“We want to celebrate and everything but…”: Fernandes fires crucial warning to his teammates despite big win vs. Arsenal

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a message to his teammates, calling for more consistent performances, following their FA Cup third-round victory over Arsenal.

United booked their spot in the next stage of the competition in dramatic style. Fernandes opened the scoring seven minutes after the break as he thumped in an easy ball from Alejandro Garnacho.

Momentum then turned after Diogo Dalot was sent off for two bookable offences, with Gabriel Magalhaes equalising for the hosts moments after. Martin Odegaard’s controversial penalty was then saved by Altay Bayindir, who played a key role in the resultant shootout.

Bayindir also denied Kai Havertz from the spot-kick before Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty to send United through to the fourth round.

It was another brilliant performance from Fernandes, who led the team by example.

After the final whistle, the Portugal international spoke to BBC One and said, “Obviously the circumstances of the game we played with one less we suffered a lot but we sacrificed a lot as a team and at the end you get this.”

On Altay Bayindir’s display, Fernandes remarked, “It’s a big moment for him, the first penalty and another save here and we are really happy for him.”

“It’s tough to be second goalkeeper, he came here to play, whenever he gets his chance he’s top class for us, he’s top class in training, he’s always available for everyone and he truly deserves this moment.”

Fernandes emphasised that going forward, United must be more consistent.

“I know we want to celebrate and everything but our focus is now Southampton, that is when we have to back it up. The big games against Liverpool, Arsenal, everyone steps up because it’s a big game.”

“You want to be in these kinds of games, you want to be involved, you want to be the best but we have to do it in Old Trafford with these fans again.”

“We have to give it back for the club. We need to do it every week, every game.”

United vs. Southampton will take place on Thursday. Kick-off is at 20:00 GMT.

“Now he’s like a hero for us”: Amorim waxes lyrical about United star after his brilliant display in FA Cup win vs. Arsenal

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has lauded Altay Bayindir for his contributions to the team’s incredible FA Cup triumph over Arsenal at the Emirates.

Joshua Zirkzee netted the winning spot-kick after Bayindir had earlier denied Kai Havertz from 12 yards.

Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead in the second half with an emphatic finish, which capped off a clinical counter-attack. However, soon after the hour mark, United’s advantage was thrust into jeopardy after Diogo Dalot was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Arsenal immediately capitalised as Gabriel Magalhaes found the back of the net. Both sides created chances but couldn’t score, necessitating a penalty shootout.

United ultimately prevailed, booking their spot in the fourth round, where they will come up against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

In addition to saving Havertz’s penalty kick, Bayindir also denied Martin Odegaard from the spot-kick in the second half.

Additionally, the Turkey international produced a string of excellent saves that kept the result level. His heroics weren’t lost on Amorim, who waxed lyrical about him after the final whistle.

Amorim told BBC One about Bayindir, “He’s a good guy, he works a lot and life has beautiful things. A few weeks ago we were suffering through a difficult moment but now he’s like a hero for us.”

“All the players in this team who have the opportunity and they are lucky because they are playing for Manchester United.”

“It doesn’t matter if you play one game or 90 games, its always a joy to play for this club.”

On facing Leicester next in the FA Cup, Amorim stated, “I talked with him [Van Nistelrooy] before I came.”

“I’m looking forward to speak with him. He’s a class guy but we need to win. Maybe we’ll be divided because he loves this club but we need to win.”

Meanwhile, United return to Premier League action on Thursday when they host bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Thursday. The match kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

United set-up magical reunion at Old Trafford with Amorim set to face Van Nistelrooy next in the FA Cup

Manchester United secured progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a fantastic 5-3 win on penalties against Arsenal away at the Emirates on Sunday.

The win was even more special as the visitors had to do it while having to play with 10 men for over an hour after Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow in the second half.

The win means the Red Devils have set-up a date with former interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy who will bring his Leicester City team to Old Trafford in about a month’s time, on February 8.

United were first out of the hat in the draw, which was held immediately after United secured progress, and they will face a team they have already beaten twice this season.

        Date with Ruud

But those wins came when the former Dutch striker was at the helm, with the Old Trafford side winning their Carabao Cup fourth round tie 5-2, while thrashing the Foxes 3-0 in the Premier League.

Steve Cooper subsequently lost his job and so did Van Nistelrooy, who wanted to stay and work under Ruben Amorim, but the Portuguese had other ideas.

        — Manchester United (@ManUtd) January 12, 2025

The ex-Netherlands striker, who had returned to Manchester as part of former manager Erik ten Hag’s staff last summer, was not too pleased with the decision to part ways and he will be looking to send a message to both INEOS and Amorim.

Ruud will be looking to make a statement

Van Nistelrooy has not had an easy time at Leicester, winning only one league game since his arrival with the Foxes in 19th and looking favourites alongwith Southampton for the drop.

But he will definitely be up for the challenge as will his Foxes be. United will need to match that intensity when they come to town.

Just like they did against the Gunners as the 10-men of United held firm under pressure with two unlikely heroes in Altay Bayindir and Alejandro Garnacho producing the goods.

Under Amorim, the 13-time FA Cup winners have shown their big-game temperament but now need to produce in the other games like the tie against Leicester if they are salvage the season.

The FA Cup does signify their best shot at success this campaign.

Arsenal need better than Trossard, Havertz and Sterling to break extremely meh goalscoring form

Arsenal need better than Trossard, Havertz and Sterling to break extremely meh goalscoring form

We knew that Arsenal were highly dependent on Bukayo Saka, and they had no shortage of stodgy performances even before his injury. But bloody hell, we still weren’t quite prepared for just how utterly toothless they would look so much of the time in his absence.

Mikel Arteta’s side are very solid and can control games at will when they’re not losing their heads over whatever perceived injustice has gone against them this week, but their struggles against the ten men of Manchester United in the FA Cup third round underlined just how unconvincing Arsenal are in the final third.

Even against ten men, Arsenal’s chances of scoring still felt distinctly limited to set pieces and nothing else. Even against Altay Bayindir, Declan Rice seemingly trying to shoot directly from corners does not inspire confidence in a side’s creative prowess.

Having a penalty saved feels very Arsenal, even if it was an excellent save. Kicking off about a correctly-given offside is very Arsenal. A front three for much of the game of Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling is so Arsenal it almost hurts, and delivered exactly the kind of end product you might expect.

READ: Mikel Arteta negativity, Bukayo Saka injury and set-pieces: What is going wrong at Arsenal?

It’s only fair and right to note that just like against Liverpool, Manchester United were by and large defensively excellent, certainly considering their numerical disadvantage. Harry Maguire did not get nearly enough credit for his showing at Anfield last weekend, but he and Matthijs de Ligt were given their dues here.

After their awful run of form, the work Ruben Amorim is doing on the training ground is starting to show on matchdays, at least when it comes to fixing that defence.

Now both managers need to prove their chops at the other end of the pitch – but the reality is that for Arteta, as with Amorim, there is only so much he can do without the addition of more quality for the front line.

Coaches can provide a framework for the defence to work with, and there will be principles and positions they want their side to abide by in possession, but any manager at any level will tell you that they ideally want to give their attacking players as much freedom as possible to do their thing once they get into the final third. The problem both sides have is that Their Thing is simply not very good.

For Arsenal, that represents an obvious decline. This Arsenal is a far cry from their free-scoring form last season, despite the personnel being much the same, and it is hard to put a definitive finger on why that should be the case. Injuries haven’t helped, but also don’t explain why Leandro Trossard is unable to hit a shot any lower than 35 yards in the air, or why Martin Odegaard continues to run the show yet has as many Premier League assists this season as Adam Lallana.

The fact that Arsenal thought Sterling might be a solution to their problems in the summer suggests it is an issue they are very well aware of and were (belatedly) desperate to fix; short of complacency or a failure to have watched any of Sterling’s spell at Chelsea, there’s no way that deadline day move would have been sanctioned otherwise. We doubt there were any forlorn Gunners who were cheered up by the prospect of Sterling’s impending return as Saka’s most natural replacement.

We’re not “throw money at the problem” people, as a rule, but it’s hard to see a better way out of it for Arsenal at the moment. They have already been knocked out of one cup and are teetering in another because of that issue; it looks extremely likely to be another season without silverware unless they can pull something bloody spectacular out of their bag this month.

“You have to be ready always”: United’s hero reflects on penalty masterclass which saw off Arsenal

Manchester United have a new cult hero in Altay Bayindir, whose penalty-saving antics in normal time and during the penalty shootout carried the Red Devils past Arsenal and into the next round of the FA Cup.

The Turkish international has had to be patient for first-team chances, operating very firmly as backup to Andre Onana, but his performance at the Emirates Stadium will be remembered for a very long time.

Despite being rightly criticised for his wayward distribution, Bayindir single-handedly kept United in the tie when he saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty with 20 minutes to go and the game on a knife edge at 1-1.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, the 26-year-old was self-effacing. He said: “I just help my team. I am working every day, I am patient, I just want to help this great team.

“I want to make everyone happy for this great club. I’m working here every day.”

Bayindir made six saves, including from Odegaard’s penalty, to keep the Arsenal attackers at bay and keep his side in with a shout as they dug in to make it to a shootout.

And when the chips were down in the penalty shootout Bayindir was once again the hero, diving low to his left to deny the hapless Kai Havertz.

It was quite a way to mark only his fifth appearance for the first team, after joining from Fenerbahce back in September 2023.

He said: “If you are not playing it doesn’t matter. You have to be ready every minute, every second, if you are a Man United player you have to be ready always.”

He was also full of praise for manager Ruben Amorim, for whom character and application is absolutely key.

“He is talking with us every day and he wants to help us. We love him and he’s always trying to do his best.

“He has a very good relationship with the players and we are trusting him, he is trusting us. We are fighting together.”

Under-fire duo come up trumps vs Arsenal as Amorim’s United show heart under pressure again

In the space of a week, Manchester United once again produced the goods in another huge game, as they began their defence of the FA Cup with a 5-3 win on penalties against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

The victory was made even more special as the visitors went down to 10 men in the 61st minute, when Diogo Dalot saw his second yellow, but still went on to take the game to extra-time and subsequently penalties.

Ruben Amorim will be delighted with the heart and intensity shown by his team against the odds once again. Not many had given the 20-time English league champions a chance given their difficulties in the Premier League.

But they rose to the occasion in North London, especially a few who have faced severe criticism in recent weeks and have been linked with an exit as a result.

              Bayindir produces a stunner

The head coach decided to take a bold call when he announced during his pre-match press conference that Altay Bayindir would start in goal ahead of Andre Onana.

The Turk was at fault for two of Tottenham Hotspur’s goals in United’s Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat a few weeks ago and he is reportedly unhappy with his lack of minutes at Old Trafford.

He began in nervous fashion, with his passing going awry most of the times, and when his weak punch out led to the Gunners scoring their equaliser, it almost felt like the former Fenerbahce star would buckle under pressure.

But he rose to the occasion, saving Martin Odegaard’s penalty, which the hosts won courtesy of a a blatant dive from Kai Havertz which the referee did not spot.

The Turkiye international made quite a few stunning saves to keep the score level till the end of extra-time before saving again from Havertz in the penalty shootout.

This result will hopefully do a lot for his confidence, and maybe more chances in the cup will come his way now that the club have secured progress into the fourth round of the competition.

Another player who has been under pressure since Amorim’s arrival has been Alejandro Garnacho. The coach had even dropped him from the matchday squad ahead of the Manchester derby.

              Garnacho with another assist

His attitude off and on the pitch was questioned and he has had to make do with substitute appearances. He got a rare start on Sunday and just like he did against Liverpool last week, he once again reminded everyone of what he can produce.

He grabbed his second assist in as many games with a great run after the hosts made a defensive mistake and he expertly found a marauding Bruno Fernandes who smashed into the back of the net to hand the Red Devils the lead.

The Argentine was not afraid to do the dirty work as he responded to the head coach’s demand of wanting more off the ball from him.

The intensity the players showed since going a man down was once again proof that Amorim is slowly turning the tide at the club. Now it is only a matter of consistency and whether the players can keep this up.

100% tackles won, 6 ball recoveries, 7 final third passes: United star led by example in FA Cup win vs. Arsenal

Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty for 10-man Manchester United against Arsenal after their pulsating FA Cup third-round tie finished 1-1 after extra time at the Emirates Stadium.

Bruno Fernandes put United in the lead seven minutes after the break, smashing in a good pass from Alejandro Garnacho. Soon after, United went a man down as Diogo Dalot was sent off after committing a second bookable offence. Gabriel Magalhaes restored parity just two minutes later.

Both teams had chances but couldn’t find the back of the net, necessitating a penalty shootout.

Altay Bayindir denied Kai Havertz, having also saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty kick during the second half. United are now through to the fourth round, where they will come up against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

United had just 29% possession to Arsenal’s 71% share of the ball.

Ruben Amorim’s men managed four shots on target from their total seven cracks at goal. The hosts, on the other hand, fired 26 shots, with seven of them requiring Bayindir to intervene.

United put together 291 passes with a pass accuracy of 69%. The Gunners strung 656 passes with a completion rate of 87%.

                (Stats obtained from Sofascore)

One of United’s best performers was Fernandes.

Beyond his goal, the Skipper touched the ball 50 times and won 100% of the tackles he delved into.

He launched 12 long passes and delivered an impressive seven passes into the final third. Fernandes made six ball recoveries.

The midfielder attempted five take-ons, completing four of them.

                He also made two clearances.

Bruno Fernandes’ game by numbers vs. Arsenal:

                100% tackles won
                50 total touches
                12 long passses
7 passes into the final third
                6 ball recoveries
                5 attempted take-ons
                4 successful take-ons
                2 crosses

11 clearances, 5 blocked shots, 100% aerial duels: United colossus put in huge defensive display vs Arsenal

Manchester United did it the hard way against Arsenal, but progressed to the next round of the FA Cup with a thrilling penalty shootout triumph in London.

The match burst into life after a cagey first half when Bruno Fernandes thundered home the opening goal on 52 minutes, but it was cancelled out by Gabriel Magalhaes who levelled for the hosts not long after Diogo Dalot was sent off just minutes later.

The score stayed locked at 1-1 all the way through to the end of extra time, but United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir made himself a hero in normal time with a penalty save from Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard.

The penalty was given away by Harry Maguire, who was harshly penalised for a challenge on Kai Havertz, but it was one of the only blots on his copybook in an otherwise imperious defensive display.

The Englishman made a colossal 11 clearances, the most of anyone on the pitch, and blocked an enormous five shots – nobody else blocked more than one.

Maguire also made two tackles and one interception to reach a total of 19 defensive actions as United repelled wave after wave of Arsenal pressure. Teammates Noussair Mazraoui managed 16 and Matthijs de Ligt 10 in a cohesive performance from United’s backline.

The 31-year-old racked up these impressive stats despite being substituted during extra time, 16 minutes before the end.

He was immense in the air, and won all four of his aerial duels as Mikel Arteta’s side pumped the United box full of crosses.

He was also successful on the floor, winning three of four ground duels contested, and beat his man once with a successful dribble.

After Diogo Dalot was sent off on the hour mark, the game settled even more into an attack versus defence dynamic, so United did not do too much with the ball.

But Maguire played a big part when his side were in possession, attempting 30 passes and completing 22 for an overall passing success rate of 73%.

Only his fellow centre-back Lisandro Martinez made more successful passes.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take Leicester City to Old Trafford to face his former club Manchester United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The former United striker, coach and interim boss departed the club upon Ruben Amorim’s arrival and subsequently took over from Steve Cooper at Leicester. Holders United overcame Arsenal on penalties at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

There are all-Premier League ties elsewhere as Brighton and Hove Albion will host Chelsea, Bournemouth travel to Everton, and Aston Villa take on Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool will meanwhile make the long trip to Plymouth Argyle, who knocked out top-flight Brentford in the third round, and Manchester City will take on either Leyton Orient or Derby County, who will face off on Tuesday evening.

Non-league Dagenham & Redbridge would get a visit to Leeds United as their rewards if they are able to pull off a shock against Championship side Millwall on Monday night, and League Two promotion hopefuls will welcome Premier League opposition after drawing Crystal Palace.

Four things we learnt as United hold their nerve to knock Arsenal out of FA Cup on penalties

Manchester United travelled to London today aiming to upset the odds and knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup.

Altay Bayindir got a rare start in goal and a chance to redeem himself after a poor showing versus Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao cup defeat in December.

Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt formed the back three as Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot filled in once again in the wingback positions.

Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo started again as the midfield duo and there was a return to the team for Alejandro Garnacho, despite numerous rumours linking the Argentine with a move away from the club.

Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund completed the attack as they usually do as Amad Diallo was dropped to the bench having had a slight knock during the week.

Here are four things we learnt from the match.

United continue tight first halves away against top sides

As the first half ended 0-0, United’s first 45 minutes were almost a carbon copy of the game at the Emirates in December.

The Red Devils had more possession last month, as they were happy to be solid in defence in this match but in both games, there were few Arsenal chances in the opening half. In fact, the Gunners failed to have a shot on target.

United also kept a clean sheet in the first 45 minutes at Anfield last week and only conceded one away to Tottenham and Manchester City.

As a result, they have only conceded two goals in five first halves away to top teams in the land, which highlights the growing understanding of Amorim’s system and the departure from the chaos ball of Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

The Red Devils need to carry more attacking threat

While United impressed in defensive organisation in the first half, they struggled to carry much threat with the ball.

United did actually have more shots on target than the hosts in the opening 45 minutes but in reality, rarely threatened in an offensive way.

It has been a recurrent theme for quite a while at the club, long before Amorim’s arrival, as United have struggled to counter attack.

One of the club’s most famous traditions is their historic ability to hit teams on the break and score lightning quick goals but this rarely seems to be a feature of the club’s attacking play these days.

While Amorim does want to have more possession and slow build up play, in games like this it is essential that United’s solid defensive shape is balanced with menacing pace and threat on the counter.

The Red Devils proved they certainly have the talent to do so, when they smashed in an opener from Bruno Fernandes after great work on the counter by Garnacho. This needs to happen more frequently if Amorim’s side are truly to be a threat away from home in the big games.

United have a problem with discipline

Not only was Fernandes cautioned for needless dissent in the first half, Diogo Dalot received two yellow cards in less than 20 minutes to reduce United to 10 men.

To add insult to injury, Arsenal equalised just moments later to compound the away side’s misery.

United also went down to ten men against Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day.

Ruben Amorim is clearly building a foundation of solidity but this will count for nothing unless he can get his players to keep their cool when the pressure is really on.

Altay Bayindir’s big moments finally arrived

Bayindir’s first big moments as a United player arrived as he made a string of fine saves in the second half to take the tie to extra time.

He made a great penalty stop from Martin Odegaard and a fine save to tip over a Declan Rice header.

The Turk also kept his side in the game when he impressively got down low to keep out another late effort from Rice.

Bayindir’s biggest moment would come in the penalty shootout when he saved Kai Havertz’s effort as United came out on top 5-4.

Whilst the former Fenerbahce man is unlikely to threaten Andre Onana’s spot as number one, this was the first match where he had a real impact in a positive sense and he will hope this can give him the confidence to kickstart his United career.
