“That should never happen”: Hargreaves gives blunt assessment of “confused” United players after Brighton defeat

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has branded the current crop of players available to Ruben Amorim as “confused” following the side’s loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

United went behind inside four minutes after Yankuba Minteh turned in Kaoru Mitoma’s cross. Bruno Fernandes levelled from the penalty spot halfway through the first period, before second-half goals from Mitoma and Georginio Rutter put the game to bed.

The third goal in particular was a disappointing one, as Yasin Ayari’s low cross was spilled straight into the path of Rutter by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Ruben Amorim has now won three, drawn two and lost six Premier League matches since replacing Erik ten Hag at the beginning of November.

Speaking to Premier League Productions after the final whistle, Hargreaves said, “They [United] never looked like scoring.”

“They scored from a penalty, that was it. Brighton had one disallowed, scored three and had numerous chances outside of that. When you see the graphic there, the last six results, everybody is giving United trouble.”

“I mean, Southampton are last place with six points from 60 and could have got something. So when you think you’re going to play Newcastle, Bournemouth…you’re going to get punished. And I think that’s the worry for Amorim.”

“He’s come in and said, ‘Look, I’m going to play this way.’ You’d have to say it doesn’t suit the players that they have right now. It’s not just about playing your way, which is fine. You have got to find a way to get results. That’s it.”

Hargreaves added, “I think they struggle to keep the ball with this formation sometimes. To progress between the lines because it’s only two midfielders, I think it’s hard to keep it. So you’re relying on individual moments like Amad to get out of trouble.”

Asked whether he’s seeing the right attitude and application from the United players, Hargreaves replied, “I don’t think it’s an attitude thing. I think the boys are trying.”

When further quizzed about whether they look confused, Hargreaves pointed out, “They probably are confused because they’re trying to do what the manager wants and they’re going to do it because if they don’t, they’re not going to play.”

“But I think the recruitment has been a huge issue over the last three, four years. Look at Brighton, they had six players in that starting XI, who would start for Manchester United. That should never happen, ever, with the utmost respect.”

“They shouldn’t have players that get into the United team. They shouldn’t even get into the 18 and they got six that would start at United. It goes back to recruitment.”

Hargreaves emphasised that United need to get recruitment right going forward.

“This is not acceptable”: Disappointed Amorim laments familiar mistake that “killed” United in loss vs. Brighton

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has lamented his side’s inability to recover from setbacks, following the 3-1 loss at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Yankuba Minteh fired the visitors ahead early on, but a Bruno Fernandes penalty midway through the opening 45 minutes brought United level.

However, an eventful second half saw Kaoru Mitoma tap home at the back post before a huge mistake from goalkeeper Andre Onana gifted Georginio Rutter a goal that would eventually secure all three points for them.

After the final whistle,  a visibly disappointed Amorim spoke to MUTV and gave his verdict on United’s performance and the result.

He told club media, “It’s more of the same. We suffer goals early in the game and everything is twice as hard to manage.”

“We try to have possession, to control the ball but then the players feel that anxious. They’re always controlling the passes, not putting the ball between the lines, really nervous in every touch they do.”

“We managed to score and create some momentum but after half-time, they got the second goal and the third goal…killed the game and more or less more what happened the last games we’ve had at home.

“This is not acceptable. No matter the amount of training that you have, you have to acknowledge that we’re Manchester United and losing so many games at home is not acceptable.”

Amorim added, “We need to win games, no matter what we need to win games and then pass to that phase.”

“The truth is that we’re putting one idea and then we’re losing games. So, everything is really hard because if you don’t win games you cannot believe in the way we play…it’s harder and so we have to continue to do what we are doing but we need to win games to sell the idea to the players.”

On whether it’s helpful to have another game coming up so soon, Amorim replied, “I think we need training to fix things but it’s another opportunity to win games and in this moment, that’s the most important thing.”

United are now 13th in the Premier League standings, one point below Crustal Palace who are a place above them.

Up next for the Red Devils is a Europa League clash against Rangers on Thursday before going away to Fulham next Sunday.

Nimble Brighton show why Manchester United remain anchored to depths under Ruben Amorim

Nimble Brighton show why Manchester United remain anchored to depths under Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim warned when he came in at Old Trafford that it would take a long time to fix their many, many issues, and goodness me, he wasn’t wrong.

The United name, the way the club have been structured, and the massive contracts some of their squad are on make it an absolute massive steam liner of a ship to turn around quickly.

Brighton could not be more of a contrast. Their entire Premier League existence has been built on being nimble and responsive, knowing that their best players and managers will often be quickly poached. With a hat-tip to Collin Millar, this is Brighton’s third away win in a row at Old Trafford, all under different managers, with 33 different players featuring for Albion.

United, meanwhile, remain stuck in the ice somewhere around the Arctic circle, failing to move and slowly rusting away.

Try as you might to find signs of progress since Amorim’s arrival, it is extremely difficult to do so, primarily because there aren’t really any.

👉 Man Utd dealt huge transfer blow as ‘main’ target ‘closes door’ amid ‘most likely’ outcome reveal

Results have got even worse after Amorim’s arrival, with performances remaining underwhelming. The highlight of his reign so far, away to Liverpool, was a 2-2 draw that only felt like a win. Their FA Cup penalty shooutout win over Arsenal last weekend was impressive work with ten men, but still relied on Arsenal wasting a fleet of chances (in fairness, a reasonable strategy at the moment). You get no credit for masterminding a win over Southampton this season, and even then they were reliant on a brilliant late individual showing from Amad Diallo.

For the time being, that leaves us looking for points of difference, rather than improvement. One of the notable oddities of United’s form under Erik ten Hag this season was just how hard they were working to such underwhelming effect.

United still rank top for tackles attempted, tackles made and interceptions made per game this season, despite all of those metrics dropping since Amorim’s arrival. For a side with the sixth-highest possession in the division, that is…a bit weird.

Amorim has spent his time at the club so far coaching United to try and work smarter rather than harder. We’ve seen that in effect against Liverpool and Arsenal, with the defence smartly picking their moments to nip out of the defensive line in an effort to win the ball. Once that was done, United would look for a couple of sharp passes out to the wings to finish the move off.

All of which is very good and nice, but has served them well in all of about three games: against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

Already that ploy has been cracked. Brighton went man-for–man on the wings to remove the quick out ball, for one. That left United to try and break down a midfield press without much success; and whenever they did get past the Brighton midfield, the Seagulls would simply play the ball over the top, rather than in to their striker’s feet where the United defence could do that line-breaking job to win a tackle quickly.

After that FA Cup win with ten man last week, the focus was on United’s frustrating tendency to get up for the big game and fail to raise to the occasion when the spotlight was shining that bit less brightly.

That notion that there is something rotten in the dressing room holding them back from the most strenuous self-motivation may well have something to it, but it can’t be the whole story.

The reality is that United…simply aren’t very good. Amorim is just the latest in a long line of managers who has tried to provide them with a defensive framework around which to build a cohesive and effective side, and in those games against their three biggest old rivals, it has worked.

It’s not even like United are getting absolutely batted in the games they have lost. Bournemouth won 3-0 with nine shots, four shots on target. Wolves won 2-0 with seven shots, four on target. And now Brighton have won 3-1 with six shots, three on target.

To so consistently come out on the losing side against those kinds of numbers usually has a lot more to do with poor work on the ball than off it: you may not give up many chances, but those you do have caught you so massively on the hop that the opposition can’t help but take advantage.

In other words, Amorim has been a good rope-a-dope manager so far, but ends up serving as the dope himself against sides who try to do the same to United.

That was certainly the case against Brighton – and unfortunately for Amorim, the squad at his disposal offers him very little ability to start bossing games the way he would like.

3 tackles, 17 duels, 80% passing: United star continues to find form despite dismal Brighton result

Manchester United faltered to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton and Hove Albion today as Ruben Amorim’s difficult start to life at Old Trafford continues.

The Red Devils were plagued by individual errors once again, with goalkeeper Andre Onana having a particularly bad day, but it was a flat performance across the board with few positive points.

Leading the line for United has long been a thankless task and following some bright cameos in recent matches, and the nosediving form of Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee started up front for the first time this year.

The Dutchman looked sharper than most of his team mates, and balanced providing an attacking threat with a gritty determination.

No player on either side made more tackles than Zirkzee, who pressed hard to make three tackles during the match – no United defender managed more than two.

He was also involved in the most duels of anyone on the pitch, going head-to-head with a Brighton player 17 times in total as he fulfilled a combative role which required lots of hold-up play.

The 23-year-old won five of 11 ground duels, second only to the tricky Amad Diallo. He contested twice as many aerial duels as anyone else in a red shirt, winning two of six.

Zirkzee was fouled three times, one of which won United the penalty which Bruno Fernandes converted to temporarily pull the Red Devils back into the game.

The pay-off for the Dutchman playing the lone striker role was a lack of time spent on the ball – he only took 33 touches, the lowest of any starting outfield United player.

He completed 12 of an attempted 15 passes, coming out at 80% accuracy, and found his man once with a long ball.

It’s fair to say that Zirkzee did not hit the ground running at Old Trafford, after joining from Bologna in the summer, but he has been gradually finding a degree of form of late.

The Dutchman still has a long way to go, but he is moving in the right direction and is surely on the brink of becoming Amorim’s starting number 9 – at least until a potential new striker arrives.

Old Trafford has turned into Theatre of Nightmares for United as bogey team take advantage of Onana errors

Manchester United suffered their sixth home Premier League defeat of the season, a 1-3 defeat against their bogey team Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

This is the most number of home losses the club have suffered having played 12 times at home in more than 100 years and Ruben Amorim’s side remain in 13th position.

The Seagulls have now won six of the last eight meetings between the two sides, including the last three league fixtures at the Theatre of Dreams.

Home advantage has become a myth this season and the team seems to play better away from home and away from the glare of 75,000 fans.

United fail to make home advantage count again

The Portuguese had promised a rollercoaster season and we are certainly seeing it in action. After every good display in a big away game, the team fails to perform at home.

They were lucky to escape with a win on Thursday with Amad Diallo sparing their blushes with a 12-minute hattrick late on. Before that, bottom of the league Southampton looked much the better side.

As has become the norm, it was the home side who conceded first but they did respond well as Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot after Joshua Zirkzee had won a penalty.

But their gameplay completely collapsed in the second half as the Seagulls netted twice with Andre Onana having a shocker in goal.

When former boss Erik ten Hag had decided to move on from David de Gea, he had envisioned his new goalie to be comfortable with the ball at his feet and someone who is brave off the line.

He decided to splash £47.2 million in the summer of 2023 to bring Onana from Inter Milan, having worked with him previously in Amsterdam.

            Onana error again

After a difficult first few months, he was looking like the real deal in the early parts of this campaign but on Sunday,  the Cameroonian was anything but.

For Brighton’s second, he stayed rooted to the spot as Kaoru Mitoma ghosted in to score a diving header. And the third came from a huge mistake with the former Ajax star failing to collect a routine cross.

While his shot-stopping has helped the Red Devils quite a few times this season, Onana is building up quite a catalogue of errors in his still nascent United career.

Altay Bayindir has shown he is more than ready to step in if required, as seen from his heroic display against Arsenal in the FA Cup. It might be time to let the Turk have a go in goal starting from the next game against Rangers in the Europa League.

Manchester United were beaten 3-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

United conceded an early goal after Kaoru Mitoma shook off Noussair Mazraoui and broke into the box before squaring the ball into Yankuba Minteh, who was all too happy to tap it in.

However, United fought back and restored parity in the 23rd minute courtesy of a Bruno Fernandes penalty kick. Joshua Zirkzee won the spot-kick after he was brought down by Carlos Baleba.

The visitors returned from the break firing on all cylinders and restored their lead 15 minutes after the restart through Mitoma. The Japanese winger got the beating of Mazraoui once again to force the ball past the reach of Andre Onana.

Brighton’s goal was almost gifted to them on a platter by Onana, who came out of his goal to collect a cross but spilled it into the path of Georginio Rutter. The substitute made no mistake as he guided it into the back of an empty net.

Several United players simply didn’t turn up but Amad was not one of them.

Amad was his side’s hero last time out, registering a late hat-trick that spared United’s blushes against bottom-of-the-league Southampton.

He was brilliant yet again vs. Brighton, even though he didn’t get on the score sheet. Amad’s most notable contribution was his high press which led to Zirkzee winning the penalty.

During the time he was on the pitch, Amad touched the ball 52 times and found his teammates with 20 of the 26 passes e attempted, managing an individual pass accuracy of 77%.

Four of his passes were key passes.

Amad tried to deliver one cross and successfully connected. He was brilliant defensively, winning seven of the 11 ground duels he delved into. He also comes out on top in the one aerial challenge get contested.

The 22-year-old made one clearance and as many interceptions. He contributed an additional three tackles.

              (Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Man Utd transfer: Red Devils eye £105m double deal from PL rivals after latest Garnacho update

Man Utd are looking at Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri as an alternative left-back option after learning Paris Saint-Germain’s asking price for Nuno Mendes, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been having a largely miserable season with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 13th in the Premier League table ahead of the match with Brighton on Sunday.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag and immediately implemented a 3-4-3 formation with a fresh style of play and philosophy as he looks to turn their fortunes around.

Not a lot has changed since Amorim’s arrival but their last three matches have given Man Utd fans some hope that the Portuguese head coach could get them back to challenging for titles once again.

They produced two good displays against Liverpool and Arsenal before they came from a goal down to beat Southampton in the Premier League in midweek.

And Man Utd fans are now keen to see the Red Devils bring in some players to help Amorim get the best out of his formation and style.

A report claimed earlier today that the Red Devils are now willing to consider offers for Alejandro Garnacho as they attempt to raise money for incomings in the January transfer window.

Napoli and Tottenham are interested in a deal for Garnacho but Man Utd will reportedly still hold out for a deal worth around €70m (£59m).

And that money could be used to improve a couple of areas of Amorim’s squad with The Independent claiming that Man Utd are ‘looking at Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri as an alternative at left-back’.

Man Utd have been interested in PSG’s Mendes but the Red Devils are ‘currently a significant distance from matching his €60m asking price and vast wages’.

It has been claimed that Wolves want £45m in January if they are to sell Ait-Nouri and the Algeria international ‘has shown an aptitude for playing at both left wing-back and left-back in his time for Wolves, with Amorim appreciating his flexibility as well as his movement’.

                The report adds:

‘United also have an interest in Wolves teammate Matheus Cunha [who is reportedly valued at around £65m], but face considerable opposition there for a forward considered one of the revelations of the season. Arsenal are among those looking at the Brazilian, but Wolves are intent on keeping him this January amid a battle to stay up.’

Man Utd spent over £180m in the summer transfer market with Joshua Zirkzee one of the players signed to attempt to improve the Red Devils’ scoring record.

Zirkzee has already come in for lots of criticism for his lack of goals and performances – but ex-Man Utd defender Paul Parker was impressed by the Netherlands international against Southampton.

Parker said recently: “He’s impressed when he’s come on as a sub against Southampton and the Arsenal game was his best performance. He showed some foresight and he had a little bit of drive about him. He got into areas, driving forward and lets be honest his impact was better than anything Hojlund did throughout his time on the pitch.”

“He took the penalty as well which might come off the back of the fans singing his name in the Liverpool game. I wasn’t fazed when he took the pen because of what he did in the game.”

“I don’t know if it’’s a turning point because things change in football quickly but I wouldn’t be surprised if he started the next game. I don’t think anyone wants to see Hojlund start either. United have to look at someone to come in to play the number nine role.”

“United have winnable games in name at least coming up so it’s an opportunity to get a European spot. United must be in Europe every season.”

Four things we learnt as United lose 1-3 to Brighton in hugely frustrating display

Manchester United welcomed Brighton and Hove Albion to Old Trafford, aiming to win two Premier League games on the bounce.

Andre Onana took up his usual spot between the posts with Harry Maguire coming in for Lisandro Martinez. Leny Yoro kept his place in spite of a poor showing versus Southampton and Matthijs de Ligt completed the back three.

Diogo Dalot returned from suspension and Noussair Mazraoui started at right wing-back.

Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo once again started in the middle of the park with Amad Diallo moving further forward after his hat trick on Thursday.

Bruno Fernandes started as expected and Joshua Zirkzee got the nod ahead of Rasmus Hojlund after a couple of positive showings from the bench lately.

Here are four things we learnt from the match.

United start poorly again at home

After the poor performance at home to Southampton on Thursday, United would have wanted to jump right out of the blocks today.

Ruben Amorim’s side have fallen behind in the first half against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Southampton lately at Old Trafford.

After just five minutes Yankuba Minteh had already broken the United defensive line.

United responded midway through the first half with a Bruno Fernandes penalty but falling behind so often, so early at home must soon stop if the side are to create any sort of momentum in terms of positive results.

                  Team’s pressing is bearing fruit

The Red Devils are clearly still a major work in progress but slowly and steadily fans can see Amorim’s fingerprints over the team.

On Thursday against Southampton, Amad grabbed his hat trick with wonderful pressing to nick the ball off the defender’s toes and slot in his third.

Today a poor kick by Bart Verbruggen was closed down well and Joshua Zirkzee won a penalty that his captain cooly put away.

Amorim will undoubtedly still see much work left to do even in this regard and the overall objective will be to be more dangerous in attack with the ball than out of possession.

Nonetheless, the team and fans are seeing the rewards of working hard and honestly off the ball, often led by their electric star Amad Diallo.

While the pressing message is getting through, whatever they are doing on the training pitch isn’t making the team any harder to score against.

Old Trafford fans are getting used to their side wilting under pressure but the lack of concentration the defence regularly shows is incredibly worrying.

Brighton dominated the ball in the second half and scored their second on the hour mark.

The defence fell asleep as Kaoru Mitoma snuck in to restore the Seagulls’ lead.

Andre Onana also had much to answer for as he inexplicably left the ball when he probably should have come out and tried to collect the teasing cross.

                  Onana needs to be dropped

The Cameroonian keeper started the season strongly but his form has fallen off a cliff in the last month or so.

He has failed to impress in numerous outings but after the failure to deal with Brighton’s second cross, a calamitous moment saw United concede their third.

Under little pressure, Onana incredibly pushed the ball to Georginio Rutter, who gratefully passed the ball into an empty net.

Amorim’s side have numerous problems but the culture of constantly shooting themselves in the foot must be incredibly galling for the Portuguese coach.

With Altay Bayindir impressing against Arsenal in the FA Cup, perhaps he deserves a chance until the end of the season and this reopens the debate that the Red Devils will need to dip into the transfer market once more to solve their goalkeeping crisis.

Sunday horror show: This star’s humiliating error perfectly summed up United’s 3-1 loss to Brighton

Manchester United slumped to a 3-1 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

Hot off a 3-1 win over Southampton, Man United were back to their usual troubles as their defence fell apart in front of the Old Trafford crowd. Sadly, a humiliating mistake by Andre Onana was ingrained in the minds of United fans following yet another difficult afternoon.

Within two minutes, Brighton was on the attack as Joao Pedro weaved past Leny Yoro, with Harry Maguire tracking back to cover him. Pedro’s through ball hurtled toward Danny Welbeck in the centre, though Andre Onana was able to intercept. Clearly, peak concentration was needed by the United defence in order to keep the visitors’ attackers at bay.

Four minutes in, United were already trailing. Kaoru Mitoma beat the offside trap, making the most of United’s high line. From there, he simply had to slot the ball into the centre to tee up an easy shot for Yankuba Minteh, who opened the scoring. Yet another shocking start for United this season.

United looked to establish dominance on the ball in the minutes that followed as they looked to control the flow of the game. Still, the Brighton defence held steady, refusing to allow the home side to set up any clear goalscoring opportunities.

Amad Diallo was pulled down in a goalmouth scramble in the Brighton box, yet no penalty was given. Barely a minute later, Joshua Zirkzee surged into the box, pouncing on a quick pass from Amad following an interception. Penalty to United as Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba was shown a yellow card for pulling Zirkzee down.

Up stepped Bruno Fernandes to the penalty spot to fire his side back into the game. The United skipper cooly directed his penalty into the bottom left corner, misdirecting the keeper and pulling United level. 1-1 after 23 minutes of play.

In the 32nd minute, United launched a rapid counter, with Fernandes playing a superb cross to Mazraoui across the field. His through ball found Amad, who was dispossessed. A promising sign of attacking potential from United.

Six minutes from the break, it appeared as if Amad beat the offside trap, picking up a surgical long ball from Manuel Ugarte. While he beat the keeper, he was too close to the byline to get a shot on goal, thereby giving the defence the chance to track back. While the offside flag was raised, it was yet another positive counter from United.

Seconds before the 45-minute mark, Amad was held back by Mitoma, earning United a free-kick near the right corner flag. Fernandes whipped in a threatening cross, with Harry Maguire’s header going wide. He was subsequently adjudged to be offside.

As two minutes of stoppage time were almost up, Pedro received the ball on the edge of the United box. Fortunately, the defence was on him, with Matthijs de Ligt, Maguire, and Ugarte sprinting to the rescue. Ugarte performed an excellent tackle to dispossess the striker and ensure that the score remained 1-1 going into the break.

Three minutes after the restart, United were on the attack, with Amad taking a shot from outside the box that was blocked.

51 minutes in, Brighton received a free-kick on the edge of the box due to a careless foul by Kobbie Mainoo. Despite Yasin Ayari slipping as he took the kick, the ball entered the box, causing mass confusion as United and Brighton players wrestled for the ball. After a flurry of pinball motions, the ball fell to Pedro, who swivelled around Zirkzee and put the ball under Onana into the net.

Before the goal could be awarded, VAR was called into play due to a potential foul in the area by Brighton. Upon conducting a pitchside review, the referee concluded that Diogo Dalot had been fouled by Jan Paul van Hecke, who kicked the full-back. 1-1 the score remained.

After having his boot clipped by Quomah Baleba, Fernandes took a threatening free-kick that swept across the face of goal. It was a pity that no United player could get a boot to the ball during what was a dangerous attacking opportunity.

On the hour mark, Mitoma restored Brighton’s lead. Yankuba Minteh played a quick cross to the left-winger, who beat Onana with a shot inches from the goal line. 2-1 to the visitors with little over a half-hour to play. It was a moment to forget for Noussair Mazraoui, who lost his duel to Mitoma before crashing into the post.

Ugarte was given a delayed yellow card after the referee played advantage for his foul leading up to the goal.

Maguire played a soaring long ball to Dalot, who beat the Brighton defence on the left flank. He cut the ball back to Fernandes, whose shot was disappointingly floated wide.

In the 65th minute, Toby Collyer and Alejandro Garnacho came on for Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte. Clearly, Amorim was looking to go more attacking in order to find a way back into the match.

In the 74th minute, Amad played a decent cross to Zirkzee, whose volley was blocked. It was a decent build-up by Amorim’s men.

Barely a minute later, Onana made a horrific mistake that he would surely wish to forget. Ayari played a soft cross into the box that Onana should have easily grabbed hold of. Instead, he parried the ball to substitute Georginho, who scored in the open net to double Brighton’s lead.

In the 82nd minute, Dalot’s cross inside the box was cut out by Mitoma for a corner. It was a decent corner from Amad but the Brighton defence held steady.

Amorim then brought on Rasmus Hojlund and Antony in exchange for Zirkzee and Mazraoui.

Eight minutes of stoppage time were announced, handing United some time to find a way back into the game, although the probability of that was slim given the two-goal deficit.

United attempted a flurry of crosses into the Brighton box, albeit to no effect. The visitors’ defence was simply too rigid to penetrate.

Finally, the full-time whistle blew, bringing an end to a frustrating afternoon for the Old Trafford faithful. For the third consecutive time, United have been defeated at home by Brighton – an embarrassing record that no club of United’s stature should hold.

Starting XI: Onana, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Maguire, Fernandes, Zirkzee, Yoro, Amad, Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo
                    Subs: Collyer, Garnacho, Hojlund, Antony

Onana made two blunders but this star was just as much to blame for United’s 3-1 loss to Brighton

Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion. Here are our player ratings from the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 1 – Could have done slightly better for Brighton’s first two goals. Got a hand albeit not strong enough to Yankuba Minteh’s strike. Didn’t come out to claim the cross for Kaoru Mitoma’s goal, which restored Brighton’s lead. Made an extremely costly howler, which saw him spill the ball into the path of Georginio Rutter.

Matthijs de Ligt 6 – Did his job on the right of the three-man defence. Really aggressive and his passing out from the back was also good. Made a top clearance towards the end of the opening 45 minutes.

Harry Maguire 5 – Some shaky moments but decent overall. Not at fault for any of the three goals conceded.

Leny Yoro 6 – Improvement from the Southampton game, where he was repeatedly skinned by Kamaldeen Sulemana. Did OK in a mostly unfamiliar left-side position of the back-three.

Noussair Mazraoui 3 – Struggled against Mitoma. Lost his man for Brighton’s first goal and allowed Mitoma to get the better of him for the second, which came at some personal expense as he collided with the post.

Manuel Ugarte 5 – Struggled to get a foothold in the game early on but slightly improved as the game proceeded. Looked knackered when he came off.

Kobbie Mainoo 5 – A little bit better than he was last time out. Decent performance and some good contributions in possession.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Got one or two good chances going forward but he couldn’t make the most of them. Superb block to thwart Danny Welbeck just before the break.

Amad Diallo 8 – United’s best player by a distance. It was his brilliant pressing that led to Zirkzee winning the penalty, from which the hosts equalised. Constantly toom on his man to great effect and was a danger in the opposition box. Also great defensively. One of the few United players who certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Converted the penalty but wasn’t too involved before or after that.

Joshua Zirkzee 7 – Some fantastic hold-up play that helped United get high up the pitch. Won the penalty for his side and also had one or two sights of goal.

                      Substitutes

Toby Collyer 5 – Brought legs and energy in the middle of the park but not nearly enough attacking output.

Alejandro Garnacho 5 – Tried to make things happen but wasn’t really successful with his actions.

Antony 4 – Offered next to nothing when he came on.

Rasmus Hojlund 4 – Same as Antony.
