Manchester United’s summer plans are centred around improving Michael Carrick’s midfield options, with INEOS keen to add at least two more players to the engine room at Old Trafford. A host of names have been linked with making the move, with Atalanta’s Ederson all but confirmed as the first new addition to Carrick’s squad. United CEO Omar Berrada recently confirmed that United will be looking for a mix of Premier League-proven stars as well as talent from further afield, meaning the next signing is likely to come from inside the division. Target ruled out Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has been touted as a possible target for the United hierarchy, but it seems they will have to look elsewhere, with Forest confident of keeping hold of one of their star men. As relayed by Give Me Sport, Forest expect Gibbs-White to stay at the City Ground after committing to a new contract when he looked destined to move last summer. With Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis “blocking” Gibbs-White once more, the 26-year-old might well be left thinking he is now tied to the club for life after the debacle with Tottenham Hotspur this time last year. Given Elliott Anderson is expected to leave Nottingham this summer, Marinakis clearly has no intention of letting both of his star players leave in the same window, and Gibbs-White will be the one staying put. United had both players on their wish list but appear to be behind Manchester City in the race to sign Anderson, and with the fresh developments on Gibbs-White, they look unlikely to be doing any business with the Europa League semi-finalists. Other targets gain more focus Gibbs-White is described as a “special” talent by his manager at the City Ground, Vitor Pereira, and would undoubtedly have added quality to Carrick’s ranks. However, he did feel like an unlikely signing, with United’s focus on other targets appearing to gather pace. Furthermore, the Englishman is more suited to the role Bruno Fernandes currently occupies at Old Trafford, and with the captain expected to stay, that is one area of the pitch United currently appear suitably stocked in. West Ham United’s Matheus Fernandes and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali look the hottest names on the shortlist right now, with INEOS keen to get their business done as early as possible. However, both clubs are holding on for huge fees for the respective players, and it might take some time to strike a deal that suits all parties. With the World Cup expected to hold up certain deals in the coming weeks, it might be a while before United can announce any shiny new signings, but no doubt the head figures will be working tirelessly behind the scenes to arm Carrick with the relevant tools as he heads into his first full season in charge. United line up surprise swoop for 27-yo Chelsea star, Blues ready to accept 43m offer – report
Manchester United have entered the picture amid uncertainty over Marc Cucurella’s future this summer. Cucurella, who joined Chelsea in 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth £63m, is widely expected to depart Stamford Bridge after publicly criticising the club’s apparent lack of ambition in their transfer strategy. United, meanwhile, are in the market for a new left-back following the departure of Tyrell Malacia. Manchester United interested in Marc Cucurella According to Monday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Manchester United and Manchester City have joined Barcelona in the race to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. It is claimed United have closely monitored the former Getafe man, who has already informed Chelsea of his desire to leave this summer. The parties understand that it is best to part ways and Chelsea need a convincing offer. The Catalan publication suggests the Blues would be willing to sell for €40-50m (£34.5-£43.2m). Cucurella is a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy and would like to return to his former club. However, Barcelona’s priority is reportedly strengthen other areas and they would only consider signing the 27-year-old him if Alejandro Balde were to move elsewhere. Manchester United linked with Alejandro Balde Interestingly, United have also shown interest in Balde, who is known for his explosive pace and dribbling ability. It has been previously reported that United have held talks to sign the Spain international, who fits the exact profile Jason Wilcox is seeking for Luke Shaw’s competition. However, Balde has struggled with injury issues over the past 24 months or so, and things might get worse in a more physical league. As such, United would be wise to make a move for Cucurella rather than helping Barca land the Premier League-proven Spaniard by taking Balde off their hands. Official: United PL title winner ruthlessly sacked as head coach in spite of second place finish in league

Manchester United have numerous former players in management at present. The most obvious example is the club’s current permanent manager, Michael Carrick. Although not a former player but an assistant manager, Kieran McKenna has also just led Ipswich Town back into the Premier League. Robin van Persie The Dutchman joined Manchester United in 2012 and scored 30 goals as the club retained the Premier League title from Manchester City. He would play for a further two seasons at United, before moving on to Fenerbahce and Feyenoord prior to retiring from professional football. Managerial career Van Persie managed Heerenveen in the 2024-2025 season before being appointed to the Feyenoord hotseat. He won the manager of the month award in August 2025 and was backed by pundit Ruud Gullit to get the Manchester United job one day. Sack Unfortunately for the former Manchester United striker, Feyenoord have not had the best of seasons, finishing second but a massive 19 points behind PSV Eindhoven. The side also exited the Europa League in the league phase and were disappointingly knocked out in the second round of the Dutch cup. Therefore, the club announced that “Feyenoord parts ways with Robin van Persie. Feyenoord will start the 2026-2027 season with a new head coach. The club would like to thank Robin van Persie for everything he gave during his time as head coach.” Feyenoord parts ways with Robin van Persie Feyenoord will start the 2026-2027 season with a new head coach. He deserves credit for guiding the team through a challenging season and ultimately securing second place. That ensured qualification for the UEFA Champions League, which is of great importance to the club.” Van Persie’s “tactical approach and man-management skills have been questioned throughout his brief stint” as Feyenoord boss in spite of their second-place finish. Advantage United as attacking target has chosen between PL and Spain in “absolute dream move” – Fabrizio Romano

Despite finishing third in the Premier League this season, Manchester United have earmarked this summer as a time to strengthen the squad. Summer targets The club are predominantly working on midfield targets at the moment, with Ederson already all but wrapped up. United are also in talks over several midfielders, such as Mateus Fernandes at West Ham United, and have a long-standing interest in players like AFC Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. The Red Devils are thinking beyond the midfield, though, and have an interest in players at winger and full-back positions. Lewis Hall is reportedly someone whom they would love to make a move for if a deal opportunity materialises. Rafael Leao Michael Carrick’s side have also been linked to wingers and were interested in Antoine Semenyo in January before he decided to move to Manchester City. United have been linked to AC Milan winger Rafael Leao after he announced that he would be leaving his current side after his duties with Portugal at the World Cup. The Portuguese winger has already stated that he sees himself playing in the Premier League or La Liga next season, after spending his career in Portugal, France, and Italy since 2019. Further preference Journalist Fabrizio Romano has highlighted in his YouTube update that Leao also has a preference for the Premier League, which would certainly aid United’s drive to sign the 26-year-old. Romano explained, “the feeling around Rafael, and from those close to him, is that the Premier League would be the absolute dream move and the ideal destination. He has had some calls from Turkish clubs over the recent weeks, but Rafael wants to wait. He believes that the World Cup can open new doors for him.” The Italian journalist continued to explain, “he feels his chapter at Milan is closed. His dream is the Premier League, even before La Liga. In a recent interview, Rafael mentioned Manchester United. A few years ago, he was mentioning Arsenal. We will see what’s going to happen in terms of the ideal club and ideal opportunities for Leão.” Romano did suggest that no deal is advanced with any Premier League team yet and that certain difficulties will have to be overcome, such as his injury-hit season at Milan. Nonetheless, after the World Cup, this is certainly a transfer that will gain traction. Phil Jones: Ex-Man United defender line for switch to Sheffield United
Former Manchester United star Phil Jones could reportedly be on the move, with Sheffield United eager to add him to their backroom staff. Move on the cards Jones, who is currently a coach at Blackburn Rovers is facing an uncertain future at the club due to the return of Tony Mowbray. Mowbray will be given the chance to form his own coaching set-up, which leaves Jones in a precarious position. However, according to Alan Nixon on his Patreon, Sheffield United, who are undergoing internal changes of their own, are keen on offering him a way out. Coming off a disappointing 2025/26 season in which they finished in 13th place in the Championship table, the Blades are looking to bolster their ranks to ensure there is no repeat of the same. Chris Wilder’s backroom staff is heading for a shake-up. Long-time assistant Alan Knill looks set to leave Bramall Lane and there’s also uncertainty around Guilherme Ramos. Jones has been suggested as someone who could arrive and join Wilder in the dugout. United spell Jones spent 12 years at United, having arrived at the club in 2011 from Rovers for around £16.5m. At the time, he was regarded as one of the best defensive prospects in the country. However, competition for places and severe injury problems kept Jones from ever nailing down a consistent run of performances and results. The Englishman made his United debut in the Community Shield victory over Manchester United under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. He went on to make 229 first-team appearances for the Red Devils. Jones helped United win their last Premier League title in 2012/13. He also won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Europa League and three Community Shields. After his retirement in 2024, Jones transitioned into coaching. He worked with United’s academy for some time before returning to Rovers as a first-team coach. It looks like he is set to continue his coaching career at Sheffield United. The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade.
