The Athletic pinpoint ten issues that led to Dan Ashworth’s dismissal as United’s sporting director

    the-athletic-pinpoint-ten-issues-that-led-to-dan-ashworth’s-dismissal-as-united’s-sporting-director

Manchester United’s new part-owners Ineos have hit the headlines today by letting go the sporting director they paid £2 million and waited 6 months for, Dan Ashworth.

The news was broken by David Ornstein of The Athletic before stories started to emerge as to what had gone wrong between Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the former Newcastle and Brighton executive.

The Athletic returned this evening to respond to that speculation more directly having spoken to some inside sources from the club.

Ashworth was dismissed by CEO Omar Berrada after the game against Nottingham Forest yesterday.

They have confirmed a number of issues leading up to that meeting.

    – “Ashworth had let people know it was difficult working in Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s newly assembled football leadership team and so perhaps there is some relief at the development,” the report reads.
    – The decision was “instigated” by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Joel Glazer, Sir Dave Brailsford and Berrada.
    – When the decision to sack former manager Erik ten Hag was made, Ratcliffe was disappointed with the lack of clarity from Ashworth as to who should be brought in and complained that he “should have been more assertive” in targeting someone. Ashworth offered only managers with Premier League experience, including Eddie Howe, Thomas Frank, Marco Silva and Graham Potter.
    – The Athletic note that “Ratcliffe wanted more decisiveness and a dynamic appointment, someone with a certain charisma who was capable of shouldering the enormous responsibility and scrutiny that comes with leading one of the world’s biggest clubs.”
    – Berrada was the driving force behind Amorim’s appointment with little input from Ashworth. Sir Jim had also held a meeting with Amorim before giving the green light. This may have led to some acrimony on Ashworth’s part.
    – There were also raised eyebrows at Ashworth taking a holiday just after Amorim joined.
    – Sir Jim was also unimpressed that Ashworth suggested hiring data consultants to make the decision on the new manager. The owner believed the sporting director should have the experience and wisdom to make the decision himself.
    – There is a suggestion that Ineos thought Ashworth would be more of a transfer guru when in fact he is essentially an “operations manager.”
    – Ratcliffe was upset that both Ashworth and Berrada made statements distancing themselves from the decision to retain Ten Hag over the summer, even though they were supposed to be on gardening leave. Sir Jim feels they should have said nothing and it “irritated” him. There is a suggestion as reported earlier that Ashworth may have been active in the decision to stick with the Dutchman which in itself was against Ratcliffe’s instincts and turned out to be a bad one.
    – Ashworth was apparently reluctant to accept the job cuts planned for his department as Ineos shed 20% of the workforce.

The Athletic also suggest that Ineos may choose not to replace Ashworth directly. They mention the promotion of football director Jason Wilcox, Christopher Vivell, the interim director of recruitment, director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves as well as other executives Sam Erith and James Morton.

Whatever the case, it is another PR disaster for Ineos, who are already in hot water with fans over the decision to increase ticket prices in midseason, among a number of other things.

Skinner waxes lyrical about “excellent” United star who was unstoppable in 4-0 win over Liverpool

Manchester United Women boss Marc Skinner was full of praise for Dominique Janssen following her brilliant display during Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Liverpool.

She scored a goal and provided two assists from her defensive midfield position as United ran riot at Leigh Sports Village.

Elisabeth Terland and Leah Galton were the other goalscorers for United, who have now moved into the European places in the Women’s Super League.

The result marked a much-welcome return to winning ways for the Reds following the defeat at the hands of Chelsea just before the international break.

Reacting to his side’s performance, Skinner said, “I thought the players were excellent, their attitude was excellent.”

“We’ve tasked ourselves in these three games [before the winter break against Liverpool, Newcastle and Crystal Palace], to get after teams and get back to where we want to be, which is attacking and being aggressive.”

“That’s part of what we’ve been doing [in training] and we’ve started it well in this game.”

After Terland scored the opener, United followed that up with a second Galton goal less than two minutes later.

Skinner added in his post-match remarks, “It’s always good to get a back-to-back goal. It was a pretty even game up until that point, I think the second half was much more comfortable.”

On Janssen, Skinner pointed out, “Dom was excellent today. But if you take away on the ball stuff, she offers a lot of [defensive] coverage.”

“She covers gaps that we couldn’t cover last year. There’s a lot of space covering that wouldn’t necessarily lead to chances, but it puts [the opponent] off playing that [pass].”

“We’re covering spaces really well in midfield and it gives protection to the backline.”

United’s attention now turns to the Women’s League Cup on Wednesday night when Newcastle make their way to Leigh Sports Village.

Hargreaves names only Man Utd player who is now ‘undroppable’ after Forest defeat

          hargreaves-names-only-man-utd-player-who-is-now-‘undroppable’-after-forest-defeat

Former Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves insists that Amad Diallo is the only player in Ruben Amorim’s side who is currently “undroppable”.

The Red Devils have had a terrible start to the new Premier League season with a 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday pushing them down to 13th in the table.

Erik ten Hag got the sack for his part in their terrible run of form but Amorim isn’t doing much better in a mixed start to his tenure at Man Utd.

Amorim has started with a draw against Ipswich Town, two wins over Bodo/Glimt and Everton, and two losses in their last two matches versus Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Despite being one of their best players on the day against Forest, Amorim substituted compatriot Fernandes off with 14 minutes to go to be replaced by Mason Mount.

The move didn’t work out for Amorim and Hargreaves couldn’t believe the Man Utd boss’ decision to take the Portugal international off the pitch.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Hargreaves said of Fernandes: “I was amazed he went off.

“He created a goal, scored another, and for some reason at the crucial part of the game when you need a goal you take him off?

“If anything he’s the guy right now, him and Amad, are the two where you’d say they’re going to create you something.

“I’m guessing he’ll probably regret that because I thought Bruno was the one guy, everything was running through him.”

Former Premier League striker and fellow pundit Jermain Defoe added: “Everything goes through him, even with the goal there, Hojlund’s goal, you can see that he’s [Fernandes] is coaching it, that must be massive for a manager.

“That’s why when he came off we were surprised, why’s he taking him off? We couldn’t understand.”

Amorim made four changes for the defeat to Nottingham Forest and Hargreaves commented on the Man Utd boss trying to find his best team.

Hargreaveas continued: “I was surprised Mazrouri didn’t play, I think he’s been Man United’s best player this season, but he probably wanted to give someone else an opportunity.

“Luke Shaw came back and now he’s back out, so he hasn’t been able to find a settled team.

“I do think his team in the end will be Mazraoui, Yoro, Martinez, I think that’ll be his back three.

“Mainoo was in there, he hasn’t had a settled back three, he hasn’t had a settled midfield two, and at the top of the pitch he’s rotating. I think he’s trying to find who is going to fit in this formation.”

Diallo produced another good display in his new wing-back role and Hargreaves reckons the Ivorian is the only attacking player who is now “undroppable” for Amorim.

When asked if Marcus Rashford still gets a place in Amorim’s best XI at Man Utd, Hargreaves replied: “I think he’s an option but none of the boys at the top of the pitch are undroppable outside of Amad maybe.”

Rival PL club plotting sensational managerial swoop for ex-United star- report

West Ham are reportedly contemplating a move for Manchester United legend and Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick if they decide to sack Julen Lopetegui.

West Ham are currently in 14th position in the Premier League, four points adrift of United, who have played a game more.

The Hammers have lost seven matches so far this season, the most recent one being a 3-1 loss at the hands of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

The expectation was that Lopetegui would be fired after the Leicester game but he somehow survived the axe. However, the Spaniard remains under immense pressure to oversee an upturn in performances and results.

The Mirror reports, “Carrick, 43, is one of the names high up on the shortlist at West Ham. ”

“Boro would not want to lose their manager who is helping to build a promotion push in the Championship. But West Ham are eager – if they decide to change – to bring in a manager with an attractive style of football and a link to the club.”

“The club’s directors are deliberating what to do with Lopetegui. They’ve had a poor start to the season but they’re willing to give him some more time, starting on Monday when they face Wolves.”

During his playing days, Carrick made 100 appearances for West Ham before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2004. He then went on to join United, enjoying a lot of success at Old Trafford.

Carrick, who is steadily building his reputation as one of the brightest coaching prospects, is currently in his third year with Middlesbrough, who he led to the play-offs in his first campaign.

At the moment, Boro are in fifth position in the Championship and firmly pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

Carrick held a coaching role at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former England international also briefly took caretaker charge of the Red Devils in 2021, after Solskjaer’s departure.

“Devastated” United star reveals “annoying reason” that “killed” the team in 3-2 loss to Forest

              “devastated”-united-star-reveals-“annoying-reason”-that-“killed”-the-team-in-3-2-loss-to-forest

Rasmus Hojlund has insisted that Manchester United’s momentum was killed by Nottingham Forest, who scored very early goals in either half of their 3-2 win over Ruben Amorim’s men on Saturday.

Nikola Milenkovic broke the deadlock just 91 seconds after kick-off, as he towered over Lisandro Martinez to head the ball into the back of the net.

Hojlund equalised on the rebound following excellent work by Manuel Ugarte, and United came close to taking the lead before halftime when Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar with a powerful free-kick.

The Red Devils made another terrible start after the restart as Morgan Gibbs-White restored Forest’s lead after feeble goalkeeping from Onana, who was culpable once again when Chris Wood made it 3-1.

Fernandes’ brilliant strike gave United some hope of mounting a comeback but Forest managed to hold on for all three points.

After the final whistle, Hojlund spoke to MUTV and was asked whether the result was what he and his teammates wanted.

He responded, “No, not at all. [It is] annoying to concede three at home against Forest. We sort of knew if they should get something and [we conceded] some irritating goals, you could say.”

“Then again, we need to do better, all of us. It is all of us and we need to do better. Today, it could have been much, much better.”

“It is a bit annoying, as they scored early in the second half and also early in the first half, which is sort of killing the momentum a little bit and the confidence as well.”

“I think we played alright in the first half after we get the first goal. It killed the game a little bit that they got their two goals but, then again when we play at home, when we still have 35 minutes left, we have to do more to see if we could have at least got a point.”

On his goal, Hojlund remarked, “Yeah, it is my job to sort of be in these positions, then again, I am not really thinking about that too much right now. I am, to be honest, quite devastated because we know we need the points.”

“We play [again] in what three or four days, so we need to prepare for that and [we have] an important derby next week [at the Etihad Stadium].”

Hojlund now has two Premier League goals to his name this season and five in 16 appearances across all competitions.

Nottingham Forest man hailed for ‘rattling’ Man Utd star as Amorim explains why duo didn’t start

                nottingham-forest-man-hailed-for-‘rattling’-man-utd-star-as-amorim-explains-why-duo-didn’t-start

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was “rattled” by Nottingham Forest star Ryan Yates during the Red Devils’ 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils went behind inside two minutes as Nikola Milenkovic headed in a corner before Rasmus Hojlund equalised on 18 minutes for the hosts.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood both scored as Forest stretched their lead over Man Utd to 3-1 early in the second half before Fernandes struck on 61 minutes to give the Red Devils a chance of a comeback.

The fight back did not come and Ruben Amorim’s side are now down to 13th in the Premier League table after their sixth defeat in 15 league matches this season.

Fernandes was visibly frustrated for much of the match and former Forest utility man James Perch reckons Yates managed to get under the Portugal international’s skin.

After a 24th-minute tussle with Yates, the Man Utd midfielder ran off to complain to the referee and Perch reckons the Red Devils “baby” was “rattled” by the Forest star.

Speaking on BBC Radio Nottingham during the match, Perch said: “What’s he moaning at? He’s such a baby, isn’t he? I really can’t stand him when he’s like that. Yates has rattled him.”

Andre Onana, who has been good for Man Utd this season, dropped a clanger for Forest’s second goal with a Gibbs-White shot beating the Cameroonian down the centre of his goal.

Asked to explain the visitors’ second goal, Amorim said: “We lost the ball in one position, a lot of open space, and then they scored. All the team suffered that goal. Onana already saved us a lot of times, so we have to find a way when this happens to Onana, or to Altay [Bayindir] or Tom [Heaton] to turn around and score two goals. The same way that he saved us, for example, against Ipswich.

“We have to continue as a team, we have to improve in all aspects of the game.”

On Man Utd conceding another goal from a corner, Amorim added: “When this happens, it’s more my fault because I’m responsible. We try to do it in the best way. We did a lot of work in this area because we saw it against Arsenal.

“It was really hard in this context, suffering in the first play [of the game], to put energy into the team but we managed to do it. We were drawing the game, but then in the second half, the same thing.

“Then you feel it in everybody, the fans, the players…it’s really hard to transmit something, like continue to your job. We managed to score one more but then it was more like we wanted [to score again], but there was not a lot of quality.”

When asked why Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee didn’t start against Forest, the Man Utd head coach continued: “Every game is a new history, so you have to focus on the opponent and what you see in training and games. Every detail counts.

“You want to use different players with different characteristics. When we see an opponent, we imagine what kind of game. That is the reason. Rasmus [Hojlund] also scored two goals [against Bodo/Glimt] and then went to the bench [against Everton]. We try to find the best team to win matches.”

Amorim told ‘little boy’ at Man Utd was ‘bullied’ as ‘infectious’ problem takes hold

                  amorim-told-‘little-boy’-at-man-utd-was-‘bullied’-as-‘infectious’-problem-takes-hold

Man Utd defender Lisandro Martinez was “bullied” during the Red Devils’ 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, according to Jamie Redknapp.

The Red Devils were beaten for the sixth time in the Premier League this season as they dropped down to 13th place in the Premier League table.

Ruben Amorim has suffered similar inconsistency experienced by former Man Utd managers with the Portuguese coach drawing one, winning two and losing two of his opening matches in charge.

Nikola Milenkovic gave Nottingham Forest the lead inside two minutes as the Red Devils were undone by a set-piece again after Arsenal scored from two corners against them in midweek.

Martinez, who was missing for the Arsenal match through suspension, was tasked with marking Milenkovic but it was a mismatch as the Serbian headed in the opening goal.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp insisted that Martinez had been “bullied” by Milenkovic on Saturday.

Redknapp said on Sky Sports: “He has to be stronger there. He’s like a little boy there. He just gets bullied. It’s a mismatch, he is trying to block him and its a towering header.”

Ex-Man Utd centre-back Phil Jones also gave his view on the opening goal, he added: “It is a great header, a bullet of a header. But you sense vulnerability from set pieces.

“Martinez is almost too fixated on the man. He’s got the blocking job, he’s too square and is watching the man rather than the ball. Diogo Dalot takes a couple of steps towards the ball and gets caught underneath it. He almost gets sucked underneath the ball.”

On Man Utd defending set-pieces in general under a new coach, Redknapp added: “Manchester United have changed their set piece coach. They’ve got a new guy in, that the manager’s brought in. Carlos Fernandes his name is. Another guy was doing it. But this doesn’t work for me.

“There are a couple of people in the Premier League who you don’t want to mark from set pieces: one of them is Gabriel [Magalhaes] and one has to be Chris Wood.

“[Manuel] Ugarte, he must be 5ft 10in maximum, and he’s up against Chris Wood. If that ball comes in there it’s a mismatch and it’s a goal. Nobody in this situation is taking control. There’s not one bit of confidence when I look at it.”

Jones continued: “There was a real sense of vulnerability, just watching the game, in the crowd. It was almost infectious, every time the ball went out for a corner you felt that.”

On Amorim’s start as manager, Jones said: “I think he’s got a clear identity of how he wants to play, I think he’s got a clear message of how he wants every individual player to be in possession, out of possession, that will take time.

“He’s alluded to the fact that it will take time to implement his style and the way he wants to go about things. But I do think if you’re going to concede goals like they have and set plays then they’re going to find it increasingly difficult.”

New shocking details emerge of reasons behind Ashworth’s abrupt United exit – report

                    new-shocking-details-emerge-of-reasons-behind-ashworth’s-abrupt-united-exit-–-report

New details have emerged, detailing the events that led to Dan Ashworth’s shocking departure from Manchester United.

Earlier today, a bombshell report covered by The Peoples Person revealed that Ashworth has parted ways with United after just five months in charge.

United negotiated an agreement with their Premier League rivals, Newcastle United, to release Ashworth from his contract, paying approximately £3 million in compensation.

This marked the end of four-and-a-half months of negotiations, which began when United officially approached Newcastle regarding Ashworth in mid-February. Following United’s interest, Newcastle placed their sporting director on gardening leave after he requested to be released.

An official statement released by United on Sunday read, “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.”

“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

It was recently suggested that the decision not to sack Erik ten Hag during the summer may have played a big role in Ratcliffe’s decision to axe Ashworth. It was stated that Ratcliffe was “furious” with Ashworth for insisting they stick with Ten Hag, who ended up being a failure.

Now, new information has come to light, regarding other things that unfolded behind the scenes. These include strained relations between Ashworth and other high-ranking executives and Ashworth’s desire to bring in an English manager as Ten Hag’s replacement.

Samuel Luckhurst of Manchester Evening News notes the same. Luckhurst wrote, “Dan Ashworth was not in favour of appointing Ruben Amorim as the new head coach of Manchester United.”

“Separate sources say Ashworth was not involved in the process of selecting Amorim and that he recommended a move for former England manager Gareth Southgate, with whom he worked at the Football Association between 2013-18.”

“Chief executive Omar Berrada spearheaded the approach for Amorim and convinced him to take over United mid-season amid interest from Manchester City to have him possibly replace Pep Guardiola in the summer.”

According to ESPN’s Mark Ogden, Ratcliffe and Ashworth did not see eye-to-eye.

Ogden explains, “One source has told ESPN that Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s minority owner and principle decision-maker, had quickly become unimpressed by Ashworth, believing he lacked the personality and skillset to do the job.”

“So, rather than allow an unsatisfactory situation to deteriorate, a decision was made to act now in a dramatic damage-limitation exercise. Sources said that relations between Ashworth and Ratcliffe had been “rocky” for weeks, but that the swiftness of the decision to part company on Sunday morning has surprised many at the club.”

Ogden claims that apart from the signing of Matthijs de Ligt – whose purchase was sanctioned by Ten Hag – the recruitment of Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui were all driven by departments headed by Ashworth.

United lining up swoop for Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta as Dan Ashworth’s replacement – report

Outgoing Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly one of the names being considered by Manchester United as a replacement for Dan Ashworth.

Earlier today, it emerged that United have parted ways with Ashworth. It was stated that the separation was instigated by United, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe playing a pivotal role.

It’s understood that the decision to axe Ashworth – who joined United from Newcastle just five months ago – was made in a meeting after the Red Devils’ 3-2 loss against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The next step for INEOS is to identify a replacement for Ashworth and according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Berta is on United’s list.

Di Marzio reveals, “The news is that among the names being considered as his possible successor is that of Andrea Berta, an Italian currently at Atletico Madrid.”

“His [Berta] is one of the profiles that the Red Devils board is evaluating, a possibility that could materialize in the next few months: in Andrea Berta’s future there is a possibility called Manchester United.”

Berta is set to leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the ongoing season, after a successful 11-year stay.

He joined the Spanish giants in May 2013 as a scout. He would go on to become their technical director before eventually being appointed a sporting director.

He has held the sporting director role since 2017.

Fichajes recently divulged that Berta is also on the radar of reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

It’s thought that his strained relations with some executives at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium are also partly responsible for his imminent departure.

Under Berta, Diego Simeone’s side have won two La Liga titles, a Spanish Super Cup, a Europa League and a UEFA Super Cup.
