“People write us off”: United Women’s star sends out defiant message after derby day heroics

Ella Toone spoke of the pride she had for her team as Manchester United Women ran out 4-2 winners in the derby against Manchester City.

Toone, who scored her first goal of the season last week against West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup, roared back into form with a well-taken hat trick at the Etihad.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game she commented “we’re speechless as well. It’s a derby, so it means so much.”

“I thought we put in a massive shift and a great performance. I think we deserved it.”

United’s number seven stated that the result was that extra bit special for her as she grew up a fan of the club.

“I was letting the girls know – ‘girls, I’ve never scored in a Manchester derby, never scored against City’, and for a girl who supports Manchester United, I know what these derbies mean.”

Toone then commented that she wants to come in and affect every game and while she targeted a goal in the match, she was over the moon to end up with three on derby day.

The England international has had a tough season with the loss of her father and an injury picked up in November but she now looks to be returning to her sensational best.

“I’ve been through a lot, and when I got injured, it was a blessing in disguise. Looking back now, I needed it, not just physically but mentally as well. I’ve used my time wisely to get back fitter and stronger, but more importantly, look after myself.”

The 25 year old was keen to shower praise on her side after the win and claimed that sometimes people may underestimate the talent in the team.

“Sometimes people write us off but we know what squad we’ve got. We have personality, we’ve got attitude, we’ve got work-rate and we give it our all every time we step onto the pitch and we enjoy playing together.”

She finished by reaffirming how proud of the team’s effort she was and also dedicated the win to Brazilian teammate Geyse, who had to miss the game on personal leave.

Toone and the United Women will next be in action when they welcome Manchester City to the Leigh Sports village on Wednesday evening, aiming to make it to the semi-finals of the League Cup.

The Premier League and UEFA do not want Forest and Bournemouth success

      the-premier-league-and-uefa-do-not-want-forest-and-bournemouth-success
The Premier League and UEFA do not want Forest and Bournemouth success

This more competitive season with some unusual teams occupying the top seven is to be welcomed and the absolute dissolution of Manchester United and Spurs is delightful.

For the Premier League though, it’s very much a double-edged sword. They’re caught in a cleft stick. Teams without large global fanbases mean less money for less desirable advertising placements, lower total income and the worry that all those lovely wealthy despots will lose interest. They prefer the domination of the oligarchs and intolerant fascistic oppressors to anything else.

The economics suggest that it won’t be long before money reasserts its dominance. That means the richest succeed and this brief interregnum will be a distant memory. For this season to be a change from the status quo, for even the medium term, the likes of Bournemouth and Forest have to maintain this level of success for several seasons to more permanently transform their finances to compete with the behemoths.

I really hope they can. We badly need to see a future that doesn’t include an inevitable City steamroller to the top, with Liverpool in their wake and the nearly man’s trophyless touchline hysterics at the Emirates. It’s tedious for the neutral. Even those who are too young to remember it being different have now seen what it’s like. Much better when the team you think will win then doesn’t win, isn’t it? Wouldn’t it be great if it was always like this? This year Forest and Bournemouth, next year Palace and Brentford. Yes please.

While there will be blips, blips are not the same as variety being established as innate. Indeed, it’s not set up to be that way, not what the Premier League or UEFA want in order to maximise income. This presents them with a problem. The last thing they want is for us, the financial units on football’s spreadsheet, to see a more attractive way that means them coining less cash.

You’d think a proper, competitive, unpredictable league would be good for business, but I can tell you now that anything we write about a brilliant Bournemouth performance will get a fraction of the traffic talking about another Manchester United humiliation or another Arsenal capitulation. They don’t want it. It’s all about the money, from top to bottom and side to side. If you ever wonder why almost anything happens in top-flight football, ‘it’s the money’ is almost always the answer.

Ideally the Premier League and UEFA want the most followed, richest clubs to dominate but for their audience – which, let’s not forget, contains more neutrals for most matches – to be fed a sop to unpredictability with an outsider club making the top six, so it looks like change enough to mask the stasis.

Financially, these people hate football’s ornery nature but love the riches it provides. They crave a sealed league of big clubs and predictable large income. Sport? No thanks, too unpredictable. How can you invest in that?

Unpredictability does not satisfy their greed gland. But now, it’s not just old fellas like me who are nostalgic for the 70s when twice as many different clubs made the top six than in the last 10 years, youngsters have seen the brilliance of well-run, well-managed teams doing well, thanks to some wealthy clubs not being either. How will they feel when the old hegemony of wealth reasserts itself?

The Premier League, so long reliant on brainwash advertising and slow-motion packages with screaming commentators to fill the excitement hole, might find that people finally realise the emperor has no clothes and is exorbitantly charging you to see his bloated, over-indulged body.

PL rivals’ left back becomes United’s “priority” as price tag and wages rule out Amorim’s first choice – report

Manchester United are targeting Wolverhampton Wanderers pair Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha.

Old Trafford had to suffer yet another frustrating afternoon when Brighton and Hove Albion ran out deserved 3-1 winners yesterday.

Ruben Amorim commented after the match that this was probably the worst team in United’s history and it is abundantly clear that the team is in desperate need of additions.

United have many holes to plug but two of the most obvious are left wing back and striker as Diogo Dalot continues to prove he cannot play at the top level in this position from a defensive or attacking sense.

Moreover, while Joshua Zirkzee has outperformed Rasmus Hojlund lately, the Red Devils still require attacking signings to help their flailing attack.

The Independent report that “Manchester United are looking at Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri as an alternative at left-back.”

“Ruben Amorim has made the position a priority this January as he seeks tactical balance for his team”. The club has also shown interest in Amorim’s former player Nuno Mendes at Paris Saint-Germain.

Nonetheless, a deal for the Portugal international is considered too expensive at the moment, both because of the €60 million price tag and “vast wages”.

There have also been reports that he may be considering signing a new deal at the Ligue 1 leaders.

Due to the complexity of the deal, United have begun to look at alternatives and Ait-Nouri has come up on the side’s radar.

Despite a tough season for Wolves as a team, the Algerian has impressed and the 23 year old “has shown an aptitude for playing at both left wing-back and left-back in his time for Wolves, with Amorim appreciating his flexibility as well as his movement.”

United also hold an interest in his teammate Matheus Cunha but “face considerable opposition” due to his fantastic form in this campaign.

Arsenal are reported to also be interested in doing a deal for the Brazilian but Wolves have no interest in selling in January as they are currently locked in a relegation battle.

United make €70m offer for world-class striker who has January exit clause – report

Manchester United have reportedly made a verbal offer to Napoli to sign Victor Osimhen.

According to Turkish journalist Kağan Dursun, the Red Devils recently offered €70 million to bring the Nigerian striker to Old Trafford.

The report suggests that Napoli officials travelled to Istanbul recently to secure Osimhen’s commitment to the club, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

While Osimhen is tied to Napoli, he reportedly has an exit clause that could facilitate a move in January.

Crucially, this clause does not limit his potential destinations, making it possible for any club to negotiate a transfer if they meet Napoli’s financial demands.

United’s interest comes amid a broader need for a reliable goalscorer.

Manager Ruben Amorim is under pressure to address the team’s attacking woes, and Osimhen’s profile aligns with United’s requirements.

Amorim’s side has lacked in front of goal, missing countless chances.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee show promise but do not possess the quality to lead the line for United

With his speed, strength, and finishing ability, Osimhen could become the focal point of their attack.

Arsenal is also monitoring the situation as they seek reinforcements to compete in the Premier League and Europe.

The Gunners’ manager, Mikel Arteta, is reportedly a fan of Osimhen and views him as an ideal addition to their squad.

If Napoli are unable to secure his long-term commitment, United could seize the opportunity to sign a player who has already demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level and deliver in critical moments.

United promote “impressive” academy keeper to first team amid latest Onana horror show – report

Manchester United have promoted academy goalkeeper Hubert Graczyk to the first team squad.

First choice goalkeeper Andre Onana started the season in remarkable form but his performances have significantly waned in recent weeks.

This was emphasised after a horror showing versus Brighton and Hove Albion, when he made two errors in the second half which resulted in the Seagulls winning the match.

Back up keeper Altay Bayindir impressed heavily in the FA Cup victory over Arsenal, saving a penalty in the match and also in the shootout, but has had his fair share of hairy moments in the first team as well.

It now appears that United may have to dip back into the transfer market to enhance their goalkeeping department with the likes of long-term targets Illan Meslier and Zion Suzuki linked once again with a move to Old Trafford.

The club may have solutions in their academy however, as The Manchester Evening News report that summer signing “Hubert Graczyk was seen training on the pitch with Onana and Bayindir in the pre-match preparations.

“The young goalkeeper hasn’t been officially named in a matchday squad, but he’s been briefly promoted to the first-team set up to help United prepare for their last matches.”

“Graczyk was spotted warming up with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir before United faced Arsenal in the FA Cup third round. He was put through his paces, facing shots from his teammates, and was present again before Thursday’s match again Southampton in the Premier League.”

Regular third choice keeper Tom Heaton watched the Southampton game last week from the director’s box.

“Graczyk is thought to have impressed coaches and could eventually be promoted to the first-team on a permanent basis.”

The 21 year old left Arsenal as a free agent in the summer and has played three games for the under 21s.

He has not played for the academy side since conceding five goals in a 5-2 loss to Sunderland at the start of November.

Video: United Women produce historic performance in pulsating 4-2 win in the derby

Manchester United women moved into a Champions League place in the Women’s Super League with a superb 4-2 victory at the Etihad against neighbours Manchester City this evening.

United started in blistering fashion as Elisabeth Terland prodded a shot just over the bar within the first 30 seconds of the match.

In only the second minute, Ella Toone made a fantastic run into the City box but unfortunately fired the ball right at Khiara Keating.

Marc Skinner’s side continued with their impressive start when Leah Galton powered down the left hand side and fired a fine effort toward goal but it glanced the side netting.

United were soon rewarded for their brave start, however. Just seconds later, Toone raced through once more and cutely dinked the ball over the onrushing City keeper and the Red Devils were ahead.

The away side’s tail was certainly up and they took control of the game when Galton took advantage of a bit of ping-pong in the City box and turned the ball in, showing great poacher instinct.

City finally responded to the red onslaught and Aoba Fujino curled just wide in the 29th minute.

Mary Fowler threatened again for the home side but the ball drifted harmlessly wide of Phallon Tullis-Joyce’s goal.

United continued to give it their all however, and a smart interception in the midfield set up Terland with a one-on-one but she fired over from inside the penalty box.

The away fans were in raptures just moments later as Keating’s goal kick towards Leila Ouahabi was short and Celin Bizet nicked in expertly to set up Toone for an easy finish to get her second of the game in the 36th minute.

Just four minutes later though, City got themselves a lifeline when Vivianne Miedema evaded her marker in the box and produced a powerful header that reduced the deficit.

A breathless first half continued as City scored their second with the United defence rattled.

In the second minute of added time in the first half, defender Rebecca Knaak rose highest at the back post to head the ball into the bottom corner past Tullis-Joyce.

United were thankful for the first half whistle after a few moments of madness had almost outdone an incredible performance for the majority of the 45 minutes.

Skinner’s side have great character though and when many teams would have folded, they started the second half in wonderful fashion as Toone scored her third and United’s fourth.

The City goalkeeper was in trouble just ten seconds into the half as her kick was blocked by Terland and a grateful Toone was on hand to race by and roll the ball into an empty net.

The home side came back however and Mary Fowler’s had a low shot smartly saved by Tullis-Joyce before Jill Roord’s header looped wide.

On 73 minutes, the home side thought they had equalised but United’s American keeper fantastically plucked the ball out of the air from a Knaack header.

On 78 minutes, Tullis-Joyce proved her worth again as she got down rapidly to turn away Fowler’s goal bound effort.

United managed the game well from then on but Maya Le Tissier had to produce a fantastic block in added time to deny Knaack yet again.

Skinner’s side held on for an impressive 4-2 win and their first ever away win in the Manchester derby.

The Red Devils will be hoping they can repeat the trick on Wednesday when they welcome the same opponents to the Leigh Sports Village in the League Cup quarter final.

Solskjaer opens up on United’s surprise role that led to him accepting Besiktas’ managerial offer

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that the Besiktas job reminds him of his stint in the Old Trafford dugout.

On Saturday, Solskjaer was confirmed as the new Besiktas boss.

He had been out of management since he was sacked by United in 2021 after a string of poor performances and results.

The Norwegian takes over at the Super Lig side who have been without a head coach since letting Giovanni van Bronckhorst go last month.

Solskjaer put pen to paper on a deal running until the end of the 2025/26 season, with the option of extending his stay by an additional 12 months.

The former striker will be joined at Besiktas by assistant coach Erling Moe and goalkeeping coach Richard John Hartis.

Speaking to reporters [via ESPN], Solskjaer noted that he accepted Besiktas’ offer because of the similarities to his time at United.

The 51-year-old remarked, “I’ve been outside football for a little while, as a boss.”

“But I’ve been working in UEFA and I’ve been following football as well as this club … This project seems a little bit like Manchester United for me. We were sixth, then we become third and then second. And this is step by step.

“And of course we’re here to win, so hopefully we can make it faster. But we have to be realistic. And yes, I had many offers, but as I said before, it had to be the right offer worth me moving away from my perfect life.”

“You need to feel that heartbeat racing again, because [you ask] ‘do you have the energy?’ and the project that the president and the board have been talking to me about it was the right thing I needed now.”

He added, “I’ve been following United [since I left] and it’s difficult when it goes down. You need to just turn the boat and hopefully we can turn the boat quickly here.”

In the Turkish top flight, Solskjaer will come up against his predecessor as United boss José Mourinho, currently in charge of Fenerbahce.

“It’s his choice”: Amorim claims Marcus Rashford has told him he doesn’t want to be selected

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted that Marcus Rashford’s continued absence from the team is due to the player’s own choice.

On yet another occasion, Rashford was left out from a United matchday squad, as his teammates were beaten 3-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter scored for Brighton to seal its third win against United in as many seasons at Old Trafford.

The result has left United in 13th place in the Premier League standings and closer to the relegation zone than Champions League qualification.

Amorim has lost seven of his 15 games in charge since succeeding former manager Erik ten Hag in November. Six defeats from the first 12 home league games of the season is also United´s worst run since 1893/94.

This poor run of form has coincided with Rashford’s absence. Indeed, it has now been over a month since Rashford last featured for United.

The England international has only been named in one of their last nine matchday squads across all competitions and even then, he remained an unused substitute as the Red Devils slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle.

Speaking in his post-match press conference after the Brighton game, Amorim was asked about Rashford and whether he was let down by the fact the forward was not available to him for selection.

Amorim responded, “No. It is his choice. I don’t want to focus this bad moment because in these games we lost, Rashford is not here.”

“I don’t want to put this moment on Rashford. Rashford is out of this moment because he is not playing.”

“No matter what, I am not going to put a player I don’t believe is the best for the team.”

Rashford continues to be linked with an exit from United this month, with a number of teams including AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, West Ham, Galatasaray and Tottenham Hotspur all thought to be interested in his services.

“Worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United”: Amorim’s post-match words send shock waves across the football world

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has made an alarming admission, insisting the current team may be the worst in the history of the club, following Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Brighton needed only four minutes to break the deadlock as Carlos Baleba’s long ball over the top sent Kaoru Mitoma through on goal before the winger unselfishly squared for Yankuba Minteh to tap into an open goal.

Bruno Fernandes equalised for United from the spot-kick after Baleba ended up dragging Joshua Zirkzee down to the ground from inside the box.

Mitoma restored the visitors’ advantage after firing in from the back post, before a huge mistake from goalkeeper Andre Onana gifted Georginio Rutter a third in an eventful 3-1 win for the Seagulls.

After the match, Amorim spoke to MUTV and labelled his side’s performance in front of the home crowd as “not acceptable.”

In his press conference, Amorim went a step further, labelling the current United team as probably the worst in the club’s 147-year history.

The Portuguese coach told reporters, “In ten games in the Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.”

“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now.”

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

“It’s hard to explain. We have to acknowledge the moment and not going around the problem. Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances. We are underperforming and have to accept that.”

He added, “It’s unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, imagine Manchester United. So it’s a really hard moment but we have to continue, we have to continue, there is no other way. We need to suffer and continue. Our players are really nervous and anxious. When you go inside the last pitch you remember the last games here, if I feel it the players feel it a lot. The only way is to continue to do the same and to win games.”

Amorim expressed discontent with how his players changed positions during the loss to Brighton.

“I knew that was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment. But when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard.”

“So that’s why I’m telling we are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same. To help my players is to give them the tools to play in this way. But then without training is really hard, then without training and losing games [it’s harder].”

“You can feel it in the end of the game. Everybody was changing position and that is something I will not see again. We can lose but we have to maintain position.”

On fielding two strikers, Amorim pointed out, “If I want to show to the media or to the fans, I put two strikers. But I didn’t put two strikers because if I do it’s going to be more difficult for them to understand the way we play.”

“I am just here to help my players but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records. It’s a proud thing we need to change.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they face Rangers in the Europa League.

Ruben Amorim correctly tells players they are ‘maybe the worst team in history of Man United’

Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that his Manchester United side are perhaps the worst the club have ever had in their illustrious history.

United sit 13th in the table and closer to the relegation zone than the European places after their 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

That leaves Amorim with just three wins to his name in United’s 11 Premier League games since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November – half as many as they have had defeats.

“In 10 games in the Premier League we won two (sic), I know that. Imagine this for a fan of Manchester United, imagine this for me.

“You are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach – imagine that. We need to survive this moment. I know that.

“We are being maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know that you want headlines, but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. So there you go, your headline.”

Asked why United have been so crap (in not so many words), Amorim said: “It is hard to explain, we have to acknowledge the moment and not go around the problem.

“Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances. It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any club in the Premier League, never mind Manchester United. It is a really hard moment but we have to continue.

“The opponents are better than us in many details. That we cannot be consistent. That I am not helping my players in the moment.

“It is a hard moment – we have to acknowledge we are in a very difficult situation. All the bad records, losing games at home, losing in the Premier League; we are really underperforming.”

United will take on Rangers at Old Trafford in the Europa League on Thursday night before returning to Premier League action with a trip to Fulham on Sunday evening.
