12 clearances, 4 ground duels won: United loanee puts in rock solid performance at heart of defence

Numerous Manchester United youngsters were in action last night in the football league.

Accrington Stanley’s Sonny Aljofree had the best of the showings as he received a rating of 7.5 from Sofascore for his performance in a 0-0 draw against Cheltenham Town.

As well as helping his side keep a clean sheet, he made an impressive 12 clearances in the match.

He also made four tackles and one interception as he helped keep the visitors at bay.

Aljofree won four out of his six ground duels and two out of his four aerial battles, as he was his usual combative sense in the defence.

The 20 year old also connected with six out of his 11 long ball attempts.

In the same match, Ethan Williams came off the bench for Cheltenham and had 29 minutes of action, where he was given a rating of 6.7.

The winger could have little impact against a tight Accrington defence as he had zero attempts at goal and only completed five out of his 10 pass attempts.

He was also wasteful in possession, losing it 10 times despite having only 18 touches of the ball. The youngster will need time to adapt to senior football in League Two.

Joe Hugill was also in action for Carlisle United as they narrowly lost 1-0 to Notts County.

The striker was heavily involved in the action as he had three shots on target and two that went wide off the mark but could not find his first goal for the club.

He was inches away from doing so as he had an effort that rebounded off the post and whilst he will be unhappy to miss such big chances, he will hope more will soon fall his way in his side’s next match.

Hugill was also good on the ball as he made 78% of his passes during the match and he won 100% of his aerial battles.
Ethan Wheatley also got a start for Walsall but they lost 2-0 away to Fleetwood Town.

He played 68 minutes of the match before being subbed off and had one shot on target and one shot off it.

Wheatley won two out of his three ground battles but was bullied in the air, coming out on top in just one out of his seven aerial duels.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
