Source says Amorim is planning to start surprise name against City – report

    source-says-amorim-is-planning-to-start-surprise-name-against-city-–-report

Ruben Amorim is tempted to select both Mason Mount and Amad Diallo for Manchester United’s crucial trip to face Manchester City.

Both teams enter the match far from their flowing bests with City having won once in ten matches and United having lost their last two Premier League matches.

The match is of vital importance to both for various reasons and United will be aiming to take advantage of the most vulnerable City side they have faced in probably a decade.

Amorim so far has employed a philosophy of heavy rotation of his players as he is assessing who is up to the task and who isn’t when it comes to carrying out his instructions.

In spite of a crucial 2-1 win away to Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday, the Portuguese coach is unlikely to be too impressed with what he saw from most of his players.

However, according to GIVEMESPORT, he continues to like what he sees in Mason Mount.

“Sources have suggested to GIVEMESPORT that Mason Mount continues to impress the boss and that the £55m star is going to be in contention for a start at the Etihad Stadium this weekend,” the outlet claims.

“Mason Mount completed 10 passes and registered two shots on target after coming on as a substitute in Manchester United’s win at Viktoria Plzen on Thursday.”

While the Englishman has yet to convince many supporters of his value to the team, his new boss has always been glowing in his praise of the former Chelsea man.

In a press conference in November, Amorim claimed that he “loved” the type of player Mount is and seemed to suggest he would have a big role to play in his team.

“It is also considered likely that Amad Diallo will return to the right flank, mainly for balance. Amorim likes him centrally but loses his ability on the right side if he is not there.”

Amad took up a more offensive role in midweek as one of the number 10s behind the striker, but the Ivorian is one of the few players who has truly excelled so far in Amorim’s new formation.

A victory over City at the Etihad would do wonders for United’s confidence entering a tough Christmas run of fixtures and Amorim will need to get his team selection spot on if his side are to get anything at their neighbour’s patch, looking for their first win there since 2021.

Manchester United will play Preston North End in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup, should they make it past Coventry City.

United have a storied history in the Youth Cup, having won it 11 times, twice more than Chelsea.

The Busby Babes dominated the trophy in the 1950s, winning their first competition in 1953 and a total of five in the decade.

The club’s most famous Youth Cup victory is probably the Class of 92’s 1992 victory with the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Gary Neville participating in the win.

United last won the competition in 2022 with current first teamers Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho taking part.

The Red Devils will face the Sky Blues at the Leigh Sports Village next Wednesday according to the club’s official website, in their opening fixture of the present-day competition.

If they manage to get the win, they will be rewarded with another home tie against local rivals Preston.

Preston arrived after stunning Liverpool 4-1 in the previous round.

The fixture will need to take place before the 18th of January with a fixed date not being announced yet.

Much will be expected of the current side as United’s under 18s have made light work of any competition they have had.

Not only did United’s under 18s win the treble last season but they are also dominating the league this year, having won all ten of their games in the current campaign.

Excitingly, there are also a plethora of top talents that United fans will be desperate to see such as new signings Chido Obi and Sekou Kone, when he recovers from injury.

There are also numerous talents who have been at the club a while such as James Scanlon, Tyler Fletcher and Godwill Kukoni, who will surely captivate the imagination of the fans and who will aim to put their names down in United folklore with the side’s 12th win in the competition.

Man Utd trio to ‘expose’ Man City named by Paul Merson; makes result prediction with one factor decisive

        man-utd-trio-to-‘expose’-man-city-named-by-paul-merson;-makes-result-prediction-with-one-factor-decisive

Pundit Paul Merson has made his prediction for this weekend’s Manchester derby and has backed three Manchester United stars to “expose” Manchester City.

Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad is impossible to predict as the two clubs are in turmoil.

Man City have just one win in ten matches across all competitions and appears miles off it in various positions. As for Man Utd, they have lost two Premier League games in a row as they are taking time to adapt to life under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Ahead of this match, Man Utd are 13th in the Premier League and eight points adrift of fourth-placed Man City, but they are way ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side in the form table.

When making his prediction for this game, Merson backed Man City to win 2-1, but he named three players who could “expose” Guardiola’s side as United “have a chance” on one condition.

“If Ruben Amorim wants to win this game, he must opt for a front three with the likes of Amad Diallo, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho,” Merson said in his column for Sportskeeda.

READ: Garnacho 5th), Diallo 4th): Man Utd’s ‘unsellable’ seven ranked on how unsellable they *actually* are

“Everybody is exposing City through counter-attacks, and this trio can hurt them with their pace.

“If United can hurt City with pace, they have a chance in this game. They must not sit back and go into a shell while trying to defend all the time. They must take the game to their rivals.

“I still think City hold the edge here though.”

Merson has also commentated on Rashford’s situation, claiming it “will be difficult” for Man Utd to “get rid of him”.

“There are rumours about Amorim approving the sale of Rashford ahead of the January transfer window. I’m not sure who buys him, though,” Merson added.

“His wages are through the roof and it’s not justified at all in his performances! It will be difficult to get rid of him.

“Manchester United are in disarray and them selling one of their highest-paid players? It doesn’t make sense to the buyer.

“If it’s Paris Saint-Germain, why don’t they just sign whoever United want to replace Rashford with? That’s a much better deal.”

Michael Owen has also made his prediction for the Manchester derby and claimed United fans will not be “absolutely petrified going into the game”.

“I think it’s probably the first time in a long time that Manchester United fans aren’t absolutely petrified going into the game, believing that they might get battered 5-0,” Owen said.

“Manchester City are unrecognisable at the moment and I can’t imagine how they can beat anyone by five at the moment, the way they’re playing.”

He added: “It’s probably the hardest derby in years to call, you would say Man City to come out on top but I’m not so sure this time.

“Anything could happen. I put 1-1 in my predictions because I can’t see where Manchester City are going to get their next win from.

“I watched them against Crystal Palace the other day. It just feels like they’re not in control of any game at the moment.”

“Not get his left foot for that”: PL coach warns United their planned bid will be rejected – report

          “not-get-his-left-foot-for-that”:-pl-coach-warns-united-their-planned-bid-will-be-rejected-–-report

Southampton manager Russell Martin has issued a hands-off warning to Manchester United or any other potential suitors of his young star Tyler Dibling.

One of the key features of Ineos’ ownership model so far is that they are always looking to add young talent to the squad.

This has been seen with the exciting captures of Leny Yoro for the first team and goalscoring sensation, Chido Obi in the youth team.

The Red Devils are also about to officially announce a deal for Paraguayan 17 year old Diego Leon, who will join in the summer.

Another youngster they have been keeping tabs on is Southampton’s 18 year old, Dibling.

It was reported that scouts had been watching the player earlier in the season and the interest is said to be driven by United’s technical directorJason Wilcox.

The English starlet will not come cheap however, or at least that is according to Martin.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via Sky Sports) ahead of Southampton’s match against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow he claimed, “I was told some rumours about Man Utd, one was a bid of £21 million.”

The Premier League coach clearly did not think much of the bid as he commented after, “I’m not sure you’ll get his left foot for that.”

Martin did give hope to rivals chasing his signature by stating, “we have offered him a contract, a really good contract for someone his age. At the minute, I don’t think his agent agrees, so that’s where we’re at.”

Nonetheless, he went on to say that Diblings’ parents and the teenager himself want him to stay on the south coast and that he believes a new deal is only a matter of time.

Dibling has been highly impressive this season, despite Southampton languishing in 20th position. He has played 16 games in all competitions, scoring once and providing two assists.

He was also on-fire when United travelled to St Mary’s in September when he tore Diogo Dalot to pieces and won a penalty which his side failed to convert.

Of course should Southampton be relegated this term, Dibling’s price would almost certainly decrease and it will be a situation which numerous top teams, including United, will be keeping a close eye on.

Can ‘tired’ Pep Guardiola turn Man City around? Pundit ‘worried’ as ‘wheels fall off’ under Spaniard

            can-‘tired’-pep-guardiola-turn-man-city-around?-pundit-‘worried’-as-‘wheels-fall-off’-under-spaniard

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton thinks Manchester City will beat Manchester United but has called into question Pep Guardiola’s energy levels.

City have won one of their last six in the Premier League and have one point from their last three matches in the Champions League.

It is safe to say they are enduring their worst period since Guardiola took charge in 2016. Their recent form has left qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League in serious doubt, while the champions are already trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool – who have a game in hand –by eight points.

Hosting United in the Manchester derby could be the perfect fixture to get back to winning ways, but the Red Devils go to the Etihad under little pressure to win, which could work in their favour.

Ruben Amorim recently took over as Man United head coach and his last game in charge of Sporting CP just happened to be a 4-1 win over Guardiola’s side in Europe.

City’s poor form has come as a shock to us all, while the Red Devils’ slow start to the season has surprised basically nobody, even if they appeared to operate like a Proper Club in the summer.

Sunday’s clash could be cagey, chaotic, fantastic or rubbish and no result would surprise us. Premier League winner Sutton thinks City will win 3-1, though.

Prediction aside, Sutton says Guardiola’s recent quotes centred around “not having enough energy” could have been the kick up the backside his players need.

“The wheels have really come off at Manchester City now – who saw that coming?” Sutton wrote in his BBC predictions column.

“City just cannot keep a clean sheet – they have managed one in their past 10 games – and now their manager Pep Guardiola is talking about being tired.

“I know it was in the context of him not having enough energy to go to another club and starting again there, but it must have sent a message to his current players too.

“You never know with Pep, and he may have just been being sarcastic, but if he really is tired then does he have the energy required to turn City around? That would be a worry for City, with the run they are on.

“Meanwhile, at Manchester United, new manager Ruben Amorim is barely through the door and the club’s owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is telling everyone they are ‘mediocre’.

“Amorim beat City 4-1 in his final game in charge of Sporting before he came to Old Trafford which got United fans very excited, but they have soon realised whenever they have played anyone half-decent that they are the same team that were struggling under Erik ten Hag.

“Basically, both teams have been really bad, so what on earth do I go for here?

“In the recent past I have always gone with City in Manchester derbies and, while Amorim beat them with Sporting, you have to remember City could have been a few goals up by half-time in that game.

“So, I am going to go with City to win at home and maybe rejuvenate Pep before Christmas.

“Speaking of stats, I have got a good one for you – United never lost three league games in a row in more than two years under Ten Hag, but Amorim will manage that in less than a month if he is beaten here.”

More importantly, darts player Steven Bunting was predicting with Sutton and says City will win a “cagey” game 2-1.

3-4-3: Rashford dropped, Mainoo and Hojlund start as Amorim fields physical XI vs City – prediction

              3-4-3:-rashford-dropped,-mainoo-and-hojlund-start-as-amorim-fields-physical-xi-vs-city-–-prediction

It seem pretty unlikely that Marcus Rashford will be in the Manchester United starting XI against Manchester City tomorrow.

Rashford put in a poor display against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday and was substituted after 55 minutes.

Alejandro Garnacho will almost certainly take his place at left inside forward.

The man who replaced Rashford in Pilsen, Rasmus Hojlund, will surely start in the centre forward position tomorrow after his goal poacher’s brace against the Czechs.

We expect Bruno Fernandes to move further forward to make up the front three, with head coach Ruben Amorim concentrating on physicality in central midfield.

This could come in the form of Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

Casemiro is likely to drop back to the bench despite a decent performance on Thursday.

Christian Eriksen is not getting much game time under Amorim and is unlikely to start.

Toby Collyer could make the squad. Other options for the midfield and forward positions include Mason Mount, Antony and Josh Zirkzee.

Amad has been one of United’s stand out performers this season but he could be sacrificed for a more defensive option at right wing back.

This could be Noussair Mazraoui, with Leny Yoro coming in to replace the Moroccan at centre back.

Diogo Dalot will probably pip Tyrell Malacia for the left wing back role.

The other two centre backs will be Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are other options. Luke Shaw is the only member of the squad who is out injured.

Andre Onana will continue in goal despite a bad couple of outings in the last two games.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for tomorrow’s 4.30pm GMT kick off:

                big-weekend:-man-city-v-man-united,-nottingham-forest,-russell-martin,-eberechi-eze

A Manchester derby between a pair of deeply vulnerable giants headlines another bumper weekend full of potential Premier League nonsense – nowhere is that more the case than at St Mary’s where the division’s two most stubbornly stupid teams go head to head in a game where absolutely no outcome would represent any kind of surprise.

Game to watch: Manchester City v Manchester United
This Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now Manchester Derby appears one of the trickier to call in recent years. And that’s unhelpful because even when it appeared entirely straightforward to go ‘Well City will win’ it hasn’t always quite gone to plan.

Both teams are working through some stuff. There’s a neat narrative between the contrasting nature of the struggles. This iteration of Pep Guardiola’s City is a team in its death throes, in need of a significant renovation and with lingering uncertainty – despite a new contract – of whether the manager retains the hunger and desire to see those changes through.

In the red corner, a team with growing pains, still in the very early stages of learning what being a Ruben Amorim team even looks like while having to pretty much learn that on the job while playing a game every three days for the foreseeable.

Even in a welcome 2-1 Europa League win in Plzen on Thursday night there were now familiar signs of confusion in the United ranks. There remains a sloppiness to their play as new patterns are slowly learned, and individual errors as a result of the unfamiliarity still abound. Andre Onana had another difficult night after a horrible game against Forest in the league and even now the Etihad isn’t really a place you’d relish going as a goalkeeper having a bit of a moment.

It was always going to take a long time for Amorim to bend a largely unsuitable Man United squad to his ways, and the transition is going to feature more painful moments to join the back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Forest. United might be the one team that wouldn’t choose to get a Man City fixture out of the way right now. City are at their most vulnerable in years, but United are not yet fully prepared to take advantage.

Should all make a fascinating if potentially very miserable afternoon all round. Merry Christmas.

                Team to watch: Nottingham Forest
This really does feel like another huge opportunity for Forest to make another massive statement in a season that has already been full of them.

They face Aston Villa already sitting just above their midlands rivals at the head of the cluster of clubs massed behind the top four and should have every confidence in their ability to open that gap here.

Villa have won their last three games, but the two Premier League runs in there came at home against the division’s two worst away teams, and while the European win at RB Leipzig is more notable it comes with the related cost of existing at all.

Not since September, when a facile 3-0 win at Young Boys was followed by success against Wolves, have Villa managed to win straight after a Champions League engagement. It’s not new information that teams facing that extra burden for the first time often struggle with it, but it’s still so relevant.

After each of their last two European nights, Villa have been well beaten away at a team above them in the table. Forest, having had a week to freshen up and enjoy that memorable 3-2 win at Old Trafford, have a wonderful chance to make that three.

                Manager to watch: Russell Martin
“When I see Ange I see a man with conviction in values that he won’t compromise on, which I admire.”

Yes, Russell Martin, we’re quite sure you do. With Martin having issued perhaps the single most self-serving compliment in the history of compliments, you do marvel at just how stupid Southampton v Spurs could get in a battle of the two most mule-like managers in the division.

Neither Ange Postecoglou nor Martin have yet shown any willingness to budge from their preferred methods despite obvious indicators in the shape of results and personnel that it might be worth at least considering something slightly different.

And that really does reach a head for Martin in this fixture. There is perhaps no clearer challenge to Martin’s stubbornness than this.

We know quite a lot about Postecoglou’s Spurs, don’t we? Not much of it is positive right now, but one thing we know they remain capable of is pinching the ball high up the pitch against teams who want to play out from the back, with deadly consequences. Look what they did to actual Man City a few weeks ago and you shudder at the thought of what they might do to Temu Man City on Sunday night.

But Spurs also haven’t won a single game since. Against teams ready and willing to do things differently, Spurs have been fairly easily stymied. Fulham, Bournemouth and Rangers have all been able to get something against Spurs. None of those teams could be accused of bus-parking, but what they didn’t do – and this is mad – is just do exactly what Spurs would like them to do and play directly into their hands. We know, it sounds crazy.

Chelsea did go toe-to-toe with Spurs and trusted their superior quality would win out in the end. It did, but 4-3 was far closer than it should have been and both Spurs’ early goals came directly from Chelsea making mistakes in dangerous areas of the pitch and paying a high price.

This is a simply wonderful time for Southampton to be meeting Spurs. Their confidence is shot, the manager is a dead mate walking, the few remaining players whose hamstrings haven’t spontaneously combusted under the rigours of Angeball are exhausted and they have almost entirely run out of defenders. Spurs have played two very busy, very tiring games since Southampton last took to the pitch.

If Martin can compromise his fanatically-held beliefs just a tiny bit and play even just halfway sensible football for just this one game, a famous and vital victory is well within Southampton’s grasp. If he doesn’t, even Spurs in their current reduced state are as capable as anyone in the league of picking them off and embarrassing them.

We’re almost certain neither manager is going to budge from Their Way even a single inch. We kind of hope they don’t. We genuinely can’t wait for this game. One way or another, it’s going to be ridiculous.

                Player to watch: Eberechi Eze
In the most related of contingencies, Eze’s 2024 has mirrored Palace’s as a whole. He was magnificent when Oliver Glasner came in and a huge part of that sparkling finish to the 2023/24 season. But after a frustrating and difficult summer with England and the loss of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, he has struggled this season with form and fitness.

There are, though, just a few glimpses since his latest return from injury that brighter times are coming for Eze and Palace. He was much more like his old self in the 2-2 draw against Man City, and there aren’t many better games for a Palace player to really find his best form than Brighton away.

This will be Glasner’s first taste of one of English football’s odder yet full-throated derbies and while the league table suggests a gulf between the two, more recent form points to something tougher to call.

Palace have at least become tough to beat, with just one reverse in the last eight across all competitions, while Brighton have stuttered with only two points from three very winnable games at a time when the opportunity was there to really shake up the chasing pack behind Liverpool.

Brighton appear more vulnerable than at any other time this season and Eze more confident. Could be time for those encouraging signs to really blossom into something more.

Football League game to watch: Norwich v Burnley
A team whose yo-yo has come to rest at the bottom against a team trying to prevent the same thing happening to them. Back-to-back draws against Middlesbrough and Derby have seen Burnley slip slightly off the pace of Sheffield United and Leeds at the top of the table, and the concern will be that the Yorkshire pair currently appear well capable of opening a truly meaningful gap if there are any more slips.

Norwich represent dangerous opponents in that regard due to their sheer unpredictability. In the space of their last four games they’ve won 6-1 and 4-2, lost 3-0 and drawn 0-0. Something will have to give here anyway in a game that pits the division’s best home attack (25 goals scored in just nine games) against its meanest away defence (four conceded in 10).

European game to watch: PSG v Lyon
Paris St-Germain did at least get a Champions League campaign that still threatens utter humiliation back on track with a 3-0 win at RB Salzburg in a vaguely unedifying game that paints bleak pictures of the sport’s future if you think about it for too long, but it came on the back of a pair of Ligue 1 draws that have just opened up the possibility of an actual title race developing with Marseille and Monaco now just five points adrift.

Lyon, the league’s previous dominant force, remain vanishingly unlikely to force their own way into that race sitting a further four points back but would surely love to land a blow on what does appear to currently be a wounded rival.

                  carragher-picks-shock-‘not-great’-man-utd-star-to-sell-with-rashford-as-amorim-‘tears-his-hear-out’

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United should consider selling Bruno Fernandes as well as Marcus Rashford as the Red Devils captain is “not a great player” and could “attract a significant fee”.

Fernandes claimed his third Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award last term, finishing what was the club’s worst ever Premier League season with ten goals and eight assists.

Ruben Amorim’s arrival has seen Fernandes continue as the most important player in the team, so far starting every game of his compatriot’s tenure and playing more minutes under the Portuguese than any other outfield player.

But with United needing to stump up funds through player sales in order for Amorim to improve his squad while staying within the bounds of profit and sustainability regulations, Carragher believes “a dilemma looms with Fernandes” due to his age and indiscipline when out of possession.

“Fernandes has been one of United’s best players during a tough period and would have shone with more quality around him during his Old Trafford career,” Carragher wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

“But he is 30 now and there may be value in offloading him to raise funds.

“Amorim may see it differently and believe a few more years of Fernandes alongside shrewd additions will serve the team better.

“Selling must be a consideration, however, because Fernandes is one of the few players who can attract a significant fee if profitability and sustainability rules are an issue.

“I’ve always felt Fernandes is a great talent rather than a great player. He creates a lot of chances but can be very indisciplined with and without the ball.

“That makes it a lot harder for United to defend as a compact unit as he chases the ball all over the pitch.

“It looks like great commitment to the supporters but the manager will be tearing his hair out.”

Rumours over the future of Marcus Rashford are rife, with the academy graduate now heavily linked with the Old Trafford exit.

And Carragher is “not surprised” the Red Devils are looking to offload the forward, as they will never win one of the biggest trophies with him leading their line.

“Given how many signings have dropped in value since joining United, it does not surprise me that big names such as Marcus Rashford are being linked with a move,” Carragher added.

“United should sell him as he is not delivering value for his lucrative contract. Eleven goals in his 48 league appearances over the past 18 months is not good enough.

“There has been too much of a pantomime around Rashford for the last few seasons, the promise he showed when breaking into the side not realised.

“He is 27 now and should be in his prime. In a front three, Rashford is the third attacker. United will never win the Premier League or Champions League if he is leading the line.”

Manchester United would be open to selling Christian Eriksen in January, as per reports.

Eriksen has endured a tricky season at Old Trafford. The Denmark international started the campaign strongly, having established himself as a regular under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag valued Eriksen’s calmness in possession and influence in the final third, overlooking new signing Manuel Ugarte in the process. The veteran midfielder impressively managed to score four goals and register three assists across all competitions before Ruben Amorim’s arrival.

Amorim handed the Dane a start in his first game in charge of the Red Devils against Ipswich Town. However, since then, he has preferred to hand minutes to the likes of Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, and even the ageing Casemiro.

Eriksen, meanwhile, has spent most of his time on the bench. He remained an unused substitute in United’s 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

The former Brentford playmaker has entered the final year of his contract at United and multiple reports have suggested he is bound to leave the club as a free agent in the summer.

However, it appears Amorim’s arrival could push him towards the exit door earlier than expected.

Christian Eriksen could leave Manchester United in January

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, United would be willing to sell the 32-year-old “as early as the winter” transfer window if they receive a “suitable offer” for him.

Considering how light United are in midfield at the moment, it may be a risky move to let Eriksen depart despite his diminishing role under Amorim.

Interestingly, Plettenberg has suggested that the Premier League giants are exploring the possibility of bringing a new midfielder in January by highlighting his earlier report concerning United’s interest in Ederson.

It says that United are willing to strengthen their midfield in January and are monitoring the Atalanta star.

The 25-year-old Brazilian, known for his tenacious style of play and passing range, is highly valued “internally” at United. He is tied to the Serie A outfit until 2027.

Dibling to Man Utd? Southampton boss Martin laughs off £21m valuation of sensational teenager

                      dibling-to-man-utd?-southampton-boss-martin-laughs-off-21m-valuation-of-sensational-teenager

Russell Martin has laughed off claims that talented winger Tyler Dibling can leave Southampton for £21million.

Dibling has been linked with Manchester United and Aston Villa in a transfer worth £21m but this figure falls way below Southampton’s asking price, with the Saints hoping to agree a new contract with the superb teenager.

His performances have been a real bright spot in an otherwise miserable season for the south coast club, who are bottom of the Premier League with five points from 15 matches.

The 18-year-old joined Chelsea from Southampton in the summer of 2022 but returned to St Mary’s months later after struggling in London.

Having caught the eye in the Premier League this season, particularly in a recent draw against Brighton, Dibling could give a big move another try.

Southampton manager Martin is keen to keep the talented forward, however, and with the most cliche response imaginable, he has said Dibling’s left foot might be worth more than the reported asking price.

“I’m not sure you’ll get his left foot for that,” Martin laughed.

The former Norwich defender continued: “We have offered him a contract, a really good contract for someone his age. At the minute, I don’t think his agent agrees, so that’s where we’re at.

“I think Tyler wants it done, I think Tyler’s parents want it done, so we’ll see how long that takes. There is an option. We can extend. I don’t think we want to do that – we want to reward Tyler for his performances.

“I’ve spoken to Tyler’s mum and dad about it, I’ve spoken to Tyler, but then I’m not involved in any of the negotiations – that’s down to Phil [Parsons, chief executive] and the gang, the owners and Tyler’s agent – and that’s where it gets tricky.”

The Saints host lowly Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday and Martin had some positive team news.

“Jan Bednarek’s back, Paul Onuachu’s back, which is really good, and apart from that we’re all good,” he told a press conference.

“Al McCarthy’s back fit and Rambo’s [Aaron Ramsdale] very close, he may be back for the Liverpool game but if not the Fulham game after that.”

Spurs have only won one of their last eight matches across all competitions and were fortunate to avoid defeat at Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, with head coach Ange Postecoglou under severe pressure.

As well as doubling down on his criticism “assessment” of Timo Werner, Postecoglou said he and his players are “in a fight”.

“We’re in a fight here, collectively we’re in a fight,” he told reporters. “I’m not going to go around worrying about people’s bruised egos. We want to achieve things, we want to be successful.

“We’re down to the bare bones in players, if there’s somebody in that dressing room who’s fit, able to contribute, and feels like they need something extra in this moment, he’s probably not the right type.

“We had some last night that understand the situation that we’re in. We’ve got 15 fit players, in some positions we’ve only got two players. I’m not going to go around trying to get extra out of people if they don’t give extra right now. That gives me an indication of where they’re at.

“Whether you’ve got a lack of confidence, lack of belief, whatever it is to say well, are you in this fight? Because we are in a fight.

“We’ve got a limited number of players to call on, some big games coming up, we can set up our season, I just need people to have that level of commitment and application and find their way through. As much as I’m talking about Timo, I’m talking about the whole group.

“The norms of football, poor performance you get left out, they don’t exist in our environment right now. I need players going out there and putting that to one side.”
