Manchester United reportedly failed with an attempt to sign Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus in the ‘final hours’ of the winter transfer window.

Luiz has struggled since joining Juventus from Aston Villa last summer.

His departure from Villa Park was ultimately down to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with the Villans desperate to raise funds.

They signed Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus in return and sent the former on loan to Bologna and the latter to Valencia.

Iling-Junior had his loan terminated in January and he has joined Middlesbrough for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

Anyway, back to Luiz and it has not been a happy time for him since moving to Turin.

The 26-year-old has been unable to nail down a starting spot in Thiago Motta’s team and has zero goal contributions in 19 appearances across all competitions.

There is now a chance for him to impress after a difficult six months, with fellow midfielder Nicolo Fagioli joining Fiorentina on loan.

Fagioli might only have two more starts than the Brazilian in Serie A this season but there are more minutes up for grabs, and Motta appears to have faith in Luiz filling the void.

That is because, despite being reportedly interested in selling Luiz in January, Juventus turned down an offer from Manchester United.

That is according to Italian transfer expert Nicolo Schira, who says the Red Devils ‘offered an expensive loan with the option to buy’.

However, Juve ‘turned down the bid’, which came ‘in the last hours of the winter transfer window’.

As touched on already, Luiz’s minutes should increase in the second half of the season.

A separate report from Goal Italia says Motta is expected to start the Brazilian midfielder more often and the player’s physical problems ‘seem to have been resolved’.

Man Utd only signed Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu in January, despite crying out for a new striker.

The funds were not there to be spent in Ruben Amorim’s first transfer window at the club due to the aforementioned PSR.

Amorim had hoped to sell Marcus Rashford but the England winger only earned a loan move in the winter window, joining Luiz’s former club Aston Villa.

Alejandro Garnacho was another Man Utd player who was strongly linked with an exit, with Chelsea believed to be keen.

A transfer failed to come to fruition after the Red Devils demanded at least £60million for the Argentine winger.

Man Utd’s next match is against Leicester City, who are now managed by Red Devils legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy took charge of four Man Utd games between Erik ten Hag’s sacking and Amorim’s appointment, defeating Leicester before going on to replace Steve Cooper as their head coach.

Man Utd: Ruben Amorim admits to ‘taking risk’ with one transfer decision; demands ‘more’ from three stars

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has admitted that he’s “taken a risk” since joining the Premier League giants and he wants “more” from three players.

Amorim left Sporting Lisbon to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd towards the end of 2024 and has endured a rough start at Old Trafford.

Under the 39-year-old, the Red Devils have eight wins in their last 19 matches in all competitions as they are 14th in the Premier League form table.

United’s head coach has faced difficulties while implementing his preferred 3-4-3 formation at Man Utd and their inactivity in the winter transfer window has added to his woes.

Man Utd only made one major signing as they bought left wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Serie A outfit for around £25m. They have also snatched 18-year-old Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.

Ahead of United’s FA Cup tie against Leicester City on Friday night, Amorim has claimed he decided to “take the risk” of not making loads of signings in January.

“We are taking a risk but we want a different thing in the team, different profiles. It was my decision to do that,” Amorim said.

“I’m not naive, I said that many times, this is a sport of results and we are in a difficult situation.

“I know when I chose this profession that you have the risk of results and I knew when I came here I look at the schedule.

“I look at the team, my decision changing everything in the middle of the season without new signings is a danger for a coach, but I have a clear idea of what I want to do and I take these risks because in the end it’s going to pay off.”

On his forward options, he added: “We have to find players to play in different positions, you can see the way we play it’s going to take time and not solve all the problems, we have many shots inside the box and catch one player.

“Amad [Diallo] can score more, Bruno [Fernandes] can score more, Kobbie Mainoo can score more playing in that position on the pitch. We have to improve as a team, we have a little bit of time.”

Amorim has also revealed whether Dorgu and/or Heaven will feature against Leicester City on Friday night.

“We’ll see [regarding Patrick Dorgu and/or Ayden Heaven playing against Leicester City], you guys have to wait until tomorrow but they are ready to play and are two more solutions in this moment,” Amorim continued.

When reflecting on United’s work during the January window, he said: “What I feel is that the club is taking its time.

“We know the urgency of the moment of the team, everybody here doesn’t want to make the same mistakes of the past, in the summer we will see but like I said we are being really careful with transfers because we made some mistakes in the past.”

Van Nistelrooy fires six-word warning to Amorim ahead of FA Cup showdown

Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned Ruben Amorim, that he knows the Manchester United players “inside out” and doesn’t need to analyse them ahead of Friday’s FA Cup meeting.

The former United striker, coach and interim manager will make his return to Old Trafford for the first time since his departure in November, following Amorim’s appointment as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.

In the immediate aftermath of Ten Hag’s sacking, Van Nistelrooy took charge of four United games, winning three and drawing one.

He repeatedly declared his intention to remain at the club and be a member of Amorim’s backroom staff but the Portuguese coach had other ideas.

Amorim elected to work with his own coaches from Sporting Lisbon. Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy was appointed Leicester boss in December, succeeding Steve Cooper.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Van Nistelrooy remarked [via LeicestershireLive], “It’s special to go back there. I have history as a player, as an assistant, as a caretaker.”

“My focus is on my players and my team, to get the best out of them and to show what we’re about, in the fight and in the spirit.”

The Dutchman added, “I’m glad I don’t have to analyse the Manchester United squad. I’ll leave that to Ruben. We have prepared for them and I know the squad inside out.”

Asked to give his verdict on the fact United have lost five of their last seven home games, Van Nistelrooy answered, “We have our own issues. We have to look at us.”

“I don’t believe in sequences. You can always win a game after you’ve lost a couple. We want to represent ourselves in the best way possible.”

In terms of injuries, Van Nistelrooy told reporters that there are only two or three players with “light” issues who would be assessed before the match.

United vs. Leicester kicks off at 20:00 GMT.

Rashford’s dream move to Camp Nou in danger following strong Barcelona dressing room reaction – report

After weeks of negotiating with Barcelona, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford eventually headed to Aston Villa on loan on deadline day.

The Mancunian dropped a bombshell on the club when he admitted he was open to leaving in January after Ruben Amorim dropped him from the Manchester derby matchday squad.

There was interest from plenty of European sides but the forward made it clear that he was only looking to move to Barcelona.

For the move to occur, the Catalan giants had to make space in their wage bill by moving multiple players on but eventually they failed to do so and distanced themselves from a winter transfer for the Englishman.

Barcelona chased Rashford all through the January window

And the Carrington graduate was forced to head to Birmingham to link up with Unai Emery with Villa having the chance to make the move permanent in the summer.

As relayed by The Peoples Person, the England international is still dreaming of a summer move to the Catalan giants but there might be some bad news in store for him should he eventually make the move there.

As per SPORT, Barca stars were far from impressed with their club’s pursuit of the 27-year-old as instead of rewarding loyalty, Barcelona were ready to use their newfound financial freedom to bring in another star.

Plenty of Barcelona stars have had to forego a part of their wages or have agreed to lower their demands to stay at the club during their difficult financial spell and they wanted to be recognised instead of the club going after another asset.

“According to the program ‘Barça Reservat‘ on Catalunya Ràdio, the decision of the Catalan club to go for the English striker did not go down well with those closest to the players in the current Barça squad, namely their representation agencies and relatives.

“The information from the podcast on current affairs at Barça points out that there was a ‘raise of the hand’ from those around players such as Pedri, Gavi and Araujo, who have ended up renewing in recent weeks.

          Eventually they opted out

“It was done to show their concern that the club was going for names like Rashford during a more favourable economic situation after returning to 1-1 with the sale of the VIP seats at the Spotify Camp Nou instead of regularising the situation of the current members of Hansi Flick’s team.

“After expressing this concern, according to ‘Barça Reservat‘, Deco and the sports management focused on ensuring the continuity of the team’s backbone and normalizing the contracts to the club’s current economic situation.”

Eventually, Deco opted to offer contract renewals to quite a few players, who the club were initially looking to offload in order to fund a move for the former United No 10.

The same problem is likely to rear its head again in the summer and it remains to be seen if an approach for Rashford is made. Firstly, the player needs to return to his best in order for such a scenario to even occur.

Man Utd transfers: Flop ‘open’ to permanent transfer away from Old Trafford but it relies on key talks

Man Utd transfers: Flop ‘open’ to permanent transfer away from Old Trafford but it relies on key talks

Manchester United winger Antony has opened up on a potential permanent transfer away from the club after signing for Real Betis on loan.

The Brazilian, who signed for United in a deal worth £86million in 2022, completed a six-month loan deal to the Spanish club in the January transfer window.

Before that, he had started just one game in the Europa League and none in the Premier League, emphasising his position as a player on the fringes. His 12 goals and five assists in 96 games was a shocking return on an incredible investment.

With Ruben Amorim failing to utilise him, he was linked with an exit, both permanently and on loan, with Betis being able to complete a short-term deal – but it may become permanent in the future.

Especially after his flying start, which saw him awarded the Man of the Match award in Betis’ 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao.

Antony spoke to the Spanish media out AS in what was his first open interview after leaving United and he was seemingly overjoyed to have a change of scenery and a chance to start fresh.

He said: “I had other offers, but when Betis appeared I felt a certainty in my heart that made me stay calm. I am happy here and I want to achieve many goals.

“I am happy here for everyone, for the manager and the players. I feel calm and confident.”

He believes he has the platform now to start finding his form, commenting: “I want to find my best version and the first step is to be happy. Everything here is incredible, my family and I are happy. Now it is time to work to be in my best version and help the club.”

He said: “If I have to stay longer, I would have to talk to the president and everything. And for now I want to play and score goals and give assists.”

Underlining that he first needs to prove himself, he clarified: “I have to help the team, later we can talk about that.”

            Man United’s reshuffle in attack

With Antony exiting alongside Marcus Rashford (both on loan) and with the club likely to lose Jadon Sancho after his loan ends at Chelsea, the club are somewhat lacking in the wider areas.

The emergence of Amad Diallo has been a rare positive for the club, but Alejandro Garnacho was linked with moves to multiple clubs across the January window, which insinuates a future move away could well be on the cards in the summer.

After that, they are struggling and need real investment in those areas. Amorim’s system requires a different profile of attacker than the typical winger and the next window will answer a lot of questions for the fans.

Plus, we’ve seen reports that Rasmus Holjund may be free to leave as well, opening up another spot in attack, which represents another transfer quandary that ensures the club have plenty of work to do in recruitment.

United plotting blockbuster summer swoop for 21yo “incredible” PL midfield maestro, City also in the fray – report

Manchester United are in need of a midfield revamp next summer given the fact that this campaign is likely to be both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen’s final one in red.

Ruben Amorim has hardly offered the Brazilian chances, mentioning his lack of intensity as a reason with his cameo against FCSB his first appearance in over a month.

The Dane has started back-to-back Europa League games but his contract ends in the summer and there are no plans of offering him a new deal while the head coach was seemingly open to his departure in the winter window.

According to Teamtalk, the Red Devils are looking at Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace to help fill the void. They will be scouting the Eagles ace during the second-half of the season before proceeding with a formal offer.

United to scout Wharton following injury return

The 21-year-old has been on the club’s radar since his Blackburn Rovers days and an approach was likely given his initial form for Oliver Glasner’s side but a recent groin injury and subsequent surgery has meant further observation will be required to assess the Englishman’s suitability.

United will not be the only Premier League side who will keep a close watch on the England international with Manchester City and Newcastle also joining the race for the “incredible” midfield talent.

Palace parted with £18 million to land him last year and they are in no rush to move him on and will be looking to earn a hefty profit next summer given the interest he has generated.

“Manchester United are still interested in Adam Wharton, TEAMtalk understands, with sources telling us Crystal Palace’s stance on selling the midfielder and also naming two other major Premier League clubs who are keen.

“The England international was expected to raise his game even more this season, but a groin problem saw him undergo surgery which has affected his progress and development. Wharton is back to full fitness now and is expected to play a big role for Palace in the second half of the season.

“TEAMtalk understands that Man Utd are planning to keep tabs on Wharton in the coming weeks and months and assess how the English youngster does.

City, Newcastle also in the race

“However, sources have told us that it is not just Man Utd who are going to scout Wharton. Defending Premier League champions Manchester City and top-four hopefuls Newcastle United are also planning to watch Wharton in the second half of the season with a view to a potential move in the summer of 2025.”

Wharton can play as a defensive midfielder as well as further forward if required with his reading of the game praised by many, which eventually saw former Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate offer him his national team debut in 2024.

The 20-time English league champions can certainly do with someone of his talents and his homegrown status would also be something INEOS would prefer.

A potential midfield partnership with Kobbie Mainoo could form the team’s bedrock for years to come, a salivating prospect to say the least.

These two impossible demands from Marcus Rashford saw January loan deal with Inter Milan collapse – report

After a drawn-out negotiation process, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford ultimately decided to join Aston Villa on loan in the January window.

The club were forced to start hunting for a new home for the Mancunian after he publicly expressed his desire for a new challenge away from his boyhood club.

That infamous interview followed days after Ruben Amorim decided to drop the Englishman from the Manchester derby matchday squad citing training issues and off-field problems.

In his endeavour to find a new home, the 27-year-old’s agents spoke to multiple European clubs owing to INEOS’ desire to avoid selling to a direct domestic rival.

                Rashford was offered to Inter

Barcelona was where the Carrington graduate wanted to move but they could not muster the finances required to fund a January approach and Rashford’s agents, in desperation, even offered his services to Inter Milan as per Sky Sports.

This was relayed by FCInter1908 with the Nerazzurri directors distancing themselves from a potential deal owing to the player’s humongous wages, of which United would not pay a dime.

The England international also demanded a starting role and with Inter still employing Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa, there was no space for the former United No 10.

“The Nerazzurri directors spoke with the agents of Rashford, Asensio, Joao Felix and who knows how many others but in the end, having no space in the offensive department, they had to decline and postpone everything until the summer when the contracts of Correa and Arnautovic will expire.

                Inter rejected the offer

“The most attractive of the names proposed was Asensio, who could have played as a second striker, but also as a mezzala. The cost of his salary was around 9 million. Taking him would probably have meant giving up something in June.

“And so, after the refusals of the two outgoing players, Inter decided not to force the situation. Rashford, on the other hand, was even more expensive and with demands for a starting role.”

Despite linking up with Unai Emery at Villa, reports have swirled around stating that Rashford remains hell-bent on moving to the Camp Nou in the summer even though the Birmingham club have the option of making the loan deal permanent.

A lot will depend of whether the versatile forward can recapture his best form for the Champions League outfit. A return to United has been ruled out completely.

Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim has major squad problem that can’t be fixed until the summer

                  man-utd-news:-ruben-amorim-has-major-squad-problem-that-can’t-be-fixed-until-the-summer
Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim has major squad problem that can’t be fixed until the summer

Manchester United are currently suffering a leadership crisis and Ruben Amorim is powerless to fix it, says Stan Collymore.

The former Liverpool striker has claimed that the United squad are missing that one true leader who can help lift the team.

In recent years, United have fallen prey to consistently poor performances in the Premier League and Europe, but they did manage to win the FA Cup in 2024 to add to their League Cup in 2023.

Nevertheless, they have finished eighth and sixth in two of the past three seasons and look set to struggle to grasp the top 10 at their current rate.

One key issue is a lack of leaders; other teams in the Premier League have a wealth of strong characters, with Liverpool boasting nine players who have worn the armband for their countries and the majority of those are in the first team.

United’s history boasts some incredible captains such as Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Bryan Robson, Gary Neville and Eric Cantona, to name a few but the current crop pales in comparison to those strong, legendary figures.

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Collymore explored the idea that there are no real leaders in the United side, singling out Fernandes and Maguire as two players who have failed to step up.

‘I think that captaincy and leadership is the major issue that Amorim needs to get to grips with.

‘Obviously Harry Maguire was bought in as a leader but he’s had off-field issues and lots of injuries as well, so he hasn’t really been the consistent eight or nine out of 10 leader that you’d want.

‘I don’t think Bruno Fernandes is captain material either. I just don’t. I look at him and think if I’m in a dressing room with him I’m not going to hang on every word he says, and he isn’t going to go into the trenches in put in a shift.

‘I know a lot of people may think that the days of a Roy Keane-type captain are dead but I just don’t think Bruno Fernandes’ performances, his ability to lead and his ability to cajole that extra 5% out of players is proven.’

                  Fixing their squad issues

With this summer transfer window likely to see a squad overhaul, it stands as the perfect time to add some key experience to the first team to help counter their problem.

However, attacking recruits are unlikely to help directly add leaders, which typically come from the central midfield and defensive positions, which means if they do strengthen in those areas, experienced figures are needed.

Their interest in Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace’s captain, would be a strong start given his proven experience in the top flight and with England.

Plus, Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who thrived under Amorim at Sporting, is also a club captain who has been linked with a move.

Picture: Amorim calls up “lightning quick” academy ace as crucial spot up for grabs ahead of FA Cup tie

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has struggled with the left wingback role much like his predecessor Erik ten Hag last season.

Luke Shaw continues to be sidelined and given his poor injury record, the Portuguese would be wrong to put too much faith in him. After a difficult one-and-half years, Tyrell Malacia has left for PSV Eindhoven on loan.

The experiment with playing Diogo Dalot as a makeshift left wingback has failed miserably and Patrick Dorgu is expected to take over starting from Friday’s FA Cup tie against Leicester City.

But Amorim is also keeping his eyes peeled for talents coming up through the famed United academy system and on Wednesday, the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss called up Dante Plunkett to train with the first team.

                      17yo called up to training

He took to social media to confirm his participation in first team training for the first time. He uploaded a picture of his boots on his Instagram account, captioning the post, “first team” followed by a checkmark emoji.

The 17-year-old was signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024 after a successful trial period and he has all the attributes needed to become a top footballer.

The Englishman has been described as “lightning quick“, and a is a good reader of the game and as seen from his displays for the United U18s this season, he has a goal in him as well.

Plunkett has two goals and one assist in eight games this term but it is still not clear where is he in the pecking order given Harry Amass still remains at the club.

                      Debuts on the cards?

Lisandro Martinez’s injury could see Amorim shuffle his pack and Dorgu needs a backup as he is also only 20 and new to English football.

The head coach is clearly seeing which young talents can make the jump if required and it is good to see Plunkett being involved so early in his development.

Amorim could possibly hand a few debuts during the cup tie against the Foxes, especially if United can make the game safe early on.

But given the Red Devils’ home form this season, fans are not too confident heading into the game with Ruud van Nistelrooy eager to send a message to both Amorim and INEOS.
