Man Utd sale: Chelsea ‘set to approach’ Amorim’s side as Ratcliffe demands £51m for forward

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are preparing their opening bid for Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, who Napoli also want to sign.

Man Utd are reportedly open to selling Garnacho this month but are not entertaining offers below 60 million euros (£50.5million).

The Argentine winger has been pretty underwhelming in 2024/25, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 21 Premier League appearances. At least he scored and assisted two against League One Barnsley in the Carabao Cup third round.

Serie A club Napoli have identified Garnacho as their top candidate to replace irreplaceable winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has joined Paris Saint-Germain for around £51m.

Antonio Conte’s side are facing some unexpected competition for the 20-year-old’s signature though, with Chelsea reportedly very interested.

The Blues have plenty of depth in attack but Mykhaylo Mudryk’s future is uncertain after he failed a drugs test.

The Ukrainian winger has not played for the Londoners since a Europa Conference League win over Heidenheim on November 28.

He remains suspended after testing positive for a banned substance in a doping test.

As Mudryk potentially faces a four-year ban from playing, Chelsea are understandably exploring their options in the January transfer window.

Garnacho would fit their transfer philosophy, with Todd Boehly targeting players under the age of 24.

It will be interesting to see where the Man Utd winger fits into Enzo Maresca’s plans, with Christopher Nkunku, Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Joao Felix and Nicolas Jackson all already at his disposal.

Despite the high volume of attacking talent in Maresca’s squad, Chelsea are now preparing a bid for Garnacho, says transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist confirms the Blues will ‘approach’ the Red Devils having ‘spoke to the player’s camp’ about a move.

Romano wrote on X: ‘Chelsea are set to approach Man United for Alejandro Garnacho, as expected.

‘Napoli remain keen but no agreement at €50m package, rejected by Man United; now also working on [Borussia Dortmund’s Karim] Adeyemi deal as revealed.

‘Chelsea spoke to player’s camp and will now discuss with Man United.’

Should Garnacho join for £60m, he will likely replace £60m Neto, who replaced £60m Mudryk, who replaced £60m Christian Pulisic. Fourth time’s the charm!

That is how much it will cost Chelsea to sign the Argentine international as Man Utd owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe refuses to reduce his asking price.

United “unlikely” to sign Spanish sensation this month due to “doubts” over his suitability to Amorim’s plans – report

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is in desperate need of a left wingback with Diogo Dalot struggling to provide the cutting edge required, especially in an attacking sense.

This was expected given the Portuguese is a right-back by trade but has been forced to play there amid Luke Shaw’s injury-enforced absence while Tyrell Malacia, who has struggled since his return from injury, linked with a January exit.

After being priced out of a move for Nuno Mendes, the club shifted its attention to Patrick Dorgu of Lecce but so far, their offers have fallen short of Lecce’s demands with Napoli competing for his signature.

Givemesport have claimed that the Red Devils will not rush into making a panic decision should they miss out on the versatile Danish star.

United will not panic buy a left wingback this January

They are prepared to wait till the summer in that case with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez also deemed too expensive for the winter window.

This effectively means a move for former Carrington graduate Alvaro Fernandez is unlikely despite the club having the option of reacquiring him for only £16.9 million.

The Spaniard is attracting interest from Barcelona after his impressive displays for Benfica and the Red Devils will not stand in their way should they match the Portuguese side’s valuation.

“GMS sources have been told that Manchester United are unlikely to turn their attentions towards Benfica’s Alvaro Fernandez if they are left frustrated in their pursuit of Dorgu as there are doubts over whether he is the long-term solution to their problems in the left wing-back position.

United will not activate Alvaro’s buyback clause

“Manchester United are prepared to wait until the summer to bolster their options if their top target cannot be signed and an attractive alternative proposition does not arise, GMS sources understand.”

The 21-year-old has played as a left-back for Benfica, netting three goals while also notching four assists in 30 games across all competitions this season.

The Spain U21 international has impressed moving forward, which is why there has been a clamour on social media for the 20-time English league champions to activate their buyback clause especially due to the lack of options at Amorim’s disposal.

But there remain question marks defensively with Barca taking full advantage of his errors in their most recent Champions League meeting. Which is most probably why the Old Trafford side have stayed away for now.

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea “set to approach” United with blockbuster raid for Alejandro Garnacho

Chelsea are “set to approach” Manchester United over a deal to sign Alejandro Garnacho after initial talks with the 20-year-old’s camp, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Italian transfer guru contends the London club will formalise their interest in Garnacho in an effort to jump ahead of Napoli, who have already seen a bid worth up to €50 million for the winger rejected by United.

Old Trafford officials are reluctantly open to selling the Argentinian international due to the club’s financial situation.

The acute pressure of the Premier League’s Profits and Sustainability Rules is severely limiting United’s ability to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad in the January window without first selling.

And, for a variety of reasons, there are few candidates in the Old Trafford dressing room who will command a large transfer fee that the team could also afford to lose.

Garnacho, despite his obvious talents and considerable scope for continued improvement, is a poor fit in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, lacking the skillset to play as a wingback or an attacking midfielder.

The young Argentine is best deployed as a left-winger in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system; formations used by Napoli and Chelsea respectively.

It’s evident, therefore, why both the player and his club would be open to a transfer that would have felt impossible just six months ago.

Chelsea are keenly aware of the economic struggles at Old Trafford and will hope to exploit them to land yet another talented youngster to add to Enzo Maresca’s squad with executives from Stamford Bridge ready to “discuss” a move with their Old Trafford

Man Utd target has ‘one foot’ in Old Trafford after Barcelona ‘cancel agreement’ amid Rashford ‘swap’

Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah reportedly has ‘one and a half feet’ in Old Trafford and could sign for Manchester United after Barcelona’s late U-turn.

The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back is among the 20 best footballers who could become a free agent this year as he has entered the final six months of his contract.

The 28-year-old has starred for Bayer Leverkusen in recent seasons and his form for the Bundesliga holders has seen him become a regular for Germany.

Tah is linked with several European sides ahead of his contract expiry and a free transfer to Barcelona has been mooted.

A report in Spain claims Tah had ‘everything agreed’ with Barcelona to join the La Liga leaders in the summer, but the club have decided to ‘cancel this agreement’ and ‘forget’ about the defender as Uruaguay international Ronald Araujo closes in on a contract extension.

READ: Rashford and Garnacho the latest to fail upwards from Man Utd?

On Wednesday evening, Fabrizio Romano revealed Araujo and Barcelona have come to terms on a new contact. He said: “Ronald Araujo’s new deal at Barcelona will be valid until June 2031, five year and half contract.

“Green light to the documents and it will be signed on Thursday, tomorrow. Barcelona director Deco got the green light from the player and his camp.”

With Barcelona no longer interested in Tah, the ‘path has cleared’ for Man Utd to sign the centre-back.

‘Despite Hansi Flick still considering Tah a very useful signing, Joao Laporta and Deco no longer have any intention of bringing in a player they believe is not needed at all, and this has left the path clear for Manchester United.

‘United had also shown strong interest in the Germany international, but they had forgotten about him after his deal with Barcelona was leaked. Finally, thanks to Araujo’s continuity, the Leverkusen star will go with Ruben Amorim.’

Another report in Spain claims Barcelona are ‘confident’ of ‘closing the Rashford operation as soon as possible’ and he could join the Spanish giants as part of a ‘swap’ with former Chelsea star Andreas Christensen.

‘Barcelona’s plan is to close a deal with Manchester United that would include the transfer of Christensen for a figure close to 15 million euros.

‘This entry would allow the Catalan club to free up wages and move forward with the arrival of Rashford, who would arrive on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy that would be negotiated in the summer.

‘Despite United’s interest, Barcelona are still not in complete agreement on the sale of the Dane. Flick values his experience and quality, but his injury history raises doubts. On the other hand, the Blaugrana club believe that the emergence of Pau Cubarsi and the good form of Araujo and Inigo Martínez could make Christensen’s departure less noticeable in the squad.

‘For his part, Rashford is looking favourably at the possibility of joining Barça.’

Man Utd: Rashford and Garnacho will fail upwards just like McTominay

One of the great truisms of the Fergie era was that from Manchester United the only way was down.

Great players either never left – why would you? – or when they did find themselves forced out, managed out or in rare cases actually did choose to leave of their own accord, generally soon discovered that the grass was rarely greener.

There is one definite and also one arguable exception to this rule that stood for two decades and more: Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.

But these truly are exceptions to prove a rule. Beckham was the most famous footballer in the world; Ronaldo remains a live contender in any wearying debate around the greatest of all time. And they also both joined Real Madrid.

That’s what it took to step up from United in those days. Being the best or most famous player on earth, and joining the biggest club on earth.

It’s not exactly news to note that Man United now and Man United then are slightly different beasts. Pretty sure we’ve all managed to get our heads round the fundamentals of that concept by now. It has been more than 10 years.

But still, though. Still it remains slightly jarring for those of us who lived through that long period of United dominance, one it truly seemed might never, ever end, to see just how much has changed and just how far they done fell.

It’s not just easy to step up from United now; it’s actively difficult not to. You can now cheerfully fail upwards from United. In the immortal words of Yazz and the Plastic Population, the only way is up.

Marcus Rashford is no United failure. But he has been struggling for some time and finds himself no longer in the manager’s plans. Imagine a player in that situation 15 years ago looking at the possible next destinations and all of them being so much better than Man United. Dortmund. Milan. Literally any other big Premier League club that isn’t Spurs. Actual Barcelona if they can get a bank loan sorted.

And then you get to the actual flops. Alejandro Garnacho isn’t the floppiest flop in floptown but that’s mainly because Antony exists. He has shown glimpses and flashes of brilliance but never the consistent high level that United demands, or at least did.

Where’s he heading? Chelsea. Who, while undoubtedly a club capable of matching United in the basket case sense are currently far better in a football one. And if not Chelsea, Garnacho’s reward for three often forgettable and only sporadically decent years in United’s first team is likely to be finding himself parachuted straight from a Premier League relegation fight to a Serie A title fight.

Even Antony – a literal byword for transfer flop – is set for what is currently at worst a sideways move to Real Betis and some mid-table La Liga fun.

The most recent departures tell a similar story. Scott McTominay is in that Serie A title fight with Napoli where he may yet be joined by a familiar face in Garnacho.

We don’t really even want to start on how lucky Mason Greenwood is for so many reasons to find himself swanning around the upper reaches of Ligue 1 right now.

Jadon Sancho is clearly better off at Chelsea than he was at United; Aaron Wan Bissaka is at West Ham, but let’s just skate past that quickly. And even then, the league table insists it’s not really a backward step.

Many things have died away at Manchester United over the last 10 or 11 years. But one we’d perhaps not truly considered until now is the idea of United as an end in itself for players.

This was a club that was enough for almost anyone. Great players who started here finished here. Great players who arrived here finished here. And if they didn’t it was someone else’s choice and their career had still peaked with United.

United is no longer a final destination, but just another club, just another staging post in a career that can lead on to bigger and better things elsewhere regardless of whether your time at United is good, bad or indifferent.

United appear set to rush through multiple departures before the transfer window shuts. For the likes of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, whose careers are on an inevitable end-of-the-line slide, their time at United will not be considered their career highlight.

And for those in the early or middle stages of their career there will be expectation now rather than hope that this is also the case for them.

Because Manchester United are now just another football club.

Ten Hag turned down chance to sign incredible talent who is now at Man City – report

Manchester United were supposedly the first top club to show interest in Abdukodir Khusanov, who has now joined Manchester City.

United strengthened their backline ahead of the season by signing Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro. In particular, the Red Devils earned plenty of plaudits for winning the transfer race for Yoro.

The ex-Lille sensation was one of the most sought-after centre-backs in Europe last summer. The likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain all wanted to sign him after the Frenchman established himself as one of the best defenders in Ligue 1.

United eventually signed the 19-year-old, who has enjoyed a promising start to life in Manchester.

Khusanov has now become the latest defensive prodigy to leave France for Manchester, joining City from Lens in a deal worth €40m this month.

Interestingly, it has emerged that had the Red Devils acted more wisely, they could have secured Khusanov’s services as well.

According to the talented central defender’s agent, Gairat Khasbiullin, United were “the first to show interest” in his client.

In an interview with Championat (via Sport Witness), Khasbiullin revealed: “In May 2023, United scout Nicolas Chenalli was in Argentina for the U20 World Cup. After the second match of Uzbekistan at the tournament, he found my contact and wanted to meet.”

However, the then-United manager Erik ten Hag had different plans.

“The scout made a detailed report, but coach Ten Hag said that the defender was not quite ready to help the team at that time,” Khasbiullin added.

Apart from his underwhelming tactics, the Dutch coach also frustrated many fans with his transfer decisions, and not exploring the possibility of signing Khusanov is far from his worst recruitment move.

Ten Hag spent more than £120m on signing Casemiro and Antony and now both players aren’t part of Amorim’s first-team plans. The ex-Ajax winger is very close to joining Real Betis on loan and the veteran midfielder has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Despite publicly revealing his desire to leave Manchester United last month, an exit this January has yet to materialise for Marcus Rashford.

There has been links with AC Milan, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund but so far, none of the teams have managed to come up with an acceptable offer.

The Serie A giants have moved on to other targets while as per reports, despite the German side’s interest, the Mancunian dreams of a move to the Catalan giants.

However, so far Barca have failed to make room for the versatile forward and the Englishman’s future remains in limbo with the academy graduate spotted back in United training for the time being.

New landing spot opens up for Rashford

He has already informed the Spanish giants that if they do not hurry up, he will look at alternate options as he is desperate to play again, having not made a first-team appearance since that infamous interview dropped.

A shock suitor in the form of Besiktas has arrived on the scene as per Turkish journalist Gökmen Ozcan who has claimed that new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is “personally involved” in trying to sign the United No 10.

“INFORMATION: Beşiktaş Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s crazy transfer target: Marcus Rashford.” the journalist wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“The Norwegian coach is personally involved in the signing of the 27-year-old left winger, with whom he worked together at Manchester United.”

                Ole interested in reunion

Solskjaer had revealed that he has yet to talk with any of his former players but after his debut win, the Norwegian must have realised what his team needs and with Rashford available, a move for him cannot be ruled out.

The former United coach did work with Rashford during his three-year spell in charge of the Old Trafford side and managed to bring the best out of the England international on a consistent basis.

The 27-year-old had scored 55 times in 135 games under the Treble winner including breaking the double-digit mark for goals scored two seasons in a row.

Whether the Englishman will move to Turkiye remains to be seen but if Amorim continues to snub him and Barca declare their inability to bring him in, a sensational reunion is certainly not beyond the realms of imagination.

Man Utd: Rashford made ‘crazy transfer target’ as ‘personally involved ‘ ex-manager eyes shock reunion

According to reports, former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing a shock reunion with England international Marcus Rashford.

Rashford and Solskjaer previously worked together at Old Trafford and a reunion at Turkish giants Besiktas has been mooted.

51-year-old Solskjaer was out of work for over three years after exiting Man Utd towards the end of 2024. Earlier this month, he made his return to management as Besiktas appointed the former Norway international.

Solskjaer has enjoyed a dream start at Besiktas as his side hammered Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the Europa League on Wednesday night.

With the January transfer window open, it was inevitably only going to be a matter of time before Solskjaer’s Besiktas was linked with a raid on Man Utd.

READ: Man Utd breaking news: Marcus Rashford turns up for work again

Solskjaer has already addressed this topic, praising two “very good” Man Utd players.

He said: “I’ve come from Manchester United, so there will be transfer news like this. Casemiro and Rashford are very good players, but I haven’t had any contact with them.”

These comments appear to have fuelled nonsensical speculation linking Rashford with an unrealistic move to Besiktas.

A report from journalist Gokmen Ozcan claims Rashford is a “crazy transfer target” for Besiktas. He claimed: “Besiktas coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s crazy transfer target: Marcus Rashford.

“The Norwegian coach is personally involved in the signing of the 27-year-old left winger, with whom he worked together at Manchester United.”

Rashford has a couple of more realistic transfer options with FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund among the clubs mooted as possible destinations.

However, German journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that the Bundesliga outfit are ‘not hopeful’ of signing the England international.

He explained: “Borussia Dortmund are currently not hopeful of signing Marcus #Rashford, while FC Barcelona remain in the race.

“However, #BVB see a potential opportunity if negotiations for Rashford continue to drag on and a chance arises closer to Deadline Day on February 3rd.

“This would depend on Manchester United deciding to offload the player and the transfer package becoming more affordable. #MUFC.”

As for Barcelona, a report from Sky Sports on Wednesday afternoon claimed a move for Rashford this month is ‘looking increasingly difficult’.

‘Sky Sports News understands a deal for Rashford to leave Manchester United in this window is looking increasingly difficult.

‘Dortmund will continue to push but the finances remain a big issue as they would require United to contribute a substantial percentage of his wages.

‘United are understood to be relaxed over the situation. The feeling is that talk of a move has been driven by Rashford.

Alvaro Carreras wants to know Manchester United’s transfer plans as the Red Devils hold a buy-back option to sign him, as per reports.

United’s decision to part ways with Carreras in the winter window of 2024 received plenty of backlash as not only did Erik ten Hag not give the Spaniard a fair chance to show his talents at the senior level but the club also handed Benfica an option to turn his loan move into a permanent transfer.

Ever since his move to Portugal, the 21-year-old left-back has enjoyed an impressive rise, attracting Europe’s biggest clubs’ attention with his exploits.

Benfica acted swiftly and signed the Spain U21 international permanently in the summer, handing him a five-year contract.

His contract includes a €50 million buyout clause. However, United ensured they would have some advantage by adding a €20m buy-back option in their favour.

Carreras once again made headlines this week after delivering a brilliant performance against Barcelona in the Champions League. The attacking full-back registered an assist in his side’s 5-4 defeat on Tuesday night.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for the Benfica star but A Bola (via Sport Witness) claim the La Liga giants will find it difficult to trigger his release clause.

Accordingly, Benfica aren’t worried about interest from Spain. Instead, the focus is on United.

It is claimed “the defender, his family, agent, Benfica and his suitors” want to know whether United intend to sign their former academy star by exercising the buy-back clause.

Further, Carreras wants to understand Ruben Amorim’s stance as it would allow him to plan his own future better. Recently, the Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the young talent is an “option” for the Mancunian outfit to strengthen their flank.

The ex-United star could be an ideal fit for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system as he possesses positional awareness and creative instincts needed to play as a wing-back.

However, at this point, it seems the Portuguese gaffer has set his sights on Lecce full-back Patrick Dorgu.

Borussia Dortmund are “currently not hopeful” of signing Marcus Rashford but view the pressure of the impending February 3 deadline as a “potential opportunity” to strike a deal with Manchester United, despite Barcelona’s continued interest in the English forward.

Rashford, 27, has not featured for the Red Devils since his explosive interview declaring his wish for a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford, after being dropped by Ruben Amorim for the Manchester Derby.

United are open to the academy graduate’s departure this month with acceptance that a loan is the only realistic move, due to 27-year-old’s exorbitant wage packet and poor form.

AC Milan had emerged as an early frontrunner for Rashford with the player’s brother and agent travelling to Italy to negotiate a deal. However, the Serie A side have confirmed the loan of Manchester City fullback Kyle Walker, thus ruling out the possibility of a deal for another English player this month.

Barcelona are also interested in loaning Rashford with the 27-year-old reported to prefer a move to Camp Nou out of all remaining suitors, including Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

However, the Spanish giant are restricted financially and unable to generate the funds required to sign Rashford without first selling. One potential option to facilitate this had been the departure of Eric Garcia, but The Athletic report the defender is “going nowhere” after Hansi Flick intervened to prevent his sale.

Dortmund were another side who expressed a strong interest in Rashford, with the potential of a deal being struck to the one which saw Jadon Sancho re-join Die Schwarzgelben last year in a similar scenario to his former teammate.

However, the German club were unable to meet the financial demands involved without United agreeing to compromise further. This, combined with Rashford’s preference appearing to be Barcelona, has led to Dortmund officials being “currently not hopeful” of a deal, Florian Plettenberg (Sky Sports Germany) reveals.

🚨⚫️🟡 Borussia Dortmund are currently not hopeful of signing Marcus #Rashford, while FC Barcelona remain in the race.

However, #BVB see a potential opportunity if negotiations for Rashford continue to drag on and a chance arises closer to Deadline Day on February 3rd.

Tweet: “Borussia Dortmund are currently not hopeful of signing Marcus #Rashford, while FC Barcelona remain in the race. However, #BVB see a potential opportunity if negotiations for Rashford continue to drag on and a chance arises closer to Deadline Day on February 3rd.

This would depend on Manchester United deciding to offload the player and the transfer package becoming more affordable.”

However, the ongoing difficulties Barcelona are facing in generating the funds to target Rashford presents an opportunity for Dortmund to exploit.

Plettenberg contends if “negotiations for Rashford continue to drag on” there may be a “potential opportunity” for the Bundesliga side to put the pressure on United to sanction a last-minute departure for the wantaway forward at a reduced price.

Rashford was spotted back in first-team training yesterday as Amorim put his players through their preparations for tonight’s Europa League match against Rangers. The timing of this reintroduction, with only ten days left of the January window, could suggest United are laying the groundwork for a path back from the exit door for the 27-year-old.

Equally, it could be something of a negotiating tactic to convince Barcelona and Dortmund to bid soon or run the risk of Rashford no longer being available to sign on loan.

Regardless, this remains a saga which looks set to run until the very end of the transfer window.
