Amorim believes 17yo starlet is the “only one” in United academy ready to start, but he’s not a striker – report

Manchester United youngster Godwill Kukonki is the “only” academy player to have impressed Ruben Amorim amid interest from the DR Congo in securing the 16-year-old defender’s future at international level.

When Amorim joined as the head coach at Old Trafford in November, to replace Erik ten Hag, the 39-year-old “assessed” the club’s youngsters in his first training session.

And despite talents such as Chido Obi and Shea Lacey in the United ranks, Kukonki was the “only prospect” who impressed the former Sporting manager, the Manchester Evening News reveals.

The defender’s imposing physique – standing 6’5 at only 17 – and left-footedness are two attributes any modern manager will prioritise given the unique nature of both, while his maturity levels are said to surpass his tender years.

“It’s understood Amorim assessed academy youngsters in his first training in November and Kukonki was the only prospect who made an impression on United’s head coach”, the report states.

Kukonki was brought along for the trip to Portman Road to play Ipswich Town in Amorim’s first match, though he was not officially included in the match-day squad. But the 17-year-old was then named by the Portuguese coach as a substitute for a match away to Arsenal – a reflection of how highly-regarded the defender is by his manager.

Speaking after the match against the Gunners, Amorim reversed praise for Kukonki: “He’s 16, but he impressed me a lot, so it’s also a sign to the youth players that they can be here. If something happened with the first-team, they have to step up and I think he’s ready, he’s very adult to handle the Premier League’s demands.”

The youngster has been included in further match-day squads with a sense his senior debut is a matter of sooner rather than later.

The Manchester Evening News notes Kukonki has “caught the attention of other Premier League clubs”, as well as the 17-year-old receiving interest internationally.

Though Kukonki was born in Stoke-on-Trent and joined the Red Devil’s youth set-up as a five-year-old, the centre-back also qualifies for the DR Congo national team due to his Congolese heritage.

And Kukonki’s rapid ascension into the first-team at Old Trafford has put the Congolese Football Federation on red-alert with an “approach” made by representatives to choose the Congo over England.

Kukonki is yet to be called up to an England youth squad but the Manchester Evening News contends this “could happen immediately” due to the growing interest in the uniquely talented 17-year-old.

Man Utd transfer: INEOS to ‘accept significant loss’ to axe flop as ‘pole’ Euro giants discover ‘discounted price’

According to reports, Manchester United are ready to ‘accept a significant loss’ to offload big-money flop Rasmus Hojlund to Serie A giants Juventus.

The Red Devils paid around £64m plus add-ons to sign Hojlund from Serie A outfit Atalanta during the 2023 summer transfer window.

United invested heavily in Hojlund after he scored ten goals in 34 appearances for the Italian side during the 2022/23 season.

The Premier League giants could have done with signing a second striker, but their failure to land Harry Kane forced former boss Erik ten Hag to rely on Hojlund too much during his debut season.

The raw 22-year-old was not ready for such a significant role, but he was still one of their better performers in a disastrous season as he netted 16 goals in his 43 outings in all competitions.

READ: Rashford seen TRAINING despite Amorim ‘lazy’ dig as Manchester United loanee sends ‘one-word verdict’

However, Hojlund has not kicked on after last season and has been heavily criticised for his poor performances this term.

New head coach Ruben Amorim is clearly not his biggest fan as he recently selected Kobbie Mainoo as a makeshift striker ahead of the Denmark international and Joshua Zirkzee.

Hojlund has seven goals across all competitions this term, but this only includes two goals in his 19 Premier League appearances.

Despite this, several Serie A clubs are linked with Hojlund and a report in Italy claims Juventus are in ‘pole position’ to sign him from Man Utd.

It is also noted that their position would be strengthened if/when Dusan Vlahovic is sold amid interest from Arsenal.

The report claims Man Utd are ‘prepared for a cut-price sale’ sale as they ‘would accept’ a ‘significant loss’ on Hojlund.

‘This situation has led Manchester United to reassess the player’s future. According to sources close to the club, the Red Devils would be willing to accept offers of around £40 million, despite knowing that they would have to make a significant loss on their initial investment.

‘Among the clubs interested in Hojlund is Juventus, who could make a move in the summer if Dusan Vlahovic leaves Turin. The Serbian striker, under contract until 2026, is at the centre of market speculation, with several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, ready to make an offer.

‘Juventus, led by Thiago Motta , are already evaluating potential replacements for Vlahovic, and Hojlund would be an ideal option, given his young profile and his experience in Serie A with Atalanta.

‘The Bianconeri’s interest could intensify in the coming months, especially if Manchester United confirm their willingness to sell the Dane at a discounted price.

‘Other Serie A teams are also monitoring Hojlund’s situation, attracted by the possibility of bringing back to Italy a striker who had impressed with the Atalanta jersey. However, Juventus seem to be in pole position, especially if they can finance the operation through the sale of Vlahovic.’

Tottenham blow as Tel’s two-word Man Utd transfer stance threatens to ruin Spurs’ buy ‘agreement’

A new report has revealed Mathys Tel’s current stance on a move to Manchester United after he joined Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.

Tel attracted interest from several Premier League clubs in January after it emerged that he wanted to leave Bayern Munich to pursue regular football elsewhere.

Man Utd and Arsenal were mooted as potential destinations for the 19-year-old attacker, but Spurs were most interested and eventually signed the Bayern Munich starlet on deadline day.

Tottenham initially moved to sign Tel permanently for around £60m but re-negotiated a loan deal with a buy option after the teenager turned down an immediate long-term move to North London.

It’s since emerged that this ‘purchase option agreement’ depends on one condition as this clause can only be triggered if Tel is in favour of the move.

Now, Falk has broken down how Tel ended up at Spurs, with Bayern Munich “very disappointed” with his initial decision.

“Bayern would have liked to have sold Mathys Tel in the January transfer window. In fact, they were very disappointed that, at the last moment, Tel said, ‘No’ to a permanent move to Tottenham,” Falk said in his Daily Briefing column.

READ: Rashford seen TRAINING despite Amorim ‘lazy’ dig as Manchester United loanee sends ‘one-word verdict’

“That was before the weekend, but during the weekend it seems he wanted to stay at Bayern Munich. So, this is how the loan deal with Tottenham eventually came about.

“Tottenham were really fighting for this release clause – Bayern initially refused and then agreed on a €60m release clause.

“Bayern see it as a success that they managed to agree a big loan fee, which could rise to €10m, which is a lot for only six months.

“If they manage to then sell Tel in the summer, by their calculations they could earn as much as €70m, which would mean they’d get a lot of money back from their Harry Kane purchase (€100m) back in 2023. If you think about it that way, they would have only spent €30m for Kane – that’s cheap!”

Falk claims a move to Man Utd remains on the table as he “would like” to join the Red Devils if possible.

“There were also talks with Manchester United who were interested in Mathys Tel’s signature,” Falk added.

“Tel was certainly open to the move, but United weren’t prepared to pay the loan fee Bayern Munich were demanding at the time (€5m). So, you see, there was a huge difference to the offer Tottenham came to the table with.

“Whether Tel stays with Bayern beyond the summer or moves on, it’s entirely up to him. If he can make the step to United, he would like to do it. If he sees a chance at Bayern Munich, perhaps he would also stay, but I think it’s hard for him, as he didn’t make it under Vincent Kompany.

“So, I think if he is performing very well, he will stay in the Premier League. If he doesn’t, he has to go back to Bayern and start again.

“All in all, though, Bayern are the big winners in this case, as he wasn’t getting game time in Munich, so they’ll get some money from the loan, they don’t have to pay his salary, and, in the end, they get either a transfer fee or a player with Premier League experience. A good solution!”

Ex-United forward “hit with a jail sentence” after being pulled over by police in French region – report

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has been handed a four-month suspended sentence for “dangerous driving” after being stopped by police in Monaco during a night out last summer.

          The Theatre of Nightmares

Memphis joined the Red Devils in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven for £25 million after lighting up the Eredivisie as a flying winger.

However, the Dutch international never settled at Old Trafford, scoring only two goals across 33 appearances for United and struggling to adapt to the pace of English football.

After a disappointing eighteen months in Manchester, Memphis was then sold to Lyon for a fee worth in the region of £16 million.

The 30-year-old would go on to play for Liga giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, before eventually agreeing an unusual switch to Brazil to join Corinthians last summer, where the forward now earns a reported £170,000 a week.

          Legal Troubles

However, a month prior to this move to the Brazilian side was confirmed, Memphis was stopped by police in his Rolls-Royce after attending a night club in Monaco.

The Dutchman was “stopped by officers and breathalysed, with his blood alcohol level found to be 1.01 per millilitre – above the legal limit in Monaco, which is lower than in England and Wales, but the same as Scotland.”

As a result, Memphis received a “four-month suspended sentence after admitting an offence officially classified as ‘dangerous driving’” during a hearing this week.

He has been banned from driving for two years and ordered to pay a £7,5000 fine.

And while the 30-year-old did not attend the hearing himself, he addressed the situation in a post on Instagram.

“Last summer during my holidays in Monaco I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having some drinks in a restaurant.

“I should’ve got in a taxi instead but I didn’t so I would like to apologise and want to take full responsibility for my action. 2024 was a year of lessons and I will definitely learn from this one. 2025 we will do better. Memphis.”

“He has a problem”: Amorim confirms United will be without in-form star for FA Cup clash vs Leicester City

Manchester United will not be able to call upon the services of Altay Bayindir for their FA Cup game against Leicester City on Friday after the Turk picked up a knock.

Also unavailable for the encounter will be third-choice keeper Tom Heaton, who remains sidelined due to injury. Ruben Amorim confirmed the same to MUTV.

“Altay, I think, he has a problem. So he is not available for the game. Tom is also not for this game but he can play the other ones [in the future]. So the rest are ready. The important thing is we are ready to face the game.”

The Turkish international was on fire in the previous stage of the competition, pulling off two penalty saves and a host of stunning stops to thwart Arsenal and ensure the Red Devils entered Round four.

            Bayindir, Heaton out

Unlike Erik ten Hag, Amorim has not been afraid of placing his trust in the 26-year-old, handing him four starts in all competitions after only one start came under the former Dutch manager.

He also kept a clean sheet in his most recent start in the Europa League against FCSB. There have been murmurs that the Turkish star is looking for regular minutes and wants out with Galatasaray leading the chase.

So far, cup games is where he has shone and given Andre Onana’s problems in goal, Bayindir will have hoped for a Premier League debut by now.

Heaton, back at his boyhood club for his second spell, has managed three appearances but none of them have come in this term. He had signed a one-year extension last summer and this could be his final campaign for United.

            Onana start likely

This likely means Onana will start in goal against the Foxes. Mistakes have started creeping into the Cameroonian’s game with a few recent high-profile errors both in the Europa League as well as the Premier League.

For backup, Amorim has the promising Elyh Harrison, who the club decided to keep instead of loaning him out after an impressive six-month loan spell at Chester.

He was on the bench for the league game against Crystal Palace. There is also Hubert Graczyk, formerly of Arsenal, who has helped with the team’s warm-up before games recently in Heaton’s absence.

Dermot Mee has also trained with the first team and could make the matchday squad.

But the U21s are also in action at Leigh Sports Village against Tottenham Hotspur on Friday so that might dictate whom Amorim finally calls upon as backup.

Just two obstacles stand between United and victory over Leicester City in the FA Cup – Tactical Analysis

Manchester United will look to secure passage to the FA Cup quarterfinals as they host Leicester City at Old Trafford tonight.

Coming off a humiliating 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace last weekend, Man United’s string of disappointing results seems to be continuing to compound.

Still, this match should be a straightforward win for Ruben Amorim’s team, particularly given Leicester’s poor form.

While the Premier League strugglers upset Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-1 away win, this result was an outlier in recent times.

It is their only win in the past five Premier League matches compared to four resounding defeats. In those matches, Leicester scored just three goals while failing to find the back of the net in three matches.

Furthermore, Leicester conceded a mammoth 11 goals – over two goals per game on average. (Stats via Transfermarkt)

Given Leicester’s poor form in both defence and attack, the only barrier to victory for United seems to be their own shortfalls, of which there seem to be many.

In United’s defeat to Palace, they took 17 shots yet only one converted into a big chance. In contrast, Palace took just 11 shots, yet four were big chances.

This was a continuation of United’s poor attacking performance in the 1-0 win over Fulham when they took just four shots.

In yet another crushing home defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, United took 10 shots, with just one counting as a big chance. Yet again, the opposition made more of their opportunities, with four of Brighton’s six shots proving to be big chances in what was a crushing 3-1 defeat.

Not only is United’s shot tally low in recent times, but the team is also struggling to produce dangerous opportunities from the few chances they create. For those who closely observe United’s build-up play, it is clear that Amorim’s team hesitates when entering the final third, often slowing down their momentum and ultimately crumbling under defensive pressure.

What’s more, even when successfully beating defenders, United’s front line appears unwilling to take shots from long distances or tight angles, meaning that they allow multiple potential opportunities to fade away.

While United’s sluggish build-ups may have been sufficient to defeat Europa League opponents such as Rangers and FCSB, it is important to remember that these are weaker teams who do not have exposure to elite-level Premier League football as Leicester does.

Quicker attacking build-ups and more shots are required if United hope to penetrate Leicester’s defence.

Defensively, United are suffering from the same issues they always have.

Set pieces remain a constant disaster for the back line, with Palace opening the scoring last weekend from a free-kick.

Like a broken record player, testimonies on United’s set-piece vulnerability are constantly provided by pundits, Amorim, and his players alike, with very little progress being made to remedy this issue.

Overall, tonight’s match should be a straightforward victory for United, given Leicester’s weaker lineup and poor recent form. What’s worrying is that United’s poor shot-taking and set-piece awareness is what might lead to their downfall if Amorim does not address these constant concerns.

Heartbreak for Amorim as key target rules out switch to United after latest move – Fabrizio Romano

Long-term Manchester United target Nuno Mendes has signed a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain, putting an end to any distant hopes the Red Devils had of reuniting the Portuguese star with Ruben Amorim.

Mendes, 22, established himself as one of the best defensive prospects in Europe under Amorim at Sporting CP, thriving in the left wing-back role in the 39-year-old’s 3-4-3 system.

This position is a particularly challenging one, as the current cohort of fullbacks at Old Trafford have found out, given the demands to provide attacking threat and defensive solidity simultaneously.

In possession, the wing-backs must operate like wingers, offering width and a constant overlap behind the opposition defence. But when the ball is lost, they must instantly transition into fullback mode to help support the defence.

It requires high degrees of physical intensity and technical ability to be able to perform this role; which is why United were so keen to reunite Amorim with Mendes, who demonstrated this potent pairing in abundance in Lisbon.

Mendes’ form was so good at left wing-back, it earned him a blockbuster move to Ligue 1 champions PSG in 2021.

                A Window of Opportunity

The Portuguese international signed a five-year deal in the French capital, meaning his contract was set to expire in 2026. This meant this summer would have constituted the final window for PSG to bank a significant transfer fee for their defender, if a new deal could not be agreed.

And this window of opportunity had put Old Trafford officials on red-alert over the possibility of securing their head coach the ideal solution to his ongoing issues at left wing-back with his new squad, with reports suggesting Mendes was open to the switch.

However, a deal proved too costly for United’s limited finances and there was a feeling that Mendes’ agents were utilising the link to secure a better long-term contract extension in Paris; which, Fabrizio Romano reveals, is exactly what happened.

Mendes Set to Remain in Paris

The Italian transfer guru states the Portuguese international has “signed [a] new deal” with PSG which will make him one of the club’s “top earners”.

🚨🔴🔵 EXCLUSIVE: Nuno Mendes has signed new deal at Paris Saint-Germain!

While this never felt like a realistic transfer, the fact that Mendes was the perfect profile of player to fix a problem position at Old Trafford explains why the club considered an approach nonetheless.

After a deal was deemed unworkable for Mendes, United quickly settled on Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu as their primary target in the January window, eventually agreeing a £30 million deal for the Danish international.

Postecoglou gone after Aston Villa defeat? Spurs’ next 10 matches ranked by sack likelihood

Tottenham have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, leaving Ange Postecoglou in a desperate position with Aston Villa in the FA Cup up next.

Postecoglou essentially promised Spurs fans a trophy with a bold ‘I always win something in my second season’ claim earlier in the campaign. The Carabao Cup was the most realistic target but meeting Liverpool in the semi-final of the competition was only going to end one way – even after they won the first leg 1-0 at home.

This leaves the former Celtic manager needing to win in the FA Cup fourth-round tie away to Aston Villa, which is easier said than done. Sure, Villa have a similarly poor record in domestic cup competitions and Postecoglou’s record against Unai Emery is decent, winning 4-1 in the Premier League this season after a 4-0 victory at Villa Park in March 2024; Spurs lost the other game 2-1 at home despite taking the lead.

It feels like everything hinges on the Villa match, though Spurs are still in the Europa League and somehow mustered up a top-eight finish to qualify for the last 16, where they will face one of Real Sociedad, FC Midtjylland, Galatasaray or AZ Alkmaar.

Daniel Levy has been turning a blind eye to the club’s Premier League form, which means the Europa League and FA Cup fixtures take precedent in our thinking, but there is only so long the Spurs owner can ignore the genuine threat of relegation. The fixture list looks bleak and it is difficult to see where the points come from, with only one ‘easy’ match between now and the end of the season, which is still a fixture that, as history tells us, could easily be Postecoglou’s last.

With that in mind, we have ranked Tottenham’s next ten fixtures by how likely they are to get Big Ange sacked.

READ MOREWho will be the next manager of Tottenham after Ange Postecoglou?

                  10) Manchester United (h) – Premier League, February 16
This is one of the more El Sackico fixtures in recent Premier League history and it would rank much higher if it wasn’t the first match after Aston Villa in the FA Cup. If Postecoglou survives that, he will probably pull through a defeat here.

Any Spurs v Man United fixture hinges on which teamdisplays less stupidity, with both sides putting that to the test in their bonkers Carabao Cup quarter-final which gave us eight goals, some comical Fraser Forster playing out from the back and flimsy goalkeeping from Altay Bayindir.

Whatever the outcome, we know this will be an unmissable match contested by two very unserious football clubs.

                  9) Manchester City (h) – Premier League, February 26
Losing at home to Man City would not be the end of the world but there is a possibility of it being an embarrassing result, which is why this fixture is not tenth.

We are all well aware of City’s struggles this season but we also well aware that they can still turn it on and against a leaky Spurs defence, that is less of a possibility than a probability.

Spurs’ record against the champions at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is impressive. A 4-0 win at the Etihad earlier this season also defied logic and their overall record in this fixture is completely baffling. City did win twice at Spurs last season, though, in the only two victories at the north Londoners’ lovely new stadium for Pep Guardiola. That is a bad sign but Postecoglou did earn a 2-1 home victory in the Carabao Cup last October.

City at home comes on a Wednesday night in between a trip to Ipswich and hosting Bournemouth at home, which we feel are more important.

                  8) Chelsea (a) – Premier League, April 2
Stamford Bridge has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs and in Postecoglou’s first season at the club, they lost 2-0 during a run of four consecutive defeats and 13 goals conceded. It is hard to look beyond another defeat at their London rivals when they lock horns. In truth, it is hard to look beyond defeat in every match.

There are similarities to the City fixture in that the manner of defeat could be what gets Postecoglou sacked, though London derbies do heed much more importance. A prospect of an embarrassing defeat at the Bridge will keep Postecoglou up at night.

                  7) Fulham (a) – Premier League, March 16
A trip to Craven Cottage is daunting these days, with potential future Spurs manager Marco Silva doing a fine job down there, by the way. Fulham have been mightily impressive at times but they remain an enigma. Draws against Arsenal and Liverpool were backed up with another at home to Southampton before a win at Chelsea earlier this term. They are so weird.

Their split personality makes for an intriguing match up on the day of the Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle United.

We don’t know which Fulham will turn up and we are even more clueless about the potential state of play at Spurs. As the ranking suggests, Postecoglou could be long gone before this fixture.

Considering some of Spurs’ results this season, defeat away to Fulham would hardly be a shock or the straw that broke the camel’s back. This match finished 3-0 to the Cottagers in 2023/24, six days after a 4-0 Spurs triumph at Aston Villa, because Tottenham.

If Spurs lose here and Postecoglou is sacked as a result, it would not be a surprise if Silva becomes Levy’s top managerial target.

                  6) Bournemouth (h) – Premier League, March 9
Speaking of which, nothing would scream Spurs more than Daniel Levy watching Andoni Iraola pull Postecoglou’s pants down, finally lose patience (or have a lightbulb above the head moment), sack Ange mate and aggressively pursue Iraola, only to be laughed at and kindly told to p*ss off.

Bournemouth are a fantastic side with a promising young coach and although this fixture is not for a while, it is hard to look beyond an away victory on another memorable afternoon for Iraola and his players.

You could argue that Spurs and Bournemouth’s campaigns are the wrong way around, with the latter pushing for a Champions League place and the former lingering hopelessly in the bottom half. This is little ol’ Bournemouth after all!

That last point is obviously complete rubbish but the Cherries are punching above their weight while Spurs flirt with a year (or longer) in the Championship, which Postecoglou will probably be there for.

                  5) Ipswich (a) – Premier League, February 22
If there is a game that will make Levy sit up and realise what is happening, it is another defeat to Ipswich Town in the Premier League. Just how that wasn’t the case the first time around is anyone’s guess.

Spurs handed Ipswich their first victory of the season back in November and there was no doubt that Kieran McKenna’s side deserved to win that day. Ipswich have shown more away from home this term, with their only home win and second of two clean sheets coming against Chelsea, which does give Spurs some hope at least.

When Spurs roll into town we do fancy them with a couple of key players hopefully back from injury.

Injuries are something we have not touched on but are surely crucial in Levy’s thought process, just as the hope of a trophy is/was. The crisis has been extraordinary – and partly Postecoglou’s fault through his philosophy and bringing players back too soon – and if results do not improve when Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario return, there is officially no excuse.

                  4) Southampton (h) – Premier League, April 5
Southampton in the Premier League can be fatal for Spurs managers – just ask Antonio Conte.

Surely, I mean surely, Spurs can beat Southampton at home? We could be looking at the worst team in Premier League history – somehow worse than Derby bloody County. Not Spurs, by the way. Easy mistake to make.

At the time of writing, Saints need three points to beat Derby’s record low 11 points. Not to worry, Dr Tottenham will see you soon.

                  3 and 2) Unknown – Europa League, March 6 (a) and 13 (h)
All of Spurs’ eggs will be in the Europa basket if they are knocked out of the FA Cup, and it is a winnable competition. There are no Champions League dropouts anymore and the current bookies favourites are Manchester United. Yes, Actual Manchester United – ahead of Actual Tottenham Hotspur in second. It truly is a joke competition now.

Outside of the two Premier League comedy acts, there are some dangerous teams. Athletic Club are obviously a threat with the Williams brothers and their Basque underdog persona; there are 2021 winners Eintracht Frankfurt, albeit without Omar Marmoush now; Lazio, Real Sociedad, AS Roma, Lyon, FC Porto, Rangers and Galatasaray – who were the only team to beat Spurs in the league phase with a 3-2 scoreline that very much flattered the Londoners – are all in with a shout.

Spurs will face one of Sociedad, Midtjylland, Gala or AZ away on March 6 after those four play their play-off ties. Midtjylland would obviously be ideal but lads, it’s Tottenham – they are obviously getting trounced by Galatasaray again.

                  1) Aston Villa (a) – FA Cup
This really feels like do or die for Postecoglou, even with a Europa League last-16 match around the corner. The big man has played a blinder with his September trophy claim; it feels like the main reason Levy is yet to pull the trigger. Either the Spurs owner has an unholy amount of faith in his manager, it’s a remarkably risky experiment or he doesn’t fancy the aggro.

You have to feel that relying on a Europa League triumph after being knocked out of both domestic cup competitions in the same week is a risk too far. Spurs have found respite in Europe but that is not enough for Big Ange to convince Levy he can deliver a trophy while simultaneously lifting the club up the Premier League table during the dreaded Thursday-Sunday schedule.

Perhaps Postecoglou could learn from his Europa success by playing the young and hungry academy graduates against Villa and then in the league if he survives that test. Mikey Moore has been a rare bright spot this season but has not been given enough of a chance domestically, while Dane Scarlett and Damola Ajayi scored in the recent win over Elfsborg.

Giving them big minutes at Villa Park is a Hail Mary but that might be what saves the Australian boss.

Villa last won the FA Cup in 1957 and have an abysmal recent record in the competition. Since being battered by Arsenal in the final under Tim Sherwood a decade ago, the Villans have not made it beyond the fourth round, losing in the third round seven times, including defeats to Stevenage in 2022/23 and Peterborough in 2017/18.

That should give Spurs some vain hope but we are talking about a club without a major trophy since 2008. At least it’s not 1996 like Villa.

Their recent record and trophy drought makes Unai Emery’s side just as eager and desperate for victory, which is what will likely cost Postecoglou his job. Marcus Rashford hat-trick incoming.

Tottenham spanking by Liverpool sees them top ranking of PL clubs by FA Cup desire ahead of Man Utd

It’s the fourth round of the FA Cup and there are 17 Premier League teams left after Arsenal, Brentford and West Ham fell at the first hurdle.

But which of those remaining should give a damn about The Oldest Competition In World Football? We’ve ranked them by the level of sh*ts given, from least to most.

                    17) Wolves
Vitor Pereira won’t want to lose to Blackburn on Sunday because losing is rubbish, but if Wolves were offered the opportunity to not play in the FA Cup he would surely take up that option.

                    16) Nottingham Forest
They’ve gone from ignoring the FA Cup with a view to survive in the Premier League to ignoring it with designs on Champions League football in the space of a season. Incredible.

                    15) Leicester
We imagine Ruud van Nistelrooy is rather more keen on Leicester being in the hat for the fifth round than the majority of Foxes stakeholders. With the 6-2 victory over QPR one of just two results – along with the 2-1 win over Spurs – to break up a run of eight defeats, he must have questioned his decision to take on the job at the King Power Stadium on several occasions over the last couple of months.

Getting one over on the man who sent him packing from Old Trafford would offer sweet respite from the creeping doubts over his future in management. But he will be aware that beating Ruben Amorim and Manchester United in the FA Cup is a rather less pressing need than picking up Premier League points in a relegation battle.

                    14) Bournemouth
They’re currently three points off the top four and just one point off fifth spot, which currently looks likely to be enough for Champions League football next season. We wouldn’t give our blessing to any club throwing in the FA Cup towel, but if anyone is worthy of forgiveness in doing so it’s little ol’ Bournemouth and Andoni Iraola, who has his eyes on a much bigger (or at least far more lucrative) prize.

                    13) Ipswich
Kalvin Phillips will act as the barometer for sh*ts given by Kieran McKenna; we expect him to start this game.

                    12) Aston Villa
Thirty years is a long time without a trophy but while they remain in the Champions League that should be their focus; qualifying for Europe next season will be next up in the list of priorities for Unai Emery and his side. Absolutely worth tuning in for the Tottenham game to see Marcus Rashford’s debut.

                    11) Manchester City
While Pep Guardiola would ideally like to avoid a potless season for the first time since his debut campaign in English football, which will surely be the case if they’re knocked out by Leyton Orient on Saturday, we’re guessing he and the Manchester City bosses are rather more concerned with qualification for next season’s Champions League and its PSR knock-on effects.

                    10) Liverpool
F*** it, why not? They look like they’re going to win everything else at a canter and have somehow discovered how to avoid injuries entirely, so while the quadruple remains a possibility Arne Slot may as well go for it, or rather not fail to go for it, which will be enough for them to claim the gong at this rate.

READ MORE: Imperious Mo Salah odds-on for third PFA Footballer of the Year award

                    9) Southampton
They’re going down so may as well go all out against Burnley, before waving at them as they yo-yo in opposite directions at the end of the season.

                    8) Everton
David Moyes has returned and suddenly we like Everton again. We would like nothing more than seeing him decked out in a cute little suit at Wembley at the end of the season, and after a quite brilliant start to his second Toffees spell, which sees them now nine points clear of the relegation zone, they may as well give it a go.

READ MORE: David Moyes Knows The Club and at Everton that’s not a p***-take

                    7) Chelsea
For a club with winning supposedly in its blood, Chelsea haven’t won for a while, and having lost their last six Wembley finals they’re starting to get a reputation as The Nearly Men of English football, with the domestic cup spotlight very much on them following the efforts of the billion-pound bottle jobs in the Carabao final last season.

A return to the Champions League is obviously the priority, so Enzo Maresca may hand responsibility over to the Conference League side against Brighton, but Cole Palmer should be given the chance to shiver if they get past the Seagulls, if not before.

                    6) Brighton
They’ve made the semi-finals twice since promotion to the Premier League but the fans would dearly love to win a trophy to give them something tangible to show for their extraordinary rise. They’re also currently in that Might As Well group in mid-table who could qualify for Europe but probably won’t, and Fabian Hurzeler – though not in immediate danger of losing his job – would love a marquee win over Chelsea after the 7-0 shellacking by Nottingham Forest.

                    5) Crystal Palace
They’ve not won a domestic trophy and we’re guessing the Palace fans would dearly love a new Wembley memory to rid them of the image of Alan Pardew dancing with them 1-0 up against Manchester United before heartbreaking defeat nine years ago. In the Not Getting Relegated But Can’t Qualify For Europe sweet spot for FA Cup focus.

                    4) Newcastle
Their wonderfully comfortable win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup reduces the need slightly but they would have been hoping against hope that Tottenham could cling to their slender lead against Liverpool.

It wasn’t to be and while they’ve got a decent chance in a one-off game against Arne Slot’s high-flying Reds and Eddie Howe may be tempted to take most of the Magpie eggs out of the FA Cup basket as he balances the unbridled desire for a trophy with the PSR-enforced need for Champions League football, they could do with keeping their name in the hat until the Carabao Cup final at least.

                    3) Fulham
They’ve never won a domestic cup and haven’t made a final since their FA Cup defeat to West Ham in 1975, and having got a bit of a taste for it last season, when Liverpool knocked them out in the Carabao semi-final, a cup run after victory over Wigan on Saturday would be firmly in the That Would Be Nice category for Fulham fans.

They would also thoroughly enjoy some European away days, though are probably pragmatic enough to know that qualification is unlikely through the Premier League despite their fine season so far.

                    2) Manchester United
Ruben Amorim needs to win games of football as the manager of Manchester United. He’s managed just nine in 19 games so far and it needs to happen no matter the competition. He will look at the ill-advised patience and leeway afforded to Erik ten Hag courtesy of his two cup victories and fancy a bit of that.

Although the Premier League is the bread and butter, he may well look at their position and think European football is already beyond them while relegation surely, SURELY isn’t on the cards. Maybe he can save his Kobbie-Mainoo-at-No.9-type experimentation madness for the league and field his best team in the cup competitions in a bid to have something to show for what otherwise looks set to be a harrowing first season in English football.

                    1) Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou’s ill-advised insistence that he “always wins a trophy in the second season” took a significant hit on Thursday as he watched his Tottenham side get battered by Liverpool in a wholly predictable tie-turning game at Anfield.

It leaves him with two remaining trophy chances – the Europa League and the FA Cup – and while on current form we wouldn’t give them a cat in hell’s chance of winning either, if they can somehow find the requisite quality and energy to beat Aston Villa on Sunday, by the time the fifth round comes around at the end of February they may well have some key players back to give them a boost and drive them towards that first gong since 2008.

INEOS sent into a frenzy as Europe’s hottest forward wants to “make the step” to United this summer – report

Manchester United will get a “second chance” to sign Mathys Tel this summer as the French starlet was “certainly open to a move” to Old Trafford in January, according to German football expert.

A red-hot transfer race emerged for Tel at the end of the winter window after the 19-year-old pushed for a shock exit from Bayern Munich.

The versatile attacker had grown increasingly frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities under Die Roten manager Vincent Kompany.

And Tel instructed his representatives to look for a move away from the Allianz Arena, with a host of clubs across Europe expressing an interest in the highly-rated youngster.

United wanted to sign the Frenchman on loan to buttress Ruben Amorim’s misfiring forward line. The club’s finances would not enable a transfer, though Old Trafford officials were open to a buy clause in the deal to enable a permanent move come the summer.

However, it was Premier League rival Tottenham Hotspur who clinched the deal for Tel, agreeing to pay a €10 million loan fee. United are reported to have walked away from negotiations with the fee at just €5 million, underscoring the Lilywhites’ willingness to secure Bayern star.

Spurs have a buy-option in the agreement for Tel, though the 19-year-old retains autonomy to end the loan deal if he chooses.

And, despite having just arrived in North London, Bundesliga expert Christian Falk reveals Tel would push for a move to Manchester in the summer if the opportunity presented itself.

“Whether Tel stays with Bayern beyond the summer or moves on, it’s entirely up to him. If he can make the step to United, he would like to do it,” Falk states

The reporter also contends a return to the Allianz Arena is possible, though less likely than a permanent exit: “If he sees a chance at Bayern Munich, perhaps he would also stay, but I think it’s hard for him, as he didn’t make it under Vincent Kompany.”

Falk concludes, “So, I think if he is performing very well, he will stay in the Premier League.”

The Red Devils hold a long-standing interest in Tel as the youngster has been a player on the club’s radar since he emerged in France for Ligue 1 side Rennes. There was an approach last year over a potential move, which was rebuffed, and then rekindled last month after Tel’s unexpected push to leave.

If United sense the possibility of another return for the French starlet, it will be difficult for the club’s hierarchy to resist, particularly given the ongoing issues in the forward positions at Old Trafford.
