“Pay him even more…”: Casemiro’s choice on his future at United will enrage the fanbase – report

Casemiro has “turned down a move” to AS Roma as the Manchester United midfielder is holding out for a switch to the Saudi Pro League, according to the Times.

Paul Hirst (The Times) reveals Casemiro has rejected advances from Italy where Roma manager Claudio Ranieri is believed to be keen to add the experienced Brazilian to his squad.

The 32-year-old star, who turns 33 next week, has not played for United since the Reds midfield – consisting of Casemiro and fellow 32-year-old Christian Eriksen – was blown apart by Newcastle in a 2-0 demolition at Old Trafford on December 30.

Ruben Amorim explained Casemiro’s continued absence was a “selection choice”, rather than one stemming from any type of injury concern. “Sometimes it’s a system fit, sometimes it’s the player’s [form],” United’s head coach revealed.

“We know that Casemiro nowadays has other qualities. He is intelligent, understands the game, knows where the ball is going to be … but we are in a league that — and I can even see this in the European competitions — there is a big intensity difference, therefore I feel our team needs players with high intensity and sometimes we don’t have them.”

“We all know Casemiro’s qualities and everything he has won, so I have nothing to add to that. It’s just a selection choice,” the Portuguese coach concluded.

Amorim has consistently selected 21-year-old Toby Collyer ahead of Casemiro with United actively looking to sell the Brazilian this month, even if on loan.

Roma are reported to be interested in a permanent move for the former Real Madrid star, but it would require them to sell existing midfielder Leandro Paredes to make space in Pellegrini’s squad.

However, Hirst contends Casemiro has “turned down” these advances by the Serie A club as he waits for an offer from Saudi Arabia to materialise, “…where the wealthiest clubs would be able to pay him even more than his present wage of £350,000 a week” at Old Trafford.

This response by the Brazilian will enrage the fan base as much as it is likely to anger executives at the club.

Casemiro is being offered the chance to recapture his dwindling career at a leading club in a major European league in one of the most desirable capital cities in the continent. Furthermore, the slower pace of Serie A lends itself perfectly to the 32-year-old’s declining physical levels, increasing the chances of success in comparison to the break neck speed of football in England.

Yet Casemiro is actively turning down this option of a European renaissance in favour of chasing more money in a league which the vast majority of the footballing word pay little to no attention to.

If United had been able to agree an exit for the Brazilian, the money saved in his wages alone for the rest of the season would total in excess of £7 million. At a time when the club is facing acute FFP pressure, this saving would be priceless. But, no.

Rather, Casemiro is content to sit on the bench for six months, banking £350,000 a week to watch the end of his career from the side lines, enabling the 32-year-old to then seal his footballing death for even more money in the Middle East.

    Modern football in a nutshell.

“He has everything”: United veteran showers praise on 19yo wonderkid after difficult start to life at new club

Manchester United pulled off quite the coup last summer when they beat off competition from Real Madrid to secure the services of highly-rated Leny Yoro from Lille.

After an impressive debut in pre-season, the Frenchman suffered a cruel injury blow that kept him out until December. The 19-year-old had to patient before making his eventual competitive debut in December against Arsenal.

Ruben Amorim has started to afford him more and more game-time recently with the France U23 international starting three of the last four games in all competitions.

Arguably his best night came against the same opposition in the FA Cup as he defended with bravery despite the team being down to 10 men.

      Difficult early spell

He then proceeded to step forward to calmly dispatch his spot-kick to hand United the advantage right after Kai Havertz had fluffed his lines.

Results as a whole have been far from good with the defence leaking goals with pressure at an all-time high as claimed by defensive partner Matthijs de Ligt.

Yoro had a nightmare when he came up against Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana but instead of taking the young star out of the firing line, Amorim chose to play him for 83 minutes, showing the faith that he has in the French star.

And veteran star Harry Maguire has now come out and praised his young teammate’s impact and even went as far as to claim that Yoro has all the attributes to become a superstar for a club moving forward.

      Maguire believes in Yoro

The former club captain also claimed that this difficult initial period will stand the young defender in good stead moving forward. And the Englishman will know all about overcoming a difficult spell to become even better.

“Obviously, Leny’s a young boy with all the attributes to go on to be an elite centre-back. He has everything that you want in a modern-day centre-back at the moment,” the England international told the club website.

“He needs guiding through. Obviously, this is a tough, tough period for the club. But it would be a great learning curve for him and he’ll learn a lot from it. And I have no doubts he’s going to go on and have a great career for this club.”

Yoro will have another chance to make a huge impact for his new club when the Red Devils take on FCSB in the final group game of the Europa League on Thursday with qualification for the Round of 16 on the line.

United take drastic step to improve players’ fitness with Amorim enraged by “body-fat levels” – report

United take drastic step to improve players’ fitness with Amorim enraged by “body-fat levels” – report

Manchester United are set to welcome one of the “world’s leading athletic coaches” to Carrington as a “consultant” to help improve the squad’s long-standing issues with fitness and conditioning, according to the Times.

American coach Harry Marra will link up with the Red Devils to share his “vast knowledge and experience” with the fitness and sports science staff at the club.

Marra, described by The Times as possessing an “almost guru-like status” within sport, is one of the most successful coaches in the history of athletics.

The report reveals, the New York-born expert “is best known for guiding his fellow American, Ashton Eaton, to two Olympic decathlon titles in 2012 and 2016, as well as a number of other elite multi-event specialists.”

“[Marra] enjoyed huge success with Eaton, guiding him to two world records and five outdoor and indoor world titles as well as those two Olympic golds. He also coached Eaton’s wife, Brianne Theisen-Eaton, to an Olympic bronze medal in Rio in the heptathlon.

“The 78-year-old was named World Athletics coach of the year after the Rio Games and has also served as the speed and fitness consultant for the Major League Baseball team San Francisco Giants.”

Marra was even “ranked in the top ten track and field coaches of all time” last year, underscoring how renowned his  coaching ability and fitness principles are throughout the world of athletics.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is believed to have “expressed concern” over the physical state of his squad when he arrived from Sporting CP during the last international break.

The Times reveals the Portuguese coach even “cited issues with body-fat levels among some of his stars” with this issue over poor conditioning and work rate extending back through multiple managers at Old Trafford now.

The previous incumbent of the role, Erik ten Hag, who Amorim took over from in November, was obsessed with raising the fitness levels of the United players; to, ultimately, no avail.

A source at Old Trafford states, “I don’t think under Erik the team could have done any more running in training”, despite the team often looking as short on fitness as they were on ideas. “There would be all kinds of intense running drills,” another source close to the club adds.

This lacklustre physical state was also present during Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer and Jose Mourinho’s reign. Indeed, when Ralf Rangnick – the experienced German coach credited as the ‘Godfather‘ of gegenpressen – took over from Solskjaer on an interim bases, he was said to be “shocked” by the United players’ physical condition.

Evidently, there is an issue which goes deeper than the current group of players at Old Trafford; and, perhaps, the implementation of new principles from one of the world’s leading authorities in Marra may be the antidote.

The Times contend it is common for United to “occasionally invite leading practitioners from different areas and sports to their Carrington training base for knowledge-sharing purposes and professional development.”

“This season the club have hosted a range of expert-led events covering key areas such as medical and injury management, movement mechanics, nutrition and strength training. These sessions have involved professionals from within and outside the football industry, with the aim of growing the knowledge and expertise of the United staff.”

But Marra’s legendary status within sport has piqued interest in what would otherwise be normal practice at Old Trafford. Whether the American coach will be able to help Amorim succeed where his predecessors have tried and failed, remains to be seen.

Ferdinand claims current Man Utd star is part of WhatsApp group ‘hammering’ Amorim’s side

Ferdinand claims current Man Utd star is part of WhatsApp group ‘hammering’ Amorim’s side

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand has revealed that one of Ruben Amorim’s current Red Devils squad is part of a WhatsApp group that “hammers” the team on a regular basis.

Amorim’s side have been having a terrible season with the Portuguese head coach struggling to reverse their fortunes since replacing Erik ten Hag in November.

Man Utd are currently 12th in the Premier League table after beating Fulham 1-0 on Sunday for just their eighth win in 23 Premier League matches this term.

The Red Devils seem to be making some progress over January transfer arrivals with Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu reportedly heading to England for a medical.

Man Utd have already moved Antony on loan to Real Betis, while Tyrell Malacia, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and others have been linked with transfers before the deadline.

It’s quite chaotic at Man Utd at the moment and Ferdinand has revealed that Jonny Evans is part of a WhatsApp group that constantly “hammers” the current Red Devils squad.

Speaking to England and Man Utd women’s star Ella Toone on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “We hammer each other. Active… it’s active constantly.

“Wazza was the last person who spoke in there. It’s called ‘Band of Brothers’. I can’t tell you the next bit, it won’t make the cut.

“It’s just hammering the United team. Look, lads are just hammering them through the game. ‘He’s not good enough’. I love it. It just keeps me connected to the lads.”

Toone replied: “You’re busy in it, aren’t you? You’re on it – every other message!”

Ferdinand added: “You’ve got the younger lads like Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, and then there’s Nani and Anderson.

“You know who joined recently? Edwin van der Sar. I think he’s going to delete himself soon because the chat ain’t for him.

“Who else is in there? Jonny Evans is in there, who’s currently playing. Some of the stuff that goes on… Patrice Evra gets mullered, hammered all the time. We hammer each other.”

Evans is yet to appear under Amorim and his Man Utd team-mate Rashford looks to be on his way out of Old Trafford if he can find the right move in January after his relationship with the manager soured.

Amorim called out Rashford after their win over Fulham for a lack of application in training, he told reporters: “It’s the same situation for every player. If you do the maximum, if you do the right things – we can use every player. You can see it today [Sunday] on the bench – we miss a little bit of pace to go, to change the game, to move some pieces, but I prefer [it] like that.

“I will put [goalkeeping coach Jorge] Vital [on the bench] before I put a player that doesn’t give the maximum every day so I will not change that.”

Man Utd are exploring a possible swap deal for Chelsea forward Joao Felix with Alejandro Garnacho going the other way, according to reports.

The Red Devils are looking to do some business in the January transfer window but the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules are reportedly hindering their pursuit of big targets in the winter.

Lecce star Patrick Dorgu is their main target for Ruben Amorim’s left wing-back position, while they are also hoping to bring in an attacker before the transfer deadline.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed on Friday night that Man Utd are ‘considering a swap’ deal for Chelsea attacker Christopher Nkunku with Garnacho potentially going in the other direction.

And, on Sunday, Plettenberg issued an update on a possible swap deal with both Nkunku and Garnacho ‘open’ to the potential transfer.

Plettenberg wrote on X: ‘As exclusively reported yesterday, there have been initial concrete ideas in recent days among all parties involved about a potential swap between Alejandro #Garnacho and Christopher #Nkunku. Nothing is advanced yet, but the topic has been explored. Both clubs are now in direct contact, and both players are open to a move. #MUFC #CFC Nkunku also has an agreement with Bayern.’

But there have been few updates since then and now GiveMeSport claim that Man Utd are demanding progress on a potential Garnacho departure in the ‘next 48 hours’ or he will stay at Old Trafford.

It is understood that Man Utd boss Amorim is ‘fearful that he will have no time to secure a replacement’ if the Chelsea and Napoli target leaves late in the window.

            GiveMeSport say:

‘Manchester United have decided they will only entertain sanctioning Garnacho’s exit if Chelsea or fellow suitors Napoli head to the negotiating table with a formal proposal in the next 48 hours, according to GMS sources, as Amorim is desperate to avoid a deadline day saga and stopping short of forcing him out.’

            The report adds:

‘GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United do not want uncertainty over Garnacho’s future to drag beyond Friday as it would give Amorim limited opportunities to recruit a replacement, meaning Chelsea and Napoli are in a race against time if they want to acquire his services.’

It is understood that as well as Nkunku, Chelsea forward Felix is now also a potential swap option for Garnacho as Man Utd study all possibilities.

‘Manchester United have been locked in talks with influential figures at Chelsea and expected a bid to be made last weekend, GMS sources have learned, but an offer was not forthcoming and avenues of communication have remained open between Napoli and Garnacho’s representatives even though there are doubts that they are willing to surpass £50million.

‘GMS sources have been told that Manchester United have been looking to scope out who could move in the opposite direction in a cash-plus-player deal if they allow Garnacho to join Chelsea, with Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix being possibilities despite the duo gaining interest from elsewhere as the deadline edges closer.’

Man Utd legend Gary Neville is struggling to understand why the Red Devils would entertain a swap deal for Nkunku.

Neville said earlier this week: “I don’t get it for United. Nkunku’s hardly kicked a ball, he obviously had the injury when he first came in but he’s struggled to get going at Chelsea.

“I’m not saying Garnacho is the best player in the world and that he needs to stay at Manchester United. If they get good money for him then okay that might work.

“But to swap him for Nkunku, I have to say that doesn’t feel like I move I would do if I was Manchester United. I can see why you would do it if you were Chelsea.”

“It would be a permanent transfer:” Roma intent on signing United midfielder if one crucial condition is met – report

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro looks likely to remain at the club in the near term after being linked with a move to AS Roma.

Yesterday, The Peoples Person acknowledged that Roma have reportedly expressed an interest in Casemiro, asking for information on the midfielder.

Suddenly, it appears as if the Brazilian’s move might be off the cards.

This morning, CaughtOffside reported: “Sources understand that Claudio Ranieri has indicated that he wants Casemiro to play for him because of his incredible experience and for the characteristics he exhibits on the pitch.”

“It would be a permanent transfer rather than a loan move too; however, for this transfer to take place, Leandro Paredes will have to leave the Giallorossi.”

According to the report, there is little interest from other clubs for Paredes, thereby obstructing Roma’s move for Casemiro despite their alleged interest.

Roma still appear to be the most likely buyer for Casemiro amid an array of transfer links.

While Al-Nassr were believed to be interested in the midfielder, they appear less likely to make a move for Casemiro given their fresh €60m deal for Victor Boniface.

Still, former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears keen on Casemiro, reportedly looking to add him to Beşiktaş’s ranks.

An Old Trafford exit would be understandable for Casemiro, who has fallen down the pecking order under current United boss Rubem Amorim.

Although Amorim has insisted that there is no bad blood between him and Casemiro, the midfielder is clearly not a key player in his starting 11.

Casemiro’s last United appearance came in the 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in late December, showing that he has since lost relevance under Amorim.

While an undoubtedly talented player, a move away from United may be what is necessary for Casemiro to revive his career as well as Amorim as he seeks to build a team for the future.

Elite attacking starlet issues ‘come-get-me-plea’ to United for dramatic last-minute swoop – report

Manchester United have been “offered the chance” to sign Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel with representatives of the French starlet “working hard” to strike an exit from the Allianz Arena, according to TBR Football.

Tel, 19, is one of the most highly-rated attacking prospects in Europe, having joined Bayern from Ligue 1 side Rennes in a £25 million deal in July 2022 when he was just 17.

However, since arriving in Germany, Tel has seen his game-time limited by the presence of world-class strikers Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane, who replaced the Polish international a year after the 26-year-old left for Barcelona.

And while this is understandable for a youngster in Tel’s position, even with the talent the Frenchman possesses, the lack of first-team minutes have reportedly pushed the 19-year-old to breaking point.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Tel’s choice has been influenced by Vincent Kompany’s decision to keep him on the bench for the last three Bayern games. This has incensed the forward, who reportedly instructed his representatives to find a new club before the end of the January transfer window next week.

And the Red Devils, who hold a long-term admiration for Tel, are one club who has been “contacted”, though the report by TBR Football also reveals a number of clubs throughout Europe have been alerted to the 19-year-old’s availability.

The report states, “Now, sources close to the situation have provided TBR Football with an update on Mathys Tel – as Arsenal and Tottenham are contacted along with Manchester United.”

“However, sources add that contact has also been made with clubs in Germany and Italy – with Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and AC Milan invited to try and sign Tel.”

A report relayed by The Peoples Person this morning revealed United were considering “entering the race” for Tel in the event that a forward – either Alejandro Garnacho or Marcus Rashford – are sold.

The fact that representatives of Tel have actively sought out the Red Devils as a potential destination for the 19-year-old will encourage Old Trafford officials a deal can be struck ahead of their domestic and continental rivals.

Tel’s skillset, which has seen the French youngster dubbed the ‘next Thierry Henry’, is versatile enough to be able to play the LAM or CF roles in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

The existing strikers, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, are in dismal form for the Reds and the club would reportedly be open to either player’s departure if a suitable offer arrived.

Similarly, United are keen for Rashford to depart on loan, with Brazilian winger Antony having already swapped England for Spain to join Real Betis in a six-month loan deal. And a late move by Napoli or Chelsea cannot be ruled out for Garnacho with United reluctantly open to the 20-year-old’s departure if a suitable offer – worth in the region of £60 million – is tabled.

This makes the prospect of Tel a welcome addition for a team who endured big difficulties in front of goal this season. And United’s misfiring forwards offer the Frenchman a clear path towards the first-team at Old Trafford, as any attacker would back themselves to start ahead of Hojlund or Zirkzee at present.

Bild report Tel has “made it clear” he does not want to join Chelsea as the competition in the Blues’ forward line is too crowed. This gives the Red Devils a clear advantage of their Premier League rival in a pursuit of the 19-year-old.

United must not waste it as the options to upgrade the forward areas are limited heading into the final days of the winter window.

12 clearances, 4 ground duels won: United loanee puts in rock solid performance at heart of defence

Numerous Manchester United youngsters were in action last night in the football league.

Accrington Stanley’s Sonny Aljofree had the best of the showings as he received a rating of 7.5 from Sofascore for his performance in a 0-0 draw against Cheltenham Town.

As well as helping his side keep a clean sheet, he made an impressive 12 clearances in the match.

He also made four tackles and one interception as he helped keep the visitors at bay.

Aljofree won four out of his six ground duels and two out of his four aerial battles, as he was his usual combative sense in the defence.

The 20 year old also connected with six out of his 11 long ball attempts.

In the same match, Ethan Williams came off the bench for Cheltenham and had 29 minutes of action, where he was given a rating of 6.7.

The winger could have little impact against a tight Accrington defence as he had zero attempts at goal and only completed five out of his 10 pass attempts.

He was also wasteful in possession, losing it 10 times despite having only 18 touches of the ball. The youngster will need time to adapt to senior football in League Two.

Joe Hugill was also in action for Carlisle United as they narrowly lost 1-0 to Notts County.

The striker was heavily involved in the action as he had three shots on target and two that went wide off the mark but could not find his first goal for the club.

He was inches away from doing so as he had an effort that rebounded off the post and whilst he will be unhappy to miss such big chances, he will hope more will soon fall his way in his side’s next match.

Hugill was also good on the ball as he made 78% of his passes during the match and he won 100% of his aerial battles.
Ethan Wheatley also got a start for Walsall but they lost 2-0 away to Fleetwood Town.

He played 68 minutes of the match before being subbed off and had one shot on target and one shot off it.

Wheatley won two out of his three ground battles but was bullied in the air, coming out on top in just one out of his seven aerial duels.

“Amorim is desperate…”: United manager fears losing key star in last-minute raid by PL rival – report

Manchester United will only entertain offers for Alejandaro Garnacho “over the course of the next 48 hours” due to head coach Ruben Amorim’s concerns there will not be enough time to sign a replacement if a last-minute exit is struck.

A report by Give Me Sport reveals the Red Devils are setting a deadline of Friday night for any approaches for Garnacho with Premier League rival Chelsea and Serie A leaders Napoli both expressing an interest in the 20-year-old winger this month.

Napoli have seen an official bid rejected as it fell far short of United’s valuation of Garnacho – thought to be in the region of €70 million. Chelsea, by contrast, have not tabled an offer for the Argentinian international but the London club are believed to be more willing to meet United’s demands than their Italian rival.

Old Trafford officials are reluctantly open to Garnacho’s departure due to the club’s precarious financial situation, driven by the pressures of the Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR).

Garnacho’s status as an academy player means his potential sale would constitute a treasure trove from a PSR perspective, with United able to spend multiple times more the fee they receive for the winger.

And with a number of key weaknesses in the team, as the United squad struggles to adapt to the 3-4-3 system Amorim is implementing, the injecting of a fee worth around €70 million would be a massive boost to the club’s recruitment abilities.

However, Amorim has praised Garnacho in recent weeks after the Portuguese coach reinstated the 20-year-old to the first-team, having dropped him for the Manchester Derby in December due to an issue with training and professionalism off the pitch.

Amorim is evidently aware of the Argentine’s talent and Garnacho remains one of the team’s biggest goal threats, with neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee impressing their 39-year-old manager.

As such, Amorim is reported to only be open to Garnacho’s departure if a suitable replacement can be found before the end of the January window. This has led the club to impose a time-restriction on any deal for the 20-year-old winger.

The report reveals, “Manchester United are only prepared to listen to offers for Chelsea and Napoli target Alejandro Garnacho over the course of the next 48 hours as Old Trafford head coach Ruben Amorim is fearful that he will have no time to secure a replacement if an eleventh-hour deal is negotiated, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

“Manchester United have decided they will only entertain sanctioning Garnacho’s exit if Chelsea or fellow suitors Napoli head to the negotiating table with a formal proposal in the next 48 hours, according to GMS sources, as Amorim is desperate to avoid a deadline day saga and stopping short of forcing him out.

“GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United do not want uncertainty over Garnacho’s future to drag beyond Friday as it would give Amorim limited opportunities to recruit a replacement, meaning Chelsea and Napoli are in a race against time if they want to acquire his services.”

Evidently, there is no desire to see Garnacho leave Old Trafford amongst United’s executive branch or coaching staff. But there is an acceptance that a player without an obvious home in the starting eleven, who could command a sizeable fee equating to ‘pure profit’, may prove a sale too good to turn down.

Any interested suitors will have to pay up or shut up by Friday night, however.

Rashford ‘transfer statements’ and ‘red lines’ issued as former Man Utd star drops ‘cryptic’ return hint

Almost nothing has actually happened in the Great Marcus Rashford Transfer Saga of 2025 over the last 24 hours, but that hasn’t stopped the content machine going brrrr.

We say ‘almost nothing’, but we are now able to eliminate one of the several hundred clubs who could theoretically sign him in the coming days, so that’s progress of sorts.

                      Statement of intent
Marcus Rashford remains the biggest/only name in town as the January transfer window rumbles quietly and forlornly onwards with almost nothing actually happening, in accordance with tradition.

He’s everywhere again today, but annoyingly a lot of the coverage is just about fair enough. There’s definitely a bit of mischief with the ‘not on speaking terms’ stuff about him and Ruben Amorim that started with Jamie Jackson in The Guardian and has been gleefully jumped upon by the tabloids.

It’s not wrong, it’s just a loaded phrase, isn’t it? There’s a suggestion of personal animosity where it’s really more just professional irrelevance from Amorim’s side. There are probably lots of players not in his matchday thinking with whom he is also technically ‘not on speaking terms’.

But if they’re not on speaking terms, how do they communicate? Through ‘statements’ of course, as the Mirror solemnly declare here.

Ruben Amorim issues new Marcus Rashford statement with ‘red lines’ explanation

It’s a bit like when two friends fall out at school, and speak only through a third party, except here instead of the third party being an exasperated mutual friend, it’s a media determined to be sh*thouses about it.

We’re not sure exactly when everything a manager says in an interview became a ‘statement’ but we do know what Amorim has said would previously have been described as a ‘message’ but this time cannot, for reasons you’ll soon see.

“I don’t want to give messages to anyone,” Amorim said in an interview with TNT Sports Mexico, as per Sport Witness. “I’m just very clear about what the players have to do. I’m demanding in certain things, but then I’m a coach like everyone else.

“There are just certain red lines that I feel that, for a group to win games and titles, you have to follow a criteria. And so, if there’s no such criteria, then it’s all very subjective. And there are certain things that we have to be very clear with the players. That’s just it. I don’t want to send messages to anyone.”

Mediawatch notes with interest that Amorim hasn’t even used the words ‘Marcus’ or ‘Rashford’ in this ‘Marcus Rashford statement’.

                      Rash move
But Amorim isn’t the only man issuing Marcus Rashford statements for the Mirror to pore over. Oh no.

Man Utd transfer news: Marcus Rashford transfer statement issued as £35m deal moves closer

Regular Mediawatch readers will already be hearing sirens and seeing flashing lights at the sight of that ‘as’, and we’ll come to that.

But let’s start with the ‘Marcus Rashford transfer statement’. Has it come from Marcus Rashford? No. Has it come from anyone connected to Rashford, or indeed Manchester United? Haha, you know it hasn’t. Come on.

It has of course come from the vice-president of Fenerbahce, Acun Ilicali. He has confirmed Fenerbahce will not in fact be signing Rashford at this time.

Mediawatch looks forward to several hundred more of these statements over the coming days as every club across Europe and beyond is forced to confirm they will also not be signing Rashford.

Now, back to that ‘as’. Because Fenerbahce NOT signing Rashford doesn’t really feel like it means a deal ‘moves closer’. And that is of course because that has nothing to do with Rashford or Fenerbahce at all.

It’s about Patrick Dorgu, who Man United want to buy for £30m but Lecce don’t want to sell for less than £35m.

If we’re being complete pricks about it, which we’re afraid is exactly what we’re going to be, there’s not really anything in this particular update to justify the ‘moves closer’ even for that ‘deal’. It remains a move that is likely to happen but one not yet agreed, something that has been the case now for several weeks.

                      Harry’s Game
Nice little interview in The Sun with Owen Hargreaves, where he speaks at some length about Bayern Munich’s defensive frailties and the potential for said frailties to scupper their hopes of winning the Champions League.

It’s all fair enough, and from a former player with plenty of authority to discuss Bayern Munich and the winning of Champions Leagues. But vaguely interesting quotes from knowledgeable former player butters few football journalism parsnips in 2025.

                      So we get this headline.

Harry Kane could be robbed of Champions League fairytale by Bayern Munich’s biggest downfall, fears ex-England star

                      And then this intro.

HARRY KANE could be robbed of a Champions League fairytale this year unless Bayern Munich learn to defend better, according to Owen Hargreaves.

By this point, we clearly don’t need to even bother asking you handsome lot how many times Hargreaves utters the words ‘Harry Kane’. Or, indeed, the word ‘robbed’ which is a very weird framing of ‘probably won’t win it unless they defend better’. Is every team that doesn’t win a trophy robbed? Or only when that team has the England captain in it?

The final kicker here, just to elevate this above the standard disingenuous framing Mediawatch sees dozens of times a day, is that it’s a sponsored interview Hargreaves has done in association with TNT Sports. So if they’d asked him to say the words ‘Harry Kane’ he absolutely would have said the words ‘Harry Kane’. They just don’t care.

                      Safety dance
There’s a passionate defence of the new Champions League format over on Mail Online this morning from Lewis Steele. While Mediawatch disagrees with pretty much the entire premise, we are trying to grow and learn and accept that others can have different opinions and while, sure, they may not be as good or uniformly correct as ours they are nevertheless still valid in their own little way. So that’s fine. Honestly, it’s fine. We’re fine. It’s fine.

We do have to take issue with this line, though, on a technical and factual basis. Much as it pains us to do so.

But the jeopardy of climbing the table, fighting for play-offs and no safety-net of the third-placed sides dropping into the Europa League, it feels like the drama has been amped up.

You’ve said it right there: fighting for play-offs. That is the safety net.

In the old Champions League, 16 teams qualified and eight further teams landed in the Europa League safety net.

Now eight teams qualify directly, with 16 teams in the play-offs. Which the cleverest boffins and stats nerds among you will have spotted is still 24 teams, isn’t it? They haven’t got rid of the safety net; they’ve just replaced a Europa League safety net with a Champions League safety net.

                      Strip tease
Mediawatch has been doing this a long time now, and we like to think we’ve developed a good nose for headlines that contain dangerous levels of bullsh*t. But sometimes it’s just very, very obvious. Like this Daily Star headline, for instance.

Paul Pogba teases third Man Utd spell with cryptic four-word social media post

All manner of clues here. ‘Pogba’ is one, straight away. And ‘teases’ and ‘cryptic’ and ‘four-word’ and ‘social media’. Really all we’re missing here for a full house is ‘clue’ or ‘hint’.

Paul Pogba has dropped a major hint about making a sensational comeback to Manchester United after his 18-month ban for failing a drugs test is done.

There it is! We’re only six words in and a cryptic tease has already become a major hint. It’s basically a done deal. What’s this hint, then.

In a series of posts on his Instagram story, Pogba shared a cartoon showing him stood next to Amad, with the pair wearing United kits. He also shared a second snap of him looking out over Miami with the caption: “Let’s see what’s coming…”

                      Miami/Manchester. Basically interchangeable, aren’t they?

What about this cartoon, though. With Amad? Well first it is a cartoon and not real, which we really don’t feel like we should have to explain to be honest. And second, in that picture Amad is wearing the current United kit and Pogba is pictured in an old one. From when he played for Manchester United. In the past.

One could just as easily consider the cryptic meaning or major hint or whatever here to be a passing of the torch, if one were so inclined.
