Robbie Savage’s Winners & Losers: Spurs ‘so open’ but Chelsea can challenge

In association with Planet Sport Bet, Robbie Savage will give us his own Winners and Losers from the weekend’s Premier League action.

Robbie can’t believe how open Tottenham left themselves, while Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho helped make Chelsea the big Winners…

    Robbie’s Weekend Winners

The big winner this weekend has to be Chelsea.

Only four points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table now – they can certainly win the title this season.

What a comeback! It was a brilliant, brilliant game, full of entertaining football from two forward-thinking sides. But Chelsea… the attacking threat they carry, players at the top of their game, and the strength of depth in the squad – Enzo Maresca can make changes and replace like-for-like in terms of quality.

They are playing with such confidence and they have to be considered as a title contender. Chelsea are my big winners this week.

Individually, Jadon Sancho looked back to his old self, the player we all know he can be, with a lovely goal to kickstart the comeback.

And Cole Palmer – what a player! His panenka summed up the belief running through this Chelsea team.

Elsewhere, Liverpool have to be considered as winners too, despite not having played. With Arsenal and City both drawing, it gives Arne Slot’s men the chance to extend the gap even further.

Forest are still tucked in behind that top four, thanks largely to Chris Wood. His winner at Old Trafford takes him into double figures for the season, with Palmer, Ering Haaland and Mo Salah.

It’s three wins on the bounce for Bournemouth after their fightback at Ipswich. A mention for Conor Chaplin too after his first Premier League goal means he’s scored in all four top divisions.

My old club Leicester rallied late on Sunday too, getting Ruud van Nistelrooy off to a superb start at the King Power with four points in his first two games.

    Robbie’s Weekend Losers

The biggest loser this weekend: Tottenham.

They were 2-0 up at home, and still looking to score more goals, but they left themselves so, so open, allowing Chelsea to score four.

That’s one win in seven now for Big Ange – what’s happened since they beat City 4-0 at the Etihad? They are so inconsistent.

Ange has got to take Spurs to Rangers next – the ex-Celtic boss going to Ibrox – which is a huge game.

But the really big one is Sunday when they travel to Southampton. They simply have to win that one.

Saints are even deeper in the mire and it was another disappointing day for Russell Martin. He said it himself: ‘Another mistake and not a shot on target is madness’. Eight points is now the gap to safety and it really doesn’t look good for them.

Things were looking better for Ipswich – until the 87th minute. They gave away two poor goals, especially Bournemouth’s equaliser, but in their position, if they can’t win the game, they simply can’t afford to lose in those circumstances.

It was a rotten weekend too for Manchester United.

If Ruben Amorim wasn’t certain of the size of the job he faces before, he must be now. He’s still learning about his players and what’s going on above him, with Dan Ashworth leaving already, won’t help him.

Oh, Spurs…@RobbieSavage8 can’t believe how open they leave themselves, even at 2-0 up.

This week is massive for Big Ange…https://t.co/OzyqKBRIaw@planetsportbet pic.twitter.com/VJfT1lAhSb

United open talks to beat Barcelona and Arsenal to 17-goal striker in free summer switch – reports

      united-open-talks-to-beat-barcelona-and-arsenal-to-17-goal-striker-in-free-summer-switch-–-reports

Manchester United are in the mix for Lille striker Jonathan David and have opened talks with the player’s entourage amid interest from Barcelona and Arsenal, according to reports.

As per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are keen on securing the pacy forward’s services but are “threatened” by United and the Gunners.

However, their evidence is incredibly vague, merely noting that “in England, there is talk that Barca are threatened by Arsenal and Manchester United, who are reportedly interested.”

The Spanish newspaper says that the Catalan giants are closely monitoring the player to “see if he is the ideal replacement for Lewandowski in the near future”, and explain that he is higher than fellow United target Viktor Gyokeres on the club’s list.

A more convincing claim is made by CaughtOffside, who write that “Arsenal and Manchester United have been among the clubs to hold talks with the entourage of Lille striker Jonathan David.”

What’s more, they add that the player is “eyeing up” a move to the Premier League, citing sources close to the situation as saying the player has “decided to seek a new challenge” and is “particularly keen on a move to England”.

David is a particularly attractive option given that his contract expires in the summer, meaning that unless a further agreement is struck between him and Lille he will be available for free.

He has been in fine form this season, scoring 17 goals in 23 games in all competitions so far.

If he carries on at this rate he is set to eclipse his impressive stats from last season, when he bagged 26 in 47.

David operates as a centre-forward and would provide immediate competition to Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee for the role at Old Trafford.

Both players have shown glimpses of goalscoring prowess, but are young and currently unable to find consistent form.

David on a free transfer would be a marvellous piece of business from INEOS, although a reunion between Gyokeres and head coach Ruben Amorim, who managed the prolific Swede at Sporting Lisbon, is a rumour which refuses to go away.

Man Utd warning sent to Tottenham after Levy out calls and Postecoglou pressure

        man-utd-warning-sent-to-tottenham-after-levy-out-calls-and-postecoglou-pressure

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan insists that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy “has nothing to do with” the club’s recent form.

Spurs lost 4-3 to Chelsea on Sunday evening as Ange Postecoglou saw his side record their sixth winless match in their last seven fixtures in all competitions.

Their recent poor form has seen them drop to 11th in the Premier League table and piled pressure on Postecoglou to turn results around.

Postecoglou brought a refreshing attacking approach after Tottenham fans had got used to enduring the more pragmatic styles of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called on Postecoglou to change to a different style for certain matches and in certain situations.

Tottenham fans have also blamed chairman Levy with some calls for him to leave the club after 23 years in charge of the north Londoners.

Responding to calls for Levy to leave Tottenham, Jordan warned Tottenham fans that a change of hierarchy doesn’t always bring success with the ex-Crystal Palace chairman using Man Utd as an example.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: “Who’s going to buy Tottenham and pay four billion quid that Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy will want?

“How does it work when you get someone in the door? Because it’s working really well at the moment with Manchester United and Jim Ratcliffe, this new intellectual capital that’s coming in.

“Just what happened on the field against Chelsea and Brighton has nothing to do with the owner. That’s to do with the manager and what he decides to do in the game.

“Now, I do agree that in order for Tottenham to be more competitive, and you go back to the seasons when they’d lost the Champions League final, the argument is, why didn’t they back it then?

“People came out, David Pleat sat in the studio and said it was nothing to do with Levy.

“It was to do with Mauricio Pochettino didn’t want any new players. Pochettino sings a different song.

“The bottom line is, is if you don’t win anything and you’re commercially a very successful football club and you built a wonderful stadium, you’re going to be sat in a situation where people like Jamie Carragher or anybody else, or even the Tottenham fans that have their moments with Daniel Levy, are going to sit there and say, time for a change.”

United ready to spend €40m on ex-Chelsea player who has become superstar at another PL club – report

          united-ready-to-spend-e40m-on-ex-chelsea-player-who-has-become-superstar-at-another-pl-club-–-report

Manchester United are prepared to make a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, as per Fichajes.

United focused heavily on strengthening their backline during the summer. The transfer window, spearheaded by Dan Ashworth, saw the club sign two new central defenders.

The Red Devils initially prioritised signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton. However, after failing to lower the Merseyside outfit’s demands, the Mancunians secured the services of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

Interestingly, the Peoples Person recently relayed a report claiming De Ligt wasn’t the Ashworth driven signing and the move for him was instead led by Erik ten Hag.

Amid the suggestions of an incoherent transfer strategy at Old Trafford, it is being suggested the Premier League giants are once again looking to sign a new defender.

According to Fichajes, United are preparing to sign Guehi, who has brilliantly led Palace’s backline in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old’s positional awareness, calmness in transition situations and ability to keep his side’s defence compact has sparked interest of several clubs and has even made him an England regular.

The Spanish outlet claims the former Chelsea star has landed on United’s radar “as a possible reinforcement in the next transfer market.” It is added that the club’s hierarchy see the Palace star as an “ideal solution” to strengthen their defence.

It is understood United would be willing to offer €40 million to sign the England international, who is tied to Palace until 2026.

It remains unclear what the figures at Selhurst Park are going to demand for their star defender when United knock on their doors. The South London side proved tough negotiators over the summer when Newcastle United tried to secure Guehi’s signature.

United’s backline has looked resilient under Ruben Amorim and their summer signing De Ligt has done well in recent weeks. Yoro, meanwhile, has appeared promising in his first two games for the club.

As such, it is best to wait for the season to progress before setting sights on another defender.

Man Utd ‘could be the ones’ to trigger striker’s release clause in January after Ashworth exit

            man-utd-‘could-be-the-ones’-to-trigger-striker’s-release-clause-in-january-after-ashworth-exit

Man Utd are preparing an offer for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the January transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

The Red Devils have been struggling to score goals in the Premier League this season with Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee not reaching the numbers required of them.

Rashford and Zirkzee did get a brace each as Man Utd beat Everton 4-0 in the Premier League recently as Ruben Amorim won his first home league game in charge of the Red Devils.

But Man Utd then blanked against Arsenal in a 2-0 loss before Nottingham Forest defeated them 3-2 on Saturday with Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes the Red Devils scorers.

There has been speculation surrounding a possible striker addition in the winter with rumours that Zirkzee is being eyed by a number of Serie A clubs on loan.

One player rumoured to be a possibility in the January transfer window for Man Utd – who have just let go of sporting director Dan Ashworth – is Osimhen with the Napoli striker currently on loan at Turkish side Galatasaray.

The Nigeria international has contributed 10 goals and four assists in 13 appearances in all competitions since moving to Galatasaray in the summer.

And now Il Mattino claim that Man Utd ‘could be the ones’ to pay Osimhen’s €75m (£62m) release clause in his contract during the January transfer window.

Italian giants Juventus ‘have set their sights’ on the Nigerian too, while Paris Saint-Germain, like Man Utd, are keen on a winter transfer with the money set to be ‘immediately reinvested in the January market’ by Napoli.

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna spoke about Osimhen’s future on Sunday after speculation about a potential January transfer has ramped up in recent weeks.

Manna told DAZN: “Nobody called us. Osimhen is a player owned by Napoli who is playing on loan at Galatasaray. I would say that we are talking about it too much. At the moment there is absolutely nothing and we are focused on the pitch.”

However, Man Utd fans could be right to read the latest reports with a large dose of scepticism after Italian journalist Paolo del Genio said last week that rumours of  a potential move to Old Trafford are likely to be “a market lie”.

Del Genio said: “I’ll go out on a limb and say that this is nothing more than a market lie.

“There is no chance, at the moment, that the striker now at Manchester United could end up at the court of mister Antonio Conte in the possible negotiations between the Red Devils and the Neapolitans for Victor Osimhen.”

“Enjoying every moment”: United fan favourite expresses delight with new coach Amorim

              “enjoying-every-moment”:-united-fan-favourite-expresses-delight-with-new-coach-amorim

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has claimed he is loving life at Old Trafford under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The Ivorian has been at United since 2020 but had to go out on loan numerous times before finally getting a chance last season.

Nonetheless, he didn’t have the best relationship with previous manager Erik ten Hag, and this resulted in talks over a new contract stalling.

However, since Amorim has come in as manager, Amad has become a regular fixture in United’s line up, having featured in all five of the Portuguese manager’s opening fixtures, including three starts.

Reports seems to suggest that Amad is close to sealing a new deal at United and according to his latest comments, he seems incredibly happy to be at the club.

In an interview with Sky Sport Italia (via The Manchester Evening News) he claimed that he was excited to be learning from the former Sporting Lisbon head coach.

“We try to follow the coach’s philosophy. He speaks to the players; he was a footballer himself, so he understands our feelings, and we are happy to have him.”

“I always try to repay the coach’s trust. We’ve been on good terms since he arrived. He’s always tried to help me, especially because I am playing a new role.”

Amad also explained that whilst his right wing back role is new, he can draw on some similarities to the position he played at Atalanta, echoing comments from fellow former Atalanta player Rasmus Hojlund.

“It’s a position I already covered at Atalanta under Gasperini, but it was more towards the middle. This wing-back position is kind of new to me. I try to do it and the coach is helping me. I am enjoying every moment.”

The Ivory Coast international has also claimed that Amorim is not the only Portuguese member of staff helping him but also lavished praise on the role his captain, Bruno Fernandes, has played in his development.

“He told me some things to improve during games and asked me to be more focused towards the end of the game because that’s when you see the champions.”

The 22 year old also revealed that he feels even more settled at the club due to being able to speak Italian with Fernandes and his new teammate Joshua Zirkzee.

                spurs,-martin-and-walker-slammed-but-palmer-and-overachieving-premier-league-managers-praised

Thomas Frank, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Nuno Espirito Santo must be looking awfully attractive to Spurs and Newcastle. Russell Martin, less so.

You can read Robbie Savage’s winners and losers here.

                Thomas Frank
The record for most home goals scored in a Premier League season is 68, set by Chelsea in 2009/10. At their current rate, a Brentford side which battled relegation last campaign and sold their star striker in the summer will push them mightily close. None of this is normal.

Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa have long excelled as a partnership and individuals who do not demand the limelight nearly as much as Ivan Toney. Igor Thiago made his full debut against Newcastle and already looks acclimated to the physicality and pace of the division – no player won more aerial duels. And Kevin Schade has emerged as a ludicrously effective option to stretch defences and punish mistakes.

Frank cannot be faulted for his timing in taking Brentford into the top half. A handful of bigger, more illustrious clubs could well be searching for managers soon but there is something about his success at a bus stop in Hounslow which feels irreplicable elsewhere.

As foolish as Spurs, Newcastle, West Ham or Everton would be not to target him, Frank might well be even more stupid to take the bait and leave behind something as special as he has helped build at Brentford.

                Nuno Espirito Santo
Between their promotion in summer 2022 and Steve Cooper’s sacking in December 2023, Nottingham Forest won two of 28 away games. Those victories came at relegated Southampton and peak nonsense Chelsea.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s first win after replacing Cooper did tease a change to that trend: a 3-1 rout of St James’ Park last Boxing Day. But at no stage did it feel as though the Portuguese would become the first Forest manager to win at Anfield and Old Trafford in the same Premier League season.

As ever, the beauty for Forest is in the simplicity of it all. Two of their tallest players scored headers, their most talented individuals on the ball either assisted (Elliot Anderson) or assisted and scored (Morgan Gibbs-White), their mastery of housery wound up the biggest “baby” and that resolute defence survived a half-hour onslaught to emerge with all three points.

Forest won nine games in both their two top-flight campaigns since being promoted. They are on seven victories with 23 games remaining. Wolves felt things had stagnated and he was never the right fit for Tottenham, but Nuno has found his perfect home while his former clubs doubt their current relationships.

                Cole Palmer
Much is made of Palmer’s perceived intelligence – and there is certainly an element to which he plays up to the caricature in interviews – but his explanation of the second penalty against Spurs was revealing.

Whoever oversaw his media-training will have nodded sagely at the admission that “I’m just trying to score and thankfully it went in,” but adding that “when I’ve stepped back looked at the clock and thought the game’s a bit frantic. The keeper was ready to dive so I chipped it” made perfect sense.

Fraser Forster, having already made a few decent saves, always was likely to be carried away by the momentum and prospect of a match-saving moment and cajoled into picking either side. Palmer’s Panenka was pragmatism disguised as insouciance; he identified the most likely route to goal and took it. The technical expertise was just a happy by product.

It was quite Bergkamp in its use of skill as a form of efficiency. Say what you will of Palmer’s IQ, but in a footballing sense there are few quite as clever.

READ MORE16 Conclusions on Spurs 3-4 Chelsea: Postecoglou sack, Sancho, Bissouma, Cucurella and the title

                Andoni Iraola
The mere concept of ‘finishers’ remains enough for any Proper Football Man to lament that ‘they were just attacking subs when I was playing’, but Iraola has mastered the art so thoroughly that he has earned the right to call them whatever he wants.

Bournemouth have had more different goalscoring substitutes (seven) than Newcastle have had different scorers at any time this season (five). Their nine goals from the 76th minute onwards is more than any other club and them becoming the first team in Premier League history to win two away games after trailing as late as the 87th is no coincidence.

The instinct is that it’s unsustainable but the reality is that it’s a phenomenally effective back-up plan. If Bournemouth don’t press you off the pitch in 90 minutes, they’ll just use added time to pick you apart.

                Aston Villa
A first clean sheet Premier League win since April’s ransacking of the Emirates, and a first Premier League victory in which Ollie Watkins did not start since November 2022, when his deputies were Danny Ings and Emi Buendia.

Boubacar Kamara’s return has instilled more bite and solidity in midfield, while Unai Emery is becoming more comfortable with his options in rotation. The Champions League should theoretically help unlock a squad capable of managing without first-choice players at centre-half, full-back and centre-forward, even though Tim Sherwood accused the Villa manager of showing Southampton “absolutely no respect whatsoever” by playing “reserve players”.

Emery made four changes to his starting line-up from the Brentford midweek win to bring in Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, Ian Maatsen and Jhon Duran, three of whom cost at least £30m with the other attracting interest worth twice as much.

Southampton will probably take that level of contempt at this stage. And after turning an eight-game winless streak into successive victories, Villa will hardly care.

                Ruud van Nistelrooy
A 21-game unbeaten run as manager, dating back to February 2023, and still it is difficult to work out just how good Van Nistelrooy is.

It has certainly been a solid start to life with Leicester. There are few more potent things in world football than Jamie Vardy under a new manager and while it feels a little rudimentary to praise a coach for salvaging a result after bringing on another forward, it is the sort of thing which only engenders belief in a coach.

In any case, Leicester continuing their knack for scoring late on is a welcome boost for Van Nistelrooy. Only Bournemouth have more goals after 90 minutes (five) than the Foxes, whose four in second-half stoppage-time so far have helped directly earn four points. And they didn’t even need Jordan Ayew to do it this time.

                Antonee Robinson
The fact that Marco Silva has managed this Fulham rise while losing seemingly irreplaceable players in successive summers will go some way to softening the inevitable blow when interest in Robinson is finally acted upon this summer.

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Joao Palhinha are not missed in these parts, but the manager knows the role of “one of the best left-backs in this league” will be tougher to duplicate.

Few players have handled the threat of Bukayo Saka quite as well while still providing thrust and balance in attack. Robinson leads the way for combined tackles and interceptions across the league this season and has made as many passes into the penalty area as the Arsenal forward.

Silva has Arsenal’s number but is wise to keep it stored safely in Robinson’s pocket. If nothing else, his name and position lends itself to an easy if fairly expensive transition from Andy Robertson at Liverpool.

He is in the Premier League XI of the season so far. And deservedly so.

                Will Hughes
A stunning ball for Daniel Munoz and wonderful corner for Maxence Lacroix established Hughes as the best ball-playing midfielder on a pitch also containing Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan.

But really the most startling aspect of Hughes’ performance against Manchester City was that he did not commit a single foul. For those even vaguely familiar with his particularly brand of midfielding, that is an incredible statistic.

The 29-year-old is rarely factored in to ideal Palace sides with everyone fit and available – supporters are pining for that Cheick Doucoure and Adam Wharton pivot – but he has been their best player this season so far.

                Premier League losers

                Russell Martin
Having previously been of the idea Southampton will and perhaps should stick with Martin through an inevitable relegation in the hope of short-term pain being followed by long-term growth, his comments after the Villa defeat felt like a line in the sand.

Digging out players and officials is one thing, but having a pop at travelling supporters who have undertaken a three-hour journey at great expense in spite of a weather warning to watch their team disappoint yet again cannot possibly end well.

“We played out and got pressed just before that, which then makes Joe kick and it gets a cheer from the supporters, and we concede within about 10 seconds, so it is what it is,” Martin said after the game.

“They have a right to criticise everything else but it’s really important to understand why we do things. We kick it to our two smallest players and it comes back.”

For a start, that’s a curious omission of the massive mix-up between Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Nathan Wood when defending a high ball, which was a far bigger problem than the inexperienced Joe Lumley understandably going long immediately after making a mistake when playing it short.

But ultimately that is a cowardly attempt to shift responsibility onto anyone else. The idea that Martin’s way is the only one viable had long since worn thin with many as results and performances deteriorated with no sign of chance, but those quotes were the breaking point for the rest.

It feels very Vincent Kompany in terms of using a club as a vehicle for personal gain to showcase an attractive coaching philosophy which is nevertheless entirely unsustainable at the current level. At least Burnley had a chance of survival for most of last season; only the doomed Sheffield United in 2020/21 have ever earned fewer points after 15 games of a Premier League campaign than this hopeless Southampton side. It does not feel like Bayern Munich will be watching with great interest.

                Spurs
With two narratively similar defeats to Chelsea as bookends, it is difficult to shake the idea that this just isn’t working.

From the 4-1 home loss littered with tactical inflexibility, individual mistakes and injuries in November 2023 to the 4-3 home loss littered with tactical inflexibility, individual mistakes and injuries in December 2024, Spurs have lost more league games than they have won (19 to 17) while picking up fewer points than Bournemouth and only four more than West Ham, having played two matches more.

Tottenham do have to stick with a plan eventually through periods like these if they are to complete this perennial painful rebuild, but it makes sense to wait for one to emerge which works more often than it doesn’t. The flashes of Postecoglou brilliance are no longer even close to eclipsing the dark shadows of these increasingly frequent moments.

This was why the Manchester City thrashing meant so little; that remains this unfathomable team’s only win in their last seven games. Performances and results like that should represent unbeatable highs but for Spurs and Postecoglou the inevitable subsequent downturn numbs the euphoria somewhat.

                Manchester United
The good news is that Ruben Amorim has been here before. “I had this and worse in Sporting in the beginning,” he said after suffering consecutive league defeats for only the second time in his career.

“I know the feeling for me is the same. For the world it’s completely different because you know Sporting is in Portugal, but in Manchester you have a lot of attention, but for me it’s the same. The same feeling,” he added. And therein lies the problem: while growing pains in Portugal amount to an eight-game unbeaten start, in England it results in as many defeats as wins from the first five matches.

This was always going to take time. The problems Amorim inherited cannot be solved in a matter of weeks, no less in the middle of the most congested period of the schedule. Across his four league games so far there have been 20 different players used in the starting line-up; experimentation is inevitable, necessary and never the best foundation for immediate success.

But these setbacks do chip away slowly at belief, which will be the biggest test of Amorim’s suitability and aptitude. This is a fundamentally fragile team and while performances may slightly outweigh results in terms of importance currently, that cannot go on for too long. Even just to navigate this midweek-to-weekend grind it might be necessary to pause these trials in favour of more pragmatism, because these players have shown enough times already that their confidence levels can undermine any manager.

And while the exit of Dan Ashworth is ostensibly a positive for Amorim, it is also proof that this regime will not stick with something which is not working. The Portuguese is not at all close to that stage but stressing the need for time and patience less than a month into the post does not bode particularly well.

                Kyle Walker
The reports of his demise have, if anything, been greatly understated. This has been a drop-off of monumental proportions, a fall from grace to contend with the very worst in Premier League history.

For years Walker defied the process of time. His athletic prowess and reading of the game belied his age and so often this winning machine leaned on him to carry out the thankless tasks and dirty work required to prop Manchester City up. Those six fingers Pep Guardiola held up recently would have been burned without that famed recovery pace.

But it no longer feels like a game goes by without the right-back making at least one costly mistake. He played Munoz onside for the first Palace goal and failed to even jump against the might of Lacroix before throwing his arms up in the air in existential angst.

Manchester City have won one of the eight Premier League games Walker has started this season. His continued presence in this team might be the most damning evaluation possible of their abhorrent recent squad building. No other serious side would have him near their starting line-up.

                Newcastle
There is always a Rafael Benitez quote for any given problem.

“I have talked in the past about the ‘short blanket’…if you cover your head, you have your feet cold, but if you cover your feet, you have your head cold,” the Spaniard once said during his Newcastle reign about the “balance” between having a solid defence and strong attack.

It appears to have been handed down to Eddie Howe, who is no closer to solving the problem. Newcastle scored three goals and conceded just four in five games from the Manchester City draw to the Arsenal win, then scored nine and conceded 11 in their next five from the Forest victory to the Brentford defeat.

There is a maddening inconsistency to their performances, results and output. Only Crystal Palace, Ipswich and Brighton have earned a higher proportion of their overall points in games against the Big Six than Newcastle, and two of those teams are fighting relegation while the other has supplemented that tally well enough against the rest to be in contention for European qualification.

As well as Newcastle raise their game against Your Liverpools and Your Arsenals, it does feel like Howe’s tactical approach has leaned too far into that aggressive underdog mentality which cannot translate nearly as effectively against Your Brentfords and Your Crystal Palaces.

In the Premier League this season, Newcastle have failed to win any of the five games in which they have had 57% possession (their total against Brentford) or more, while going unbeaten in the five matches in which they have had less than 50%. It would be difficult to find a neater way to sum up the strengths and weaknesses of any given manager’s philosophy.

                Arsenal
Not a poor result by any means in itself but at a time when Arsenal need something closer to perfection, there are just too many chinks apparent in the armour.

The set-piece criticism feels misdirected; chance creation through corners and free-kicks is hardly a stick with which to beat any team, yet it has helped obscure a drop-off in open play. Arsenal still rely heavily on Saka and Martin Odegaard to make the difference and while their quality generally does, the lack of a plan in case of emergency is clear.

Yet again, scratching away at the surface of a world-class first team is uncomfortably revealing. Jakub Kiwior is not of the requisite standard. Mikel Merino and Ethan Nwaneri are still getting up to speed from drastically different starting points. Gabriel Jesus cannot change the course of games anymore. Raheem Sterling no longer even seems trusted enough to be given the chance.

Arsenal will look back on those four games in October and November and know full well what cost them if Mikel Arteta does not turn this around by season’s end, but that has only increased the pressure on results since and that relentlessness they displayed in the second half of last season is nowhere to be seen.

                Brighton
“We got punished for two easy mistakes. I think it happens now several times in the season, so I think learning from it is difficult to use. We need to find the right game management in this period of time to take away the three points,” said Fabian Hurzeler.

Only the current top four have led a greater proportion of their Premier League games this season than Brighton (36.1%), whose position in seventh tells the rest of the story: they have dropped points despite leading as late as the 68th and 70th minutes against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, while this was their second draw from 2-0 up in the 86th minute against a team battling relegation.

As brilliant as Brighton are, there can only be frustration at how they should be even higher.

                Aro Muric
It feels absolutely right that the record for most errors leading to a goal in a single Premier League season is currently shared at seven by Ali Al-Habsi (2012/13) and Heurelho Gomes (2008/09). That is unimprovably just correct in all manner of ways. And fair play to Muric for racking up four in 15 games to challenge them.

Ashworth departure blamed on two Man Utd transfer gaffes with three possible replacements named

Dan Ashworth may have cost himself his job at Man Utd with the decision to sign two players in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils announced Ashworth’s departure as sporting director on Sunday in a short statement on their official website after a morning of speculation.

A statement read: “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as sporting director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

Despite the statement suggesting otherwise, The Athletic insisted that ‘multiple sources, speaking anonymously like others in this story to protect relationships, say United instigated the separation.’

Man Utd have made a terrible start to the new Premier League season and haven’t been helped by the Red Devils spending around £180m on five new signings in the summer.

Josh Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui all arrived at Old Trafford but Man Utd are currently 13th in the Premier League table.

And a report in ESPN has hinted that the early signings he was responsible for could have cost him his job at Old Trafford with the arrivals of De Ligt and Zirkzee not looking like wise buys.

‘Sources told ESPN that aside from Matthijs de Ligt, the Netherlands international centre-back signed from Bayern Munich in a combined £50.5m deal with Mazraoui, every summer signing was driven by the recruitment department headed up by Ashworth.

‘Ten Hag wanted De Ligt and, despite believing the squad was already well stocked with centre-backs, Ashworth sanctioned the move in order to show faith in the manager following his retention in the role weeks earlier.

‘Sources added that the decision to acquire forward Joshua Zirkzee, a £36m signing from Bologna, was driven by Ashworth’s team based on data analytics, and the Netherlands forward has so far looked out of his depth in the United team, scoring just three goals in 21 appearances.

‘Defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte (£42.2m from PSG) has had a disrupted start at United and has yet to secure a regular place in the team, while centre-back Leny Yoro (£52m from Lille) only made his debut in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal after suffering a foot injury during preseason.’

Man Utd will now begin the task of replacing Ashworth at Old Trafford with talkSPORT claiming that technical director Jason Wilcox could be promoted as the Red Devils might ‘choose an internal candidate in an effort to save money’.

They also link Crystal Palace director of football Dougie Freedman and Paris Saint-Germain football advisor Luis Campos as other possible candidates.

And former CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs reckons the next appointment could come from within Old Trafford, he wrote on X: “Manchester United have been building a new team and structure at super speed, and there is an acknowledgement there will be an element of learning and adapting on the job to create a winning structure.

“Manchester United confident in their plans for 2025. Jason Wilcox and likely Chris Vivell may take enhanced roles. Sir Dave Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc are involved in recruitment. And Omar Berrada remains a key voice in football and business decisions. He drove Ruben Amorim’s appointment.”

Ralf Rangnick among early names emerging to replace Dan Ashworth at United – report

                    ralf-rangnick-among-early-names-emerging-to-replace-dan-ashworth-at-united-–-report

The football world erupted yesterday with the news that Dan Ashworth has already left Manchester United after his role as sporting director was terminated by mutual agreement on Saturday.

Ashworth only started at United on July 1st but was a bad fit, according to several reports. His unofficial role in pushing to keep Erik ten Hag beyond the summer, his poor contribution to the search to replace him and poor summer player recruitment, in particular the acquisition of Joshua Zirkzee, have all been cited as reasons why part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe quickly reached the end of his tether with the former Newcastle man.

As the post-mortem rumbles on, attention is growing as to who might replace Ashworth.

Some outlets, including The MEN and The Athletic, have noted that given United’s precarious position regarding the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR), it is possible Ratcliffe may choose not to replace Ashworth directly.

Promotion of technical director Jason Wilcox, who works well with CEO Omar Berrada, or the permanent appointment of Christopher Vivell, the interim director of recruitment, are among the options for an internal reshuffle.

While this outcome would no doubt appeal to majority shareholders of the club the Glazer family, who have often promoted from within in the past, it does not fit with Sir Jim’s philosophy of recruiting the best in class in key positions such as sporting director.

If finances permit, the most likely candidate to replace Ashworth is Crystal Palace’s Dougie Freedman.

As The Sun points out, Freedman came close to getting the job when Ashworth pipped him at the post. He has done an exceptional job at Selhurst Park, finding players such as Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Michael Olise.

Reports emerged yesterday that Atletico Madrid man Andrea Berta is in line for the job. He has been at the Spanish club since 2017 and is credited with the acquisition of players such as Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who he bought for €20 million and sold for €70m just a year later, Alvaro Morata and Matheus Cunha.

He has also overseen some dubious purchases, such as €75 million for Julian Alvarez and in particular an ill-advised €127.2m splurge on 19-year-old João Felix.

Next favourite is Juventus man Cristiano Giuntoli, with Lee Congerton, Paolo Maldini and Julian Ward all in the running.

Paul Mitchell, Ashowrth’s replacement at Newcastle, comes in next, but it seems that ship may have sailed.

The Sun also mentions the possibility that United could consider going back to Ralf Rangnick, now manager of the Austrian national team. Rangnick was interim manager at United and famously claimed the club needed “open heart surgery” to get it back to the top of world football.

The comments were a nail in the coffin of his relationship with the old executive structure at the club, but proved to be correct. Rangnick’s promised consultancy role was ended before it began, with rumours that he and Erik ten Hag could not work together. So although unlikely, it is not altogether absurd to suggest that he could be approached by the new regime.

Whether he would be open to returning to the club after such an ignominious exit remains to be seen.

Man Utd: Shock Dan Ashworth next PL move ‘privately pointed out’ amid link with ‘close colleague’

According to reports, it’s been ‘privately pointed out’ that Dan Ashworth could join Arsenal after leaving Premier League giants Manchester United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe targeted Ashworth following his takeover of Man Utd at the start of this year and paid around £3m in compensation to make Newcastle United sanction his exit.

Ratcliffe’s priority after purchasing a minority stake in Man Utd was to overhaul their recruitment model as he wanted the best in class in various roles.

Ashworth was previously lauded for his work at Brighton and was made Man Utd’s sporting director. He’s been working alongside chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox.

With 53-year-old Ashworth just five months into his spell at Man Utd, the announcement of his immediate departure on Sunday morning was a huge shock.

READ: Manchester United have backed Ruben Amorim at Dan Ashworth’s expense – now it better pay off

A statement read: “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as sporting director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.

“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

Despite this, it’s been reported by The Athletic that INEOS ‘instigated the separation’.

‘Multiple sources, speaking anonymously like others in this story to protect relationships, say United instigated the separation. The club say the final agreement to end Ashworth’s contract was mutual.’

It remains to be seen whether Ashworth will pursue an immediate return to football or take an extended break, but The Athletic are also reporting that he’s ‘expected to have no shortage of offers’.

It is also noted that he could be targeted by Arsenal. They are pursuing a replacement for Edu, who has left to work under Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

                      The report claims:

‘The 53-year-old is expected to have no shortage of offers.

‘Several people in the game are privately pointing out how Arsenal are searching for a new sporting director and their managing director is Richard Garlick, a close colleague of Ashworth’s from their West Bromwich Albion days, although there are no indications of anything substantive at this stage.’

The report from The Athletic also revealed that there were ‘raised eyebrows’ after Ashworth ‘took a holiday on Ruben Amorim’s second day at Carrington’, while there was also ‘friction apparent’ over another incident.

‘Ratcliffe felt Ashworth should have been much more assertive in targeting a new head coach and should have looked beyond those people he already knew.

‘He was also said to have raised eyebrows at Ashworth taking a holiday on Amorim’s second day at Carrington. There were mitigating circumstances, with Ashworth marking a significant family event having postponed previous attempts for work reasons.

‘His absence, around the same time, from November’s executive committee (ExCo) meeting was however seen by some as a further indication all was not well. Ashworth had attended the ExCo summit in October at INEOS headquarters in London, as well as the previous one in Barcelona.

‘Friction was also apparent when Ashworth proposed bringing in a data company to evaluate the candidates to replace Ten Hag. Ratcliffe was said to have reacted badly, countering that it was Ashworth’s job to know such matters rather than outsource, while also making him question United’s in-house capabilities.’
