explains that there are “already interested clubs”, and that the Red Devils “still have him on their radar”.

But, crucially, “no price tag has been set yet”, meaning a deal would need to be thrashed out and Bayern’s “urgent need for funds” would doubtless see the German side drive a hard bargain.

Goretzka has had a frustrating campaign so far, with his time as an undisputed starter at Bayern seemingly at an end.

It took until Friday for him to complete a full 90 minutes this season, when he picked up an assist in a 3-0 win over FC Augsburg.

Should United make a move for him, he would join Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui who swapped the Allianz Arena for Old Trafford in the summer.

Whether in January or next June, it seems inevitable that Ruben Amorim will look to add to his options in the middle of the park, with the futures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, in particular, up in the air.

As well as age not being on their side, the pair’s suitability for Amorim’s intense style of play has been questioned.

And as he approaches his 30th birthday, Goretzka’s signing would imply INEOS moving away from apparent preference for youth.

He would, however, bring a wealth of experience gained from winning, amongst other honours, the Champions League and five Bundesliga titles.

“Thrown their hat into the ring”: Surprise PL suitors emerge for United flop Amorim is desperate to shift in January – report

            “thrown-their-hat-into-the-ring”:-surprise-pl-suitors-emerge-for-united-flop-amorim-is-desperate-to-shift-in-january-–-report

The form of Manchester United’s strikers, who have scored only three goals between them, is a huge concern with INEOS hoping Ruben Amorim can work his magic on the duo like he did with Viktor Gyokeres in Lisbon.

Despite his poor recent form, there is still hope for Rasmus Hojlund, who had emerged as the club’s top scorer last season and has shown glimpses of his undeniable talent. He also seems to fit with what the Portuguese wants.

Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has been a major disappointment with plenty of reports detailing how former boss Erik ten Hag did not endorse his signing.

And now, Amorim has also taken a dim view of his abilities and as per CaughtOffside, he is trying to offload the Netherlands international as soon as the transfer window opens.

            Zirkzee’s future

Despite only netting once this season, the 23-year-old is still attracting plenty of interest with Juventus in the lead, owing to the Thiago Motta connection.

Apart from the Turin-based outfit, AC Milan, who were eyeing Zirkzee in the summer, are once again interested, as are their cross-town rivals Inter. Napoli have also entered the race.

Surprisingly, the former Bayern Munich starlet also has interest from within the Premier League with Aston Villa prepared to throw their hat into the ring. Another surprise addition is Amorim’s former club, Sporting Lisbon.

“According to well-placed CaughtOffside sources, 23-year-old Dutch striker, Joshua Zirkzee, is attracting a lot of interest in the transfer market due to his current situation at the club.

“Juventus are understood to be one of the favourites to take the Dutchman to Turin, given his previous relationship at Bologna with Thiago Motta, now the manager for the Bianconeri of course.

“He would be an alternative in their attack, though Napoli are another Italian top-flight side to at least have him on their transfer list to evaluate his skillset.

“CaughtOffside sources have also indicated that both Milan clubs are keen on the player, with Amorim’s former club, Sporting, thought to be interested in making a move when the time is right.

            Surprise teams in the race

“In the unlikely event that Zirkzee wants to continue his footballing education in the Premier League, Aston Villa have thrown their hat into the ring.”

Zirkzee’s biggest issue is that he is not an out-and-out No 9 and while he can play in multiple positions, at this point what United need most is a ruthless finisher.

The Red Devils were open to keeping the Dutch star for more time to allow him to try and adapt but the forward is struggling and wants out.

Given his age and relatively low cost, the 20-time English league champions are unlikely to take a hit on their initial investment with the player’s market value currently standing at €50 million according to Transfermarkt.

Amorim to include talented 16-yo in squad vs. Ipswich after he impressed in training – report

              amorim-to-include-talented-16-yo-in-squad-vs.-ipswich-after-he-impressed-in-training-–-report

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly named academy youngster Godwill Kukonki in his matchday squad vs. Ipswich Town.

Amorim is set to officially take charge of his first game as United boss, since his appointment on November 1 as Erik ten Hag’s direct replacement.

The Portuguese coach has impressed during his media obligations, displaying a blend of charm, charisma and personality that his predecessor somewhat lacked.

He has on more than one occasion, declared his intention to nurture United’s youngsters and help continue the club’s rich and extensive culture of bringing them through the ranks.

A few days ago, it emerged that Amorim included 16-year-old Kukonki in first-team training, the first time the teenager was afforded such an opportunity.

According to Academy Scoop, Amorim has gone a step further and named Kukonki in United’s matchday squad to take on Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich a few hours from now.

Academy Scoop wrote on X, “Exclusive: Ruben Amorim has included 16 year-old defender Godwill Kukonki in his first ever match-day squad to face Ipswich this afternoon.”

“Kukonki who joined United at just five, signing his scholarship deal in the summer, has impressed the Portuguese coach in training.”

This has also been confirmed by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Standing at 6’5″, Kukonki has been a regular presence in the Under-18s, where he has impressed. He was handed some minutes back in October in the Under-21s when they meet Forest Green Rovers.

A left-footed defender, the teenager has demonstrated very promising signs of his technical and physical prowess – attributes that will undoubtedly hold him in good stead when making the transition from youth level to senior football.

Ipswich vs. United kicks off at 16:30 BST.

Manchester United defender was embarrassed by cult hero ‘rockstar’

                manchester-united-defender-was-embarrassed-by-cult-hero-‘rockstar’

In the ’60s and ’70s, every team had a dribbler, often a tricky winger, who was only in the team to break up the psychotic defending. He was usually the first to get studs down his calf and be booted up in the air but was who you paid your 75p to see in your best Brutus 28″ flares

                Pele v Bulgaria
He was the first modern player really, athletically but solidly built and blessed both with pace over a sprint and close ball control. He didn’t have a great 1966 World Cup due to injury, but he turned it on in this 2-0 win.

At one point taking the ball down the left, stopping, confronted with a defender, he injected a burst of pace to take him past before a second came over to challenge him. Pele nudged it past him into the box and crossed it. Remember a defender could perform open-heart surgery on you and not get sent off. It’s an elegant move born of quick feet, strength and remarkable change of pace. His reputation was well-earned.

                Rodney Marsh v Birmingham City
He was a player of remarkable, deft skill, capable of all sorts of goals but entertaining – remember that word when you’re slowing down videos just to prove something should’ve been a penalty – was what he did best. He would just try outrageous things. It didn’t matter if he didn’t score, it was just fun to see him try.

To complete his hat-trick in this game, he collects the ball 25 yards out, centrally, a crowd of defenders around him. He steps on the ball, rolls it back, pushes it forward, taps it and buries it, completely fooling the defenders. On top of that he looked like he played in Status Quo.

                Stan Bowles v Sunderland
QPR were a great team to watch in the mid-70s, full of pace and flair. Liverpool didn’t invent fast counter-attacking from an opposition corner, QPR were doing it in 1976. Here Sunderland take a corner. It’s headed out, I think, to Dave Thomas (himself a great socks-down winger) who sends it 50 yards down the line to Stan who cuts inside, then outside at pace and has scored before Sunderland know what hit them. Stan just played for the fun, didn’t take it too seriously and was usually in the bookies ten minutes before kick-off.

                George Best v West Ham
Yes, he was simply amazing and as good as you’ve heard. In the mid-60s he was a will-o-the-wisp who floated across the pitch with light footsteps and tremendous pace. By the 1971/72 season his powers were waning a little, but here he scored a hat-trick. The second was classic Best, coming in off the left and taking the ball left, then right, then left again, beating about four defenders, pushing it across the goal and firing it into the corner. Magical. Sad about the drink.

                Johan Cruyff v CSKA
The boy was a dancer, with the lightest of touches. The Ajax team of the early ’70s was so good and played a progressive sort of football which would have beaten most sides today. Against CSKA in the European Cup, in a 6-1 win, he played all the hits, swerving right, then dropping a shoulder to go left, throwing off defenders as he did so. Then he threw in a Cruyff turn to finally get away from the last defender, now on his backside and with twisted blood, Cruyff then pushed it wide with his right foot and passed it to a striker. More like dancing than football, plus he looked like the lead guitarist in a prog rock band.

Read more from Johnny Nic on the great Johan Cryuff

                Tony Currie v Orient
He was Sheffield United’s maverick with impressive sideburns for many years before going to Dirty Leeds. Had great balance and vision mixed with talent. Here he cuts in from the right, feigns to go left, dumps one on his backside, feigns to go right, dumps another on his backside, flicks the ball up with his toe and volleys it into the net. And it only cost 75p to go in; admittedly you’d have to watch Orient too.

                Charlie Cooke v Spurs
Part of that early ’70s Blues side that won the FA Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup. In some ways the flip side to Chopper Harris, he operated on the left wing and was a superb passer of the ball, weaving his spell for others to score.

In this game, he collects the ball initially unopposed, just over the halfway line, before burning down the wing as defenders swarm around him, trying to bully him off the ball. But with deft feet he flicks it between two, knocks it left to beat another and crosses it for Peter Osgood to head it home. Only scored 30 goals in around 370 appearances across two stretches and was born in gorgeous St. Monans in Fife, a picturesque ex-fishing village.

                Liam Brady v Coventry
A mercurial force and one of Arsenal’s best ever players. I’ve rarely seen anyone with better vision which he combined with surging pace and a left foot which would be routinely and bizarrely described as ‘a wand’, which, if my Sooty knowledge is right, is a small stick of wood.

He was one of those players who once he was running, the ball seemed stuck to his foot. In this game, he collects the ball at the back of the centre circle, sees a gap and surges forward as defenders close on him, pushing it right and left to beat them and emerges at the edge of the box free and clear to score. He played in Italy, you know.

                Michel Platini v Inter Milan
You might know him as a gravy hoovering, probably corrupt FIFA bod, but he was one of the best footballers in the world. Playing for Juventus he once ran at the defence, flicking the ball at speed past defenders, then leathered into the net. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do, including refusing free money from Sepp Blatter. That 1984 French team would kick ass today.

                Gabriel Batistuta v Manchester United
Still seems modern to me, despite being at his peak 30 years ago. He looked like a rockstar and scored incredible goals, sometimes running the length of the pitch to do so. This time the ball is played from midfield into him, he takes it 30 yards out with his back to goal, surrounded by defenders, rolls Jaap Stam, flicks it up, keeping the ball under control and absolutely belts it into the net. Not so much a dribble as a phenomenal piece of skill.

Looking at his goals now, although he was a big star at the time, he has absolutely no equal today. Even the best look worse than him.

                  “i-love-that-kid”:-amorim-says-he-has-“two-positions”-for-united-star-wowing-him-in-training

Mason Mount could be about to play a key role in Ruben Amorim’s revolution at Manchester United.

The former Chelsea man has not had a successful start to life at Old Trafford, having missed much of last season and this through injury.

Even when available, it was also not always obvious where he fit in former manager Erik ten Hag’s system, which relied on wide, fast wingers and a single number 10 in Bruno Fernandes.

However, reports this week claimed that Mount had been a stand-out star in training under Amorim and the new boss was quick to sing his praises when interviewed by club media on Friday.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” Amorim said.

“You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

The head coach was keen to point out that the 3-4-3 system he will employ could suit the 25 year old down to the ground.

“He played in this system [at Chelsea under Tuchel], so it’s perfect for him…I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”

Amorim did not specify the two positions he had in mind, but one is sure to be as one of the two inside forwards playing behind the main striker.

The other could be in central midfield, but it might also make sense to play Mount as a wing back, particularly in potentially easier games where attack is more of the focus.

Mount’s versatility and tireless energy will certainly stand him in good stead under the new coach and if he can finally put his injury problems behind him, the sky could be the limit for the England man at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim explains exactly what powers he will be given over transfers at Man United

                    ruben-amorim-explains-exactly-what-powers-he-will-be-given-over-transfers-at-man-united

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has explained what his role will be in player recruitment at Manchester United.

Previous manager Erik ten Hag was given the power of veto over transfers and in truth, for the large part of his tenure, he was allowed to select many players himself.

But with Ineos’ footballing structure now in place, led by Dan Ashworth as director of football and Jason Wilcox as technical director, Amorim’s appointment was made under the new job title of head coach, suggesting a reduced role in the contractual aspects of the club.

Asked at a recent press conference what powers he would have, Amorim was clear.

“I think it has to be all together because, if you are a coach that comes in here and already chose the players, it could be wrong because this is a football club that will be here for a long time and you, as a coach, you don’t know that.

“So you have to work – everybody together. And, for that, we have to improve the process of recruitment. The data, the profile of the players that we want. But I have to have to have a strong position on that, because I am the coach and I know how we want to play.

“I think it is all together but the final word, as you can say, should be with the manager. Not because it is your right but because it is your responsibility. Because in the end they will ask you about the results and, in the end, that comes through to me.

“I think that, all together, it’s to improve the process of recruitment and I have to understand the league – that is important – and when everything is aligned, everything is on the same page, we can buy and sell players.”

Asked specifically if it had been agreed he would have the final say on any transfer, he replied:

“I am not saying this is the final, final. But I have a great responsibility when we choose players because this is something that should be done in this way. I am the manager, the head coach, so I have to choose the players.”

It has already been reported that the Portuguese will have a limited budget to work from in upcoming transfer windows as the club navigates Profit and Sustainability Rules.

On the other hand, there will be clear areas where strengthening is necessary, especially if players coming toward the end of their contracts such as Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen are not renewed. Centre forward and left wing back are also priorities moving forward.

Man Utd academy star set for debut vs Ipswich as Antony plan rubbished: Ruben Amorim’s dream first game

                      man-utd-academy-star-set-for-debut-vs-ipswich-as-antony-plan-rubbished:-ruben-amorim’s-dream-first-game

We’re in an unsettling state of actually hoping Manchester United do well under Ruben Amorim. We’re finding it really, really hard to dislike the new Red Devils manager, try as we might.

We understand that the Old Trafford browbeating hasn’t begun and he may yet turn into a miserable curmudgeon, but he currently seems very happy to be there and keeps talking about “fun”, which is – well – fun.

We haven’t entirely lost our ABU senses – there would undeniably be significant hilarity in victory for Ipswich on Sunday – but with our Amorim fan-club hats on we’ve come up with the dream scenario in his first game as Manchester United manager.

                      Marcus Rashford hat-trick
We also retain a soft spot for Marcus Rashford despite the mad b*stard flying first class to New York to watch a basketball game in his time off rather than staying at home looking at his running stats and drinking Huel.

But guys, Gary Neville really “didn’t want ‘Neville hammers Rashford’” stories and was no doubt astonished having worked in and around football for three decades that he woke up to find ‘Neville hammers Rashford’ stories, having questioned his professionalism and called him an attention-seeker on a podcast.

We hope that such baseless besmirching of his character garners little more than an eye roll from Rashford these days, who is either a media darling or a target of rebuke – there’s no in-between. And the only way he’s going to get the media and fans onside is to start scoring goals again, because his feeding-hungry-children bit carried very little weight and if anything made his critics more angry as he needed to Focus On Football.

It looks as though Amorim is going to hand Rashford the opportunity as United’s No.9. We don’t think anyone is particularly convinced by that plan – Rashford and Amorim included – and we all know full well that if Rashford doesn’t score from that position on Sunday there will be widespread calls for the guy who’s scored 18 goals in 55 games but is granted extraordinary leeway compared to any other player, to start ahead of him.

A hat-trick would obviously be great for Rashford, Amorim would be hailed as a genius and Rasmus Hojlund can be the understudy he should have always been as a young striker.

                      Kieran McKenna sullies himself
As we’ve already said we want Amorim to do a good job and it feels slightly premature to be discussing his sacking. But there will be points when he will be under pressure at Manchester United and seemingly set for the exit, whether this season, in five seasons’ time or after a long drawn out Sir Alex Ferguson-like legacy that now we’ve imagined it makes us think that rather than wishing him well we should be putting some sort of jinx on him to prevent such a painful occurrence.

Anyway, what Amorim won’t want when the pressure builds is for there to be too many (or any, for that matter) attractive options to replace him at the club, and we reckon if we asked people now who will be the Manchester United manager after Amorim, a significant number would name McKenna as next in line.

Now, we suspect there will be sickening amounts of respect all round on Sunday what with McKenna coaching many of the Manchester United players that will be turning out and the Red Devils fans appreciative of his work in the academy and as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant before working his magic at Ipswich to bring them back to the promised land.

We don’t quite know what McKenna would have to do to sully himself to the point where he’s no longer considered a future option for United. He could give the fans the finger or call Bruno Fernandes a pr*ck, but he’s not one for confrontation even when provoked.

More likely he does something entirely by accident that the United fans can’t forgive, like Leny Yoro suffering another serious injury by falling into him. Even that may not be enough though. Probably needs to call someone a c***.

Leif Davis gives Antony the runaround
There would be no better way for Amorim to endear himself to his new bosses than to find a use for a footballer they will otherwise have to take a £60m bath over, but we’re trying to be realistic.

Antony has been playing at right wing-back in training this week and assuming he doesn’t c*ck up so badly as to cost United the game against Ipswich, him being taught a lesson by Leif Davis would be no bad thing for Amorim, who can send the Brazilian packing to the reserves ahead of a January sale.

When asked about it he can raise his eyebrows, shrug and tell Dan Ashworth “hey, I tried” before playing Noussair Mazraoui.

Gary Cotterill banned from Old Trafford
We can see Gary now, rehearsing his opening gambit in Portuguese to welcome Amorim into the press conference after victory over Ipswich as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the viral video in which the Sky Sports reporter was outed as a Little Englander after imploring Amorim To Talk Proper while still managing Sporting. But in Amorim’s dreams he won’t be afforded the opportunity to make amends.

We wouldn’t blame Amorim for not wanting to answer another question from Cotterill again and toyed with the idea of him going to every press conference but not ever being picked out to ask one – which would indeed be funny – but have instead decided that the ideal scenario for Amorim would be for Cotterill to be barred from Old Trafford and forced to wait outside while the new United boss mouths “who’s got the ‘cold shoulders’ now?” through a window.

                      Win
Probably a given what with Rashford scoring a hat-trick, but the gaping hole in midfield could still have been there and the defenders may again have forgotten to defend. Not in this case: the donut is filled and three centre-backs cures all defensive ills.

                      An academy debutant
One of the key factors in Amorim being given the job was supposedly his success in bringing talent into the Sporting first team from the academy and with a PSR-forced tightening of the purse strings at United, trust in the youth will likely be key to his success at Old Trafford.

The academy players need to be given the chance to prove themselves, and a game like this, with United 4-0 up with 20 minutes to play, is the perfect opportunity to blood that young talent and a sure fire way for the club chiefs, the fans and even the neutrals to fall immediately in love with Amorim.

There’s nothing quite like One Of Our Own, whether that be a 6ft 5ins giant of a centre-back or an ex-Arsenal striker.
