Manchester United are in talks with Serie A outfit Lecce over the signing of defender Patrick Dorgu, reports the reliable David Ornstein.
It’s well-known that United are on the hunt for a left-sided full-back, who is capable of slotting into Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.
United’s need for such a player has also been made more urgent by Luke Shaw’s fitness struggles and speculation over Tyrell Malacia’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
Shaw remains sidelined with a fresh issue he picked up in early December while United are believed to have told Malacia that he is free to leave this month.
The Red Devils have been linked to several targets including Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Alvaro Fernandez (Benfica) and of course, Dorgu.
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Dorgu would find it difficult to turn down a move to United despite Lecce’s technical director stating that he would not be sold during the ongoing winter transfer window.
Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic has revealed that United have kickstarted talks with Lecce to try and get a deal for Dorgu over the line.
According to Ornstein, “Manchester United are in talks to sign left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.”
“Discussions have begun over the 20-year-old as United line up options ahead of making decisions on ins and outs this month.”
“Nothing is yet agreed but head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his new side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.”
Since joining Lecce in 2022, Dorgu has made 43 first-team appearances for the side.
So far this term, the 20-year-old has notched three goals and one assist in 20 Serie A matches.
