West Ham are reportedly contemplating a move for Manchester United legend and Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick if they decide to sack Julen Lopetegui.
West Ham are currently in 14th position in the Premier League, four points adrift of United, who have played a game more.
The Hammers have lost seven matches so far this season, the most recent one being a 3-1 loss at the hands of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.
The expectation was that Lopetegui would be fired after the Leicester game but he somehow survived the axe. However, the Spaniard remains under immense pressure to oversee an upturn in performances and results.
The Mirror reports, “Carrick, 43, is one of the names high up on the shortlist at West Ham. ”
“Boro would not want to lose their manager who is helping to build a promotion push in the Championship. But West Ham are eager – if they decide to change – to bring in a manager with an attractive style of football and a link to the club.”
“The club’s directors are deliberating what to do with Lopetegui. They’ve had a poor start to the season but they’re willing to give him some more time, starting on Monday when they face Wolves.”
During his playing days, Carrick made 100 appearances for West Ham before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2004. He then went on to join United, enjoying a lot of success at Old Trafford.
Carrick, who is steadily building his reputation as one of the brightest coaching prospects, is currently in his third year with Middlesbrough, who he led to the play-offs in his first campaign.
At the moment, Boro are in fifth position in the Championship and firmly pushing for promotion to the Premier League.
Carrick held a coaching role at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The former England international also briefly took caretaker charge of the Red Devils in 2021, after Solskjaer’s departure.
