What Man United are doing after City were found guilty of breaching PL regulations – The Athletic

Manchester City have been found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations.

The sanctions have not yet been decided, and City are expected to appeal; nevertheless, the development has sent shockwaves around the Premier League.

City were charged following an investigation into alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018. This period effectively saw the Sky Blues transform from a mid-table club into one of Europe’s strongest sides, as they spent millions to attract top players and managers. In their desperation, they allegedly flouted many rules.

This development has already affected their rivals, including Manchester United.

Manchester United’s response to bombshell City verdict

According to The Athletic, Manchester United have “conducted internal assessments of the extent of the economic losses” the club has incurred which could be attributed to Manchester City’s breaches of Premier League financial regulations.

It is understood United are among the clubs across the Premier League who have, for a while now, been exploring “the ramifications of City’s alleged misconduct on their own finances and chances of success.”

United’s assessment is reportedly mainly focused on years in which they were most directly impacted. 

How Manchester City impacted Manchester United’s league outcomes

The Red Devils missed out on a league title to City in dramatic fashion in the 2011-12 season under Sir Alex Ferguson.

In the 2017-18 campaign, Jose Mourinho-led United finished second behind Pep Guardiola’s City.

The Portuguese has previously suggested that he believes there is a possibility of being awarded a Premier League medal for his work at Old Trafford during that term.

“I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points and maybe we win that league and then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal,” he said (via The Sun).

A season before Mourinho arrived, United finished fifth, one place outside the Champions League places. City took the fourth spot and a ticket to Europe’s premier competition due to superior goal difference.
