Rashford or Walker: European giants must choose between two England stars, can’t sign both – The Athletic

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford may see his move to AC Milan scuppered by Manchester City’s Kyle Walker.

The English forward seems to have little future at Old Trafford as he was left out of the squad once again for United’s impressive FA Cup victory over Arsenal.

Rashford has been linked to numerous clubs but two of the most likely destinations appear to be AC Milan and FC Barcelona.

Both European giants would need to make adjustments to their playing squads and wage bill to ensure a deal could happen, however.

Former United striker and now senior adviser to AC Milan Zlatan Ibrahimovic has spoken out on potential rumours linking Rashford to Milan and stated, “everyone wants to play for Milan” and confirmed that they have interest in bringing the player to the San Siro.

Nonetheless, according to The Athletic, their interest in Kyle Walker could torpedo their chances of landing the United academy product.

Commenting on Walker’s potential move to AC Milan the publication report, “one subplot to all this is that, if a move to Milan were to happen, it would end their pursuit of Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.”

This is due to the fact that “they only have one spot remaining in their squad for a UK player.”

Therefore, it looks like they will have to make a choice to which player will be more valuable for their team moving forward.

As mentioned before, Barcelona are also very interested in the forward but will need to sell and free up wage space to complete a deal before the end of the window. Juventus’ pursuit of Ronald Araujo might help in this regard.

The Red Devils will also be praying someone makes a move as the 27 year old clearly has no role in Amorim’s plans. He has not played any part in the last seven matches and has failed to make the squad in six of these games.

In addition, United themselves need sales or at least getting salaries off the wage bill if they are to make their own moves in the January window, and the departure of Rashford would certainly help in this regard.

Man Utd accelerate transfer as ‘advanced talks’ commence to sign striker from Euro giants

Premier League side Man Utd are in ‘advanced talks’ over a potential swap deal for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been having a poor season with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 13th in the Premier League table after 20 matches.

One of the reasons for their lowly position in the Premier League is their terrible goals output with only Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich Town and Southampton scoring fewer than Man Utd this season.

Much of that blame has been put on the strikers with Marcus Rashford – who wants a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford – Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee all struggling to score consistently.

Zirkzee, in particular, has come in for stick after signing from Bologna for £36.5m in the summer transfer window, with the Netherlands international scoring just four goals in 29 appearances in all competitions.

That has led to speculation that he could leave Old Trafford as soon as this month with reports claiming that he has lots of interest from Serie A clubs.

One of those clubs is Italian giants Juventus and reports in Spain now claim that Man Utd are in ‘advanced talks’ over a deal to swap Zirkzee for Serbia international Vlahovic.

There is a ‘willingness to complete the deal’ from all sides with ‘a feeling that a move could be finalised in the coming weeks’ as Man Utd look to bring in the Juventus striker to bolster Amorim’s options in attack.

Despite Zirkzee’s struggles, he was one of the Man Utd heroes on Sunday in the FA Cup as the Red Devils beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties with the Netherlands international scoring the winning penalty.

Zirkzee climbed off the bench in the 81st minute to play his role in extra time and then penalties with Man Utd moving into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

And Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim highlighted how quickly things can change in football after he was booed off the pitch in a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle a couple of weeks ago.

Amorim told reporters: “Joshua a few weeks ago had a small problem with our fans and today he goes on the pitch, you feel the support from our fans and he has the last penalty.

“Life is like that and you have to continue humble, to work every day, and your time will come. It’s important not just for them but for their teammates.”

“Very exciting” United loanee helps side complete huge FA Cup giant-killing

Manchester United’s newest loanee Ethan Ennis made his debut for new side Doncaster Rovers against Hull City in the third round of the FA Cup yesterday.

The 20 year old came on after 84 minutes of action and played all of the extra-time period as his side held on for penalties.

He replaced Rob Street and filled in as a midfielder during the match.

The League Two side went ahead in the tie in the 51st minute but were pegged back by their Championship opponents in the 80th minute.

Ennis helped his side hold keep the home side at bay and perform an impressive giant-killing that the third round of the Cup is famous for.

In an enthralling game, Rovers were a penalty away from being knocked out but the shootout quickly turned on its head as Hull missed two in a row and Harry Clifton converted the all-important match-winning spot kick.

After the game Ennis posted on Instagram, “Enjoyable first few days at Doncaster Rovers. Fantastic feeling to make my debut and get through to the next round!”

The academy product will get the chance to prove himself against Premier League opposition in the next round when Doncaster will welcome Crystal Palace to the Eco-Power Stadium.

His new manager Grant McCann has lauded the potential impact Ennis will have at the club and claimed, “yeah, he’s a really good signing for us, we’ve had to fight off lots of competition from clubs higher up the pyramid than us, but Man United have trusted us with his development.”

“He’s a very exciting player, he can play anywhere across the frontline. I think the Doncaster fans can be really excited about Ethan.”

He is certainly ready to test himself at senior level as he has impressed for the under 21s this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 12 matches.

Ennis will next be in action when Rovers travel to Gillingham on Saturday lunchtime, where he will be looking to make his first professional start.

Arsenal v Man Utd has prompted large amounts of glee from all quarters; things are about to get ugly for Mikel Arteta.

          Balls again?
I am assuming from the quality of the passing in the match at The Emirates that the FA Cup ball is very different to the Premier League one…?
          Tyson Anderson

          Oh Mikel…
It’s about to get ugly for Arteta. Very very ugly…
Rob A (what has he done to our attack?) AFC

…Even Homer Simpson accepted that his dirty, slimy and ultimately airborne pig was beyond saving. Arteta must accept the requirement to add a proper goalscorer to this team after that performance.
Eoin (Man Utd have themselves a keeper) Ireland

          Bring it on, Stewie…
Kai Havertz misses a bunch of chances AND the decisive penalty? Stewie’s mail is going to be delicious isn’t it?
Luke, THFC, London (Tamworth are better than Liverpool, that’s the conclusion we have to draw isn’t it? Isn’t it…?!)

…Sincerely, I am so excited to read Stewie’s next mail.
Bodych (is Vinnie P, Diet Stewie?)

…I imagine that Havertz disasterclass was his Christmas. Happy Christmas Stewie.
          David, Ireland

          And here’s Stewie…
Any idea what the latest set of excuses are?

I was thinking perhaps the wildfires in LA really affected Arsenal’s delicate petals? Actually Amorim’s surname starts with the first letter of the alphabet, meaning poor Mikel cannot possibly be expected to compete with that? Oh and like Slot, he’s never managed in a top 5 league, and he’s inherited a world class squad of Galacticos. Just ask Bournemouth, Forest, Wolves or Spurs about that!

Or perhaps DEEP STATE PGMOL yet again, ruining an Arsenal fixture with a needless red? How on earth is any team supposed to compete when they’re down to 10? Don’t you realise going down to 10 men means you have to lose!

It was clear to Stevie Wonder this result was in the offing, hence why I wrote in and said Amorim has the chance to pull off the funniest thing ever. Obvious from the ManYoo performance at Anfield that the same tactics would clearly work against an expensively-assembled team of wastrels.

No point dissecting what is ultimately the same old shit. Arteta has to his credit, done a superb job replicating Wenger post-2005! We have an action replay of the same old bollocks:

          * A manager clearly out of his depth, making endless excuses about “lack of funds” to sign top attackers, even as his £120m “strike force” that trousers a collective £550k a week in wages, continues to regale the world with various comedy combinations of ineptitude, incompetence, injury and plain haplessness. The Tamworth number 9 can honestly not have done any worse. Please continue to remind yourself that with over £700m spent, Arsenal fans are jealous of the strikers at Leicester and Wolves. Another match where a defender is required to break the lock because, of course lol 🙄

          * The same old bottling, going out of every competition in the space of days, leaving the season completely dead in early January! A reminder that this Manager has spent over £700m.

          * Boring, soporific, sideways nonsense that’s ineffective

          * A deluded fanbase who continue to double down and adjust their ludicrous excuses.

Who remembers the days when Arsenal fans used to diss Mourinho Chelsea cos Arsenal “played the right way”? Apart from the fact Jose WON trophies, he had this guy in attack called Didier Drogba. And another bloke called Arjen Robben, and a Lampard guy who would chip in regularly with goals from midfield. Beats watching the rancid unicorn turd, a £65m ashtray (that Chelsea quickly disposed of, for a profit!) and a crocked beach bum better off twerking at the Curitiba Carnival.

The world can see Arteta is an overpaid jester. The fact this man is paid £15m a year, as some Arsenal fans replicate the “end of Wenger” days by actually, seriously attempting to deflect blame onto the Arsenal board, is brilliant! If I’m Stan Kroenke, Mikel Arteta – seeing the shocking state of that Arsenal attack and midfield – is not getting a single penny more to spend. On anything outside of what he knows aka Defenders and cloggers. He’s clueless about the attacking side of the game as I’ve said countless times!

If Kroenke gives Arteta one penny more to spend on attackers, it’ll be no better than Brexit Buffoon Ratcliffe giving ETH all that cash to saddle ManYoo with overpaid sewage it will take years to undo.

Havertz and Jesus should be the end of Arteta’s terroristic reign of attacking nonsense. One final thing, that someone else pointed out but was highly interesting: Arteta spent years working under Pep at Citeh. He knew all the staff, the squad and was close with first team and reserve team players. Arteta leveraged his relationships at Citeh to sign….Zinchenko, the clown that time forgot. And Jesus, we’ve been there. Both for huge fees.

What’s hilarious is that three other players were right there under Arteta’s nose, and not once did he even use his contacts to pursue a deal: Morgan Rogers went to Villa for just £8m! Liam Delap? I guess it’s “hard to compete” with Tractor money and Ed Sheeran Spotify streams. So fair enough. The final one is some chap called Cole Palmer. Again, Arteta watched this kid week in, week out at Citeh for years. And he came out of that with the conclusion that the best course of action would be to spend a combined £90m on a full back who cannot defend, and a “striker” who couldn’t finish a piss if you held his johnson for him.
Stewie Griffin (Replacing Dyche at Everton would have been the smart play for Arteta, although after 8 weeks of watching corner-ball, I’m guessing Everton fans woulda been begging to get Dyche back!)

READ: 16 Conclusions from Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd (3-5): Havertz and Gunners blow big chance, tentative United progress continues

          An ashtray > Havertz
Not an Arsenal fan so love Stewie’s posts but calling Havertz an ashtray is a disservice – an ashtray is solid, hard and does exactly what is it supposed to do.
Gaz, CFC, Sidcup (would you rather Cole Palmer and £20m+ or an ‘ashtray’? 🤔)

          Arsenal: Horrible to watch
At this particular stage of life, I’m not able to watch all that much football that doesn’t involve my team so am a bit baffled watching Arsenal today. The level of the ‘dark arts’ is pretty unprecedented from that particular club, imo.

This whole match, their strategy appears to (effectively) fake pain and suffering to get players booked, pass backwards until hoofing it to hopefully get a set-piece and then commit multiple fouls on each one of those, and hope to get away with it.

Again, it seems effective, but I thought Arteta was moving them in some great direction, all I see is expensive Stoke, but with much, much more diving.

Also, as a United fan, the amount of soft yellows and now reds we’re getting is an absolute joke. We need a Klopp or Fergie-esque rant. In all of the situations they’ve been borderline, but they’re all going against us these days.
Ryan, Bermuda (ref missing Gabriel injuring himself fouling Bruno from 5 yards away was pretty special)

          That referee, man…
Arsenal should be beating United anyway but to be given so much help from the referee is a joke. He was dying to send a United player off. Nothing Arsenal do is a free but every time the wind changes they get one.

If they’re going to need every handout I hope Forest beat them to the league the cheating scum.
          Anthony Fox

…So I just witnessed Dalot being sent off for a second yellow with a challenge much less dangerous than Bergveldt or whatever his name is.

Dalot slightly touched Martinelli while Berg cleaned the Greek Scouser out to the extent he required treatment and was subsequently off the pitch when Berg scored…..

But officials are doing fine… nothing to see here while El Presidente Webbez counts his millions ….

AFC just been given the dodgiest penalty you’ll ever see as well. What a dive from Havertz bravo.
Poor Scouse Tommy, Spion Kop Saffy

…This is the worst refereeing performance I’ve seen since United players smacked Arsenal players around in the league in 2004.

And this is why I know Arsenal will never win anything. Bunch of wimpy, whiny spineless players learning from their manager to make excuses and blame everything else.

          That’s all.
          A

…It’s been over 5 years not writing in, in fact, the last time I sent an email was when Wenger was still Arsenal manager.

I can’t believe that years later we still cry over a proper striker. Arteta knew we needed one over the summer and for the last 2 seasons but nothing was done.

I am watching this game and hope Man United wins it, even thought the referee seem to be favoring Arsenal.

We so poor, missed so many chances, Havertz is not good enough and no ways we going to win a trophy with him.
          Lwazi (South Africa)

          Come on Man Utd…
One of the rarest things I’ve experienced in football is cheering for Utd. This is one of those unicorn moments. Fair play, that was hilarious.
          Aidan, Lfc ; )

…As any self respecting Liverpool fan I have always had a unhealthy disdain for Man United so imagine my surprise as I genuinely sat watching the demise of Arsenal with such glee.

I actually let out a little yelp when Odegaard missed the pen.

I was wondering why ? I think it because I cannot stand Arteta, his time wasting tactics, his plan to turn Arsenal into an expensive Stoke City, his excuses!

I was embarrassed when Klopp moaned about the wind causing a problem in a Liverpool game but when I heard Arteta morning about the football I snapped. I get he’s deflecting from his team but that was just utter guff.

He’s an average manager. He’s spent £750m to get no where. The media love him. Just like City so many neutrals now want Arsenal to lose even if it is against the only team in England that can rival Liverpool.

Maybe Pep and Arteta can join Barcelona again and make them amazing. Oh. Wait. They don’t have any money.

Bye bye arsenal fans. Hope you had a nice time thinking you could be a “ big “ club.
          Ade – 20- is coming

          Proper football that
          3pm kick off.
          Terrible refereeing.
          Bit of a scrap.
A rendition of “you’re not singing anymore”.

How I’ve missed you old friend.
          Paul (Manchester)

          Badwolf, bad take
I can’t really understand what I am reading right now. These list of flops are absolutely insane. First of all, you think Jesus for 27m to Man City was a flop? The guy won 4 PL titles and scored 95 goals for them in 236 games. He had massive moments for them and was a very versatile player often playing on the right wing. He just seems like an easy target because he’s not prolific but the guy nearly scored 100 goals and wasn’t always a starter and wasn’t even expensive. So that’s wrong for sure.

You’re definitely being harsh on Balotelli too. The guy was there for like 2 seasons, had some very good moments. 30 goals for the club and also some important ones. He was inconsistent and obviously difficult to deal with but I’ve never heard anyone label him a flop. He was worth it for sure, he was a young player playing pretty much as a fourth back-up to Aguero, Dzeko and Tevez.

Ake was a success not even sure what you’re talking about here. Cancelo was at one point the best full back in the league if not the world. He didn’t last long but he was still a good player, so yes he was a success. You’re definitely taking the piss with Sterling too. The guy got 131 goals for City, won 4 titles and was runner up the VVD in the PFA POTY. He won the FWA POTY and was voted into the TOTY in 2019. He had 3 seasons where he got over 20 goals. He was pivotal in them winning the 2018 title with so many clutch last minute goals. You’re talking out of your arse lad. I didn’t even think any of these were debatable.

You threw in Rice and Havertz too, they’re not flops. They were both amongst our best players last season. They’ve both struggled lately but football fans are fickle. They’d rather focus on the last 4/5 weeks than the 18 months evidence prior to that. I wish people would write this sort of stuff in May last year when Rice and Havertz were performing brilliant. It’s easy to write it now when their form has dipped.

The Arteta spending nonsense is a myth. He’s spent more than other managers because we don’t sack our managers for fun like other teams. Ten Hag and Poch were spending more than him at United and Chelsea. Tottenham have spent pretty much the same as us since Arteta took over. I’m impressed with Liverpool. They consistently do well despite not spending loads.

Also, not sure if you’re a United fan or something but what on earth are you talking about saying the last 4 years has seen more hits than misses?!

          Malacia – Miss
          Antony – Miss
          Mount – Miss
          Onana – Miss mostly
          Casemiro – Miss
          Telles – Miss
          Van De Beek – Miss
          Sancho – Miss
Hojlund – Hasn’t been a success anyways but has time

De Ligt and Zirkzee have not impressed at all. I remember Gary Neville thinking in the summer that things would change at United and their recruitment was good. And he seemed to think that this was a shared opinion. United fans think the same shit every single summer. That this will be their year. They are literally the exact thing they used to mock in reference to Liverpool fans back in the day.
          Dion

          Stop putting off fascists!
I have been loyally patronizing your site since for what seems like an eternity (12 years) but the political shift over the past six years has really put a damper on the best football writing in the business. Whether it be Mediawatch or Nicholson, you can’t seem to escape the political editorializing which feels like a slap in the face to 50% of your customer base. Arseblog told half his audience they were fascists and should stop listening if they were right leaning.

I’m sincerely concerned this is sapping the immense joy this distraction (sport) provides – especially due to the over-commercialization that has occurred since the US/NBC TV rights deal.

Please consider refocusing you’re excellent work on to the beauty of the game itself and not the negativity that is sinking a lot of the world around us.

          Best regards,

Man Utd: Harry Maguire’s brutal three-word dig at Arsenal star Kai Havertz revealed amid FA Cup brawl

A report has revealed what Harry Maguire said to Kai Havertz after Arsenal were awarded a penalty during their FA Cup defeat against Manchester United.

The two Big Six sides clashed at the Emirates in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon. After a dull first half, the match came to life after the interval.

Man Utd punished Gabriel Magalhaes’ mistake as Alejandro Garnacho broke away and set up Bruno Fernandes, who clinically found the net with a superb finish.

Ruben Amorim‘s gameplan until Diogo Dalot was sent off after receiving his second booking with half an hour remaining.

Without Bukayo Saka, Arsenal have been pretty toothless in front of goal and they were frustrated by an organised Man Utd for most of the tie.

However, Dalot’s red card boosted the hosts as Gabriel levelled the tie moments later and Arsenal were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes remaining as Maguire was adjudged to have fouled Havertz.

This penalty was harsh on Man Utd, and this decision would have been overturned had VAR been used. Maguire was visibly fuming as he made a beeline for Havertz, while several other opposing players threw handbags in a throwback flashpoint.

To the delight of Maguire and Man Utd, Altay Bayindir – who produced a remarkable performance to save his side on multiple occasions – made a superb save to deny Martin Odegaard from the penalty spot.

United’s stars put their bodies on the line and showed immense character as they kept out Arsenal, who could not find a winner as the match went to penalties.

Bayindir solidified his Man of the Match status by saving Havertz’s effort, while each of United’s takers scored as Amorim’s side won 5-3 on penalties to advance.

Regarding the penalty incident, a report from The Mirror points out Maguire’s ‘three-word message to Havertz before the brawl’ between the two sides.

‘Harry Maguire took aim at Kai Havertz and said: “You cheating scumbag” after the Arsenal star landed his team a penalty.’

Speaking post-match, Amorim argued that his side “deserved to win” against Arsenal.

“Thankfully the players were there, they fought. Sometimes what we talk about before the match is not tactical or technical, it’s this. We have to compete no matter what, no matter what the situation we competed today,” Amorim said.

“We deserved to win, Arsenal didn’t deserve to lose but we deserved to win. The way we played, the way we fought was really tough since the beginning. We didn’t have the ball too much but we had control without the ball.

“I want to also say thank you to all the fans. It was unbelievable. I did not understand that all that area was our supporters, so it was a good day for us now we have to rest the players, I’m already thinking about the next game they’re really tired.”

Manchester United managed to pull another rabbit out of the hat as despite having to play over an hour with 10 men, they clinched their FA Cup third-round tie against Arsenal 5-3 via penalties away at the Emirates.

The game ended 1-1 at the end of extra-time with both teams scoring in the second half. After some brilliant work from Alejandro Garnacho, the ball fell to Bruno Fernandes on the edge of the box and he rifled past David Raya to hand the visitors the lead.

However, the joy was short-lived as Diogo Dalot saw his second yellow for a needless challenge and the Gunners equalised soon after.

At that point, it seemed like the Portuguese’s dismissal would cost the Red Devils the game as Kai Havertz won a dubious penalty but Altay Bayindir saved United’s blushes, pulling off one save after the other as the Red Devils took the game to penalties and eventually emerged triumphant.

Dalot almost cost United the game

The Portugal international struggled to affect the game on the left wing, both going forwards and while defending, forcing Ruben Amorim to shift him to his natural side.

But that move also did not pan out and the ex-Porto star will now miss the Premier League game against Southampton at the weekend.

Despite the impressive showing against Liverpool last week, Dalot has failed to shine as an attacking force this season, with the wingbacks expected to provide the width and attacking impetus in Amorim’s system.

The head coach has blamed this on the team’s imbalance which has forced him to keep playing his compatriot on the left due to Luke Shaw’s injury-enforced absence while Tyrell Malacia looks on his way out of the club.

Amorim would ideally like to play Dalot on the right and bring in reinforcements on the left but INEOS are grappling with PSR concerns and have so far failed to complete a single signing.

They are looking to raise capital through player sales and Dalot is one player who is attracting plenty of interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

In fact, the Spanish side were willing to pay £45 million for United’s No 20 but as per Givemesport, Amorim has no plans of letting his compatriot leave, despite his poor display on Sunday.

Real want Dalot but Amorim does not want to sell

“Diogo Dalot might have been viewed as a source of funds in the January window – until his display at Liverpool. The 25-year-old versatile defender, bought for a bargain £19 million from FC Porto in 2018, has proved himself one of United’s best buys in recent years.

“With United facing Profit and Sustainability concerns, Dalot is being tracked by teams in Spain and Italy, including Real Madrid.

“But the speedy wing-back, valued at £45 million, is a firm favourite with boss Ruben Amorim who has told United bosses he doesn’t want the star to be sold. Amorim sees Dalot as key to the tactical 3-4-3 system and one of the few players naturally suited to that style.”

Now whether this stance means no left wingback will be bought remains to be seen. Against Southampton next weekend, Amorim could be forced to play Malacia again and that does not bode well.

Alan Shearer purrs over “superb” United star who “held his nerve” and “didn’t blink first” in win over Arsenal

Legendary Premier League striker Alan Shearer has lauded the Manchester United trio of Altay Bayindir, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt for their respective performances in the FA Cup victory against Arsenal.

Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock moments after the break but Gabriel Magalhães equalised for the hosts after Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The Gunners blew the chance to go 2-1 up when Martin Ødegaard had a controversial penalty saved by Bayindir, who got the nod to start between the sticks ahead of Andre Onana.

Bayindir also made a string of excellent saves towards the end of regular time, to keep his side in the game.

Eventually, a penalty shootout was needed to settle the tie and Bayindir saved yet another penalty, this time denying Kai Havertz.

Joshua Zirkzee buried his winning kick into the corner to send United through to the fourth round of the competition, where they will face Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

There were other several standout performers, including Maguire and De Ligt, who were solid for the entire game.

Speaking on BBC after the final whistle, Shearer lauded Bayindir, De Ligt and Maguire.

The former Newcastle man said [via The Daily Mail], “He [Bayindir] holds his nerve, he doesn’t blink first.”

“It was a three-way tie between him and De Ligt and Maguire who I thought were also superb but just because of his penalty save, I thought I would give it to him [the man of the match award].”

“When you get given an opportunity, you have to take it and he took it today.”

On Dalot’s red card, Shearer pointed out, “Once he [Dalot] commits to go in for that challenge he’s got to win that ball. He knows what is going to happen if he doesn’t.”

“Even the slightest touch, he’s going over. You can’t really complain with that when you’re on a yellow card. If you’re going to make that challenge, you have to get up and you have to win that ball.”

Up next for Rubem Amorim and his players is a home meeting with Southampton on Thursday.

0 times dribbled past, 7 clearances, 100% ground duels won: United star is now the first name on Amorim’s teamsheet

Manchester United were expected to buckle under pressure when Arsenal equalised following Diogo Dalot’s sending-off. But instead, they dug deep to take the game to penalties and eventually clinched a 5-3 win away at the Emirates.

Sunday’s famous FA Cup win would not have been possible without the backline performing exceedingly well, as they had to hold off the Gunners for over an hour with a man down to take the game to penalties.

Matthijs de Ligt had to play out of his skin to keep the Gunners at bay, as the Dutchman made two stunning interventions in extra time worth talking about.

The first came as Declan Rice was lining up to shoot at Altay Bayindir‘s goal but the former Bayern Munich star slide in to make a crucial block.

De Ligt made a couple of stunning defensive interceptions

And the second was even more impressive as Kai Havertz’ pass seemed destined to be finished off by Leandro Trossard who was running in to meet the ball inches away from the goalline.

But De Ligt steamed in to clear away and the defender was pumped up with that defensive action. The Netherlands international made a total of seven clearances during the 120 minutes.

Matthijs de Ligt’s game by numbers vs. Arsenal:

                    100% ground duels won
                    80% pass accuracy
                    31 total touches
                    7 clearances
                    0 x dribbled past
                    0 fouls

The 25-year-old also made one interception and was not dribbled past even once during the game. That was not all as the former Ajax star won all his ground duels.

De Ligt was brave with the ball as well, having 31 touches while completing 16 of his 20 passes with one successful long-ball played (all stats via sofascore).

The summer signing has quietly become a key cog in Amorim’s machine since his difficult start to life in red with his recent sickness coinciding with the team going on a three-match losing run.

De Ligt has become a mainstay at the heart of United’s defence

Since his return, the Red Devils have produced a far more defensively-astute display, last weekend away against Liverpool and now Arsenal.

From his signing being criticised as yet another ex-Ajax star to now being almost a permanent fixture in the starting line-up, De Ligt has certainly answered his critics.

He started on the right-side of the back three but ended in the middle as Harry Maguire was forced off with injury. Amorim will need the Dutchman even more, especially if the England international is sidelined due to injury.

The incredible win set-up a reunion with Ruud van Nistelrooy and his Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round with the former United interim boss keen to send a message to both INEOS and Amorim for parting ways with him.

“Everyone was pointing the finger”: Amorim sends message to struggling duo after remarkable turnaround in win vs. Arsenal

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has praised Altay Bayindir and Joshua Zirkzee for their resilience and determination, following the club’s FA Cup third-round win over Arsenal.

United battled hard for an hour with 10 men after Diogo Dalot’s red card to take the clash to penalties and eventually overcome their hosts.

Bayindir saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty in normal time and also denied Kai Havertz from the spot kick in the ensuing penalty shootout. Additionally, the Turkish goalkeeper came up with several other crucial stops that kept United in the game.

It was Zirkzee who stepped up to convert the winning penalty in United’s 5-3 shootout triumph at the Emirates.

It was a massive turnaround for the two players, who have had very difficult spells at United for different reasons. Bayindir has struggled to get regular playing time and has had to be content with playing the role of Andre Onana’s understudy.

Last month, Bayindir was at fault for at least two of the four goals conceded as the Red Devils were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Zirkzee was booed off the pitch by his own fans after being substituted in the 33rd minute of the 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle.

Speaking in his post-match press conference after beating Arsenal, Amorim told reporters about the two players, “It’s really important not just for them but for all the players. Your life as a footballer has cycles and moments and sometimes in one week your life can change.”

“You can see with Altay. Against Tottenham, everyone was pointing the finger for Altay and I understand that, today he was our hero.”

“[The penalty save] was really important because it gave us more strength and with less one player it’s really hard to press. A team like Arsenal with 11 players – imagine with ten players. And if you are in disadvantage it’s really hard, because they can control the ball, they were already controlling the ball in a lot of moments so it was vital to draw the game.”

“Joshua a couple of weeks ago, he had a small problem with our fans and today every time he goes on the pitch you feel the support from the fans and then he has the last penalty. Life is like that. You have to continue, be humble, work every day. It’s not just important for them but for their teammates.”

On United’s performance, Amorim relayed, “Especially in the first half we played better than in the first game. We were better in set-pieces today, more aggressive, we showed spirit, even with 10 men.”

“The sending-off was really hard on us. There were some opportunities from Arsenal. The players were really tired. But I felt since the first minute today was our day. And I felt a connection with our fans.”

The Portuguese coach added, “When we score first it helps us to suffer. It’s more strength to suffer.”

“We can calm down the game. We are understanding more the way we play – sometimes not playing well but you can control the game in certain moments. It’s clear we’re improving with the way we suffer. It’s a good thing for a team.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Southampton at Old Trafford.
