Major update on United winger’s future as hot favourites drop out of the race after offer rebuffed – report

Manchester United are midway through the January transfer window and are yet to make any notable moves in this year’s winter market.

Outgoings are required if United are to press on with bolstering Ruben Amorim’s squad, due to the financial restraints the club are currently working under.

Alejandro Garnacho was one of the players linked with a move away from Old Trafford with his status as an academy product making him a profitable asset to boost the books.

Italian giants Napoli looked to be the front-runners in the race for his signature but after seeing an offer rebuffed are now happy to focus on other targets this month.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the Serie A side submitted a £40 million for bid for the Argentine which was rejected by the United board.

With star man Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s exit close, Napoli are in the market for a replacement and Garnacho’s profile looked to fit the bill in Naples.

However, Antonio Conte is now happy to turn his attention elsewhere with the 2023 Scudetto Champions unwilling to match United’s asking price.

Garnacho’s valuation was estimated at a whopping €97.4m (£82.27m) by the CIES Football Observatory last week and it appears United are holding on for a fee closer to that figure.

Despite the deal now seemingly off the cards this month, agency sources maintain a deal for Garnacho could still be revived but it’s likely to now be in summer market.

Should the forward stay at Old Trafford this month he will be desperate to reclaim a regular starting place in the side.

Since Amorim’s arrival, the 20-year-old has struggled for consistency and found himself in and out of the side with his attitude being questioned by the new head coach.

However, there is clearly potential in a player who has been a rare shining light for United at times during the last two years and could yet prove a major asset to the club.

After starting back-to-back for the first time since early December, Garnacho will be vying for a spot in Amorim’s XI when Brighton visit Old Trafford this coming Sunday.

“I’d be offended by that”: United legend condemns potential sale of club’s “brightest spark”

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has blasted the potential sale of Kobbie Mainoo but has stated he could understand Alejandro Garnacho leaving.

The two youngsters were rare beacons of hope during last season and despite not hitting the same heights this year, they remain two key components of the squad.

January has seen numerous rumours swirling that United may be prepared to sanction the sale of Mainoo due to ongoing complications with his new contract and with Chelsea circling.

What’s more, Garnacho is said to be open to a move to SSC Napoli and the two clubs are thought to be in negotiations over a transfer for the Argentine.

The potential sale of two academy products has been met with disappointment from certain sections of the fanbase and the legendary midfielder also lambasted the potential exit of Mainoo.

Speaking on TNT Sports after the match versus Southampton last night he claimed, “it’d be absolutely ridiculous if the club had to sell him.”

The pundit referenced how long the player has been at Carrington and all the time and effort gone into his development would all go to waste if he were sold.

“He’s United’s brightest spark, the leading man who could be here for the next five to 10 years.”

Scholes was much less complimentary about Mainoo’s teammate and fellow academy product, Alejandro Garnacho, however.

Referencing a sale he asserted, “I can see it with Garnacho. I think United can get better than Garnacho.”

The pundit did admit that the South American is still young and there is time for his game to progress but stated, “he’s a little scruffy and his decision-making at times is really poor”.

Nonetheless, he did admit that whilst he would not be overly worried by United cashing in on Garnacho, he’d “be offended by” the sale of Mainoo.

“Want to make it clear”: United star strongly denies relationship with notorious criminal

Marcus Rashford has released a statement on social media about a photo that sees him appearing with controversial rapper Jake Fahri.

The 27 year old has had a tumultuous season where he has not played a game for United since the 12th of December.

He has missed every squad since then bar one and was also excluded from last night’s 3-1 win against Southampton.

Rashford looks likely to leave the club this January with FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund pushing for his signature.

The Englishman is once again in the headlines as The Manchester Evening News carry the news that the star took to social media to claim he had been contacted about the image ahead of a planned article about the photo.

Rashford denied having seen the photo and stated that he does not personally know the musician.

The post is understood to be connected to Jake Fahri, who murdered schoolboy Jimmy Mizen in 2008. The rapper called TEN, whose music boasts about killing a man, is believed to be 35-year-old Fahri according to a report by The Sun.

Fahri was released from prison in 2023 after serving 14 years for the murder.

Commenting on Instagram Rashford stated, “been contacted today by a tabloid informing me that they plan to publish a photo of me with a rapper apparently taken over a year ago.”

“I want to make it clear I have never seen this photo, I do not know this person, and I am not friends with him.”

Rashford then asserted like most footballers he will always allow people to take photos with him but he cannot “do a background check on every individual” who asks him one.

He then urged the tabloids to remove their focus on him and use their resources to “help raise positive awareness on the many charities and individuals that work daily throughout the UK to tackle knife crime.”

The England international signed off his post by claiming, “my deepest sympathy goes to the family of Jimmy Mizen.”

Scholes hits out at ‘so poor’ Man Utd star who ‘kept giving it back to’ Southampton

Paul Scholes singled out Rasmus Hojlund for criticism after Manchester United’s win over Southampton on Thursday, after which he advised the Red Devils players to “take a long hard look at yourselves”.

All except for Amad Diallo, who scored an incredible late hat-trick to give Ruben Amorim’s side an underserved victory over the Premier League’s bottom side.

Manuel Ugarte put the ball into his own net to give the Saints the lead at half-time, and he was taken off soon after the break along with Hojlund, after Kobbie Mainoo was substituted in the interval.

Joshua Zirkzee, who replaced Hojlund, made a big difference and has been praised for his ‘massive turnaround’ having been jeered off the pitch against Newcastle and made a scapegoat for their issues in recent weeks.

Hojlund managed just 18 touches (most of them terrible) before coming off and Scholes picked out the striker – who’s scored just 23 goals in 68 games since his £64m move from Atalanta – as being “so poor” for United.

“You can understand that (the home record weighing heavily on players), of course you can, but you always have to remember you are playing against the bottom of the table,” Scholes told TNT Sports’ live broadcast.

“This should be a chance for the players rubbing hands thinking right, Rasmus Hojlund: ‘This is where I am going to get my goals’. This is where we are going to come out and win three, four or five nil after two really good results.

“I wouldn’t say the performance at Arsenal was special, they survived with ten men. I thought they were better the week before at Liverpool.

“You expect them to come out and give it a real go and in ten minutes go and blast them, blast them away. But, give Southampton credit, they were brilliant at times and played some really good football.

“I thought they were a lot better than Manchester United, I thought tactically they were better. I thought technically they were better which was the most surprising thing, just the way they pass the ball into people and the way they receive it.

“[Ruben] Amorim said that about his own team, United were really poor. The side of the defender to pass the ball, the weight of pass, the control when it came into Rasmus Hojlund was so poor at times, he kept giving it back to them.

African superstar sets records tumbling after one-man show versus Southampton

Manchester United’s hero Amad sent numerous records tumbling yesterday after his sensational hat-trick versus Southampton.

United huffed and puffed for a long time in the match as they struggled to get to grips with a surprisingly feisty Saints’ team.

After falling behind just before half-time, United struggled to respond for most of the second half.

Amad came to the rescue as he scored a fine hat-trick in 12 minutes at the end of the match to give United a much-needed 3-1 win.

He is having by far and away his most productive season in the red of Man United as he has scored nine goals and provided seven assists in this campaign.

The Ivory Coast international became the first African player to reach double figures for goal involvements in a season for the club.

The club’s website has also highlighted some interesting records broken by the electric 22 year old.

“Amad is the first African player to score a hat-trick for United”, a fact he will surely cherish coming from a continent that is obsessed with the football club.

His trio of goals made him the second youngest United player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League after Wayne Rooney.

The club’s all-time goal scorer “achieved the feat against Bolton Wanderers in 2006.”

Amad is also the first United player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Cristiano Ronaldo did against Norwich City in April 2022.

Out of the current squad, only Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes had scored three goals in a game before the 22 year old’s star showing yesterday.

“Opta have reported that, since the division began in 1992, there have been only three players to score three goals from the 80th minute onwards.”

All three are United players as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four goals from the bench against Nottingham Forest in 1999 and Wayne Rooney also scored three late goals against Hull City in 2010.

Amad has now joined them after his spectacular showing last night.

He will next be in action when United welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, looking to win a rare two Premier League games on the bounce.

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United can “do better” than Alejandro Garnacho amid reports the Argentina international could leave in January, but it would be “absolutely ridiculous” to let another star leave this month.

Garnacho played the full 90 minutes against Southampton but his display was entirely overshadowed by Amad Diallo, who scored an incredible late hat-trick to save the Red Devils’ blushes against the Premier League’s bottom side.

Manuel Ugarte had put the ball into his own net to give the Saints a deserved lead and after Diallo struck in the 82nd, 90th and 94th minute to win all three points for his side, Scholes said the young Ivory Coast international was the only player to come out of the game with any credit.

Scholes said: “For 80 minutes that is as bad a performance as you’ll ever see especially against a team bottom of the league.

“I have to give Southampton credit, they are bottom of the league but they were so much better than Man United. The way they passed the ball, technically and tactically. That is probably why they are bottom of the league, because they can’t put teams away.

“Manchester United, Diallo was the one bright spark. I think the manager will still be disappointed with that performance.

“Against, as I said, a team who have really struggled to score and they concede goals all the time.

“I know Diallo has come and produced the win… he is the only one player who can take any credit out of this game tonight.”

United’s poor form this season – with that win only lifting them into 12th place – has highlighted the need for reinforcements, but PSR regulations mean the club has to sell before they buy to bring in new faces.

That’s why previously ‘untouchable’ players now have a price, with Napoli pushing to sign Garnacho and Chelsea keeping tabs on contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo.

Scholes insists he would be “offended” if United sold Mainoo, but gave the green light for Garnacho’s exit as he’s not convinced the “scruffy” forward is good enough for the club.

Asked about the prospect of selling Mainoo, Scholes told TNT Sports: “It would be absolutely ridiculous if the club had to sell him or Garnacho.

“All the hard work the club have had to do, he’s probably been since seven or eight years of age, and then to sell him for some PSR rules, it’s ridiculous.

“He’s United’s brightest spark, he’s the leading man who could be here for the next five to ten years.”

Asked if United may need to sell in order to finance a rebuild under Amorim, Scholes replied: “I can see that with Garnacho, yeah.

“I think United could get better than Garnacho, although he’s a young player and there’s still probably better to come, I still think he’s a little bit scruffy in his technique at times, I think his decision-making sometimes is really poor.

“I wouldn’t be afraid or I wouldn’t be worried if they sold Garnacho. But Mainoo, I would be offended by that.

“The lad [Garnacho] is absolutely capable, there’s no doubt about that, but finding him a position in this team has been a struggle.”

“Official offer”: Solskjaer close to sensational return to football management – report

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly set to become the new manager of Besiktas.

The Norwegian has been out of work since leaving the Red Devils in November 2021.

The club legend had spells at Molde and Cardiff City but by far his biggest role was at United.

He spent 168 matches as the manager, winning 91 at a win percentage of 54%. He finished second and third in the league but failed to win a trophy, narrowly losing the Europa League final on penalties to Villarreal.

Solskjaer has been linked to numerous jobs, including international roles with the Republic of Ireland and Sweden, but has yet to find the right fit.

It seems that he could now be on the cusp of returning to club football following reports from Turkiye.

Journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu has reported that “Beşiktaş made an official offer to Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær.”

Fellow Turkish reporter, Sercan Dikme, has taken the story further and claims that the former United man is about to accept the move.

It is reported by Sports Digitale that “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is about to become the new head coach of Beşiktaş.”

He “is expected to watch the Beşiktaş-Samsunspor match from the stands. He will be in charge of the Athletic Bilbao match.”

It was reported in December 2023 that Solskjaer had been offered the Besiktas job but eventually Fernando Santos was appointed instead.

The Turkish side are currently in sixth place in the league table but only one point away from the European spots.

They also find themselves 28th in the Europa League table, one point from the all-important 24th which guarantees qualification to the next round, with two fixtures remaining.

What’s more, the prospect of Solskjaer joining the Turkish Super Lig would place him in the same city as another former United manager, Jose Mourinho who is in charge of Fenerbahce.

The two are scheduled to meet on the 4th May, in what would be a fixture of massive interest to United fans all around the world should Solskjaer officially join the Kara Kartallar.

Hargreaves slams ‘mad’ Man Utd transfer decision in ‘huge blow’ after Southampton win

Former Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves thinks the Red Devils could be making a big mistake by allowing Marcus Rashford to leave in January.

The Red Devils are reportedly close to the edge of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and will need to sell to spend in the January transfer window.

Reports have claimed that Alejandro Garnacho has been the subject of a bid from Napoli, while another academy product Kobbie Mainoo has been interesting Premier League rivals Chelsea.

One player who is extremely likely to leave before the winter window shuts is Rashford with the Man Utd forward revealing in an interview with Henry Winter that he is ready for a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford.

But Hargreaves has urged Man Utd – who beat Southampton 3-1 on Thursday night – to keep Rashford – who has been linked with a number of loan moves this month – and has described their decision to allow him to leave as “madness”.

Hargreaves told Premier League Productions: “I don’t know if anybody wants to play counter-attacking style, especially not Manchester United, you’re meant to play on the front foot, you’re meant to dominate the ball.

“That’s why Erik ten Hag got the job because he played this Ajax way, they dominated the ball, that’s why they got rid of David de Gea to get [Andre] Onana, to get a ball-playing goalkeeper.

“But that didn’t materialise, United were best on the counter attack. Ten Hag’s best performance were on the counter-attack, like under Ole Gunnar [Solskjaer].

“If you look at United under Amorim against Liverpool, Arsenal, City, where are they good – counter-attack. I think when you play with two central midfield players, they ended up with [Toby] Collyer and Bruno Fernandes, you’re not going to dominate the ball, and that’s against a team who are 20th in the Premier League.

“I do think it is a work in progress on many levels, goalkeeper is set, defensively they’re not bad but they need work in the middle of the pitch and they need to sort the striker position out.

“But obviously losing Marcus Rashford could be a huge blow, talk about Garnacho potentially leaving, that’s a worry.”

When asked what he would do if he was the Man Utd manager, Hargreaves added: “Nobody’s leaving… Rashford’s not leaving, Mainoo’s not leaving, Garnacho… nobody is leaving.

“They’re your best players, we’re going to help integrate these and build around them, you’re not going to get better than them.

“To let these guys go on loan and pay half their wages is madness. Impossible, I wouldn’t let it happen.

“I know maybe Marcus wants to go play somewhere, knuckle down and sort it out. Look at where Harry Maguire was a couple of years ago and now he’s got a new contract.

“Football changes real quick and you want to keep your most talented players here. I think Garnacho, Mainoo and Marcus certainly are a part of that group and I think they could have a bright future if they just sort it out.”

Kobbie Mainoo was among four Manchester United stars picked out by Ruben Amorim for a “lack of enthusiasm” after their comeback win over Southampton on Thursday.

Amad Diallo scored an incredible late hat-trick to save United’s blushes after the Red Devils had been outplayed by the side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League on their own path for the vast majority of the game.

Manuel Ugarte scored an own goal to give the Saints a first-half lead which could an perhaps should have been by more before Diallo scored three in a little over ten minutes at the end of the game to paper over significant cracks at Old Trafford.

Speaking on TNT Sports after the final whistle, Amorim named four players he felt “lacked enthusiasm”, including Mainoo, who was hooked at half-time.

“It’s not just tiredness but playing in this stadium, we lost the last three games here,” said the United boss. “The pressure is different because we try to press the opponent in the build-up and you can feel the difficulties.

“Matheus [Fernandes] between the lines and [Tyler] Dibling between the lines caused us a lot of problems. We have difficulties to press high at the moment. This team is not used to doing that.

“It seems a lack of enthusiasm. Ugarte is late. [Kobbie] Mainoo is late. Bruno [Fernandes] going outside when the ball is inside. In one transition, Leny [Yoro] cannot press the guy.

“These small things push the team behind and we get nervous without the ball. When you have one opportunity you feel the team can control the game better. I want to be fair to my players. It was a lack of speed and a lack of control in the game.”

Amorim did though give credit to Southampton, who were the better side for most of the game.

“A very difficult game, a game of two halves,” he said. “They did a very good job, Southampton, creating space between the lines. [Kamaldeen Sulemana] with a lot of space, we had a lot of difficulty to stop that player.

“When they lose their physicality, we find the space to use. The feeling is we have so much to do. The team is really tired. It was a win, it was good. Let’s continue.”

When asked for his thoughts on Amad’s display, the 39-year-old added: “Even in the first half, every time Amad gets the ball he can push the ball. He pushes the other team into the final third.

“That is really important. We didn’t have a good game, but at this moment, winning is the most important thing.”

The result pushed United above Tottenham and West Ham into 12th place in the Premier League having won just seven of their 21 matches, but they’re still closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

80% duels lost, 0 dribbles, 0 shots on target: This United star looked lost vs Southampton, Amorim has a major headache to solve

Manchester United were second best for 80 minutes but turned the game on its head in the final 12 minutes to eventually run away with it in the end as they claimed a 3-1 win at Old Trafford against Southampton on Thursday.

Amad Diallo turned out to be the matchwinner on his own as the Ivorian netted a 12-minute hattrick to spare the blushes of his head coach.

Ruben Amorim had revealed that he would learn a lot about his team from tonight’s game and he must have figured out that his team’s biggest weakness lies in front of goal.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were guilty of spurning gilt-edged chances in either half while the form of Rasmus Hojlund is a huge concern for the Portuguese.

                      Rasmus had another shocker

The Dane has now gone eight games without a goal but his general play was shocking again as he failed to hold on to the ball under pressure, this time against the bottom Premier League side.

The United No 9 won an abysmal two duels out of 10 (one ground duel and one aerial duel) while losing possession six times. He did not manage a single dribble, nor shot on target.

The striker also did not manage a single cross or long ball nor did he make any defensive contributions (all stats via sofascore).

The Denmark international had a mere 18 touches and completed eight passes out of 10 while making two key passes, one of which should have been finished off by Garnacho in the first half.

He looked frustrated whenever things did not go his way and Amorim was right to take him off early in the second half for Joshua Zirkzee, who made an immediate impact and was by far a major improvement on the Dane.

He is only 21 but United need more than just potential, they need their striker to score and affect the game in a positive manner but Hojlund was anything but.

                      Amorim needs more from Rasmus

With Marcus Rashford’s future up in the air and Zirkzee also being linked with a move away from Manchester, Amorim would have expected a lot more from the former Atalanta star.

Hojlund often is more focussed on fighting the defender while playing with his back to goal than with using his brain to outsmart the opposition.

This season he has been very easy to play against and in all honesty, he does not look like he has improved much from his debut campaign.

On current form, Zirkzee deserves to start ahead of him in the game against Brighton on Sunday but Amorim will take the final call.
