United and PSG square off to sign Champions League rising star with 100% long ball completion – report

    united-and-psg-square-off-to-sign-champions-league-rising-star-with-100%-long-ball-completion-–-report

Manchester United seem set to enter into a fiery race to sign in-demand Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Martin Baturina.

Earlier this year, The Peoples Person discussed the possibility that Man United would plot a move for the youngster.

According to the same report, Real Madrid also signalled their interest in the youngster, recognising his impressive performances this season.

While a later report claimed that Baturina rejected a contract offer from the Spanish giants, it appears as if United are not yet in the clear when it comes to securing an easy transfer.

This morning, Caughtoffside reported that Paris Saint-Germain are taking active steps to sign the Croatian rising star.

“Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs showing an interest in the potential transfer of Dinamo Zagreb youngster Martin Baturina, though Paris Saint-Germain have already held talks over a deal,” the report read.

“CaughtOffside understands that PSG have been working on signing Baturina for around €25 million and want to get the move done as quickly as possible, though Zagreb are adamant that their star player is not for sale,” the report continued.

Baturina has been a revelation for Zagreb this season, bagging five assists and a goal in 14 SuperSport HNL matches. He also scored once and bagged an assist in five UEFA Champions League appearances. (Transfermarkt)

In this season’s Champions League, Baturina has completed an impressive 89% of his passes, including a jaw-dropping 98% passing from within his own half. Even more impressive is that he has completed 100% of his long balls.

The 21 year old has also proven his quality with the ball at his feet, with 63% dribbling while winning 53% of his ground duels. (Sofascore)

Given Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation, an attacking midfielder such as Baturina will surely come in handy. A classic number 10, Baturina could potentially fill any of the front three slots in the team while perhaps dropping back into the central midfield.

Still, there is the possibility that a player like Baturina is not suited to Amorim’s United, with the likes of Mason Mount struggling to find their place in the team.

Ultimately, Baturina’s versatility will be key in determining if he is the right player for United. With his price tag potentially hovering around just €25 million, he may just be well worth the risk.

Louis Saha has “heard some rumours” World Cup winner will make shock return to Old Trafford

      louis-saha-has-“heard-some-rumours”-world-cup-winner-will-make-shock-return-to-old-trafford

Manchester United are taking some time to find their feet under new head coach Ruben Amorim who has suffered some mixed results since taking charge at Old Trafford.

Back-to-back losses halted the momentum after a couple of entertaining wins against Bodo/Glimt and Everton, respectively.

Amorim’s has rotated his squad after each game and is on a clear mission to work out which positions are in most need of surgery going into next summer’s transfer window.

United are unlikely to make any additions in January but there could be a surprise return for a former player, according to ex-front man Louis Saha.

As reported by The Express, Saha believes compatriot Paul Pogba might be offered the chance to rejoin the club after leaving Juventus at the end of his ban for doping offences.

The French midfielder has been in talks to use United’s training facilities to get back up to speed after his absence and Saha says it could be a route back into the fold at Old Trafford.

“I’ve heard some rumours that Paul Pogba will be offered the opportunity to come back and train with Man United in the New Year, and I think that would be a great opportunity for Paul,” Saha said.

“He needs to get back to his best level as quickly as possible, and training with top players will help him to do that. I think he would be thrilled to have the opportunity to go back to the club,” he said.

Saha continued by stating Pogba’s “unique qualities” make him a “very special player” and feels United could use someone of his profile in their midfield at the moment.

“I think the United squad lacks power in the midfield, and we’re missing a skilful player that can play box-to-box, so he would be a good addition [to the United squad] because he’s a different profile of player to what United have,” said Saha.

Considering Pogba is now without a club, Saha feels many Premier League sides will be looking at the Frenchman to bolster their options in the winter and United should be one of those holding interest.

“All the top clubs in the Premier League should see signing Pogba on a free transfer as an amazing opportunity. That’s how I see it.

When I think about Pogba, there are more positives with signing him than there are negatives, and I think he’s a player that should interest Manchester United in January,” he added.

There has been no official word on whether United are opening their doors to Pogba for him to get back to full fitness but re-signing the former academy graduate would certainly be a surprise move from INEOS.

Having twice left Manchester under a cloud, Pogba looked to have burnt his bridges at Old Trafford. But never say never in football, with United certainly in need of adding extra quality and bodies to their current, underperforming crop.

Man Utd put La Liga director on shortlist to replace Dan Ashworth at Old Trafford

        man-utd-put-la-liga-director-on-shortlist-to-replace-dan-ashworth-at-old-trafford

Man Utd are looking at Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta as one candidate to replace Dan Ashworth, according to reports.

The Red Devils revealed on Sunday that Ashworth had left the club by “mutual agreement” after a morning of speculation around his future.

Man Utd spent months chasing his signature earlier this year with Newcastle demanding millions in compensation after being forced to put Ashworth on gardening leave.

It was obvious that Sir Jim Ratcliffe viewed Ashworth as a key figure in his plans to revamp the recruitment structure at Old Trafford but, after just five months, he’s gone.

A short statement on Sunday read: “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

Man Utd have made a terrible start to the new season with Erik ten Hag sacked by the Red Devils hierarchy after winning just three of nine Premier League matches this season.

New head coach Ruben Amorim has hardly improved their fortunes so far with a draw, two wins and two losses in all competitions, to continue the club’s inconsistency.

The appointment of Amorim was understood to be a key reason as to why Ashworth left Man Utd over the weekend with the former Red Devils sporting director hoping they would give Gareth Southgate the job.

And now it’s likely that Ashworth’s replacement could come from abroad too with Gianluca Di Marzio insisting that Man Utd are “evaluating” Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta.

Di Marzio wrote on X: “#AtleticoMadrid sporting director Andrea #Berta is one of the possibilities that #ManchesterUnited is evaluating to replace Dan #Ashworth.”

Man Utd co-owner Ratcliffe has become unpopular in recent months after making a number of cost-cutting decisions as he seeks more room to make signings and help the Red Devils make a profit.

Ratcliffe told United We Stand: “Manchester United has become mediocre. It is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world. We have to make some difficult and unpopular decisions. If you shy away from the difficult decisions, then nothing much is going to change.”

The Man Utd co-owner added: “I know we get criticism in the press, but we do need to challenge the cost of running this club because what I want to be free for us to do is buy really good footballers, not spend so much of the money on infrastructure.

“We can’t run a business at a loss, which is where United have been in the last couple of years.”

          Radek Vitek

Manchester United’s loanee goalkeeper Radek Vitek started once again in FC Blau-Weiß Linz’s 2-1 victory over SK Austria Klagenfurt.

Vitek’s side fell behind early, conceding a penalty in the 23rd minute of play.

They got a foothold back into the game when Ronivaldo Bernardo Sales converted a 35th-minute spot kick of his own. The same player then netted the winner in the 67th minute of action.

BW Linz had slightly less possession at 47% but did have 11 shots to the visitors’ five.

Vitek had a quiet afternoon but helped his side to a crucial victory in yet another start for the Austrian team.

Sofascore gave him a rating of 6.9,  as he was only required to make one save in the entire match.

He further protected his goal by making one punch and pulling down two high claims.

Vitek had only 23 touches of the ball and completed 11 of his 14 passes for a pass completion rate of 79%.

The 21 year old connected with two out of his five long ball attempts and made one clearance as his side held out for the win.

The Czech keeper has been in fine form for his loan side since returning from injury in October.

He has conceded just 13 goals in 12 appearances all season and three in his last four games as BW Linz have taken the impressive scalps of Red Bull Salzburg and Rapid Vienna.

BW Linz now sit in sixth position, just five points off third place in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Vitek will be mightily pleased with how his loan has turned out so far and will take a well-earned winter break until the 8th of February, when they will take on Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub in a local derby.

Different manager, same old Man Utd
Following the defeat to Forest, it;s resulted in 2 defeats in 4 days for Ruben Amorim, who did mention a storm is coming, but I think it’s only the beginning in terms of the struggles for him and his team. United sit in 13th place in the league table, and providing it’s almost the middle of December, I would say that United would find themselves extremely fortunate to finish in the top half of the league table by the end of the season.

Brighton, Fulham, Newcastle and Villa are all currently better than United in terms of quality and reliability. I would even squeeze Spurs into the argument too, but Spurs are just as inconsistent and shite as United as well.

Yes the new manager has just walked into the door, but the question beckons why on earth the club decided to keep Ten Hag in the summer and didn’t get Amorim in the summer instead so he could have a proper pre-season. United got a new sporting director and others in the summer, so why didn’t they get a new manager at the time too so everyone was on the same page?

Now that Dan Ashworth has walked away, or perhaps didn’t want to work with the new manager and preferred working with Ten Hag, Amorim now finds himself in similar situations previous managers were in, with no sporting or football director in place to help make the signings he needs in improving the team.

On paper, United’s team isn’t terrible and they have a decent number of youngsters and experienced players in the team. But my god, the chemistry between the players is bloody terrible, and the first thing Amorim needs to do is build up the confidence (and make sure that doesn’t turn into negligence), and improve the level of teamwork and quality the players are currently providing. I think Rashford is United’s top scorer in the league with 4 goals to his name. This is borderline relegation form in terms of goals input from the team, and it’s worrying how poor the team are even with a new manager in the door which you would think would somewhat motivate the team.

I think a number of players have already given up on the season and are looking to play the victim card, think its too hard to change how they can play in the middle of the season. The only players this season who seem to be giving it close to 100% and actually showing some quality and consistency are Mazraoui, Hojlund, Ugarte and Amad. That’s it. Oh and maybe Onana at a push, but turned into Onana of last season after yesterday’s display.

I think United will finish 9th or 10th maximum in the league this year, and that’s if the team are bloody lucky. They won’t do anything in Europe or the FA Cup, and I doubt that any player will get above 15 goals in the season.

To say what the next step is for Amorim is already in question, but he needs to find out what players are going to be with him in the long term and which ones to get rid of in the summer. Oh and for goodness sake, sign an actual f**king left back in January.

Shaw and Malacia are about as a reliable as a torn up condom, just damaged goods at this point, and Dalot clearly can’t play left back (I actually think Dalot is a half decent player, but he was abysmal yesterday). I wouldn’t even know what back three should start currently, but Mazraoui has to start at CB with another two alongside him. The guy can actually tackle and be aggressive, unlike 80% of the team.

I would say the other two should probably be Maguire and Yoro. At this point, give the youngster a chance because De Ligt and Martinez need a reality check and should get dropped after the way they have started the season together, they have been bloody crap as a pair starting most matches.

As for the front three starting, it should be Bruno, Hojlund and Amad currently. Garnacho and Rashford can come in some games, but nowhere near reliable enough and have the intelligence in some games to just do the simple things. Things need to change quickly, otherwise its going to be another season of misery and disappointment for the fans, and with United playing City next in the league, despite City playing pretty badly at the moment, may god help United and the sack of potato players we have.

            Stop rotating, Ruben
While rotation has merits, especially in relation to many games and fixture congestion, routine rotation with rigid regularity is detrimental. Amorim has persistently employed rotation as a tactical tool in his team selection. A case in point is Amorim team selection against Arsenal which saw in form players like Amad on the bench in the name of rotation.

Amorim must rethink his rotation philosophy and give due consideration to fielding his best performing players who are fit and available. If a player is injured, shows signs of fatigue or otherwise demonstrate unreadiness to play at anytime, then he should be replaced. That is the surest way to success in football, not rotation for the sake of rotation.

…Firstly, in the Premier League if you don’t give 100% you’ll lose. United were pathetic in “wanting it”. you need to at least equal your opponents and then assume your greater skill will win.

Secondly, Rueben is using league games as training sessions. Different line ups, multiple subs. Probably a good idea in the long term. Give the pundits a orgasm or two in the meantime.

            Tradition
Manchester United is club of traditions. It matters. This is Manchester United after all. And reassuring to see Amorim already upholding these. Since Alex Ferguson left there has been a proud tradition of allowing journalists to write sentences like: “their first win at old Trafford for X years” or “their first win over Manchester United since Y”. It’s great to see Amorim keeping the flame alive.

Man Utd have found the rat
Well it’s a good thing we’ve finally identified the big issue with United. The man responsible for 10+ years of inept management has been found and was taken care of. Dan Ashworth’s reign of terror is finally over.

This is comical even by United’s lowest of low standards. Relegation and factory reset should be the aim now, but this club keeps pathetically insisting it just needs a facelift and scapegoating anyone it can find in its vicinity. As long as the fans can keep getting milked for zero return, it’s all coming up Ratcliffe. Long may it continue.

I enjoyed the piece on great backheel goals (though aren’t they always), though in my humble opinion one of the all time greats was missed. Zola vs Norwich in the FA cup. Running full speed to front post from a corner, on the volley into the top corner. Personally I’d rank it well above Giroud’s based on the fact it was completely intentional and a moment of remarkable skill.

He also promised to score a special goal for a young lad dying of a brain tumour a week or so before. Therefore has a ridiculously heart warming background story too. Unbeatable for me!

Mikel Arteta is a fake Allardyce
A few weeks ago, I wrote in and asked the simple question: what would be the point of spending £650k on an in-car ashtray, when your car was missing a functioning accelerator? And when you could have improvised with £2 tinfoil from Poundland instead? A lot of angry Arsenal fans for some reason, wrote in about Havertz (who I never mentioned by name, strange)

Watching Arsenal absolutely dominate Fulham for 80+ minutes at Craven Cottage, all the ball, chance after chance… The only chance for Arsenal to score a goal? Why, a set piece of course! Really beating off them Pulis allegations lads 🤣🤣🤣 Imagine spending all that dosh to become a one-dimensional FAKE ALLARDYCE! Oh the irony, after years of arrogant bollocks from Gooners about “playing the right way” under Wenger eh 😉

And with Arsenal desperately chasing a goal with 20 minutes to go, your £65m ashtray is subbed off. In his place? On comes a £50m balsa-wood bum, a Fake Brazilian “striker”, who cannot get anywhere near the starting 11 for a team clearly desperate for a striker.

The other obvious point was that the pressure was on Arsenal: Liverpool didn’t play and Citeh dropped another 2 points. So naturally, Arsenal and that eternal mentality of choking, was always going to rear its head – Arsenal were never winning after both Citeh and Liverpool didn’t “get” 3 points this weekend. 🙄

Pretty funny to think Isak is on less than half of both Havertz and Jesus’ weekly wages. A serious club would pay Newcastle the requested £115m in January for a player who isn’t cup-tied in Europe and is electric in the league. Therefore, expect Arteta to surprise us all and spaff £74m on another defensive-minded player, of no fixed position 😂

Official: Former United assistant manager Mike Phelan joins Rooney at Plymouth

              official:-former-united-assistant-manager-mike-phelan-joins-rooney-at-plymouth

Former Manchester United coach Mike Phelan has joined Plymouth Argyle to assist Wayne Rooney.

Phelan had two spells at the Red Devils as a first-team coach under both Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 62 year old was a first-team coach at the club from 2001-2008 before being promoted to assistant manager, which he remained until Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

He left the club but returned in 2018 to work with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before leaving in 2021 once more.

Phelan has joined Plymouth to assist another one of his former players, Wayne Rooney, with his team languishing in 22nd position in the Championship table and in the relegation zone.

Plymouth’s official website states that “Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney has today made a change to his backroom staff with Assistant Head Coach Pete Shuttleworth departing the club by mutual consent and being replaced by Mike Phelan.”

Speaking to Plymouth’s official website, Rooney claimed, “Mike is someone I know well, having worked with him when I was a player at Manchester United, and he has vast experience at the highest level of football.”

“I am really pleased to bring him to Argyle and look forward to seeing him get to work immediately.”

The Championship club’s Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, was also beaming at the news.

“We are thrilled to bring in someone of Mike’s calibre so quickly as a replacement.”

“He is one of the most experienced coaches around, having worked with some of the best players in the world, and obviously has a relationship with Wayne already from their time together at Manchester United.”

Phelan also took to X to claim he was looking forward to the challenge.

United face major roadblock to signing “arguably the most complete centre back” in the summer – report

SL Benfica are looking to tie down Manchester United defensive target Tomás Araújo to a new contract.

The Red Devils recently switched to a back three to suit Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation, and this has increased the need for centre backs in the squad.

16 year old Godwill Kukonki has recently been called up to the first team and made the squad versus Arsenal, as he has caught the eye and earned the praise of his new manager.

United have also been linked to new defenders as they still maintain interest in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, and they are reportedly keen on Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande.

Amorim’s side is also said to be interested in signing Benfica’s Tomas Araujo to bolster his defensive unit.

The Old Trafford side may run into problems, however, as it is being reported by Maisfutebol that Benfica are keen to tie him down to a new deal.

With interest in the 22 year old building, Benfica “want to include another season in the young defender’s contract and also increase the release clause to €100 million.”

“The idea is to extend the young central defender’s contract for another season, from June 2028 to June 2029.”

Negotiations would also suggest that the centre back is in for a salary increase, although it is not specified by how much.

Araujo was reportedly of interest to Crystal Palace in the summer, but the Portuguese club rejected a €30 million offer for him.

He has made himself an undisputed starter in this campaign, playing 15 games in all competitions this season and has been described as “arguably the most complete centre back SL Benfica has produced in recent years.”

While Araujo adding one year to his contract and bumping up his release clause may not kill United’s interest in the player, it would certainly complicate any potential deal for this summer as the club struggles with PSR issues.

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Red Devils have recently switched to a back three as part of new manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.

After an injury-riddled campaign last season, Martinez has been a regular feature of the United backline.

He has played 19 games in all competitions this season and played in three of Amorim’s five matches in charge, missing the Arsenal game due to suspension.

However, there are reports from TBR Football that Martinez is gathering interest from other clubs.

“TBR Football understands that Real Madrid are paying close attention to Lisandro Martinez’s situation at Manchester United.”

“Madrid are in the market for a new central defender in 2025 and have already been casting their eyes towards the Premier League”, with Arsenal’s William Saliba and Tottenham’s Cristian Romero both of interest to the Spanish champions.

Madrid are reportedly “keeping tabs” on the 26 year old’s progress and have him on a shortlist of options to move for in the summer window in 2025.

The Argentine’s current deal runs until 2027, but there is an option to extend for another year, and the website claims there is no suggestion that United are looking to sell.

Whilst not hitting the heights of his first season in England, Martinez has still shown his class in a red shirt, as Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola described him as “one of the top five centre backs in the world” after the FA Cup final in May.

United do hold an interest in signing further centre backs, with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite still reportedly a target for the Red Devils.

Nonetheless, with the Red Devils switching to a back three, it is debatable whether the club would entertain any offers for Martinez, especially in the context that Jonny Evans and most likely one of Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire will also be leaving the club in the not so distant future.

1 goal, 2 key passes, 87% pass accuracy: United man dazzles on loan as club’s own winger woes continue

Manchester United’s on loan winger Jadon Sancho shone as Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 to go second in the table.

The winger enjoyed a fast start to his career at the Blues but recently missed a few games as his form dipped.

He did provide an assist in the Conference League a couple of weeks ago against Heidenheim and scored his first Chelsea goal last weekend in a 5-1 victory over Southampton.

The England international was named in the first eleven this evening and his side got off to the worst possible start at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, as they were 2-0 down after 11 minutes.

However, Sancho stepped in with a moment of magic after 17 minutes before goals from Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez won the day for the visitors in the London derby.

The winger received the ball out wide on the right, cut in, beating three Spurs players on his way, before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the bottom left hand corner.

Sancho also showed wonderful trickery for Chelsea’s second goal as he beat the Tottenham defender and played a fantastically weighted ball into the penalty area which resulted in a Chelsea player being taken out in the box for one of the clearest penalties you will see.

Sofascore gave him a rating of 7.9 for his fine display as he registered his second goal of the season.

He completed 47 out of his 54 attempted passes for a passing accuracy of 87%. Among those passes were two key ones that helped his team secure a vital away victory.

The 24 year old proved a menace for Spurs’ defenders all evening as he completed three out of his four dribble attempts.

He also got through some crucial defensive work as he won three out of five ground duels.

As United’s own wingers continue to struggle, numerous fans will look over enviously at what is happening at Stamford Bridge and wonder if it really was the right call to let Sancho leave last summer.

The English winger will next be in action for the Blues when they travel to Kazakhstan to take on Astana in the Conference League on Thursday afternoon.
