“Should be the priority”: Former United star pinpoints Amorim’s greatest need to strengthen

    “should-be-the-priority”:-former-united-star-pinpoints-amorim’s-greatest-need-to-strengthen

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has instructed Ruben Amorim to spend most of his money on a goal scorer in the next window.

The Portuguese’s honeymoon period is well and truly over as the club were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham Hotspur and have lost three out of their last four Premier League matches.

To be fair, Amorim has always suggested he is aware of the scale of the task needed to put United back on the right track and most accept that the squad, once again, requires an overhaul.

United will have restricted funds as they enter the transfer market due to PSR problems and other financial issues plaguing the club at the moment.

Nonetheless, former attacker Sharpe has pinpointed the area Amorim must prioritise above all.

Speaking to The Irish Independent he claimed, “I think a goal scorer should be the priority for Amorim, but they are not easy to find in the January transfer window and they don’t come cheap when it’s Manchester United that comes calling.”

Sharpe backed current striker Rasmus Hojlund but claimed that he will need time to blossom into the player that the fans expect to lead the line at Old Trafford.

“Hojlund is going to be a top player, but he is still young and learning his trade. He has also picked up a few injuries and that can happen to young players at the start of their careers. He is a physical player who gets battered around a lot.”

The 53 year old claimed that whilst it won’t be easy to sign someone, the likely departure of Marcus Rashford will speed things along.

“Signing a striker is not easy, but with Rashford going, maybe the wage bill will be a bit lighter and they can look to go after someone else.”

United have been recently linked to numerous goal scorers such as Victor Osimhen and Randal Kolo Muani.

With United languishing in 13th place in the league and a pitiful 21 goals in 17 matches, it may be shrewd to follow Sharpe’s advice.

Big Boxing Day: Newcastle v Aston Villa, Hurzeler, Ipswich, Marcus Rashford, Edinburgh derby

      big-boxing-day:-newcastle-v-aston-villa,-hurzeler,-ipswich,-marcus-rashford,-edinburgh-derby

It may not be a weekend, but it doesn’t get much bigger than Boxing Day when it comes to the ol’ football. Lovely set of games to look forward to as well…

Game to watch: Newcastle United v Aston Villa
It’s quite a plum fixture list we’ve got here, actually, with lots of top v bottom narratives, teams coming off the back of disappointing results looking to bounce back (Lynn), and even a West London derby. And all of it – all of it – will be available to watch if you have the right streaming services. Merry bloody Christmas indeed.

But this one is about as even an encounter on paper as we’re likely to get over the Boxing Day fixture list, and finds both sides at an interesting junction.

The only thing that gave us slight pause is that both Newcastle and Aston Villa will be desperately hoping they have already had their bad run this season and are now on the ups again, which has ‘we’d take a draw’ written all over it.

But then…you can’t help but think both sides are looking at Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth ahead of them in the running for a Champions League place and thinking ‘these lads are eating their lunch from a bag with our name on it’.

There’s a reason pundits still talk about the Big Six before hesitating slightly and then adding ‘or Big Eight, as it may be now’. Newcastle and Villa are those two peripheral, half-forgotten sides, and will remain so until they manage to string together a couple of seasons looking convincing in their top-four aspirations.

A victory here could push one side or the other firmly into that conversation, while the loser could well slip back down into the mid-table pack they have just done so well to claw themselves out of.

Both have good reason to be full of confidence. Unai Emery’s Villa have won four of their past five in all competitions, capped with a convincing victory over Manchester City (a statement that admittedly means less with every passing week).

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have meanwhile finally shown signs they have a bit more about them than being a pure one-dimensional counter-attacking threat (and nothing else) with three impressively comprehensive victories in the space of eight days.

It’s either going to be a belter or it’s going to be stodgy and rubbish. Either way, we’re all going to learn something. And isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Studious attention to detail?

      Team to watch: Ipswich
Arsenal and Ipswich are not technically playing each other on Boxing Day, if you want to be pedantic about it, which is just typical of you. Why can’t you just let the simplest little thing slide for once? Now shut up and carve the turkey.

Ipswich have struggled this season, as you would expect of a side who have come straight up from League One. But actually, they’ve not been anywhere near as bad as we’ve predicted.

They’ve still lost a lot, because of course they have. But from day one, Ipswich have at least acted like they believe they belong at this level, showing a level of fight and determination that other managers must wish they could inject into their own under-performing sides.

But they failed to live up to that on Saturday, and Kieran McKenna made no secret of the fact he felt his Tractor Boys had dropped way below their usual standard in their four-goal defeat to Newcastle. That marked the first time since losing 2-0 at home to Everton in mid-October that Ipswich have lost by more than a respectable single goal.

Going to Arsenal and then hosting Chelsea gives McKenna two games where there will be absolutely zero expectation on his side, but as an absolute minimum, he will want to see that grit and resilience make a return.

The sad truth for Ipswich is that even if they can regain that anything-is-possible mentality, they probably just don’t have enough quality to stay up. There’s no shame in that, either, given where they’ve come from. But they will have no chance whatsoever if they go into games looking as defeated as they did right from the off against Newcastle. If you can’t get up for the possibility of giving a title contender a bloody nose, then what are you even doing here?

That’s just as important to McKenna’s future job prospects as it is to Ipswich’s chances of survival. Even going down bravely would keep McKenna’s reputation as one of the hottest up-and-comers in the country intact. But if they get into bad habits and sink without trace…well, it might just give some of those more established clubs pause for thought.

      Manager to watch: Fabian Hurzeler
Brighton are always a solid pick for Big Weekend, because whatever they do, it’s either going to be entertainingly brilliant or gloriously stupid.

The South Coast Tottenham are firmly in the midst of their traditional mid-season wobble, and have not won a game for over a month; since then they’ve dropped points to Southampton (uh oh), Fulham (yeah, alright, fine), Leicester (awful, given they were two goals up with four minutes to go), Crystal Palace (yikes) and a thoroughly underwhelming West Ham (parentheses).

Friday’s (again, not technically Boxing Day but they all merge into one big mush, don’t they? The days? At this time of year?) clash with Brentford at the Amex feels a little bit two-spidermen.jpg, but with the notable distinction that Thomas Frank is by now well-established as a very capable Premier League manager. After his excellent start to life at Brighton, baby manager Hurzeler is now facing his first serious test of his own credentials.

Getting back to winning ways at home is the first job to tick off, especially as Brighton have some making up to do on that front: they’ve already hosted four of the current bottom five and failed to beat any of them.

Their record against their fellow mid-tablers has been more solid, though, with victories recorded over both of the Manchester clubs and The London Tottenham. Adding Brentford to that list would help alleviate some of the doubts about whether this is all just a bit too much a bit too soon for their 30-year-old manager.

      Player to watch: Marcus Rashford
If, indeed, we can watch him at all. The scorer of the first goal of the Ruben Amorim era is also the first player to publicly ask to bid adeus to the new manager.

The United boss said in response to Rashford coming out and saying he is looking for new opportunities: “I understand that these players have a lot of people around them, making choices that are not the first idea from the player. I am always here to help Marcus as another player. I have to do what I have to do. They chose to do the interview as it is not just Marcus. I understand that.

“As a coach I focus on performance and the way you train. The rest, it is better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes. At the moment I focus on improving Marcus and we need a talented guy like Marcus. I forget the interview now and see what I see on the pitch.”

Hmmm. We’ll see how true that is, won’t we?

Football League game to watch: Huddersfield Town v Stockport County
The idiot’s answer is Sheffield United v Burnley, but that’s just a crap Premier League game wearing an interesting Championship game’s hat. And so we dip into the upper end of League One instead.

The third tier looks to have opened up into a pack of automatic promotion contenders and the rest, and this fourth v fifth clash could be decisive in showing just how serious the two sides are about making up the gap to Birmingham, Wycombe and Wrexham.

Newly-relegated Huddersfield are on an 11-game unbeaten streak in the league that has lifted them out of an awful early-season slump to go within five points of the top two, while newly-promoted Stockport have just three more games to enjoy the services of the division’s top scorer, Louie Barry, before his already-confirmed recall by Aston Villa takes effect. It could be a belter.

European game to watch: Hearts v Hibs
Boxing Day’s lunchtime kick-off sees Edinburgh’s big boys go head to head midway through disappointing seasons for both sides, with both exhibiting tentative signs of a revival.

Three of Hibs’ wins this season have come in their past four games, with a defeat on their trip to Celtic an acceptable exception, and have hit a particular purple patch in front of goal: they scored three in each of those victories, as well as in (twice) rescuing a ridiculous injury time draw against Aberdeen just beforehand.

Hearts have at least started to find ways to win since Neil Critchley took over in October and have come out victorious in two of their last three, but are yet to string together back-to-back Premiership victories this season. What better time to do it than at home in your big derby game?

United will need to act fast as Chelsea enter race for “defensive powerhouse” who Amorim loves – report

        united-will-need-to-act-fast-as-chelsea-enter-race-for-“defensive-powerhouse”-who-amorim-loves-–-report

Chelsea have entered the race for Manchester United target Dario Essugo.

Since United appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach, the Red Devils have been linked to a plethora of talents at Sporting Lisbon.

The likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Geovany Quenda and Ousmane Diomande have all been rumoured to be on the Old Trafford club’s wishlist.

One name that was also mentioned last month is teenager Essugo, who is currently on loan at Las Palmas.

The 19 year old defensive midfielder was given his debut by Amorim at Sporting last season but went on loan to La Liga in the summer.

It has now been reported that United will face competition from Chelsea for the youngster.

The Sun report that the Blues “want to land midfield ace Dario Essugo on the cheap.”

It is stated that the Londoners must act fast though as Leeds United are also looking to snap up the exciting youngster.

“They tried for the 19-year-old in the summer and now want to offer a loan-to-buy arrangement.”

Essugo has played 12 times in La Liga, scoring one goal so far. The Portuguese has also represented his parent club Sporting Lisbon 24 times in total.

Amorim is clearly a fan of the player as he commented after his debut last season, he “is a very talented kid. [And this] is a message for the youngsters. Age doesn’t matter. Sporting is on this path.”

Essugo has been described as a “defensive powerhouse” who has a “near-perfect win rate in aerial duels.”

Therefore, if Amorim is to be united with his former starlet, he will need to act fast to fend off the challenges of both Chelsea and Leeds.

United to go toe-to-toe with huge rivals for midfielder who is “perfect fit” for Amorim’s system – report

          united-to-go-toe-to-toe-with-huge-rivals-for-midfielder-who-is-“perfect-fit”-for-amorim’s-system-–-report

Manchester United will go head-to-head with Manchester City for Atalanta’s Ederson.

Ruben Amorim has spoken about the need for his midfielders and team to play with the utmost intensity and this has resulted in Manuel Ugarte impressing in the centre of the park.

However, the future does not look so bright for Casemiro or Christian Eriksen, who have both struggled for game time since Amorim’s arrival at the club.

Therefore, it looks like United will need to head into the transfer market for more midfield signings. One player they have been linked to a lot is Atalanta’s Ederson and it has been reported that they may even consider a January move for the Brazilian.

What’s more, journalist Fabrizio Romano commented yesterday that United see Ederson as the “perfect fit” for Amorim’s system and have been watching him for a very long time.

Fichajes report that United will not have it all their own way as they will once again need to do battle with city rivals, Manchester City.

“Both teams are interested in securing the services of Ederson dos Santos, one of Atalanta’s most prominent figures in Serie A,” the outlet claims.

“With his vision of play, technical quality and ability to influence the development of the game, Ederson dos Santos has become a priority target for the Manchester clubs, who are looking to strengthen their squads for the next campaign.”

The player’s value is estimated to be in and around the €60 million mark but this does not seem to be an “obstacle” for either club according to the Spanish outlet.

Amorim is also said to be very keen on the Brazilian, considering him a “key piece to strengthen” the midfield department.

Both clubs are reported to be so keen on the midfielder that they would offer €70 million plus the inclusion of a player to get the deal over the line.

Ederson has been a standout performer this season for La Dea playing 23 games and would certainly give the United midfield a shot of energy it sorely lacks at the moment.

United learn asking price in January for “one of the best” in problematic position – report

            united-learn-asking-price-in-january-for-“one-of-the-best”-in-problematic-position-–-report

Manchester United have learnt the price it would take to extract Antonee Robinson from Fulham this January.

The Red Devils continue to suffer at left wing back and Tyrell Malacia’s poor performance versus AFC Bournemouth a couple of days ago furthered highlighted the problems they are dealing with.

As a consequence, United are heavily interested in signing a left back in the winter or the summer and one name that has gained traction as of late is Robinson.

It has already been reported that United are interested in the American fullback but that Fulham would resist any move made in January.

Robinson further added fuel to the fire when he commented that he would happily leave Fulham if a good offer came in for him and according to reports, we now know what that fee would be.

Football Insider report that sources have told them that Liverpool or any other interested team would “have to pay a fee of £40-50million to sign Antonee Robinson in January.”

He is high on the list at Anfield but “sources say they have been joined by the likes of Man City, Man United and Arsenal in the running for his signature after an impressive season so far.”

Fulham have the 27 year old tied down to a contract until 2028 so “hold the cards over his future at the club and will demand huge money to see him leave.”

The former Everton graduate is generally seen as “one of the best” left backs in the Premier League after a string of high quality performances.

He has started every league game for the Cottagers and has contributed six assists.

However, Football Insider claim that a deal regarding Robinson is far more likely to take place in the summer than the winter as Fulham see him as a key piece in their season.

In addition, while United fans would love to spend big in the winter, PSR rules dictate there are unlikely to be any splurges unless they can sell off big names.

Man Utd: Ratcliffe sends warning to Amorim as INEOS chief looks to replicate ‘bargain buy’

              man-utd:-ratcliffe-sends-warning-to-amorim-as-ineos-chief-looks-to-replicate-‘bargain-buy’

Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has warned Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim that there won’t be “a bottomless pit of money” available to him, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with their 3-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday their seventh in 17 matches this term.

That result means they are 13th in the Premier League table with only Everton, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town scoring fewer goals than Man Utd.

Amorim has hardly improved their fortunes since his arrival with the new Man Utd head coach continuing their inconsistent form with four wins, four losses and one draw in his first nine games in all competitions.

There is hope from the Man Utd fanbase that INEOS and Ratcliffe will support Amorim in the January transfer window as he looks to bring in new players who can adapt to his playing style and philosophy.

And Football Insider insist that Ratcliffe has ‘warned’ Amorim that additions will be limited in the winter transfer window.

              The report claims:

‘Ratcliffe has already warned Amorim that United don’t have a bottomless pit of money and with Profit and Sustainability targets on the limit, the Portuguese coach will have to largely work with what he’s got.

‘The January market hasn’t yet been declared off limits, but Amorim knows unless he can make a compelling case it’s likely he’ll have to wait until the summer for his own reinforcements.

‘That’s why the early weeks of his reign have seen Amorim and his coaches working hard on Amad’s development with training ground sources revealing the winger has been the most adaptable to the new methods.

‘At £19 million from Atalanta almost four years ago, 18-year-old Amad wasn’t cheap – but he looks to be coming good after being largely ignored by ten Hag.

‘Amad has shown a clear desire and willingness to learn and implement exactly what Amorim wants.

‘The same can be said of Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte too.’

Ratcliffe has been impressed at how Noussair Mazraoui – who was signed from Bayern Munich in the summer – has taken to life at Man Utd and now the INEOS chief wants more bargains like the Moroccan.

              The report adds:

‘Sir Jim Ratcliffe is holding up the successful transfer of one summer import as a blueprint model for future signings.

‘Noussair Mazraoui is already proving a bargain buy from Bayern Munich at just £12.8 million – and a reliable one at that.

‘While players around him continue to drop with injuries, the versatile Mazraoui has been ever-present playing all 25 games since his arrival.

‘For context, that’s more than Luke Shaw has played in the past two seasons.’

Amorim ready to ‘forget’ Rashford interview as his ‘focus’ is on ‘improving’ the Man Utd forward

                amorim-ready-to-‘forget’-rashford-interview-as-his-‘focus’-is-on-‘improving’-the-man-utd-forward

Ruben Amorim has revealed he will “forget” an interview in which Marcus Rashford suggested he wanted to leave Manchester United, as the manager will “focus on improving Marcus”.

Amorim caused a splash when he left Rashford out of the squad for the Manchester derby in December. The forward had been benched for a couple of games previous, but featured late on in those games.

After being sat out of the 2-1 win against City, Rashford did an interview in which he said he was ready for a new challenge.

He was left out of the United squad for the next two games, and in the meantime, there have been lots of reports stating he’ll be sold, loaned or look for a way out, with a lot of clubs linked with his signature.

But Amorim has maintained if he does the right things, he can get back into his side, and the United manager has now suggested he’ll look past the interview in the hopes of helping Rashford to improve as a player.

“It is a hard situation. I understand that these players have a lot of people around them, making choices that are not the first idea from the player,” he told Sky Sports.

“I am always here to help Marcus as another player. I have to do what I have to do. They chose to do the interview as it is not just Marcus. I understand that.

“As a coach I focus on performance and the way you train. The rest, it is better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes.

“At the moment I focus on improving Marcus and we need a talented guy like Marcus. I forget the interview now and see what I see on the pitch.”

Whether he will be included in squads going forward will seemingly still depend on if he shows the right attitude, but Amorim will return the favour if that does happen.

                  united-set-aside-e180m-to-spend-on-three-stars-considered-“fundamental-pieces-for-club’s-future-project”-–-report

Manchester United have reportedly set aside significant funds to complete the January signings of Southampton winger Tyler Dibling, Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres and Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

United are undoubtedly eager to strengthen the squad for new head coach Ruben Amorim and the club continues to be linked with multiple players across a number of positions.

The January transfer window – which opens in slightly over a week – represents a chance for the Red Devils to bring in some players, although they may be limited by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Indeed, it has been suggested that, given United’s dire financial situation, Amorim may be forced to make do with the players currently at his disposal.

Nonetheless, this has done little to silence the rumours linking United with numerous players from both England and abroad.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, United are plotting a triple January swoop for Dibling, Gyokeres and Kobel.

“Manchester United is willing to make a strong investment in the next winter transfer market, with a budget of around 180 million euros to strengthen its squad.”

“The English club has identified three key players who could be fundamental pieces for its future project, and is prepared to negotiate with their respective teams to close these signings.”

On Dibling – a player United are believed to have scouted extensively – Fichajes state that Southampton are asking for €35m to part ways with him. Amorim’s side are willing to pay this sum.

Gyokeres, who has a €75m price tag is considered to be one of the best strikers in Europe. The talisman is well-known to Amorim from their time working together at Sporting.

Finally, Fichajes claim that Dortmund want €70m for Kobel – a goalkeeper who “has been one of the great revelations in the Bundesliga, standing out for his agility and leadership between the posts.”

United are of the opinion that Kobel could be a mainstay in their ranks for several years to come.

Again, it’s important to take this report with a pinch of salt, especially considering United’s financial difficulties, which would make it almost impossible to splash €180m in January.

United return to action on Boxing Day when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium.

Sporting CP have decided to part ways with Joao Pereira, who was named Ruben Amorim’s successor only in November.

The new Manchester United gaffer became one of the most sought-after managerial names in Europe after leading Sporting to their first Liga Portugal title after a wait of nearly two decades.

Even this season, the Lisbon-based outfit were flying under the 39-year-old tactician, who oversaw 11 victories in the opening 11 league outings before deciding to join United.

Many still questioned Amorim’s pedigree, owing to his lack of experience of managing a team in Europe’s top leagues. In particular, a few doubters scoffed at Sporting’s two league title wins under the Portuguese coach, as ending Benfica and Porto’s dominance wasn’t considered a great achievement.

However, Sporting’s struggles following Amorim’s exit have underlined just how brilliant work he did in Lisbon.

Early in November, Pereira took over from Amorim as head coach of Sporting after his role as reserve team manager.

Sporting have failed to replicate the same performances and results under Pereira, who has only managed one win in his four league games as the side’s new boss.

They now sit second in the table, a point behind rivals Benfica. Porto have also caught Sporting and are now level on points.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Sporting’s hierarchy have had enough and have decided to sack Pereira. He wrote: “The decision has been made today. João Pereira will leave the club.”

As per A Bola, Rui Borges, who is currently manager of Vitoria Guimaraes, will replace Pereira.

Amorim’s reputation is only going to improve in Lisbon following the development. However, he faces the daunting task of steadying the ship at Old Trafford.

United have performed relatively well under him, but the results haven’t been very promising. Further, off-field issues have only made things trickier for the new gaffer.

Man Utd told big summer sale was a ‘bad call’, as star was a player ‘you don’t want to lose’

Former Manchester United man Jaap Stam has told the club letting Scott McTominay go was a “bad call” as he’s the type of high-impact player “you don’t want to lose”.

McTominay had his best season in a United shirt last term. He bagged 10 goals and three assists in all competitions, which included seven Premier League goals, a tally only beaten by two Red Devils players.

The Scotsman has since scored four goals and provided three assists in a Napoli shirt after a £25million move.

Ex-United man Stam has told the club it was a poor decision to let him go, given the impact he had at Old Trafford and is now having in Italy.

“Scott McTominay has been a very important influence at Manchester United even though he wasn’t a guaranteed starter,” Stam told SportLens.

“He scored goals and had a big impact and those are the players you don’t want to lose as a football club.

“Leaving might’ve been a good step for him, as is currently being discussed with Marcus Rashford, but he may well have wanted to stay.

“He has been a very important player for Napoli and his confidence is growing because he is starting most games and overall I think selling him was a bad call at United.

“Sometimes you have to make tough decisions as a club and I understand that, but I wouldn’t have been keen to sell McTominay.”

It seems United may not have known what they had until they lost it, as they could do with a player like McTominay amid their poor run, which sees them 13th in the Premier League.
