United face nightmare scenario of losing long-term target to Liverpool this summer – report

Long-term Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong could be on his ways to arch-rivals Liverpool.

The Red Devils have had a long-standing interest in the Dutch midfielder, dating back to Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge in 2022.

United agreed a deal with FC Barcelona to sign the midfielder but De Jong refused to move as he was happy to stay in Catalonia.

Over the years however, his influence has waned in the Barcelona team and it has been reported that La Blaugrana would be keen to offload him and his eye-watering wages.

United have recently been linked with making a move for the midfielder on a free transfer next year when his contract expires.

Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be lurking in the background for the former Ajax player.

CaughtOffside now report that United may face even stiffer competition for the midfield maestro.

Liverpool are thought to be keen on strengthening their midfield and have discussed numerous options. “Among those is Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, CaughtOffside understands, though there could be an issue with the Netherlands international’s wages.”

“De Jong could be available for around €35m as Barca are prepared to part ways with him, but he’s been on a high salary at the Nou Camp and that’s put off Liverpool and other clubs in the past.”

The Red Devils will certainly be keen on midfield reinforcements in the summer as only Manuel Ugarte has fully adapted to Amorim’s demands from his two central midfielders.

Bruno Fernandes has played quite well but United lack a certain threat in attack when their captain starts the game so far from goal.

Whether De Jong would be a potential option for United in the summer is yet to be seen but it would certainly be tough viewing for supporters of the club to see the player they have so publicly chased for a long time suit up in the red of Liverpool next year.
