Amorim does a sensational U-turn, United star linked with January exit likely to earn contract extension – report

    amorim-does-a-sensational-u-turn,-united-star-linked-with-january-exit-likely-to-earn-contract-extension-–-report

It appears as if Manchester United are intent on keeping Harry Maguire around despite rumours of his potential exit.

Last week, The Peoples Person discussed links between Maguire and four clubs that have set their sights on the English centre-back.

Napoli, Galatasaray, and Leicester City were all named as interested parties, as were Fenerbahce.

What’s more, several other Premier League teams are also believed to be interested in landing his signature should United decide against triggering his contract extension.

Still, Maguire has reportedly been holding out hope that United would extend his contract, with manager Ruben Amorim expected to have a big say on whether or not he will remain at the club.

Furthermore, Maguire himself confirmed that he and Man United have made positive strides toward signing a contract extension.

Now, it seems increasingly likely that Maguire’s future lies at Old Trafford, at least over the near term.

“Man United are likely to trigger Harry Maguire’s one-year contract extension option,” Football Insider reported.

“The 31-year-old is currently able to agree a pre-contract with foreign sides in the January transfer window but United are keen to extend his deal and prevent that,” the article continued.

“United want to safeguard the defender’s value by activating the option in his existing deal.”

While Maguire fell down the pecking order when former manager Erik ten Hag arrived, he has since revived his United career. The England international has played in 10 Premier League matches out of a possible 17, starting on six occasions.

His importance has been amplified due to United’s multiple injury casualties, including Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez who suffered setbacks earlier this season.

Given his improved form and commitment to the club, Maguire would be a great defensive asset for United going forward, particularly if Amorim persists with his formation that requires three at the back.

United draw up three-man list of “potential replacements” for United superstar, it includes PL dribble king – report

      united-draw-up-three-man-list-of-“potential-replacements”-for-united-superstar,-it-includes-pl-dribble-king-–-report

Marcus Rashford’s future continues to dominate headlines and will continue to do so until Manchester United can find a solution.

Even during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers, most of the questions asked to Ruben Amorim were on the Mancunian’s future.

The issue is threatening to distract the players with the dressing room upset with the timing of his infamous interview while the head coach is far from pleased with the forward’s personal team.

United will actively look for a solution in the January market should they receive concrete bids and in case the Englishman is moved on, the club have outlined a couple of names as possible replacements.

      Replacements for Rashford

Teamtalk have revealed that Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton and Hove Albion and Athletic Club winger Nico Williams are all on the list.

The Georgian will be too expensive for the Red Devils, especially mid-season and if at all the club go for him, it is likely to be in the summer.

Plenty of other clubs are already interested in the Spaniard and it is unlikely that Athletic Bilbao will agree to move the Euro 2024 star on in January.

Among the trio, the Japanese seems the most affordable but with Brighton also struggling for consistency (without a win in their last five games), it remains to be seen if the Seagulls agree to part ways with the 27-year-old.

“While waiting for Rashford’s future to be clarified, sources have revealed to TEAMtalk that Man Utd are in the early stages of looking at some potential replacements.

“Napoli superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has plenty of admirers at Old Trafford, but he would be very expensive mid-season. Also on the Red Devils’ shortlist is Brighton’s Karou Mitoma and Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, who was electric in Euro 2024.”

The Japanese international’s form has also plummeted since his 2021/22 heroics, when he was termed the dribbling master, with Mitoma managing only three goals and two assists thus far, not exactly the kind of goalscoring output United need currently.

However, it must be remembered that for any replacement to be brought in, Rashford’s future first needs to be decided.

      Where will Rashford go?

It will not be easy for INEOS, who have supported Amorim’s stance, to find a solution with the Red Devils holding out for £50 million to £60 million.

That figure coupled with the England international’s humongous £375,000 per week wages (as per capology) means not too many clubs can afford the 27-year-old.

Long-term admirers Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have both left the race while Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce would find it hard to fund a permanent move for the United No 10.

Saudi Pro League sides have the finances to afford such a deal but the United star currently has no intention of moving to the Middle East at this stage of his career.

Loan offers have arrived but are unlikely to be sanctioned. INEOS have a huge conundrum to solve in the coming days.

Man Utd make ‘offer’ for Amorim ‘obsession’ as they plan £190m splurge on three signings

        man-utd-make-‘offer’-for-amorim-‘obsession’-as-they-plan-190m-splurge-on-three-signings

Man Utd have made an offer to sign Barcelona winger Raphinha as they plan to invest €230m (£190m) in three new signings, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season so far with Erik ten Hag losing his job at the end of October and being replaced by Ruben Amorim in November.

Man Utd are currently 13th in the Premier League with Amorim unable to halt their inconsistency in performances and results.

The Portuguese head coach has taken charge of nine matches in all competitions since being appointed as Ten Hag’s successor, winning four, losing four and drawing one.

Although Amad Diallo and others have adapted to Amorim’s formation, tactics and philosophy, Man Utd still need to bring in some more players to suit Amorim’s style of play in January or the summer transfer window.

And now reports in Spain claim that Man Utd have made an ‘offer’ for Barcelona winger Raphinha after Amorim ‘asked’ for the Brazilian.

The former Leeds star has been in good form for the La Liga side this season and Amorim wants Raphinha to help ‘solve their problems’ at Old Trafford.

Amorim has ‘asked the board to make several signings’ with Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres his ‘first objective’ and the Swede ‘has a buyout clause of €80m and is on the radar of the world’s most powerful clubs thanks to his skills’.

The Man Utd boss is ‘also obsessed’ with Raphinha and ‘has been surprised by the performance’ of the ex-Leeds man and Amorim ‘hopes to be able to convince Joan Laporta and Deco to open the doors to him, even though he is an indispensable pillar’ at Barcelona.

It is understood that a ‘very tempting proposal that could cause doubts at the Camp Nou’ with Barcelona going through ongoing financial difficulties.

With Amorim ‘tired of Andre Onana, who was a request from Ten Hag, and has never convinced with his performances in the Premier League’, the Red Devils boss’ ‘last request’ is Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Man Utd are prepared to ‘invest €230m (£190m)’ in the three additions with an offer of €80m plus €10m for Raphinha.

One player who Amorim sees as valuable is Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes but ex-Red Devils winger Lee Sharpe feels the skipper needs to be a better leader.

Sharpe told BetMGM: “Bruno is a funny one for me because he does magical things sometimes and other times he gives away a sloppy ball and it leads to a goal like he did against Forest.

“He throws his arms in the air too much for me, blaming teammates as well as referees when as a Man United captain, you need to be above that and take some responsibility for performances.

“But he works his socks off every week, covers every blade of grass on the pitch and he grafts as much as any player in the Premier League. Sometimes he tries a little bit too hard and gets caught out or gives away the ball too often playing impossible passes.

“He just needs to concentrate a little bit more on the simple things and allow his ability to take over in the final third where he is an asset to United.

“He might not be the most natural captain but he is the obvious choice, who else have we got with as much experience as Bruno?

“Harry Maguire when he is on the pitch is a leader and so is De Ligt who has settled in nicely, he has plenty of experience in high-level football at Bayern Munich and Juventus, these players can step up and help without the armband.

“Every player in that team needs to take responsibility for their own performances and once they do that United will improve. I do think they do have enough leaders in the team and every team in the league could do with a Brian Robson or a Roy Keane, but they’re not easy to come by.”

Is Ruben Amorim ‘doing a Jose Mourinho’ to prove a point to Manchester United? Also: Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou should only be doubted if he strays from his principles.

          Send your thoughts to theeditor@football365.com…

Where is the Man Utd criticism?
I had to laugh around all the discourse about Spurs being a laughing stock getting trounced by a three goal margin at home. Yet there’s very little about Man Utd being and doing the same.

Hated. Adored. And now also ignored.

          I’m loving Big Ange instead
You know, reading all this dross from the other side of the world about Ange’s need for a “Plan B”, playing kamikaze football, being out of his depth, I had to bite. I’ve read about Ange’s shortcomings for well over a decade now. He proves you all wrong time and time again.

Ange had trouble in the 2000s as the coach of the Joeys, Australia’s national team youth side. And at the end of that dark tunnel, he made a promise to a close friend and colleague: enough compromise, I’m sticking to my principles. This lead to success at ‘Roarcelona’, the Socceroos, Yokohama and Celtic. Mickey Mouse you say? I’d love to see the credentials of Sir Alex and Arsene pre-EPL. I’d also love to see the “winning” English managers have achieved. So why should he listen to you or your pundits? You can’t even win your own league.

It is from sticking to his principles that he has made it to Tottenham. For all those Spurs fans that have short memories (*cough* the regulars of certain youtube channels *cough*), the Spurs’ motto is “Audere est Facere”. To dare is to do. We lost this under Poch’s final season, Mourinho, Nuno and Conte. Turgid, dire football, relying on Kane and Son to pull us through it all. I really enjoyed waking up at 3am on a Monday to watch that utter garbage.

Now no Kane, an older Son. Here is a manager willing to commit to breaking a mental fragility at a club so unwilling to change. To do so with significant contraints in his squad depth. A man who has an identity of attacking football, something Spurs fans (again, very short memories) have begged for for years. Danny Blanchflower would be disgusted by these “fans”. Quick reminder to those that have forgotten: “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.” Take that from someone who was actually successful at Tottenham. Sounds like Danny was almost exactly describing Ange…

Argue to a brick wall about Plan Bs and being pragmatic, it’s a loser mentality. The THST were a joke, ready to ‘explain’ to Ange about the importance of Arsenal losing the league. Like he hadn’t just come from the Old Firm derby, a rivalry beyond the football pitch. Again, the English thinking they know best. Lsoer mentality. But what Ange can do right now, is build the right mindset. Make the impossible happen, and transform the club’s relationship with success.

A Plan B like a low block does nothing for the club’s future. Nothing for the players like Bergvall and Gray who will be there for years to come. To play on the front foot even when the going gets tough, means these players won’t retreat, they won’t hide, when the games matter. When success is within reach. They will take the game to anyone. Don’t lie to me: you all saw the score from 1-5 to 3-5 and thought “no way, but maybe?”

On the game: Liverpool have no injuries, insane depth everywhere on the pitch, an extra day of rest, and are the clear best in England and Europe. What did you expect? Just defend for your lives? Sorry, the manager doesn’t believe in you guys. Give up before the first whistle and know your place. Be losers before the game even begins. Seems like the message from the pundits and some Spurs fans (those at the ground were brilliant).

The moment Ange strays from his principles, it’s over. That’s not what the club needs in this revolution. It needs the strongest will in the darkest night. No matter the difficulty, the injury toll, the lack of squad depth, Tottenham Hotspur have to believe they can still beat anyone, anytime, anywhere. Once the team is ready to compete with personnel, the mentality will already be there, ready to take this club to another level. Ange is trying to eradicate the English from Tottenham, and build an unwavering belief that the team can win no matter the circumstance.

Oh, and F365. Utter gutter journalism. The constant use of derogatory terms for a team with about 10 injuries, a (correct) ban for racism, signings that reflect more a child labour camp than a football club, and only now rebuilding when a rebuild was required 5 years ago. You yearn for personalities, for points of difference in this league. Bemoan likeness amongst teams. Yet write utter dross time and time again about a guy who won’t waiver over his beliefs in how to lead a team. I can’t imagine the rubbish you would have written about Gasperini at Atalanta when his attacking football resulted in crazy scorelines. That would be if I can even read beyond the 40 pop-ups and ads on your website.

          Do better.
          Matt

          Big Ange criticism
          Hello,

Why do you insist on making preposterous statements concerning the ability of Tottenham’s visionary coach?

Ange Postecoglou has a successful style which is poised to sweep the PL.  His issue at present is that the players he inherited are not ideal for his system, neither in character nor in ability.

Give Ange his due praise instead of displaying your obvious lack of discernment.

          Regards,
          Jerzy Fila

Man Utd is not an office…
          Morning,

Interesting from Saby MUFC reading this morning. They might be on the clickbait hunt, but I have to say, MUFC is not an office and Amorim is not a middle manager.

Firstly, as a person who works in an office, if I witnessed sexual harrassment, theft, or some generalised gross miscounduct on my very first day, I wouldn’t wait a few months to get the lie of the land and then address it. Some things you just know aren’t good and a failure to address them immediately is poor management.

Secondly, writing a report on sales performance in various regions of the UK, or creating a mad spreadsheet looking at 18 month projected recruitment needs is not comparable to watching footballers on the training ground. The ability to send an email is not the same as the ability to instantly control, with one touch, a football fizzed to you whilst you’re in a tight space. My point: it takes longer to judge performance in an office than it does in a sport.

Thirdly, after the lassitude and lethargy of the last decade at United, I would venture that someone on the front foot is exactly what is needed, and this sqaud, the majority of whom simply don’t pass the eyeball test when watching, needs signifcant change. Implementing a system that you know works is a reasonable approach, and if that also begets a reset of playing staff, well, then I’d say that’s a positive.

Further, how can have a stable team when you don’t yet know the players? If there is a failing there, and there is, it is the casual approach of the senior management in not removing Ten Hag ealry enough to give Amorim a pre season with the squad.

All of which said, agree with you totally ref Fernandes.

          Have a wodnerful Christmas all,
          Michael, The North

          MUST-READ ON FOOTBALL365…

…Does anyone else feel that maybe Amorim is “doing a Jose”? And by that I mean purposefully picking players who we know aren’t good enough in particular positions so it can be used as evidence to get rid?

I mean, Malacia has never really been good enough. A solid enough back up at full back but in midfield?

No one thinks Zirklee is a 9. And we have a 9 on the bench who has been doing well (are we saving him for something?), plus another not in the squad and seemingly destined to be pushed out but who is comfortable (and has been successful) as a 9.

No one thinks Garnacho is a 10. Dude cannot pass and simply doesn’t have that kind of vision or awareness. He’s an out and out winger.

No one thinks Eriksen is a hardworking central mid. He could likely do very nicely where Bruno gets to sit and misplace passes and shots. He can also take a decent corner and free kick. So obviously that’s not happening. We’ll let Bruno keep doing that as it’s working so well.

Casemiro? Nah. Collyer? Amass? Nah, both apparently are to be sold for a pittance if rumours are true.

We all knew (or at least, the sane non-plastic fans knew) this change would take time. And it requires a different type of player than we necessarily have in depth.

But it does start to feel like there’s some purposeful intent behind some of these selections. Either way, it’ll all come out in the wash, and this season is not the season to judge or build up huge expectations. Other than maybe to play the best suited players in their best available positions in matches we don’t need to concede so tamely.

          He HAS to go
          Dear Editor

I have been saying this for a year.   Ange Postecoglou is out of his depth in the Premier League.   It is all very well winning in the Aussie, Japanese and Scottish Premier leagues – the latter which have giants such as Hearts, St Johnstone and Dundee – but our Premier League is arguably the best in the world.

It is impossible to have a Plan B which is the same as your Plan A which doesn’t work.

2-0 up against Chelsea – albeit because Marc Cucurella misread the ground conditions, but the Aussie insisted on keep attacking instead of tightening up the midfield and adding protection to the defence.

In the Carabao Cup match against Man Utd, the game was won in the 55th minute – yet this inane system of short passing in the penalty area and mistakes by Forster left the result in doubt until the final whistle.

Who is daft enough to have high-line against Liverpool speedsters, Sala and Diaz.   While smiling sheepishly, Ange is adamant he will not change and any player not playing to this ‘system’ will be out.

I was writing a letter to Daniel Levy on Sunday evening, with match still with 20 minutes  from finishing.

          Here are two ‘HAVES’!

Tottenham HAVE to sack Ange and HAVE to make Bournemouth an offer for Andoni Ariola which they cannot turn down.

          Regards
          Jim Sokol

          On Spurs v Liverpool
Obviously, happy with the results on Sunday. I know the odds were always with us to be top at Christmas, and that that doesn’t really matter except for pride at this stage of the season but it’s nice to have the lead and the points buffer back.

But: Am I the only Liverpool fan who watched those first two Spurs goals going in and thought: “Kelleher would have saved that”?

It used to be that I would watch Kelleher’s games seeing goals going in and thinking “Alisson would have had that” more recently, I’m watching saves and thinking “Alisson wouldn’t have got that”.

I know the history of how great Alisson has been, and still is compared with most, I just don’t think he’s our best keeper any more and I think we might be about to nudge our best keeper out of the door by not recognising him. Worse still, Kelleher could sign for a rival and still be helping them beat us to trophies in six or seven years’ time.

There’s a lot of talk about contracts and maybe losing big names like Virgil, Mo or Trent and they matter, but so does Kelleher and it seems that it’s not getting the same attention.

United have “started negotiations” to land academy gem’s compatriot, “formal offer” expected soon – report

            united-have-“started-negotiations”-to-land-academy-gem’s-compatriot,-“formal-offer”-expected-soon-–-report

A second highly-rated youngster is set to swap Mali for Manchester with Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United poised to return to the African market, according to reports.

Earlier this year, United moved quickly to sign 18-year-old Sekou Kone from Malian side Guidars FC, and according to Africafoot, the club are looking to repeat the trick for his young compatriot Daba Diakité.

Diakité plays for Djoliba AC and, like Kone, is a defensive midfielder. He is described as “undoubtedly one of the most sought-after prospects by foreign clubs.”

And according to the report, the Red Devils are in pole position for the player, having “begun the process of signing” him. Africafoot credit this information as coming from a source very close to the player.

Diakité is considered “the best defensive midfielder playing in the Malian championship”, and is “getting closer and closer to the elite of international football.”

United’s only named competition for the 20-year-old comes from Egyptian side Pyramids FC, but it seems that the Old Trafford outfit are winning the race for his signature.

“The Red Devils leaders have started negotiations with Djoliba AC to recruit Daba Benoit Diakité,” it is claimed.

The timing seems perfect for a move as Diakité has only three months left on his contract, and United are “only waiting for the approval” of his current employers to “make a formal offer”. The report strongly suggests this is only a matter of time.

United making brisk moves for young players beyond the boundaries of Europe is an exciting change of pace in the club’s recruitment.

It was well-documented that the Red Devils had the opportunity to sign a teenage Moises Caicedo when he was still plying his trade in his native Ecuador.

Instead he was snapped up by Brighton and Hove Albion, who ended up selling him to Chelsea for over £100m.

The Peoples Person recently relayed that Kone was headed for Ajax until United hijacked the move at the last minute, and noted that in the past the club was sluggish in completing such deals.

There is an element of risk in any move for a young player, particularly when they are coming from a vastly different league but, in acquiring Kone and pursuing Diakité, United have adopted a fresh approach which could bear very exciting fruit.

Who has created the most chances in the Premier League in 2024/2025?

              who-has-created-the-most-chances-in-the-premier-league-in-2024/2025?

Here are the Premier League players to have created the most chances in the 2024/25 season.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has ruled the roost in the last two seasons. He’s not even in the top three yet.

We’ve included the chances created in total as well as the per 90 in brackets to separate the ties. Thanks to Fotmob for the stats.

              1) Cole Palmer (Chelsea) – 47 (2.9)
The sky is the limit for this young man. He already has 11 goals and six assists this season and will take some catching here.

              2) Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) – 42 (3.0)
Seventh in 2021/2022, sixth in 2022/2023 and fourth last season so we’re expecting Starboy to at least make the podium this term.

              3) Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa) – 39 (2.4)
Tielemans was complaining about his game time under Unai Emery months after joining Villa. He’s not complaining anymore.

              4) Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) – 38 (2.4)
Man United’s most important player needs to find his place under Ruben Amorim and if the Portuguese head coach can get his compatriot flying, the Red Devils might sneak a top-half finish.

              5) Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham) – 37 (2.5)
Kulusevski has been Spurs’ best player by a country mile this season. Without him, Big Ange would probably be unemployed.

              6) Leif Davis (Ipswich) – 37 (2.2)
All I see is Alfie Doughty.

              7) Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) – 36 (2.5)
His head may have been turned by Liverpool during the summer but he’s now very much back to focusing on Newcastle. Gordon should have more than three assists this season.

              8) Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) – 36 (2.1)
Bowen might be West Ham’s greatest Premier League player ever. The debate is there to be had, anyway.

              9) Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) – 34 (2.2)
Silva and City have been poor but these are some pretty solid numbers.

              10) Andreas Pereira (Fulham) – 33 (2.9)
Came fifth last season and remains a criminally underrated creator, both in open play and over a dead ball. Was linked with Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Newcastle over the summer and recently controversially admitted he could have joined Marseille.

Dwight McNeil also has 33 chances created but averages fewer per game (2.6).

Manchester United’s derby win has been followed by back-to-back defeats as well as the stunning revelation that Marcus Rashford wants to leave his boyhood club.

In an interview given a couple of days after he was left out of the squad for the Manchester derby, the Englishman revealed his desire for a new challenge.

The news has not impressed Ruben Amorim, who has proceeded to drop him for three games in a row, nor the dressing room with INEOS currently backing the head coach’s stance.

The Red Devils will seriously consider bids of £50 million to £60 million for the forward but the figure coupled with the player’s humongous £375,000 per week wages (as per capology) has already seen Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain leave the race.

Rashford’s future up in the air

Saudi Arabian teams are interested but the 27-year-old has no intention of trading Europe for the Middle East at this stage of his career.

Loan offers are unlikely to be sanctioned as the Red Devils plan on utilising the money raised from the sale to go out and buy an elite replacement.

Talks of a swap deal with Victor Osimhen heading to Old Trafford have surfaced as relayed by The Peoples Person but it remains to be seen if such a deal materialised in January.

Teamtalk have now revealed that Fenerbahce have also entered the race with former United boss Jose Mourinho keen to bring the England international to Turkey.

Rivals Galatasaray had also expressed their desire to acquire Rashford but both Turkish giants would struggle to pay United’s asking price and the wages.

“Sources have revealed to TEAMtalk that Man Utd are not trying to force Rashford’s exit but would seriously consider bids of £50 million to £60 million for him.

“Rashford has interest from several clubs. Paris Saint-Germain have maintained contact with his agents and he is considered a prime target for the French giants.

                Fenerbahce want Rashford

“Sources say that Fenerbahce, who are managed by former Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho, have also shown interest in Rashford. They haven’t held talks with the player’s agents yet but are keeping close tabs on his situation.

“Rashford’s wages and price tag would be too expensive for the Turkish side so a loan with an option to buy would be preferable for them. If the Red Devils agree to pay a portion of Rashford’s salary a deal COULD happen next month.”

Fenerbahce’s record buy is former United loanee Sofyan Amrabat, who they acquired last summer for €22 million, a far cry from United’s asking price.

Ideally, a loan with an option to buy set at a lower price point might work with United having to cover a portion of his wages. Whether INEOS accept such a proposition remains to be seen.

“When I feel it is right, I will change something”: Amorim drops major hint on Rashford’s involvement for Wolves game

                  “when-i-feel-it-is-right,-i-will-change-something”:-amorim-drops-major-hint-on-rashford’s-involvement-for-wolves-game

Manchester United are set to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing day on the back of consecutive defeats where the club has conceded seven goals.

Wolves, though languishing in the relegation zone, enjoyed a new manager bounce and thrashed Leicester City at the weekend and as expected, they will be up for the game at the Molineux Stadium.

It is a hugely important game for the Red Devils but the media did not seem to care as most of the questions Ruben Amorim had to face during the pre-match press conference centred around the future of Marcus Rashford.

The Mancunian has been dropped for three games in a row and has since come out and publicly acknowledged his desire to leave his boyhood club.

                  Rashford absence to continue?

When asked whether he could feature against the team from West Midlands, Amorim did not give a straight answer but hinted that the forward will continue to remain on the sidelined.

“When I feel that it is the right moment, I will change something. Until then, I will continue to think what is the best for the team.”

When pressed further on whether the pair had spoken regarding that infamous interview, the head coach said, “I speak with them every day. Not about the interview, about the performance.

“I spoke with a lot of players individually during training so I’m trying to do things. I try now doing things my way. It’s the only way I know. If I don’t do that, I will lose myself and I will not lose myself. I know what I am doing.”

As seen from the media’s obsession with the issue and the number of articles being printed about Rashford, there is a danger of it becoming a distraction with the dressing room reportedly not too pleased with the timing of the interview.

But Amorim has played down such thoughts. “No, I don’t think so. Not for me, not for the other players, because everybody is there every day during training so they understand and that is the key point.

Rashford issue becoming a distraction for players?

“For the media and for the other people, I cannot control that but I’m really focused and they know I’m so clear in my message, everybody in Carrington knows what I’m talking about and what I want from Marcus and everybody else. So, he’s not a distraction for us. Maybe it’s for the media but that is not my concern.”

He also outlined what he wanted to see from Rashford and all the other big-name stars who have been at the club for a long time in order to steer the club out of the bottom half of the table.

“Like any other player, the best that they can be. If you have big talent, big performance, big responsibility, big engagement, like push forward everybody.

“In this moment some guys have a big responsibility here because they are here for a long time. So, this is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club so we have to face it and be strong in this moment – that’s what I want from every player in the team.”

Amorim has not been afraid to rotate his squad for game to game and as seen from the defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and the Bournemouth, things have not always worked out.

But the Portuguese backed his approach and revealed that changes were not only because he wants to give players a chance but also to avoid injuries, something predecessor Erik ten Hag suffered from a lot.

Rotation or plan to avoid injury

“No, but in this moment, it’s not rotation to see the players and prepare the future, it’s simply to not have injuries. Matta [Matthijs de Ligt] is sick.

“Harry Maguire did 90 minutes against [Manchester] City and cannot play three days before because in three months he only did 90 minutes one time against City, so we have to rotate him during the week and, today, he is playing.

“Kobbie Mainoo played, he returned from injury, so I have to think if he’s ready to cope with both games so sometimes I have to play two games at the same moment. Rasmus [Hojlund] played two games, the third game today I think we needed fresh legs.

“So, we are trying to address everything. I just want to win games because I know that there’s a long-term project and we are focused on that. But I also know that in big clubs you don’t have a lot of time, and you have to win games.

“So, I have a clear idea of the responsibility I have here but I’m trying to manage this team to not have injuries. If we have injuries, it’s a massive problem in trying to win games and manage all the players so I’m not rotating to see the future. I just want to win games and not have injuries. If we have injuries, it’s a big problem.”

INEOS showing decisiveness: United “hijacked” Ajax’s deal late on for highly-rated midfield talent – Fabrizio Romano

                    ineos-showing-decisiveness:-united-“hijacked”-ajax’s-deal-late-on-for-highly-rated-midfield-talent-–-fabrizio-romano

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim demands intensity from all his players and midfield is one area in serious need of a revamp.

Both Christian Eriksen and Casemiro do not look like they are the best fits for what the Portuguese is trying to build and he is slowly phasing both of them out.

The Dane has started only twice since Amorim took charge while the Brazilian has not made it off the bench for the last four Premier League games with a January exit possible for both.

Amorim has already demanded two midfielders from INEOS in the winter and if the new co-owners cannot get someone over the line, the solution could come from within the club.

                    Academy recruitment

Since INEOS took control of sporting affairs, the club have forsaken their policy of signing big-name players in favour of trying to unearth the next gem as seen from their deals for Leny Yoro in the first team.

Academy recruitment has also got a shot in the arm under the new owners as seen from deals for Chido Obi and highly-rated midfielder Sekou Kone in the summer.

The Malian was a surprise acquisition from Guidars FC and now, as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils had to stave off competition from Ajax for the 18-year-old.

The Dutch giants had almost agreed a deal only for the 20-time English league champions to arrive late to the scene and act decisively to win the race. There was also interest from an unnamed Bundesliga outfit.

“Manchester United hijacked Ajax’s deal for Sekou Kone to bring the young midfielder to Old Trafford in the summer,” Romano told GIVEMESPORT.

“Sources who want to remain secret to protect their relationships guarantee that Ajax almost had a deal in place for Kone only for Man Utd to arrive on the scene late and match their offer, before convincing the youngster to head to England instead.”

United hijacked Ajax’s deal for Kone

Romano also added that earlier, United would usually dilly-dally with transfer negotiations but that is no longer the case under INEOS.

Kone is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play further forward and caught everyone’s attention with his performances in the U17 World Cup where Mali finished third.

He had trained with the first team back when Erik ten Hag was in charge and he has also been registered in United’s Premier League squad.

The Mali U17 international is currently injured and this break is helping him acclimatise to his new surroundings with United happy with his development.

Man Utd thrashed at Wolves? More Spurs madness? How Boxing Day 2024 could mirror 1963

                      man-utd-thrashed-at-wolves?-more-spurs-madness?-how-boxing-day-2024-could-mirror-1963

                      It’s perhaps the most famous set of results in English football history: 1-5, 6-1, 10-1, 2-0, 6-1, 3-3, 3-0, 4-4, 2-8, 3-3.

No, it’s not Tottenham’s last 10 results in all competitions, but the First Division results from Boxing Day 1963, the silliest of all days. Sixty-six goals across 10 games, with twice as many teams scoring three or more goals as managed one or fewer. A brilliant thing, and alas a bar no subsequent Boxing Day could match.

This, though, is already confirmed as the most batsh*t Premier League season ever and if anyone can live up to the boys of 63, it’s the 2024/25 Barclays. So we’ve considered the eight games on offer, and assigned them each one of those 1963 efforts. Yes it is handy we don’t have to include the 10-1 because of that. We don’t just make up our rules on the spot, you know.

Just be grateful we haven’t done 16 Conclusions on these made-up results, because we’re absolutely not above that kind of thing as you know.

                      Manchester City 2-0 Everton
                      1963: Leicester 2-0 Everton

Easy one to start. A full eight years before his birth, 1963 Everton were already channelling their inner Sean Dyche and refusing to play any part in the Utter Woke Nonsense going off around the country, contenting themselves with a disappointing but entirely regulation 2-0 defeat at Leicester.

Everton were one of only two teams not to score on that famous Boxing Day 61 years ago, and that’s also something they’ve managed to achieve in six of their last seven games here and now. Let’s gloss over the fact they accidentally scored four in the other one.

Four of Everton’s last six games have ended 0-0 and had there been such an option on the 1963 classifieds we’d have had it; if you can shut down Arsenal and Chelsea as Dycheball has in the last couple of weeks you can surely do the same to this pale imitation of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Does seem a bit wild that this is the most regulation, vanilla prediction among all this nonsense and it’s one of the ones we’re least sure about because City scoring twice against Everton seems just absurdly far-fetched right now.

                      Bournemouth 3-3 Crystal Palace
1963: Nottingham Forest 3-3 Sheffield United

Excuses in first: this is the one we’re least happy about. But one of the key quirks of the 1963 results is that the only home wins available to us are 2-0, 3-0, 6-1 or 10-1. We don’t think Bournemouth, good as they are, are going to win 6-1 (or, indeed, 10-1) against Crystal Palace, bad as they are. And the 2-0 and 3-0 both have more compelling contenders elsewhere.

But we’re not about to go suggesting Palace might win this 8-2 as title-chasing Blackburn did at West Ham all those years ago either. So we’re a bit stuck really. Doesn’t leave us with much anywhere else to go than the 3-3 draw Forest and the Blades offered up.

It’s not an absolute madness as suggestions go, though. Bournemouth have scored exactly three goals three times in the Premier League this season, and conceded exactly three goals twice. Palace did score three at Brighton recently, before conceding eight goals across two games against Arsenal.

We’ve almost talked ourselves into actually believing this one.

                      Chelsea 3-0 Fulham
                      1963: Sheff Wed 3-0 Bolton

The West London posers were two of the biggest contributors to the 1963 silliness, scoring 15 goals between them. Fulham got 10 of those against Ipswich, who might be grateful to escape on a technicality here by not playing Arsenal until Friday.

However, if Fulham wanted to be considered live contenders for a key role in all this year’s predicted festivities then they should have thought about that before spending 90 minutes struggling to find their arsehole with both hands against Southampton of all teams. That is simply not the way to go about getting us to predict they might score a whole load of goals at Chelsea. They were fools to think it was.

No, Fulham right now have become altogether too dreary. Relentlessly competent off the ball but uninspiring on it, especially if Emile Smith Rowe isn’t there to add a little something, something.

Enzo Maresca’s hugely impressive Chelsea do have an undeniable capability for chaos, but we’d humbly suggest that manifests more often than not in being open to chaotic extravagance against teams who are more often and more proactively agents of chaos, rather than generating it themselves.

Thrashing Wolves and Southampton, for instance, or roaring back from a goal down against Brighton to score four by half-time. And most obviously with whatever that absurdity was at Tottenham.

Against less chaos-inclined opposition, Chelsea have rarely brought their own to the table. Perhaps the most obvious parallel for this Boxing Day test in Chelsea’s recent efforts was the Villa game, with Unai Emery’s men unable at that time to fully emerge from a funk that left their football on the dreary side of staid. And the fact we’ve crowbarred that in because it enormously conveniently finished 3-0, the only remaining non-nonsense home win we’ve got to choose from, is neither here nor there.

                      Newcastle 3-3 Aston Villa
                      1963: Wolves 3-3 Aston Villa

Another nice straightforward chance to use one of the teams involved 61 years ago when selecting our scoreline for what is, on paper, the game of the day.

As noted by Steven Chicken in Big Boxing Day, we’ve a sneaking feeling that both teams’ recent resurgence makes this a ‘take a draw’ kind of affair that allows both teams to rumble on to the next game with momentum retained and positive vibes in place.

Of course, this is Boxing Day 1963 we’re talking about. So both teams being happy to settle for a point means the game ends 3-3. In fairness, Newcastle have scored 15 and Aston Villa 10 across their last five games respectively, which makes 3-3 seem slightly less outlandish than it otherwise might. And it was also the scoreline the last time a good team – Liverpool – visited St James’ Park. To be honest, it’s starting to look nailed-on.

                      Nottingham Forest 4-4 Tottenham
                      1963: West Brom 4-4 Tottenham

A wonderfully entertaining Spurs team travelled to the midlands on Boxing Day 1963 and emerged with a madcap 4-4 draw. The 2024 version of Spurs are so absurd that such an outcome from another trip to the midlands 61 years later would, if anything, be slightly underwhelming for a team whose last four games have involved losing 4-3 at home from 2-0 up against Chelsea, scoring five goals before half-time at Southampton, attempting to lose from 3-0 up and eventually tripping over themselves to a 4-3 win against Manchester United and contriving a situation where their defeat against Liverpool could entirely accurately be described as ‘only 6-3’.

If you’ve ever wondered how Spurs are so good at being Spurs, it’s because they’ve been doing it for so long. They went into that West Brom game back in 1963 in great shape in the title race, went ahead in the third minute and held two-goal leads on three separate occasions before ending up with only a single point to show for it. The one difference between 1960s Spurs and the current pack of plonkers – admittedly a significant one – is that the 1960s version did still win things.

Clearly there’s no great leap of imagination required to picture Spurs playing out a 4-4 draw, especially one in which their game management is laughably poor, but do Forest have it in them? That’s admittedly less clear for a team that is just quite simply good and has neither scored nor conceded four times in a single game this season. But we can get there. Forest have, for instance, both scored and conceded three in a game at some point in the last few weeks, and once you factor in the Spurs nonsense multiplier it’s perfectly easy to imagine how Forest could both score and concede one more than that. If you can win 3-2 at Man United, you can absolutely draw 4-4 with Spurs.

                      Southampton 1-5 West Ham
                      1963: Blackpool 1-5 Chelsea

Okay fine, there’s very flimsy evidence that we can expect this kind of thing from West Ham. We are forced here to lean far, far too heavily on a 4-1 home win against Ipswich nearly three months ago. But there’s no denying West Ham retain the requisite component parts to perform a madness even under the stifling not-sacked-yet gaze of the Spanish Moyes, Julen Lopetegui.

And really, we don’t actually need to know that West Ham can score five away when we know with such absolute certainty that Southampton can concede five at home. Especially to London clubs. It’s happened twice this month already.

                      Wolves 6-1 Manchester United
                      1963: Burnley 6-1 Manchester United

A proud, old powerhouse of English football giving Manchester United an absolute shoeing? We’re in. With the Gary O’Neil shackles well and truly thrown off, who among us would truly be surprised to see Wolves the latest club to inflict defensive misery on Ruben Amorim’s baffled back three? Not us, that’s for sure.

Wolves have fleetingly shown themselves to be a side with goals in them – they got four at Fulham a while back, didn’t they? And another three at Leicester this week. And most importantly Manchester United’s current players simply cannot yet defend coherently or cohesively in Ruben Amorim’s preferred formation. They’ve conceded seven goals across their last two game and unfortunately for them it is DEFINITELY about to get even worse.

                      Liverpool 6-1 Leicester
                      1963: Liverpool 6-1 Stoke

Obviously Liverpool can’t hope to play against a team as stupid as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham every game, but they do get to do it two games in a row this Christmas thanks to their next assignment being against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester.

They’ve conceded seven goals across their last two games against Newcastle and Wolves, and must now make a significant step up in class against a team absolutely rammed full of confidence after getting all those lovely presents at Spurs.

We must admit we were tempted by the 10-1 here, but the neatness of another 6-1 Liverpool win to match that Stoke mauling back in the day gets the nod. It is also, we will just about accept, probably very, very, very slightly more likely. But we really are not ruling out the 10. We’re going to be kicking ourselves, aren’t we?
