Man Utd ‘reach’ £27m with signing ‘very close’ as Amorim drops ‘major hint’ with sanctioned exit

According to reports, Manchester United are ‘very close’ to signing Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu after Ruben Amorim dropped a ‘major hint’.

The Red Devils are yet to make a January signing as they have been focused on outgoings, but they are looking to sign Dorgu from Serie A outfit Lecce.

New head coach Amorim has experienced severe difficulties at Old Trafford since replacing Erik ten Hag as he’s implemented his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

United’s squad is not fully equipped to cope with Amorim’s demands. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have been used out of position as left wing-backs.

Amorim has not been able to rely on Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw amid their injury woes, so his priority is to sign a new left wing-back.

Man Utd have been linked with several potential options but 20-year-old Dorgu – who has four goal involvements in his 20 Serie A appearances this season – has emerged as their top target.

On Friday afternoon, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed the Red Devils have ‘made an offer to Lecce’.

‘Manchester United have tabled a €30million (£25.3m; $31.4m) bid for Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu.

‘The Athletic reported on January 22 that the two clubs were €10m apart in negotiations for the Denmark international, who Lecce priced at €40m while United indicated a willingness to go to €30m.

‘United’s director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves met with Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino in Milan.

‘Figures at United are hopeful that a deal will be agreed and if one is, Dorgu would become the first senior arrival at Old Trafford under head coach Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese has been keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.’

A report in Italy claims Man Utd have actually ‘reached’ 32 million euros (£27m) with their bid for Dorgu, who ‘has an agreement’ with the Premier League giants.

Meanwhile, a Spanish outlet claims Antony’s imminent loan move to Real Betis is a ‘major hint’ that the defender is ‘very close’ to joining the Red Devils.

It’s claimed that Amorim would not let Antony leave unless a replacement is secured, even though the head coach has used the £86m flop as a right wing-back.

Regarding Antony, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided some details on his loan to Real Betis on Friday. He said: “Here we go confirmed: Antony travels to Sevilla tonight to join Real Betis from Man United!

“Green light after documents approved, loan move until June with NO buy-back clause; salary shared.”

He later added: “Antony has arrived in Spain tonight [Friday] and he will be in Sevilla in the morning [Saturday] for medical tests as a new Real Betis player.

“Loan move from United also includes penalty clauses in case he doesn’t play a certain number of games at Betis.”

Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are reportedly close to reaching a full agreement for the transfer of Karim Adeyemi.

According to Fabrizio Romano, talks between the two clubs have advanced significantly, with the deal expected to be finalised at a fee of around €40 million, lower than the initially speculated €50 million.

🚨🔵 Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are now close to reaching full agreement for Karim Adeyemi.

The package will be less than reported €50m, as talks are now advanced for fee around €40m.

      — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) January 24, 2025

The negotiations are expected to resume after this weekend’s matches, as both clubs are focused on their upcoming fixtures.

This development could significantly impact the transfer landscape, particularly given Napoli’s previous interest in Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine winger was considered a priority target for Napoli in January as a potential replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who joined Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

However, Napoli’s agreement with Adeyemi, a player who plays in a similar position to Garnacho, suggests that they might have shifted their focus.

This could open the door for other clubs to pursue Garnacho, with Chelsea reportedly among the parties interested in securing his signature.

Chelsea, meanwhile, might view this as an opportunity to intensify their efforts to sign the United youngster, as Napoli’s interest wanes.

Garnacho has emerged as a dynamic presence for United since his first-team debut under former manager Erik ten Hag.

His youthful exuberance and raw aggression on the pitch gave the team a much-needed spark, often shifting momentum in United’s favour during critical moments.

However, like many young talents, Garnacho has exhibited inconsistencies in his performances and areas for technical improvement.

Despite these challenges, fans are eager to see him develop further within the squad.

That said, United’s precarious financial situation may force difficult decisions.

If the club needs to balance the books, Garnacho’s sale could be considered, even if reluctantly, as his talent will attract significant interest and a sizeable transfer fee.

Man Utd ‘serious’ for Chelsea ‘swap’ to sign £67m star as ‘exit’ depends on two conditions

According to reports, Manchester United have ‘seriously’ entered the race to sign Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku as they are ‘considering a swap deal’.

Chelsea paid around £52m to sign Nkunku during the 2023 summer transfer window and he’s endured a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge.

The France international missed most of his debut season after suffering a knee injury and has only made three Premier League starts this term despite impressing in cup competitions.

Nkunku has been heavily linked with a move elsewhere this month. Bayern Munich have been mooted as a possible destination, but Man Utd are also ‘considering’ a move.

The Red Devils have been focused on outgoings this month, but they are lacking in attacking areas and would likely action an addition if the right opportunity arises.

United have opened the door to selling one or two academy products to balance the books and Alejandro Garnacho looks the most likely to leave before the January window closes.

Serie A giants Napoli and Chelsea are in the race to sign Garnacho, who could join the Premier League giants in a ‘swap deal’ involving Nkunku.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has revealed that the Chelsea forward has become a ‘serious’ option for Man Utd.

He tweeted: “Understand that Manchester United have now seriously entered the race for Christopher #Nkunku.

“Man Utd are in direct contact with Chelsea. United have a chance with Nkunku because, even today, there have been no developments with FC Bayern. But Max Eberl is still keen on Nkunku.”

He added: “Manchester United and Chelsea are considering a swap: Between Alejandro Garnacho and Christopher Nkunku.

“There is no final decision on this yet, but this swap is an idea that has been discussed.”

Journalist Ben Jacobs has also provided an update on Nkunku, whose potential ‘exit’ from Chelsea is dependent on two factors.

“Chelsea value Christopher Nkunku highly and are not actively looking to sell him. If an exit happens, it would be down to the player requesting to leave coupled with an offer £10-15m above the £52m paid, likely with add-ons on top,” Jacobs tweeted.

“Still too early to tell if #CFC and #MUFC would consider seriously engaging over Nkunku in a separate deal to Alejandro Garnacho. Some clarity likely over the weekend.

“Both clubs value each player around the same £60m+ number, although Chelsea’s Nkunku valuation is slightly higher based on figures Manchester United already quoted to Napoli for Garnacho.”

Arsenal ‘picked over Man Utd, Chelsea’ with Arteta ‘closing in’ on top target amid ‘better news’ reveal

According to reports, Arsenal have been ‘picked over Manchester United and Chelsea’ as they have ‘good news’ regarding their pursuit of a new striker.

The Gunners earmarked Sesko as a leading target during last year’s summer transfer window as they were in the market for a new striker.

Despite this, Arsenal missed out on the Slovenia international, who decided to commit himself to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig for another year.

Arsenal decided against signing an alternative and this leaves them short on attacking options. With Gabriel Jesus injured, Kai Havertz is Mikel Arteta’s only centre-forward option.

It has been reported that Jesus’ injury could force the Gunners to ‘bring forward transfer plans’ and they are actively scouring the market for a new forward this month.

Speaking on Friday, head coach Arteta admitted they are “working on” signings before the transfer window closes.

“We lost two very important players in Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus,” he said. “We lack goals, we lack people and we lack options. It’s clear.

“If we can get the right player that’s why we are actively looking at it. We are working on it, yes.”

Asked if he will have to wait until the summer to sign a striker, Arteta replied: “You have certain resources, the ability to recruit certain players, develop certain players, use certain players from the academy.

“It’s a balance of what we can do.”

Sesko is one of the best young strikers in Europe and he’s been in sensational form this season, grabbing 14 goals and three assists in his 26 appearances.

Earlier this week, a report claimed Arsenal are ‘closing in’ on Sesko as Arteta is making a ‘big push’ for this transfer ‘now’.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has provided a “better news” update on Sesko, who has “picked Arsenal over Man Utd and Chelsea”.

He said: “The good news for Arsenal is that they have a number of concrete summer targets so there is a logic of escalating the pursuit of some of them for January.

“It’s whether they’re feasible, these targets are difficult to get in the market.

“With Benjamin Sesko, some contact has been made with Leipzig to understand whether anything is possible.

“There’s no release cause in his new contract and the player is very keen on his own development to make sure he doesn’t rush a move.

“Even though Leipzig are out of the Champions League, they’re pushing in the cup and to qualify again next season.

“It’s not impossible but it’s difficult and they’ll want to protect the relationship with Leipzig if they’re to revisit it in the summer.

“The better news for Arsenal is that last summer when the project was pitched from Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United, Sesko picked Arsenal and then made a secondary choice of whether it was now or to stay at Leipzig.

“It’s going to take a crazy offer or be impossible in January because Leipzig’s position is very firm.”

United starlet puts in record-breaking display on big European night

Manchester United’s Toby Collyer broke a 20 year old record in his outstanding display versus Rangers on Thursday night.

The 21 year old made his debut this season in the Community Shield penalty loss to Manchester City in August.

Sadly, he picked up an injury in November and it appeared that he would need to head out on loan to get valuable first team minutes for his professional development.

Nonetheless, the former Brighton and Hove Albion youngster had an impressive cameo in the FA Cup victory over Arsenal earlier this month and Ruben Amorim suggested that his performance had given him a selection headache.

As a result, he got the nod to start ahead of Casemiro in the Europa League and put in a very solid display on the night.

Speaking after the game, Collyer claimed he was desperate for more starts after his fine performance in his first taste of European action under the famous Old Trafford lights.

OptaJoe stats also highlighted the impact that he made on the match.

“Collyer became the first Manchester United midfielder on record (since 2003-04) to record 50+ passes on their first appearance at Old Trafford in major European competition.”

He “also maintained a pass accuracy of at least 94%”, making 48 out of his 51 passes.

94.1% – Toby Collyer tonight became the first Manchester United midfielder on record (since 2003-04) to record 50+ passes on their first appearance at Old Trafford in major European competition while also maintaining a pass accuracy of at least 94% (48/51 – 94.1%). — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 23, 2025

The England Under 20 year old is known for his physicality and his ability to get around the pitch, which certainly suits Amorim’s vision of what his midfielders must do.

Nonetheless, if Collyer can also develop a tight passing game, which his numbers versus the Gers suggest, he could certainly turn himself into a valuable option in the club’s midfield department.

His progress is even more important in the context that Casemiro and Christian Eriksen will almost certainly leave this year and United lack funds to spend lavishly on many replacements.

Official: United starlet with 4 first team appearances completes loan move to Walsall

Manchester United U21s striker Ethan Wheatley has joined Walsall on loan until the end of the season.

The news was announced on United’s official website this morning.

It should be an excellent opportunity for the 19 year old, with Walsall flying high at the top of League Two, 12 points ahead of Crewe in second, with a game in hand.

Obviously, a team doing well should provide plenty of chances for a striker to get in the action and show what he can do.

Wheatley has already played four times for the senior team at Old Trafford, with former manager Erik ten Hag introducing him to the first team squad toward the end of last season.

This was on the back of a good run in the Under 18s last season, in which he “scored a double in the U18 Premier League Cup Final, eight goals in seven games in the league campaign at that age group, and the opening goal of the national league final at Stamford Bridge,” the club’s site notes.

Those performances earned him the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

He played thirteen minutes across three games in the first XI, but did not get on the scoresheet.

With him seemingly on the cusp of being named in this season’s senior squad, he was given a chance to impress in the pre-season tour of the USA. However, his performances there and since have largely disappointed.

Wheatley also played 5 minutes of the League Cup match against Leicester City this season but looked off the pace.

His regression has been unfortunate, especially given the struggles of the first team’s incumbent strikers, Rasmus Hojlund and Josh Zirkzee.

It has allowed younger starlets such as Gabriele Biancheri and Chido Obi to make up ground quickly and establish themselves in the Under 21s.

The Saddlers, coincidentally managed by Mat Sadler, should provide a great opportunity for the starlet to get back on track and fulfil the potential he showed last season.

Man Utd blow as Rashford rejects ‘whopping offer’ with ‘favourites’ named amid PL transfer ‘real possibility’

According to reports, Marcus Rashford has rejected a ‘whopping offer’ to leave Manchester United with six clubs mooted as potential destinations.

Rashford is looking to leave Man Utd as he’s announced that he is “ready” for a new challenge elsewhere.

The Red Devils are struggling to offload the wantaway forward as his huge salary and poor form are transfer obstacles for interested clubs.

Several European sides have been mentioned as possible destinations for Rashford, but it looks increasingly likely that he may need to stick around at Man Utd until the summer.

Earlier this week, a report claimed Rashford’s proposed move to Borussia Dortmund has ‘failed’, while AC Milan have decided to sign Man City defender Kyle Walker instead of the forward.

Spanish giants Barcelona are also in the running to sign Rashford, though their financial woes have complicated talks between the two clubs. West Ham have been brought up as a left-field option, but this has become a ‘real possibility’.

Saudi Pro League clubs have also been monitoring Rashford’s situation, but Caught Offside are reporting that he has ‘turned down a whopping offer’ to move to the Middle East.

‘CaughtOffside sources understand that what’s behind United’s inherent need to get Rashford off the books is that they are in danger of a points deduction due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and want the player’s reported £300,000 salary wiped off the books.

‘Although a transfer is therefore somewhat necessary, it’s far from inevitable at this stage. That’s because sources have also advanced to CaughtOffside that Rashford has turned down a whopping £35m per year offer from the Saudi Pro League.

‘To put that into perspective, it would more than double his current Man United wages, but he would seemingly prefer to remain in the background at Old Trafford than as one of the standard bearers in Saudi Arabia.’

It is also noted that Barcelona ‘remain favourites’ to sign Rashford as an ‘option is gaining traction’.

‘Rashford’s brother and manager wants the player to go to Barcelona.

‘Barcelona’s sporting director Deco met with Rashford’s team to discuss a possible transfer, and sources also understand that a lowering of his demands to encourage a transfer to the Spanish giants is an option that is gaining traction.

‘Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia could also make way, though both are understood to want to stay at Barca despite a lack of minutes.

Video: Marcus Rashford’s dream move to Barcelona in tatters for these two reasons

FC Barcelona’s inability to get rid of Eric Garcia and Ansu Fati has seemingly killed their chances of landing Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

The United attacker has not played for the club since mid-December and he has been linked to numerous European giants such as Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.

It has been stated that Rashford’s preference has always been the Spanish club and he has reportedly agreed personal terms on a loan move to the Catalan capital.

Due to strict financial rules however, Barcelona have been unable to act on their interest in the winger as they need to sell to free up space in their squad to give the greenlight to such a deal.

It was originally thought that Ronald Araujo’s sale to Juventus could fund the deal but the Uruguayan has now renewed his contract with the club.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has claimed that it is highly unlikely that Barcelona will be able to make space in their squad to complete a deal for Rashford before the end of the January window.

Speaking on his YouTube channel he asserted, “there were two other players, Eric Garcia and Ansu Fati that had been invited to go away if they wanted to.”

“Eric Garcia liked the idea of going to Girona but as of today, Girona have told Barcelona, ‘sorry, we cannot match the sort of finances that you want’.”

This is due to the fact that Girona could not pay his wages and a loan fee.

Therefore, “Eric Garcia is going to stay, that is where we are at the moment.”

Ansu Fati has been left out of the last three squads and is “clearly” not in Barcelona coach Hansi Flick’s plans but even “Ansu Fati going wouldn’t be enough for Marcus Rashford”.

Due to the forward’s lack of interest in leaving La Blaugrana, “it doesn’t look like Marcus Rashford is going to come to Barcelona as we stand.”

“I’m not sure that there are going to be any more twists in this story as those players do not want to leave Barcelona, there is no gap for Marcus Rashford.”

Therefore, with just over a week left of the window, Rashford’s potential exit options seem to be dwindling by the day.

“Deceived”: Former referees’ chief makes clear judgement on De Ligt’s disallowed goal vs Rangers

Manchester United were right to feel aggrieved because their opening goal on Thursday night against Rangers was chalked off.

The Red Devils needed an extra-time winner from Bruno Fernandes to seal a dramatic 2-1 win in the Europa League, giving them a fantastic chance of finishing in the top eight to secure automatic passage to the last 16 of the tournament.

United felt they had made a good start when Matthijs de Ligt headed in an Amad corner after 24 minutes to put the Red Devils’ ahead and ease the nerves around Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, the referee, Erik Lambrechts, blew the whistle quite rapidly and denied the Dutchman his second goal for the club because of a supposed push from Leny Yoro on Rangers’ player Robin Propper in the lead up.

On closer inspection, the “foul” seemed very suspect and numerous fans were in total disbelief that VAR looked at the decision and did not overturn it.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official, Keith Hackett, has told Football Insider that the decision to disallow Matthijs de Ligt’s goal was the wrong one, and “VAR should have intervened.”

Commenting on the incident Hackett stated, “the referee will be rather annoyed that when he disallowed the De Ligt’s goal he was deceived by the defender who threw himself to the ground. There was no push and VAR should have intervened and advised the referee to go to the screen.”

Although Hackett did not mention it, replays of the incident even show that Yoro himself was being fouled as a defender tugged on the arm of his shirt.

The former refereeing boss asserted that had he gone to the screen, it is very probable that the goal would have been overturned.

It is one in a long list of injustices United fans have felt that their team has suffered this season at the hands of referees.

At the end of September, Bruno Fernandes was harshly sent off in the first half against Tottenham Hotspur that killed the game as a contest. The red was eventually overturned but it did not help the team in their 0-3 loss to the Lilywhites.

More recently, United felt extremely hard done by when Kai Havertz went down softly to win a penalty from the slightest of touches from Harry Maguire in the FA Cup tie earlier this month.

Luckily Altay Bayindir went on to save the penalty and United would win the contest but it is just another example of how Ruben Amorim’s side feel they have been unfairly treated this season when it has come to key refereeing decisions.

Man Utd ‘stupid’ transfer to ‘create bigger issue’ with Man City FFP expulsion to ‘bankrupt Premier League’

The Mailbox reckons Manchester United would be ‘stupid’ to sell Alejandro Garnacho, while expulsion for Man City could ‘bankrupt the Premier League’.

Selling Garnacho is a ‘stupid idea’…
When the news first broke that United would consider offers for Garnacho and Mainoo I wrote in explaining that the Argentinians sale, though a darling of the Stretford End, could be justifiable given the need for a more suitable player in his position and what would be a large fee.

The closer we get to the reality of him being sold, the more I’m convinced it’s a stupid idea. Despite what that unpleasant canine might say the funds received wont magically solve United’s problems and would in fact create a bigger issue in the short term.

Garnacho is fundamentally United’s best attacking player and his absence from the team over the last month has significantly stunted the attacking output. There are of course other factors which contribute to this but his numbers don’t lie. He is top for shots per 90 and xg per 90 in the squad and his box efficiency, 7.75 penalty areas touches along with 3.75 shots per 90, rank him amongst the best in Europe approaching similar numbers to Musiala, Kane, Haaland, and Yamal.

Amorim likes his two number 10’s to have different roles, one is the playmaker and the other a runner. Though Garnacho doesn’t suit the runner role exactly (his passing in generally not great) his is still the closest and most dangerous player we have for this job.

Selling him, whilst good for the balance sheet and enabling structural purchases would leave a massive hole in the attack that could not be filled till the summer. None of the remaining players, bar a Rashford redemption, could come close to being the running 10 and even then it would not be as effective.

I really hope they reconsider this, we’re having enough trouble with scoring as it is and the team looks so much more dangerous and lively when he’s on the pitch.

READ: Rashford and Garnacho the latest to fail upwards from Man Utd?

                      Dearest Mailbox,

Just another thought from another Manchester United fan on the potential sale of Garnacho: yes please. The bizarre financial rules around selling ‘home-grown’ (or poached as a near-adult in this case) make it a good move at pretty much any price, as it’ll allow some essential strengthening of the squad.

On top of that, getting 50 million Euros Childs for him is good business. Against Southampton he missed a sitter, and last night against Rangers he missed another sitter. He regularly runs down dead ends. And he’s more than once been involved in some pass-agg social media arseholery. That’s a problem when you’ve got a limited squad who will need to be committed to working together to get results.

On the plus side, he looks like a young Steven Tyler, but that’s hard to use to the team’s advantage in a game of football.

                      ‘Stop haggling’
                      Hi there,

Badwolf thinks Manchester United should stop holding out for the fee they want for Garnacho. I disagree. If you look at the Big Six clubs who sell fringe players well, which are Liverpool, Man City and (whatever the other aspects of their transfer business) Chelsea, they clearly set out a value for a player, and hold out for it. There are lots of scenarios where Liverpool, in particular, have lost out on transfer fees with the player leaving on a free, because their value is their value. The thinking seems to be that, even if you lose out on one player, the message it sends, which is that you’re not a patsy to be steamrollered, is important. Accepting an under-value bid for a promising young player because you really need the money to spend in the same window is, I’d argue, exactly the sort of short-term thinking that has got Manchester United into the mess they’re in now.

Which, of course, I’m all for. Carry on.

                      Arteta thoughts…
                      Dear F365,

Reading conflicting views about Arteta got me thinking about one of my favourite metrics for whether managers are doing a good job. Do I, as the fan of a rival team (Liverpool), want them to stay in post or get moved on?

For example, Pep may be having a tough year, but I will be glad when he’s gone. I would never put it past him to find an answer to his problems and turn City into a behemoth again.

On the flip side, I have yet to encounter a post-Fergie manager of Man United who I wanted to see fired. It was a sad day when ETH was given his marching orders. Go well, sweet prince.

Arteta, for all his faults, is another one I will be delighted to see ousted. He’s made Arsenal into a proper team again that you fear facing, which did not seem terribly likely during the late-Wenger period.

Maybe he won’t win the Prem or UCL with them, but this feels like a “careful what you wish for” scenario for Arsenal fans bemoaning his limitations far more so than with the previous incumbents.

Sorry to disappoint Man City’s haters…
It always amuses me how people go on about the 115/130 charges City have, like it’s a huge deal. Everyone banters about them being kicked down to League Two or whatever.

But let’s look at it logically…

Will they get done for every charge? No.

Will they get done for at least half/maybe most? Maybe/Possibly.

Will they be kicked out of the league? No/maybe in an extreme case.

And why? Because without their money, power, big names, constantly getting into Europe (which gains money English football), losing City out of the league will kinda bankrupt the Premier League and effectively make it a worse league as there’ll be no competition for Liverpool anymore. It’ll be a farmers league like Scotland, France or Germany.

Realistically, they’ll be looking at losing points, being banned from Europe for 1 or maybe 2 years at a push and a big fine. Worst case scenario is they get kicked to the Championship, which they’ll then walk and come back up with 15 games to spare.

Sorry boys but your wet dream of bankrupting City and non-league-ing them isn’t gonna happen.

                      You heard it here first!!
                      Matt Tee.

                      How have Man City coped?!
It’s hard to tell satire from sincerity in the modern world, so I’m not sure if Paul K, London was serious or on the wind up with his mail about Man City’s Champions League fixtures.

Imagine having to play the European heavyweights of Sparta Praha, Feyenoord, Club Brugge and Bratislava. How have they coped? It’s a miracle they are even in contention to qualify. Then on top of that, you play perma-flops PSG who are also struggling to qualify, 5th placed in Serie A Juventus, and then you have 2 decent teams in Inter and Sporting CP.

In fact, the good thing about this format is that you can actually see how good these teams are. So City have played the teams currently 29th,11th, 20th, 35th, 22nd,17th, 4th and 23rd. An average of 20th. What a brutal draw for them.

Liverpool meanwhile got games against: Real Madrid, AC Milan, RB Leipzig, Bologna, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Girona, LOSC Lille and PSV Eindhoven. I’m struggling to see how that is easier, and they’ve won 7 from 7.

Indeed, Opta did post-draw analysis and concluded that Liverpool had the second hardest draw of any team. As for Man City? Theirs was the second easiest, with only ones having a nicer time of things being the boys in Brest (quiet at the back).

Again, not sure if it was satire or not, but to argue Man City had a tough draw is pretty hard to prove with any actual evidence.

Another unsolicited opinion on Man Utd getting relegated…
Snaps for Ashmundo (14 more points is the first target)’s thoughtful email from Wednesday, which I only read today and thought was pretty spot-on. Manchester United’s squad is indeed poorly balanced and undermotivated (not to mention overpaid). It’s why I used to call Erik ten Hag a dead man walking: there was never anything he could really do to fix them, particularly as his eye for a player was so fallible. I expect he’ll find some success in his next job, which will be at a club with a solid scouting setup and Director of Football. Germany or Austria, perhaps. One could imagine him at Red Bull.

Ashmundo wasn’t the first to accurately observe in the last few days that ManU’s squad was built to counterattack. It’s certainly no accident that the players Amorim is the most down on and eager to sell on — Antony, Rashford and Garnacho (and perhaps by now Onana) — are, or are meant to be, useful in that sort of game. Though none have good pressing instincts. Whether possession-based 3-4-3 is the path to success in the EPL is a moot point. The board seems to think it’ll be successful, though.

On my travels, I got to have dinner last night with my elder son, now a semi-regular Mailbox reader. I mentioned a recent letter (I’m sorry, I can’t remember the author or day) suggesting that relegation might be a blessing for ManU. It’s rather unlikely to actually happen, but I agreed on a lot of levels. They’d get rid of a lot of expensive wages at the expense of a painful-but-bearable loss in terms of player prices. Their fans would have their expectations reset a bit. And they’d be certain to bounce back.

If I were on the board and had voted to hire him, I’d be arguing the club should publicly state that they trust Amorim to rebuild a squad capable of sustained and repeated success, and if the club has to be relegated to make it happen, well, they’d come back better. Indeed, they’d probably benefit from a few years of operating on a Championship-plus budget and scrubbing those losses off the PSR books before returning to the EPL with a bang, a seasoned Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo, some financial elbow room, and a host of hungry former youth players, some perhaps blooded with EPL loans.

Of course, all this does rather beg the question of Amorim’s success. To me, his interviews suggest that he’s confidently walking the path he and the board agreed to when he was hired. For Manchester United supporters, I imagine it comes down to how much they trust him.

Man Utd pair playing ‘cat and mouse’
                      – Good to win [for Man Utd vs Rangers] despite the scrappy performance. Keeps us in good stead heading into the final game and in control of automatic qualification to the next round.

                      – On the disallowed goal if the push was considered an offence then why’s their striker’s push on Maguire for their goal not given as a foul. In hindsight either of those were not fouls but within the game how one is given and the other isn’t. Again one was inside the box and the other wasn’t and hence the disparity in the officiating.

                      – The argument of an academy player leaving aside, purely in footballing terms and considering the season we’ve had it will really be a travesty if Garnacho leaves during this window. Accept that we need funds but he finally seems to be returning to form and with our deficiencies on the Left it will be sad to see him go.

                      – Zirkzee’s confidence looks improved but boy do we need to bolster our striking options. Him and Hojlund are always playing cat and mouse on who will be the least efficient. This needs addressing this window else we’ll keep struggling for goals.

                      – Talking about goals, we have partly improved on creating chances but how are we missing all these glorious opportunities. Maguire and Ugarte could and should’ve done better.

                      – On to Fulham and away from OT, I feel that there is massive pressure for this team to perform at home and playing on the front foot and creating opportunities and they keep failing miserably. But we seem to be better away from Home, will this Fulham fixture vindicate that or is our poor run going to continue. Fingers crossed.
                      Regards, Vasanthan
