Bryan Mbeumo: Man United star in running for prestigious PL award

Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has endured a mixed start to the new campaign, but has now been nominated for a prestigious award. The Cameroonian forward enjoyed an impressive debut campaign after arriving at Old Trafford last summer.

Mbeumo finished with 12 goals and three assists for the Red Devils, helping them secure third place in the Premier League table. Brought in to add more bite to the English giants’ misfiring attack, the 27-year-old lived up to expectations, flourishing in the right-forward role as well as through the middle.

Mbeumo’s eagerness to run and blistering pace made him a huge problem for the opposition and an asset for United. Indeed, he was the club’s fastest player last season and also among the Premier League’s top ten speedsters.

The Red Devils invested over £150 million in the middle of the park this summer, and the Cameroonian was expected to hit a higher gear with a revamped midfield pulling the strings. Unfortunately, things have not gone according to plan so far.

Mbeumo’s mixed campaign

Mbeumo has started six of United’s seven games across competitions this season, featuring in the right-forward role. The Cameroonian has scored twice and registered one assist from 546 minutes of action.

Mbeumo has once again been among the fastest players in the English top flight this season. However, he has also been guilty of missing four big chances, the most among his team-mates.

The Cameroonian famously missed a glorious opportunity to equalise in the dying minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford earlier this month. His poor finishing has also hurt his team, who are now 12th in the Premier League table after five games.

However, Mbeumo did score a superb goal in the 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium at the beginning of September. That strike has now earned him a nomination for a prestigious award.

The Premier League recently revealed the candidates shortlisted for the Goal of the Month award for September, and Mbeumo has made the cut. Taking the ball on the right wing away at Everton, the Cameroonian embarked on a mazy run.

He danced through a crowd of Everton players before unleashing a calculated left-footed curler that beat Jordan Pickford and nestled into the back of the net in the 46th minute. It gave United the lead in the game, but Tyrique George equalised in the 83rd minute.

However, Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to send his team ahead in the 88th minute. Just when it looked as though the Red Devils had secured a vital win, Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stunner in the sixth minute of injury time to earn Everton a point.

That strike, meanwhile, is also among the goals nominated for this month’s award.

Final Thoughts

Mbeumo had a decent outing with his national team during the international break, scoring one goal. Fans will hope that the Cameroonian can carry that form to Old Trafford and fire United up the table once club football resumes next month.
