Man Utd chasing 6ft 5in goalkeeper who wants to ’emulate’ two Prem icons from his country

    man-utd-chasing-6ft-5in-goalkeeper-who-wants-to-’emulate’-two-prem-icons-from-his-country

Manchester United are one of the Premier League clubs who are reportedly interested in Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, whose agent has revealed he would like to “emulate” a pair of Brazilian icons.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana has largely gotten rid of the mistakes which were evident in his game last season. In his first campaign at Old Trafford, the stopper was often slammed for hurting his own side.

It is perhaps a coincidence that United’s interest in a new goalkeeper comes soon after Onana slipped back into old habits and passed the ball to Viktoria Plzen player, leading to the Red Devils conceding a simple goal in the Europa League, but interest is there all the same.

Indeed, Football Insider has named United and Tottenham as clubs eyeing moves for Botafogo keeper Victor.

The outlet has spoken to his agent, who revealed that amid heavy interest, the 6ft 5in man wants to play in the Premier League to emulate a pair of Brazilian icons.

“I have had many phone calls from clubs in Europe enquiring about John and that is no surprise after what he has achieved with Botafogo,” Pedro Gutierrez said.

“There has been interest from clubs in England, Germany, Portugal and elsewhere, but John would prefer to play in the best league in the world – the Premier League.

“Liverpool and Manchester City both have Brazilian goalkeepers in Alisson and Ederson and they have both been successful in England.

“John would like the opportunity to emulate those two and become the latest Brazilian goalkeeper to showcase his talents in the Premier League.”

Victor has kept 22 clean sheets in 51 games as a Botafogo player, though at 28 years old, only 105 career games is a very low total.

Ederson, now 31, has played more than that in the Premier League alone, making 262 appearances for City since he joined in 2017.

In any case, Victor wants to follow in his and Alisson’s footsteps, and he could still have a lot of good years ahead of him, with goalkeepers generally playing deep into their 30s and sometimes beyond.

Marc Skinner responds to Ratcliffe’s recent controversial remarks about Man United’s women’s team

      marc-skinner-responds-to-ratcliffe’s-recent-controversial-remarks-about-man-united’s-women’s-team

Manchester United Women boss Marc Skinner has admitted that it was hard to hear Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent admission that the men’s team remains INEOS’ top priority.

In a recent interview with the United We Stand (UWS) fanzine, Ratcliffe seemed to controversially brush aside the women’s team.

Ratcliffe said, “There’s only so much that you can do and our focus has been on the men’s team. If not, you get spread too thinly. We need to sort out the main issue, the men’s team. The women’s team is an opportunity. Women’s football is growing really quickly in popularity and size. We need to participate in that.”

“The girls wear a Manchester United badge on their shirt and they’re representing the club.”

Unsurprisingly, Ratcliffe’s remarks sparked the anger of a section of supporters.

However, according to Skinner, he still feels the support of the owners.

Skinner said in his pre-match press conference on Friday [as quoted by The Athletic], “Words are cheap but actions last longer.”

“I see the actions. It’s hard for me to hear those comments but actually that’s not what I see from the (INEOS) working group that is with us everyday.”

“Would I love the biggest budget in the league? Of course I would, I think everyone would. Everyone in this room wants a sustainable game. We want to grow, we want women to have the same rights, to grow those rights, to have the finances available for all resources. But unfortunately we’ve got to work for that because we’re starting from behind.”

Skinner added, “Support isn’t always finance. It’s knowing you’ve got a strategy. I feel supported in the fact that everybody in this club wants our team to do well and we’re going to grow towards a sustainable model.”

“There’s a lot reported about us and I understand why. But when you feel it, when you’re internal, it’s not a lie. We’re not lying. But there are different ways you can show support.”

Skinner has also come under pressure after claiming there was”a love and affinity” shown by Ratcliffe’s INEOS group.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright insisted that Skinner made a “poor decision” by failing to confront the issues plaguing his side in favour of “dancing for the owner”.

Skinner said about this, “I don’t hear [the criticism]. I know, because I get reports on what people say. I’m in a job where you naturally feel the pressures of a situation. Of course I do, I’m human.”

“When people say things that are not necessarily true about you it can affect the way you think, but actually I’m used to it. I’m used to dealing with that pressure.”

“I don’t think there’s many managers that come under as much as I do. In that sense, I’m hardened to it. But there’s a balance between hardening to it and also doing your job effectively and being human still.”

“I’m sure Ian [Wright] has his reasons to think that and his rationales as to why he needs to push that remit. But I sit comfortably in the understanding of what I need to do for this club and to push the team forwards.”

United Women are back in action on Sunday when they take on Crystal Palace at Borough Sports Ground. Kick-off is at 14:00 GMT.

Picture: United star sends out olive branch to disgruntled teammate after recent public spat

Manchester United forward Amad Diallo has seemingly extended an olive branch to teammate Rasmus Hojlund, following their row in the aftermath of the club’s Europa League victory against Viktoria Plzen.

United beat Plzen 2-1 on Thursday to move to fifth place in the Europa League standings.

The Czech First League outfit broke the deadlock moments after the break courtesy of Matej Vydra, who took full advantage of a big mistake from Andre Onana.

In desperate need of some attacking inspiration, Ruben Amorim turned to his bench and brought on Hojlund in place of Marcus Rashford.

The Dane grabbed a sensational brace – including a late winner – to secure the victory for United and clinch all three points.

After the full-time whistle, Hojlund was spotted by cameras in a confrontation with Amad. The two were arguing because of their failure to pass to each other during the dying embers of the match when United fashioned some very good goalscoring opportunities in transition.

As Diallo approached Hojlund, the United n.o 9 appeared to push the Ivorian away, before ignoring him.

They then temporarily bickered before being separated.

When asked about the incident in his presser, Amorim was quick to play down any suggestions of a rift between the two players.

In fact, Amorim described it as “perfect”, indicating that it proved they really care about the team and the result.

Amad now seems to have confirmed that everything has been resolved, and whatever transpired is firmly in the past.

The 22-year-old took to Instagram and shared a photo of himself and Hojlund about to shake hands.

Diallo tagged Hojlund and added the love heart emoji and fingers crossed emoji

Ten Hag’s former assistant makes damning revelation about United players that will shock fans

          ten-hag’s-former-assistant-makes-damning-revelation-about-united-players-that-will-shock-fans

Former Manchester United coach Rene Hake has suggested that there were some players who rejected advice from the backroom staff.

Hake joined United in the summer from Dutch outfit Go Ahead Eagles, as part of INEOS’ reshuffle of the coaching set-up.

He was one of several appointments, including legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, Hake’s spell at Old Trafford was a brief one.

Following Ten Hag’s sacking in late October, he was also shown the exit door just a few days later.

New head coach Ruben Amorim preferred to come in with his own set of coaches and assistants, whom he worked with in Portugal at Sporting Lisbon.

Hake spoke to AD and reflected on his time with the Red Devils. He revealed that there were several players who were receptive to the coaching staff’s methods but there were a few others who demonstrated a reluctance to heed instructions.

The 52-year-old said, “It’s important that you are very clear. That way, nice conversations arise, even about personal matters. It works like that with everyone, showing genuine interest is always appreciated.

“[Marcus] Rashford and [Alejandro] Garnacho were soon open to working on timing their runs from deep. With Bruno Fernandes, it was a lot about choosing a position in our build-up.”

“But sometimes, players said, ‘I prefer not to change anything in my game at the moment’, and you have to accept that.”

He added, “[What sets top players apart] is football insight, seeing solutions, learning ability and mentality – the desire to execute something well and continuing to execute it well after 36 tries. With Casemiro, it was like he smelled things. When it really matters, he has an antenna, he can already sense what is going to happen on the field.”

On the United owners, Hake remarked, “I don’t hold a grudge. I worked well with the players, staff and other personnel. I said goodbye to everyone to end it well.”

“I was given a look behind the scenes of one of the biggest clubs in the world – and in the Premier League, the NBA of football. If you zoom out, I realise how special that is with my background.”

“I wasn’t there long enough to really judge the course of the club. What I did sense was a deep longing to be relevant again, to get back the winning culture from the [Sir Alex] Ferguson era, combined with the culture of INEOS, who have success in other sports.”

Man Utd have ‘opening’ to land star left-back as his agent is ‘angry’ at Euro giants and will await offers

Insider Christian Falk has stated that Manchester United have an “opening” to land Alphonso Davies, whose agent Nick Huoseh, is “angry” at his current club Bayern Munich.

Davies‘ contract with Bayern is up in the summer, opening him up to the chance of agreeing his next move in January. By that point, he’d be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.

Manchester United and Real Madrid are the two most interested sides, though of late, chances of those moves seems to have dropped, when it was suggested Davies was nearing a contract renewal.

But transfer insider Falk has suggested that the Red Devils have a very good chance, after Bayern made a misstep in those talks.

“[It’s] true that Alphonso Davies won’t make a decision on a new contract with Bayern before the new year,” Falk told the Daily Briefing.

“It was planned around the match with PSG that Davies’ agent, Nick Huoseh, would fly in for talks, but he cancelled. There was then just a video meeting, but Max Eberl, the head of sport at Bayern, didn’t take part.

“I heard Huoseh was a little irritated at Eberl’s no-show. However, the latest development on the agent side is that Nick Huoseh is very angry, and now I heard they want to wait until January for the next talks because they have arranged meetings with Manchester United and Real Madrid to hear out their offers.

“Real Madrid are not offering so much more than Bayern Munich at the moment, so there’s an opening for United here.”

While it is not clear what Bayern or Real are offering, United now know that a good value offer could see them prevail. That would depend on whether Davies wants to move there, but it seems any alternative to Bayern could be a good one, given the bridges there seem to be burning.

Second player hints Paul Pogba could join his club as World Cup winner teases fans on social media

Valentin Rongier is the latest Olympique Marseille player to call for his club to sign former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Pogba is currently a free agent after leaving Juventus in November, and has been strongly linked with a move to Marseille.

And Rongier, as per Foot Mercato, has fuelled speculation that the 31-year-old will join him at the Orange Vélodrome. He said: “We know Pogba’s quality and if he signs for OM one day, it would be a good thing.”

Rongier, who has featured nine times for Marseille this season, is not the first player from Roberto de Zerbi’s squad to speak positively about the World Cup winner signing for the Phocaeans.

One-time United target Adrien Rabiot, who joined Marseille in September, opened up on the subject after his side’s 2-0 victory against St Etienne last week.

As per Foot Mercato, he told reporters: “I would like to play with Paul, we had the opportunity to rub shoulders at Juve but we didn’t play together much because he had physical problems.”

He continued: “We greatly invite him to come to Marseille, what we are putting in place is very big, there is ambition with the coach, the management.”

For his part, Pogba dropped a huge hint that his future is almost decided on his Instagram page on Friday with a string of cryptic emojis – a timer, a zipped mouth and a winking face.

Earlier this year Pogba’s four-year doping ban was reduced to 18 months, meaning he can resume training in January 2025, and can play matches again in March.

Ever since this news broke, rumours have been swirling about where the midfielder will pick up his career.

The player was said to be in talks to train with the United squad at Carrington, but these claims were shut down last month with the Frenchman instead building up his fitness in Miami.

After leaving United for free in 2012 as a hot prospect, Pogba dazzled at Juventus where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

His performances were good enough for United to splash out a record breaking £89m to bring him back to Old Trafford.

Pogba’s second stint at the club showed glimpses of his quality, but often he flattered to deceive. In 226 appearances, he scored 39 goals and registered 48 assists, before departing once again to Juventus on a free transfer.

Manchester United u21s finished off their calendar year with a convincing win over Southampton u21s to move them up into fifth place in the league.

Here are our player ratings for the match. Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Dermot Mee – 7 – Went long spells of the match with little to do but was always alert when called into question, including a fantastic save at point blank range in the final seconds of the match.

Habeeb Ogunneye – 7 – Got up and down the wing well to combine in attack and win some free kicks and was rarely challenged defensively but could have possibly done a bit better on Southampton’s goal.

Louis Jackson – 7.5 – Defended on the front foot which gave Southampton little hold up top and moved the ball quickly in possession to feed the midfield.

Jack Kingdon – 7 – Another in a long line of good performances where he gave up little in open play for the opposition to work with. But have to knock off marks for letting Dipepa free for the goal from the set piece. A bit of confusion between him and Ogunneye but as the centre back and normally so strong in the air, we’d like to see him take control of the situation and attack the ball.

Sam Murray – 7.5 – Possibly the pick of the bunch at the back, a very fine performance on the ball and defensively. Started the match out with a perfectly weighted through ball to set Wheatley free and then was very solid at the back, impressing particularly with his 1v1 defending to block a number of crosses.

Dan Gore – 8.5 – Got himself into the book within the opening minutes after a poor pass and tackle but it was all quality after that with a goal and two assists. As always, his ability to shift momentum on a dime opened up the midfield for him throughout the match to make driving runs, one of which led to Moorhouse’s first goal. Also took his goal excellently from outside the box.

Tyler Fletcher – 8.5 – Played with a bit more freedom to get up the pitch today and made the most of it to grab a nice goal on the volley. Also displayed a good passing range, setting Sharpe free on the right wing a number of times with pinpoint cross field passes.

Malachi Sharpe – 7.5 – A good performance capped off with an assist but came close to scoring a goal of his own when he hit the post in the first half. Pressed really well, forcing a number of turnovers with steals that were akin to recent exploits by Amad Diallo.

Jack Moorhouse – 9 – The man of the match on the day, he will be sure to have caught the eye of Ruben Amorim with that performance. His close control at speed made him a nightmare for Southampton has he consistently opened them up throughout the match. It started by winning a penalty before ending with one of the goals of the season after dribbling more than 60 yards. When he isn’t driving at the opposition, he was also very smart with pass selection.

Ashton Missin – 7.5 – Almost impossible to stop at times with his change of pace to burst past defenders and provided an assist. Came close to scoring too but it was just tipped over the bar.

Ethan Wheatley – 7 – Scored an excelled goal in the second half while off balance but will still be going away today thinking he should have had more after missing a penalty and another big chance in the first half. Didn’t let the misses get to him though and worked hard with his pressing to help the team and eventually got his goal as a reward.

                Substitutes

Finley McAllister – 6.5 – A decent controlled performance, came in and sat in front of the backline while seeing the match out.

Ethan Ennis – 6.5 – Provided his typical direct running off the bench and could have had an assist with a dangerous cross which was just inches away from turned home.

Gabriele Biancheri – 6 – Didn’t get much time on the ball but kept the pressure on up top as he flew into challenges and didn’t let Southampton rest until the final minute.

Jaydan Kamason – 6 – Looked bright when he got the ball down the right wing.

Manchester United u21s hosted Southampton at Carrington on Saturday for their last match of the year before a break for the holidays.

With only two points separating them in the table and Southampton featuring the highly coveted Baylee Dipepa up top, it looked set for an exciting encounter.

But the action looked to go one way from the off. A delicately curled through ball from Sam Murray set Ethan Wheatley free for a big chance within the opening five minutes but a tame effort from the United striker resulted in an easy catch for Southampton keeper Adli Mohamed.

Ten minutes later, United’s corner was cleared to the edge of the box for Tyler Fletcher to shoot into the ground and loop up and into the top left corner out of the reach of the keeper to give United the lead.

In the 19th minute, Jack Moorhouse dribbled into the box and was taken down to earn United a penalty. Wheatley stepped up to take but his low shot down the middle was stopped by Mohamed’s trailing leg which sent the ball over the bar.

Malachi Sharpe then broke free down the right wing and looked to catch the keeper out with a low finish but it cannoned back off the post for Moorhouse to provide a follow up attempt that was excellently stopped by the recovering keeper.

United finally doubled the lead just after the half hour mark, capitalising on a mistake from Southampton at the back. A well played triangle of passes between Dan Gore, Sharpe, and Moorhouse ended with Gore taking the strike at the edge of the box on his left boot into the bottom left corner.

It could have easily been more but the score remained 2-0 going into the break.

The stellar performance was certain to catch the eye of the crowd at Carrington which included Ruben Amorim, Jason Wilcox, Darren Fletcher, and Nick Cox.

Seven minutes into the second half, Moorhouse got his well deserved goal when Gore picked up the ball and drove into space before playing through Moorhouse to run into the box and finish low past the keeper.

Wheatley then made up for his first half misses with a spectacular finish to make it 4-0. Sharpe won the ball high up before Gore laid off to Wheatley who took the chance first time while leaning back and off balance to curl the ball into the far right corner.

Just after the hour mark, the visitors pulled one back though through Dipepa who was previously linked with a transfer to United before making his move to Southampton in the summer from Port Vale. A well delivered wide free kick found an open Dipepa who lost his marker to head in from close range.

Ethan Ennis provided some dangerous running off the bench with a cross that should have been finished to make it five but it wasn’t until injury time that the man of the match Moorhouse added his second to seal off the 5-1 victory.

Picking up the ball well into the United half, Moorhouse drove over 60 yards before passing to Missin and then got the return ball in the box to dance past two defenders and finish into the bottom right corner to cap off an excellent display.

Travis Binnion’s side finish off the year with three points which sees them push up the table into 5th place.

United: Mee, Ogunneye (Kamason 72), Jackson, Kingdon, Murray, Gore, Moorhouse, T.Fletcher (McAllister 62), Sharpe (Ennis 62), Wheatley (Biancheri 72), Missin

A pundit thinks head coach Ruben Amorim is already ‘fed up’ with one of his Manchester United players as his performances have not been ‘good enough’.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as Man Utd’s head coach last month and his start at Old Trafford has been mixed.

He started with a three-game unbeaten run, but they have lost two Premier League games in a row against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways in midweek as they beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1. This weekend, they face arch-rivals Man City, who are eight points clear of Amorim’s side in the Premier League.

There is expected to be an overhaul at Man Utd in 2025 and Marcus Rashford is expected to be one casualty of Amorim’s rebuild.

Man Utd need to sell players to raise funds and Rashford has reportedly been deemed the ‘obvious candidate’ to be let go.

Former Premier League forward Troy Deeney believes Amorim is already ‘fed up’ with Rashford, who has been slammed for his poor ‘application’.

‘Marcus Rashford looks like he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders,’ Deeney wrote in his column for The Sun.

‘Everything is always everybody else’s fault and his application stinks.

‘He is still capable of moments. It wouldn’t surprise me if he goes and scores the winner against Manchester City this weekend and then goes missing for the next few weeks.’

‘He knows he can live off these “moments” and nothing more, and that isn’t good enough. It is the same old cycle.

‘A new manager comes in and for three of four games you see a “new Rashford” and then he slips back into his old ways and old form.

‘He then begins to get dropped. We saw it on Thursday night, subbed off against Viktoria Plzen and already United boss Ruben Amorim looks fed up with him.

‘Look, I’ve been there. It’s not nice when that is happening. As a striker you want to be left on to build some momentum, but I was at the Emirates when he came on against Arsenal last week. He was a disgrace.

‘Amorim summed it up best when he joined, telling Rashford he will get full support but it is up to him as a player, a person.

‘That’s where the problem lies. Nobody wants Rashford to fail, but if he keeps delivering these substandard performances then we will all keep on saying the same things.’

Man Utd: Amorim ‘green lights’ £29m ‘blockbuster signing’ as Red Devils ‘move clear’ of Real Madrid

According to reports, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has sanctioned another signing as he prepares to rebuild his squad in 2025.

Amorim’s tenure at Man Utd got off to a promising start as they went on a three-game unbeaten run, but they suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways in midweek against Viktoria Plzen, but they have a tougher test against Man City on Sunday as they face their arch-rivals at the Etihad.

Amorim will be aware that his side are miles away from challenging from the Premier League title and he’ll be keen to make signings in January and next summer.

One of his priorities will be to sign a new left-back as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have been dogged by injuries in recent seasons.

Man Utd are understood to be close to signing a teenage left-back, but Amorim could also look to acquire a more immediate solution and they are being linked with several targets.

A report on Friday claimed Man Utd have made an offer that’s ‘impossible to refuse’ to sign Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez.

The 23-year-old has shone for Girona in recent seasons and a report in Spain claims Amorim has given the ‘green light’ for Man Utd to make this ‘blockbuster signing’.

‘Manchester United have set their sights on Girona full-back Miguel Gutiérrez after receiving the backing of their manager, Rubén Amorim , to complete the deal. This move aims to strengthen one of the team’s most vulnerable positions ahead of the winter transfer market.

Although Gutierrez is under contract with Girona until 2025, United will be looking to negotiate a fee below the €35m (£29m) stipulated in his release clause. The situation could be complicated by the deal which gives Real Madrid 50% of any future sale, putting pressure on Girona to maximise their profit.’

Man Utd are also being linked with alternatives and AC Milan star Theo Hernandez is being mooted as a potential option.

Hernandez is more proven than Gutierrez, but he is also more expensive. Another report in Spain says Man Utd have ‘moved clear’ fo Real Madrid in the race to sign him as they have ‘ruled out’ the transfer.

‘Real Madrid have decided not to pursue the signing of AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez. This move clears the air for Manchester United, who see the Frenchman as a key opportunity to strengthen their defence.

‘Hernandez, valued at around €50m, could see this move as a new challenge in his career. The possibility of joining an ambitious project such as Manchester United, which is looking to regain prominence in England and Europe, could be attractive. In addition, the Old Trafford club has the financial power to convince both the player and the Italian team.

‘For now, Real Madrid seem focused on other priorities, while Manchester United are moving forward in their attempt to close the signing.’
