Manchester United’s hierarchy continue to back Ruben Amorim despite the club’s disastrous start to the new season.
United recorded their lowest ever finish of 15th last term and ended the campaign trophyless. Yet, Amorim was allowed to remain at the helm.
After a pre-season under the Portuguese and four major signings costing nearly £220m, the Red Devils find themselves only one place better off after six games in the Premier League.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company still believe, at least publicly, that Amorim can turn United’s season around, but the 40-year-old apparently doesn’t share the same level of optimism.
Ruben Amorim could resign before he is sacked
According to iPaper, United insiders fear Amorim may resign rather than be sacked.
It is understood Ratcliffe is “desperate” to give his first managerial appointment at Old Trafford a full season to prove himself. However, Amorim could jump before his pushed.
The report states: “One insider insisted Amorim will soon have to consider how to preserve his own long-term reputation and added he could ‘walk away’ before his Premier League record becomes any more embarrassing and potentially career-defining.”
The ex-Sporting CP boss lost 14 times in 167 league games in Portugal. He has already lost 17 games out of 33 in the Premier League.
Interim hire likely to fill Amorim’s void
If Amorim does leave, Ineos could bring in an interim manager until the end of the season.
It is understood Michael Carrick is one potential option. He left Middlesbrough at the end of last term.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Carrick, who was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho’s assistant at United, would be “tempted by a return” to his former club.
United would reportedly prefer Amorim’s successor to have experience of English football.
