Tactical analysis: United will dominate Rangers if Amorim makes these two key tweaks

Tonight, Manchester United host Rangers at Old Trafford in what will be their second to last match of the UEFA Europa League group stage.

Sitting in seventh place on the Europa League table with 12 points in six matches, Man United find themselves on the verge of securing automatic qualification for the knockout rounds. Still, with Rangers in eighth position and trailing Rubem Amorim’s squad by a single point, a win will provide a major boost to his team’s hopes of progressing without needing to contest in the playoffs.

Rangers have been in fine form as of late, scoring 15 goals and conceding five in their last five matches in all competitions.

While their opponents have been of a much lower calibre than United, for example, Fraserburgh F.C. and St. Johnstone, such results still show the Scottish side’s great team chemistry – something that United often lacks.

On the continental stage, Rangers have held their own. They managed to hold on for a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, who dumped Amorim’s team out of the Carabao Cup, while also defeating INEOS’s other team, OGC Nice, 4-1 away from home.

Given Rangers’ inferior status and United’s potential performance ceiling, it seems as if the match is United’s to lose, particularly in front of the Old Trafford crowd.

In their match against Spurs, Rangers showed quick bursts of attacking action, both in the minutes leading up to the half-time break and the early stages of the second half when Hamza Igamane grabbed the opener. They also ramped up their offensive efforts near the end of the match after Spurs grabbed an equaliser.

What this shows is that Rangers are a team that battles for the full 90 minutes, never taking their foot off the gas. Despite only having 41% possession, Rangers took a total of 15 shots, eclipsing Spurs’ 12 attempts on goal.

Rangers were particularly impressive against Nice, showing that same high work rate and refusing to let up even after taking the lead. It was this resilience that saw them grab three goals in just 13 minutes leading up to the half-time break.

Yet again, they had less possession than their opponents (46% to 54%) yet still took 14 shots, showing that they are a side that puts in a massive attacking effort whenever they grab a hold of the ball.

This could pose a major challenge to United, whose defence has been leaking goals nonstop.

As we saw in the 3-1 loss to Brighton last weekend, defending from set pieces remains a massive concern. Had it not been for a VAR intervention, the visitors would have been 4-1 winners.

That being said, all of Brighton’s awarded goals came from quick counter-attacks whereby the United defence appeared slow and dishevelled, struggling to stay on their marks.

This defensive vulnerability could prove to be the issue that stands in the way of victory this evening.

Attacking has not been a problem under Ruben Amorim. Despite an earlier goal drought, United have improved in front of goal, scoring seven times in the past five matches in all competitions, which included elite opponents including Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle United.

Still, defence remains a massive concern.

With Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Leny Yoro predicted to lead the back line and Tyrell Malacia and Diogo Dalot seemingly poised to start as wing-backs, optimal concentration will be necessary.

Whether Maguire and Yoro start or Matthijs De Ligt leads the defence, they will need to make use of their height to win those crucial aerial battles and at least begin to change United’s fortunes when defending set pieces.

Casemiro would certainly be a key asset at the middle of the park, with his physicality and ability to defend, yet an alternative such as Manuel Ugarte could also prove highly competent in this regard. Whoever starts, it will be vital for United to dominate the midfield while remaining alert at the back, especially given Rangers’ knack for breaking quickly and taking lots of shots even when they see less of the ball.

Ultimately, by ensuring that his back three improve in their aerial game while also slotting in a powerful central midfielder in support, Amorim could ensure that his team have a solid advantage against a team that is used to inferior opposition.

A triumph would certainly provide the United fanbase a reason to celebrate, particularly after the club’s turbulent run of games recently. Of course, progression in the Europa League will also be warmly received.

“Music to my ears”: Former stalwart pinpoints reason why she had to leave United Women

Former Manchester United Women star Hayley Ladd has claimed she needed to leave the club to play a bigger part in the league.

The Welsh international moved to Everton at the start of the month and made her debut against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Ladd joined United in 2019 and made 110 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals in total.

Speaking to the BBC about the next step in her career, she pinpointed why she felt she needed to leave Leigh Sports Village.

“At United it became obvious that my chances were becoming limited in terms of getting any decent playing time.”

“I wanted to make more of a meaningful impact in the league. It’s the way it was and it spurred me on to look at other options.”

The 31 year old commented that it was an “easy decision” to join Everton and it was like “music to my ears” when speaking to the Toffees’ boss Brian Sorensen.

She also stated that getting minutes ahead of Wales’ impressive qualification for Euro 2025 was another major cause for her seeking a move away from United.

Whilst being excited about her new challenge, Ladd took the opportunity to heap praise on United’s fans.

Describing what it is like to play as the home team at the Leigh Sports Village she opined, “they (United fans) were my first sort of experience of real women’s football fans. I just thought ‘this is amazing’.”

“The support is just relentless. I’ve never known anything like it. It doesn’t waver. It’s so resilient. It’s been such an amazing experience playing with that fanbase.”

The veteran also stated that she always enjoyed a strong connection between herself and the supporters and that is always a “meaningful” experience for a footballer.

Man Utd: Rashford blow with January transfer unlikely amid Barcelona’s ‘contract’ issues

Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford is unlikely to complete a move to Barcelona during the January transfer window, says one report.

The 27-year-old has been a bit-part player this season when compared to recent years, starting just 12 league games in total.

He has amassed seven goals and three assists in 24 games in all competitions but Ruben Amorim has been hesitant to use the academy graduate since arriving at the club.

His future at the club seems uncertain with a trio of clubs linked with a move that include Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and AC Milan.

According to Sky Sports News, Rashford’s preferred move to Barcelona is currently in traction as we await a formal offer from the Catalan club.

The report states: ‘Marcus Rashford’s representatives met with Barcelona executives in Lisbon on Tuesday ahead of the Catalan club’s game with Benfica.

‘As revealed by Sky Sports News last week, Barcelona is Rashford’s preferred destination if he is to leave Manchester United in this transfer window.’

On top of those reports, Borussia Dortmund had enquired over potential loan terms while AC Milan turned their attention to securing Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.

United are said to be relaxed about the situation given that it is unlikely that a move will be agreed with Barcelona this month.

        Deco comments on Barcelona’s position

Barca’s sporting director Deco commented on their financial situation amid the ongoing links with Rashford.

“We are dealing with the issue of [financial] fair-play. In the final days, if the team can be strengthened, we will try, but as of today there is nothing.

“The priority is the renewals of the important players in the squad, and then we could focus on one or two reinforcements, but it is not something that the coach has asked of us either.

“We’re fully focused on new contracts now… then, if we can bring in other reinforcements, that would always be welcome.

“The coach [Hans-Dieter Flick] is happy with the squad we have, so any future decisions will be made later,” he added.

        Man United transfer news

Outside of Rashford, there is plenty of potential movement being reported. One player linked with an exit is Alejandro Garnacho who is wanted by Chelsea.

However, the latest news suggests that he is likely to remain at the club as they expected to snub any official approach from the London club despite their inquiries.

If not the Middle East, the MLS could offer an alternative destination as United hope to get his £350k-a-week wages off the books but he may well be set to remain until the summer.

Man Utd legend drops ‘unacceptable’ slam with one star singled out

Ex-Manchester United striker Louis Saha did not hold back when asked about the current situation at his former club, singling out Andre Onana after a difficult run of games.

Ruben Amorim has endured a torrid start to his tenure as Man United boss. He has won six of his 15 games but lost seven, including four of his six league games.

A brief intermission against Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Southampton gave fans hope of a potential turnaround.

Still, their most recent defeat to Brighton led Amorim to label this United squad the ‘worst’ in the club’s history and the players have been under intense scrutiny.

Onana was caught out in the loss at Old Trafford against Brighton, spilling an easy cross straight into the path of Georginio Rutter for an easy tap-in, ensuring United fell to a 3-1 defeat.

The former Inter Milan keeper has endured a rocky spell since arriving in 2023, showcasing plenty of ability with his feet.

Despite that, he has been caught out on several occasions, with the error against Brighton placing him joint third in the Premier League for errors leading to a goal – and the total number of mistakes across all competitions since 2023 is a steep figure.

          Louis Saha slams former club

Saha believes the whole squad needs to be threatened with competition as no player should be guaranteed to start after recent form – identifying Onana’s performances as ‘unacceptable’.

In an interview with Paddy Power Saha said, “There is a need for every player at Manchester United – apart from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo – to feel threatened with competition.

“No one has shown that they deserve anything in the next game. The manager can challenge and criticise them because it’s not good enough.

“The backbone of this team, from the back four to the centre forwards, it’s so important that they don’t make mistakes.

“Unless you can guarantee that you’re not going to make mistakes, you should not be considered as a guaranteed starter in any position. None of those players should be guaranteed anything.

“If you don’t have a confident goalkeeper he has to be challenged. Those performances are unacceptable, it’s not normal!”

          Amorim’s latest team comments

Speaking ahead of their clash with Rangers in the Europa League, Amorim was quizzed over his recent comments about the United squad –  as he failed to shy away from the issues at hand.

“First of all, I want to talk about that [his comment about this Manchester United possibly being the worst-ever side in the club’s history],” Amorim said.

“I was talking more for myself than from my players, because you have to find out a coach that starts a job and loses seven games in the first 10. So it’s more for me, I was talking more about me than the players.”

After Rangers, United face a difficult away trip to Fulham in the league before rounding off their Europa League campaign against Romanian side FCSB.

Why United’s transfer window is in absolute shambles amid INEOS cash crisis – The Athletic

Manchester United are finding themselves in an increasingly precarious financial position.

While the January transfer window is open, the club has been unable to finalise any significant signings due to a lack of readily available funds and the need to comply with regulations.

At first glance, United’s financial situation appears promising but the problem is far worse than we thought, as explained brilliantly by The Athletic’s Mark Critchley.

The club’s accounts from September reveal a healthy bank balance of £149.6m, its highest since the Covid-19 pandemic.

This was bolstered further in December by a £79m injection from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, part of a £300m commitment tied to his 28.9% ownership stake.

Despite these figures, the cash has either been borrowed or allocated for infrastructure projects, leaving little flexibility for player acquisitions.

United’s cash reserves have largely come from loans or Ratcliffe’s investment, which is primarily earmarked for much-needed upgrades to Old Trafford and the Carrington training ground.

Additionally, the club is burdened by £319m in outstanding transfer fee instalments, £154m of which is due within a year.

This reliance on deferred payments for player transfers has been a long-standing issue under the Glazers’ ownership.

“They’re living a Champions League lifestyle on Europa League income,” says football finance expert Kieran Maguire. With five consecutive years of operating losses, United have struggled to balance their books.

United’s £74m cash balance at the end of last season was insufficient for summer transfers, prompting a £200m drawdown from their £300m credit facility.

This revolving credit, akin to a credit card, enabled £219m in spending on players such as Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte, balanced partially by the sales of Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Cash reserves fell from £308m in 2019 to £52m in 2020. Compounding the issue, the Glazers continued to extract dividends, totalling £166m over the past decade, while interest payments on their leveraged buyout have reached £790m since 2005.

Despite these challenges, United has spent a net £1.3 billion on transfers over the last decade without achieving sustained success, particularly in the Champions League.

Cost-cutting and player sales have emerged as immediate solutions. High earners like Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, as well as promising academy players Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, have been linked with exits.

Selling academy-trained players offers near-pure profit in accounting terms, providing a short-term financial boost.

Ultimately, United’s failure to align its spending with on-pitch success has created a precarious financial situation. While there are measures in place to stabilize finances, the club’s days of unchecked spending may be over as it faces the reality of its financial constraints.

United’s European nemesis made last-ditch attempt to swoop for Antony before he chose Betis – report

Villarreal tried to snatch Manchester United’s Antony with a last-gasp effort but he chose to go to Real Betis.

United are keen to rid their squad of deadwood so they can fund their own January and summer transfer plans.

Numerous attacking options such as Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

Antony has also made massive progress in a transfer away from the club and it was reported earlier in the week that Real Betis had reached an agreement with the player and the English team to sign him on loan.

The deal will see no loan fee and the Andalusian club will only pay a part of his wages, but they will face penalties if he doesn’t play ten or more games, either as a starter or in a full second half.

Journalist Alvaro Jiménez on El Chiringuito TV claimed that another Spanish side tried to swoop in and steal the Brazilian out of Betis’ clutches.

Speaking to the TV show he said, “Villarreal also wanted him and offered more, but the Brazilian wants to play for Betis. They are also looking for a striker in the winter market.”

              — El Chiringuito TV (@elchiringuitotv) January 21, 2025

The choice of Betis over Villarreal is an interesting one as the yellow submarine are currently fifth in La Liga.

Meanwhile, Los Verdiblancos are currently in 12th place in the league and eight points behind their rivals.

Antony may have been attracted however to the promise of European football as Betis have qualified for the next round of the Conference League, while Villarreal have no European football to look forward to this season.

United will be hoping that the Brazilian can rediscover something of his old Ajax form and pick his broken confidence off the floor with the loan deal.

While the club will not be able to regain anything like the price they paid for him, they will be hoping that a five-month spell in Spain will boost his price and encourage someone to make a bid for the winger in the summer window.

United star aiming for big night on landmark appearance in Europe

Manchester United welcome Rangers to Old Trafford where victory would allow the home side to take a big step towards qualification for the last 16 of the tournament.

The Red Devils have played the Glaswegian club four times in European history.

They have won three of the games and drawn one of those matches and Rangers have not scored a goal.

The last match between the two was a feisty affair at Ibrox in 2010 when a Wayne Rooney penalty settled the match in a 1-0 victory in the Champions League.

Here are three storylines to look forward to.

United’s unbeaten home record versus Scottish opposition

Tonight’s game will be only the sixth time in history that a Scottish side has visited Old Trafford in a competitive match.

“The Reds are unbeaten in these games, and this is the third occasion when the Gers have provided the opposition.”

United drew 2-2 with Dundee United in 1984 and 0-0 with Rangers in 2010. They defeated the Gers 3-0 in 2003.

The home side have also beaten Rangers’ great rivals Celtic 3-2 in 2006 and 3-0 in 2008.

Amad Diallo and Jack Butland face former clubs

United’s star player this season has undoubtedly been Amad Diallo and he played for tonight’s rivals on loan in 2022.

The Ivorian played just 13 games and scored 3 goals for the Glasgow-based club.

Nonetheless, it was an important learning curve as it became a platform for him to enjoy a very successful loan at Sunderland in the 2022-2023 season.

Jack Butland signed for United in the January window of 2023 on loan but never played a competitive game for the Red Devils.

He has found a new lease of life north of the border and will hope to have a big say on the outcome of the match tonight.

Bruno Fernandes’ 50th Europa League appearance

“This game could be Bruno Fernandes’ 50th appearance in the Europa League.”

The United midfielder has 37 goals and assists combined in the competition (20 goals, 17 assists) for both Sporting Lisbon and his current club.

This is second only to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (34 goals, six assists) in Europa League history.

If Ruben Amorim’s side goes far in this year’s competition he will surely back himself to get the four-goal contributions he needs to overtake the Gabonese attacker.

Video: Derby day agony as United Women’s cup dreams over with tight 1-2 loss to City

Manchester United Women were knocked out of the League Cup quarter-finals by their rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils came out on top in the derby with a fantastic 4-2 win at the Etihad in the league at the weekend but could not repeat the trick last night in the cup.

United made numerous changes from the side that played on Sunday but were edged in a tight affair at the Leigh Sports Village.

The first chance of the game arrived in the first half when City’s Aoba Fujino went on a bombing run down the right-hand side and fired a shot at Phallon Tullis-Joyce who easily collected the ball.

City soon found themselves in front when some nice passing football eventually led to Lily Murphy weaving past the United defence and playing a low cross that was skilfully turned in by Laura Coombs in the 12th minute to give the visitors the perfect start.

The Citizens were well on top now and Coombs found herself through on goal shortly after United were lucky to see her fire her effort well over the bar.

Marc Skinner’s side eventually forced some sort of response when Rachel Williams was first to react to a ricochet in the box but hooked an effort just right off the City goal.

In the 35th minute, United found an equaliser when Melvine Malard’s cross wasn’t dealt with by the visitor and Millie Turner controlled the ball expertly and emphatically fired her shot into the roof of the net.

With their tails up and the home crowd behind them, United poured forward and Simi Awujo saw her long-range effort fizz wide of the goal.

When it looked like the scores would be level at half-time, Murphy produced a moment of magic on the left-hand side as she danced through a couple of defenders and produced a wonderful curling effort that beat Tullis-Joyce into the bottom left-hand corner and off the post, to give the away side the lead once again.

The second half was a much less open affair with many fewer shots on goal but Elisabeth Terland shunned a great chance to equalise when good pressing allowed her to shoot from inside the box but she snatched at the opportunity and sent the ball well over the bar when she should have probably hit the target.

The home side huffed and puffed but could not find a way past a resolute City defence and will have to wait another year to try and win the League Cup.

Skinner’s side is going strong in the league in third place and is still in the FA Cup, so there is still much left to play for in this campaign.

The Women’s team will next be in action on Sunday evening when they play Brighton and Hove Albion.

Man Utd targeted the 32-year-old during the 2022 summer transfer window after they missed out on Frenkie de Jong. He enjoyed a strong debut season, but he’s struggled over the past 18+ months and has fallen in the pecking order under Ruben Amorim.

The Premier League giants have not got value out of the Casemiro deal and they are finding it difficult to offload the Brazil international, who is under contract until 2026.

The Saudi Pro League has consistently been mooted as a potential destination for the defensive midfielder, but a move to the Middle East is yet to come to fruition.

Casemiro is known to have a strong relationship with former Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo after their spells together at Old Trafford and Real Madrid.

It’s been suggested that they could reunite at Al Nassr as a report in Portugal claims Ronaldo is ‘insisting’ on the signing after he decided to pen an extraordinary new contract.

However, a report from GiveMeSport claims Casemiro ‘could have a chance to move to the MLS’ as this is a new ‘serious prospect’ for the veteran midfielder.

‘Casemiro is Manchester United’s top earner and although there was talk of him earning over £600,000-a-week with a move to Saudi Arabia, a mega payday in the Middle East has not come to fruition.

‘There is certainly a chance he could make such a move this year but, equally, some sources believe Major League Soccer might even emerge as a serious prospect as the “world-class” Brazilian is starting to receive proposals from across the Atlantic.

‘Manchester United have always suspected this would be the case and have not been pushing for him to leave in January, and have not worked hard to find a replacement either. While they would have been open to an exit to ease the strain on their wage bill, there has always been an acceptance that the £350,000-a-week star would likely remain on the payroll until the summer.’

The report also claims Man Utd are ‘facing frustration’ in their pursuit of £60m-rated Wolves star Matheus Cunha.

‘Our sources indicate that the Red Devils would be keen to join in the pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, but such a move feels extremely difficult.

‘The West Midlands outfit have maintained a firm stance that the Brazilian forward is not for sale, but his new contract has not yet been announced and both Nottingham Forest and Arsenal have made progress in their attempts to sway him away this month.

‘Manchester United have been monitoring Cunha’s situation, but with plans to pursue him in the summer. In order to land him in this window, they would need exits to happen very quickly so that finances were in place and, at the moment, such constraints seem too difficult to overcome.’

3-4-3: six changes for United as Amorim cracks the whip after Brighton fiasco – prediction

Ruben Amorim has a dilemma in picking his Manchester United side to face Glasgow Rangers tonight in the Europa League.

Having put in a terrible performance against Brighton on Sunday, United need to get their confidence back. It is also important that they make no mistake and get three points to help their quest for automatic qualification into the last 16 of the tournament.

On the other hand, it should be a relatively easy home tie and a chance to rest some tired legs before a difficult away match at Fulham on Sunday.

Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have had a lot of minutes recently and could be among those to be given the night off. Lisandro Martinez could be reinstated on the left side of defence, with Harry Maguire in the middle and Leny Yoro on the right.

Victor Lindelof is another option but is not match fit. Jonny Evans and Luke Shaw are still not available.

Diogo Dalot could replace Mazraoui as right wing back with Tyrell Malacia coming in as left wing back.

In central midfield, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo could also be rested. Bruno Fernandes might get another game as an eight and he could be accompanied by Casemiro, an experienced campaigner in Europe.

Christian Eriksen and Toby Collyer are other options, but Mason Mount is still injured.

Up front, Amad probably also should be rested but with Antony looking bound for Real Betis on loan, we think the Ivorian will have to play again for lack of alternatives.

Alejandro Garnacho could play on the left side of the attack.

Josh Zirkzee is edging ahead of Rasmus Hojlund as the preferred centre forward but perhaps he, too, will be rested. If Hojlund does well he could keep his place but if he does not, it will confirm to Amorim to play Zirkzee on Sunday.

Finally, we are tipping Altay Bayindir to start in goal. Andre Onana had a dreadful game on Sunday and Bayindir was United’s man of the match against Arsenal. He has been picked for the domestic cup games so it stands to reason that he should be allowed another run out in the Europa.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted starting XI for tonight’s 8pm kick-off:
