Former United star linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford to replace Amorim, he won the double last season – report

Manchester United have won a meagre nine Premier League games out of 33 since Ruben Amorim took charge.

And that is clearly not good enough, and many fans are asking INEOS to act now to save this season from becoming a write-off.

And while they continue to publicly back the Portuguese tactician, they are also keeping tabs on potential alternatives in case they are forced to pull the plug.

Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner are among the top targets, while the names of former United coaches Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick are also doing the rounds.

Manager hunt

Another manager with past links to the Red Devils has now emerged as an unlikely candidate — Laurent Blanc.

As per Sports Boom, the former centre-back is eyeing a return to management in Europe after a hugely successful spell with Al-Ittihad.

With them, the Frenchman won the double last season, but was brutally sacked after losing one match from his opening four games this campaign.

He is a proven winner, winning three Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and one with Bordeaux.

“Laurent Blanc wants an immediate return to management and has emerged as an unlikely contender on the Manchester United shortlist, SportsBoom can reveal.

“The former Red Devils’ legend and World Cup winner was sacked by Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad just four games into the new season despite winning the double last term.

Unlikely candidate

“And our sources have been told Blanc wants to waste little time in returning to top European management after his shock sacking.”

Interestingly, the Premier League winner under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson had come close twice to taking over the reins at Old Trafford.

The Glazers opted to keep Ryan Giggs as interim boss once David Moyes was sacked, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in as Jose Mourinho’s successor.

Whether Laurent Blanc will be approached remains to be seen, but he is not a bad shout as an interim option given his past ties with the club and his strong managerial record.

Now the ball is in INEOS’ court. One thing is certain: Amorim’s record does not warrant a longer rope.
