Ruben Amorim gives his verdict on Andre Onana’s form after latest howler

Manchester United suffered their fourth defeat in their last five home games as Brighton left Old Trafford with a comfortable 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

Bruno Fernandes cancelled out Yankuba Minteh’s early opener before the outstanding Kaoru Mitoma restored The Seagull’s lead on the hour mark.

United huffed and puffed but were dead and buried with 15 minutes left on the clock after Georginio Rutter hopped off the bench to capitalise on a shocking mistake by Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international failed to deal with Yasin Ayari’s tepid low cross, spilling the ball to Rutter who made no mistake, slamming the ball into an empty net and condemning United to another dark day in front of home support.

As reported by The Mirror, Ruben Amorim was left fuming after the game and gave his verdict on Onana’s turbulent form this season.

“It’s like the team, ups and downs. Really up, sometimes, and really low downs. We have to maintain the focus during all the game to try to win. That is the only way we can turn things around,” he said.

Onana’s howler comes off the back of a a couple of fine stops in the comeback win against Southampton, keeping United in a game they could have been dead and buried in before Amad Diallo’s inspired late intervention.

The two outings rather sum up Onana’s time at Old Trafford which has been littered with as many goal-costing mistakes as good moments.

It looked as though the 28-year-old had recovered from his rocky start in Manchester that saw a raft of early, costly errors lead to question marks over his suitability for the role.

However, another poor display has reared further conversations on whether Onana is truly good enough to keep goal for United in the long term.

What may grant the ‘keeper a stay of execution is that the team are in dire need of outfield reinforcements before they are in a position to replace Onana with someone of the required level.

However, should the former Ajax man not see his form improve in the coming weeks, Bayindir will no doubt be chomping at the bit to prove his worth with an extended run in the first team.

Amorim will be hoping his stopper can shake off the mistake as quickly as possible with games coming thick and fast in the coming weeks.

United are rooted in the bottom half of the Premier League table and in desperate need of an upturn in fortunes to salvage something from a season that has been nothing short of a disaster up until now.

Postecoglou gone and Van Nistelrooy might follow with Amorim drowning in Man Utd mess too

Bournemouth, David Moyes and Lucas Digne are living the life. But Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ange Postecoglou are in trouble with Ruben Amorim not far behind.

      Bournemouth fans
In general, of course, supporting as they do a paragon of sustainable, scalable and achievable Premier League brilliance who refused to stay in their lane and can still remember the dread fear of falling out of the Football League entirely. But more specifically those who decided a 12-hour round trip in the middle of winter to visit the home of the country’s form team was in any way a sensible use of their time.

Much like when the club’s hierarchy decided to replace Gary O’Neil with Andoni Iraola, it was a foolhardy, naive and potentially ruinous decision in which the possible reward far outweighed and entirely justified the risk.

And as seems so often to be the case with the Cherries, they absolutely nailed it. The stunningly well-worked early opener. The conceptually perfect high-pressing second. The nervous, anxious lead. The euphoric stoppage-time goals. The academy product debut with the result secured. Playing and battering Newcastle at their own game. Those are memories for life.

It remains an egregious example of the utterly ludicrous scheduling which perennially takes fans for granted but they made the best of it and should be envied for living the knackered dream.

      Andoni Iraola
Ten first-team absentees, half of whom were bought this season including their club-record signing, and a bench with almost as many double-barrelled surnames (four) as prior outfield Premier League appearances (ten).

With Lewis Cook at right-back in a staggeringly young defence, Dango Ouattara used as an unconventional centre-forward and David Brooks and Tyler Adams maximising opportunities given to them in unrelentingly difficult circumstances, Iraola is establishing himself as one of the best coaches in the division.

      David Moyes
The first Everton manager since David Moyes to beat Tottenham at home in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche’s last decision at Goodison Park was his best. It is thought that he told the hierarchy he had essentially lost the dressing-room and was no longer the best person for the role.

Moyes might not be either but he benefits from that past connection at a time Everton need to re-establish something vaguely resembling an identity beyond ‘low block and punt it to Iliman’.

Ndiaye did conjure his usual moment of inspiration but it was part of a wider performance rather than the silver lining to the darkest of clouds. The difference in performance of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jesper Lindstrom were particularly stark.

While these players should and will not shirk responsibility for the failures of the previous reign, this was compelling proof they can make things work under Moyes.

That seemed true for a time under Dyche, whose first month in charge was underpinned by inspiring home victories he struggled to build on. It soon became an awkward fit of club, fanbase and manager. But Moyes patrolling the dugout as Everton swept aside a purported member of the elite felt just right.

      Brighton
Finally they have managed to stitch together their customary victories over Manchester United to register a Premier League Double over them.

The Seagulls seem to win as often at Old Trafford as Manchester United do and few sides have their number quite as emphatically. It is precisely how meetings between one of the best and one of the worst-run clubs in the country should go.

Fabian Hurzeler deserves credit for steering his side out of a sticky patch of eight games without a win to fashion a six-game unbeaten run which has them back in European contention. And while the concept is barely hanging on by a thread, no team has more points against the Big Six this season than Brighton (14).

      Harvey Elliott
The spotlight had to fall on Darwin Nunez but the other cameo from a player who might consider himself underused this season was arguably just as influential.

Jurgen Klopp admitted his final season “regret” that Elliott “didn’t play often enough” but the fresh start afforded by Arne Slot soon soured after starting the campaign out of the side before fracturing his foot.

The long lay-off put Elliott at an obvious disadvantage when trying to establish himself as a trustable starter but there is only so much that can be done in nine Premier and Champions League cameos, the longest of which has totalled 16 minutes.

Elliott will not wish to box himself in as a phenomenal substitute option but the reputation he developed under Klopp might be his short-term future role for Slot, in which case playing a crucial role in both goals – with movement, passes and runs which few others in the squad can replicate – is a welcome step forward.

The manager tried to siphon off some of the post-match Nunez media focus to shift to Elliott, whose attitude has been exemplary. It undoubtedly helps being part of a trophy-chasing juggernaut but other 21-year-olds in his position would be playing up to the transfer speculation instead of seeking out the manager for specific advice on how to break into the team and speaking with brutal honesty about where he personally feels he must improve.

      Nuno Espirito Santo
Maybe the perfect win for a manager in his position: a resounding lead to show the gulf between what Nottingham Forest were and now are, before a mild panic to show how transient this brilliance could be.

Nuno will take the three points but also an opportunity to remind his players of the standards and how they have to be met over 90 minutes as opposed to 60.

As he said: “You can never ever underestimate it and think the game is over. It was a warning for everybody to realise this league is very tough.” The real message is that Ola Aina can’t be expected to clear one off the line every match.

      Crystal Palace
It was a ropey summer followed by what Oliver Glasner called “the worst start in the Premier League history of Crystal Palace” but patience has paid off. The Eagles are as close to the Champions League qualification places as they are the bottom three in terms of points and have far more reason to look up than down.

In 13 games since the November international break, Palace have admittedly rather shamefully only lost to Arsenal and continued their particularly sparking away form. No Premier League side has conceded fewer goals on the road this season and the signing of Romain Esse only reinforces their identity as the place to be for the best young Football League players.

      Manchester City
Having been thrashed 4-0 by Tottenham in their first game after Pep Guardiola extended his contract, Manchester City might have feared just what equally relegation-threatened Ipswich would do to them in the aftermath of Erling Haaland’s ridiculous new deal.

The champions have thrown enough hopeful solutions at this troubled season and might finally have stumbled upon the best of all, although handing out decade-long contracts does not seem particularly sustainable.

And while the standard of opponent must be taken into account, Manchester City trouncing teams by eight and six goals before making a £60m forward signing does suggest they are at least on the right track again.

      Sander Berge
Not enough is really made of how Fulham have so seamlessly absorbed the two biggest sales in their entire history while continuing to improve.

Marco Silva replaced the goals of Aleksandar Mitrovic by sharing the burden so equally between Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz that when one is in incredible form, the other must forget how to kick a ball.

So it should be no surprise that his solution to losing Joao Palhinha was to sign twice-relegated Berge from the Championship for about half the price and turn him into a tackling machine with almost flawless pass accuracy.

Fulham have lost just two of the 11 Premier League matches the Norwegian has started this season – either side of the October international break to Manchester City and Aston Villa. That Leicester game was his first appearance since December 22 because of injury and he played the full 90 minutes. The Cottagers have a new midfield machine to worship.

      Lucas Digne
Silva always was a visionary. It was not exactly common consensus in April 2019 that Digne is better than Andy Robertson but perhaps the Portuguese simply expressed his views six years too early.

While the Liverpool full-back is on the decline, Digne remains unshiftable at 31. Having seen off the challenge of Alex Moreno it was instructive that Unai Emery’s first unenforced changed against Arsenal was to bring on his trusted lieutenant in place of Ian Maatsen.

Digne shut down the threat on the left with five tackles and four clearances in 45 minutes, as well as a sumptuous assist for the first goal. One of Villa’s most quietly important players was almost sold in the last two summers.

And fair play to Matty Alexander-Arnold-Cash for completing the Liverpool full-back comparison by defending poorly before putting in a stunning ball for the equaliser.

      Premier League losers

      Leicester and Ruud van Nistelrooy
That line from Rob Tanner of The Athletic in explaining why Leicester appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy still sticks out: ‘They think he can unite the club and fanbase, lift the players and restore a feel-good factor.’

If that was the aim, act quicker on Steve Cooper and bring in Claudio Ranieri for the final leg of his retirement tour. It is worth a reminder that the Foxes were 16th when they decided to change managers – all was far from lost – but if their desire was to simply generate some positivity then this has been even more of an unmitigated failure than any attempt to avoid relegation or spend money sensibly.

The fans are jeering at the manager’s substitutions, calling for the director of football to leave and even turning on the owner and board. It is an irretrievably toxic situation which could become cataclysmic upon a relegation they seem powerless to avoid.

It is not just that the Van Nistelrooy honeymoon is over; an annulment already feels inevitable. This is such a laughably poor fit of forward-foot manager and Championship-level squad that it is unthinkable quite how Leicester could have played this any worse. They needed a firefighter – having sacked one of the precious few willing to inherit this mess – but instead just closed their eyes and poured petrol everywhere.

Dean Smith was an atrocious choice of parachutist in their last top-flight campaign but at least there was some logic behind that decision. He wasn’t picked just because he had already beaten them twice that season for a start, and would probably make more sense than trusting Van Nistelrooy now.

      Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou
‘Spurs remain intent on trying to help Postecoglou rather then removing him from his position’ is the claim from Alasdair Gold and it might just be the most depressing start to a sentence one could wish to read when coming towards the end of the January transfer window.

When their ‘intent on trying to help’ Postecoglou has thus far resulted in the signing of a young, potentially excellent keeper who has already been reduced to picking the ball out of his net thrice at Goodison Park, and one of the few teenagers deemed too callow not to chuck on somewhere, it does not bode particularly well.

And at this stage it’s starting to seem like ‘removing’ Postecoglou from all of this would be a kindness. He speaks well about taking “responsibility” and has resisted overplaying the transfer card like so many of his predecessors but ultimately it just feels beyond him to salvage anything from the wreckage.

The injury crisis is largely out of his hands but the change in system was catastrophic and he is long enough in the tooth to know whose shoulders that falls on.

He is also experienced enough to know that having Tottenham in 15th with as many Premier League losses as last season makes another defeat a “familiar story” but pressure does funny things to people and no-one has attracted quite as much. The best thing Spurs could do to ‘help’ is take it off him.

      Manchester United and Ruben Amorim
The honesty and sincerity is refreshing. It must be tempting and would be fair for Amorim to essentially wash his hands of the rest of this season for it is not his team, but it really is his problem.

The Portuguese is instead adamant that this is a collective failure in which he is included, a responsibility shared from boardroom to pitch and everywhere in between.

These miserable first few months are supposed to be the prelude to a stratospheric rise back to where Manchester United belong, the opening paragraphs to an Athletic long read on the 2027/28 champions. This is the short-term pain they must endure for long-term gain, a necessary learning curve to separate wheat from considerable chaff in this squad and emerge for the better.

But what if it doesn’t work? What if Amorim can’t turn this around and Manchester United’s incompetence is simply too powerful to overhaul? What if tearing it all down to try and build back up again only reveals more foundational problems?

“We are being maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United” must be a deliberate ploy to weed out the players who are not up for the fight of forcing momentum back uphill. But they are also perfect for a managerial obituary when the revival never comes and the sack is made inevitable.

There is a balance to strike between Erik ten Hag blaming injuries or refereeing decisions against Arsenal nine months ago and Amorim ritualistically shaming everyone in public after each defeat.

Manchester United already made a difficult job harder by stupidly insisting it was now or never for Amorim, who played his own hand foolishly by taking the bait. Quite what there is to gain from the figurehead of this club routinely telling everyone how shit he, they and this all is is unknown.

      That Arsenal bench
They should never have needed the input but the liability that is Thomas Partey had to make his presence known, so Arsenal had to look to their bench for inspiration against Aston Villa.

Mikel Arteta was greeted with the depressing contents of a bare cupboard and fridge after putting off the big food shop, except in this instance there seems to be no intention to even nip out and fetch something just for tea.

It was a miserable Raheem Sterling cameo, nine minutes plus stoppage-time of ambling down blocked paths culminating in an embarrassing dribble which got him booked. But if Arsenal did not act the instant Bukayo Saka felt something go in his hamstring before Christmas then a) it seems unlikely they will do anything in January now, and b) it would be far too late in any case.

      Arsenal fans
Not all of them, of course, just the most painfully online contingent who immediately cried conspiracy and produced slowed-down footage of the disallowed goal which did nothing other than prove just how thoroughly Mikel Merino’s shot struck Kai Havertz’s hand.

Sky Sports and Match of the Day should probably know better than to play up to it and stoke the fires but when an unhealthy proportion of the fanbase can instinctively tell you where a referee is from and who they support, the battle is already both lost and pointless.

      West Ham
The ease with which Graham Potter added a centre-half to a shopping list which perpetually contains a shiny new centre-forward was alarming.

West Ham recouped £9.5m for Thilo Kehrer, Nayef Aguerd, Kurt Zouma, Ben Johnson and Angelo Ogbonna this summer, trading them for theoretical upgrades in Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the potential cost of £90m. And they might have become worse defensively.

The Todibo injury which has necessitated a look at centre-half “options” available to the Hammers has not helped. But Konstantinos Mavropanos has been shudderingly poor in the 18 months since he joined and Kilman has not brought the sort of leadership and authority to the defence as his price tag suggested he should.

He does do a sublime Roger Johnson against Yaya Toure impression, mind.

      Newcastle
Eddie Howe said “it was difficult to change the team when we had just won nine in a row” and any counter-argument could only possibly be made in hindsight; there were few complaints when the starting line-ups were announced.

But really it’s difficult to change the team because scratching below the surface at Newcastle is equivalent to scraping the bottom of the barrel. Fabian Schar, Joe Willock, Kieran Trippier and Will Osula are not substitutes designed to turn Premier League games around in big 2025 yet that is the hand Howe has been dealt and he has no choice but to play it.

There will be no further help in January and the transfer outlook in the summer does not sound particularly promising. Newcastle are on the brink of a special season but this was a timely reminder that everything seems to be built on quicksand.

      Brentford
The good news is that Nottingham Forest weathered a Liverpool storm before eventually succumbing to a Darwin Nunez stoppage-time winner at home in the second half of last season, so Thomas Frank should gear up for next campaign’s title challenge.

The bad news is facing 37 shots and yeah, that’s not really ideal.

      Southampton
The Derby-o-meter has them a point behind at the same stage of their respective seasons. Make no mistake, we are witnessing something historically bad. An injury to Tyler Dibling really does not help the entirely resigned mood.

      Ipswich
Abel Xavier scored when Ipswich last conceded six goals in a game at Portman Road so this has to be seen as progress.

Barcelona’s attempts to sign Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford are being held up by a player refusing to leave with Borussia Dortmund set to take advantage, according to reports.

The England international was left out of Ruben Amorim’s squad for their 2-1 win over Man City in the Manchester Derby last month with Rashford only appearing in one matchday squad since.

Rashford was again omitted in the Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday at Old Trafford, as expected, and now looks set to leave Man Utd before the end of the January transfer window.

Speaking in an interview with Henry Winter the day after the Manchester Derby, Rashford said: “For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.

“When I leave it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings’. You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That’s me as a person.

“If I know that a situation is already bad I’m not going to make it worse. I’ve seen how other players have left in the past and I don’t want to be that person. When I leave I’ll make a statement and it will be from me.”

Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund are the two main clubs being linked with a move for Rashford as the end of the window approaches and Man Utd ruling out his departure to a Premier League rival.

Spanish publication Sport now claim that Barcelona has a ‘serious competitor’ in Dortmund for Rashford and the Catalan giants ‘cannot afford to rest on their hands in their attempt to sign’ the Man Utd forward.

It is understood that Barcelona ‘do not want to rush and the first intention is to close the exit of Ansu Fati so that Rashford can take his place in the team, but as long as the striker does not accept the exit, the arrival of a name that Hansi Flick likes very much becomes complicated’.

Dortmund believe Rashford ‘would be an ideal player to revive the project’ and the Bundesliga giants could move for the England international if Erik ten Hag takes over as manager this week.

The report adds that: ‘Despite having also had problems with him, he [Ten Hag] believes that his behaviour is correctable and would have a great impact on the rest of the group in order to get their heads back on track.’

Sport continues: ‘It all depends on whether Rashford wants to wait for FC Barcelona until February 3 , when the winter transfer window closes, or opts for Dortmund this week.’

The Daily Telegraph have their own update on Rashford on Monday, they write: ‘United will also step up their efforts this week to find a loan move for Marcus Rashford with sources in Germany suggesting that Borussia Dortmund are hopeful of signing him with French club Monaco are believed to be their closest rivals.’

While further reports in Spain claim that Barcelona forward Fati ‘refuses to leave’ with their potential move for Rashford ‘at a standstill’ and the ‘door closing’ on a deal for the Man Utd star.

Huge development as Serie A club sets sights on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee – report

AC Milan appear to have identified Manchester United duo Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as their next transfer targets.

Formerly, the Italian club set its sights on Marcus Rashford for a loan move, with the club reportedly entering advanced talks with the player over a January transfer.

It was later reported that Rashford’s camp did not respond to Milan’s approach, instead favouring a move to FC Barcelona.

It appears as if Milan has not been discouraged by this setback, however, with the club setting its sights on two other Man United forwards.

“Milan continue to be in the market for a forward and sources have said that the club are exploring the possibility of signing one of João Félix, Zirkzee or Højlund,” ESPN reported today.

“Sources have said that the former Benfica and Barcelona forward [João Félix] is Milan’s favoured option after failing to sign Rashford, but there is also interest in Zirkzee and Højlund due to United’s readiness to do deals this month in an effort to bolster coach Ruben Amorim’s squad,” the report continued.

“Sources have said that United would need to sign another forward before allowing either Zirkzee or Højlund to leave on loan, but with Juventus also interested in the pair, the prospect of one of the young strikers leaving Old Trafford this month is realistic, even if Rashford finds a new club,” the article concluded.

Hojlund has struggled to find his form this season, losing his place in the starting 11 to Joshua Zirkzee when United lost 3-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday.

Even after coming on as a substitute in yesterday’s defeat, Hojlund has scored just two goals in 17 Premier League appearances.

Zirkzee has also struggled in front of goal, with just three goals and one assist in 22 league matches.

Poor performances aside, Hojlund and Zirkzee remain the only two strikers at the disposal of United manager Ruben Amorim. This makes it imperative for United to sign another striker should they decide to allow one of these two players to depart for Milan.

With United targeting the likes of Victor Osimhen, it appears that the club is looking to bolster its firepower up front.

United will surely look to act fast in the January transfer market should Zirkzee or Hojlund feel inclined to secure a move to Milan.

Man Utd are actually ‘worst team in the world’ if you are desperate for clicks

When the actual Manchester United manager describes his team as “the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United” then you absolutely do not need to twist those quotes; you just say thank you very much and move on.

Every single national newspaper barring the Daily Mirror – who led on Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou – splashed that story across their back pages on Monday morning.

But what’s better than the actual Manchester United manager denigrating his own team? According to MailOnline, it’s this:

‘Man United are ‘WORSE’ under Ruben Amorim than they were with Erik ten Hag says Alan Shearer – as the pundit explains what the squad ‘can’t do”

Why the actual f*** are you capitalising the word ‘WORSE’ as if it were a powerful revelation when these are actual facts?

Manchester United picked up 11 points from Erik ten Hag’s nine Premier League games in charge this season; they have picked up 11 points from Ruben Amorim’s 11 Premier League games in charge this season. That is worse. Not ‘WORSE’.

Amorim does not need Alan Shearer to tell him these home truths and neither do Manchester United fans or players; he made that clear with his own very powerful quotes.

‘Alan Shearer weighed in on Man United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim after the Red Devils suffered an embarrassing 3-1 home defeat by Brighton on Sunday.

‘The Newcastle legend argued that they are worse under the Portuguese boss than they were with Erik ten Hag, who was given the boot in October as United languished 14th place in the Premier League table.’

He didn’t have to ‘argue’ anything; it is objectively true.

And as for ‘explaining’ what the Manchester United squad ‘can’t do’, here is that insight in full: “They can’t play the way he wants to play. The players just can’t do it.”

That’s not an ‘explanation’ by any stretch of even limited imagination. Our beef is not with Alan Shearer – he is not claiming to be a managerial expert; he can’t after this – but a media which makes his anodyne words somehow the most important story in football.

But when a manager gives you such a perfect quote for a perfect headline, sometimes the challenge can be to take things further, which is how we stumbled upon this headline on Google from The Independent:

‘Ruben Amorim was wrong – Man Utd are the worst team in the world’

Now when you click through the headline swiftly changes to ‘Ruben Amorim was wrong – but pound for pound, Manchester United are the worst team in the world’, which is a much, much fairer representation of what was written by Senior Football Correspondent Richard Jolly, formerly and briefly of this parish.

The Independent have served the shorter headline to Google to generate clicks – and in this case, it worked – while knowing full well it’s a right load of bollocks. There’s a reason why that version appears nowhere on their website.

United are not even the worst team in the Premier League, never mind the whole world, and actually Jolly gives Amorim a history lesson on Manchester United’s various relegations and failures. What he does write is this:

‘Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, euro for euro, United are arguably the worst team in the world.’

Fair. They cost a shedload of money and they are currently 13th in the Premier League table.

You know what they’re not? The ‘worst team in the world’. Nobody sane would say that. Nobody sane would write that. Makes a great headline for Google, mind.

Over at the Mirror, they claim that the defeat to Brighton meant that ‘Ruben Amorim discovers FOUR things he must immediately fix to solve Man Utd crisis’.

We very much like the idea that Amorim was labouring under the misapprehension that his lower-mid-table Manchester United side was actually fine until he ‘discovered’ there were four issues.

It turns out he has ‘discovered’ (some would say a little late) that 1) he probably needs a new left wing-back because he doesn’t actually have a functioning one. So there’s that. Thankfully they are in the middle of buying one.

At 2), it turns out that he must ‘immediately fix’ the fact that he must ‘stick to his guns’. Sounds like a philosophical nightmare.

At 3) he must ‘immediately fix’ that Manchester United are over-reliant on Bruno Fernandes for creativity. It absolutely sounds like something he can sort by Thursday.

And finally, he must ‘immediately fix’ the fact that Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are low on confidence, using ‘whatever magic he has’. Oh he has ‘magic’? Shame he has only just ‘discovered’ he might need to use it.

Antonio Conte has already spoken with fan-favourite United star over sensational January transfer – report

Napoli are making significant strides in their pursuit of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The 20-year-old Argentine has emerged as a prime target for the Serie A giants in the current winter transfer window.

The Naples-based club has reportedly tabled an offer of €50 million, but United are holding out for a figure closer to £60 million (€70 million).

Due to the constraints of Financial Fair Play, United are eager to maximise profits from Garnacho.

Napoli could increase their offer to €60 million, though they remain firm on not exceeding this valuation.

Garnacho, who has shown glimpses of brilliance despite limited playing time this season, is reportedly intrigued by the move.

Garnacho has emerged as a fan-favourite ever since he became a regular in the first team. He does have the X-factor to create something out of nothing.

However, his lack of technical prowess hinders him from putting in consistent performances week in and week out.

Corriere dello Sport claim that the Argentine has already had a conversation with Napoli manager Antonio Conte.

Talks between Napoli sporting director Mauro Manna and United are expected to intensify, with meetings scheduled within the next 48 hours

Their interest is not without competition.

Chelsea have also expressed a desire to sign Garnacho but are hampered by the need to offload players before making significant acquisitions.

Should Napoli fail to land the United star, they have identified Bologna’s Dan Ndoye, 24, and Lazio’s Mattia Zaccagni, 29, as potential alternatives. Zaccagni, however, has publicly stated his preference to remain in Rome.

“You can’t do that”: Ruben Amorim told his astonishing outburst after shocking Brighton defeat was unacceptable

Manchester United’s concerning form under new head coach Ruben Amorim continued this weekend as Brighton dismantled another nervy home performance at Old Trafford.

The 3-1 reverse was Brighton’s third win in a row at the Theatre of Dreams and left Amorim with much to ponder once more.

Having watched his side be second best for the majority of the 90 minutes, Amorim did not hold back in his assessment of where he believes United are currently at.

The former Sporting boss said “we are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United” after the game, in a statement which would have sent shockwaves through the dressing room.

As reported by the Metro, Liverpool legend – now pundit – Steve Nicol slammed Amorim for his outburst and feels the Portuguese coach should have held back in his reaction.

Speaking on ESPN, Nichol was shocked with the statement and feels it could have a negative impact on Amorim’s fragile players.

“You can’t say that. I’m shaking my head. You can’t say that. For him to come out and say that, you just can’t do it.

“I don’t know what he thinks the reaction from the players is going to be after that. You just can’t say it,” said Nicol.

The European Cup winner added “sometimes you just need to lie” when dealing with the media, or risk damaging morale even further.

United are clearly underperforming in all metrics since the arrival of the 39-year-old with the new system looking too much for majority of the squad to deal with.

The team have looked particularly uncomfortable at Old Trafford and have lost four of their last five games in front of home support.

Signs of life seemed to be appearing after solid showings at Anfield and the Emirates Stadium against Liverpool and Arsenal, respectively, but United now seem to be back to square one after two sub-par home performances.

Amorim doesn’t have to wait long to see how his players react to him damming assessment of their form, with Rangers travelling to Manchester in a crunch Europa League clash on Thursday.

Man Utd tipped to sign Saudi Pro League striker after expert reveals what he’s ‘heard’

Man Utd have been tipped to sign former Brentford striker Ivan Toney from the Saudi Pro League by transfer expert Ben Jacobs.

The Red Devils have had a season to forget in the Premier League this term with a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton seeing Ruben Amorim’s side remain in 13th place in the table.

Amorim has won just three of his first 11 Premier League matches in charge with Man Utd not improving in terms of league placing since the Portuguese head coach replaced Erik ten Hag in November.

Two promising performances against Liverpool and Arsenal earlier this month gave fans hope that things might be turning around under Amorim but their displays against Southampton – which they won 3-1 – and Brighton have deflated the supporters’ enthusiasm.

Only five Premier League sides have scored fewer goals than Man Utd this season with the Red Devils scoring just 27 times in 22 matches.

That has highlighted the need for a new striker with Marcus Rashford – who has openly admitted he’s ready to leave Old Trafford, summer signing Joshua Zirkzee and young striker Rasmus Hojlund not providing enough goals.

And now Man Utd have been linked with moves for numerous forwards as the Red Devils look to help provide Amorim with the tools he needs to turn around results at Old Trafford.

Toney, who was linked to Man Utd before he left Brentford, has scored nine goals in 19 matches in all competitions for Saudi Pro League Al-Ahli since joining in the summer and former CBS Sports journalist Jacobs reckons a move to Old Trafford could be on the cards.

Jacobs told The Stretford Paddock: “I would still just keep, in the back pocket if you like, an eye on Ivan Toney.

“That’s because we know that Manchester United have looked [at him] in the past. There’s nothing to suggest yet that Toney’s chapter in Saudi is going to come to an end, and I certainly wouldn’t want to fuel belief that Manchester United are active on it yet.

“But I hear from a lot of sources that come the summer or maybe even January 2026 that the Toney situation is going to be one to watch.”

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara insists Man Utd should replace wantaway Rashford with Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport: “Marcus Rashford needs to leave Manchester United. I think his time is up at the club. If they can, they should bring in Viktor Gyokeres to replace him – he could be a great player for them. I think they also need to sign a box-to-box midfielder – someone with an engine who can contribute in both halves.

“Although they’ve begun to show signs of a good side, I still think they need reinforcements; they need to recruit players who suit the system Ruben Amorim wants to play. The problem with Gyokeres now is that every club in Europe wants him, and if you put yourself in his position, would you rather move to a club like Bayern Munich, or Man United where there’s no guarantee you’ll win trophies?

“It’ll definitely help that he’s played under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, but whether that’s enough to convince him to move to United, I’m not sure.”

“Dialogue progressing”: United closing in on sensational Serie A left wing back – David Ornstein

Manchester United are in talks with Serie A outfit Lecce over the signing of defender Patrick Dorgu, reports the reliable David Ornstein.

It’s well-known that United are on the hunt for a left-sided full-back, who is capable of slotting into Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.

United’s need for such a player has also been made more urgent by Luke Shaw’s fitness struggles and speculation over Tyrell Malacia’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

Shaw remains sidelined with a fresh issue he picked up in early December while United are believed to have told Malacia that he is free to leave this month.

The Red Devils have been linked to several targets including Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Alvaro Fernandez (Benfica) and of course, Dorgu.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Dorgu would find it difficult to turn down a move to United despite Lecce’s technical director stating that he would not be sold during the ongoing winter transfer window.

Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic has revealed that United have kickstarted talks with Lecce to try and get a deal for Dorgu over the line.

According to Ornstein, “Manchester United are in talks to sign left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.”

“Discussions have begun over the 20-year-old as United line up options ahead of making decisions on ins and outs this month.”

“Nothing is yet agreed but head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his new side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.”

Since joining Lecce in 2022, Dorgu has made 43 first-team appearances for the side.

So far this term, the 20-year-old has notched three goals and one assist in 20 Serie A matches.

“Here we go”: Fabrizio Romano confirms agreement has been struck for Antony to join Real Betis on loan :fire: 1

Manchester United winger Antony is poised to leave the club and join Real Betis on loan for the remainder of the season, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

Antony has failed to come anywhere near justifying his status as the second-most-expensive player in United’s history. He cost the Red Devils a whooping £86m when he joined them in the summer of 2022 from Ajax, as Erik ten Hag’s marquee signing.

He has since scored 12 goals, three of which came in his first three Premier League games.

Antony has managed just one top-flight goal since April 2023. His playing opportunities under Erik ten Hag dwindled and he has failed to break into Ruben Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford.

Indeed, the Brazilian has yet to start a Premier League match under the Portuguese coach so far this term.

It recently emerged that Betis were close to reaching an agreement with United over Antony’s loan transfer to the Spanish outfit.

Manuel Pellegrini is believed to be a fan of the 24-year-old forward and believes he can find his feet again at Estadio Benito Villamarín.

Now, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that everything is in place for Antony to complete his switch to Betis, where he will ply his trade for the next six months.

Romano wrote on X, “Antony to Real Betis, here we go! Verbal agreement in place between all parties with Man United too.”

“Documents being checked; then time for travel and medical tests.”

“United will let him leave on loan deal with 𝐧𝐨 buy clause. He’ll be formally back to United in June.”

The Red Devils will be counting on Antony to impress at Betis, which could help draw interest from potential suitors in the summer transfer window.
