Rashford transfer derailed by Man City bombshell as Serie A rule prevents double swoop

Marcus Rashford’s proposed move away from Manchester United has been derailed by Kyle Walker announcing his desire to leave Manchester City thanks to a Serie A rule that prevents AC Milan signing both of them.

Rashford wants out of Old Trafford having announced his desire for a “new challenge” last month, but options are thin on the ground thanks to his £300,000 per week wages and his lack of interest in a move to Saudi Arabia or Turkey.

Talks have reportedly been held with Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, while West Ham have been asked to be kept informed and Arsenal made a ‘phone call’ to the Red Devils.

But reports have suggested it’s AC Milan who are most advanced in their bid to sign Rashford, whose brother and agent is said to have flown to Italy for talks this week.

Milan sporting advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a former teammate for Rashford’s at Old Trafford – denied this was the case, but is a big fan of the England international.

“I know Rashford very well, I played with him when he was young, now he’s a grown-up and has done great things with Manchester United,” Ibrahimovic said.

“I don’t think I need to convince him, because Milan are one of the biggest clubs in the world and everyone wants to come here.

“As of today, it is not an easy operation, but we have not spoken to him yet. We’ll see if we will speak to him.”

But his move to the Serie A side has been cast into doubt thanks to Guardiola’s bombshell announcement on Saturday that Kyle Walker has asked to leave the club this month.

“Two days ago Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad,” said Guardiola.

“We cannot understand [what] the club did these years without Kyle. It’s impossible. He’s been our right-back, giving us something we didn’t have. But now in his mind, for many reasons, he would like to explore if he can go to another country to play his last years.”

The Telegraph claim it’s again AC Milan who are leading the race for Walker’s signature; they’re said to be ‘confident’ of securing his transfer despite there being no formal contact between the two clubs as yet.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on Sunday that there’s also predictable interest from Saudi Arabia.

He wrote on X: ‘Kyle Walker will hear AC Milan proposal as there’s also interest from Saudi Pro League clubs since last summer.

‘Milan are keen on discussing with Walker with hope not to spend any money in transfer fee, if Man City let him leave for free now.’

Only one of Rashford or Walker can be signed by Milan though as the Serie A side only have one spot for non-EU players available in their squad.

It’s all quite complicated thanks to some rule flip-flopping in recent years, the crux of the matter being that each Serie A club can have two non-EU players registered at any one time and Rashford or Walker would be Milan’s second after Nigerian Samuel Chukwueze.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and others who break this non-EU rule slipped through the net in a grace period ahead of the 2024/2025 season.

Confirmed United XI vs Arsenal: Bayindir, Mainoo, Garnacho start, Rashford again not in squad

Altay Bayindir starts in goal for Manchester United today as they start their defence of the FA Cup with a difficult away tie against Arsenal.

It will be his second FA Cup appearance for the Red Devils, having made his debut against Newport County last season under Erik ten Hag.

The back three are Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Luke Shaw are all out injured.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are the wing backs as usual, with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield.

Up front, Rasmus Hojlund leads the line, supported by Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.

Amad is left out of the starting XI, having been struggling with a knock during the week, but is fit enough to be on the bench.

There are therefore just two changes from the side that performed so well against Liverpool in their previous fixture.

Mason Mount is still injured and Marcus Rashford has once again been omitted from the squad.

On the substitutes bench with Amad are Andre Onana, Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Josh Zirkzee, Antony and Toby Collyer.

Kick-off at the Emirates is at 3pm GMT. If the match is all square after 90 minutes, extra time and penalties will take place.

Amorim wants United star to stay and accept the “duties that Rashford didn’t” – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has not been afraid to take huge calls since coming on board, including dropping both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the Manchester derby matchday squad.

And since that decision, the Mancunian is still to find a way back into the first team while the Argentine has had to be satisfied with appearances off the bench.

The Portuguese has questioned the 20-year-old’s work ethic both on and off the pitch while his lifestyle choices have also come under the scanner recently.

Following his squad demotion, there has been talk of INEOS being open to moving him on despite his recent contract extension as the club grapples to deal with the deteriorating PSR situation.

        Garnacho has struggled under Amorim

There has been tentative interest from former club Atletico Madrid and even Paris Saint-Germain, but United’s asking price has meant not too many concrete approaches are expected mid-season.

Garnacho now has no option but to try and regain the coach’s trust in order to win back his place in the first XI. And the only way to do that is to work even harder.

The Argentina international seems to be paying heed to the advice, and as relayed by The Peoples Person, he deleted his X/Twitter account before the Liverpool game last weekend and grabbed the assist for Amad Diallo’s equaliser.

And as per Givemesport, Amorim now wants to see more consistency from the winger, especially off the ball, something Rashford had failed to provide.

The head coach believes the Argentine wonderkid has the potential to make the left wing spot his own if the Mancunian departs in January.

Amorim wants more consistency from Garnacho

“But once Rashford’s gone – with AC Milan, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund all circling – Amorim wants Garnacho to grow into the left-sided attacking role – as long as he accepts the defending duties that Rashford didn’t buy into.

“Garnacho’s attacking threat and assist for Amad Diallo’s winner at Liverpool underlined his value to the team. But Amorim wants Garnacho to make himself ‘undroppable’ with more consistency a target for the youngster.”

Garnacho did not have the easiest of times when Erik ten Hag had arrived as well but he had fought his way into the Dutchman’s thinking and cemented his place in the team with his consistent and brave showings.

Now it is up to him again to prove his critics wrong and show everyone that he deserves to stay at Old Trafford.

“Not a topic”: Ligue 1 giants have ruled themselves out of the transfer race for United superstar – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim needs reinforcements desperately if he is to help the club out of their current predicament.

However, following a massive summer splurge and the compensation paid to former boss Erik ten Hag and Sporting Lisbon to acquire their manager, the Red Devils have very little wriggle room regarding their PSR situation.

Hence, INEOS are mulling over player sales to raise money with even academy graduates not off limits as their sales count towards pure profit.

Both Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho’s names have been linked with sensational exits but the Carrington product most likely to make way this January is Marcus Rashford.

Rashford’s future up in the air

The Mancunian has already come out and declared his intention to leave his boyhood club and the forward is yet to make a first-team appearance since the Manchester derby last month.

He is unlikely to be involved for Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Arsenal as well with Barcelona and AC Milan among the leading contenders at this stage.

Surprisingly, AS Monaco were also linked with the Englishman after the Ligue 1 side saw Folarin Balogun suffer a severe injury which will keep him sidelined until April.

However, Get French Football News have now claimed that the French team are closing in on the signing of former Arsenal forward Mika Biereth from Sturm Graz, and that means they have neither the room nor the finances to go after Rashford.

          Monaco ruled out

“However, whilst Monaco are looking to bring in reinforcements in this sector of the pitch, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford (27) is not being considered, Get French Football News understands.

“The Telegraph reported an interest from the Principality club on Friday. The England international is out of favour at his formative club and is looking for a new club. He has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A.

“However, with former Arsenal forward Mika Biereth set to arrive from Sturm Graz in a deal that could rise to €15m, Rashford’s arrival is not a topic in Monaco.”

AC Milan seem to be in pole position at the moment and the saga is turning into a distraction at this stage and the sooner the club move on the England international the better.

Romano reveals Man Utd trio to blame for Mainoo contract delay amid Chelsea links

Romano reveals Man Utd trio to blame for Mainoo contract delay amid Chelsea links

Fabrizio Romano has revealed who’s to blame at Manchester United for the delay in agreeing a new deal with Kobbie Mainoo amid links with Chelsea.

Mainoo was previously heralded as one of United’s ‘untouchable’ stars along with Alejandro Garnacho, but the club’s dire finances now mean every player has a price.

Chelsea have leapt to the front of the queue to sign Mainoo, who is said to be ‘unhappy’ with the initial terms offered by INEOS in negotiations over a new contract.

Mainoo currently earns just £20,000 per week, a drop in the ocean compared to Casemiro’s £350,000 per week wedge, and reportedly wants a salary of around £200,000 that reflects his importance to the team.

It’s claimed United would listen to offers of £100m for Mainoo but want to keep him at the club, and Romano claims that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival at the club, as well as Dan Ashworth’s brief tenure as sporting director, has led to delays in negotiations over an extension.

“They want to insist on contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo,” said Romano on his YouTube channel. “So after extending the contract of Amad Diallo to 2030, Man Utd will try to push also with Kobbie Mainoo.

“Amorim in his press conference said ‘we want to keep our best players, we want to keep our academy players, I’m very happy with Kobbie and how he’s developing.’

“But now for Man Utd it’s going to be time to try and reach an agreement with the player.”

“Remember that there were changes in the Manchester United board” continued Romano. “New owners, then new directors, then Dan Ashworth leaves and now Jason Wilcox [taking the lead].

“So many changes and it means that sometimes you have to restart on some points in the conversations. But Man Utd are working on the new contract of Kobbie Mainoo.”

United boss Ruben Amorim was asked about the futures of Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho ahead of Man Utd’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday and insisted he wants to keep the promising pair at the club.

He said: “I really love my players. I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones,” he said.

“It’s a special moment in this club, it’s a hard moment, but, of course, I’m really happy with Kobbie, he’s improving, and also with Garna. Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that we build for this club.

Man Utd transfer: Amorim breaks Sporting promise in £33.5m January push for Dortmund target

Manchester United are pushing to sign Goncalo Inacio from Sporting in January despite Ruben Amorim insisting he wouldn’t target his former players in the winter window.

Amorim is desperate to bolster his squad in January as he looks to revert their slide down the Premier League table, but is hampered by their need to stay within the bounds of PSR regulations.

Reports suggest United will need to buy in order to sell, which explains why Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are no longer ‘untouchable’ as two of few saleable assets in the squad.

Mainoo is drawing interest from Chelsea while Garnacho has been ‘mentioned’ in talks with PSG over a swap deal for Nuno Mendes, and is also thought to be Antonio Conte’s top target to replace seemingly PSG-bound Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

As well as left-back Mendes, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Amorim is also keen on reuniting with Inacio, but that would mean the head coach having to welch on a promise he made to Sporting when he left for United in November.

Amorim said: “I will not sign any Sporting player at Man United in January… then, what happens in the summer I don’t know.

“Sporting players are good players. We will see what happens…”

The report claims that United may offer to take Inacio on loan with the option of a €40million (£33.5million) permanent deal in the summer.

It’s stated that agent Miguel Pinho – who can name Amorim, Bruno Fernandes and United target Nuno Mendes on their books – was in England to speak to United this week.

Pinho may have been discussing any number of his clients but A Bola believe that United are prepared to formulate a deal for Inacio, with Borussia Dortmund providing competition for his transfer.

Jonny Evans has been linked with Rangers ahead of his contract expiring this summer, while Victor Lindelof also looks set to leave the club, with Leicester among his suitors.

Another left-footed centre back as competition for Lisandro Martinez may then become the priority with Inacio fitting the bill to bolster the back line.

Amorim was asked about the futures of Mainoo and Garnacho ahead of Man Utd’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday and insisted he wants to keep the promising pair at the club.

He said: “I really love my players. I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones,” he said.

Napoli launch sensational raid for United forward to replace Kvaratskhelia, but it’s not Rashford – report

Napoli manager Antonio Conte has implored his club to target Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho as a replacement for wantaway star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, according to a report from Italy.

Michele Criscitiello (Sport Italia) reveals the 20-year-old Argentinian has been identified by Conte as the “only name” he wants to replace Kvaratskhelia, who looks set to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the winter window.

PSG are believed to be offering the Georgian winger a wage packet worth four times his current salary in Naples and he has communicated his wish to swap Serie A for Ligue 1 to Napoli officials.

Reports had suggested United were interested in Kvaratskhelia, using Marcus Rashford as a potential makeweight in a deal with the 27-year-old forward attracting attention from Italy’s top clubs.

However, it seems Kvaratskhelia has his eyes set firmly on Paris with the Red Devils lacking the financial flexibility to rival any bid for the flying winger in January.

The FFP situation at Old Trafford is reported to be extremely tight as years of overspending finally catches up to the club. It’s even led to INEOS – who gained full control over the football operation at United last year – reportedly being open to selling the team’s academy graduates, including Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho.

And it appears Napoli are be ready to put INEOS’ willingness to the test with Criscitiello revealing talks over a potential offer in the region of €50 million for Garnacho.

#sportitalia #napoli @tvdellosport #conte @ManUtd @sscnapoli

                — Michele Criscitiello (@MCriscitiello) January 12, 2025

Translated Tweet: “SPORTITALIA EXCLUSIVE – Conte has decided: for the post-Kvara only one name: Antonio wants Alejandro Garnacho, a 2004 Spaniard from Manchester United. Price 50 million. Manna is already at work but Conte has shown the way. #sportitalia #napoli @tvdellosport #conte @ManUtd @sscnapoli.”

The Italian reporter contends “Manna is already at work”, referring to Napoli’s Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna. This suggests the Serie A side have already made contact with their Old Trafford counterparts over a move for Garnacho.

As an academy player, Garnacho’s sale would constitute a treasure trove from an FFP perspective. Furthermore, the transition to a 3-4-3 under Ruben Amorim has left the 20-year-old without an obvious place in the starting eleven, as he lacks the defensive skillset to play as a wingback and the technical quality to play in the number ten positions.

Garnacho is best deployed as a flying winger in a 4-3-3 on the left-hand side – the exact position Kvaratskhelia’s departure would free up in Napoli – and his pace and trickery would cause nightmares for Serie A defenders.

While there is a commendable ethos at Old Trafford around the promotion of youth, and every fan would be pained to see an academy graduate who has produced as many memorable moments as Garnacho has since he burst onto the scene, there is logic to the club entertaining this deal.

The Argentinian international is a rare player in the dressing room who will command a sizeable fee in the transfer market; and this is heightened by the fact he is not an obvious fit in Amorim’s system.

At a bare minimum, United need a new left wingback urgently, while a proven goal scorer and a more natural number ten/central midfielder are also likely to to be high on the Portuguese coach’s wish list this year.

Garnacho’s departure could fund one, if not two, of these potential signings without losing an obviously crucial piece of the jigsaw for Amorim, in the way that Mainoo or Leny Yoro’s sales would impact the long-term starting eleven.

It may simply have to be a price worth accepting if such an offer arrives for the 20-year-old winger to allow Amorim to continue to transform his new squad.

Manchester United have set their asking price for Alejandro Garnacho, who has been ‘mentioned’ by the Red Devils in talks over a swap deal with PSG and is wanted by Antonio Conte at Napoli.

Speculation over Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford has been rife since Amorim dropped him for the Manchester derby in December, with the winger unable to regain his place with any regularity since.

The Argentina international was previously seen as one of four ‘untouchable’ players in the Red Devils squad, along with Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, but amid struggles to raise any funds for a rebuild while sticking to the PSR guidelines, INEOS reportedly see every player as being available for the right price.

That, along with his frustration over the terms of an extension, is the reason for Chelsea’s interest in academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo and could also see Garnacho leave the club.

GIVEMESPORT claim Garnacho’s asking price is ‘not quite’ as high as the £100m they want for Mainoo, while Italian journalist Michele Criscitiello says United want just €50m (£42m) for the 20-year-old.

Criscitiello claims Napoli boss Antonio Conte wants Garnacho to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who’s set to leave the Serie A side for PSG for around £60m, with sporting director Giovanni Manna already working on the deal.

Ruben Amorim is desperate to bring players in this month, with wing-back a particular area of concern for the new head coach.

He’s supposedly set his sights on Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, whose future in the French capital is in major doubt as he enters the final 18 months of his current deal.

Reports earlier this week claimed the 22-year-old is not satisfied with his salary and is ‘very keen’ on a reunion with former Sporting coach Amorim; he’s told PSG that.

The Red Devils would either have to sell before making a move for Mendes, with PSG reportedly wanting around £50m for the Portugal international, or offer up a player in exchange. Hence ‘mentioning’ Garnacho in negotiations.

The Ligue 1 giants have previously been linked with Marcus Rashford, and continued interest would make things easy for United given the forward is on his way out this month anyway, but PSG have moved away from signing star names in recent times and Rashford looks destined for Serie A, although Arsenal are also thought to be in the mix.

Amorim was asked about the futures of Mainoo and Garnacho ahead of Man Utd’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday and insisted he wants to keep the promising pair at the club.

He said: “I really love my players. I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones,” he said.

“We know the position that the club is in at the moment, but we will see. I’m very happy, I like our players, especially the guys from our academy.”

Manchester United u19s completed the opening group stage of the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup on Saturday.

While one group of United youngsters compete at the Rewe Junior Cup, another took on Rangers, Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach at the 6-a-side Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup in Sindelfingen, Germany.

                    Vs. Rangers

United’s first opponents came in the shape of fellow British club, Rangers. United started slowly with Rangers taking an early lead after Jayden Ngwashi was sold a fake shot to open the space and finish past Will Murdock.

Still in the first half, James Scanlon had his shot blocked before the ball came to the Rangers forward, who brilliantly flicked it up to spin past Jacob Watson before running through to score.

An improved second half performance saw United get to grips with the speed of play and chances began to flow. Ashton Missin and Dan Armer were denied by good saves before Zach Baumann pulled back one with a low one touch finish.

Victor Musa had a pair of chances to level it up but failed to keep his efforts on target as the final whistle came with the score remaining 1-2 to Rangers.

                    Vs. Bayern Munich

Next up was Bayern Munich, who also took an early lead after finding too much space in front of United’s goal.

United drew it level with just a minute remaining in the second half, when James Bailey won the ball high up before poking it to Reece Munro to bundle in from close range.

United looked set to get their first point on the board but they weren’t able to hang on as Bayern found the winner with just four seconds left on the board. A redirected shot was initially saved by Murdock, but the keeper’s parry bounced off the post and back off of his head and into the goal to give Bayern the 1-2 victory.

                    Vs. Borussia Monchengladbach

The final match of the group saw United take on Borussia Monchengladbach with both sides sitting at the bottom of the group with 0 points.

United took the lead for the first time on the day in the first minute when Armer found Gabriele Biancheri at the back post to side foot into the roof of the net.

Biancheri was then fouled to earn a penalty but was unable to convert from the spot to extend United’s lead.

Monchengladbach turned the match on its head in the second half with two goals in the space of 30 seconds to earn a 1-2 win.

United finished the day at the bottom of the group but have a chance to redeem themselves on Sunday in the pre-finals group where they will take on VFB Stuttgart and Servette FC.

United squad: 1 Will Murdock, 2 Jayden Ngwashi, 3 Daniel Armer, 4 Reece Munro, 5 Zach Baumann, 6 James Bailey, 7 Ashton Missin (C), 8 Victor Musa, 9 Gabriele Biancheri, 10 James Scanlon, 11 Edward Ibrovic-Fletcher, 12 Jacob Watson

Manchester United u19s rounded out the group stage at the Rewe Junior Cup on Saturday by advancing to the second round.

United started the day against SV Rhume-Oder, where Dante Plunkett provided an early lead but the local side proved to be a tough nut to crack with some good defending and goalkeeping stopping United from driving up the scoring.

The group led by Adam Lawrence secured the three points with a 3-0 win in the end after further goals from Yuel Helafu and Junior Brown.

Another local side in JFV West Göttingen was the next opponent with United running the score up to 8-0.

Louie Bradbury led the scoring in the match with four, while Jim Thwaites and Plunkett notched a brace each.

The real test of the day then came against Borussia Monchengladbach, who United also met at the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup.

Plunkett gave United an early lead after Albert Mills cut out the Monchengladbach keeper Lindsay Gutaj’s pass.

The lead didn’t last for long though, with Gutaj rectifying his mistake within 30 seconds, running upfield to lay off the ball to be finished past Cameron Byrne-Hughes.

The German side took control then, scoring five unanswered goals. Keeper Gutaj got his name on the scoresheet as well with a well-taken goal after arriving late at the back to be teed up from the corner to win the match 1-6.

The group was rounded out with a 3-0 win over 1. SC 1911 Heiligenstadt thanks to goals from Thwaites, Bradbury, and Brown.

There was little to separate United from Monchengladbach and Hamburger SV at the top of the table with all three sides finishing on 15 points but United had to settle for third place due to goal difference.

But United still advance to the second stage on Sunday where they take on FC Schalke 04 and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

                      United squad: 1 Byrne-Hughes, 2 Kamason (C), 3 Mills, 4 Helafu, 5 Plunkett, 6 McCormack, 7 Brown, 8 Shah, 9 Bradbury, 10 Thwaites
