Manchester United secured a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup after an outstanding defensive display saw them dump Arsenal out of the competition at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Amorim’s side took the lead through a fine Bruno Fernandes strike before Gabriel’s deflected effort drew the home side level.

The game burst into life with an incident-packed second period that included a Diogo Dalot red card and a Martin Odegaard penalty miss, alongside the two goals that followed a forgettable first period.

Odegaard’s spot-kick was expertly saved by United stopper Altay Bayindir, after referee Andrew Madley pointed to the spot under highly controversial circumstances.

Madley fell for Kai Havertz’ act of manipulating contact with Harry Maguire in the United penalty area which sparked a mass brawl between the two sets of players.

With no VAR to overturn the obvious error, United were enraged and the players started targeting Havertz out for his blatant dive.

Manuel Ugarte was one of the first on the scene to confront the German, with pictures and videos later emerging which showed the United man appearing to push his head into the face of Havertz.

The ‘headbutt’ came after Havertz had put his hands around the Uruguayan’s neck with replays not particularly favourable for either party.

As reported by The Mirror, Ugarte could now face a retrospective ban for his actions with the FA looking into the incident in the coming days.

Ugarte was perhaps fortunate VAR was not present in North London with most acts of potential violent conduct punished with a straight red card nowadays.

However, no harm was ultimately done to either player with Havertz playing as much, if not more, of a role in the incident.

Should the midfielder be found guilty, he could miss up to three games for United which would represent a huge blow to Ruben Amorim’s plans.

Ugarte has been in impressive form over the last few weeks and is now arguably the first name on the teamsheet at Old Trafford.

United will hope the FA look impartially into the matter and punish Havertz instead and not punish the 23-year-old as the club aim for a strong second half of the campaign.

Napoli make first ‘offer’ of £38m for Man Utd star as Kvaratskhelia ‘nears PSG transfer’

Man Utd have received a first offer from Napoli for the services of Alejandro Garnacho as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gets closer to leaving the Serie A club, according to reports.

There have been rumours that the Red Devils are willing to listen to offers for almost all of their players over the January transfer window as they look to balance Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Marcus Rashford has revealed that he is ready to discover a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford, while Man Utd stars Kobbie Mainoo, Garnacho and others have been linked with transfers elsewhere.

And, with Paris Saint-Germain set to sign Kvaratskhelia from Napoli, the Serie A club’s boss Antonio Conte has now ‘chosen’ Man Utd winger Garnacho as their replacement for the Georgian.

ESPN journalist Julien Laurens confirmed earlier today that Kvaratskhelia is ‘nearing a move’ to PSG with Napoli now looking for a replacement.

      Laurens wrote:

‘Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is nearing a move to Paris Saint-Germain, a source has told ESPN, with the two clubs set to meet on Monday to finalise the deal.

‘A source told ESPN the deal is likely to be worth between €60 million ($61m) and €65m for the Georgia international who was the best player in Serie A when Napoli ended their 33-year wait for the Scudetto in May 2023.’

      Laurens added:

‘Kvaratskhelia has already agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 leaders over a five-year contract. His deal at Napoli expires in June 2027 — the club had wished extend his contract but he refused.’

And now Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has confirmed that Napoli ‘offers €40+5’ for Garnacho but that Man Utd ‘asks for more’ from the Serie A side.

Garnacho is now their ‘big target’ for the January transfer window with Kvaratskhelia ‘destined’ for PSG and Napoli ‘has already offered 45 million euros (£38m)(including bonuses) for the very talented 2004-born player’.

Man Utd have insisted on €60m but the Pedulla claims that ‘the valuation could drop’, while the journalist also reveals interest from Juventus.

      Pedulla continued:

‘There is a behind-the-scenes story that needs to be told: Juventus, bewitched by Garnacho, have inquired about Garnacho, the idea was, would be or will be to try for next summer, perhaps working on him in these weeks.’

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker doubts Garnacho “would be missed too much” if he were to leave in the winter transfer market.

Parker told Betfred: “Regarding Garnacho, if someone new were to come in, I don’t think he holds the same as Mainoo. Would he be missed in that sense? I would personally say no, not at all really, and doubt he would be missed too much if he were to go.

“It appears that he is already looking for that move anyway and will go once he thinks that a big club abroad is going to be better than Manchester United. I think he will only find out once he gets there that it won’t be the same. He will understand that where he is now is virtually as good as it gets, and he needs to show everything.”

Ruben Amorim repeats Sir Alex ploy as Marcus Rashford gets ‘message’

What has Ruben Amorim done now? Well he’s repeated something Sir Alex Ferguson ‘practically pioneered’ of course…

        Revelations
‘Ruben Amorim reveals the vital change his Man United side made during FA Cup win over Arsenal compared to their defeat in December – and hails the ‘hero’ behind their ‘suffering’ victory’, apparently.

It can only be a MailOnline headline. But it’s essentially bollocks.

Amorim does not reveal a ‘vital change’ that he or anybody else made during that very impressive backs-to-the-wall win over Arsenal, he merely said: “We showed a different spirit, even with 10 men. We are improving on that aspect.”

Sometimes managers are really quite dull and on this occasion Ruben Amorim was really quite dull. He ‘revealed’ the square root of f*** all.

Baby you can drive my car
But then MailOnline received images of Manchester United players in their cars and hey presto!

‘GRIN WHEN YOU’RE WINNING! Ruben Amorim leads Man United car-pooling celebrating stars on late-night return to Manchester Airport after Arsenal penalty win – and reveals the ‘vital’ change he made’

A few small things to note:

        1) Not a single person in the pictures is GRINNING. Or even grinning. Ruben Amorim is sporting something akin to a grimace at best, presumably because some f***er is taking pictures of him when he just wants to get home.

        2) They are definitely not ‘celebrating’; they just look a bit knackered. It had been a long day.

        3) Four players are sharing two cars. Does this qualify them as ‘Man United car-pooling celebrating stars’? Despite what James Corden would have you believe, ‘carpooling’ usually involves more than two people in a car.

Anyway, it’s apparently the biggest story in football that some footballers drove some cars. Or in Joshua Zirkzee’s case, that he was ‘driven away by an unknown individual’. Mysterious.

        Phwoar
The Manchester United players did not stop for waiting fans but Ruben Amorim did, leaving the Manchester Evening News fawning…

‘What Ruben Amorim told Manchester United fans after Arsenal win shows they have the right manager’

And what did Amorim tell Manchester United fans?

They were very tired, Amorim stressed, and needed to sleep ahead of Southampton’s visit on Thursday.

Immediately turning to the next one is a trait Sir Alex Ferguson practically pioneered. Amorim is demonstrating his United managerial credentials every week.

The exceptionalism is extraordinary. Apparently no football manager even thought of the next game until Ferguson came along. And none of them have done that since.

And especially not Erik ten Hag…

‘In his post-match press conference following the draw, Ten Hag said he is now turning his attention to the upcoming clash with Forest on Sunday’ – Man Utd official website, April 2023.

‘No sooner had Manchester United sealed a third-place Premier League finish in Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign than the Dutchman was already focussed on the next fixture’ – 90Min, May 2023.

‘Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag made clear that whilst the away win over Burnley will give his side confidence, all the attention must now turn to our upcoming fixtures’ – Man Utd official website, September 2023.

It’s almost like it’s the biggest cliche in football and actually not evidence that Manchester United have the right manager. The actual result might be the key there.

Never EVER have I ever felt so low…
Over to the Mirror now and they really do try to make a mountain out of a dull Ruben Amorim molehill.

Asked if Marcus Rashford – who wants to leave Manchester United and who Manchester United want to sell – might have played his last game for Manchester United, Ruben Amorim said: “I don’t know…I don’t know, we’ll see. He is a player for Manchester United. We’ll see.”

Put that through the magic clickbait Reach machine and we get:

Ruben Amorim refuses to guarantee Marcus Rashford will EVER play for Man Utd again

He would look really, really bloody ridiculous if he did, guys…

These (five/six) words are my own…
Talking of Marcus Rashford, it has become obvious that the prospect of a ‘reunion’ with Dele has not taken him to Como. Shocker.

But while one former England teammate fades into the background, another comes to the fore. And it’s worth noting that Rashford has played alongside Fikayo Tomori one whole time for England so he really does qualify as an ‘England team-mate’. Or it does if you work for the Mirror as a ‘Senior Sports Writer – Under 35s’.

‘Marcus Rashford sent clear five-word message by England team-mate about AC Milan’

Has Fikayo Tomori taken it upon himself to message Rashford about moving to Milan? Maybe. But the Mirror is not privy to that information…

Has Fiyako Tomori spoken in public about the possibility of Rashford moving to Milan? Has he balls.

Did Fikayo Tomori speak about his move to Milan in early December, two weeks before Rashford even said he wanted to leave Manchester United and over a month before Milan was even mentioned as a possible destination? You know the answer…

‘Marcus Rashford has been told by AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori that moving to the Serie A was the “the best decision” he has made.’

Well, he told ITV. Does that count?

‘Former Chelsea star Tomori insists that moving to Italy could be the new lease of life Rashford needs.’

Yes, he absolutely ‘insisted’ a month before it was first mooted that Rashford would thrive in Milan. Now that’s what we call prescient.

We’re here now though, so let’s hear this ‘five-word message’ that was not remotely a message: “It’s the best decision I made.”

        Erm…

United “seriously considering” swoop for 17-goal deadly hitman who is set to become a free agent in the summer – report

Manchester United are desperately in need of goals and are “seriously considering” a move for Lille striker Jonathan David to address the problem, according to reports in Italy.

The Canada international has entered the last six months of his contract and is sure to be on the move come summer, and United are thought to be at the head of the queue to bring him in.

According to TuttoJuve, the striker “represents a golden opportunity for Manchester United who are seriously considering the option of making a move for the Les Dogues hitman.”

The report adds that “it looks like there will be a frantic race” for the player who “Juventus also like.”

With both goals and money in seemingly short supply at Old Trafford, David on a free transfer could be a masterful piece of business.

The 24-year-old has bagged 17 goals in 28 matches for Lille this season as he continues to build his reputation as one of the deadliest strikers in Europe.

He has scored 26 goals in each of the last two seasons, showing a consistency United’s current crop of forwards can only dream of.

It is thought that Lille would rather lose their talismanic forward for free at the end of the season rather than accept a fee for a January switch, as reported by Fabrizio Romano back in November.

The respected journalist reported that a contract offer had been made to the player, but the expectation remained that he would leave on a free in the summer.

The Red Devils have been desperately poor at the sharp end of the pitch this season, managing only 23 goals in the Premier League – only four teams have scored fewer, and two of those are in the relegation zone.

Joshua Zirkzee was signed in the summer to add to United’s firepower but has struggled to adapt to life in English football, managing just four goals from 29 appearances in all competitions.

Rasmus Hojlund has also looked out of his depth this season but has slightly better stats, with seven goals in 24, and the contributions from other attackers have been reasonable at best.

The Mikel Arteta project has ‘stalled’; could he walk away from Arsenal?

The pressure is piling on Mikel Arteta after that defeat to Man Utd, while the refereeing comes in for some criticism.

Can the ignominious Arteta end be avoided?
Those of us who have watched Arsenal closely over the last few years have cited various reasons which indicated Mikel Arteta is not the finished product as a manager. Which is a shame as his return to manage the club to glory would have been a storybook ending. However, it has now become apparent to most this promise has dead-ended.

Some have taken to blaming the Kroenkes for a lack of ambition but I call BS on that. They gave Arteta and Edu three quarters of a billion to succeed and the only thing they are guilty of (as somewhat absentee owners) is a naive belief in Arteta. They should have picked up on warning signs and not extended Arteta’s contract until the end of this season. If they had waited the situation and shortcomings would have revealed themselves.

That said I am, like most Arsenal fans, fond of Arteta and I would prefer things did not end on an embarrassing note.

I would prefer Arteta admit to himself that he has at least temporarily run out of ideas for the club, talk to the Kroenkes and then make a public announcement he would leave Arsenal at the end of the season. Arteta could then reflect and regroup, continue his career elsewhere as he would certainly receive offers quickly.

But if Arteta hangs on, or if the Kroenkes do not take action the situation will turn increasingly toxic. The problem being many are afraid Arteta could take the ship down with him. If Arteta was replaced fairly soon then there is some hope the core of the team, the most talented would stick with Arsenal through a transition.

If this drags then the likes of Bukayo Saka and William Saliba could be tempted to leave for a handful of truly elite teams. The squad will diminish and this episode will be looked at historically as a flash in the pan – that Arsenal reemerged brightly for a season or two and then were back to fighting for Champions League.

This is a massive window for Arteta
            A telephone rings in Mikel Arteta’s office….

            MA: Hello
Caller: Mikel, we have an exact clone of Lionel Messi available. Very cheap, you’ve got first refusal
MA: Can he play at full-back?
            Caller: Er? what?
MA: Can he play at full-back or anywhere across the defensive line?
Caller: I’m not sure that’s his strength to be honest. He’s a forward. He scores goals. Loads of ’em…
MA: I’m not seeing it. What’s the benefit to me?
Caller: You need a reliable goalscorer don’t you?
MA: Not unless he can play full-back. Will he be injured a lot?
            Caller: Hopefully not…
MA: Then he’s no use to me…

Absolute crap yesterday against Utd yesterday – who thoroughly deserved to win by the way – as once again, Arsenal showed that they need a reliable goalscorer. Who knew? Who could possibly have known this?

I know it’s not Arteta’s fault that Havertz missed two absolute sitters and that Declan Rice is shit at heading a football when in front of goal, but even when United were down to 10-men, despite having so much of the ball, Arsenal just looked toothless. No cutting edge, no mean streak, no obvious determination to score a goal no matter how. No plan B.

Pass, pass, pass, pass backwards, pass, pass, pass sideways, pass, pass, lose the ball…

I know the January window isn’t the best time to find a top class striker, but even an average one would be better than what we have now. I wish Gabriel Jesus well, but hope that his injury is the push Arteta needs to go and find someone. I like Kai Havertz, but a reliable goal scorer he is not. Martinelli isn’t good enough (in fact I’m worried he’s reached his full potential) and Trossard is ‘meh’ at best. Yes, Saka is injured, but you need a squad able to deal with these things. All teams suffer injuries.

Out of the FA Cup, probably out of the EFL Cup (in reality these were looking like our best opportunity for silverware), the Premier League looks unlikely as things stand and we’re clearly not good enough to win the Champions League.

I think the project has stalled. I think patience is running out.

            Karma police visited Havertz
Even though Havertz played like turd throughout, when he went lamely old school with the ol’ pre-VAR dive-and-kick-the-defender-to-con-the-ref penalty trick, you knew they would lose.

Karmic suicide. As he sheepishly avoided big Slabhead in the melee he must have thought, ‘f**k, this is being filmed’ and known he’d done enough to ensure Arsenal could now never win the game.

And so it played out as it was written. Havertz tries to cheat at home with a men extra and gets served luck-10 and has to wear the cursed amulet of the Fanny hole the rest of the game, lesser team away a man down gets powerboost+8, anger+10 and Turkish delight redemption cape to equip for the rest of the game.

Haven’t seen much mention of it but that was pathetic, get what you deserve Arsenal, even playing with 2 extra men Karma wins in the end and sadly there is your reason for VAR (even though there is no guarantee it would have been used to rectify the cheating) – A huge game deciding moment solely due to cheating.

Looooool at Zirkzee waving away Arsenal fans. Redemption all over the place.

Beating London Stoke is awful sweet
Well didn’t that turn out to be a most enjoyable game of football? I feared the worst after Dalot’s brainfart, but we dug deep and deservedly made it to penalties to make it a level playing field again.

The first half was cagey, we gave away some silly free kicks; between those and the corners they won, I expected Arsenal’s set-piece prowess (aka Pulis-ball) to make a difference. However, we defended those admirably all game – hopefully a sign of hard work on the training pitch paying off. Some of their chipped through balls were dangerous but we held a tight line and the overall shape of the team made us hard to break down.

We are still not doing enough going forward, with Hojlund often looking isolated and too much space between him and the two 10s behind. But it’s a work in progress, and kudos to Zirkzee who came on and held the ball up well before having the guts to take the last penalty.

No point me whingeing about some of the ropey calls made by the officials as we won, or highlighting the disparity in bookings and free kicks, although no complaints about the Dalot second yellow. I’m just relieved to still be in the cup, even with the obligatory tougher draw whilst City and Liverpool enjoy another bye into the next round. Quelle surprise!

…There will likely be many other similar mails, but let’s dive in.

It was a game almost ruined by a terrible biased ref: a penalty from a dive where the only contact was the diver standing on the supposed fouler (compounded by giving him a yellow); a second yellow for a “foul” where there’s literally no contact made; a foul not given for Bruno against a falling Jesus on the edge of the area (compounded by giving the victim a yellow card).

Throw in probably a dozen other laughable decisions and the refusal by the referee to deal with or punish Arsenal time wasting and playacting.

But there was some very good too: Garnacho managed a good pass after great harrying (2 in 2!); Bruno an excellent finish; De Ligt, Maguire and Martinez all played brilliantly with game saving tackles (particular praise for De Ligt though, what a tackle!); and Zirkzee (paired with a hard running Amad) completed a short redemption arc – not with a goal in open play, though he came close and deserved one with a beautifully physical performance – with the winning penalty.

Throw in another redemption by a keeper who blossomed from a previous terrible performance through a first half of nervous kicking, to the hero of the match with two penalty saves and some strong general keeping.

It’s one of those games you look back and can argue the merits of 3 or 4 players getting man of the match.

And past that, every player can take massive credit for excellent performances. Ugarte and Mazra were great, Mainoo tight and controlled, Højlund did good if unappreciated work up front (without his run that occupied the defenders, there wouldn’t be space for Bruno to finish).

And finally, thanks to Havertz and Arteta. Seriously, we’re very thankful. To steal a line I saw: if Havertz was shooting at Tupac, he’d be on to his 10th album by now. Justice tastes very sweet.

            A whinge about refereeing
That was some game. Somehow United managed to steal a win and Arsenal did their absolute best to duff a gimme. Albeit with some help from Havertz and Bayindir. And yes in the end United won but it was absolutely in spite of one of the poorest refereeing performances I have ever seen. It’s hard to remain objective as a United fan so I will just say that Mr Madley’s performance was completely rubbish; which seems to be backed up by neutral fans all over the internet.

Yes we know that Dalot made a shocker tackle and whichever end of the debate you sit on, that was a stupid stupid tackle to make on a yellow. I will, however, say that Mr Madley’s willingness to chuck out harsh yellows for nothingburger tackles made a Red card inevitable. It raises questions about Michael Oliver talking about not giving red cards/penalties in games of this magnitude; it seems that Mr Madley disagrees. His lack of consistency in calling fouls was obvious; Fernandes was clattered into and had his boot stood on by Gabriel Jesus and received nothing except a yellow for being understandably upset but on the other side Havertz received a penalty from Maguire’s interpretation of the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique from Kill Bill.

It would have been wildly unfair for United to lose against the worst penalty given in years but they got lucky with a touch of class from Bayindir and Havertz’ dogged determination to be utter cack.

So what’s the issue? Your team won, why are you complaining, the editor sighs exasperatedly. The issue is poor refereeing is affecting the game. Poor decisions affect teams and individuals; like Ten Hag getting fired after the shocker penalty against West Ham. Yes he lost his job because he was in the middle of a terrible run but that “penalty” lost him the match and any possibility, however slim, of turning the ship around was taken away. Period. Done. By a poor poor refereeing decision.

I am not claiming a conspiracy against United, it affects a lot of teams and I’m sure every fan has a story. So when will there be more scrutiny on the quality of refs? When will the PGMOL be audited, questioned, interviewed, changed……goddammit anything to fix what is an obvious stain on football at the moment.

We can cry about simulation but it’s the refs that need to crack down on diving. Havertz should have seen yellow for that and not rewarded for diving. But on the flip side refs need to call fouls as fouls because the current mindset of “Not A Foul Unless He Falls” is ridiculous.

At one point Gabriel had more contact with Hojlund on the halfway line than I could have with a stranger without it labelled sexual assault but there was no foul called because Hojlund stayed on his feet. Weak officiating encourages diving and the rolling around and the theatrics that we all claim to hate but never hold the real culprits to account for. In short Mr Madley brought out one of the worst officiating performances I have ever seen and a lot of the internet seems to agree which is odd why there wasn’t even a mention of it in 16 Conclusions.

There should be much more scrutiny from the Press and journos about this matter. You have the voice. You’re the Fourth Estate. I think it’s time that the conversation about refereeing becomes a bit louder. For all fans.

            Too harsh on Ten Hag
It’s a bit funny, I was reading the PL managers list and saw Ten Hag in last position and thought it was a bit harsh, and then read the Sunday mailbox and saw Badwolf’s email and I was glad there are fans with a bit more of a balanced view. I don’t think Ten Hag was the whole problem and very obviously something had to change, but clearly some of the performances under Amorim and what the people on the inside – Amorim and the players – are saying about being low on confidence show that the problem was not (necessarily) just Erik and it’s a hill I’m prepared to die on.

Last season Manchester United had probably the worst injury list of any team in the league, in 38 league games we started 30 different back 4s, while dealing with new players trying to bed in and players ageing. Suddenly confidence goes to shit and every mistake gets picked apart, and you try to play it safe and a mistake is made. This, in my opinion, fanned by the media, created a self-reinforcing doom loop that knocked all the confidence from the team which continued over the summer until the pressure became unbearable and, as I said, something had to change to exorcise the negativity around the club.

Yes, a lot of the criticism about tactics and set up was fair, much more of it was pretty much bullshit to drive more clicks. I think Ten Hag’s squad management and man management was lacking, but clearly with the early disciplinary actions needed by Amorim, it was not just a one way problem. Fact is ETH won us 2 trophies in 2 years, including the FA Cup against a much more fancied Man City. He deserves a bit more respect than being a whipping boy to drive up clicks.

On a separate note, I’m really happy for Harry Maguire who seems to have played himself back into some kind of form, confidence and reputation after becoming a bit of a laughing stock. I would hold my hands up to criticising his performances and inability to make simple passes in the past but I respected his fight to get back into the team, training with Ricardo Carvalho a few summers back and he looks genuinely like a decent defender right now with a bit of confidence about him.

How Ange cocked up at Tamworth
Amidst the latest Arsenal meltdown mails, and the torrent of Stewie-directed abuse, I’ll try to sneak in a mail with my thoughts on Spurs better-late-than-never win over Tamworth.

Let’s be fair: That was poor. I never subscribed to the idea that Tamworth would be scrubs who Spurs would swat aside. This is football, it’s 11 human beings against 11 human beings. And those Tamworth human beings, and their hundreds of fans huddled over that tiny little astro turf pitch were absolutely feverish for the biggest game in their history. This was a tricky test.

A tricky test, but still one Spurs should’ve been able to handle in 90 minutes. I’m glad Postecoglou went with a strong side. I expected Maddison to dominate, and while he was one of our better players, it was a shame to see him leave some chances behind.

I’ve been staunchly pro-Ange (and still am!) but yesterday I felt he made some selection mistakes.

Werner. Oh my God, Werner. I wouldn’t have minded Werner starting out LW, doing his one-trick-pony kick and chase thing, down past the full back to stretch their legs, but to play him as a central striker, trying to do the things we expect of Solanke made him look like the worst player on the pitch. How he was selected there over even Lankshear (or a fit-again Richarlison?) was crazy.

Porro. I’m a Porro fan, but the man has played too much football. He looks jaded, and that will turn into mistakes. A fit Porro is a brilliant player, but the one we got yesterday is an error prone, fatigued Porro. Should’ve been rested.
But rather than focus on the negatives (as I’m sure most journalists, many mailboxers, and surely Dave Tickner will do this week, with a good laugh over Spurs) I’m gonna focus on the most important stat: the win.

People can criticise Spurs quality, but the reality is, as soon as Son Solanke, Kulusevski were on the pitch together, it was 3-0 in 20 minutes. It’s just a shame those guys couldn’t get the day off.

Spurs are through. We’re gonna go into February still in 3 Cups. How you progress doesn’t matter, all that matters is that we do progress. In the league cup, Spurs were on the verge of an embarrassing exit to Coventry in the first round, only for Djed Spence to return from exile to save us. We’ve followed that up with wins over City, United and Liverpool in that competition. A win is a win. In some ways, winning ‘ugly’ like that might even be good for that team!

Finally, the whole premise of ‘resting’ players was with a view to being fit for NLD on Wednesday. Our opponents had an even tougher fixture, which had injuries, and went all the way through extra-time before a devastating loss on penalties. Perfect.

Wrap Porro, Bissouma, Gray in ice til Wednesday, and we go again!

Amorim faces selection headache with United star set to miss PL match vs Southampton

Amorim faces selection headache with United star set to miss PL match vs Southampton

Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot is set to miss the Premier League clash against Southampton this Thursday night.

The Portuguese has once again been an ever-present in the United side this season.

He has already played 31 times in this campaign for the Red Devils, making two assists.

Dalot has struggled to live up to his fine performances of last season, when he won the Players’ Player of the Year award.

One of the contributing factors to Dalot’s drop in standards is that he has had to play in the unfamiliar role of left wing back in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

In the second half of the game against Arsenal yesterday he switched to a more familiar position on the right hand side but this hardly helped as he received two yellow cards in 16 minutes to get himself sent off.

The two cautions were as a result of two desperate lunges that he didn’t have to make.

While neither would go down as particularly dangerous tackles, it was a massive lapse in concentration that almost cost his side the win.

He will now serve a one-match suspension where he won’t be able to line up against bottom placed Southampton in the league on Thursday night.

Interestingly, Dalot was already suspended for the match as a result of the first yellow he picked up during the game, due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Amorim now has a selection headache over who will replace the player and he will have to consider whether it is best to risk Tyrell Malacia or switch Noussair Mazraoui to the left and play Amad Diallo as a wingback.

In spite of his error, it has been reported thar Amoirm values Dalot and wants to keep him at the club moving forward.

The former Porto man has spoken about his desire to bring more leadership to the team but he will need to cut out moments of madness like yesterday’s if he is to make good on this promise.

Official: United Women’s Academy Player of the year secures loan deal until end of season

Manchester United Women defender Lucy Newell has joined Blackburn Rovers on loan until the end of the season.

The Women’s side returned after the winter break in stunning form as they began their defence of the FA Cup title with a 7-0 romp over West Bromwich Albion.

As the team prepare for a packed schedule in January they have also been busy off the pitch, making some adjustments to their squad.

Long-term servant Hayley Ladd has already left for Everton on a permanent transfer.

She has been joined by youngster Emma Watson who has also departed for the Liverpool club but only on loan until the end of the season.

The club’s official website have confirmed that Newell is the next young star to be given the chance to prove themselves elsewhere and gain valuable first team minutes.

“Manchester United Women defender Lucy Newell has joined Blackburn Rovers on loan until the end of the season,” the club confirmed.

“Lucy signed her first professional contract with United Women in October 2024, on her 18th birthday” after impressing with West Brom in the third division last season.

She also played for the United under 21s and was a key part of their title success in 2024.

As a result, she won the Women’s Academy Players’ Player of the Year award for her fine efforts.

Newell has made numerous first team squads this season but is yet to get any playing time off the bench. The 18 year old will hope that her move to the second division will offer her significantly greater playing time.

Grace Clinton is a perfect example to follow as she spent last season out on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and has returned this season as one of United’s most important players.

In association with Planet Sport Bet, Robbie Savage will give us his own Winners and Losers from the weekend’s Premier League action…

Robbie was delighted for Joshua Zirkzee while Manchester United continued to offer encouragement, while Arsenal are once again urged to move for a striker and the FA are implored to reinstate FA Cup replays…

                  Robbie’s winners

My FA Cup winners from the third round are Manchester United and, in particular, Altay Bayindir and Joshua Zirkzee.

It was a fantastic performance from Manchester United with 11 men and even 10. It was a silly challenge from Diogo Dalot for his second yellow card but Bayindir excelled with the penalty save, and Zirkzee, after getting subbed against Newcastle after half an hour… after he came on, I thought he did exceptionally well.

I thought the Manchester United fans were absolutely class with him in the way they cheered him and the way they sang his name. For him to step up to score the winning penalty was absolutely brilliant.

A fortnight after being hooked and humiliated, Joshua Zirkzee is one of @RobbieSavage8‘s big winners after making himself an FA Cup hero for Manchester United… https://t.co/5uWEqDBVNC@planetsportbet pic.twitter.com/AIMrpfItU4

With no Premier League action, my other notable winners from the weekend’s action come from further down the divisions.

Plymouth were outstanding while knocking Brentford out of the cup. Brentford are so strong at home but Argyle, despite their struggles in the league and the turmoil around the change of manager, were brilliant while earning their first away win since April. To get Liverpool at home in the next round is no less than they deserved.

In League Two, Walsall are charging to promotion, a whopping 13 points clear at the top after a 5-1 win over Tranmere. They’re unbeaten in 15, with Mat Sadler, who got a new contract last week while being linked with Plymouth, doing a fabulous job at the Bescot. Losing Nathan Lowe, who’s been recalled by Stoke is a blow, but Walsall are on a roll.

And, finally, a big mention for all the volunteers who helped get games on across the country this weekend. At Macclesfield, it took an almighty effort from almost 100 people, many of whom answered a call on social media for volunteers to help clear the snow. One lady, Sherri, brought her kids down and they were there until late on Friday, helping shift snow on their sledges. It just highlights the community feeling around our football clubs, especially in the lower tiers.

                  Robbie’s losers

The losers of this weekend’s football are Tamworth.

Yes, of course they are winners, but they have lost out despite taking Spurs to 90 minutes. It was 0-0. They were brilliant, they were magnificent.

It should have been a replay, but guess what? They have abolished cup replays. Tamworth, after all that hard work, after all that endeavour, they could have gone to Spurs and taken huge amounts of money.

So while I’ve got to say they’re winners, they’re also big losers. Bring back the replays!

Tamworth should be winners after taking Spurs to extra-time but they’ve lost out. Big time. Bring back FA Cup replays! pic.twitter.com/8ZT6beb2rI

There is much less doubt over which column Arsenal belong in after going out of the cup to 10-man Man Utd.

They had plenty of chances but, once again, a lack of cutting edge has cost them. Why did they not sign a striker in the summer? It has already cost them, but Mikel Arteta has to put that right this month. I suggested one for them last week.

My Macc scored twice against Tamworth in 90 minutes in the earlier rounds but Tottenham needed extra-time, which isn’t a good look on Spurs.

Losing to Plymouth was a blow for Brentford, especially given their home form, but the FA Cup offered the Bees a chance to build on their pedigree. Thomas Frank was very respectful of Argyle, and rightly so, but he must be seething at seeing his side go out like that.

Man Utd: Amorim dealt transfer blow with ‘frustrated’ star ‘chosen’ by Euro giants to replace £75m sensation

According to reports, Alejandro Garnacho could leave Manchester United as he’s been ‘chosen’ by Antonio Conte to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

20-year-old Garnacho is one of the best young players on the books at Old Trafford, but he has been linked with an exit in recent months.

His performances and attitude have been scrutinised this season and Ruben Amorim left him out of his squad to face Man City last month.

However, unlike Marcus Rashford, he appears to have responded to this snub professionally and he was handed a start against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Garnacho impressed for the Red Devils as he assisted Bruno Fernandes for Man Utd‘s goal as the 10-man side eventually triumphed on penalties.

Man Utd’s performances against Liverpool and Arsenal bode well moving forward, but a huge overhaul is still expected this year as Amorim builds his team.

With United having a ‘tight’ budget, it’s emerged that club chiefs are open to offers for most of their players as there are only two ‘untouchables’ in Amorim’s squad.

While United would prefer to keep Garnacho (who is said to be ‘frustrated’) and Kobbie Mainoo, they would be willing to sanction a pure profit sale if they receive a tempting bid and they could soon receive an offer from Napoli for the winger.

Napoli have been dealt a transfer blow of their own as head coach Conte revealed over the weekend that Kvaratskhelia has “asked” to leave the Serie A giants.

Conte said: “He asked the club to be sold. I’m disappointed.

“It was a bolt from the blue. I’m taking a step back. I don’t want him to think I’ve chained him here… We’re losing an important player.”

23-year-old Kvaratskhelia has emerged as one of the best wingers in Europe and has been linked with several elite sides in recent years.

The Georgia international has five goals and three assists in his 17 Serie A appearances this season and a report in Italy claims he’s in line for a 90 million euro (£75m) move to PSG.

The report also claims Garnacho has been ‘chosen’ by Conte and Napoli as an ‘ideal’ replacement for the talented winger.

‘Napoli has identified the successor to Kvara. The name is of Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United. Argentine naturalized Spanish, born in 2004, and with a valuation of 50 million euros.

‘The Sporting Director of the Neapolitans Manna is already working to open contacts with the Red Devils, but Conte has traced the path, having identified in the winger of the British team the ideal player to be able to collect the legacy of Kvaratskhelia now increasingly close to leaving Maradona to arrive at PSG.

‘The first few days of next week will be crucial to define in all its details the negotiations between Napoli and PSG for Kvicha Kvaratskhelia. Napoli’s departure request is around 90 million euros, but the negotiations between the two clubs are well underway despite a still quite significant valuation gap with the offer from the Parisians.’

Manchester United u19s moved into the second round of the Rewe Junior Cup on Sunday.

United finished day 2 tied at the top of the group on 15 points but went through in third place on goal difference.

Round 2 began with match against Fortuna Dusseldorf, who proved to be a tricky opponent as they used the boards well to get the ball in the box and crash the net.

They used one such occasion to open the scoring when their keeper’s shot went wide but fell to another player to finish off from close range.

Dusseldorf were deploying a player keeper to stay high up the pitch and pin United back, but Louie Bradbury took advantage with a quick release in his own half after a turnover that rolled into an open net as the keeper tried to recover.

Dusseldorf regained the lead with a penalty after opening the space off the boards again to work a shot that was blocked by Yuel Helafu’s hand.

Jim Thwaites then tied it up with a shimmy and a low strike to earn a 2-2 draw against a very tough and smart opponent.

Next up, United took on Schalke where they would need a win to advance.

After falling behind, United scored a great team goal with quick one touch passing that culminated with a finish from Bradbury.

But the German side’s class shown through as they responded with four unanswered goals including a hat-trick from Luca Vozar.

The final result of 1-5 saw United disappointingly exit from the tournament but proved a good experience for the youngsters to come up against German sides who are more experienced in indoor 5-a-side football.

Fortuna Dusseldorf went on to lift the cup with a 3-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the final, having drawn with United earlier in the day.

United’s top scorers for the weekend were Bradbury with 10, Thwaites with 6, and Dante Plunkett impressed with 4 goals as well.

                      United squad: 1 Byrne-Hughes, 2 Kamason (C), 3 Mills, 4 Helafu, 5 Plunkett, 6 McCormack, 7 Brown, 8 Shah, 9 Bradbury, 10 Thwaites
