Amorim blames United’s lacklustre performance in win vs. Southampton on this surprise reason

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has blamed tiredness for his players’ ineffective and uninspiring performances in their 3-1 win over Southampton.

A sensational late hat-trick from Amad Diallo dragged a below-par United to an unlikely victory over bottom-side Southampton in the Premier League.

For large spells of the match, United were second best and deservedly fell behind courtesy of a Manuel Ugarte own goal just before the break. Staring down the barrel of another home loss, Amad equalised for the hosts with eight minutes of the 90 left on the clock.

The Ivorian was at it again moments later, completing the turnaround in the 90th minute. He added a stoppage-time third to complete his hat-trick and send United to 12th place in the table.

Speaking to BBC after the final whistle, Amorim conceded that United were poor. He explained that the players may have been tired following last weekend’s FA Cup triumph over Arsenal, which ended up being settled via a penalty shootout.

“It was not a great game. After Liverpool and Arsenal, I felt the team was a little tired. We were always late, especially in the first half with some problems between the lines.”

“The speed of Kamaldeen Sulemana was really hard to catch and they created some chances also. But we improved in the second half and they lost some strength because they were doing man-to-man.

“Then we took control of the game and created chances. You have a feeling that it’s going to be hard on them, but we deserved the win.”

“I wasn’t surprised by Southampton. I knew the coach puts a lot of intensity. His style is known in Italy. They were strong in duels in the first half. But in the second, they lost some power and we took advantage of that. The most important thing in this moment is to win and we did that.”

When asked about Amad, Amorim replied, “He did a great job. But he has a lot to improve. He played in a different position today. He took advantage of his ability in the second half.”

“The last goal was similar to the one at Everton with the recovery. He did a good job but he has to prepare for the next game.”

“All the players in this team have the same responsibility. He doesn’t have to step up. That thing will appear if he does the work. If he train well, good things are going to happen.”

“He has the same responsibility as every player who play for Manchester United. He is in a great moment and he is having a very good season. We see this in the past with a lot of players in our squad, so he has to continue to work and play like that.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion at The Theatre of Dreams.

2 key passes, 9/12 passing: This United sub showed Amorim why he should be starting in impactful cameo vs Southampton

Manchester United defeated Southampton 3-1 in what was a rollercoaster of a match on Thursday night.

Desperate to improve their fortunes, Man United were in need of a home win against the team sitting in last place in the league table.

While it appeared as if United were on the cusp of a humiliating 1-0 defeat, everything changed in the 82nd minute when Amad Diallo equalised to get the hosts back into the game.

Although Amad showed great composure to execute the perfect counter-attack, it was Joshua Zirkzee who engineered the scoring opportunity, picking Amad out with a creative pass.

Coming on for Rasmus Hojlund in the 53rd minute, Zirkzee helped to significantly improve United’s performance following a shambolic first half.

During his cameo, Zirkzee attempted two dribbles, successfully completing one. He also took one shot that was blocked.

While lacking firepower up front, Zirkzee more than made up for this with his impressive display in the middle of the park.

Taking just 22 touches, the Dutch forward completed nine of 12 passes while creating two key passes, one of which led to Amad’s opening goal.

Zirkzee’s physicality was lacking, however. He won two of five ground duels and just one of three aerial duels.

Interestingly, the substitute also helped his team in defence, blocking a shot to safeguard United’s comeback win.

Despite his limited exposure to the ball, Zirkzee showed how clinical he is, making the most of his time in the match to push United to a late comeback win.

Given his continued improvement and Rasmus Hojlund’s poor form, United fans must be wondering when Ruben Amorim will give the Dutch youngster a more regular role in his starting 11 going forward.

Amorim makes damning admission about his United players after comeback win vs. Southampton

Amad Diallo scored a stunning late hat-trick as Manchester United turned what seemed certain to be an embarrassing loss into a thrilling win over Southampton at Old Trafford.

United looked like they were heading for a fourth consecutive Premier League home defeat as they struggled to break down Southampton, who took the lead in the 43rd minute of proceedings after Manuel Ugarte guided the ball into the back of his own net.

However, Amad, who signed a new long-term contract just a week ago, came in clutch in the dying embers of the match to secure all three points for the hosts.

The Ivorian was the hero of the hour as he equalised with just eight minutes remaining before going on to strike twice more to ensure the Saints were well and truly sunk.

After the match, Amorim spoke to TNT Sports [via BBC] and remarked, ” In the end it is good. A very difficult game, a game of two halves.”

“They did a very good job Southampton. Creating space in-between the lines. Number 20 [Kamaldeen Sulemana] with a lot of space. We had a lot of difficulty to stop that player.”

“When they lose their physicality, we find the space to use. The feeling is we have so much to do – the team is really tired.”

“It was a win, it was good – let’s continue.”

Amorim lauded Amad for his contributions, indicating that he was good throughout the match and not just in the late stages.

“Even in the first half, every time Amad gets the ball he can push the ball.”

“He pushes the other team into the final third – that is really important. We didn’t have a good game, but at this moment, winning is the most important thing.”

Amorim refuted suggestions that his players were not enthusiastic enough about the game, following their FA Cup triumph over Arsenal last weekend.

“It seems like a lack of enthusiasm. Ugarte is late and Mainoo is late, Bruno Fernandes going outside when the ball is inside.”

“One transition and Yoro cannot catch the guy – small things push the team behind, and then we get nervous.”

“Today was not a lack of enthusiasm, it was a lack of control in the game.”

On whether the current crop of players are suited to his system, Amorim replied, “They are not suited to playing like that. With the ball, you saw, we had some patterns.” This damning admission from the Portuguese coach may be slightly concerning to a section of supporters.

Up next for United is Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Man Utd 3-1 Southampton: Amad scores late hat-trick to save Amorim from embarrassing loss

Amad Diallo scored a 12-minute hat-trick to earn Manchester United a 3-1 comeback win over bottom-placed Southampton in the Premier League on Thursday.

A 43rd-minute Ugarte own goal put the Saints ahead at Old Trafford before Amad Diallo scored a late hat-trick to save Ruben Amorim’s blushes.

The Red Devils were shocking days after they knocked title contenders Arsenal out of the FA Cup on penalties but picked up three points thanks to the inspirational Amad.

Kamaldeen Sulemana gave Manchester United right-centre-back Leny Yoro a torrid time with his pace and dribbling, somehow consistently isolating the young Frenchman despite the hosts starting with five defenders.

As well as Sulemana, young winger Tyler Dibling shone for the Saints, forcing a wonderful low save from Andre Onana in the first half. His shot rebounded into the path of Mateus Fernandes, who was also denied by the Cameroonian.

Kobbie Mainoo struggled next to Ugarte in the middle of the park and was substituted off for Antony at the break.

Antony missed an open goal after an hour, summing up his career in England.

Amorim’s side drew level in the 82nd minute when Amad struck past Aaron Ramsdale.

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee drove forward with the ball and found Amad, whose first effort was blocked by Kyle Walker-Peters, falling straight back into his path before finding the ball of the net.

United piled on the pressure late on and went ahead through Amad, who has comfortably been Amorim’s best attacking player since replacing Erik ten Hag.

The Ivorian then completed his hat-trick after Taylor Harwood-Bellis made a horrendous error in his own box.

8 ball recoveries, 6 shots, 3 chances created: Brilliant United star inspired sensational comeback win vs. Southampton

Manchester United came back from a goal down to beat Southampton 3-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

A toothless and uninspiring United went a goal down just before the break as Manuel Ugarte guided the ball into the back of his own net from a corner-kick routine.

The Red Devils struggled to break down Southampton’s stubborn defence for large spells of the second half and it seemed like they were headed for defeat.

However, Amad Diallo had other ideas.

The Ivorian equalised almost on his own as he cut through down the right wing before lashing inside the near post. He struck what appeared to be the winner in the 90th minute before completing his hat-trick in added time to ensure all three points were secured.

After his hat-trick, Amad has become the first United player to achieve the feat since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022.

He has also become the second youngest-ever United player to clinch his first Premier League hat-trick (22 years and 189 days). Only Wayne Rooney has scored a top-flight hat-trick for the club at a younger age.

During the time he was on the pitch, Amad managed an individual pass accuracy of 87%.

He touched the ball 89 times, 16 of which were inside the Saints’ box. The 22-year-old fired six shots at Aaron Ramsidale, three of which resulted in goals.

Amad made an impressive eight ball recoveries. He attempted five take-ons, successfully completing four of them. He also created three chances.

United certainly rode their luck against the Saints but luckily, Amad was on hand to save them.

The result has left the Red Devils in 12th position in the Premier League. The next assignment for Ruben Amorim and his players is a Sunday home meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion.

“One of the best weeks of my life”: United’s hat-trick hero reacts to superstar performance

A virtuoso display from Amad Diallo spared Manchester United’s blushes as they came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at Old Trafford this evening.

The 22-year-old scored a 12-minute hat-trick to salvage three points from a largely woeful display from Ruben Amorim’s side.

It was Amad’s first senior hat-trick, and came less than a week into his new contract with the Red Devils. When asked how he was feeling, he told TNT Sports after the final whistle that this is “maybe one of the best weeks of my life.”

But the self-effacing Ivorian immediately followed this comment by adding “I’m happy for this win because this team deserved to win this game.”

That is a fairly bold claim given United’s turgid performance against the team sitting rock-bottom of the Premier League, but the exciting forward was understandably radiating confidence and positivity after the blockbuster ending to the game.

When asked why it took some 70 minutes for United to turn up, Amad said: “We know we have quality players in this team, we need some time to be more hungry.

“Today we showed at the end we were the best team on the pitch and I’m so happy for the team today because this team deserved it.”

But, keen to press the point that the youngster has been a talismanic figure for Amorim’s team of late, the interviewer asked if he felt a responsibility to dig the side out of holes like the one they found themselves in today.

“I’m ready to play every position, I’m ready to play right wing-back, number 10, wherever the manager likes to put me. I’m ready to fight for this club.

“I’m so happy to play where the manager wants me to play, I’m so happy to score a hat-trick, but the most important thing is the win for the club.”

The overall performance halted the momentum built from thrilling results against Liverpool and Arsenal, but Amad’s late heroics certainly restored some feelgood factor.

It undoubtedly papered over some gaping cracks, and United’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday is crucial to see how the team kick on.

Joe has spent more than half his life writing about football and all of it following United. As a child he told a doctor his name was ‘Paul Scholes’, but could never pick a pass like him no matter how much he tried.

After difficult first-half, this big decision by Amorim changed the game for United vs Southampton

After difficult first-half, this big decision by Amorim changed the game for United vs Southampton

Three goals in the space of the last 12 minutes changed the complexion of the game as Manchester United eventually ran out 3-1 winners against bottom-of-the-table Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday.

It was the visitors who were the better side for most of the game with Andre Onana forced to produce a couple of top-drawer saves to deny the Saints from scoring more than one.

And ultimately, Amad Diallo, like he has done plenty of times in the recent past, single-handedly took the game by the scruff of its neck and netted a glorious hattrick to ensure another famous comeback win for the Red Devils.

After a difficult evening, a stirring late fightback can often distort the facts but Ruben Amorim will realise his team were really lucky on the night.

                Rasmus struggled again

The defence, which held firm in glorious fashion away at the Emirates less than a week ago, looked extremely fragile against a team which had not scored a set-piece goal before today.

Ivan Juric’s side could have scored multiple times while the home side spurned two glorious chances of their own, through Alejandro Garnacho and Antony.

But the biggest worry for the head coach will be the form of his go-to striker at the moment, Rasmus Hojlund. He has looked lost on his own in most Premier League games but the Dane was expected to do better against a struggling side like Southampton.

But none of the 21-year-old’s touches came off, and he often failed to hold on to the ball under pressure and it was unsurprising to see Joshua Zirkzee being brought on early in the second half.

The Dutchman was a breath of fresh air, using his body to great effect to win the ball in aerial and ground duels while he managed to turn and play the right ball most of the time as well, thereby slowly putting the visitors back under pressure.

He won the assist for Amad’s equaliser, and on current evidence, the former Bologna ace deserves to start ahead of the hapless Hojlund.

                Eriksen, Zirkzee changed the game

Amorim was not afraid of making substitutions early in the game and they paid off in the end. Kobbie Mainoo, who struggled in the first half, did not emerge for the second 45 minutes.

And after the hosts had equalised, Amorim immediately brought on Christian Eriksen, sensing the brittleness at the back for the Saints, and the Denmark international made an immediate impact.

His delicious dink over the static backline found the onrushing Ivorian who made no mistake in what as yet another difficult chance made to look very easy.

Amorim had said he would learn a great deal about his players from the game and despite the win, the team did not paint a pretty picture of themselves.

Five things we learnt as United defeat Southampton 3-1 thanks to electric star

Manchester United welcomed Southampton to Old Trafford this evening, looking for their first Premier League win since the 15th of December.

Andre Onana returned in goal after Altay Bayindir’s FA Cup heroics at the weekend and Leny Yoro was recalled back to the starting line up alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

With the suspension of Diogo Dalot, Amad Diallo moved back into a wing-back spot and Noussair Mazraoui started on the left.

Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte started in the midfield, with Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund ahead of them.

Despite huge speculation over his future, Alejandro Garnacho made a return to the starting eleven.

Here are five things we learnt from the match.

                  United’s corner nightmare goes on

After holding off Arsenal last weekend from set pieces, it seemed that United had turned a corner and were perhaps learning from their past errors.

That notion came crashing down in the 43rd minute when a Saints’ corner bounced in off Ugarte to give the visitors a deserved lead.

The goal was certainly misfortunate, as no Southampton player was close to the ball, but it once again exposed the soft underbelly that Amorim’s team still has.

Every team that plays United must massively fancy their chances of scoring from a cross or header and it is something that the club must put an end to if they are to continue to drag themselves up the table.

United’s attack is the bluntest in memory

Many fans turned up to Old Trafford expecting a strong start against the worst team in the league.

After 45 minutes, nobody would have believed it wasn’t Ruben Amorim’s side who were propping up the Premier League table.

Any chance they had was snatched, rushed and executed with very little confidence at all.

The attack not only lacked ideas and quality, but in possession they were equally as poor. Their play was characterised with lethargic effort and little to no movement off the ball.

For the first hour or more, on the odd occasion the Red Devils did get on the ball, they could hardly string more than a few passes together before carelessly gifting it back to their opposition.

Leny Yoro still has a steep learning curve

It seems harsh to single out the young Frenchman for criticism when many of his teammates did not cover themselves in much glory either today.

Nonetheless, Yoro was routinely beaten for pace and skill by Southampton’s winger Kamaldeen Sulemana.

The Ghanaian tormented the youngster down the left hand side of the pitch and could have easily scored a goal or two in the first half if he had kept his composure.

Sadly, the roasting continued in the second half as time and time again Sulemana proved too hot to handle for the United number 15.

The 19 year old has shown great potential and demonstrated tremendous mettle to step up and take a penalty in the shootout win versus Arsenal on Sunday. However, he still has a lot to learn before he is ready to start regularly in United’s backline.

                  Joshua Zirkzee deserves to start

The Dutchman was the hero on Sunday when he converted the winning penalty at the Emirates and many assumed he would get a chance to start tonight.

Instead Hojlund was given the nod and did little to impress during his time on the pitch.

While Zirkzee did not set the world on fire, he did combine play much better and was significantly more involved in the play.

The 23 year old also picked up an assist when he played in Amad, who fired in an equaliser for the home side.

The Dutchman may not be the most prolific but he certainly combines better with his fellow attackers and should get the chance from the start against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Amad is this season’s Kobbie Mainoo

Last season was lit up by Mainoo’s emergence as a star in the team and this year has equally been illuminated by the presence of the Ivorian.

He threatened his talent last season with a handful of vital goals but he has really come into his own this season.

The most impressive thing about the 22 year old is that he never hides and he keeps showing himself even in the toughest of moments.

Even when he was losing the ball and nothing would come off, he kept on running at the Southampton defence and got his reward with two late goals to give United a 2-1 lead.

Nothing summed up the youngster more than his hat-trick goal in the 93rd minute of play, he closed down the Southampton defender and tucked the ball into an empty net to round off a stunning 12 minutes of action.

Not many of this team clearly have the DNA of a Manchester United player, Amad definitely does.

A sigh of relief: This late Amorim change handed United the victory in dramatic late 3-1 win over Southampton

It was a must-win match against the team at the foot of the Premier League table. Given Man United’s blockbuster FA Cup victory over Arsenal, the Old Trafford fans would have been justified to have high expectations for their team.

Sadly, despite being United’s easiest fixture of the season on paper, Ruben Amorim’s men struggled against minnows Southampton, who had the hosts against the ropes for much of the contest. It ultimately took some quick thinking from Amad Diallo, as well as a clever substitution by Amorim, to turn a humiliating loss into a last-ditch win over the 20th-placed team in the league.

As expected, the hosts dominated possession after kick-off; however, they started off slow, choosing to casually maintain possession as opposed to threatening the Southampton defence.

Three minutes in, Manuel Ugarte won a corner. Bruno Fernandes swung in a threatening cross to force a save from goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Soon after, the underdogs began to press United heavily, forcing the home team to play out from the back. For a prolonged period, United struggled to get the ball out of their final third.

In the 15th minute, it was the underdogs who got the first shot of the match. Mateus Fernandes fired an attempt on goal that Andre Onana comfortably caught. Despite being a soft shot, it showed Southampton’s intention to come away with a result.

A minute later, Amad raced into the box, laying the ball off to Alejandro Garnacho in the centre. He passed to Fernandes, whose shot was deflected out for a corner. Amad’s cross was cleared out of play by Tyler Dibling.

On the cusp of 20 minutes, Rasmus Hojlund sprinted into the box, slotting a juicy through ball to Garnacho, who blasted his shot wide. It was an unforgivable error, given the clear goalscoring opportunity that lay before Garnacho. No wonder Hojlund kicked the post in frustration in the aftermath.

Garnacho made a dazzling run, dribbling past the Southampton defence and attempting two shots which were both blocked.

In the 27th minute, Dibling weaved past the United defence, breezing past Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligtforcing a last-ditch save from Onana. The Old Trafford crowd held their breath when Fernandes lined up the rebound, which Onana bravely saved as well. United came agonisingly close to falling behind against the underdogs.

Kamaldeen Sulemana produced a great solo display to dribble past De Ligt and Martinez, only to curl his shot wide of the far post. Yet again, Southampton came close to opening the scoring.

Just three minutes before the break, Southampton scored from a corner as Ugarte turned the ball into his own net. Just moments before, Amorim had been shaking his head in disapproval, almost as if he had predicted what was to come.

During one minute of stoppage time, Fernandes was booked for dissent as he called for a penalty due to an alleged foul on Amad.

Boos echoed around Old Trafford as the half-time whistle blew. It was a humiliating moment for United, who had fallen behind at home to the bottom team in the league. Clearly, a stern half-time team talk from Amorim was needed. United had to show more aggression on the attack and desire in order to find a way back into a game that should have been a straightforward victory without any hiccups.

As United emerged from the tunnel, it was evident that Amorim changed tactics. Antony came on for Kobbie Mainoo, meaning that Fernandes had been pushed into a central midfield role.

Barely a minute after the restart, Antony blasted a shot goalward that was deflected inches over the crossbar. Fernandes provided him with an opportune through ball just metres away from goal. Already, United looked rejuvenated.

On the opposite end of the field, Kyle Walker-Peters breezed into the box, only for Ugarte to deflect the ball out for a corner.

52 minutes in, Martinez was booked for a reckless tackle on the edge of the box.

Before the free-kick could be taken, Ugarte and Rasmus Hojlund were taken off for Toby Collyer and Joshua Zirkzee.

The free-kick was cleared out for a corner. Fortunately, this time, the cross was headed out of danger by De Ligt, meaning a repeat of the opening goal was avoided.

In the 57th minute, Sulemana launched another blistering sprint into the box, beating Yoro convincingly. Fortunately, his shot went wide of the far post, meaning the visitors did not double their lead.

A minute later, it was United’s turn to come agonisingly close to scoring. Garnacho played a ball to Antony, whose shot was caught by the keeper. Antony must have been frustrated with himself, given that the ball actually went past the keeper to give him a practically open-goal opportunity.

On the hour mark, Garnacho took a shot from outside the box that Ramsdale caught.

While United continued pressing into the visitors’ final third, they appeared lost and confused, unable to craft a threatening attacking opportunity that would catch their opponents off guard.

13 minutes from time, Garnacho attempted a shot from a tight angle that the keeper confidently saved. It was a clear sign of desperation from the Argentine, with opportunities being few and far between.

Moments later, Fernandes attempted an innovative lobbed shot that the keeper parried. The ball soared over the face of the goal before being cleared. United then won a free-kick, which was wasted by Amad, who kicked the ball out of touch.

A minute later, relief swept across Old Trafford as Amad redeemed himself. Zirkzee passed a through ball to Amad on the wing, who cut into the box and blasted the ball past the keeper to draw United level. Finally, the comeback was one with nine minutes of regular time left on the clock.

Before the restart, Amorim made his final two substitutions. Harry Maguire came on for Yoro, while Christian Eriksen replaced Noussair Mazraoui.

The substitution clearly helped, as a minute before time, Eriksen played a clever through ball to Amad, who fired his volley into the back of the net to hand United a lead at the death.

Yet again, Amorim’s substitutions made all the difference, completely changing United’s fortunes.

With two minutes left of the five minutes of allotted stoppage time, Amad sealed his hat trick. The winger enjoyed a give-and-go with Eriksen, running into the box and burying the ball into the back of the net after catching Ramsdale off guard.

It was an uncomfortable match for United overall, yet the final score was all that mattered as Old Trafford celebrated at the full-time whistle. Amorim will surely want to review his team selection and tactics, given the major contrast between his team’s first- and second-half performances.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Fernandes, Hojlund, Yoro, Amad, Garnacho, Ugarte, Mainoo
Subs: Antony, Collyer, Zirkzee, Maguire, Eriksen
