United face nightmare scenario of losing long-term target to Liverpool this summer – report

Long-term Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong could be on his ways to arch-rivals Liverpool.

The Red Devils have had a long-standing interest in the Dutch midfielder, dating back to Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge in 2022.

United agreed a deal with FC Barcelona to sign the midfielder but De Jong refused to move as he was happy to stay in Catalonia.

Over the years however, his influence has waned in the Barcelona team and it has been reported that La Blaugrana would be keen to offload him and his eye-watering wages.

United have recently been linked with making a move for the midfielder on a free transfer next year when his contract expires.

Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be lurking in the background for the former Ajax player.

CaughtOffside now report that United may face even stiffer competition for the midfield maestro.

Liverpool are thought to be keen on strengthening their midfield and have discussed numerous options. “Among those is Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, CaughtOffside understands, though there could be an issue with the Netherlands international’s wages.”

“De Jong could be available for around €35m as Barca are prepared to part ways with him, but he’s been on a high salary at the Nou Camp and that’s put off Liverpool and other clubs in the past.”

The Red Devils will certainly be keen on midfield reinforcements in the summer as only Manuel Ugarte has fully adapted to Amorim’s demands from his two central midfielders.

Bruno Fernandes has played quite well but United lack a certain threat in attack when their captain starts the game so far from goal.

Whether De Jong would be a potential option for United in the summer is yet to be seen but it would certainly be tough viewing for supporters of the club to see the player they have so publicly chased for a long time suit up in the red of Liverpool next year.

Amorim’s sensational goalkeeping target admits he’s a lifelong United supporter – report

Manchester United target Sam Tickle has spoken out on recent rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have had a terrible season to date and will need significant strengthening in the summer.

One problematic position is that of goalkeeper, as Andre Onana’s form has fallen off a cliff with a series of high-profile mistakes in the worst possible moments, like in the home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion last month.

Second-choice keeper Altay Bayindir has been more impressive, including putting in a wonderful display in the last round of the FA Cup, stopping a penalty in normal time and also one in the penalty shootout versus Arsenal.

But he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Galatasaray reportedly interested in his services.

United have therefore been linked to different goalkeepers such as Illan Meslier and Zion Suzuki.

Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle is another keeper who is reportedly on United’s radar and he has spoken out on the rumours.

The Daily Mail report that “Tickle’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with Birmingham, Sunderland, Preston and Everton among the clubs touted with an interest, while some reports have claimed Man United and Arsenal are eyeing up a move.”

The keeper, who boasts a 77% percent save percentage and is regarded as one of Wigan’s best-ever academy products, has also recently commented on speculation linking him with a move away from the Brick Community Stadium.

“It’s nice to see your name linked but it doesn’t impact me. As long as I get to play football, I’m happy.”

The 22 year old did admit that he has sympathies for the Red Devils and claimed, “I’m a Man United fan but I’ve been at the club so long that I’m a Wigan fan now.”

The goalkeeper also recounted his side’s match against United in January 2024 in the FA Cup and recalled, “I got (Andre) Onana’s shirt and I spoke to Tom Heaton for a bit so it was a special occasion, especially for me and my dad because he’s a United fan as well.”

United can make history tonight by beating Leicester in the FA Cup

Manchester United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford aiming to be the first team to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The two sides have played one another 139 times, with the Red Devils coming out on top on 72 occasions.

There have also been 36 wins for the Foxes and 31 draws in the fixture.

Here are three plotlines to digest before the cup match.

The return of Ruud van Nistelrooy

The Dutchman is a legend and a hero of the Stretford End. Leicester’s manager scored 150 goals in 219 appearances winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Old Trafford.

He also joined the coaching team in the summer and was an assistant manager to Erik ten Hag for a few months.

Van Nistelrooy landed his dream job in October when Ten Hag was sacked and he was named interim manager. The Red Devils won three and drew the other of his four matches in charge, including a 5-2 win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup. He would later leave the club when Ruben Amorim was announced as manager and took up the job at the King Power Stadium.

Today’s match will mark Ruud’s first return to Old Trafford as an opposition coach and he has already spoken on how he knows the United side inside out after his time working with the current squad.

Whatever the score tonight, one thing is assured, the visiting manager will receive a great reception from the Stretford End and whole stadium.

United looking to beat the same team three times at home in a season

The cup draws have presented United with a rather unusual opportunity.

The Red Devils have already beaten Leicester City 3-0 in the league.

As previously mentioned, they disposed of the Foxes 5-2 in Van Nistelrooy’s first match as interim coach.

Due to the FA Cup draw and the rarity of playing the same team in both cups, they have been presented with the opportunity to win a third match of the season at Old Trafford against the same opposition.

According to the BBC, “they’ve never won three home games against one club in a season before, with Man City against Chelsea in 2022-23 the last time a Premier League side did so against a fellow top-flight opponent.”

Bruno Fernandes’ fine FA Cup form

The Portuguese international is usually at the heart of what United do right and he has a great recent record in this competition.

The attacking midfielder “has been involved in 10 goals in his last 10 FA Cup appearances for Manchester United (7 goals, 3 assists).”

He scored a great goal in United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the previous round and also converted his penalty in the shootout victory.

Fernandes was also pivotal in last year’s FA Cup success as he scored a goal and provided an assist in the semi-final versus Coventry City.

The Portugal international also produced a wonderfully disguised pass to find Kobbie Mainoo for United’s decisive second goal in the 2-1 win over Manchester City in the final.

Man Utd: Amorim reveals the reason he ‘decided’ to axe Rashford in admission on sack before ‘summer’

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed why he felt he had to offload Marcus Rashford during the winter transfer window.

It was hoped that the appointment of Amorim would give Rashford a much-needed boost as his form dramatically declined after he scored 30 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign.

However, Amorim and Rashford did not see eye to eye at the start of the Man Utd head coach’s reign as the forward ‘frustrated’ him for two reasons.

Rashford felt the January transfer window was the right time to leave after he butted heads with Amorim and eventually joined Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy after missing out on a move to La Liga giants FC Barcelona.

His exit leaves Man Utd short of options in attacking areas but Amorim has revealed why he felt he had no choice but to get rid of Rashford in January.

“I couldn’t get Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it,” Amorim said.

“Sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different.

“I wish the best to Rashford and to [Villa manager] Unai Emery, and they can connect because he’s a very good player.”

When asked whether Rashford told him he disagreed with his ideas about football, Amorim answered: “You know, like me, that it’s not the way that occurs.

“It’s something that you feel as a coach and as a player. It’s quite normal. It happened with a lot of coaches.

“The important thing is that I’m here saying that was my decision, like Ty [Malacia] and Antony was my decision to do these loans, and to keep some players even without any transfers.”

Amorim was also asked whether Rashford has any chance of a return in the summer. In response, he insisted he’s fully focused on this season as everyone at United is “fighting for our jobs until the summer”.

Amorim has also claimed that it was his “decision” not to make more signings during the winter window.

“We are taking a risk but we want a different thing in the team, different profiles. It was my decision to do that,” Amorim continued.

“What I feel is that the club is taking its time. We know the urgency of the moment of the team (but) everybody here does not want to make the same mistakes of the past.

“In the summer we will see but like I said we are being really careful with transfers because we did some mistakes in the past.”

3-4-3: Amorim’s United will hunt down the Foxes with this explosive young line-up

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has said that new signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven are “ready to play” against Leicester City in tonight’s FA Cup fourth round tie.

Dorgu in particular should be match fit, having played 23 games for Lecce this season.18 year old Heaven has also played 15 games but only one, his Arsenal debut in the Carabao Cup, at senior level.

            Defensive reshuffle required

With Lisandro Martinez being ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, Amorim will have to reshuffle his defence anyway, so we expect Dorgu to come straight in as left wing back.

This could allow Noussair Mazraoui to fill in for Martinez in the back three, with Diogo Dalot switching to right wing back.

Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt would be the other members of the back line.

Leny Yoro is also an option but with the luxury of a nine-day gap before the next game, we see no reason why the boss wouldn’t field his strongest XI. In that regard, Yoro is still a work in progress, albeit an exceptional one.

Heaven is a left-footed centre back so whilst he is young and inexperienced, Amorim might want to look at how he does off the bench.

The dream scenario would be that United build a convincing lead and then bring on both Yoro and Heaven for the last 30 minutes.

Victor Lindelof is available and could also fill in for Martinez, but he is not match fit and it would seem unlikely that he is re-introduced at this stage as the last weeks of his contract run down.

Tyrell Malacia has been loaned to PSV Eindhoven, while Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans are still unavailable.

Plenty of midfield options, but little choice up front

Manu Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes will probably continue in central midfield.

Christian Eriksen, Toby Collyer and Casemiro are other options.

The experiment of playing Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine didn’t work against Crystal Palace and so either Rasmus Hojlund or Josh Zirkzee should be reinstated in the centre forward position. We think the Dutchman is probably the slightly better option right now.

Amad and Alejandro Garnacho would provide support in the other forward roles.

Following the loan departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony and given the continuing absence of Mason Mount, those four stars are the only real options up front unless the false nine experiment is continued, or a youngster is promoted.

In that sense, one possible surprise could be the inclusion of 17-year-old Chido Obi on the bench. The academy star has been sensational at both Under 18 and Under 21 level and this might be an opportunity for Amorim to throw him into the first team and see how he gets on.

Gabriele Biancheri is another exciting forward option who might grab himself a spot on the bench. He is a year older than Obi, but the Dane is perhaps physically bigger and stronger.

With Altay Bayindir expected to be selected in goal, as he has been for most cup matches this season, here is our predicted XI for tonight’s 8pm kick off:

Amorim finally spills the beans on why he exiled Rashford and sanctioned his loan move to Villa

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that he struggled to get through to Marcus Rashford, who was unable to adapt to the way he wanted to play and train.

Last Sunday, Rashford completed his loan move to Aston Villa. Rashford played in Amorim’s first six matches but was dropped for the Manchester derby in mid-December, after which the forward publicly stated he was ready for a new challenge away from Old Trafford.

Rashford did not play for United again after following his interview, with his last minutes for the side coming during the Europa League trip to Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

Ahead of United’s FA Cup meeting with Leicester City on Friday, Amorim opened up on Rashford and said, “I couldn’t put Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it.”

“And sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different. I just wish the best to Rashford and to Unai Emery, and they can connect because he’s a very good player.”

Asked whether Rashford voiced concerns over his football ideas, Amorim replied, “You know, like me, that it’s not the way that occurs. It’s something that you feel as a coach and as a player. It’s quite normal. It happened with a lot of coaches.”

“The important thing is that I’m here saying that was my decision, like Ty (Malacia) and Antony was my decision to do these loans, and to keep some players even without any transfers.”

On whether there is a chance that Rashford returns to United in the summer, Amorim answered, “Guys, in the summer… like we said before, we are fighting for our jobs until the summer. So, I am just focused on these games. Thankfully about Marcus he is in Birmingham now with Unai, so you can take these questions to another coach. We are just focused on our players at the moment.”

On United’s business in the January transfer window, Amorim admitted that his side have taken a risk by allowing three experienced players to leave and only replacing them with two young defenders – Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.

“Like I said in the first day, every player that came in to the team, I have to have the final word. That was really clear in the beginning. It’s also really clear. But we do it altogether, so I don’t point [out] just the names.”

“I define with Jason [Wilcox, the club’s technical director], the profile and then we have a scouting [department] that makes [does] the job. And that is the important thing because everybody has to decide.”

“It’s not just one thing that the coach today decides one thing, and then we change everything, and then it’s a completely different profile. We try to find the right players with the physicality for this league: young players, hungry players.”

“Sometimes, we cannot spend a lot of money with players. So it’s that kind of profile that we look for and Dorgu, he has all that ability to play in this team, to improve. Ayden – the same thing. He’s young, he’s left-footed, he’s a central defender, so it’s the right profile for us in the moment.”

Amorim also spoke about his decision to axe Ruud van Nistelrooy rather than retain him as part of his backroom staff.

During his time as interim boss, Van Nistelrooy repeatedly expressed a desire to stay at the club. However, Amorim opted against this idea, instead choosing to work with his own set of coaches from Sporting Lisbon.

Van Nistelrooy ended up being appointed Leicester boss and the two men will meet in the Old Trafford dugout on Friday.

Amorim said about this, “It was not a difficult situation because it was so clear for me, I just had to explain. I think it’s really simple and he understands. He is a man of football, he understands this situation. I have my team and my staff. I could keep Ruud because it was a good thing for me, a popular thing to do.”

“But I will not put Ruud in front of my guys, no matter what, and then I had to put a person like Ruud in the end on the hierarchy on my staff, and I think that was not fair on Ruud. To show respect to Ruud I was really clear with him and I explained that I have my team, I will continue the same way and I will not put a guy like Ruud, a legend of this club, in the end of the hierarchy in the staff.”

“So, it was the clear decision, really simple to explain and he took it like a class guy as he is.”

On the benefit of having somebody that knows United as well as Van Nistelrooy, Amorim pointed out, “The most important thing to have as a coach is a staff who understand the way you want to play, the standards you have.”

“When I say standards, I am not saying Ruud don’t have these standards – he was a legend of this club, he knows what it takes to win. But I prefer to work with a team that brought me here. It’s clear that is important for me, to explain the same thing to the players, so it was that decision.”

“I’m really comfortable and confident that I know how to win, no matter the club…of course we are losing and in the moment you need experienced guys, but I’m not lost, or I feel a of something in the staff. We just need to improve as a team.”

Both Van Nistelrooy and Erik ten Hag boast better records than Amorim this season.

However, according to the 40-year-old United head coach, the statistic doesn’t bother him too much.

“It’s not awkward and I think it’s normal. He knew the team, he worked with the team. I made some decisions that are really hard, to sometimes create problems, friction in the team.”

“Everything in the schedule that you don’t have time to train, to know the person. It’s really hard because I’m a really proud guy, but I take this normally. They were better than me in training this team, so I’m trying to help them to see the game the way I see, to improve the performance, and also the results.”

United vs. Leicester kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

Red-hot PL attacking target who destroyed Amorim’s team single-handedly gets new come-get-me £62.5m release clause – report

Ruben Amorim will have to navigate a challenge on three fronts with a threadbare Manchester United attack after INEOS failed to add a striker to their ranks in January.

Following Marcus Rashford’s loan departure to Aston Villa, the head coach is left with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as his only recognised striking options.

The Dane’s goalless run has entered its 13th game now with the Portuguese far from impressed with the United No 9 with a summer departure potentially on the cards.

The Netherlands international has fared little better, managing a mere four goals in 35 appearances. Despite Amorim’s wishes of adding another body in attack, INEOS saw three separate deals for forwards collapse on deadline day.

                United need a goalscorer

Matheus Cunha was heavily linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams following his star turn for Wolverhampton Wanderers against Amorim’s side in December.

Initially, it seemed a parting of ways was on the cards following talks of a rift with new boss Vitor Pereira. But the Brazilian has since signed a new four-and-half year deal with the West Midlands outfit.

But that has not stopped rumours of an exit from circulating with Football Insider claiming the 25-year-old remains intent on leaving in the summer for a big club as he seeks to play in the Champions League.

Which is why his new contract includes a release clause worth £62.5 million, which will net Wolves a healthy profit on their initial investment of £44 million.

“Matheus Cunha is keen to play for a bigger club despite signing a new Wolves contract, sources have told Football Insider.

“That deal includes a £62.5million release clause which has safeguarded the 25-year-old’s value to Wolves, who have struggled financially in recent seasons.

“Sources say there will “no doubt” be renewed interest from top Premier League clubs in the summer window if Cunha can maintain his impressive form in the second half of this season.

                Cunha release clause

“It is believed Cunha has demanded the release clause to give him the opportunity to make such a move as he has big ambitions and wants to play Champions League football.”

The former Atletico Madrid star has 11 goals and four assists this term and it remains to be seen if United reactivate their interest once the summer window opens.

Cunha can play up front as well as a No 10 while he can also do a job out wide and Amorim will take the final call regarding whether he wants a versatile forward or a ruthless striker like Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal are seen as frontrunners but if the Brazil international continues to shine in the same manner, plenty of other big clubs are expected to enter the fray.

Manchester United academy stalwart Tony Whelan has issued a statement, following his retirement from his role after more than three decades.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Whelan quietly left the club after 34 years in various roles.

Whelan came through the youth ranks at United under Sir Matt Busby and later played for the reserves before he was invited back in a coaching capacity by Nobby Stiles and Brian Kidd.

He went on to serve as the academy head of coaching and academy programme adviser during his latter years. Under Whelan, a total of 97 academy graduates made their first-team debut for United.

In 2020, he was given the Premier League’s Eamonn Dolan Award for his outstanding contribution to youth development.

He released a statement to the Manchester Evening News, reflecting on his time at Old Trafford and some of his remarkable achievements.

“After many dedicated to Manchester United, father time has gently tapped me on the shoulder, and I have now stepped down from my role at the academy.”

“I wanted to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of my amazing journey with this magnificent football club.”

“Serving Manchester United has undoubtedly been one of the honours and privileges of my life. My story with the club began in the autumn of 1967 when I was spotted by the legendary scout Joe Armstrong while playing for my town team, Stretford Boys. I was just 14 years old and thought all my Christmases had come at once.”

“I signed schoolboy forms with the club, became an apprentice in 1968 and turned professional in December 1969. My time as a player at Manchester United was unforgettable, and I still cherish every moment to this day. However, all good things come to an end and I left the club in February 1973 to continue my career elsewhere.”

“Little did I know that, 17 years later, I would return as a youth coach. This unexpected turn of events gave me the unbelievable opportunity to work with so many wonderful people – players, parents and colleagues – over the course of three decades.”

“Throughout my coaching career I have been blessed with the help, support and encouragement of countless colleagues and friends who have earned my deepest respect, gratitude and affection. They know who they are, and I will remain forever indebted to them.”

“My guiding principle as a coach has always been to instil in young players a lifelong love of the game, one that will stay with them long after their childhood years. If I have achieved this, even in a small way, then I am extremely humbled.”

He added, “As I step away, I do so with the utmost confidence in the club’s future. I wish Manchester United every success and look forward to watching the outstanding graduates of the academy continue to make their way into the first team, carrying on the club’s peerless tradition for developing homegrown players, a legacy that goes all the way back to Tom Manley in 1931.”

“I feel a great sense of pride and satisfaction to have played a small part in this incredible journey and I leave with nothing but the fondest of memories. Meanwhile, you will still see me at the far post.”

United are back in action on Friday when they host Leicester in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has not been pleased with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, which is why the duo’s minutes have drastically reduced since he took over.

The Dane started nine times under former manager Erik ten Hag but has managed only five since the Portuguese walked through the doors with his last league start coming more than a month ago.

As for the Brazilian, he made a cameo off the bench against FCSB, his first appearance in over a month with Amorim making it clear that he felt the five-time Champions League winner no longer possesses the intensity required to play regularly.

Both the Denmark international and former Real Madrid superstar were linked with exits in the winter but nothing materialised in the end but they are unlikely to be at the club beyond the current campaign.

                    United eyeing Hackney

The Red Devils are scouring the Championship for possible midfield replacements with Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham named as potential options with the club’s scouts in attendance for Sunderland’s game against Middlesbrough.

Even though the duo were looked at, it was Boro’s Hayden Hackney who got himself on the scoresheet from midfield while also registering an assist and he has been a long-term target for the 20-time English league champions.

As per Givemesport, United failed to tempt Middlesbrough into selling their talisman in January but a summer approach is expected with the Old Trafford side hoping Michael Carrick will be open to allowing the 22-year-old to join his former club.

Another of Carrick’s former clubs Tottenham Hotspur are also in the race and a tug-of-war is expected to ensue for the England U21 international once the current campaign ends, especially if Boro fail to get promoted.

Hackney has five goals and two assists from 28 games in all competitions and he primarily excels as a defensive midfielder but can also play further forward if required.

Spurs vs United for Boro star

“Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are threatening to go head-to-head for the signing of Hayden Hackney in the summer as the Middlesbrough star has remained on the radar of recruitment chiefs at Old Trafford and Hotspur Way, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

“Manchester United and Tottenham could make a summer move for Hackney after being unable to tempt Middlesbrough into sanctioning his departure during the winter transfer window, according to GMS sources, and they stand a chance of winning the race for his signature by lodging a bid in the region of £20 million.”

“GMS sources have been told that Middlesbrough are expecting the clamour for Hackney’s services to grow between now and the summer, meaning Manchester United and Tottenham are in danger of facing extensive competition for an agreement if they choose to formalise their interest with a bid later this year.”

It would reportedly take only £20 million to secure his services, a cakewalk for either English giant if they seriously decide to pursue Hackney. But a lot more sides could enter the fray and potentially end up in a bidding war which could suit Boro.

It is good to see United finally look at the Championship to secure top, young talent with many other sides far ahead in the game.

The English second division is a breeding ground for young talent and INEOS are slowly, but surely getting the recruitment game spot on.

Four TV giants battling to secure United legend as their next marquee pundit – report

Wayne Rooney is at the centre of a four-way tug-of-war for his first job since being sacked as Plymouth Argyle manager, with the giants of sports TV circling the Manchester United legend.

Rooney is set to feature as a pundit for Amazon’s coverage of the upcoming Champions League match between Manchester City and Real Madrid.

And as per The Mirror, the broadcaster has held discussions about bringing him on board as a regular member of their team, which also features Daniel Sturridge and Alan Shearer, with Gabby Logan presenting.

The former United captain finds himself with time on his hands after parting ways with Plymouth on New Year’s Eve, and this has not gone unnoticed by rival broadcasters looking for big names.

The Mirror claim that “offers have been flooding in” for United’s record goalscorer, who has already featured on Sky, BBC and TNT Sports.

It is reported that BBC’s Match of the Day “would happily sign him up” as the show prepares for life beyond Gary Lineker, which is thought to include “a different and wider variety of guests.”

The report continues that Sky Sports “rate him highly” and note that he offered strong views on The Overlap last week.

And completing the quartet vying for Rooney’s time, TNT have previously employed the 39-year-old, picking his brains for last season’s clash between Everton and United.

The implication is that they would like to call on him for more coverage in the future.

But while these three are well-established in the football broadcasting game, Amazon are still developing their offering and would doubtless love to lock Rooney down as a flagship acquisition.

The Mirror believe that securing him as a regular pundit “would be a big coup” for Amazon, who share Champions League rights with TNT this season.

If all goes to plan, Rooney will be pitchside at the Etihad for next week’s last-16 play-off.
