United open club-to-club talks to sign 80m midfield magician, Old Trafford is his dream move – report

Manchester United have opened club-to-club talks with West Ham United to strike a deal for Mateus Fernandes, according to an inside source. Theatre of Dreams The Red Devils are focusing on an overhaul of Michael Carrick’s midfield unit this summer, with Casemiro’s departure confirmed and Manuel Ugarte available for sale. A £39 million deal has already been struck for Ederson, Atalanta’s 26-year-old box-to-box warrior. However, the Brazilian received a late call-up by Carlo Ancelotti for the Seleção yesterday, which could potentially delay official completion of the move. Should Ugarte depart, United are intent on adding two more midfielders to their ranks, with Elliot Anderson and Aurelien Tchouameni the leading targets, while Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Carlos Baleba are other names on the list. However, Fernandes – West Ham’s 21-year-old starlet – has rapidly emerged as a priority for the Red Devils after a superb season at the London Stadium, with the Hammers’ relegation opening the door to an exit. He has communicated a strong desire to join United, considering Old Trafford a ‘dream move’. Now, according to a well-placed source, INEOS have formally “begun talks” with West Ham to try and agree a deal, despite an exorbitant £80m valuation. United move first There has been considerable interest from across Europe in Fernandes, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all expressing interest in the youngster. But it is United who have struck first, with Sully – an excellent source of news in M16 – revealing that formal negotiations have opened as INEOS are keen to avoid a “long saga.” #MUFC have begun talks with #WHU for Mateus Fernandes. United are said to have “no desire to pay” West Ham United’s valuation of £80m, though well-placed figures have suggested the expected price will be closer to £60m – a much more reasonable price for a young midfielder with only two years of Premier League experience. West Ham United are in desperate need of income to prepare for their descent into the Championship, with the east London club believed to be looking to raise as much as £150 million in sales. Fernandes is their most profitable asset by far, which explains their desire to drive a hard bargain. If any of his other suitors formalise their interest, a bidding war could erupt – which would be music to the Hammers’ ears. However, a report relayed by The Peoples Person indicates Fernandes’ agent, Jorge Mendes, is drumming up noise around his client in order to extract as much value as possible. There is understood to be confidence from those close to the deal that the red half of Manchester remains the Olhão native’s preferred, and most likely, destination this summer. United warrior is a dedicated soldier on the warpath to make history at the World Cup – report

The 2026 World Cup is set to kick off this week, with the biggest ever edition of football’s showpiece occasion ready to capture the attention of the globe over the next two months. Manchester United will be represented heavily across the tournament, with a host of players from Old Trafford chasing glory for their respective nations. However, only one United star at this year’s competition knows what it’s like to win the famous trophy, having been part of the Argentina squad who secured their place in the history books in Qatar four years ago. Lisandro Martinez has been picked once again by Lionel Scaloni as the Argentines go after back-to-back wins, which would cement them as one of the greatest national sides of all time. Warm-up’s going well As with every nation, warm-up games have been taking place in relevant venues, with coaches fine-tuning their tactics and getting their players acclimatised to the conditions they will face in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Argentina played Central American rivals Honduras in a friendly fixture in the early hours of Sunday morning BST, which Martinez started and completed with an impressive 60-minute showing before being replaced by Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero. Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Giuliano Simeone gave Scaloni’s men a 2-0 win at Kyle Park, with Argentine media responding well to the performance of the team and the United defender in particular. As reported by The Mirror, local outlet Clarin rated Martinez a strong six out of ten, describing him as “solid defensively” if not overly troubled by the Honduras attack throughout his hour on the field. As well as being his usual tenacious self in defending, Martinez also nearly scored the goal of his life through an outrageous bicycle kick attempt from the edge of the box that “surprised everyone” according to Clarin. Another respected Argentine outlet, La Nacion, also praised the 28-year-old, agreeing with Clarin on the six out of ten match rating and branding him a “dedicated soldier” before citing his “great intensity and desire for never letting up”. Fitness concerns behind him? Despite another injury-ravaged campaign at Old Trafford, Martinez did end the season available to Michael Carrick, and La Nacion noted the centre-back as looking “fit and ready whenever needed”, which will be music to Scaloni’s ears as he prepares the defence of the trophy. Carrick will also be hoping Martinez enjoys a strong tournament and returns to Manchester fit and well to fight for his place in a United squad that will need all hands on deck next season. United secured an impressive third-place finish in the Premier League last term but will be well aware of the challenges that face them in the new campaign, given the extra demands that come with playing in the Champions League. Having Martinez fit for the new season will be crucial to United, who undoubtedly look a better side with the Argentine at the heart of the back four. His ability on the ball, coupled with his desire to defend his goal, has made him a cult hero at Old Trafford, and Carrick would love to oversee an injury-free campaign upon his return that could see him bringing back a historic second World Cup winner’s medal. “He’s so good at…”: England teammate lifts lid on what Kobbie Mainno did in training that left him stunned

Newcastle defender Tino Livramento has admitted being stunned by something he has seen Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo do in England training. History beckons Mainoo and his England teammates will be looking to make history this summer when they participate in the World Cup in North America. The youngster and Marcus Rashford, who spent the 2025/26 season out on loan at Barcelona, are the only United representatives in the squad. This follows the shock exclusions of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw. Though this is Mainoo’s first World Cup, it’s far from his first major tournament for the Three Lions. He was a key figure for Gareth Southgate at Euro 2020, playing in the final loss to Spain. At one point, Mainoo seemed at real risk of missing out on the England squad as he struggled for playing time under then-manager Ruben Amorim. For reasons best known to himself, Amorim regularly overlooked Mainoo, even favouring the uninspiring Manuel Ugarte over him. The Carrington academy graduate looked destined to leave in January but Michael Carrick’s arrival as the replacement for Amorim breathed new life into his fortunes. Mainoo started all but one of the 17 Premier League games that Carrick took charge of. Mainoo recently thanked Carrick directly for helping him nail down a spot in the national team. And it looks like the 21-year-old is making waves in the camp, if Livramento’s remarks are anything to go by. Livramento raves about Mainoo Appearing on the latest episode of Lions’ Den connected by EE, Livramento was asked about a moment that made him stop and take notice. The Newcastle man answered, “One thing that’s like, seeing Kobbie play two-touch.” “He’s so good at two-touch. He’d be passing it or flicking it with his ankle and that.” England are next in action on Wednesday when they face Costa Rica in a friendly, before they turn their attention towards their opening game of the World Cup against Croatia a week later. Mourinho returns to haunt United with plans to completely derail INEOS’ midfield rebuild – report

Transfer windows typically rely on the outcome of a raft of continuously moving parts, many of which are outside the control of clubs wishing to sign players. This is set to be the case once again this summer, with one of the biggest clubs of them all making huge decisions that could impact the rest of Europe due to their influence in the market. Real Madrid have released the results of their latest presidential election, with legendary head figure Florentino Perez winning the race to continue to hold governance at the Bernabeu until the year 2030. Perez won the poll with 21,741 ballots, resulting in a 65% landslide victory over Enrique Riquelme in what was the first contested vote in 20 years. It now remains to be seen what impact the result will have on the football world, and Manchester United in particular, with Perez desperate to make a major splash over the next four years to wrestle back the power that has been taken from them by Barcelona domestically and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. United wary of Perez promise First on the list for Perez is to re-appoint former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to the Madrid dugout in a move that has already split supporters in the Spanish capital. As reported by The Mirror, should he be reinstated, Mourinho has his sights set on one of United’s primary midfield targets, which will certainly cause INEOS a headache given the pull of Los Blancos. West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes has emerged as one of the brightest talents in Europe despite being relegated with the Hammers last season and is widely expected to leave the London Stadium in the coming months. United hold a keen interest in the 21-year-old, but with Madrid now expected to circle with genuine intent, it is difficult to see the Portuguese preferring a move to Manchester over Madrid. However, West Ham have reportedly slapped an £80 million price tag on the head of their star man, which could scare off the Spaniards and put the ball back in United’s court. With that being said, if it is £80 million or not at all, United may themselves be better served looking for alternatives in the market that would represent more of a guarantee than Fernandes, who has been relegated in the past two seasons with Southampton and West Ham respectively. Despite the obvious talent, moving to United or Madrid at his tender age is also a huge step up, and parting with that sum of money does represent a major risk for either club. Further sub-plots to Perez and United Outside of the race for Fernandes, Mourinho’s re-introduction at the Bernabeu could have an impact on a couple of other players who have links and ties to United. Aurélien Tchouaméni has been hotly linked with leaving the Spanish capital this summer, with United earmarking the Frenchman as a marquee signing—a move that might have become more likely if Fernandes moves to Madrid. Should Mourinho get his man in Fernandes, it could open the door further for United’s interest in Tchouaméni and lead to an ironic twist in the market. However, early reports claim that Mourinho wants to keep the 26-year-old at the club, given his profile aligns with someone the Portuguese coach has enjoyed working with down the years. The Sun claims Mourinho has no desire to move Tchouaméni on and sees him as a central figure in the set up at the club, throwing another spanner into the works for United who would have certainly ramped up their interest if Jose had taken a different stance on the player. With regards to Fernandes, it feels like INEOS are better served making their mind up on the playmaker as quickly as possible and getting an official bid in early to avoid the circus that will inevitably come with Madrid and Mourinho should they get involved. Another player who could be affected by the news is United full-back Diogo Dalot. Mourinho brought his fellow countryman to Old Trafford during his time in charge in 2018 and remains a fan of the defender. Despite having no current designs to sell Dalot, it would surely be negligent to ignore interest that could lead to an offer too good to refuse for a player that, despite enjoying a strong end to the season, has endured ups and downs during his career in Manchester. It is also no secret that INEOS are looking to raise funds to reinvest into the playing squad and Dalot does represent someone who holds a decent market value. However the next steps play out in the Spanish capital, the football world will almost certainly feel the effects given the power of Madrid and the personalities involved, and no doubt INEOS will be casting a keen eye on any developments in the coming days. Spurs open talks over stunning hijack for midfield maestro despite Carrick urging Wilcox to strike first – report

Tottenham Hotspur have stormed into the race for Hayden Hackney as Michael Carrick urges INEOS to target the Middlesbrough maestro, according to a new report. Midfield Rebuild The Red Devils are prioritising a major revamp in midfield this summer, with up to £150 million set to be directed towards fixing the stalling engine room. Despite a resurgent campaign, Casemiro will bring an end to his four years in Manchester this month after it was mutually decided with the club not to extend his contract. A free transfer to Inter Miami is close to being agreed. Manuel Ugarte looks set to join the 34-year-old Brazilian through the exit door, with United actively welcoming offers for the Uruguay international, who has failed to adapt to the Premier League since his £42.7 million move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. United’s primary targets are Elliot Anderson and Aurélien Tchouaméni, though deals for either player appear increasingly remote. Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Mateus Fernandes, and Alex Scott are other names under consideration. But Hackney – Middlesbrough’s 23-year-old playmaker, who first burst onto the scene under Carrick at the Riverside Stadium – is another option with many admirers at Old Trafford. However, despite his former manager championing his name, United’s hierarchy, headed by sporting director Jason Wilcox, appear to be focusing elsewhere. Spurs launch a hijack Everton are leading the race for Hackney, whose contract on Teesside expires next year, forcing Boro to reluctantly consider a sale of their talisman. Kim Hellberg’s side faced heartbreak in the final of the Championship play-offs, losing 1-0 in the last minute to Hull City at Wembley. Had they been promoted, their ability to ward off interest in Hackney would have been significantly stronger. However, the Redcar native is too talented not to be plying his trade in the Premier League, having been crowned the Championship’s Player of the Season after a stellar campaign, though Boro will not let him go cheap. The North East side rejected Everton’s opening offer, despite Hackney signalling a switch to Merseyside is his preference. But Spurs, ready to splash the cash after almost dropping into the Championship themselves, have launched a hijack of the Toffees’ move. Sports Boom have “ramped up their interest” by directly approaching Middlesbrough to strike a deal. “Tottenham see Hackney as a player capable of becoming one of the new faces of their rebuild following a desperately disappointing campaign. Spurs are eager to inject youth, energy and quality into their midfield and believe the England Under-21 international fits the bill perfectly.” The report states United are “keeping a close eye on developments”, suggesting Carrick may still get his wish should INEOS decide to launch their own last-minute hijack if the leading targets elsewhere prove unobtainable. Fresh timeline emerges for Ederson to officially complete United move after stunning Brazil call-up – report

A fresh timeline has emerged for Atalanta midfielder Ederson to officially complete his move to Manchester United after he received a shock late call-up to the Brazil national team. World Cup boost On Sunday, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced that Ederson has been called up to Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad after Flamengo’s Wesley sustained an injury. After weeks of negotiations, United and Atalanta finally struck a deal for Ederson. Everything is in place for him to seal a switch to Old Trafford in a deal worth an initial fee of £34m (€40.5m) plus £3.8m (€4.5m) in potential add-ons. He will put pen to paper on a four-year contract running until 2030. Heading into the summer window, bolstering the midfield is believed to be the priority for United and they have made a real statement of intent by snapping up Ederson early. However, his newfound role with the Seleção has pushed United to change the schedule for his transfer. Timeline adjustment According to Tyrone Marshall of the Manchester Evening News, United are now working with a new timetable to officially get Ederson’s transfer over the line. Marshall explains, “Ederson is yet to undergo a medical and sign the paperwork to complete his transfer to Old Trafford, and that was due to be completed in early July.” “It’s not impossible that Ederson completes his transfer to United during the World Cup, though it would require the player and the Brazilian football federation (CBF) to be on board.” “The more likely timeframe now is that Ederson will undergo a medical and complete the paperwork for his Old Trafford switch once Brazil’s World Cup is over, before the midfielder is granted a summer break.” It’s understood that Ederson was due to spend all summer with the Red Devils and be available for the side’s pre-season fixture schedule against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, which comes a day before the World Cup final. But like with all the United players who will participate in the tournament, the 26-year-old will be given some time off between the end of the competition and the time they report back for pre-season training. Gary Neville claims Cole Palmer would be “gold” for Manchester United were the Chelsea wizard to arrive at Old Trafford this summer. “That could be gold…” Palmer has emerged as one of the best attackers in the Premier League since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2023. Signed from Manchester City for £40 million, the 24-year-old is the centrepiece of the Blues’ side, who have just come under the watch of Spanish tactician Xabi Alonso after finishing 10th under both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. Chelsea are understood to consider Palmer “untouchable”, with confidence he is happy in west London, despite a difficult campaign marred by injury. A contract with seven years remaining strengthens this stance. Cole Palmer Stats: 2025/26 Season CompetitionAppearancesGoalsAssistsYellow CardsRed CardsMinutes Played Premier League261015-1,965′ UEFA Champions League412–277′ FA Cup3–1-171′ EFL Cup1—-30′ Total341136-2,443′ However, there continue to be rumblings the Wythenshawe native is secretly open to a return to Manchester, though only to the red half of the city. United are understood to be admirers of the England international, but the presence of talismanic captain Bruno Fernandes and last summer’s £71m signing, Bryan Mbeumo, means Michael Carrick has two big-name players in his best positions. Still, Neville is convinced Palmer would be a success at the Theatre of Dreams, because he is Premier League proven – the same attribute INEOS targeted Mbeumo for – and capable of being the main man at a top club. “I do like the signings of [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo last summer because they’ve had that grounding in the Premier League. They weren’t “gold” but there was a removal of risk because they’d played in the Premier League and they were stepping up a level and they were young and hungry,” the 51-year-old tells Rio Ferdinand. “‘Those type of signings are good. There’s talk of Cole Palmer and that looks like a signing that could be gold for Manchester United if he came to Old Trafford.” But Neville does not consider it a likely prospect: “I don’t think it would happen though, I think Chelsea will hang onto him. But there’s very few signings like that available, it’s only every few years that these type of players become available.” Buying Local The United legend is adamant targeting Palmer would be right in line with Sir Alex Ferguson’s approach of hoovering up the best talent in the Premier League, however. Neville offers the example of Harry Kane and Declan Rice, England’s captain and vice-captain for this summer’s World Cup and two of the best players in Europe, as signings Ferguson would have refused to let land anywhere other than M16 – as he did with Ferdinand himself. “I think Harry Kane would have been that for United, that would have been gold. You [Ferdinand] joining from Leeds, Wazza [Rooney] joining from Everton, Roy Keane from Nottingham Forest – those are all gold. “Declan Rice was the same before he joined Arsenal. They’re absolute guarantees, they’re certainties and in the end they will look cheap. If Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of Man United he would never have allowed Harry Kane to be anywhere else, he would have made sure he came to Old Trafford. Declan Rice would have been the same. Sir Alex would have been all over those two.” Final Thoughts With INEOS’s focus revolving around a major revamp in midfield this summer, a blockbuster raid for Palmer does not appear high on the agenda. But a new left-winger and a No.9 are both being targeted to bolster the frontline, suggesting an elite attacker is never a target which can be ruled out, particularly as Mbeumo has shown the ability to play on the opposite flank and through the middle before. If Palmer, a boyhood United fan, were to swap west London for a return to the north west, it would send shockwaves across England, and make a certain Scotsman nod his head with approval. From securing a move to Manchester United to earning a late berth in Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, Edersons has gone through an eventful week in his career. The combative midfielder’s performances with Atalanta have already convinced the Old Trafford hierarchy. Although the move is not official yet, a recent report relayed by The Peoples Person suggests that all the paperwork is in place ahead of Ederson’s highly anticipated £39 million move to the Theatre of Dreams. The Red Devils are putting succession plans in place for Casemiro, whose contract expires at the end of this month. The veteran midfielder was outstanding last season, and played a key role in United’s third-place finish in the Premier League. However, he is set to leave as a free agent for a fresh adventure, forcing the English giants to turn to the market for midfield reinforcements. Ederson, who registered three goals and two assists in 41 games in all competitions last season for Atalanta, has been identified as an option for the job. A late World Cup call-up for incoming United man Despite his impressive performances for the Serie A club last season, Ederson initially missed out on a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the player had a huge slice of luck that has now ensured his participation in this summer’s blockbuster event. Roma midfielder Wesley, who was part of Brazil’s final 26-man squad, suffered a muscle injury in the left thigh’s adductor muscle. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has since announced that the player has been ruled out of the upcoming tournament and named Ederson as his replacement. It was also announced that the outgoing Atalanta man would join up with the national squad on Monday, 8 June. The circumstances surrounding Ederson learning the blockbuster news while on holiday have now come to light. Chaos amid family celebrations According to ESPN Brazil, Ederson was in his hometown, Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, to attend a friend’s wedding when he heard the good news. The report states: “Éderson was in town to attend the wedding of Rômulo, a midfielder who played alongside him at Cruzeiro and later had spells at Juventude, Athletic and Internacional.” “The party took place on Saturday (6), whilst the national team were beating Egypt in Cleveland. The news of his call-up came on Sunday morning. Éderson was woken by a barrage of calls from the CBF staff, telling him he had been selected by Ancelotti and needed to catch a flight to the United States as soon as possible.
