Amad Diallo rescues Man United from themselves again with absurd hat-trick rescue act against Southampton

Amad Diallo rescues Man United from themselves again with absurd hat-trick rescue act against Southampton

They don’t deserve him, do they?

Even before this absurd one-man rescue mission turned an apparent 1-0 defeat against Southampton into a wildly flattering 3-1 win it has long been possible to idly wonder what depths to which United’s season might have sunk without Amad Diallo.

There is now no need to wonder how bad it might have looked. The answer is: this bad. For 80 minutes, this looked set to be a new humiliating low for United in a season full of them. Given a genuine runaround by a side marooned at the foot of the table, on course even to be the worst Premier League team of all time, so chaotically confused at the back that they conceded from a corner for the 10th time this season to a team scoriing that way for the first.

But for a couple of decent Peter Schmeichel impressions from Andre Onana, the hole from which Amad would eventually and spectacularly extract his team could have been far deeper. Had Kamaldeen Sulemana had even a smidge of final-decision composure to match the rest of his performance, not even Amad would have been able to do anything about this.

For the first hour of this game, United were abysmal and Southampton excellent. And the most shocking thing about that is that it wasn’t shocking. Apart from the Southampton being excellent part.

There is not a Manchester United fan alive who wouldn’t have foreseen this kind of performance on the back of the sterling efforts at Liverpool and Arsenal recently. Ruben Amorim hinted at it after the Liverpool game; Bruno Fernandes flat out said it. What United showed us here against the Saints would tell us far more about them than any heroic occasion-rising for those big games.

And really, despite the ridiculousness of what Amad did between the 82nd and 94th minutes, we still have our answer.

Bruno tried to get United moving in the right direction in the first half, but there were just never the numbers or the endeavour or simply the bravery to put Southampton under sustained pressure.

United for the first hour of this game managed the neat trick of playing with a penned-in back five that left them woefully short of ideas and purpose going forward yet without Leny Yoro ever getting the assistance he so desperately and obviously needed in his mismatch of a contest with Sulemana.

Time and again the Southampton attacker found himself spinning away from Yoro having yet again managed to engineer a one-on-one race with only one winner. While Ruben Amorim’s second-half substitutes would have a sizeable impact on the eventual outcome, the oceans of time that passed without seemingly any attempt from the United boss to provide any kind of remedy for the most glaring problem imaginable was deeply vexing.

Southampton in that first two-thirds of the game had heroes everywhere you looked. Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling were excellent behind Sulemana’s rampaging runs, Joe Aribo dominated the midfield battle against Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis – who would end the night narrowly failing to score an equaliser before a horror show for the third goal – was imperious in the air and composed on the ground.

For 80 minutes, Kyle Walker-Peters seemed to have the measure of Amad too, right up until he absolutely and entirely didn’t.

Everywhere else you looked were red-shirted horror stories. Alejandro Garnacho played precisely like you might expect a man to play having spent the last 48 hours being linked with Tottenham. The very idea of leaping from this frying-pan into that fire would be enough to wrack anyone with self-doubt, and Garnacho had plenty. He missed glaringly from United’s one coherent move in the first half having been neatly picked out by Rasmus Hojlund, and had an evening riddled with questionable decision-making and worse execution. We’ve all been there.

Neither Ugarte nor Mainoo made it to the hour mark, and neither could have a single complaint given how second-best United found themselves against what is with all due respect not the most heralded of Southampton midfields.

Yoro’s time on the pitch was universally torrid. Lisandro Martinez ran about a bit while looking generally confused, Matthijs De Ligt made some desperate last-ditch interventions in the middle while spending much of the night studiously trying not to see what was happening to Yoro just to his right.

Noussair Mazraoui – who has been one of United’s main sources of relief and comfort this season – was never able to provide anything of value in the ‘wing’ element of his job description in this system and even Amad – clearly United’s least bad outfield player even in that absolute abomination of a first half – showed a fair bit of defensive naivety in failing to offer any real help to the perma-beleaguered Yoro.

Amorim made one change at half-time and could frankly have made five. There were few who could have complained. But when the half-time answer if Antony, the question can only be a grim one.

He somehow contrived to miss an absolute and literal sitter when it was still 1-0, his decision to try and score while sat on his arse enough to cause even Ally McCoist on co-comms to lose his sense of humour momentarily.

By then, Amorim’s other changes had started to take effect, though. That Hojlund and Ugarte lasted only eight minutes of the second half was just as telling as Mainoo’s half-time hooking. Their replacements both made a difference, with the only caveat being that they could scarcely fail to improve the standard.

Joshua Zirkzee added a much-needed pep and fizz to United’s attack, Toby Collyer doing likewise to the previously soporific midfield.

But there will be only one name on the lips of those who watched this game. It is always genuinely thrilling to watch a young player realise what they are and can be in real time as Amad has this season. It is also, logically when you think about it, a blossoming that often occurs in the very harshest soil.

Amad made his own luck for the first, the ball breaking back into his path off Walker-Peters, who had an excellent first 80 and nightmarish final 10 here, before being instantly recontroled and rifled past Aaron Ramsdale with the weaker right foot.

The second was properly good, a clever volleyed finish from the sort of impeccably weighted clipped pass over a defence that has time to realise they are screwed but no time to act upon that information for which Christian Eriksen has been known for a decade or more now. It was precisely the sort of goal you might see Dele Alli score in 2017.

The third goal was the sort of goal we got used to seeing Southampton concede in 2024 and the less said about it the better. It was harsh on Harwood-Bellis, who had been so good until a sliver of utter woke nonsense crept in to allow Amad to complete his hat-trick. One wonders if his mind was still on the header he’d sent goalwards moments earlier, only to see it ricochet to safety off team-mate Flynn Downes.

That Amad was there to pounce on that error even in that moment, 94 minutes into a game he had already dragged his side back into kicking and screaming, says everything about where he’s at right now.

And for neither the first nor one suspects the final time this season, United were enormously, desperately grateful.

Amad the hat-trick hero, but this star changed the game for United vs Southampton

Amad the hat-trick hero, but this star changed the game for United vs Southampton

Manchester United came back from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at Old Trafford, courtesy of a hat-trick from Amad Diallo. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 7 – United’s best player in the opening 45 minutes. Big double save to deny Tyler Dibling and Mateus Fernandes.

Leny Yoro 3 – Very difficult game against the tricky and rapid Kamaldeen Sulemana. Got skinned a number of times and really struggled.

Matthijs de Ligt 5 – Some decent defensive moments but not nearly authoritative enough at the centre of the three-man defence.

Lisandro Martinez 4 – Unable to build on his last two brilliant performances against Liverpool and Arsenal. Regressed against Southampton.

Amad Diallo 9 – Fantastic work to get the equaliser for United when it looked like the team was headed for defeat. United’s primary source of threat and if the Red Devils were to get anything from the match, it was mostly likely going to come from him. Went on to complete the comeback for United by scoring the winner before completing a sensational hat-trick. What a player!

Manuel Ugarte 4 – He was doing fine until he scored the own goal from a Southampton corner kick.

Kobbie Mainoo 3 – Not good enough tonight. No conviction and was constantly outdone in duels and challenges.

Noussair Mazraoui 3 – Not great at all on the left. Offered next to nothing in attack. No progression whatsoever

Bruno Fernandes 4 – Just not impactful enough.

Alejandro Garnacho 2 – Missed a clear-cut chance in the first half that would have put United in the driving seat. Some poor decision-making in the final third

Rasmus Hojlund 1 – Another hopeless performance. Horrible hold-up play and failed to provide the focal point that United desperately needed. Feels like United are playing with 10 men when he’s on the pitch.

      Substitutes

Antony 2 – Missed an open goal in very bizarre circumstances. Didn’t offer anything different. Waste of a substitution.

Joshua Zirkzee 7 – Registered an assist for Amad’s goal. United looked much better with him on the pitch. Some excellent touches and combinations that helped sustain spells of attack. Undoubtedly changed the game and played a big role in ensuring the Reds clinched all three points. Should be starting ahead of Hojlund going forward.

Toby Collyer 6 – Injected a lot of energy and legs in the middle of the park.

Harry Maguire 5 – On the pitch for a very limited time. Sorely missed tonight.

Christian Eriksen 6 – Beautiful dink for Amad for the winning strike. Class is permanent!

Liverpool set to beat Man Utd to £50m star as Hughes ‘priority’ revealed amid Semenyo snub

Liverpool look set to beat Manchester United and Manchester City to the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth as sporting director Richard Hughes’ ‘priority’ becomes clear.

Kerkez has attracted plenty of attention through his displays under Andoni Iraola this season, with The i Paper claiming the three Premier League giants have ‘already made contact with the player’s representatives’.

Ruben Amorim is desperate for reinforcements at United, particularly on the left of defence with Diogo Dalot having to play out of position on that side amid Luke Shaw’s ongoing fitness problems.

Man City are also interested in Kerkez as they seek an alternative option to Josko Gvardiol, who has struggled at times this term and could also move centrally to play alongside the Hungarian international if he was to make the switch to the Etihad.

READ MORE: Nico Williams to Arsenal and Man City triple swoop among ten moves which can spark title race into life

But that looks unlikely with the report claiming the 21-year-old ‘favours a move to Anfield over the Manchester clubs’.

        The report adds:

‘A link-up with Liverpool director of football Richard Hughes, the man who brought Kerkez to England during his time on the south coast, is understood to play a major part in the Hungary international’s thinking.

‘Bournemouth have no plans to sell in January, despite signing a ready-made left-back replacement in Julio Soler from Argentinian side Lanus already this month, in a deal that could rise to £11.5m.

‘There have been no concrete proposals for Kerkez as yet for either side. There is no pressure to sell from Bournemouth’s point of view but offers in the region of £50m is where they are understood to be willing to do business.’

Kerkez is Hughes’ ‘priority’ but it’s claimed Wolves star Rayan Ait-Nouri is ‘next on Liverpool’s hitlist’.

It’s further claimed that ‘contrary to reports, there is no Bournemouth interest in Liverpool forward Ben Doak at this stage and they will not entertain offers that involve swapping Doak for Antoine Semenyo’.

Kerkez joined Bournemouth for around £15m from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023, and when asked about the full-back’s future in November, Cheeries boss Andoni Iraola claims he “doesn’t pay attention” to the rumours.

He said: “About the other teams (and their interest in Kerkez), I don’t really pay too much attention to these things.

“I don’t know how much truth there is in these rumours.

“Milos has been solid this season, he is more mature and he is seeing the benefits of having the experience of going through a past season. I think it is a new level for him.

“We have to consider he is still very, very young, he has to continue developing like this and also add more things.

Man Utd transfer: Rashford transfer blow as Chelsea offer ‘dream’ Euro giant £65m alternative

Man Utd transfer: Rashford transfer blow as Chelsea offer ‘dream’ Euro giant £65m alternative

Marcus Rashford has been dealt a major blow in his bid to leave Manchester United this month as his ‘dream’ club Barcelona have been offered an alternative by Chelsea.

Rashford wants out of Old Trafford having announced his desire for a “new challenge” last month, and several top European sides have been credited with interest in the United forward.

Premier League trio West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal have all been linked with Rashford, but a move to a Premier League rival has reportedly been blocked by Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, while Juventus, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona are also thought to be keen on the England international.

A report on Wednesday claimed Barcelona are ‘prioritising’ Rashford and that manager Hansi Flick is ‘expecting a response’ from the club’s hierarchy for ‘a definitive answer regarding the signing’.

His permanent exit is unlikely thanks to United’s £50m demand, but Barcelona have as good a chance as any foreign club of securing his loan signing, as long as United are willing to stump up a significant portion of his £300,000-per-week wages.

Flick has ‘endorsed’ the signing of Rashford and Barca will continue to ‘follow his situation very closely’, even if the German boss is yet to receive an answer from his bosses.

It is claimed in the report that Flick ‘likes’ the England international and ‘tried’ to sign him when he was Bayern Munich manager.

Spanish outlet Nacional confirm that Rashford remains the ‘priority’ but claim Chelsea have thrown a spanner in the works by offering Barcelona the services of Christopher Nkunku on a six-month loan.

Bayern Munich are supposedly interested in the former RB Leipzig star, but Chelsea want Mathys Tel included in a swap deal and the Bundesliga side are unwilling to sanction the teenager’s exit or to pay the Blues’ full asking price of £65m for Nkunku.

          The report states:

‘According to sources close to the club, Chelsea, which is going through a renewal process under the direction of Enzo Maresca, does not have Nkunku for the rest of the season. This opens the door to a six-month loan that could fit perfectly with the needs of the team led by Hansi Flick.’

Nkunku’s arrival likely depends on Barcelona finding a suitor for Ansu Fati, and the links with the France international will be a significant blow for Rashford – who sees the Catalans as his ‘dream’ club – and for United, who are more than open to his departure.

Rashford hasn’t played for his boyhood club since December 12, missing their last seven matches.

Asked on Sunday if Rashford has played his last match for the Red Devils, Amorim said: “I don’t know. We will see.

“He is a player for Manchester United. He loves this club but I have to make choices. It is what it is.”

Manchester United are pursuing a move for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, as per reports in Spain.

United’s struggles in the final third have proven to be a serious headache for the new manager Ruben Amorim, who has had to deal with both on and off-the-pitch issues related to his forwards.

Marcus Rashford hasn’t featured for the Red Devils since mid-December owing to concerns over his off-field antics. Alejandro Garnacho was also dropped by Amorim ahead of the Manchester derby last month after the manager was left unimpressed with his work in training.

Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have been underwhelming, to say the least, whenever they have been handed minutes by the Portuguese.

The attacking crisis has led to United being linked with a number of forwards, including Bryan Mbeumo. Now, a very surprising name has been added to United’s supposed wish list.

According to Fichajes, United are emerging as the “main candidates” to sign Nunez, who is nearing the end of his time at Anfield.

The Uruguayan was on United’s radar when he was impressing in Portugal with Benfica. However, Jurgen Klopp lured him to Merseyside in 2022.

Under the new manager Arne Slot, the 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order, managing just seven Premier League starts this season.

The Spanish outlet claim that the Mancunians see him as an opportunity to reinforce their attack.

His physicality and ability to run in behind the backline is supposedly considered ideal for Amorim’s setup, which demands strength and speed from its number nine.

The report adds that Nunez “could be on the verge of being the protagonist of one of the most controversial and significant signings in recent times in English football.”

Considering the last player to transfer between Liverpool and Manchester United was Phil Chisnall in 1964, Nunez swapping Anfield for Old Trafford would undoubtedly be “controversial”. However, at this point, it is best to take the claim with a pinch of salt.

Confirmed United XI vs Southampton: Leny Yoro and Alejandro Garnacho start

Ruben Amorim has made several changes to his starting lineup for tonight’s match against Southampton at Old Trafford.

Andre Onana returns in goal after Altay Bayindir’s heroics against Arsenal on Sunday.

The back three comprises Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez.

De Ligt will probably play in the central role, with Yoro right and Martinez left.

With Diogo Dalot suspended, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are the wing backs.

Amorim has selected Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo again in central midfield.

Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes are the front three.

On the subs’ bench are Bayindir, Tyrell Malacia, Harry Maguire, Godwill Kukonki, Toby Collyer, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Joshua Zirkzee.

Maguire is probably being rested after having been ill last week. He was also hobbling toward the end of Sunday’s match against Arsenal.

Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount are all still injured.

Marcus Rashford has once again been omitted from the squad despite being fit.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 8pm GMT.

Borussia Dortmund have stepped up their interest in Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, according to reports in Germany.

Rashford is available for transfer after falling out of favour under new Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim.

He has not played in any of the Red Devils’ last seven matches, with interest coming from several European clubs.

Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Napoli, Juventus, Barcelona and AS Monaco have all been linked with the England international, who Man Utd reportedly want £50million for.

Rashford’s asking price on top of his £325,000-a-week wages make him difficult to attain but the Premier League club remain optimistic he will leave in the January transfer window, even if it is on loan.

Multiple reports on Thursday claim German giants Dortmund have stepped up their interest in Rashford and could make a bid to sign him on loan in the coming days.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg says Die Schwarzgelben sporting director Sebastian Kehl and head coach Nuri Sahin are ‘pushing’ to land the 27-year-old.

Plettenberg claims ‘new talks have taken place’ but Italian giants Milan ‘are also very concrete in their interest’.

The transfer expert wrote on X: ‘Sebastian Kehl and Nuri Sahin are now pushing to sign Marcus Rashford!

‘New talks have taken place, with Borussia Dortmund aiming to secure him on loan.

‘The decision to pursue Rashford was made after Friday’s defeat, as exclusively revealed.

‘However, AC Milan are also very concrete in their interest and are actively trying to secure a deal themselves.’

German outlet BILD claimed on Thursday that Dortmund are considering signing Rashford from Man Utd permanently.

It is said that the Bundesliga side ‘urgently’ need to sign players in the winter transfer window having lost their last two matches, most recently falling 4-2 to relegation-threatened Holsten Kiel.

Their most recent defeat has sparked a desire to invest after selling Donyell Malen to Aston Villa for 30 million euros and Rashford is a top target.

Indeed, their ‘secret transfer plans’ are revealed by BILD, who claims ‘there is a Rashford turnaround’, with ‘the coming transfer days at BVB’ expected to be ‘hot’.

Apart from first-team departures, Manchester United are also working on loan exits for multiple academy wonderkids including quite a few members of the club’s treble-winning U18 side.

One of them is Ethan Williams, who had scored 17 goals and registered nine assists for the U18 and U21s last season, and has carried that devastating form into the new season as well.

The 19-year-old has four goals and two assists in nine games, including three goals in four games in the UEFA Youth League and the Red Devils are eager for the talented winger to experience competitive first-team football.

As previously relayed by The Peoples Person, there was a lot of interest from League One clubs including Stockport County and Leyton Orient but Gloucestershire Live have provided an update on Williams’ short-term future.

                  Williams to Cheltanham

They have revealed that the United wonderkid is set to join League Two outfit Cheltenham Town with the Robins providing the ideal landing spot for the youngster.

“Cheltenham Town are set to sign winger Ethan Williams on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season.

“The 19-year-old is highly regarded as his parent club, helping the Red Devils’ Under-18s win a treble last term, scoring 17 goals and providing nine assists.

“He has continued his fine form during the first half of this season, sparking interest from League One clubs including Stockport County and Leyton Orient, but United have opted to send him to League Two Cheltenham.”

                  Can he catch Amorim’s eye?

Williams will be eager to do well at Cheltenham as he hopes to catch Ruben Amorim’s eye with the left-wing spot potentially up for grabs now that Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho both have been linked with exits.

The former Rochdale starlet was involved in pre-season last summer, back when Erik ten Hag was in charge, but could not force his way into the Dutchman’s plans.

This will not be the first senior exposure for the two-footed attacker who had spent time training with INEOS-owned FC Lausanne back in October.

Interestingly, Williams has also played as a left wingback for the academy and with Amorim desperate for reinforcements in that position, a positive loan could elevate his chances of breaking through come next summer.

Superstar’s agent set to meet United as contract talks break down again, City, Liverpool also in the fray – report

Manchester United emerged victorious in their FA Cup third-round tie against Arsenal by the skin of their teeth, winning 5-3 on penalties despite playing for over an hour with 10 men.

Diogo Dalot saw a second yellow early in the second half and his mistake almost cost his team but the players showed immense bravery to book a place in Round 4.

Ruben Amorim has explained that his compatriot is more suited to the right flank than the left wing but has been forced to play him there due to Luke Shaw’s injury and Tyrell Malacia’s struggles since his return.

The head coach would prefer to strengthen out wide this January with multiple names linked with a move, among those being Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich.

Davies-Bayern contract talks have broken down again

The Canadian’s contract with the Bavarian giants ends in 2025 and Bayern are desperate to try and tie him down on a new long-term deal.

However, there have been lots of contrasting reports regarding those talks with some saying that the 24-year-old is likely to continue in Bavaria while others have said the full-back wants to leave.

Bild journalist Christian Falk has now claimed that contract talks have broken down and the player’s agent Nick Househ is eager to find Davies a lucrative next move.

The agent has planned discussions in the coming days with not only the Red Devils but also Real Madrid and fierce rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

“Our Story: Alphonso Davies’ agent will leave Munich tomorrow. There’s still no agreement over a new deal with
                    FC Bayern.

Meeting with potential suitors on the cards

“The Agent Nick Househ wants to make meetings with Real Madrid, FC Liverpool, Manchester City and United,” Falk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

If this report is true, in the end it is likely to boil down to which club offers the defender the highest wages as well as the largest commission to the agent.

The Canada international was currently earning €216,346 gross per week (via capology) and given the club’s PSR concerns, the 20-time English league champions are unlikely to go above €300,000 gross per week, which could hamper the move.

Davies’ attacking qualities makes him the standout wingback target for Amorim but whether INEOS can deliver remains to be seen. If the Bundesliga star ends up joining a domestic rival, it would be a huge blow for United.
