United Women star leaves competition in her dust with jaw-dropping statistics

Manchester United Women have had numerous top performers so far this season after a wonderful start to the campaign.

Three victories and a draw see the side fighting at the top of the table and they have already secured their passage to the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce on fire

The American keeper was tasked with filling the rather large gloves of Mary Earps last season but passed with flying colours.

She was nominated for PFA Womens’ Players’ Player of the Year and was also voted in the WSL Team of the Season.

The American was rewarded with a new contract at the back end of last season.

She was also handed her first appearances for the United States national team as a reward for her fine efforts between the posts.

Picked up where she left off

Tullis-Joyce has picked up where she left off last season with a string of stunning performances this season.

The American has kept six clean sheets in eight domestic and European matches this season and doesn’t seem in the mood to slow down.

The club’s official website reports that, “nobody has kept as many clean sheets in the top division since 21 September 2024, when Phallon made her WSL bow.”

In the 26 matches she has played in the league, there have been an amazing 16 clean sheets. “Only Manchester City (twice), Arsenal and Liverpool have scored past Phallon more than once in a game during that spell.”

In addition, “Phallon has saved 80% of the on-target shots she’s faced in the WSL, again placing her clear of Hampton (79%) and Arsenal’s Daphne van Domselaar, who has a 75% save percentage and 11 clean sheets in this time frame.”

Her boss Marc Skinner has clearly been impressed and after her incredible acrobatic stop versus Arsenal recently he stated, “I’ve said it many times, we have the best goalkeeper.” The statistics certainly back up his assertions.

Tullis-Joyce will certainly need to be at her best this Friday evening when the champions Chelsea arrive to the Progress With Unity Stadium.

“Working on some things”: National team boss pinpoints what United starlet must do to win back place in team

Manchester United starlet Chido Obi has not had the season he had perhaps dreamed of over the summer.

Meteoric rise last season

The young Danish striker left Arsenal’s academy in the summer of 2024 and joined United.

He took to the club like a duck to water, scoring numerous goals in the youth team and playing a vital role in United’s run to the Youth Cup semi-final.

Obi also made his first team debut in February and regularly outplayed last season’s first choice striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The 17-year-old made eight first team appearances last year including 90 minutes against Brentford in May.

Lack of opportunities this season

He also scored two goals in United’s post-season friendly match versus Hong Kong but hardly got a look in during the summer tour of The United States of America.

He has not been in the first team squad this season and has had to be content playing youth football. The forward has scored three goals in six Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy matches.

National team omission

Denmark U21 manager Lars Knudsen has responded by not including the exciting starlet in the latest squad for October matches.

Speaking to Danish paper Tipsbladet he claimed, “Chido is at United right now and working on some things purely sportingly that he needs to put into his game. He sometimes starts in the under-21 team. We have a close dialogue both with Chido and with the club about where he is in terms of development.”

The coach also stressed that they have been observing his progress closely and will continue to do so.

Pressed on what Obi needs to improve he explained, “among other things, he needs to participate a little more in some team-related things. He is a good goalscorer, but he could also score many specific types of goals.”

Knudsen stressed that the forward “clearly has some top skills” and “exciting potential” but he must continue to work hard if he is to become the finished article.

“Normal for us to carry him”: Mbeumo rallies around United’s under-fire star

Manchester United’s new signing Bryan Mbeumo has opened up on his captain Bruno Fernandes.

Summer arrival

After complex negotiations with Brentford, Mbeumo finally arrived in July to Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international opened his goalscoring account in the League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

He then added his second goal versus Burnley but failed to find the back of the net in September.

The attacker has been one of United’s better players this season however, causing numerous problems against most defences and was one of the stronger performers versus Manchester City and Chelsea.

Comments on Bruno Fernandes

Mbeumo’s teammate, Bruno Fernandes, has certainly had a mixed season to date to say the least.

Many pundits have criticised Ruben Amorim’s decision to persist with playing the attacking midfielder so deep in the midfield, with many feeling it nullifies his best qualities.

He has scored two goals this season, including a last minute winner versus Burnley.

Nonetheless, he has also missed two crucial penalties in away matches versus Fulham and Brentford.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mbeumo has argued that United’s players must not always rely on Fernandes but also support him in difficult times.

He claimed, “it’s important to support him because this is what he’s doing every time.
“I think it’s normal for us to carry him as well sometimes because he gives us a lot, and it’s good for him to have us as well.”

United have certainly asked a lot of Fernandes over his five years at the club as he has arguably been the club’s only consistent performer during that time.

Supporters of the side will hope that the Portugal star will soon return to the form of the player that has captured their imagination so many times in recent years.

Fed up with Amorim, Mainoo has chosen his next club and United fans will be distraught – report

Saturday’s defeat to Brentford means Manchester United have now won only twice in six Premier League games this season, their worst start in 33 years.

His flawed system and refusal to adapt have irked many, while his reluctance to turn to youth to solve the team’s current problems has been baffling, to say the least.

Despite mistakes in almost all games, Altay Bayindir continues to start in goal, while new signing Senne Lammens keeps watching from the sidelines.

Leny Yoro also seems to have lost his place in the starting lineup, while the biggest surprise is the fact that Kobbie Mainoo is yet to start a league game this campaign.

Kobbie Mainoo struggles under Amorim

The Carrington graduate is having to compete with Bruno Fernandes for a place in the starting lineup, despite the obvious frailties in the defensive midfield position.

Casemiro cannot handle the intensity of games while Manuel Ugarte continues to struggle. The Englishman has excelled for both the Red Devils and England in that position, but Amorim just does not seem to rate him.

The Englishman got so frustrated that he pushed for a summer loan exit, but INEOS turned it down, asking the midfielder to work even harder to impress the head coach.

If things don’t improve, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to try to leave again in the winter, in a bid to keep his World Cup dreams alive.

As per The Daily Mail, the 20-year-old’s preference would be to move abroad, with Napoli his preferred option, given the success his former teammate Scott McTominay has enjoyed since his move there last year.

There is also interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and it would be a huge disaster to lose him.

“It seems no United player would benefit more from a change of manager than Kobbie Mainoo.

Next club already picked?

The England midfielder’s United career has stalled under Amorim, causing Mainoo to request a loan move before the transfer deadline at the start of this month. The 20-year-old didn’t get his way and has been limited to three substitute appearances since.

“If Amorim keeps his job until January, it would be surprising if Mainoo didn’t make another attempt to leave his boyhood club. If so, keep an eye on Napoli and the two Madrid clubs.

“Confidential understands Napoli would have been Mainoo’s first choice if United had given him the green light to go. The Italian club wanted to sign him, and he was keen to link up with former United team-mates Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund – as well as Manchester City favourite Kevin De Bruyne – in Naples.

“But there will be interest from a number of other top European clubs. Given more time to plan a move, don’t rule out Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid being among them.”

United fans will be distraught to see another academy youngster leave, and taste success elsewhere. Hopefully, Amorim and INEOS can finally see the light and trust Kobbie Mainoo more in the games to come.

World Cup winner is the perfect Amorim replacement at United, he will mark the start of a new era under INEOS – opinion

More than a decade after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United’s search for his successor is yet to bear fruit. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Erik ten Hag have all failed to take the club back to their glory days.

Ruben Amorim was selected for the job last November, but ten months later, he has yet to get going.

The Red Devils have endured a difficult time under the Portuguese so far. They finished 15th in the league last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite significant investment in the squad over the summer, results have failed to improve. United are 14th in the Premier League table after six games, and have scored just seven goals in the league so far.

Amorim feeling the heat at Old Trafford

United started the season on the front foot, impressing against Arsenal on opening day despite losing 0-1. Since then, it has been a topsy-turvy ride, with fans’ emotions oscillating between agony and ecstasy.

When the defeat against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup appeared to shatter dreams, the hard-fought win over Burnley gave hope. A 0-3 loss to Manchester City toppled the sandcastles, yet it appeared that United had risen like a phoenix after the 2-1 win against Chelsea.

However, last weekend’s 1-3 defeat to Brentford, who had just one win this season before that game, appears to be the final straw to break fans’ resolve. Amorim had divided opinion among supporters and critics for a while, and that loss only strengthened the voice of his doubters.

The Portuguese’s situation at Old Trafford, at the moment, remains fragile.

The contenders

Recent reports have suggested that United have already shortlisted multiple candidates for the hot seat at Old Trafford. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who has transformed the Eagles’ fortunes since taking charge at Selhurst Park, is among the names linked with the job.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has also been mentioned as an option, while Gareth Southgate is reportedly on INEOS’ radar as well.

It is now believed that former Barcelona manager Xavi is keen to take charge of the Red Devils. The Spaniard is not associated with any managerial position at the moment and is reportedly ready to join the club immediately.

And he could be the right man for the job.

Big club experience

Xavi enjoyed an impressive run with Barcelona during his two-and-a-half-season stay at Camp Nou. The Spaniard won the La Liga title and the Supercopa de Espana before he was abruptly removed from the position in May 2024.

Xavi finished his tenure with the Catalans with a 62.68% win ratio, registering 89 wins and 29 defeats from 142 games in all competitions.

The Spaniard is well aware of the rigours of managing a top club in Europe, which puts him ahead of the competition in the race for the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Unlike Amorim, Xavi has overseen Barcelona’s run in the Champions League and knows all about fan expectations. United are fast becoming a pressure cooker for players and managers alike, but the Spaniard has the experience to deal with expectations at the Theatre of Dreams.

An emphasis on possession

Amorim wants his team to play high-action attacking football, with emphasis on possession and structured buildup. Xavi, meanwhile, also prefers possession-based football, and his team have previously excelled in controlling the tempo of games.

The Spaniard’s arrival, as such, wouldn’t require a massive shift in tactics, as was the case when Amorim joined the Red Devils. Instead, the focus would be on improving the team’s gameplay in possession, which has been the club’s bane for ages.

Under Amorim, United have struggled to control games and have relied mostly on transitional play. This has hurt the team against opposition that deploys low blocks.

Xavi’s setup, meanwhile, would emphasise possession and ball retention. His philosophy is based on dictating the tempo of the game, which could be a refreshing departure from United’s current state.

A shift in formation

One of Amorim’s biggest issues is his 3-4-3 system, with the team still struggling to cope with the demands of the formation. Xavi, meanwhile, uses the 4-3-3 system that the United squad is arguably better suited for.

The Red Devils have played in that formation under Solskjaer as well as Ten Hag, and have traditionally deployed a back-four.

Xavi, however, is tactically flexible and has previously altered his approach to suit the opposition, something Amorim has been reluctant to do so far.

Meanwhile, Xavi’s arrival could solve one of United’s biggest paradoxes – the midfield. Amorim’s two-man midfield has been torn apart at times by the opposition, and supporters are crying out for a switch to a midfield three.

Xavi, meanwhile, deploys a three-man midfield, and a trio of Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Casemiro could instantly control the middle of the park. It would bring balance to the team, combining defensive solidity with attacking flair, while reducing the dependence on the full-backs.

Replace Casemiro with Carlos Baleba in the winter, or next summer, and you potentially have one of the best midfields in the league.

Focus on Youth

United have a history of promoting youth. At Old Trafford, if you are good enough, you are old enough, which is why Amorim’s treatment of Mainoo this season has baffled fans and critics.

The Englishman has been competing with Bruno Fernandes for a place in the starting XI this season, and has yet to start a game in the league. Leny Yoro, meanwhile, has also lost his place to Harry Maguire in recent games.

At Barcelona, the likes of Gavi and Pedri flourished under Xavi, who also gave debuts to 15 players from La Masia during his short reign! Among them are Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Fermin Lopez, and Marc Casado, who are now a key part of Hansi Flick’s set-up at Camp Nou.

United also have a string of budding talents ready to break into the senior side, so Xavi’s experience while dealing with young players will be a bonus.

A new identity

What United need right now is more than just a new manager. The team needs an identity, something that has disappeared in recent seasons.

Xavi’s arrival could give the Premier League giants a new direction. It would signal INEOS’ commitment towards youth and ideals, alongside football.

And just like he beat Real Madrid to the La Liga title, perhaps Xavi could end his former manager Pep Guardiola’s dominance in England and mark the start of a new era at the Theatre of Dreams.

Deepungsu has been a Manchester United fan since 2000. In his playing days, he was an attacking midfielder with a proclivity for the back heel. Right now, however, he prefers to operate as a regista. “What’s going on inside”: United summer signing opens up on negativity surrounding the club following poor start

Manchester United have started the new season like they ended the last, with fans calling for INEOS to take action.

Following the defeat to Brentford, the Red Devils have now won a meagre nine Premier League games out of 33 under Ruben Amorim, and only twice in six games this campaign.

The head coach’s flawed system and refusal to adapt have been criticised by one and all, but for now, his players seem to be backing him to turn the tide around.

In fact, summer signing Bryan Mbeumo told Sky Sports that the players have to take more responsibility to avoid such poor results moving forward.

Players need to take more responsibility

“Obviously disappointed with the result, I had a warm welcome back from the fans and I will never forget that.

“I think everyone in the team needs to take responsibility. When you play in a club this big, everyone needs to know what to do – as a team, we need to do better.”

Toxicity and United go hand-in-hand, especially when results do not go their way. And the Cameroonian will be new to these things since he moved from the Bees to the Red Devils in the summer.

Pundits, ex-players, the media love it when the 20-time English league champions struggle and often times, the social media storm can prove to be a distraction.

On outside noise

Not for Bryan Mbeumo though, who says he is only focussed on improving and he tries to avoid social media. Something young stars can learn from.

“Obviously it’s different, it’s not the same, but the only thing we want to be focused on is ourselves, we just try to listen to what’s going on inside.

“It’s not that hard [to block the noise out], obviously, the main thing we see is on social media, so it’s just not going on there much, and you just have to stay focused on your own things.”

While Saturday was yet another match to forget for United fans, there was one tiny silver lining with the team lining up with their strongest attack for the first time this season.

On new-look attack

Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko all started, with the Slovenian finally getting on the scoresheet. And the Cameroon international is excited to play and improve with his attacking partners as the season progresses.

“It’s exciting, because we get to learn to play with new players and it’s always challenging, but that’s what we like as footballers.

“Of course it will improve, we haven’t played a lot together, so there are certain things that we’re going to improve, and there are different types of players, but it’s good to be with them.”

Hopefully, the 26-year-old can inspire the 20-time English league champions to victory on Saturday, when they take on high-flying Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Son of United legend shows qualities in midfield for U21s that the first team is crying out for

Manchester United U21s opened their EFL Trophy campaign with a heavy defeat away to Lincoln City, but the scoreline didn’t do them justice.

Here are our player ratings for the match. Read the detailed match report of all the action here.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Ratings

Will Murdock – 6 – A match of highs and lows where he was ultimately let down by his height. He did well early on, coming off his line when he needed to and made two very good saves during the match. But the first two goals he conceded went over his head and could have potentially been saved by a bigger keeper.

Jacob Devaney – 6.5 – Tried out in nearly every position this season, he started at right-back before ending up at left centre-back and he performance decently in both positions. An all-action performance, he put himself about, getting involved in the most duels while attempting five tackles. Using his natural ability, he also did well stepping out from the back to help control possession.

Reece Munro – 5 – A bit of a shaky display at times, he struggled with tracking runners and wasn’t alive to the movement off the ball. Often times he was able to get away with it due to his own speed and physicality, but he was particularly exposed by Reeco Hackett, who matched him for pace and was able to slip off his shoulder.

Rhys Bennett – 6 – The more composed of the central pairing, he was comfortable on the ball and defended the ground well but could have used his senior experience more to marshal the aerial battles that United struggled in.

Bendito Mantato – 5 – Showed bits of his quality, most notably with a nice charging run infield late on but was too timid for most of the match. Given his attacking instincts, he played within himself and didn’t look to get too far forward, often opting for the safe option in possession. Defensively he was poor for the second goal and found it tough in the physical duels.

Tyler Fletcher – 6 – The metronome in midfield, he kept it ticking over for United as they dominated possession.

Jack Fletcher – 7.5 – He came closest to scoring for United, he could have had two with a bit more luck. His first-half effort was cleared off the line after great footwork in the area. He was denied a long range wonder goal by a top save late on. Technically, he looked the best player on the pitch and physically looked up to the task as well, winning eight of his nine duels.

Shea Lacey – 5.5 – Never really got going. Had to drop deep to get a lot of his touches on the ball and wasn’t able to get the better of his marker in 1v1 duels consistently. Still showed ability to open up the space at times but then let himself down with poor deliveries into the box and shot selection.

Jayce Fitzgerald – 7 – Another who looked up for the battle physically, his industrious runs through the centre of the park were the making of much of United’s good play. He did well to shrug off challenges and dribble into space before feeding the wingers.

James Scanlon – 5 – Was weak defensively for Lincoln’s second goal and made the wrong decision in the final third in the important moments.

Chido Obi – 5 – Showed good hold up play and drew a couple of fouls with quick footwork but just didn’t link up with his teammates enough to get on the ball.

Substitutes

Gabriele Biancheri – 6 – Similar to Obi, he showed good strength in his hold up play and did well to lay the ball off quickly but often had to drop deep to less dangerous areas to receive the ball.

Finley McAllister – 6 – Came in and played out of position at right-back and didn’t look out of place.

Amir Ibragimov – 6 – Offered dynamism and pace in the final third with driving runs that troubled the Lincoln defenders which United missed throughout the match.

Victor Musa – N/A – Wasn’t on long enough to make much of an impact but did have one tame effort on goal.

Youngsters put in a valiant effort despite United U21s crashing to cup defeat against experienced opponents

Manchester United U21s began their EFL Trophy campaign with an away trip to Lincoln City.

Sitting in 4th place in League One with only one loss in their opening 10 matches, Lincoln were sure to be a tough challenge for United’s youngsters.

Travis Binnion’s side went into the match in fine form, currently topping the Premier League 2 table with a perfect record after five matches including a 4-1 thumping of Crystal Palace last weekend.

First half

The home side had the first chance of the match when Justin Obikwu ran in behind, but Will Murdock was quick off his line to close the angles, forcing Obikwu to lift the ball over the crossbar.

United had a few chances of their own through Shea Lacey and James Scanlon but neither could trouble the keeper with their shots blocked and sailing wide respectively.

Obikwu had the best chance of the half in the 18th minute when the ball was centred to him at close range, and he forced an excellent save out of Murdock.

Scanlon tried his luck again late on in the half when he tried to catch the keeper off guard with a snapshot from a wide angle but Zachary Jeacock was able to adjust and push the ball wide for a corner.

Second half

The hosts finally broke the deadlock after the restart. A corner fell to the head of Tom Hamer, who looped it towards the far left corner and over Murdock who couldn’t get his hands on the effort.

United came close to levelling it up shortly after but a crucial goal line clearance kept the score at 1-0.

A lovely bit of one-touch passing between Scanlon, Shea Lacey, and Jack Fletcher ended with the latter cutting onto his weaker right foot and curling the ball towards the far corner, but Lewis Montsma covered to prevent the goal-bound effort from going in.

Poor defending on United’s left wing allowed Lincoln to get their second, as a deep cross was met by Erik Ring on the volley, and the ball hit the ground and went in off the crossbar.

Lincoln substitute Reeco Hackett-Fairchild then made it 3-0 after Jacob Devaney’s sliding interception fell kindly into his path.

Deep into stoppage time, Jack Fletcher was denied a wonder goal again when his long range strike was thwarted by Jeacock at full stretch.

The young Red Devils will feel hard done by the score line having controlled possession while also producing more shots but ultimately it came down to who could finish their chances.

United still have group stage matches against Barnsley and Notts County left, but before then, they will take on Everton U21s on Friday night in Premier League 2 action.

Former United star linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford to replace Amorim, he won the double last season – report

Manchester United have won a meagre nine Premier League games out of 33 since Ruben Amorim took charge.

And that is clearly not good enough, and many fans are asking INEOS to act now to save this season from becoming a write-off.

And while they continue to publicly back the Portuguese tactician, they are also keeping tabs on potential alternatives in case they are forced to pull the plug.

Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner are among the top targets, while the names of former United coaches Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick are also doing the rounds.

Manager hunt

Another manager with past links to the Red Devils has now emerged as an unlikely candidate — Laurent Blanc.

As per Sports Boom, the former centre-back is eyeing a return to management in Europe after a hugely successful spell with Al-Ittihad.

With them, the Frenchman won the double last season, but was brutally sacked after losing one match from his opening four games this campaign.

He is a proven winner, winning three Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and one with Bordeaux.

“Laurent Blanc wants an immediate return to management and has emerged as an unlikely contender on the Manchester United shortlist, SportsBoom can reveal.

“The former Red Devils’ legend and World Cup winner was sacked by Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad just four games into the new season despite winning the double last term.

Unlikely candidate

“And our sources have been told Blanc wants to waste little time in returning to top European management after his shock sacking.”

Interestingly, the Premier League winner under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson had come close twice to taking over the reins at Old Trafford.

The Glazers opted to keep Ryan Giggs as interim boss once David Moyes was sacked, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in as Jose Mourinho’s successor.

Whether Laurent Blanc will be approached remains to be seen, but he is not a bad shout as an interim option given his past ties with the club and his strong managerial record.

Now the ball is in INEOS’ court. One thing is certain: Amorim’s record does not warrant a longer rope.

United bosses fear Amorim will do the unthinkable to avoid embarrassing situation – report

Manchester United’s hierarchy continue to back Ruben Amorim despite the club’s disastrous start to the new season.

United recorded their lowest ever finish of 15th last term and ended the campaign trophyless. Yet, Amorim was allowed to remain at the helm.

After a pre-season under the Portuguese and four major signings costing nearly £220m, the Red Devils find themselves only one place better off after six games in the Premier League.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company still believe, at least publicly, that Amorim can turn United’s season around, but the 40-year-old apparently doesn’t share the same level of optimism.

Ruben Amorim could resign before he is sacked

According to iPaper, United insiders fear Amorim may resign rather than be sacked.

It is understood Ratcliffe is “desperate” to give his first managerial appointment at Old Trafford a full season to prove himself. However, Amorim could jump before his pushed.

The report states: “One insider insisted Amorim will soon have to consider how to preserve his own long-term reputation and added he could ‘walk away’ before his Premier League record becomes any more embarrassing and potentially career-defining.”

The ex-Sporting CP boss lost 14 times in 167 league games in Portugal. He has already lost 17 games out of 33 in the Premier League.

Interim hire likely to fill Amorim’s void

If Amorim does leave, Ineos could bring in an interim manager until the end of the season.

It is understood Michael Carrick is one potential option. He left Middlesbrough at the end of last term.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Carrick, who was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho’s assistant at United, would be “tempted by a return” to his former club.

United would reportedly prefer Amorim’s successor to have experience of English football.
